Cheryl Ann (Harris) Kuhn, 81, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025, at Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 23, 1943, in Hutchinson, she was the daughter of Elbert “Bubs” and Bonnie Jean (Miller) Harris. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961 and was a lifelong resident of Hutchinson. Cheryl was a devoted mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose kindness and warmth touched everyone who knew her.

Cheryl’s faith was a guiding light in her life. As a devoted member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, she found great comfort in her spirituality. She also cherished life’s simple joys—spending time at the lake, shopping on QVC, and most importantly, being with her family.

On November 25, 1961, Cheryl married Robert “Bob” Kuhn in Hutchinson. They shared 52 wonderful years together before his passing on April 26, 2014.

Cheryl is survived by her children, Stephanie Stephens, Brian (Shelly) Kuhn, and Jordan (Michelle) Nuss; her brothers, Zac (Lavonne) Harris and Homer (Melodie) Harris; her grandchildren, Dallas Stephens, Madison (Austin) Zolman, Harlea (Robert Magill) Stephens, Levi (Austin Baragary) Kuhn, Tyson (Rylie) Kuhn, Lyndsey (Nathan) Reed, and Chelsey (Mikel Bohringer) Miller; and her nine great-grandchildren, Bronson, Madalyn, Avery, Sofeah, Wyatt, Grayson, Jaxon, Adalee, and Tatum; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her family was her greatest joy; she created a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gary Harris; and her beloved husband, Bob Kuhn.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Fairlawn Burial Park, with Father Jerome Spexarth officiating. Visitation will be held at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel &amp; Crematory on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 1:00-6:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Rosary will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Father Jerome Spexarth.

Jerry Dean Josephson, 77, died March 8, 2025, at his home. &nbsp;He was born September 3, 1947, in Hutchinson, to Jack Leon and Norma Jean (Tice) Josephson.&nbsp;

Jerry graduated from Nickerson High School in 1965. &nbsp;Three months after graduating high school, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Vietnam. &nbsp;After returning from Vietnam, Jerry attended barber school. &nbsp;For over 46 years, he owned Jerry’s Barber Styling, in South Hutchinson. &nbsp;Jerry enjoyed swimming at the YMCA, listening to music, and cheering on the K-State Wildcats. &nbsp;In 1998, Jerry was diagnosed with soft-tissue sarcoma, a result of exposure to Agent Orange during Vietnam. &nbsp;Despite his diagnosis and needed procedures, he remained positive, thankful, and appreciative for everything the Veteran’s Administration did for him, as well as his family and friends. &nbsp;In 2019, Jerry was able to attend the Kansas Honor Flight with his daughter, Brecken. In addition, Jerry was a member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post 68 and Bob Campbell VFW Post 1361.&nbsp;

On April 6, 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Vicki Sue Dean, in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Jerry is survived by: &nbsp;the love of his life for almost 57 years, Vicki of Hutchinson; daughter, Brecken MacMahon (Bryan Gentry) of Simi Valley, CA; brother, Jeff Josephson (Doris) of Olathe; stepsister, Sandra “Sandy” Zwick (Gary) of Sterling; nephews, Zach Josephson and Cody Josephson; niece, Chelsea Josephson, all of Olathe; and a host of former clients and friends. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; stepmother, Margaret Yvonne Josephson; daughter, Megan Renee Josephson; and stepsister, Nancy McConnell.&nbsp;

The consent agenda for the commission includes: -&nbsp;Appointments of Dr. Marilyn Graham and Lynnette Krieger-Zook to the Reno County Council on Aging -&nbsp;Caterpillar Certified Powertrain Rebuild from Foley Equipment on Solid Waste Equipment #322 623G Scraper in the amount of $590,251.53 - Purchase of one (1) 2025 CAT D6 Dozer with landfill package for the Solid Waste Department from Foley Equipment in Wichita, KS in the amount of $593,490 - Purchase of five (5) New Bull Mobile Litter Fences at the Solid Waste Department from Metta Technologies for $38,300.00 - Public Works request to purchase one (1) Truck and Truck Mounted Striping Machine, As a Unit, from M-B C

Business items on the agenda include Reno County Health Department (RCHD)’s Aid-to-Local (ATL) Grant Application for $975,950.27, and KDHE Healthy Families passthrough grant for $320,000.&nbsp;

On an annual basis, the RCHD must have the Board of County Commissioners sign their Aid-to- Local Grant Application Signature page. The grant period is from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, for $975,950.27.

