STERLING, Kan. — The Sterling Community Theatre Troupe will take on the musical Gypsy for the second time. The group took Gypsy to the stage in 1997 with Betsy Dutton who played Gypsy Rose Lee.&nbsp;

"I wanted to take a crack at it again having had children and just also understanding life and pushy people like Rose a little more," Betsy said.&nbsp;

Her husband, Dennis Dutton is the director of Gypsy.&nbsp;

"It's loosely based on Gypsy Rose Lee," Dennis said. "Historically, she was one of America's foremost Burlesque performers and she was driven by her mother Rose and her sister June went on to become the movie star June Havoc and so she wrote her memoirs. Gypsy Rose Lee and those memoirs provide the basis for the show Gypsy."

Betsy said Rose tends to be an attractive character for actresses. Rose has been portrayed by Ethel Merman among other famous names.&nbsp;

“It's just a juicy role and that's what you have,” Betsy said. “Recently, Audrey McDonald is going to do it this fall and so actresses are attracted to the role because not only is she comedic and gets to sing, it's also a dramatic role too."&nbsp;

The cast features all ages including six grade school kids, a few high school students and Sterling College students.&nbsp;

“We love to choose shows that we think our audience will enjoy and that we've got the people in our small community and the people in Hutchinson and such who can maybe do the roles well and so we've been fortunate in doing some really fun shows,” Dennis said. “Some that have been very classic and familiar like Gypsy but also some new ones like Disaster. Like Curtains. Like Drowsy Chaperone and so we've had a great time doing those community endeavors around the 4th of July."&nbsp; Showtimes for Gypsy are July 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. and July 7 at 2 p.m. at the Betsy Dutton Theater in Sterling High School.&nbsp;

Gypsy takes stage in Sterling this weekend

Hollis Lavonda Cochran, 63, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. 

Lavonda was born on July 17, 1960, in Parma, MO, the daughter of Charles F. Kerr and Ruth P. (Ford) Mendenhall. On November 14, 1998, she married Fred Cochran in South Hutchinson, KS. 

Lavonda graduated from Burrton High School in 1979 and attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated with an associate’s degree in nursing. Lavonda enjoyed planting a variety of plants and flowers in her gardens, and spending time with her grandkids. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ruth; stepfather, Keith Mendenhall; husband, Fred; brother, Scott Redger; and nephew, Thorne Redger. 

Lavonda is survived by her three children, Charles Brandon (Krystal) Meyer, Jeremy N. Meyer, Lacy D. (Damon) Grayson; brothers, Johnny Ford, Dennis (Leslie) Redger; sister, Sonja (Russ) Hammer; grandchildren, Devin, Kaden, Jayd, Cassadie, Alexis, Landen, Audriana, Riley, Mason and Mya.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS, with Pastor Joel Grizzle officiating. A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will take place in Burrton Cemetery, Burrton, KS. Memorials may be given to American Diabetes Foundation and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Rebel Dee Benton, 62, died June 27, 2024, at Legend of Hutchinson. She was born January 7, 1962, in Hutchinson, to Charles William Blackburn and Ellen Louise (Davis) Blackburn.

Rebel graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community Junior College and Tabor College, with a bachelor's degree of science in nursing. She was a seamstress for The Buckle. Rebel worked as a nurse for Hutch Hospital, Hutchinson Correctional Facility, Topeka Juvenile Detention Center and various nursing homes throughout Hutchinson, McPherson, Buhler and Manhattan. Rebel taught aerobics and water aerobics. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Rebel is survived by: sons, Devin Ojeda of Manhattan, Trevor Ukens of Wichita; 3 grandchildren; mother, Ellen Beachy of Hutchinson; brothers, Michael Blackburn of South Hutchinson, Nile Blackburn of Blackbear, CO, Joshua Blackburn of Jacksonville, FL and Kevin Blackburn of Missouri.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: her father, Charles W. Blackburn; and her grandparents.

Rebel Dee Benton |1962-2024|

Former Hutchinson Community College All-American golfer Dominic Clemons became the first Blue Dragon player in history to qualify for one of professional golf’s four major championships on Tuesday.

