SMALLVILLE., Kan. —&nbsp;Smallville Festival continues Friday, June 16, with events dedicated to celebrating Smallville's real life Supermen and Supergirls with Community Heroes Day.&nbsp;

The<a href="https://cosmo.org/">&nbsp;Cosmosphere</a>&nbsp;will be offering <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/14ac59be-5cd9-40a2-aa2a-078e1d1641bd">a BOGO deal all day</a>.&nbsp;

First responders, including police,&nbsp;sheriffs, fire and EMS, and 911 dispatchers, will have the opportunity to buy one All-Access Mission Pass and get one free of charge on June 16.&nbsp;

Then from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., stop by the Reno County Museum for Thank a First Responder. Meet local Smallville heroes and thank them for their service to their community.&nbsp;

While at the Reno County Museum, do not forget to tour the&nbsp;From Farm to Fortress: Smallville’s Legendary Journey exhibit. The exhibit is dedicated to the history of Smallville.&nbsp;

Then wind down the evening with a free movie at Smallville's Historic Fox Theatre. At 7 p.m., they will have a free showing of the movie, DC League of Super Pets.&nbsp;

Smallville Festival will continue to be celebrated on Saturday, June 17.&nbsp;

Head Start applications being taken in Hutchinson

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp;<a href="https://techinc.org/">TECH</a> held an open house at the Adult Life Skills (ALS) building to celebrate <a href="https://techinc.org/techcelebrates50years">their 50th Anniversary</a> with the Hutchinson community on June 8.

Over 125 people made their way through the recently remodeled ALS building, taking time to look through photos and memorabilia from the past 50 years of the agency's history.

The evening also included videos of well-wishes from past and current TECH staff, TECH families, and community supporters and even a few old clips of Maurice Cummings, TECH's first President and CEO.&nbsp;

Guests were also able to shop TECH Artwork and participate in a community art project that was hosted by Kara Brown and Sam Carriker, both TECH Art Coaches. 

The highlight of the evening was a brief moment of remarks by Kevin Hess, TECH's current President/CEO, Brenda Maxey, the former President/CEO of TECH, as well as Melva Cummings and Carolyn Spexarth, the wife and daughter of the late Maurice Cummings.

Carolyn Spexarth recalled growing up and helping in the TECH Work Center. 

"The biggest lesson in all of that is that he was just giving people dignity," Spexarth said. "He'd say 'We need to work. Everyone needs to work and contribute. Everyone has a part to play in this world.' That's a lesson that our whole family learned from him." 

She also talked a lot about Maurice's dedication to advocating for people with disabilities and how passionate he was about providing opportunities to the people served by TECH. 

"He'd get really 'righteous anger' when people weren't given the dignity they needed and they were shoved aside," Spexarth said. "He thought everyone needed to be heard, seen, known, and loved and wanted to give those opportunities to our family and to the community."

She went on to recall the experience Maurice and the staff at TECH faced when proposing the very first group TECH Group home.&nbsp; 

"He would attend city wide council meetings and were met with resistance by the neighbors and he finally won them over," Spexarth said. "The neighbors were scared the group home would devalue their property and within the first few months of the TECH house being completed, they came to realize that the TECH clients were the best neighbors."

Carolyn and Melva shared numerous memories from the early days of TECH when Maurice was leading the organization. 

"I'm just really grateful that people believed in my dad's vision for this (TECH). He hired the right people at the right time for the right job. He was a visionary. He was a worker but he was a visionary more than a manager," Spexarth said. "He had a gift of encouragement." 

She closed with saying, "Thank you for your support - than you to the staff. I know this is not always an easy job but you are here to make this a better place. People are flourishing beyond just survival and it's beautiful to see."

Melva Cummings said, "he's looking down at us right now."

Brenda Maxey was the President and CEO of TECH after Maurice retired in 1998 up until last summer. 

Maxey spoke to the crowd at the 50th Anniversary Celebration about the importance of TECH's work in advocacy. 

