Movie Night at Fairgrounds is Saturday

HARVEY COUNTY — A resurfacing project is due to start Tuesday, July 30, on K-15 in Harvey County. 

The chip seal&nbsp; will be on K-15 from the south city limits of North Newton north to the Harvey/Marion county line. 

The work is expected to be completed by Aug. 12. 

Traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car, and motorists should be prepared to stop and expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

K-15 chip seal to start next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Join us for the 5th Annual Bridgebuilders BBQ on July 25th at 6 p.m. The event will take place in Carey Park at the Homebuilder's shelter (right across the street from Salt City Splash Aquatic Center).

Brush 71 headed west

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall believes outside eyes need to go in to look at the Secret Service after the July 13 shooting of Donald Trump.

"There was a systemic failure on the part of the Secret Service," Marshall said. There was a systemic failure, there were individual failures as well. Unfortunately, it's gonna take weeks to uncover exactly where all those failures are."

That's why as part of committee work on Wednesday, Marshall asked for additional help from the administration.&nbsp;

"What I did was call upon the president to name some type of a crisis person, a crisis intervention team to go into the Secret Service and stabilize the situation," Marshall said. "Again, that's gonna take months for Congress to go through this particular investigation and they're gonna uncover more problems than we've even began to talk about."

Marshall thinks he has an idea what the motive of the shooter may have been.

"I think that this was a young man who was troubled," Marshall said. "He was probably schizophrenic, had some type of a manic depressive disorder as well. This is a kid who was bullied in high school. This is a young man who wanted to join the rifle team, and for whatever reason was not allowed to join that team. What we've heard is they didn't think he was safe enough, so he spends the next three years learning how to shoot a rifle, and he had this opportunity for attention, and more by luck and negligence than by any horrific plan that was out there. I think his motivation is that simple."

Marshall serves on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security &amp; Governmental Affairs (HSGAC).

Canvassing dates set for elections

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;City Beverage presented the Food Bank of Reno County with a check on Wednesday.

Vice President of City Beverage, Chris Welsh, along with other representatives from City Beverage presented a check for $4,450.00.&nbsp;

"It means a lot to be able to give back to the community," Welsh said. "I'm fortunate enough to be able to work for owners Ann Bush and Matt Michener, and we all have similar big hearts that want to help the community out. All 36 of us at City Beverage take a lot of pride in the community."

The donation means a lot to the Food Bank of Reno County, as well.

"That'll help us buy more food and supply," Penny Taapken with the Food Bank of Reno County said. "The need is more and this time of year the donations are down, so this is very much appreciated."

Based in Hutchinson, City Beverage was founded in 1974 by John Stephens. In 1996, John’s daughter, Ann Bush, and husband, Bob Bush, joined the company, eventually purchasing City Beverage from John in 2003. Today, Ann and Matt Michener lead the company, which includes an impressive 52,000 square foot facility and more than 30 employees.

City Beverage presents check to Food Bank of Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City of Hutchinson Housing Program Coordinator Carissa Paxton spoke to the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday about the survey that is out for anyone in the county to take.

"What I am asking for is participation in the Reno County Housing Survey," Paxton said. "Reno County, the city of Hutchinson, the city of South Hutchinson, and the Hutchinson Housing Commission have all partnered together to conduct a housing needs assessment for our entire county. We have done countless hours of data analytics, as well as over 10 community listening sessions. And now we're at the point in the needs assessment where we get survey data. And the only way for us to collect that is for Reno County residents and those who work in Reno County to take this survey. It's very important. It's available in English and in Spanish. And you can scan the QR code on the flyer, find the links on social media, or go to <a href="http://renocountyhousing.com">renocountyhousing.com</a> and a little pop-up will appear to take the survey."

Paxton wants to see as much participation as possible.

"It asks where you live, what your perceptions are on housing in Reno County, where you think we need to be focused on as far as housing issues go and things like that," Paxton said. "It's a really important survey and I would just ask everybody to take it and share it, so your circles can take it as well."

