HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Heartland Miniature Horse Club will present the Heartland AMHA Classic miniature horse show at the Expo II Center on the Kansas State Fairgrounds on June 17 and June 18. &nbsp;

&nbsp;"This year we're going to do it a little bit differently, we're also going to include the big horses, so there will be miniature horses and big horse," Heather Franklin, Heartland Classic show manager, said. "They will all show in halter classes, which is based on confirmation and how closely they fit the standard of perfection according to the different breed specifications."&nbsp;

Show events will be spread throughout that weekend.

All of the horses will do trail and obstacle classes. The big horses will be rode through the courses, while the miniatures will be guided or driven via cart.&nbsp;

 Miniature events will include hunter and jumper classes in hand. Miniatures will also have several driving classes.&nbsp;

The larger horses will have both English and Western riding classes.&nbsp;

Franklin said they are allowing registration for the Heartland Classic up to both show days.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;"We would like to encourage anyone who wants to come watch, there is no admission fee," Franklin said. "Anybody who wants to come to come show their horse, bring them on, we'll take them, like I said, right up to shortly before that class enters the ring."&nbsp;

All fees are included in the show bill which can be accessed on the <a href="http://www.heartlandmhc.com/heartland_miniature_horse_club_007.htm">Heartland Classic website</a>.&nbsp;

&nbsp;According to Franklin, the Heartland Miniature Horse Club has been active since the 70s. She has been with the club for 15 years, and is the current president.&nbsp;

Ribbons will be awarded to first to sixth place.&nbsp;

"We have grand champion and reserve classes," Franklin said. "For the miniature horses in the halter, we will give a supreme champion award to what the judge considers to be the best halter horse."&nbsp;

Heartland Miniature Horse Show trotting to Hutchinson

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Samuel Houston, a resident of McPherson, Kan., and a senior-to-be at McPherson High School has been elected governor of the 2023 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas.

The announcement was made Tuesday evening during the Kansas Boys State evening retreat at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Houston, the Federalist Party candidate, and his lieutenant governor running mate, Shawn Sullivan, Leavenworth, Kan., a senior-to-be at Leavenworth High School, won the election over the Nationalist Party team of Hayden Slough, a resident of Lawrence, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Bishop Seabury Academy in Lawrence, and his lieutenant governor running mate, Chetan Thomas, Leawood, Kan., a senior-to-be at The Barstow School, Kansas City, Mo.

Kansas Boys State Governor Houston will give his inaugural address on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at K-State’s McCain Auditorium. The event will conclude with the Kansas Boys State band, chorus and talent show.

The evening’s festivities kickoff at 7:30 p.m. with a flag retirement ceremony at the World War II Memorial in front of McCain Auditorium. The event is an observance of the proper respect for the American flag and how unserviceable flags are properly disposed. The Kansas Boys State delegates from across the state will be in attendance during this ceremony, as well as the honor guard from the American Legion Pearce-Keller Post No. 17 in Manhattan, which will be presenting the ceremony. Dr.

John Lindholm, a 1949 KSU graduate who provided the dog tags as a model for the “Tags of Honor” sculpture at the Memorial, was a longtime Kansas Boys State staff member as a Legionnaire advisor before passing away in January 2020. Both events on Wednesday night are open to the public.

High school students from across the State of Kansas are participating in the 2023 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas, which started on June 4 and ends Saturday, June 10, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This is the program’s 31st consecutive session at KSU and 85th overall.

The Kansas Boys State program includes students who have just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall).

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. 

Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

McPherson teen named Boys State governor

Saturday, June 10 is a special event at the Salthawk Activity Center for Kindergarten through 3rd grade kids called United We Read.

"This year, ONEOK decided to jump in as a sponsor," said Carla Stanfield with the United Way. "We're so grateful for that, because it means we have been able to purchase about 1000 brand new age appropriate books to give away for free. This is completely open and free to the community. The books really do target that kindergarten to third grade range, but we'll have a little bit of leeway on either side of that age range to get books into hands."&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Public Library will have free library cards available and information on their summer reading program as well as a StoryWalk.

"We're going to have a lot of fun, family activities there for everyone to take advantage of," Stanfield said. "Face painting, therapy dogs, you can read to a celebrity. By that, I mean somebody local. Grab a book, go make your craft, get a snack on the way out and interact with several organizations and community supports here locally, as well."