"I remember riding with Maurice to Topeka for one of his many day trips to the Capitol, where we spent our time speaking with legislators about important issues that affected the people served by TECH and all people with disabilities," Maxey said. "That work was so important as it paved the way for opportunities that may not have otherwise been available to individuals served by TECH."&nbsp;

She recalled many stories from her days with the agency, including a fond memory of several TECH families and people served by TECH going to the Capitol in Topeka on "Push Day" to share stories about themselves or their loved one and how the decisions made by legislators have an impact on opportunities available to them. 

"One person in particular that joined us, Donald Wilson, shared his story with everyone we met. For those of you that don't know Donald, his story is remarkable. Prior to joining TECH, Donald lived in institutions and growing up, he and his family had accepted that's what his life was destined to be," Maxey said. "After TECH opened in 1973, doors were opened for individuals such as Donald. He moved into a group home with TECH and flourished." 

"One of the moments I will never forget was Donald giving testimony to a legislative committee about his life with TECH and what a positive impact it made on him."

Maxey delivered a clear message message to guests.

"It's up to all of us in this room to continue advocating and being a voice for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community so they have the same opportunities that you and I are afforded."

Kevin Hess, the current President and CEO of TECH recalled how the agency has evolved over the years. Hess&nbsp;acknowledged that the world was different 50 years ago for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 

"The opportunities beyond graduation from high school were limited and institutions were commonplace," Hess said. "At that time, independent living seemed like a far fetched concept to many." 

While there have been changes to the services and programs offered by TECH throughout the years, the dedication of the staff and support of the community has remained steady. 

"TECH has been able to pave the way for individuals with disabilities to have choices, opportunities, and a voice for their future," said Hess.

He closed with a message of gratitude towards the TECH staff that have helped bring the agency to where it is today as well as the support of the community for the work that they are doing.&nbsp;He acknowledged individuals in the room that were employees of the organization.

 "All of this wouldn't be possible without the dedication and passion of TECH team members over the past 50 years," said Hess.&nbsp;

At the end of the evening, Hess invited Kelli Bringle to lead the group in singing "Happy Birthday" to TECH.&nbsp;

TECH celebrates 50 years of real community

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Opportunity tickets are
available for one of two large quilts used by Stage 9’s production of
Quilters.


The large quilts, Lonestar and Schoolhouse&nbsp;measure
100”x100”.  Opportunities for those are $2 each or 6 for $10.

Also, 15 individual blocks used in the production will be&nbsp;framed
and quilted and finished at 32”x32”.

Tickets for those are $1 each or 6 for $5.  


Winners
will choose their block based upon order of drawing.

The opportunities are a fundraiser for Stage 9.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners approved the agreement that lets them know which sections of road are now theirs because KDOT built the new K-14 at their meeting on Tuesday.

KDOT is transferring segments of old K-14 along with new alignments of Dean Road, West 95th Avenue, Old K-14 from Dean Road to the eastern Nickerson city limit, Old K-14 from the western Nickerson city limit to the Reno and Rice County line, new box bridge Br. No. 17-78-33.82 and various drainage structures on 56th, Dean Road, 82nd, 95th, Nickerson Road and Riverton Road.

In exchange for taking these sections of road over going forward, KDOT will pay the county $400,000. That money is due to the county within 30 days of the transfer date.

"I told them that we couldn't maintain our current standard without additional equipment," said Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain. "That $400,000 was for a truck, plow, spreader, tractor and a 15 foot mower. I don't believe that's ever been done before. It took me two years of negotiating this. That's what that money is for. KDOT doesn't determine how we spend that money. That's your final decision, but that's what I negotiated that money for."

The bridge being inherited by the county is one over the Arkansas River.

"We will inherit all that," Brittain said. "Approximately around 11 miles. It would have been about 12, but there's a mile of the current road between Yaggy and Dean Road that they are going to tear up, KDOT is, so we won't inherit that. That's another burden on us. Since I've been here, the state, we've inherited around 31 miles since I've been here, of additional highway."

