Nadine Elizabeth Nichols, 93, of McPherson, Kansas passed away February 1, 2024 at Hospice House in Hutchinson.

She was born in Osage City, Kansas on December 31, 1930, the daughter of James Edwin and Reva Estella (Heathman) Allen.

Nadine attended Dawson Grade School, Roosevelt Junior High and Topeka High School, Topeka, Kansas. She then attended Adela Hale Business College and Hutchinson Junior College.

On June 30, 1947 Nadine was united in marriage to Robert Adelbert Nichols, Sr. at Oskaloosa, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Topeka, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of four children, Patricia, Stephen, Robert Jr., and Tim. The family moved quite a bit and in 1956 the family moved to McPherson.

Nadine was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Through the years she worked for Firestone as a general office manager and for Brunks Jewelers.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, McPherson. Nadine was a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 2715, member and past president of the American Legion Post 24 Ladies Auxiliary, a member and past president of the Soroptimist Club of McPherson, a member of McPherson Hospital Auxiliary and a member and past president of the United Methodist Women.

Nadine enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, camping, and spending time with friends and family.

She is survived by daughter Patricia (Paul) Lookingbill of Paola, Kansas; sons Stephen (Natalie) Nichols of Atlanta, Georgia, Robert (Maggie) Nichols, Jr. of Marion, Kansas, Tim (Lisa) Nichols of Inman; 10 grandchildren 24 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

Nadine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert Nichols, Sr.; sister, Erma Galvin; half-brother William Klatt; and a granddaughter Tuesday Erwin.

Private family burial will be at McPherson Cemetery.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Chapel with Dr. Dean Johnson officiating.

Robert Dean “Bob” Moore, 80, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Pine Village in Moundridge.

Bob was born on January 4, 1944, in Adams, KS, the son of Donald Ross and Joyce Arlene (Lear) Moore.&nbsp; He graduated from Arlington High School in 1962 and from Hutchinson Junior College in 1963.&nbsp; He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the &nbsp;Vietnam War from July 16, 1963 to April 17, 1967.&nbsp; While overseas, he was deployed in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan.&nbsp; Because of his military occupational specialty, he was given Top Secret security clearance.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bob was united in marriage to Lois Ann Hermesch on January 18, 1969, in Kelly, KS.&nbsp; Bob and Lois have made McPherson their home since 1970.

Bob was a former McPherson City Commissioner (two terms), a restauranteur, real estate broker, and auctioneer.&nbsp; He is most known for Sir Robert’s Restaurant &amp; Catering, which he and Lois owned and operated for many years. They also had a cafeteria in McPherson called the Downtowner.

Over the years, Bob has been very active in the community.&nbsp; He has been a trustee of McPherson Elks Lodge and director of Kansas Restaurant Association, served on the State of Kansas Commission on Travel and Tourism, and has held numerous positions for the McPherson Chamber of Commerce including being Past President and Past Chair and being involved in the Men’s Trip Committee, Housing Committee, McPherson Main Street Economic Reconstructing Committee, and was Chairman for Brush Up Mac.&nbsp; He served on the All-Schools Day Committee from 1971 to 2006 and was the General Chair in 1979.&nbsp; Bob was also a graduate of Leadership McPherson in 2004.

Other organizations Bob was involved with were the McPherson Masonic Lodge #172, Masonic Building Committee, ISIS Shrine Temple, where he was a member of the Camel Herders, Topless Travelers, and the Royal Order of Jesters. He also was past president for the McPherson Shrine Club.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was a member of Mac Area Cruisers, McPherson Zoning Board and McPherson Optimist Club. He served on the American Red Cross Board, McPherson Board of Realtors, and McPherson MLS Committee. &nbsp;He also was a member and chair person for the McPherson Landlord’s Association.&nbsp; Bob was a life member of V.F.W. Post #2715 and life member of American Legion Post #24.&nbsp;