In a request from Prairie Dunes, the club is asking for the same amount that they asked for from their request in 2006. In 2006 the county pledged $100,000 and offered "in kind" services with law enforcement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The City of Hutchinson city council approved a similar request at their Feb. 18, 2025 meeting. The only difference is that the city pledged $200,000 to Prairie Dunes for the event.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno County Commission to meet Wednesday morning

Dr. Anthony Clarke Beauchamp, 92, died March 4, 2025, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born January 11, 1933, in Manhattan, New York, to Andres and Margaret (Perez) Beauchamp.&nbsp;

Dr. Anthony graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge, New York. In May of 1950, Dr. Anthony proudly enlisted in the United States Navy to fight for his country. He bravely fought in the Korean War, serving as a boatswain’s mate second class aboard the U.S.S. Orion. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal during this time, and returned home in December of 1953. He then joined the United States Navy Reserve, serving as a lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps from 1954 to 1958. After his military service, he attended New York University for his undergraduate studies. Following his time at NYU, he pursued a master’s degree at Columbia University and then completed his Ph.D. from St. Andrew’s College in 1961.&nbsp;

Dr. Anthony was a licensed specialist clinical social worker and mental health educator. Throughout his career, he served patients in various medical facilities and clinics back East and in Kansas, including Prairie View Community Mental Health Center, Horizons Mental Health Center, and The Hutchinson Medical Center. Later on in life, he established his own private practice in Hutchinson and eventually retired in 2000.

In his spare time, Dr. Anthony enjoyed U.S. history, literature, reading, and watching movies. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and his bulldogs, and was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Dr. Anthony was previously married to Dimple Hart, then they divorced. On November 1, 1980, he married Jeanine Lucille Meirowsky, in Wichita. She survives.

Other survivors include: his children, Glen, Sharon, Cheryl, Christopher (Lisa), Marshall (Cynthia); grandson, Calvin; and brother, Diego (Bonnie). He will also be missed by his many extended family members and friends.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: parents; sister, Bonaventure; and brother, Andrew.&nbsp;

Parish rosary will be 10 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2025, both at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2631 Independence Rd, Hutchinson, with Father Jerome Spexarth officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College campus will once again be busy this week with the return of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) class 3A boys and girls state basketball tournaments.

The four-day event runs Wednesday, March 12 through Saturday, March 15 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. There will be four games per day, with girls playing quarterfinals Wednesday and boys on Thursday. Friday features semifinal action and then on Saturday the 3rd place games and state title games.

This year marks the 71st KSHSAA state tournament that the Hutchinson Sports Arena has hosted. The arena opened in 1952, and has hosted a tournament every year with the exception of 1973 and 1974. Overall, this will be the 82nd state tournament held in the Salt City, as 10 tournaments were hosted at Memorial Hall prior to the completion of the Sports Arena.

"It brings families, it brings students to our community," HutchCC athletic director Josh Gooch said. "They're eating in our restaurants, stay in our hotels, shop in our shops, it's larger than just our community college, although that's where the games are held at either at the Sports Arena or at Gowans Stadium. Our Visit Hutch, our collaboration with Visit Hutch, the chamber, they're a close partner with us as we navigate securing those events. We take a lot of pride in our relationship with KSHSAA."

Bill Faflick, the executive director of the KSHSAA is happy to continue the partnership with Hutchinson for the numerous sports.

"The KSHSAA is fortunate to have the opportunity to conduct championship activities in Hutchinson," Faflick said. "We make the decision to continue to host events in Hutchinson because of the people who are conducting those events. More specifically, we believe the staff at Hutchinson Community College, under the leadership of AD Josh Gooch, understand the importance of creating a championship atmosphere for students and the school communities participating in championship tournaments. Addressing an almost unending list of details, Josh and his team realize each of those items make a difference for those coming to events they host."