The new K-14 alignment is due to open Wednesday.

Also, Brittain told Hutch Post in an email Tuesday that the money is in addition to KDOT performing repair work necessary to restore the road to meet local or state condition. In the case of the turnback miles that means a mill and overlay on all the roadway the county is to receive and structures will be repaired and the Arkansas River Bridge west of Nickerson will have a new east approach installed and a polymer overlay installed on the bridge deck.

No. 17-78-33.82 and various drainage structures on 56th, Dean Road, 82nd, 95th, Nickerson Road and Riverton Road.In exchange for taking these sections of road over going forward, KDOT will pay the county $400,000. That money is due to the county within 30 days of the transfer date."I told them that we couldn't maintain our current standard without additional equipment," said Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain. "That $400,000 was for a truck, plow, spreader, tractor and a 15 foot mower. I don't believe that's ever been done before. It took me two years of negotiating this. That's what that money is for. KDOT doesn't determine how we spend that money. That's your final decision, but that's what I negotiated that money for."The bridge being inherited by the county is one over the Arkansas River."We will inherit all that," Brittain said. "Approximately around 11 miles. It would have been about 12, but there's a mile of the current road between Yaggy and Dean Road that they are going to tear up, KDOT is, so we won't inherit that. That's another burden on us. Since I've been here, the state, we've inherited around 31 miles since I've been here, of additional highway."The new K-14 alignment is due to open Wednesday.Also, Brittain told Hutch Post in an email Tuesday that the money is in addition to KDOT performing repair work necessary to restore the road to meet local or state condition. Commission approves transfer agreement

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The City of Hutchinson Public Works Department announced on June 13 that West 20th Avenue near the North Adams Street intersection will be closed for repairs.

On Saturday, June 10 at 3:12 p.m., a water line break was reported on West 20th Ave, just east of North Adams Street. The break was caused when an outside contractor made incidental contact with the eight-inch water line that was installed in 2010.

The incident left 22 customers without service. Public Works staff worked throughout the day and restored water to all customers by 8:30 p.m.

Public Works said West 20th Avenue will be closed&nbsp; until a contractor makes repairs to the street. 

The contractor is expected to be on-site on or before June 27.

According to Public Works, this was water line break number 19 in 2023.

West 20th Avenue in Hutchinson will be closed for repairs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Smallville Festival and the 10th anniversary of Hutchinson becoming Smallville, Kansas! Smallville Festival kicks-off on Third Thursday on June 15 and runs through June 17.&nbsp;

On Third Thursday, a proclamation will be read by “Clark Kent” at 6:10 p.m., and Hutchinson, Kansas, will officially change its name to Smallville, Kansas; home of Clark Kent, better known as Superman.&nbsp;

Smallville Festival is a homage to DC Comics Smallville and Clark Kent.&nbsp;

Following the proclamation, a whole day of events themed around the Man of Tomorrow&nbsp;will take place. Fun and activities will blend the rich culture of small-town living with a world-wide icon and the legacy and values he has instilled in people beyond just pages and pop culture.&nbsp;

On June 15, all Third Thursday Smallville Festival events will be free to participate in. &nbsp;

Begin the Smallville festivities before the proclamation with From Farm to Fortress: Smallville’s Legendary Journey, an exhibit at the Reno County Museum. The exhibit is dedicated to the history of Smallville and will be available to view from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., then again on Friday starting at 9 a.m. &nbsp;

From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Kids and pets can get ready for the&nbsp;Smallville Kids and Krypto Pet Costume Contest. Registration will take place at the Wiley Business District Stage on Main Street, between Sherman Ave. and 1st Ave. The costume contest itself will take place at 7:10 p.m. &nbsp;

Then can you maintain your secret identity among a horde of secret identities? Find out at 7:30 p.m. with The Most Clark Kents (and Kara’s) In One Place sponsored by Specs Eyewear. BAK in Reno County Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At the June 12, 2023, Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education meeting, board members appointed Darcie Canfield-Riggs to fill the unexpired term vacated by Greg Meredith.