Bob was an avid car enthusiast and had quite a number of classic collector cars over the years.&nbsp; He loved entering the vehicles in the area car shows and received many awards for his meticulously restored vehicles.&nbsp; Bob was among the first students to go through the auto restoration program at McPherson College and, through the years, employed a number of students to assist him with his auto restoration projects. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Lois; niece, Dinelle Hunsberger (Gavin); brothers-in-law &amp; sisters-in-law, Donna Baker (Roy McGinley), Mark Hermesch (Betty), Kenny Hermesch (Colette), Roger Hermesch (Janet), Sam Hermesch (Debbie), Janet Baggett (Del), and Sandy Olberding; and other numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donna Lehner.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Michael Kerschen officiating with Rosary following at 7:00 PM.&nbsp; The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, February 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

BUHLER, Kan. — After sitting out the 2023 season as a redshirt, Quinn Maher didn’t waste any time getting started in 2024 on Thursday.

Pinch-hitting the bottom of the fifth inning of the Hutchinson Community College baseball team’s season opener against the Southeast (NE) Bobcats, Maher hit the first-pitch he saw for a go-ahead three-run home run.

Trailing by as many as four runs in the opener, the Blue Dragons rallied to defeat Southeast 8-6 in head coach Brock Nehls’ Blue Dragon debut on Thursday at Buhler’s Wray Field. Maher had three more RBIs in Game 2 as the Blue Dragons completed a sweep of the Bobcats with an 11-1 run-rule victory in seven innings.

The 2-0 Blue Dragons next play the Central Christian College JV in a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field. The Blue Dragons will complete a four-game series with Southeast in a doubleheader next Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

GAME 1 RECAP – Blue Dragons 8, Southeast 6

The Blue Dragons trailed Southeast 5-1 through four innings in the 2024 season opener and the Bobcats had all the momentum.

With one out in the Dragon fifth, Colin Cymbalista walked and Cody Gunderson was hit with a pitch. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and Cymbalista scored on a Tyson Vassart sacrifice fly that cut the Bobcat lead to 5-2. Luis Pimental-Guerrero then beat out an infield single to short to score Gunderson cutting the Southeast lead to two. &nbsp;

After a Jordan Tucker single, Maher came up as a pinch hitter and drove the first pitch he saw over the left-center field fence for three-run home run in his first career at-bat which gave Hutchinson a 6-5 lead.

The Dragons sent 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run fifth inning.

After falling behind 5-1, the Blue Dragons outscored Southeast 18-2 over the remainder of the doubleheader.

Kael Babin had the only multi-hit game in the Blue Dragons’ eight hit attack. Vassart drove in two runs. The Blue Dragons took advantage of six walks and six hit batters. Gunderson, Tucker and Cooper Wesslund were each hit with pitches twice in the game.

The Blue Dragons stole eight bases in Game 1, which tied for the fourth-most in single-game Blue Dragon history. The last time the Dragons had at least eight stolen bases in a single game was against the Sterling College JV on April 22, 2015.

Caden Wanless earned the victory in his Blue Dragon debut. He pitched three innings in relief and struck out five with two hits, one run and four walks allowed. Bradley Neill pitched a spotless sixth inning and Cole Toureau struck out three in earning his first save of the season.

GAME 2 RECAP – Blue Dragons 11, Southeast 1

Maher continued to do damage against the Bobcats in Game 2. His two-run single was part of a seven-run first inning that helped the Blue Dragons take control early. The Dragons led 7-0 after one inning and 9-0 after two innings.

Cymbalista started that seven-run first with a solo home run. He later capped the first-inning explosion with a two-run single that scored Blake Bradford and Wesslund to make it 7-0.

Cymbalista was 2 for 4 in Game 2 with a run and four RBI to lead a 10-hit Blue Dragon attack.

Tucker was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles, a run scored and an RBI. Maher was 1 for 3 with three RBIs. Maher had a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Trenton Roehler tossed three shutout innings in relief with seven strikeouts to earn the pitching victory for the Dragons in his Blue Dragon debut. Roehler allowed two hits and walked two, but had a streak of five consecutive strikeouts in his performance.

Sam Ojeda started and worked the first three innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Gus McKay had a strikeout in a scoreless top of the seventh inning.

The Blue Dragons had six more stolen bases in Game 2. Babin tied a single-game career high with three stolen bases. He also had three steals against the Sterling College JV on April 25, 2022.