Whether it's state football, state basketball, or state volleyball, each event takes a village to make possible.

"With the events we host it does take everybody," Gooch said. "The facilities staff is second to none, the reason why we can turn the events and host multiple games in days is because our facilities staff is prepped and prepared or the field and the places where the patrons are, the ins and outs of the buildings and stadiums are as nice as they get anywhere you go. We've got an army of people that make these events possible. We started working on this year's state basketball tournament on January 14 when I looked back at my notes."

A repreresentative from the KSHSAA comes to Hutchinson and meets with the staff to make sure they're prepared to host.

"They go over any of the new items that might be taking place that year," Gooch said. "They also tell us some things we can improve on and things that they want to highlight that we do well. Each of my staff has different roles and the volunteers each have their own roles, as well."

One of those staff members is HutchCC sports information director Steve Carpenter. Of the many tasks Carpenter has, one is the media contact for all media attending the 3A tournament.&nbsp;

"I have checked on this with KSHSAA and we are by and large the most heavily covered tournament from a media standpoint," Carpenter said. "Early on, I take care of getting all of the credentials administered to and making sure we've got them all locked in for when the tournament starts."

Once the games tipoff on Wednesday, Carpenter can be found on his laptop at the table on the south side of the Sports Arena.

"You'll see me at the scorers table, myself and my stat crew, constantly running stats," Carpenter said. "This year I thought about wearing a pedometer to track my steps, because we run stats at every timeout. The stats to me are very important, because they have to be accurate, this is the one chance we get to do it. Especially if there are state records or anything, we want to make sure we are specifically accurate with that and there's no having to go back and question it. I take a lot of pride in the stats. I also help out with all of the on-table help if any troubleshooting is needed."

One thing that Faflick enjoys about the staff at HutchCC, is their willingness to run the event like a true championship culture.

"While many host sites 'turn the venue over' to state association and school staff, Josh and his team have stepped up and fill every position needed for multi-day championship tournaments in volleyball and basketball, as well as for a championship game in football," Faflick said. "The Hutchinson Community College team provides a great first impression for all stakeholders, including students, coaches, parents, administrators, media, and general spectators. Josh and his team consider the overall goal of fair play and a great experience for student athletes competing for the coveted championship, all while considering the minute details which make a huge difference for stakeholders."

There are around 100 individuals that put in countless hours to make the week happen.

"You have my staff of five," Gooch said. "Then you have 16 team hosts, people throughout the community that are the point of contact for that specific team about anything they may need from restaurants to go to or things to do, that's a tradition we've always had and that the teams coming in look forward to. Our workforce continues with the facilities crew and it doesn't end when people leave the venue, they're still working. We also have ball help to make sure the proper balls are out for the girls and the boys. Then we have concessions help, a lot of our Blue Dragon student-athletes that are on work-study help with that. Ticket takers and ticket sellers, we have to have people getting patrons in and out of the facility. We have a pass gate where all the members that are participating are going in. Merchandise booth, hospitality room, the scorers table, the officials, the awards presenters, there are a lot of people that make this tournament possible."

One thing that will be new at this year's tournament is the Hutch Madness Trivia game, which is a special engagement with Visit Hutch. There is a QR code that will be put on the video board and you scan it where each game there will be trivia and then it'll keep track of your points and you'll have an opportunity to win prizes from area businesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Josiah Queen and Ben Fuller to perform at Kansas State Fair 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School alum Kaleb Hammeke scored 22 points to lead Fort Hays State University to the MIAA Tournament championship Sunday at Municipal Auditorium.

Hammeke sank two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 72-71 lead over Central Oklahoma, sealing the game-winning points and sending FHSU to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Hammeke played all 40 minutes of the championship game, finishing with 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Over three tournament games, the graduate student averaged 20.7 points, 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 38.0 minutes per contest.

His younger brother, Lucas Hammeke, also on the FHSU roster, scored six points and recorded a team-high five assists in the title game. He averaged 5.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists in the tournament.