United We Read event is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Get ready for a monster of a time as the Monster Truck Nitro Tour roars its way to the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson on June 10. &nbsp;

Hutchinson will be the motorsports entertainment epicenter on Saturday with the most competitive monster trucks in the United States. &nbsp;

"We got four really top-line monster trucks coming, plus we're going to be doing local tough trucks," Cameron Migues with the Monster Truck Nitro Tour said. "A lot of local people bringing out their own vehicles to see what they can do to hold up against our track."&nbsp;

On Saturday, June 10, there will be two monster truck shows, featuring incredible 10,000-pound, car-crushing giants. One at 1:30 p.m. and the other at 7:30 p.m. &nbsp;

Boss Gator, USA-1, Bear Foot and Lone Wolf, as well as Warrior will be some of the monster trucks spectators can expect. There will be a truck featuring many seats for ride opportunities.&nbsp;They will compete&nbsp;in racing, wheelie contests, and then rock the house with amazing freestyle action. &nbsp;

Before the shows, there will also be opportunities to meet the drivers and see the trucks up-close at the pre-event Autograph Pit Party. The first will be from noon to 1 p.m. and the second from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. &nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;A Hutchinson man was arrested for juvenile sex crimes on June 6.&nbsp;

According to the Hutchinson Police Department, the Special Operations Division and Investigations Division arrested William Eric Allen, 55. 

Indecent solicitation of a child to commit or submit to an unlawful sex act. 

Indecent solicitation of a child to enter a vehicle, building, room or secluded place.

Electronic solicitation of a child 14-15 years of age.

Allen is being held in the Reno County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond. 

This case is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this case or any crime is asked to contact Reno County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, use the P3Tips App on smartphone, or call the Hutchinson Police Department at (620) 694-2816. Any further inquiries about this case may be directed to the Reno County District Attorney’s Office.

Hutchinson man arrested for juvenile sex crimes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council discussed how to&nbsp; address aggressive panhandling in the city at its meeting on Tuesday. Councilman Greg Fast said he was contacted about the issue and wanted to bring it to the council's attention. Councilman Stuart Conklin III agreed that it is a problem.

"I can handle mine," said Conklin. "There are lots of people that would not be comfortable with this. I think that needs to be addressed. As we've seen it, it's expanding. Once it starts and it's allowed, it expands."

Mayor Jon Richardson asked Fast to do some homework on the issue.

"Look to see what kind of panhandling ordinances are out there in other communities," Richardson said. "I'm sure it's online. See if there's something that's reasonable for us to look at adopting. Maybe it's simply something in regards to not within a certain distance of a business entrance or something like that."

The problem is, because asking for money is speech and speech is protected under the First Amendment, panhandling regulations are virtually impossible to write in a constitutional manner.

"We understand the problem," said City Attorney Paul Brown. "In terms of panhandling and the anti-camping type ordinances, you'll see it, if you just Google either one. Ordinances in Kansas regarding either one of those subjects, panhandling or camping. It comes up with the constitutional objections and the threats by the ACLU."

There have been <a href="https://columbialawreview.org/content/panhandling-regulation-after-reed-v-town-of-gilbert/">several rulings as recent as 2021</a>&nbsp;founded in a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the rights of panhandlers, as long as they are in public spaces, regardless of their distance from private spaces.

City council wants to address panhandling, that has legal problems

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Generations of residents have enjoyed the food at R-B Drive In at 201 East Avenue A. Tuesday, June 6 is the restaurant's 75th anniversary. The original owners opened the restaurant in 1948.

"I'm actually the third owner," said Kirk Johnson. "My wife and I bought it in 2016 from the daughter of the original owners, Larry and Dorothy Burgess. Their daughter, Pam and her husband, Charlie Wheeler, had bought the restaurant in 1984. My wife and I bought it in 2016. We're just headed into our eighth year as the caretakers of the R-B Drive In."

R-B is in the same spot as it was 75 years ago and that makes it the oldest of its kind in Kansas.

"There were other drive-ins that opened within that same era," Johnson said. "We are the oldest continuous use operated and family operated drive in. The closest one to us would be Bobo's in Topeka, which has its own claim to fame, but they've had a couple different locations, over time."

The explosion of vehicles in the American countryside shortly after the drive-in opening really made R-B a concept in the right place at the right time.

"It started with one guy and a vision," Johnson said. "He started with quality and value and engagement or entertainment. That same footprint of a building, 750 square feet, with an open kitchen and a horseshoe counter. Social engagement in the late 40s, early 50s, in terms of dining, up to that point, you still walked into a diner or a restaurant. That really allowed people who were now, post-World War II, buying cars and being more mobile, to have that same social interaction, without getting out of their car."

Johnson knows that it's not the original grill from the beginning of the business, but he doesn't know how old the current iteration is. It is key to the process that makes their food literally something you can't get anywhere else.

"That main core of products would be the pairings of cheeseburger and the home cut fries, the homemade pork tenders and the onion rings," Johnson said. "Mr. Burgess would tell anyone that would listen that, while he was dreaming up that concept of the drive in, he was awakened by an angel at the foot of his bed, who gave him the recipe for the beer battered onion rings. That has perpetuated and continued to date. If you've had them, you know there's something a little magical about them."

Tuesday, R-B is offering 75 cent pricing on either a Green River (20 oz), CBXX cheeseburger, or regular fry, or get one of each to bundle for a throw-back meal! Limit one of each item, per person; must be personally present to order.