Designated an amateur because he still has collegiate eligibility remaining, Clemons’ incredible summer of 2024 got even more eventful on Tuesday after the former Blue Dragon tied professional major champion Justin Rose (2013 U.S. Open Champion) for first place in one of the four qualifying tournaments for the 152nd British Open. Clemons played at the Burnham &amp; Barrow Golf Club in Burnham-on-Sea, England.

Clemons matched Rose stroke for stroke in each round with a 5-under 66 on Monday and a 3-under 68 on Tuesday to finish tied at 8-under 134, three strokes clear of the field. Clemons carded six birdies and only one bogey on Monday and closed with seven birdies and four bogeys on Tuesday.

The 152nd Open Championship will take place on July 18-21 at Royal Troon in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Tying for The Open qualifier was just the latest spectacular performance for Clemons, who came to Hutchinson from Cambridge, England.

Already this summer, Clemons won the Scottish Men’s Open Amateur in May by 17 strokes. Then in June, Clemons advanced all the way to the finals of the 125th British Amateur, falling 4 and 3 in the 36-hole title match to Jakob Skov Olesen.

Clemons played for the Blue Dragons in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. Clemons was the No. 2 bag on Hutchinson’s second-straight team NJCAA National Champion in 2022 at the Odessa Country Club in Odessa, Texas. Clemons shot a 7-under 281 and tied for first place in the individual title chase. He lost a two-hole playoff, but still earned first-team NJCAA All-America honors.

One year later, Clemons helped the 2023 Blue Dragons to a fifth-place NJCAA nationals finish. Clemons tied for 34th individually at Sand Creek Station in Newton at 3-over 291.

After Hutchinson, Clemons transferred to Stetson University for the 2023-24 season. While with the Hatters, Clemons was a unanimous first-team All-ASUN selection, closing the year with five top-three finishes and seven top-five results in 12 tournaments.

Clemons was a three-time ASUN Golfer of the Week. He led the team in all categories and finished ranked No. 87 in the nation in the final Spikemark golf rankings. Clemons captured medalist honors at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate with a 3-under par 213 (73-70-70) to capture his first medalist honor at Stetson.

Clemons has already transferred to the University of Alabama for the 2024-25 season.

⛳ Former Blue Dragon Clemons qualifies for British Open

Rusty Laverentz is the new assistant athletic director at Hutchinson Community College.

Laverentz’s main duties will be NJCAA compliance as well as game-operations and concessions at Gowans Stadium and the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

“I am excited to add Rusty Laverentz to our Athletic Administrative team,” Blue Dragon Athletic Director Josh Gooch said. “His extensive background as a coach and then his experience in administration will be an asset to the Blue Dragon Athletic Department.”

Laverentz came to Hutchinson after serving two years as the athletic director at Missouri State University-West Plains in West Plains, Missouri. Before West Plains, Laverentz was the assistant athletic director at Pratt Community College.

Before getting fully into athletic administration, Laverentz held several different positions at schools at the NCAA and NJCAA levels.

Before Pratt, Laverentz served as the director of basketball operations for the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley women’s basketball team. Laverentz also served in the same capacity for the University of Houston’s women’s basketball team.

Laverentz has also been a head basketball coach at the NJCAA level, most recently at Connors State College in 2014-15. He was also the head coach at New Mexico Junior College from 2005-07 following five seasons as an assistant coach.

Laverentz began his coaching career as a student assistant with the women’s basketball team at Missouri Western State while playing baseball from 1993-96.

After earning his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Laverentz became a graduate assistant at Arkansas State. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education in 1998 and then stayed on one more season as a volunteer assistant coach.

Laverentz takes over for Steve Kappenman, who is now the Activities Director at Hutchinson High School.