Applications were accepted after Greg Meredith’s resignation in late April. In total, 11 applications were received. During the May 22 Board of Education meeting, the board narrowed the field to five. These five candidates were interviewed during the meeting held Monday night.

During her interview, Canfield-Riggs expressed that she has worked with various people from all backgrounds during her current role as Youth Services Librarian with the Hutchinson Public Library and looks forward to drawing on that experience if appointed.

Before accepting a nomination for a candidate, Board President, Kail Denison asked the board to discuss the general qualities they were looking for in a candidate. &nbsp;“I feel that a person who brings a diverse perspective to the board would be valuable,” board member Valarie Smith Gibson stated.

“I would say I’m looking for someone who’s really looking ahead to the future and has a vision for where the district can go,” board member Laura Corey added.

Addressing the candidates, Denison said, “I will say that you five, in fact, all eleven, who put in your applications for the vacant seat have not made this an easy job on us, which is absolutely fantastic because I would rather have a hard decision tonight because you are all very qualified and do care. It would be a very different situation if we had candidates that we didn’t think were this strong. So, thank you for that.”

Ron Fisher made the nomination for Canfield-Riggs, which was carried by a 5-1 vote. Cheryl Thompson was the lone vote against.

Ms. Canfield-Riggs will be sworn in at the next regular meeting on June 26th, 2023, at 6 p.m. at the USD 308 Administrative Center.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department announced the results of the Click It or Ticket campaign on June 12.&nbsp;

During the campaign, officers wrote 78 safety belt citations, one child restraint citation, three speeding citations, 53 other citations and two arrests. A total of 142 vehicle stops were made during the campaign.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Police Department conducted overtime saturation patrols to aggressively enforce Kansas occupant restraint, texting, impaired driving, and other traffic laws.&nbsp;

"We are here to enforce Kansas Traffic Laws, and ultimately to decrease unsafe driving behavior," Interim Chief Brice Burlie said. "If you were stopped, we hope you learned from the experience. If so, we have made the roads a little safer for you and those you share the road with."

"We will continue to do that because, while the 2023 Click It or Ticket campaign may be over, traffic enforcement never is."&nbsp;

The organization also works to educate the youth and communities throughout Kansas about the impact of these historic wars and the freedoms our nation enjoys because of the service of our veterans.

The trip cost is approximately $900 per veteran. There are about 500 Kansas Veterans waiting to go on this once in a lifetime trip.

Annual Kansas Honor Flight Car Show coming up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Rep. Kenny Titus, a member of the House Water Committee and former chief counsel to the Kansas Department of Agriculture, says the rule narrowing the federal government's jurisdiction on Waters of the United States is good for Kansas, because KDHE was already doing the regulating necessary in that area.

"When it comes to water quality programs, Kansas has pretty robust standards in place," Titus said. "While there are places where the feds would get involved, our department of health and environment, they have an environmental section that deals with watersheds and things like that. They are usually the ones that are involved in issuing permits and dealing with a lot of these issues. Where Kansas wasn't greatly impacted, if the federal government had expanded their territory, that would have increased where the feds would come in and meddle in projects and work on people's private land."

Titus has also served as adjunct faculty to KU law on water law issues. Fundamentally, what the WOTUS ruling does is keep the federal government out of water issues that are small enough that you couldn't find them on a map.

"You do have these federal standards," Titus said. "In a lot of cases, states are allowed to take over enforcement of those provisions, or they are allowed to have stricter standards, if they want. This is an area where Kansas, historically, has actually been pretty proactive. There are other federal programs where we have not taken on the responsibility."

To drive home the point, if the water likely won't leave a state, the court held that it is not the federal government's job to regulate it, but rather that of the state where it is located. Titus sees this as consistent with the way things have been regulated in the past.