⚾ Maher's go-ahead homer lifts Dragons

OTTAWA, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College freshman Dakota Lake had an impressive debut with 13 strikeouts over five innings to help the No. 17-ranked Blue Dragons complete a season-opening sweep of the Ottawa University JV Braves on Thursday at the Dick Peters Sports Complex in Ottawa.

The Blue Dragons won their fifth-straight season opener as Alexis Mastin drove in three runs in a 6-1 victory in Game 1. That was followed by Lake’s memorable debut as Hutchinson completed the sweep with a run-rule 8-0 victory over the Braves in six innings.

The 2-0 Blue Dragons travel to Neosho County and NEO next Friday and Saturday in Chanute and Miami, Oklahoma.

GAME 2 RECAP – Hutchinson 8, Ottawa JV 0

Lake’s 13-strikeout performance was the third-most strikeouts by a Blue Dragon pitcher in individual single-game history.

Over her five innings, Lake gave up only two hits with a hit batsman in her 13-strikeout performance. She had a minimum of two strikeouts in each of her fifth innings. Lake retired the final 12 batters she faced; the last six batters were all retired by strikeout. In each of her first two innings, Ottawa had runners in scoring position, but Lake ended the first with a called strikeout. After the Braves had runners a first and second to start the second inning, Lake struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

Jaala Nowlan allowed a bunt single and had a strikeout in a scoreless sixth inning.

Designated player Annie Kealey tied a Blue Dragon single-game record with three doubles, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Kealey is the 11th Blue Dragon to have three doubles in one game, a feat last accomplished by Carley Sternecker against Hesston College on March 9, 2021.

With hits in both games on Thursday, third baseman Olivia Sandoval extended her consecutive-game hitting streak to 18 games dating back to last year. She moved past Ella Dougherty for the fourth-longest hit streak in program history. Sandoval was 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI in Game 2.

First baseman Brooke Backhaus was 3 for 4 in the second game with a double and two RBIs.

Leadoff hitter Bailey Backhaus and right fielder Jaeleigh Darnell both had two hits. Darnell had two doubles and drove in two runs.

GAME 1 RECAP – Hutchinson 6, Ottawa JV 1

The Blue Dragons opened the season with a three-run first inning. Mastin ripped a two-run single to score Bailey Backhaus and Sandoval. Brooke Backhaus had a sacrifice fly to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead.

Hutchinson scored all six runs in the first three innings of Game 1.

Bailey Backhaus, Brooke Backhaus and Tamara Lozoya had two hits each to lead the Blue Dragons’ 10-hit attack.

Mastin drove in three runs with her two-run single in the first and sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Korri Lies pitched the first four innings to earn her first victory of the season. Lies struck out five and walked one with one hit allowed in four shutout innings.

Delaney Blakesley tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Morgan Tomlinson struck out two in the seventh inning.

That was followed by Lake’s memorable debut as Hutchinson completed the sweep with a run-rule 8-0 victory over the Braves in six innings.The 2-0 Blue Dragons travel to Neosho County and NEO next Friday and Saturday in Chanute and Miami, Oklahoma.GAME 2 RECAP – Hutchinson 8, Ottawa JV 0Lake’s 13-strikeout performance was the third-most strikeouts by a Blue Dragon pitcher in individual single-game history.Over her five innings, Lake gave up only two hits with a hit batsman in her 13-strikeout performance. She had a minimum of two strikeouts in each of her fifth innings. Lake retired the final 12 batters she faced; the last six batters were all retired by strikeout. 🥎 Lake fans 13 in season opener

Elvin Eugene McIntosh (Mac) died peacefully in his sleep Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at his home in Newton Presbyterian Manor. &nbsp;He was 89 years old and was ready to join his wife, Karen, in Heaven. &nbsp;Mac was born in Newton on July 23, 1934 to Marvel (Flint) and Robert McIntosh. &nbsp;He was the youngest of three sons and had a younger sister. &nbsp;Life was hard growing up in Peabody but Mac told stories of playing football, hunting, trapping and helping his dad on the farm. &nbsp;When he was 16, he chose to live with friends so he could finish high school instead of dropping out to get a job. &nbsp;He graduated from Burns High School in 1952. &nbsp;