HutchCC names Laverentz new assistant athletic director

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson Public Works Department has plans to build a new stormwater detention basin south of 23rd Ave and west of Severance Street.&nbsp; "In 2017 the City of Hutchinson had an engineering company review our stormwater master plan. A big plan that looks at how we manage stormwater flows across the entire city and through the process of reviewing that, we developed a number of projects that we thought we could build that would help reduce flooding in areas of the city and this is one of those," Project Manager for the City of Hutchinson Public Works Department Evan Patterson said.&nbsp;

According to the city, the intention behind the new stormwater detention basin is to divert stormwater from the Eastside Channel as it flows down Severance Street between 30th Ave and 23rd Ave and then slowly reintroduce it back into the Eastside Channel between 23rd Ave and 17th Ave.&nbsp;

"Particularly during storm events, we categorize them as two year storms, 10 year storms and 100 year storms so two and ten year storms will be helped out a lot by this," Patterson said. "Larger storms it's tricky because there is a lot of water but we really hope to see a lot less flooding in those adjacent neighborhoods."&nbsp;

Patterson said the problem with the location of the new basin is that it will displace a couple of practice baseball fields.&nbsp;

Patterson said the land that the basin in located on is Kansas State Fair land. The agreement the city made with the fair is that the basin will be completed by March of 2026.&nbsp;

JEO Consulting Group is the design team who is in charge of the engineering aspect of the project.&nbsp;

"They are supposed to finish that engineering by the end of the year and then we'll take all of those designs and specifications and send them out to contractors to evaluate," Patterson said.&nbsp; "They'll come back to us with bids. We'll pick a contractor so maybe March or April of next year is when construction will actually start."&nbsp;&nbsp;

The project will include some potential street closures on 23rd Ave and southbound on Severance. The project will also involve the relocation of Hutchinson Community College track and field facilities in the area. The facilities will most likely be moved sooner rather than later because HCC is hosting the national track and field championships in May of 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp;"We need to get this stuff moved over here so they can practice next spring, so we may handle this separately sometime this fall," Patterson said.&nbsp;

As of now, the total project cost is estimated at $4 million.

 </figure>EMMIE BOESE&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson Public Works Department has plans to build a new stormwater detention basin south of 23rd Ave and west of Severance Street.&nbsp; "In 2017 the City of Hutchinson had an engineering company review our stormwater master plan. A big plan that looks at how we manage stormwater flows across the entire city and through the process of reviewing that, we developed a number of projects that we thought we could build that would help reduce flooding in areas of the city and this is one of those," Project Manager for the City of Hutchinson Public Works Department Evan Patterson said.&nbsp;According to the city, the intention behind the new stormwater detention basin is to divert stormwater from the Eastside Channel as it flows down Severance Street between 30th Ave and 23rd Ave and then slowly reintroduce it back into the Eastside Channel between 23rd Ave and 17th Ave.&nbsp;"Particularly during storm events, we categorize them as two year storms, 10 year storms and 100 year storms so two and ten year storms will be helped out a lot by this," Patterson said. Public works to build stormwater detention basin

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — “Forever Plaid” the four-man musical featuring popular music from the 1950’s and 1960’s presented recently in Sterling will present two encore presentations at Hutchinson’s Stage 9 tonight Saturday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m.

The show celebrates the music and friendship along with moments of perfection and magic, particularly the experience of being in sync with others to create a perfect chord.

Forever Plaid is the story of four high schoolers who formed their own singing group and were preparing to really “hit it big” when they were killed in a car crash before ever having the chance. This show is their return to earth to get their one chance at their “big break.”

The musical makes a feast of the lush harmonies of “golden oldies” with songs such as "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Moments to Remember," "Sixteen Tons," "Chain Gang," "Heart and Soul," "Lady of Spain," "Shangri-La," "Rags to Riches," and of course, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing."

The Sterling quartet in “Plaid” already have the chemistry of four buddies down because they are. Luke Harding, Caleb Brownlee, Noah Svaty – all are Sterling High School alumni. The fourth is Robbie Stansbury, from Lyons High School. All four have been close friends through their experiences in music and theatre at Sterling College.

They started singing Barbershop music on their own over a year ago and discovered Forever Plaid about the same time. Harding said, “We all absolutely love harmonies. When I found out there was an entire show centered around a singing male quartet, I knew we needed to do it.”

The encore performances in Hutchinson are being presented as a fundraiser for the cast and crew to take the show to Alaska in July. 

They are planning to perform the show in the remote small town of Cordova, Alaska where they will also be offering a theatre camp for young people. 