"Regulating natural resources, for the most part, has always been primarily the job of the states," Titus said. "Each state gets to decide to what full extent. There are some larger areas, like when we divide up water for the Arkansas River out west between Kansas and Colorado. There are some natural resources that flow across state boundaries, where it makes sense to have some sort of federal guidelines in place. That's true with many of our surface waters. What we put in the river at Wichita could very well end up going out into the Gulf of Mexico. It does make sense to have some broad federal protections in place, but when it comes to those resources in the state, that's primarily been the job of the states to protect their own resources, to the degree they deem appropriate."

The legislature has addressed funding for water quality issues in recent sessions, and Titus notes that those efforts have to this point helped and that agencies have not asked for additional authority.

State Rep on water committee: WOTUS ruling lets state work

MCPHERSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://thecedars.org/" target="_blank">The Cedars</a> retirement community in McPherson recently completed the updating and remodeling of their Assisted Living Community Area. A ribbon-cutting with the McPherson Chamber of Commerce was held on June 8. &nbsp;

The Cedars is the longest continuous retirement community in the State of Kansas and has been serving their residents for over 130 years.&nbsp;

The project reflects The Cedars’ desire to capitalize on the importance of having a space for residents to be able to socialize and build relationships within&nbsp;their community.&nbsp;This rang true especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Getting people out of their apartments and enjoying the outdoors was something that The Cedars wanted to improve upon.&nbsp;

The newly refreshed area offers a technology center, a coffee bar, and restaurant-style dining with both indoor and outdoor dining area options. There are also areas to watch television, read, sit by the fireplace, or maybe do some work on one of the computers. Then there is space for families to gather no matter what the size.&nbsp;

The remodel of the Assisted Living Community Area was carefully designed with the residents in mind. The remodel committee consisted of three of the independent-living residents and four Cedars employees.&nbsp;

"What we had was a cafeteria in some ways, and a space that didn’t invite people to come down in between eating experiences or trying to create spaces for people to come down, for family members to be here," LaMonte Rothrock, CEO at The Cedars, said. "A lot of you would remember during COVID family members weren’t even allowed in. We’re trying to create spaces again to get people out of their apartments. We understand the social/emotional piece so well that we need to provide those opportunities for people to interact with each other. So that was really the motivation behind this project."&nbsp;

To accomplish that, different spaces were created within the area. &nbsp;

The comfort issue, such as it being too cold in the winter, was addressed by moving the exterior door providing an airlock to keep it more insulated. Sitting areas around the fireplace were opened to make a very comfortable area for conversation. &nbsp;

There is also a desk and computer area accessible to residents. &nbsp;

One area of the space has a nice countertop and serving area which can facilitate cooking classes or presentations. Areas for dining were adjusted and can now easily accommodate any size of gathering. &nbsp;

Essentially, the Assisted Living Community Area was opened up and made much more flexible as a living space.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"This area will be the hub of socialization, active lifestyles, and community building for many, many years to come," Daniela Rivas, McPherson Assistant City Administrator, said. "We would not be the successful city we are without this organization, this community, and the dedicated professionals who are passionate about what they do and give back. It really does take a village."

An open house for the public will take place on June 18. &nbsp;

The Cedars completes remodel 

CHENEY, Kan. — Internet Freedom will soon arrive in Cheney.

IdeaTek crews have been working this spring to expand its popular ultra-fast fiber internet to hundreds of Cheney residents and businesses. This game-changing expansion will deliver gigabit speeds at affordable prices, empowering the community with a new era of connectivity.

IdeaTek has long been dedicated to bridging the digital divide in rural areas by bringing fiber internet access to underserved rural communities. However, internet access challenges extend beyond rural areas, said Daniel Friesen, IdeaTek’s co-founder and chief innovation officer.&nbsp;

"At IdeaTek, we believe every community and every Kansan deserves access to high-speed fiber internet, and we’re excited to be making it a reality in Cheney,” Friesen said. “With fiber, we are providing a new foundation for innovation, creativity and progress in the age of the digital economy."