Kaleb Hammeke, a 2019 Trinity Catholic graduate, became FHSU’s all-time leading scorer earlier this season. The 6-foot guard has totaled 2,048 points and 575 rebounds in 142 career games, all of which he started.

Lucas Hammeke, a 2021 Trinity Catholic graduate, has appeared in 57 career games, averaging 2.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

The Tigers secured their second MIAA Tournament title and their first since 2011. They enter the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 22-9 record, finishing 12-7 in MIAA play.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State will be the No. 7 seed in the Washburn regional and will face No. 2 Minnesota State University Moorehead (23-8) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

🏀 Trinity Catholic alums lead Fort Hays State to MIAA Tournament title

RENO COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just after 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a GMC Denali driven by Lyric&nbsp;Keeler, 21, Pretty Prairie, was southbound on Kansas 14 just south of Redrock Road.

The SUV traveled off the roadway to the right and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle overturned while reentering the roadway.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Keeler and a 3-year-old female passenger to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. A 9-month-old passenger was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

🏀 KSHSAA releases state tournament brackets

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/green_aiyanna_nkel">Aiyanna Green</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/picolet_jordan_z3sx">Jordyn Picolet</a>&nbsp;both had Hutchinson Community College women's track and field indoor Top-10 performances on Saturday on the final day of the 2025 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Green, a sophomore thrower from Hutchinson, had the best Blue Dragon finish of Day 2 with a ninth-place performance in the women's weight throw. Green posted a career-best throw of 50 feet, 6 inches (15.39 meters). That throw ranks third in Blue Dragon women's indoor history.

Picolet, a sophomore distance runner from Council Grove, Kansas, posted the fifth-best time in the women's 1,000-meter run, finishing 12th with a time of 5:18.67.

The Blue Dragons finished in a tie for 25th place with five points. Those points came from Deisheline Mayer Scott and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/montaque_janiel_88cd">Janiel Montaque</a>, who placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put on Friday.

Other Blue Dragon performances on Saturday:

+ Mayer Scott placed 18th in the weight throw with a top throw of 44-0 (13.41 meters).

+ Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/grantham_abigail_40ez">Abigail Grantham</a>&nbsp;was 20th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 5:20.85.

+ Sophomore Laura Avila was 27th in the 1,000 meters in a time of 5:38.88.

Iowa Western won the women's team national championship with 114 points. Barton was the women's national runner-up with 105 points.

The Blue Dragons will open the 2025 outdoor season on Saturday, March 29 at the Mark A. Phillips Classic in Arkansas City.

👟 Dragons post two top-10 times on final day at NJCAA indoor 

Carl Rex Waggoner, 44, died March 5, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born February 11, 1981, in Hutchinson, to George Thomas and Amy Elizabeth (Howell) Waggoner.

Carl graduated from Normandy Tech High School, St. Louis County, MO, in 2001. He worked for Mass Trucking Co. and Titus as a truck driver and for Ryder as a truck dispatcher. Carl also worked as a heavy equipment operator for many companies in Kansas, as a security guard in Wichita, and was a beekeeper in Colorado. He was a devoted father and loyal friend; Carl would do anything for anybody. He enjoyed camping and cooking for others. Carl’s passion was riding motorcycles and he was in the Odin’s Ghost Motorcycle Club. He attended Bethany Nazarene Church, Hutchinson.

Carl was survived by: his children, Ashton Waggoner, Samora Waggoner, both of Great Bend, Jacob Carson and Jordan Waggoner, both of Hutchinson, Allen Palmatier, Ariel Palmatier, Araya Palmatier, Willo Dudrey; great-grandchildren, Azalea Palmatier, Grayson McVey, Wesley McVey, Ember Palmatier, Calix Palmatier; mother, Amy Waggoner of Hutchinson, siblings, Casey Renee (Dave) Ruzicka of Marshfield, MO, George Cayln Robert (Nicole) Waggoner of Hutchinson, grandmother, Vicki Swanson of Hutchinson; aunts, Karla (Tim) Reed of Berryton, Karla (Dave) Anderson of Lisle, IL, Karen (Gordon) Priemer of Bath, OH, Wendy Deibert and Stormi (Mark) Kidd, all of Highland, IL; uncles, Ryan (Robin) Swanson of Hutchinson, Blake (Shelby) Waggoner of Durham, NC, Lance Waggoner of Mulberry Grove, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of Life will be from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, at Elliott Mortuary. In respect of Carl’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

HAYS, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School Salthawk girls' season came to a heartbreaking end in the sub-state championship Friday night, falling to the Hays High Indians 56-17.