After graduation, Mac joined the army and served in the Korean War. &nbsp; He was a corporal in the infantry and told stories about running races during training and learning to ski so he could serve his country. &nbsp; His one dream was to take a Kansas Honor Flight to visit the Korean War memorial in Washington D.C. but health issues made that difficult. &nbsp;

After the war, Mac returned to Peabody and began working for the railroad. &nbsp;While living there he would visit the local ice cream shop and a part-time clerk named Karen caught his attention. &nbsp;After several trips for ice cream, Mac finally asked her on a date. &nbsp;They were married 6 months later on Aug. 8, 1957. &nbsp;Shortly after, they moved to Hutchinson where Mac took a job as a fork-lift operator at Dillon’s Warehouse where he worked for nearly 40 years. He made life-long friends with many co-workers. &nbsp;During this time Mac and Karen welcomed a son, David Eugene and a daughter, Sheri Ann. &nbsp;

Mac loved to go fishing and camping with his family. &nbsp;He also enjoyed playing poker, dominoes, and doing puzzles. &nbsp;As his children grew up, Mac would support them in all their activities, but when son David &nbsp;joined The Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corp, Mac took his summer vacation time and volunteered to drive the supply truck following the Corp to performances throughout the U.S. &nbsp;His other love was Jr. College basketball. &nbsp;During a week every March, Mac would not miss a game during the NJCAA tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. &nbsp;For many years during this week, Mac would connect with a team from another state and invite them to visit Mrs. Mac’s class to tell about their game, state, and interests of the team. &nbsp; A highlight of these geography lessons was comparing shoe sizes and height between players and elementary students. &nbsp;Several times, Mr. and Mrs. Mac would take her students on a field trip to watch their adopted team play at the tournament. &nbsp;

Mac shared his love of sports with his grandchildren. After retirement, the Macs rarely missed a football, basketball or volleyball game. &nbsp;He also went to many band and choir programs. &nbsp;If a grandchild needed a ride anywhere, Mac was quick to volunteer. &nbsp;

In 2013, Mac lost the love of his life, Karen. &nbsp;Six months later he lost his son David. &nbsp;The last 11 years were a time for Mac to find his new normal. &nbsp;He learned how to use a cell phone even though he hated to make calls. &nbsp;He was great with numbers and would do a Sudoku puzzle every day of the year, but he also worked very hard to practice reading and was proud when he was able to finish a book and talk to his daughter, Sheri, about what he had read. &nbsp;He stopped attending Jr. College basketball, but didn’t miss a KC Royals or KC Chiefs game and loved to talk about plays for days after. &nbsp;During this time, Mac started meeting former high school classmates for coffee each week while also developing wonderful connections with the people living at the Broadway Apartments and the Newton Presbyterian Manor.

Mac was a hardworking man. In order to stay busy after his wife’s death, he got a job at Conklin Cars in Newton, shuttling cars from one location to another. &nbsp;Mac was a “car guy” and kept track of every car he drove and where he took it. &nbsp;Often when Sheri would call him after work, he would have to call her back because he was “on the road” somewhere between Newton and a surrounding town. &nbsp; He enjoyed this job for nearly five years. &nbsp;

Mac was like most men his age: cared for his family, worked hard to support them and gave them everything they needed and most of what they wanted. &nbsp;He believed in laughing and loving and having faith in God. &nbsp;He is finally reunited with his wife Karen, his son David, his sister Colleen Bruner, and his brothers and parents. &nbsp;He has also finally met his great grandson Ezekiel Elijah Hill. &nbsp;Mac is survived by: his daughter, Sheri and Marlin Janzen; grandson Ryan and Amanda Janzen and great granddaughters, Nora and Sage; grandson Evan Janzen and Stephy Khairallah and great granddaughter Mischa; grandson Allen McIntosh; and granddaughter Karis and Joel Hill and great grandchildren Jackson, Ellie and Zoey. &nbsp; Like many men, Mac had faults and doubted his value but his friends and family are grateful to have known him and know the world was a better place because he lived in it. &nbsp;

Burial with military honors will be a graveside service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Kansas Honor Flights in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501&nbsp;

COLBY – The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team sank 11 3-pointers to remain perfect in true road games this season with a decisive Jayhawk Conference victory over the Colby Trojans on Wednesday night.