Admission to the Hutchinson presentations of “Forever Plaid” will be by donation rather than a standard ticket price. 

Stage 9 is located in downtown Hutchinson at 9 South Main.

Angela S. Johnson, 56, of Hutchinson, died June 23, 2024, at Hospice House. She was born August 25, 1967, to Gayland and Shirley (Cox) Williams.

Angela graduated from Enterprise Academy in 1985 and attended Hutchinson Community College.

She was married to and had three sons with Charles Johnson; they later divorced.

Angela is survived by her: mother, Shirley Williams of Hutchinson; father, Gayland Williams of Hutchinson; sons, Nathan Johnson of Overland Park, Jaye Johnson of Austin, TX, and SGT. Cameron Johnson of the U.S. Army; brothers, Keith Williams of Wichita and Ivan Williams of San Jose, CA; and sister, Carmela Williams of Frisco, TX.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2024, at Hutchinson Friends Church, 1200 E 14th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67501.&nbsp;

Rotary to meet Monday at noon

Harold John Dirksen, 95, died June 25, 2024, at Hospice House. He was born June 15, 1929, in Hutchinson, to Peter John “Pete” and Bertha Luella (Prichard) Dirksen.

Harold received his GED while serving in the United States Army and attended the Salt City Business College. He was a Staff Sargent of the United States Army and served for eight years, as well as a member of the United States Air Force, where he served for four years. Harold worked as a clerk for the Morton Salt Company for over 35 years. In retirement, he and his wife, Fumiko, began dealing antiques at local flea markets. Harold was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his time fishing around Cheney, Neosho and Abilene. He liked to find and collect old bottles.

On January 13, 1954, he married Fumiko Tanaka, in Tokyo, Japan. They shared over 74 years of marriage.

Harold is survived by: wife, Fumiko Dirksen of Hutchinson; children, Diana (Charlie) Mitzner of Abbyville, Steve (Tina) of Salina; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; children, John Dirksen, Dianna Dirksen; sisters, Juanita Gross and Katherine Scantlin.

Memorial service will be held at a later date, cremation has taken place.

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College took home two awards from the Wichita Sports Commission's banquet Wednesday at Intrust Bank Arena.

Kiki Smith was named the Junior College Female Athlete of the Year and John Ontjes was named the Gene Stephenson Coach of the Year.

Greater Wichita Area Athletic Directors were sent nomination forms in April, and members of the local media voted to determine the finalists.

🏀 Smith, Ontjes win awards at Wichita Sports Commission banquet

Surrounded by his loving family, Calvin (Cal) Unruh, 82,&nbsp; passed away at Pine Village, Moundridge, Kansas, on June 25, 2024.&nbsp; Cal was born on June 22, 1942, at Bethesda Hospital in Goessel, Kansas to Raymond and Stella (Reimer) Unruh.

Cal grew up in rural Galva, Kansas and attended South Union and Sunflower Grade Schools. Cal was the oldest of four children and enjoyed paving the way for the other siblings—sometimes pushing the rules a bit. He attended Moundridge High School where he met the love of his life, Marlene Stucky. Together they enjoyed high school activities, various singing groups, prom and dances at Teen Town.&nbsp; Later they were united in marriage on July 14, 1962, at Eden Mennonite Church and enjoyed 61 years of marriage. Upon confession of faith, Cal was baptized in 1958 at West Zion Mennonite Church in Moundridge, Kansas and later in life became a member of McPherson Mennonite Church, McPherson, Kansas. He received a Bachelor of Science degree at McPherson College where he also played football.

In 1971, another lady entered the Unruh family when daughter Kristal was born. Kristal and her husband, Shane Boswell, were very attentive and helpful as Cal’s health declined in recent months.

Cal had some interesting jobs in his lifetime. He was a purchasing agent at Hesston Corporation, worked at the Parks and Recreation departments in Hutchinson, Kansas and Yuma, Arizona (where he was also a local TV weather forecaster celebrity). He was also an Over The Road trucker for various companies and at one time owned his own trucking equipment and worked as an independent driver.