IdeaTek has recently built fiber infrastructure in the nearby communities of Colwich, Goddard and Halstead. The company is also currently building fiber internet to Sedgwick and Burrton.&nbsp;

Last year, IdeaTek deployed wireless internet to Cheney and the surrounding rural areas. It was developed as a temporary solution until fiber could be built. Investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth, Friesen said. Fiber internet offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, scalable capacities for decades to come, enhanced reliability, and better pricing compared to current service providers in the city.

“We build to the standards of the future, not today,” he said. "Fiber internet is the gold standard for internet connectivity, and we want to bring this technology to as many communities as possible.”

Construction will be completed in the coming weeks, bringing residents unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second. Furthermore, IdeaTek offers the convenience of no-contract agreements, giving customers more flexibility.

To celebrate fiber coming to Cheney, IdeaTek will have a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. June 15. Refreshments will be served and the IdeaTek sales team will be on hand to answer questions about service plans.

The team also will be at the Sedgwick County Fair parade in Cheney July 12, giving away candy and Cheney Cardinals T-shirts.

Based in Buhler, IdeaTek was founded in 1999 by Friesen and four high school friends. Today, the company employs over 140 Kansans and is continuing to grow. Ideatek expands fiber to Cheney; ribbon cutting June 15

As Father’s Day approaches this year, I have been reflecting on the life and legacy of my grandfather, Emil, who passed away at the age of 95 earlier this year. I spent more of my life with him than any of my other grandparents, giving me a deeper understanding of the wisdom he shared and the ways he shaped the character and personalities of my family.

Grandpa wasn’t outwardly affectionate; I am not sure I ever remember seeing him hug or show public affection to anyone. He showed love by working hard to support his family; he spent more than 40 years working six days a week on rotating shifts at the local paper mill and milking 40 to 50 head of cattle twice a day. He showed support to his grandchildren through generosity by buying 4-H and FFA project animals, getting us show supplies or making contributions to fund experiences that expanded our educations and broadened our horizons.

He didn’t give pep talks, preach life lessons or try to inspire by speech, but his ability to persevere and overcome obstacles inspires me. He began life in a home where only German was spoken. Though he and his siblings learned English at school, his mother never did. He and his brothers took responsibilities for running the farm at a young age because his father suffered injuries in World War I that prevented him from providing for the family. He left high school to serve in the Navy at the end of World War II and eventually completed his education after he returned from the service. At the age of 92, he crawled 150 yards with a broken hip after rolling his ATV, and instead of letting the injuries conquer him, he waited out his sentence of rehab at the nursing facility without complaint until he was healed enough to return home. 

Grandpa had a quiet devotion to the important things in life. He visited his wife of 60 years every single day for several years when she moved into a nursing home at the end of her life even though he remained at home to continue running the farm. He never spoke about religion but attended church every Sunday, even after my grandmother passed away, until his health prevented him and he had to listen to the service on the radio.

He showed patriotism was important, and he was proud to be a member of the American Legion for 70-plus years. The Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2011 was the trip of a lifetime for him, and he loved to share stories and pictures from the trip. At the age of 94 he participated in the Dream Flight and took a ride in a WWII biplane.

He cared about making a good impression and showing respect. Grandpa showed tremendous pride that our family dressed formally for grandma’s funeral because he thought too few people show that kind of care and effort anymore. My cousin recounted how, in the age of cell phones, he always left her very formal voicemails stating, “Hello, Jenna. This is your grandfather, Emil Mundt…”

My grandfather passed along more than the genes for bushy eyebrows and having a big sweet tooth to his children and grandchildren. His values of love, service, generosity, hard work, dedication, pride and high standards are a legacy that live on in me and my family members.

Happy Father’s Day and thank you to all the men who are modeling important values and showing the value of character in life.