<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/whiteney_dallas_ktg5">Dallas Whitney</a>&nbsp;hit a career-high five 3-pointers to lead the Blue Dragons to a 77-56 victory over the Trojans at the Colby Event Center.

The Blue Dragons improved to 17-3 overall and remained one game behind league leaders Barton and Cowley at 12-2. Hutchinson plays host to Independence at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Colby fell to 7-14 and 3-12 in league play. The Dragons defeated Colby for the seventh-straight game.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-0 in true road games this season.

Whitney led a 39-18 scoring advantage off the bench with 19 points, his second-highest single-game performance of the season. Whitney hit 5 of 9 3-pointers to place the Blue Dragons. Whitney also tied a career high with seven rebounds.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons held Colby to the fourth fewest points in series history. The Trojans shot 41.8 percent (23 of 55) overall, 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 8 of 11 from the foul line. The Trojans committed 24 turnovers.

Marko Malekinusic had 16 points to lead Colby. Maxence Massadila, who had 28 points against Hutchinson November, was held to 11 points.

There were four lead changes in the first four minutes of the game. Trailing 8-6, the Dragons tied the game on a J.P. Ricks transition layup and took the lead for good at 10-8 after Bundy scored following an offensive rebound. A Whitney transition 3-pointer gave the Dragons a 13-8 lead with 14:00 to play in the opening half.

After the lead dipped to only one, the Blue Dragons went on a 10-0 run that was capped by a Wagler 3-pointer with 10:24 to play for a 23-12 lead.

Leading 35-24 with a minute to play in the half, the Dragons closed with a flourish. Whitney hit a pull-up 3-pointer with 59 seconds left and Simon scored after an offensive rebound with 27 seconds to go to complete the first half shooting 54.8 percent for a 40-24 halftime lead.

A Thomas layup and two Simon free throws in the first 40 seconds of the second half gave the Dragons their first 20-point lead at 44-24. The closest Colby got in the second half was 17 points.

🏀 MBB: No. 19 Blue Dragons roll past Colby

COLBY – Led by a balanced offensive attack and stellar defensive effort, the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team reached the 20-victory milestone on Wednesday night.

The Blue Dragons had a slow offensive start, but steadily pulled away to defeat the Colby Trojans 69-35 at the Colby Event Center in the second meeting of the season.

Hutchinson improved to 20-0 overall and 14-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons reach the 20-win plateau for the 32nd time in the program's 50-year history and the 15th time in the John Ontjes era. The Blue Dragons also extended their winning streak over Colby to 19 consecutive games. Colby fell to 6-14 overall and 2-13 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons play host to Independence at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons missed 10 of their first 16 shots, but finished hitting 20 of their final 38 shot attempts to pull away, building leads as large as 36 points.

Ten of 11 Blue Dragons to suit up scored on Wednesday led by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/muggeridge_akaysha_rpaz">Akaysha Muggeridge</a>'s team-high 13 points, hitting 3 of 5 3-point goals.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;was the only other Blue Dragon to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Armstead surpassed the career 500-point mark with 509 points. Armstead added seven rebounds and three assists.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to score nine points with eight rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/pleasant_jada_61uv">Jada Pleasant</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/norris_kahlen_azmu">Kahlen Norris</a>&nbsp;had seven points each. Thomas Andrew “Tom” Robinson, 61, died January 24, 2024, at his home, in Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born September 3, 1961, in Kansas City, MO, to Paul Elbert and Betty I. (Ikenberry) Robinson.

Tom graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1981. &nbsp;He worked as a floor technician at Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp;Tom was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Kansas Central Model Railroaders (KCMR), and Community Church of the Brethren.