There will be paper copies at the courthouse, at the City of Hutchinson offices and at the city offices in the county for those that don't want to fill it out online, once Paxton is able to get the information to them.

Paxton: Please fill out housing survey

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Reno County Administrator Randy Partington attended the meetings in Arlington and Pretty Prairie this week where the idea of zoning the parts of Reno County that are currently unzoned was the topic. First, county staff explained what zoning does.

"Mark Vonachen did a quick overview, high level overview of what planning and zoning is, so that all the people in attendance had a general understanding of what it meant to be zoned," Partington said.

Once they knew the implications, it wasn't a tough decision for most.

"They pretty much unanimously still did not want to be zoned," Partington said. "It was about property rights and they really wanted to have goverment stay out."

The folks in Nickerson were a lot closer to half and half, but the crowds were bigger at the meetings this week, so, since the people don't want change, it isn't Partington's intent to do anything more.

"From my standpoint, there isn't at this time," Partington said. "If one of the three commissioners that were in attendance wants to bring it up, or ask for a future agenda item, that's up to the commissioners."

The Board wanted to hear from the public before making any other moves, and it appears they have spoken.

NEWTON, Kan. — Crews spent the early morning hours on the I-135/East First Street overpass after a car collided with the rear of a stalled semi, which was  loaded with cows. 

One patient declined hospital transport after the incident and the cows appeared unharmed. 

Northbound I-135 is currently closed to traffic although there is a convenient detour with off/on ramps nearby.

Traffic slowdown in Newton early Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The July edition of Talk20 Hutch is coming up July 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hutchinson Public Library. The ten presenters each have local ties and are talking about issues relevant to the community.

"We have Dakotah Sanders, Andrew Davidson, Taryn Borders Haag, Kathie L. Moore, Michael Glenn and Gina Long, Aubrey Abbott Patterson, Joel Iwashige, Lucky Luci, Dashona Mahoney, and Randy Royse," said Kari Mailloux with Talk20 Hutch. "They're going to be talking about everything from backpacking to see the eclipse in rural Arkansas recently, to renovating historic homes in Reno County, to the story behind their paintings, creating a new newspaper in Hutchinson and starting a business, while still working full-time."

The presentations are based on a Japanese presentation form called Pecha Kucha.

"Pecha Kucha is a format that was started in Japan for architects," Mailloux said. "The premise is that you have 20 slides and only 20 seconds per slide to tell a story. It was created to keep long-winded architects to a structured format. It was adapted, kind of, for the U.S., as this concept of Talk20. Same format though, 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide to tell a story."

It's sort of like the old slide projector presentations that those in their older years may have seen in school, but with a 21st century twist.&nbsp;

"I think about Talk20 as like a photo essay," Mailloux said. "You really are picking your 20 photos first and then figuring out, okay, I have 20 seconds to say something about this photo, to tell a story over 20 of them. How am I going to do that? People take different approaches. Some write out every slide's talking points. Some talk more organically across the images. It's always interesting to see how people show up."

The first Talk20 Hutch was held on January 24, 2014 in the upstairs auditorium of the Library, and it overflowed into the hall and onto the floor, with nearly 150 people in attendance. It moved to the main floor of the Library for the second and each subsequent event, with the Library staff getting continually more creative about how to fit in more chairs. Attendance has more than once surpassed 400.

Talk20 Hutch coming up Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss believes the Federal Reserve can't wait much longer to reduce rates.

"We asked the bankers this time about interest rate cuts," Goss said. "On average, about over half recommended, advocated for two rate cuts from the Federal Reserve. And I think we probably will see at least two rate cuts in 2024, the first one coming on September the 18th."

The reason Goss thinks that will happen has to do with the indicators lately.

"It's not because they're that they defeated inflation, it's because the economy is weakening that fast," Goss said.&nbsp; "Look at the unemployment rates now to 4. That's national unemployment rate up to 4.1%. You're seeing the labor market is not nearly as bright or as solid as some of the presidential candidates are claiming, depends on which candidate we're talking about. The labor market is just not as strong as advertised."