"We're talking to donors, board members, our staff members, parents," said Lindsey Fields with the Club. "We're also wanting to hear from the public about how they perceive youth need in our community and how they perceive youth themselves, as well as the Boys and Girls Club, because, as you know, perception is reality."

The survey is open to adults and youth, and to any community members whether they have children or not.

"When we form our new strategic plan, we want to make sure that we're just not relying on anecdata," Fields said. "We want to actually hear from the folks in our community about what they need for their kids, if they find the programs here are not meeting their needs, there are not enough of them, or if they're not high quality. We want to hear about the Club itself."

The survey should take 5 to 7 minutes to complete. All answers will be anonymous.

"Where do we need to focus?" asked Lance Patterson, CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson. "Do we need to really look at homework help, or maybe it's social emotional learning. What are those areas that the community sees as being a need and something that we also do well."

Boys & Girls Clubs conducting June survey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Stage 9’s production of Quilters by Molly Newman and Barbara Danashek will play June 8-10 at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a single weekend of performances instead of the originally planned two.

"Each little scene is introduced with the block that's part of the quilt," said Paula Rothe, who plays Sarah in the show. "It's quite different in that it's not a story that goes on and on for the hour. It's just little vignettes of different aspects in this woman's life, Sarah."

Quilters was written by two Colorado women using seven actresses to tell the stories. The stories are based on the actual experiences of pioneer women through their journals and letters as they came west to Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, etc. The show is told through the quilt blocks and quilts that brought women together then and now. This is a show for adults.

"It's more of an adult production, because of subject matter, not because of language," said director Kris Anshutz with Stage 9. "Children die in it."

Rothe and the rest of the ensemble play many parts from children to adults. The ensemble includes Piper Harding, Diana Kiuttu, Sarah Winkler, Caroline Miller, Jo Stropes and Mallory Teufel and the musical parts are challenging.

"The women in it have just done a lovely job of being able to sing in a small ensemble setting," Rothe said.

Quilters is directed by Kris Anshutz with musical direction by Bill Anshutz. Lori Henks provides the music. 

The quilt blocks and Legacy Quilt is designed by Deb Nikkel with the design brought to life by Karna Lackey of Sew In 2 Quilts. The blocks are being made by various quilters in the area.

Quilters will be June 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. with the box office opening at 6:30 and seating happening at 7:00 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In light of the continued child care shortage in Reno County, it is important to note when existing programs attempt to provide more services.

According to a social media post last week, Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson is doing just that.&nbsp;

The church said their preschool program is expanding in the fall and offering full day, year round, child care to the already existing preschool.

This means, one low cost to families for a safe, caring child care environment and a long standing, experienced preschool program  at the same time.&nbsp;

Trinity United Methodist expanding preschool offerings

HAVEN, Kan. — The Summer Lunch program for Haven USD 312 started Monday.

Lunches will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday between June 5 and July 27, except for July 4.

Lunches will be available at Haven Grade School, Yoder Charter School and the Mt. Hope Pool.

These are grab and go meals for children ages 1-18.

Haven USD 312 Summer Lunch program under way

Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre is excited to announce the lineup we have in store for the 2023-2024 live season. From comedy to rock, country music to funk and soul, and pop music to holiday favorites, the bases are covered for what is sure to be one of our most exciting seasons to date.

Season Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by phone at 877-FOX-SHOW, or in person at the Fox Box Office, 18 East 1st Avenue, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

Fox Season Tickets include admission to all eight shows in the subscription series lineup for one low price and allow patrons to keep their same seats for each show all year. Season tickets represent a 20% discount off individual show prices. 

Even with the best seats in the house, that is less than $54 per show! Season ticket prices are $364, $396, or $428 depending on seating location.

FOX Memberships for the 2023 – 2024 Season are also on sale now. 

Memberships fund the day-to-day operations of the Fox and are available in a range of price levels, each with its own set of exceptional benefits. 2023-2024 Fox Theatre Live Season Subscription Series

For over 55 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. “We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968 and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.”

East Bay Grease defined their sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the R&amp;B Albums chart and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.”

The 70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968.

50 years later, in 2018, they returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. Tower’s window-rattling grooves and raucous party spirit has been a balm for the soul throughout their half-century existence, but the release of 50 Years of Funk &amp; Soul: Live at the Fox Theater couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

The band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations, traveling the world, enjoying hit singles on their own, and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, and countless others. In the process, they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia. 2023-2024 Fox Theatre Live Season announced

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cancer Council of Reno County is accepting donations for the 2023 CCRC Purse Auction.

The Council is looking for totes, clutches, backpacks, beach bags, children’s bags, suitcases, duffels, designer bags, briefcases, golf bags, wristlets, coolers and diaper bags.

You can drop off bags at the following locations:

CCRC Office at 719 W 4th Ave. in Hutchinson 

Absolutely Flowers at 1328 N Main St. Monday through Friday  8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hutch Chamber Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

RCB Bank: 700 E 30th Ave. Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The council is also accepting monetary donations which will be used to purchase bags for the event.