On August 22, 2013, he married Sarah Campbell, in Hutchinson. &nbsp;

Tom is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Sarah Robinson of Hutchinson; mother-in-law, Jean Campbell of Torrington, WY; uncle, Larry Robinson; aunt, &nbsp;Berti Davidson; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents and father-in-law, V. Howard Campbell.&nbsp;

Ethelyn M. Showalter, 78, died peacefully and surrounded by family on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Hester Care of Wesley Towers, Hutchinson. She was born September 26, 1945, in Hutchinson, to Wilbert and Vera Lyon.

In May of 1963, Ethelyn graduated from Haven High School and later attended Salt City Business College. Then on August 31, 1963, she married Glenn R. Showalter, in Haven at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. This summer they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Ethelyn was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as well as a devoted farm wife. She worked for Pioneer Seeds for 20 years and First National Bank of Hutchinson with the safety deposit boxes for 23 years. Ethelyn was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Haven and some of her hobbies included painting and baking.

She is survived by: husband, Glenn Showalter, Hutchinson; daughter, Mary Clark (John), Buhler; son, Rob Showalter; sister, Barbara Crozier-Moorhouse, Wichita; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ethelyn was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Jacquelyn “Jackie” Kelly; two brothers, Darrel Lyon and Garry Lyon.

Funeral service will be, 10:30 am Thursday, February 1, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Haven. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, with family present from 6 to 8 pm.

🏀 WBB: HutchCC moves up to No. 2 in latest NJCAA poll

Pamela Kay (Willms) Herr went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 26 th , 2024 after a battle with cancer.&nbsp;

She was born on October 27, 1949 to Donald and Vera Willms in California. Pam’s father was working on actor Fred MacMurray’s ranch at the time. Soon after, they moved back to Kansas. She grew up primarily in Nickerson. She went to college at Oklahoma Baptist University and then Wichita State University, graduating with a Bachelor in Biology degree.&nbsp;

Pam met her husband when he decided to help his college-aged neighbor shovel her driveway after the big snow of 1971. They were married at Countryside Baptist Church in Hutchinson, Kansas, on January 15, 1972 and started their 52-year adventure. &nbsp;The couple had four children: Kristin, Kara, Brian, and Lydia.&nbsp;

In 1981, Sam and Pam moved to Valley Center, Kansas. Pam was able to bring her childhood horse, Sandy, to their homestead. All of her children have fond memories of riding Sandy. Along with a love for her horse, she loved her cats, Tammy and Bammy.&nbsp;

Pam was a life-long learner. She especially enjoyed learning about all things finance. Pam was a member of Mensa for several years. She had varied interests over the years. She loved to play games, especially word games. She was an avid Boggle fan. Her sewing room contained numerous craft and sewing projects in various stages of completion. She enjoyed playing handbells, cooking, and looking for a good bargain. Her coupon box was a constant companion.

Pam appreciated the life-long friendships she developed through her Lamplighter Sunday School group and she was grateful for the friendships and assistance of her fellow Livestrong cancer support group.

Pam volunteered throughout her life. Through church she enjoyed playing handbells and helping with children’s choir. She was involved in PTA and her children’s swim team. She was also involved in the Valley Victors 4-H club, especially with teaching others to raise rabbits. She made a point to be involved in her children and later, grandchildren’s activities. She enjoyed passing on her knowledge to the grandkids, teaching them to make deviled eggs and fudge, and to play the piano.

When Pam’s last kid entered kindergarten, she started working outside the home in a variety of bookkeeping jobs. After she retired, she became a volunteer tax preparer. She has completed hundreds of tax returns for free. &nbsp;Pam enjoyed technology and she was never far from her tablet. Some would even say she was addicted to tech.&nbsp;

Pam approached the end of her earthly life with the blessed assurance that her eternal life in heaven awaited. She now has eternal life, abiding in God’s knowledge.

