HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of his report to the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday, Reno County Administrator Randy Partington said that Reno County EMS met with him and some commissioners to give them an update.

"Commissioner Bogner and Commissioner Hirst attended that, I believe it was a couple weeks ago," Partington said. "Really, the main issues were, right now, Dave Johnston with EMS has been getting some grants, so the financials of what the county is paying the hospital for EMS is down this year, so we're well under budget, which is really good, but we may need to use some of that gap, the difference, in encumbering for an ambulance."

Partington made it clear that the money would come out of this year's budget, but they wouldn't get the ambulance that soon.

"If we encumber this year, we won't even get it, maybe next year, maybe the year after that, but they are needing some vehicle replacements, equipment replacements," Partington said. "The good thing is, it won't impact the budget. It won't take any more than what we already have budgeted and we still should come in under budget for that."

They are also looking to improve the EMS station in Arlington.

"They are working on the Arlington EMS station, getting the right land and quotes for a building," Partington said. "I think it's a little over $300,000 is what they have as a quote to put up a new station in Arlington."

Both Hirst and Bogner were impressed with the depth and detail of the data provided to them so that they could see exactly where and when the county's money is being spent.

Reno County EMS looking to buy ambulance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ken Hunnell saw a need for another auto body shop in Hutchinson. On Monday, Nov. 6, Hunnell officially opened Hutch Auto Body at 16 Ave. A.

"We've heard that a lot of the shops are booked out for several months, first and foremost and then respectfully just felt like maybe some of the shops didn't have the most current technology and equipment," Hunnell said. "We really want this to be a customer service experience."

Hunnell has been in the body shop business since 2001 and ran several shops in Wichita. He started off working at Auto Craft where he worked as a parts person. Auto Craft has since sold. He moved up through the chain of command by writing estimates and then eventually managing the shop.&nbsp;

Soon after, Hunnell took over an existing body shop in Oklahoma and has now owned Enid Auto Body for four years. He said he found the building for Hutch Auto Body almost a year ago.&nbsp;

"It just fit," Hunnell said. "Like I just kind of understood the business. I personally am not a body technician or a paint technician. I've never done that. I just administratively understood the business and now it worked and I've really tried to implement new strategies and processes to be able to repair the cars efficiently as possible."

Hunnell said Hutch Auto Body prides themselves on using original equipment parts at no additional expense to the customer or the insurance company. He also said his business prides themselves on good communication. Customers can expect an update on the process of their car every two days.&nbsp;

"We don't sacrifice quality but we want our customers to get back into their cars as quickly as possible," Hunnell said. "Something bad happened for them to come see us. We want to try to make that a positive experience if at all possible."

Hutch Auto Body has six employees and are hoping to grow to 18. Hunnell said the Hutchinson Career and Technical Academy in town is a great asset to have in order to gain access to skilled technicians. 

He said the shop has the capabilities to work with entry level technicians. When looking for a job, he said the goal is for Hutch Auto Body to be the employer of choice in the Hutch Market.&nbsp;

"Personally we are just always looking for good quality people," Hunnell said. "We have lots of different roles and most technical industries are starved for good people."&nbsp;

Reminder: Planning Commission solar hearing Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Art &amp; Awards Ceremony recognizes the personal and professional achievements of Kansans with disabilities and celebrates exceptional professionals from across the region who are committed to providing the best possible outcomes for the persons they serve. Each year, they honor recipients with artwork created by the persons served by Interhab members. The art is used to honor the award recipients each year.

Over the summer, TECH submitted “June Boat,” a print that was painted by TECH Artist, Doug Hollingsworth and his piece was selected as one of the Art Honorees.

Doug was invited to attend the PowerUp! Conference in Wichita last month and was recognized for his beautiful piece of art. He also had the opportunity to meet the recipient of his art.

Doug has been painting with the TECH Art Program since 2017. His joy is contagious, and he has such a kind heart. Doug has true artistic talent, and he is always eager to learn and grow.

TECH Artist's piece used at Interhab event

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Pippin Williamson with Sandhills Brewing is glad to see that the question passed eliminating the food sales requirement for establishments in Reno County that sell liquor by the drink. He notes that he would have been for the concept, and was, even before Sandhills had problems getting their liquor license renewal a year ago.

"Three to four years ago, we tried to change this law before we ever ran into the problem," Williamson said.&nbsp;

Williamson also notes that it opens up possibilities for other businesses to sell wine or beer that may not have been able to before because of an inability to generate enough food sales.

"From the craft shops to our theatres, our Fox Theatre, to our movie theater, to, if they wanted to, even the Flag Theatre, and any other business," Williamson said. "One of our craft shops that's in town has a liquor license and they're very, very happy for the results."

That doesn't mean that places that now sell food will stop, though.