Goss isn't sure action will be enough to stave off a recession.

"Over the last 50 years, for example, you you see a real trend at the beginning of the recession, the Fed or the economic softness, the Fed begins to reduce interest rates," Goss said "What happened is they held rates too high for too long. That's what we're seeing, the results of that.

The next Federal Open Market Committee meeting is July 30 and 31.

Goss sees two rate cuts coming

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland on Tuesday announced $1,295,450 has been awarded to 108 recipients in the latest round of Kansas Arts Commission (KAC) grant funding. The funds will support museums, arts education, music, dance, visual arts, professional and community theater, creative writing, murals, poetry and other creative projects.

Grants were awarded in 42 counties, and Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre is proud to be one of three recipients in Reno County, receiving $16,564 in General Operating Support.

“General operating support is crucial for Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre to maintain its vibrant presence in the community,” states Penny Bettles, Development Administrator at the Fox Theatre. “As a cherished cultural landmark, the theatre relies on this funding to cover essential expenses such as utilities, staffing, and maintenance. With stable financial backing, the Fox Theatre can focus on expanding its outreach, preserving its historic architecture, and fostering an inclusive space where art and culture thrive.”

“Ticket sales cover only the costs of the artists and the expenses associated with staging performances. To sustain our operations and continue providing exceptional cultural experiences, we rely heavily on the generosity of our members, sponsors, and donors, as well as grant writing and fundraising efforts. This support is vital for covering essential operational expenses.” said Bettles.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Jordan will be the speaker in the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) speaker series on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. at the Wool Market &amp; DIY School, 420 N Main St, Hutchinson. 

Jordan, President and CEO of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, will present on Child Care. His talk is sponsored by the Reno County Child Care Task Force. The event is free and open to the public with beverages and snacks provided.

Pathways to a Healthy Kansas, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield funding program in partnership with Heal Reno County, launched this speaker series addressing Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) initiatives.

This series features community leaders speaking on different topics highlighted in the CHIP and residents of Reno County are invited to join in on the conversation.

Jordan to speak Wednesday as CHIP series continues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Councilman Scott Meggers has a community meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 at the Dillon Nature Center cabin.

He plans to address 43rd Street and Orchard Park issues at the meeting, along with anything that constituents want to talk about to make the city better.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If anyone picked up a fresh locally grown bouquet this spring or summer, there's a chance it came from Salt City Blooms.

Owner Jessica Rayl who's had a love for growing flowers for awhile now, said she discovered the idea for her business on Facebook.&nbsp;

"I saw someone else doing it and I was like I think I can do that," Rayl said. "I love growing flowers. I might as well give it a shot, and then we moved to our new location (new home) and then I decided you know what, I'm going to try it."&nbsp;

Rayl sells a mix of flowers in neatly gathered bouquets every Saturday on her driveway adjacent to she and her family's home. Each bouquet is a little different each week which Rayl said people enjoy. She said whatever is in bloom gets put in the bouquets.&nbsp;

"The beginning of this season, it was snap dragons and stalk and then really early sunflowers and then as you know as flowers changed through the season because everything is grown outside, it is very seasonal, it just changes with it," Rayl said.&nbsp;

Right now, Rayl is putting lisianthus in her bouquets which is one of her favorite flowers. 

In addition to her unique mix of flowers in the bouquets, Rayl said she has received positive feedback about her flowers regarding a unique feature.&nbsp;

"So these flowers have not been sprayed and I think people appreciate that they still look nice and are not covered in chemicals," Rayl said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She said she does not spray the flowers specifically because she doesn't want the chemicals pesticides contain around her children.&nbsp;

The stand is only open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located at 3911 E. 56th Ave. Rayl's flower garden is visible to the public but is not permitted for public use.&nbsp;

Salt City Blooms will stop selling flowers seasonally by first frost which is historically Oct. 15. All bouquets are $20 each and can be purchased with cash or check. MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson Opera House Executive Director Karissa Hoffman has given her resignation to Board President Denise O’Connor-Munsey, effective August 9, 2024.