The Salthawk boys came up short against Hays on Wednesday night in the first round of sub-state play, seeing a four-point lead slip away in the final quarter as the Indians advanced with a 48-43 win.

Despite the girls' tough loss, the Salthawks had already established themselves as one of the most formidable teams in Kansas, finishing with a 16-8 record and proving they were more than capable of competing with the state’s best.

The Salthawks had an impressive run that included some unforgettable moments. Just as they started the season strong, the Salthawks opened Friday night's game with a brief but promising 4-0 lead, but the Indians’ relentless defense and efficient offense quickly turned the tide.

Still, Hutchinson had already earned its place in the spotlight earlier in the season with a stunning 58-54 victory over the top-ranked Derby Panthers on Valentine’s Day. The win was a statement, as Derby was not only the top team in Class 6A but also ranked No. 1 in the state across all classifications.

Another standout moment came in the first round of sub-state against No. 9 seed Andover Central, where the Salthawks cruised to a 60-37 win. That performance was a testament to the team's depth and resilience, especially with players stepping up in key moments.

But as much as this season was about victories, it was also about the players who made it all possible. Hutchinson will miss the leadership of Grace Posh, a four-year varsity player who scored 971 points in her high school career. Posh’s commitment, skill and competitive spirit will be hard to replace as the team looks to rebuild.

Along with Posh, the Salthawks will say goodbye to senior standouts Lily Rodriguez and Kaia Smith. Smith averaged 13.8 points per game, while Rodriguez was the player who initiated the offense at point guard. Their contributions were invaluable and will leave a lasting mark on Hutchinson basketball. However, their legacy will be carried on by junior starters Ava Krone and Kohlbie Craft. Both have proven themselves as key players and will be instrumental in the team's future.

Sophomore point guard Tenley Keeton and junior shooting guard Clara Ontjes also made a significant impact off the bench this season and will be players to watch moving forward. The Salthawks will look to build on this season’s momentum and develop their younger players as they prepare for next year.

Meanwhile, the Hays High Indians will take their undefeated 22-0 record to Emporia, where they will compete in the Class 5A state tournament for the first time in 29 years. Their victory over Hutchinson solidified their standing as one of the top teams in the state, but Hutchinson’s grit and determination throughout the season showed they were not far behind.

As the Salthawks reflect on a season full of highs and lows, one thing is clear: this group of players, coaches and fans created something special. And while they will miss their seniors, the future is bright for Hutchinson basketball under second-year head coach Kalen Hilst and assistant coaches Shayla DeGarmo-Cruz and Lyric Martin.

The season got off to a rough start as the Salthawks hit a tough stretch in January. A grueling seven-game losing streak, including three losses at the McPherson Invitational, had Hutchinson reeling. That tournament seemed like a microcosm of their entire month: competitive games that ended in heartbreak. The Salthawks went 0-3 at McPherson, but the close losses stung the most. Four of those setbacks in January were by a combined total of just 12 points, underscoring the team’s resilience. Still, the inability to close out opponents left Hutchinson searching for answers.

Despite the adversity, the Salthawks didn’t fold under pressure. The grit they showed during that tough stretch paid off as they managed to string together five consecutive victories. The momentum was palpable, and Hutchinson started to find its rhythm just when it mattered most. This late-season surge gave them confidence heading into their sub-state game against Hays.

Then came the night that changed everything — the unforgettable Feb. 14 upset.

The Hutchinson Salthawks took the court against an undefeated, top-ranked opponent in a game that had all the makings of a David vs. Goliath matchup. Their opponent, a powerhouse with a perfect season record, was expected to dominate. But the Salthawks were not intimidated. With precision shooting, sharp defense and collective willpower, Hutchinson pulled off a stunning 67-63 win.