Everyone who met Cal knew he had a passion for NASCAR racing and motorcycles. Cal liked speed and was thrilled to have the opportunity to do solo laps in a NASCAR race car at the Kansas Speedway Racing Experience. Cal was a “Harley Man” and owned several Harley Davidson motorcycles. He even joked that he would have a specially designed coffin in the shape of a Harley. While he had many motorcycle friends, Cal particularly enjoyed discussing all things motorcycle and riding with his special friend, Stan Stucky. Cal was able to convince Marlene to ride with him on several trips, with the most memorable to Sturgis, South Dakota. Cal and his brother, Wayne, started basketball officiating at Sunflower Grade School and while Wayne continued his officiating career, Cal opted to be an avid sports fan who did not very often miss a televised Kansas Jayhawks basketball game.&nbsp; Another sports highlight for Cal was playing doubles tennis with professional Rosemary Casals who was known as a tennis rebel—a perfect fit for Cal.

Cal leaves many special friends with whom he and Marlene enjoyed ski trips in Colorado and additional travels to Cancun and the Caribbean. He had a caring spirit for other people and was a mentor to a young man at First Mennonite Church.&nbsp; Cal was kind-hearted, mischievous, and loved to tell a good joke even though he got eye-rolling looks from Marlene.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wayne Unruh; parents-in-law John and Cora Stucky, sisters-in-law Vera Thiesen, Pat Stucky and Betty Stucky; brothers-in-law Merlin Thiesen, and Howard Kaufman; Niece Kimberly Kaufman.

Mourning Cal’s departure are his wife, Marlene; daughter and husband, Kristal Unruh and Shane Boswell of McPherson, Kansas; sisters Maggie (Gary) Davenport of Leawood, Kansas and Debra (Terry) Schmidt of Lawrence, Kansas; and special canine companions, Stormy and Vinny.&nbsp; Survivors also include sisters-in-law Helen Unruh, Neva Kaufman and Judy (Roger) Krehbiel; and brothers-in-law Wayne (Sharon) Stucky, Ken Stucky and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 N. Chestnut, McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp; A graveside service will be at 9:30 AM, Monday, July 1, at McPherson Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 10:30 AM, at First Mennonite Church, 1161 East A Ave., McPherson. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Memorials have been established at Pine Village &nbsp;and First Mennonite Church in care of the Stockham Family Funeral Home.

File to have title change after special trustees meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dimitriy Vakulenko with the Hutchinson Rotary Club let Hutch Post know that the club is one of the oldest in the organization.

"Hutchinson Rotary Club was founded in 1915, just 10 years after the Rotary International was founded," Vakulenko said. "Our club has a long and rich tradition as the largest and oldest civic organization in Reno County. Thanks to our forward-thinking founders, we are the club number 189 in the world out of more than 35,000 Rotary International clubs globally."

Lisa Gleason said the club has been giving to youth in the area recently.

"We gave back $20,000 to the community," Gleason said. "This year, we did 15 grants, and it's all focused around youth. We support activities and nonprofits that do work in youth education, youth leadership, youth literacy, and youth health, and we gave out 15 grants, and we're so excited to be able to support the community in that way."

The club meets the first and third Mondays of each month and they also meet on the fifth Monday of the month in months that have one.

"One of the huge benefits of Rotary is it's just a great networking organization, a place for you to come, have some lunch, learn something because we always have a great speaker at our lunches," Gleason said. "Also you get to sit with some of your favorite people and people maybe you've never met before and get to learn a little bit more about them."

The meetings are from noon to 1 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College.

Rotary is long-time Hutchinson organization

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three future Hutchinson Community College football players will play one final game representing their high schools, as the 51st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl Game will kickoff on Saturday.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.&nbsp;

DaeOnte' "Paco" Mitchell (Wichita East) and Blaise Hoover (McPherson) will each represent the West Team, while Kaleb Scott (Basehor-Linwood) will be on the East Team. Mitchell will wear jersey number&nbsp;

Mitchell will go down as one of the best to ever play in the Greater Wichita Athletic League. He finished his prep career at East as the all-time passing yards leader (7,848) and the all-time total yards leader (11,168). The dual-threat quarterback also etched his name in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame record book for his strong senior campaign. Mitchell holds the 11-man single season passing completion percentage (82.4), and also is now the 11-man career passing completion percentage (77.6) holder.