"We opened the brewery to make beer and serve it in a low-key casual environment," Williamson said. "That's what we want to do. Prior to this law being changed, we have been required to operate as a pseudo restaurant. Now, we don't have to. Now, we're still going to do food, because food is good for business. Food is not going to go away at the brewery or any other business."

The results are preliminary and are still subject to the canvass later this month.&nbsp;Unofficially, the count was 5407 Yes to 1873 No&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sandhills Brewing owner glad for Tuesday result

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Fine Arts Department's Holiday Hoopla concert is on Nov. 16 at Stringer Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. It will feature a symphonic band and instrumental jazz performance.

Music Instructor and Jazz Program Coordinator Greg Weis said a combo group and band will play for the jazz portion of the concert. The combo group is a rhythmic section with a few horn players.&nbsp; A vocalist will join the combo and then the big band will play a jazz set with a few Christmas tunes. One of those tunes is an arrangement of Donnie Hathaway's This Christmas that Weis arranged for the band.&nbsp;

"It's going to be a world premiere of that arrangement and then we are going to play kind of a jazz band of an arrangement of the Nutcracker Suite," Weis said.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students. Hutch CC students and employees get in free with their ID.&nbsp;

"If you bring in canned food, the tickets end up being half price," Weis said.&nbsp;

HARVEY COUNTY—A Kansas woman is going to prison after admitting to child sex crimes.

On Monday District Judge Jason Lane sentenced 32-year-old Gabriaellea Akin of Hesston to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years, according to the Harvey County Attorney's office.

In June, Akin pleaded guilty to Aggravated Criminal Sodomy and Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a child, The victim of the case was a child under 14-years-old.

Along with the prison sentence, Judge Lane ordered Akin to serve lifetime parole and lifetime registration as a sexual offender. Akin is also ordered to register as a sex offender pursuant to the Kansas Offender Registration Act.

Lifetime parole requires the Kansas Department of Corrections to supervise Akin the rest of her life. Akin is subject to conditions of release set by the Kansas Department of Corrections. If she violates those conditions, she could be sent back to prison.

Life in prison: Hesston woman admits to sex crimes involving a child

RENO COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident at US 50 and Mohawk Road in Reno County Tuesday morning.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol's report, a 1995 Frieght truck tractor was northbound on Mohawk crossing US 50 when a 1990 Oldsmobile struck the truck tractor in the trailer. Then a 2005 Ford F150 struck the tractor in the trailer, as well.&nbsp;

The tractor driver, 69-year-old Dean William Melton of Langdon was not hurt. The driver of the Olds, 27-year-old Michael Lee Gould, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. The driver of the F150, 20-year-old Natalie Lynette Galliart, was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

All drivers were buckled up, according to the KHP report.

Two injured in Tuesday morning wreck

RENO COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Reno County.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1996 Geo Metro driven by Barbara Sue&nbsp;Wiegand, 67, South Hutchinson&nbsp;was making a left turn from Eastbound Kansas 96 onto Arlington Road. The driver failed to yield.

A westbound 2016 Ford F350 driven by Brayan Antonio Jimenez Matute, 21, Parkville, Maryland,&nbsp; the F350 struck the car in the passenger side door.

Weigand was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jimenez Matute and two passengers from Mexico were not injured. Weigand was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

South Hutch woman dies after 2-vehicle crash 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gregg DeGarmo with the engineering department for the city of Hutchinson told the Hutchinson City Council the work on 30th should be done soon as it will be warm enough to finish the paving on Tuesday.

"Most of the traffic can go on the outside lanes," DeGarmo said. "I know it's confusing for a lot of people, but stay on the outside lanes. If you need to make a left turn at an intersection, the cones should allow you to come through and make that left turn on the signals. We are going to leave the traffic control up for the striping crews to come in, so they can get the majority of their work done in an efficient and safe manner. We'll keep traffic on those outside lanes, except for making left turns."

As long as it stays warm enough to stripe, things should move along swiftly.

"They are going to get in town this week," DeGarmo said. "I expect them to be in town, if not tomorrow the next day, so, we should be wrapping that up pretty quick and that way it will also be open for the Toy Run, that's on the 19th."

Striping works best during dry weather above 50 degrees.

Work on 30th should wrap up soon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is planning a ceremony for the Friday before Veterans Day to light an&nbsp;eternal flame at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial near the Post Office at First and Walnut. The event is Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.

"We will be lighting an eternal flame," said Justin Combs with the Parks Department. "Something that was taken out, I believe in the 1980s. I don't know the last time it was there, but it's been a while that we had an eternal flame there. That's right in front of the Sailors and Soldiers monument there in the middle of First Street on the south side of Walnut. I would also like to thank Kansas Gas. They contributed $2500 on a grant towards that."

Private money has also come in to help pay for the gas.

"For the next several years, the actual gas we use is already paid for," Combs said. "My staff put the lantern in and ran the gas line. It's been a great partnership between the City and Kansas Gas."