Pamela is survived by her husband, Samuel Herr, her children Kristin Herr, Kara (Sam) Milligan, Brian (Amber) Herr, and Lydia (Andy) Renich; 11 grandchildren Jeramiah, Gabriella, Makayla,

Elianah, Hunter, Alexia, Nathan, Scarlet, Zamara, Lucille, Augustus; mother-in-law Leona Herr; siblings Russell (Sherryl) Willms, Clifton (Kathi) Willms, Deedrie Diane (Mark) Roberts, brother-in-law Paul (Dorothy) Herr, sister-in-law Allison (Josh) Donohue, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Vera Willms, and father-in-law Joseph Herr.

Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 5 th , 2024 at Valley Center Christian Church, 1801 East 5 th Street, Valley Center, Kansas. Visitation will be that morning prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Valley Center Christian Church, 1801 East 5 th Street, Valley Center, Kansas 67147.

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team announced on Monday that its 2024 season opener will now be this Thursday, February 1 at Hobart-Detter Field.

Trying to take advantage of the warmer weather this week, the Blue Dragons will open the season against Southeast (Nebraska) Community College in a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The season opener was supposed to be Tuesday, February 6 against Central Christian, but with temperatures in the mid- to upper-50s forecast for this Thursday, the Blue Dragons and Bobcats will play two games on Thursday.

The improvised schedule for the Blue Dragons is now:

February 1 – vs. Southeast CC, 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Hobart-Detter Field

February 6 – vs. Central Christian JV, 1 p.m. at Hobart-Detter Field

February 8 – vs. Southeast CC, 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Hobart-Detter Field

February 10 – No games as originally scheduled

Lenore Waters, 88, of Hutchinson, died January 26, 2024, at Legend of Hutchinson. She was born December 14, 1935, in Stafford, KS, to Gilbert and Rosa (Thole) Flandermeyer.

Lenore graduated from Stafford High School and attended McPherson and Hutchinson Community College. She worked at Gregory, Buhler, but her real passion was being a homemaker and mother. Lenore loved spending time with her grandkids and being involved in her church. She enjoyed playing a role in Vacation Bible School, and working with the children.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church.

On June 22, 1957, she married Billy Gene Waters, in Stafford. They shared over 45 years of marriage before his passing on December 21, 2002.

Lenore is survived by: her children, Diana (Steve) Twineham and Steven (Sheri) Waters of Hutchinson, and Kathy (Roger) Hysom of Nisswa, MN; grandchildren, Jacob Waters of Lawrence, KS, Colton (Savannah) Waters of Wichita, Hunter (Kaylee) Waters of Wichita, Ashley (Alex) Petrovic of Racine, WI, and Nikki (Jesse) Delay of Wichita; and great-grandchildren, Emersyn Waters and Lilee Kilgore of Wichita.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Billy Waters, and sister, Vera Jean Goodwin.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be at a later date in Buhler East Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, at the mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The annual Bryce Luty Jazz Festival is coming to HutchCC this week.

"We have Jeff Coffin coming in as our guest artist," said Greg Weis, the Jazz professor at the college. "He is the saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band. If you're a jazz fan, you may also be familiar with him from Bella Fleck and the Flecktones. He's a three-time Grammy Award winner. Twenty-eight high school and middle school bands will get the chance to perform some music for him and our two other guest clinicians. Then they'll have a 20-minute clinic period, where they'll get to work one on one with those clinicians, working on things like improvisation, playing as an ensemble, dynamics, articulation and style."

Also on Thursday, Jeff Coffin will be offering a free masterclass that is open to the public. It will begin at 12 noon in the BJ Warner Recital Hall of Stringer Fine Arts Center.

"This is the biggest festival that we've had so far," Weis said. "We're going to be going 8 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. both days."

Now in its 49th year, the festival was named for long-time HutchCC jazz instructor Bryce Luty following his passing in 2014. The concert will include performances by the HutchCC Concert Jazz Band, under the direction of Greg Weis, and the Bryce Luty Jazz Festival All Star Band.

"We train our young jazz musicians, not only to learn their basic techniques that all musicians do, like scales and chords and all that stuff," Weis said. "Also, kind of learning music as a language, so you're having to create and converse on your own."

Tickets for the Friday, Feb. 2 7 p.m. concert are just $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for senior citizens, $5.00 for high school students and children, with Hutchinson Community College students/faculty/staff admitted free with a valid college ID.