Hoover finished up his time at McPherson High School with a bang, claiming the individual class 4A state golf title in the spring. Hoover finished off his round with a Birdie and an Eagle to claim the title by two shots. Hoover was also a big part of the Bullpups' success on the gridiron, both as a kicker and a wide receiver. Hoover racked up the all-league honors for football, as he was named the Offensive Player of the Year, plus First-Team at receiver, kicker and punter.

Scott was an explosive playmaker for the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats, on all three sides of the football. Scott returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this past fall, plus had over 800 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Scott had over 1400 all-purpose yards, the most on the team. He was named to the United Kansas Conference First-Team at defensive back.

Other area student-athletes that will be participating in the game on Saturday include Teegan Haines (McPherson), Tristen Davidson (Kingman), Mason Jones (Hutchinson), and Nick Ruth (Newton).

McPherson head coach Jace Pavlovich will serve as the head coach for the West Team.

🏈 3 future Blue Dragons to play in Kansas Shrine Bowl Game Saturday

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The Vancouver Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) has signed former HutchCC and Baylor standout, Devonte Bandoo, for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Bandoo appeared in 72 games for the Blue Dragons from 2016-18, making 36 starts. He averaged nearly 15 points, five rebounds and 2.5 assists during his time in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

He was a key part in helping the Blue Dragons claim the national championship in 2017, an 84-58 win over Eastern Florida State College. Bandoo scored 22 points off the bench in the title game.

The Brampton, Ontario, Canada native finished his collegiate career at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Bandoo appeared in 64 games for the Bears, starting 10 games. He averaged eight points and three rebounds for BU.

🏀 MBB: Former Blue Dragon Bandoo inks new pro deal in Canada

We mournfully announce the passing of Joshua Lee Dickinson, 46, of South Hutchinson, KS. Josh went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 13, 2024. Josh was born to Jim and Irene (Ryff) Dickinson, took his first breath on June 30, 1977.

Josh was a force to be reckoned with from the get-go, attending Faris Elementary School, Liberty Middle School, and Hutchinson High School, earning his GED in 1995. He also attended Hutchinson Community College.

While Josh never married, he dearly loved and was dearly loved by more family and friends than one could count. He loved helping others and volunteered at his Mother’s Daycare where he shared his “kid at heart” personality and was adored by all the children. 

Although Josh suffered from debilitating asthma, he enjoyed many hobbies including reading, listening and creating music and helping anybody and everybody he possibly could. He was also a member of Union Valley Bible Church. We will miss him beyond measure.

Josh is survived by: his mother, Irene Dickinson; grandmother, Lois Ryff; sister, Elizabeth Dickinson; nephew and best buddy, James K. Dickinson; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. 

He was preceded in death by: his father, James C. Dickinson; grandfather, Kenneth Ryff; grandparents, Glenn and Esther Dickinson; and uncle, Craig Dickinson. 

A celebration of life will take place Saturday, June 29th, 2024, at 10:30am, at Union Valley Bible Church, 1916 E 30th, Hutchinson, with Pastor Steve Hodgson officiating.

Alfred ‘Charlie’ Elmer Buck, died June 18, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was born January 13, 1941, in Hutchinson, KS, to Albert McKinnley Buck and Oleta Faye (Hamblin) Buck.

Charlie was a 1959 graduate of Partridge High School, Partridge, KS, and attended Hutchinson Community College. &nbsp;He was the president of Buck Roofing Inc., formerly AB Roofing, for 34 years.

On June 26, 1964, Charlie married Charlene Cheryl Brown at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 59 years of marriage, prior to her death on October 25, 2023.

Charlie is survived by: his sons, Mark (Karla) Buck and John Buck, both of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren, Sara (Adam) Brenton, Blake Buck, and Mariah Buck; great-grandchildren, Teagan Buck, Bretley Buck, and Ethen Logan; and sisters, Lorraine (Dave) Warnken of Hutchinson, KS, and Connie (Kenneth) Wise of Oklahoma.