Combs also thanked Vice Mayor Greg Fast for his hard work on the project.

Eternal flame ceremony Friday

RENO COUNTY — According to a social media post from the Reno County Sheriff's Office, on Monday, deputies responded to three separate fog related accidents. 

The first occurred at 7:15 a.m. at K96 and Arlington Rd. and involved two vehicles with no injuries. 

The second occurred at 8:44 a.m. at K96 and Haven Rd. Three vehicles were involved including a Semi with entrapment. Four individuals were injured and transported. 

The third accident occurred at 9:17 a.m. just east of K96 and Haven Rd. That accident involved two vehicles with no injuries. 

 Please remember to drive with your lights on and allow more time for your commute.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno County Sheriff's Office deals with fog

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Today is election day. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.&nbsp;

There are city and school board elections on the ballot, along with three ballot questions in Reno County.

The one county wide question is the question on whether or not to keep the 30% food requirement for liquor by the drink. This question was prompted by the struggles Sandhills Brewing had the last time they tried to renew their liquor license.

There is also a local question in the city of Pretty Prairie on whether or not to keep a breed specific ordinance for dogs.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The state of Kansas first Apply Free Days are Nov. 7-9, 2023, for Kansas residents. 

During these three days, any Kansas resident, regardless of age or income can apply for free at any of Kansas 7 public universities, 19 community colleges, 6 Technical colleges, and the 21 private member institutions of the Kansas Independent College Association. 

Eligible programs include general applications, certificate programs, associate degree programs and bachelor degree programs.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Andrew Gaylor, 7th&nbsp;and 8th grade Physical Education and Strength and Conditioning instructor at Reno Valley Middle School, USD 309, Nickerson- South Hutchinson, was recently awarded a $500 Classroom Grant by the Kansas Association of American Educators (KANAAE), a non-union professional educators’ association serving Kansas educators.&nbsp; Mr. Gaylor will be using the funds to purchase three barbells that will be used in his strength and conditioning classes.

“KANAAE is thrilled to be able to support educators so they can purchase materials that help provide a variety of educational experiences for their students,” said Garry Sigle, KANAAE executive director. &nbsp;“As a professional association we are committed to helping educators, through our scholarship and grant program, purchase applicable materials and supplies.&nbsp; We know it’s the students who ultimately benefit.”

Reno Valley teacher gets classroom grant

Central Christian College of Kansas

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS), Central Christian College of Kansas (CCCK), and National Fitness Campaign today announced a partnership to bring an outdoor Fitness Court® Studio to Central Christian College of Kansas. The Fitness Court Studio, located at 1301 South Main Street, will open on Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The BCBSKS Fitness Court Studio at Central Christian College will be the first to launch in the state of Kansas.

This Fitness Court Studio was developed by BCBSKS, Central Christian College, and National Fitness Campaign to expand free access to high quality workouts and create equitable access to exercise for communities and schools around the state. The Fitness Court® Studio is twice the size of the Fitness Court®, providing over 2,000 square feet of healthy infrastructure. With the Fitness Court Studio, classes such as yoga, pilates, zumba or stretching can take place while the Fitness Court is utilized for simultaneous group and individual workouts.

Created with people aged 14 and over and with all abilities in mind, the workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Users also may download the free Fitness Court App which acts as a coach-in-your-pocket and enhances the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience.

“We need more innovative solutions to address the physical activity needs of all Kansans. Solutions that will level the playing field and allow everyone a safe place to enjoy the outdoors and improve their health,” said Virginia Barnes, director of Blue Health Initiatives at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. “We believe that all people deserve this opportunity, and we are proud to partner with Central Christian College of Kansas and National Fitness Campaign to show our commitment to improving the health of all Kansans.”

State-of-the-Art Outdoor Fitness Court® Studio Coming to McPherson, KS

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel is encouraged thus far by the collaboration between Reno County and the cities of Hutchinson and South Hutchinson regarding getting infrastructure in place for a future industrial park off of K-96 south of South Hutchinson.

"Infrastructure is probably the most expensive piece of this," Teufel said. "It's the most vital, because no industry is going to come without a sure source of water and wastewater treatment for the future. Both cities have come to an agreement that is the best path forward, that Hutchinson deliver the water and sewer, because they have the greatest volume of both of those services and treatment plants to accommodate that."

The intent is to annex the new industrial park into Hutchinson.

"The elected officials of Hutchinson, in order to do that in a responsible manner feel like the most practical means to assure taxpayers of Hutchinson that this is the right thing is that the site get annexed into the city of Hutchinson in an island annexation," Teufel said.

By statute, an island annexation must have 2/3 approval of the Board of County Commissioners.

"There are some things that need to happen with the surveying of the site and some technicalities," Teufel said. "We're putting it on as fast a track as we possibly can."

The hope is that the decisions can come before the various governing bodies by the first of the year.