Led by standout performances from key players, the Salthawks capitalized on every opportunity, making clutch shots and playing tenacious defense down the stretch. The game was tight throughout, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. But with seconds remaining and the score neck and neck, Hutchinson remained calm under pressure. A pair of crucial free throws and a final defensive stop sealed the win, sending the visiting Hutchinson fan section into a frenzy.

For Hutchinson, it was more than just a win — it was a statement. The Salthawks had proven they could compete with the best. In a season filled with near misses, they showed the heart and determination to fight through any challenge.

That victory over the state’s No. 1 team gave the Salthawks a massive boost in confidence and solidified their place as a team that could never be counted out. With the wind at their backs, Hutchinson entered its sub-state game against Hays with momentum — and while the season ended there, the team's resilience was something its fans would never forget.

As the Salthawks look ahead, they will have to say goodbye to key players who left a lasting impact on the program. Point guard Terrell King, in particular, will be greatly missed. His leadership on the court was invaluable, running the offense with poise and keeping the Salthawks competitive in every game. Alongside him, senior starters Taishaun Govain and Levi Kepler played critical roles, each bringing unique skills and experience. Their contributions, both on and off the court, will be hard to replace.

However, the future looks bright. Sophomore Lamar Govain stepped up in a big way this season, seamlessly taking over a starting role and proving he is more than capable of leading the team moving forward. Along with Danny Boone, who was a consistent force off the bench, sharpshooter Jalen Crable and Tramel Walker, who provided energy and hustle, Hutchinson has a solid foundation to build on.

Head coach Bryan Miller, now in his fifth year, will look to reload and rebuild next season. His experience and leadership have been crucial to the program's development, and with emerging young talent, Miller is confident the Salthawks will remain competitive. While losing several key seniors will create some gaps, the foundation of strong returning players and the promise of future talent should keep Hutchinson in the mix.

Though the 2024-25 season is over, Hutchinson basketball is in good hands. The Salthawks will aim to build on the momentum they’ve created and push for even greater success in the coming years.

In a season filled with near misses, they showed the heart and determination to fight through any challenge.That victory over the state’s No. 1 team gave the Salthawks a massive boost in confidence and solidified their place as a team that could never be counted out. With the wind at their backs, Hutchinson entered its sub-state game against Hays with momentum — and while the season ended there, the team's resilience was something its fans would never forget.As the Salthawks look ahead, they will have to say goodbye to key players who left a lasting impact on the program. Point guard Terrell King, in particular, will be greatly missed. His leadership on the court was invaluable, running the offense with poise and keeping the Salthawks competitive in every game. Alongside him, senior starters Taishaun Govain and Levi Kepler played critical roles, each bringing unique skills and experience. Their contributions, both on and off the court, will be hard to replace.However, the future looks bright. Sophomore Lamar Govain stepped up in a big way this season, seamlessly taking over a starting role and proving he is more than capable of leading the team moving forward. Along with Danny Boone, who was a consistent force off the bench, sharpshooter Jalen Crable and Tramel Walker, who provided energy and hustle, Hutchinson has a solid foundation to build on.Head coach Bryan Miller, now in his fifth year, will look to reload and rebuild next season. His experience and leadership have been crucial to the program's development, and with emerging young talent, Miller is confident the Salthawks will remain competitive. While losing several key seniors will create some gaps, the foundation of strong returning players and the promise of future talent should keep Hutchinson in the mix.Though the 2024-25 season is over, Hutchinson basketball is in good hands. The Salthawks will aim to build on the momentum they’ve created and push for even greater success in the coming years.