Alfred ‘Charlie’ Elmer Buck |1941-2024|

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tony Helfrich started at Hutch Rec as the Director of Nature Education &amp; Outdoor Recreation at Dillon Nature Center on May 28. 

He comes to Hutch Rec with past parks and recreation experience, most recently as the Director of Wellness &amp; Adventure Programs at McPherson College. He also has a background in fitness administration as the director of a gym and aquatic facility. Helfrich was born and raised in Hutchinson and attended Kansas State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.

In his role at Hutch Rec, Helfrich is responsible for operations at Dillon Nature Center, including the facility and grounds as well as program development, namely in nature education and outdoor recreation. He offices at Dillon Nature Center, located at 3002 E. 30th Avenue in Hutchinson.

“I look forward to the next chapter of my career serving Hutch Rec and Dillon Nature Center. Four generations of my family have enjoyed creating memories at Dillon Nature Center and I have a deep respect for its history,” Helfrich says. “My vision is to honor the past by continuing to progress our mission of outdoor recreation and nature education into the future through increased programming, facility improvements, on-site engagement, and outreach efforts into our community.”

Jordan Gray started at Hutch Rec as the agency’s Sports Coordinator on May 6. He comes to Hutch Rec after working at the Hutchinson-Reno County YMCA in youth sports.

In his role at Hutch Rec, Gray is responsible for the coordination and implementation of youth and adult sports programs, including recreational and competitive leagues, tournaments, and non-traditional sports. He offices out of Hutch Rec Downtown, 17 E. 1st Ave and the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Gray graduated with an associate’s degree from Hutchinson Community College and is currently studying sports management at Wichita State University, where he will graduate with his bachelor’s degree in Spring 2025.

“I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to dive into the exciting journey ahead at Hutch Rec,” Gray says. “I’m ready to take our community’s love for sports to the next level, combining my local roots with education to serve the community.”

He comes to Hutch Rec after working at the Hutchinson-Reno County YMCA in youth sports.In his role at Hutch Rec, Gray is responsible for the coordination and implementation of youth and adult sports programs, including recreational and competitive leagues, tournaments, and non-traditional sports. He offices out of Hutch Rec Downtown, 17 E. 1st Ave and the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Hutch Rec announces hiring of two new staff members

Viola Huls, 93, of Hutchinson, died June 14, 2024, at Wesley Towers. She was born on September 30, 1930, in Gage County, NE, to Carl and Ell Nina (Weber) Haecker.

Viola attended school in rural Gage County and later graduated from Adela Hale Business College. She was employed at Osco Drug for over 23 years. Viola was a longtime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

On January 21, 1950, Viola married Clarence Huls in Beatrice, NE. They shared over 65 years of marriage before his passing on June 17, 2015.

Viola is survived by her daughter, Marsha (Max Carter) Cline of Hutchinson; six grandchildren, Chad (Debbi) Nachtigal of Hutchinson, Jason (Leta) Nachtigal of Ponder, TX, Jamie (Misty) Nachtigal of Abbyville, Andrea (Matt) Parker of Hutchinson, Christina Cline of Hutchinson, and Jessica Cline of Hutchinson; fifteen great-grandchildren; and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Teresa Nachtigal; son-in-law, George Nachtigal; three brothers; and two sisters.

Cremation has taken place. Private family inurnment will take place at the Emanuel Lutheran Church Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Emanuel Lutheran Church or Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Rotary Club of Hutchinson speaker for their Monday meeting is David Foster of the Hutchinson YMCA. The meeting is Monday, June 17 at noon at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College.

David&nbsp;Foster&nbsp;is in his 27th year as an employee of the YMCA.&nbsp;&nbsp;He began his YMCA career with the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City in 1997 and has had the opportunity to serve in a variety of leadership positions at YMCAs in Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, and Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He has been the branch director of the Hutchinson YMCA since May 10, 2022. 

David&nbsp;is involved in his local community having served in local Rotary Clubs, Chamber of Commerce Boards, and various other leadership capacities, and is currently a member of the Hutchinson Rotary Club. In addition, he has spoken at national YMCA conferences on a variety of topics including board/volunteer development and community partnerships.&nbsp;