On Thursday evening, the Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce held their Fourth Annual Awards Night at The Burt.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eagle Media’s own Glen Grunwald was the master of ceremonies for the evening.&nbsp; The annual awards ceremony gives the Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce the opportunity to celebrate the businesses and business leaders in Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Starting off the evening was the Veteran-Owned/Supporting Business Award sponsored by ONEOK.&nbsp; The award was won by Heartland Retirement &amp; Benefits Consulting which is owned by Lori Miller.&nbsp;

Miller’s commitment to service began long before she entered the business world. She proudly served in the United States Army as a Medical Supply Specialist with the 388th Medical Battalion, playing a vital role in military medical logistics, including the setup of Madigan Army Medical Center. Though she left the Army in 1997 to focus on raising her family, her dedication to service has never waveredNominee

This award recognizes a minority or women-owned small business that has outstanding achievement and has made significant contributions to the local community. The next award is the Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year sponsored by ONEOK.&nbsp; Ambassadors are asked to strive for 35 to 50-percent participation. One person continues to blow that goal out of the water. With an amazing 92-percent participation in 2024. The Ambassador of the Year was Rachelle Fideldy, who is a three-peat winner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Legacy Business of the Year was the next award.&nbsp; The Legacy Award was sponsored by First National Bank and recognizes an individual or business in our community that has made a decades long contribution to Reno County. Hutch Chamber holds 2025 Awards Night 

Hutchinson, KAN. –&nbsp;Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Devon Malechi Stutesman, 24, died Monday, March 3. Stutesman was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. He was transported to a local hospital where he died Monday afternoon. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Stutesman was serving a 122-month sentence for convictions of possession and distribution of heroin and attempt to traffic firearms into a correctional facility in Lyon County, Kansas.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Mary “Kay” Bottomley, 71, of Hutchinson, died March 4, 2025, at Hutchison Regional Medical Center. She was born December 23, 1953, in Hutchinson to Wilbur and Pauline (Leeper) Stotts. 

Kay attended Buhler High School and Hutchinson High School. She worked in advertising for The Bee, KSKU, and the Hutchinson News. 

On June 16, 1995, she married David Bottomley in Hutchinson. They shared 25 years of marriage before his death on July 17, 2020. 

Kay is survived by: daughter, Tish Weilert (Cole Allaman); son, Jason Weilert (Nicole); grandchildren, Bailee Weilert (Dustin Rock), Lily Adam (Trevor), Lawson Weilert-Beymer (Emma), Paxton Weilert-Allaman, Tipton Weilert-Allaman; great-grandchildren, Everett Weilert-Beymer, Eila Weilert-Beymer, Jaxton Cooper; brothers, Bob Stotts and Larry Stotts.

She was preceded in death by: parents; father of her children, Ron Weilert; spouse from second marriage, David Brown; husband, David Bottomley; and brother, Tracey Stotts. 

Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary followed by graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with Deacon Todd Ray officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Friends may sign her memorial book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 17th and North Plum.

In 1913, the Charles Summers family moved from Southwest Kansas to Hutchinson to take advantage of the major railroad intersections and start constructing "all concrete" terminal grain elevators.

In 1918, the Security Elevator Company was born and they started executing their plan at Avenue C and Lorraine.

After much success, they found themselves with an abundance of bulk gasoline and built two filling stations about 1932. The first photo shows one of those stations at 1628 N. Plum looking southeast. It was there from 1933 to 1942. <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/c67b538b-2c8d-4940-bbe7-798486dda02f">Note the old Bresee College building in the background.</a>

The second photo shows the same station looking northeast around Christmastime.

It became the Universal Service Station from 1947 to 1952.

It then became Ernie's Service Station from 1953 to 1958.

It then became Potter's Service Station from 1959 to 1978.

For those who remember Potter's being across the street, that happened in 1979.

The QuikTrip then built a new building in 1982 and the address was changed to 501 E. 17th.

Then it became Kwik Shop in 1984. The third photo shows Kwik Shop in 1987.

 </figure>It became the Universal Service Station from 1947 to 1952.It then became Ernie's Service Station from 1953 to 1958.It then became Potter's Service Station from 1959 to 1978.For those who remember Potter's being across the street, that happened in 1979.The QuikTrip then built a new building in 1982 and the address was changed to 501 E. 17th.Then it became Kwik Shop in 1984. The third photo shows Kwik Shop in 1987.<figure>

 </figure>After Kwik Shop moved across the street to the northwest corner, the property became Papa Johns Pizza in 2006. The fourth photo shows the 501 E. 17th property today, still Papa Johns Pizza. The building is owned by Pryor Real Estate Development L.L.C. of Hutchinson.<figure>
