Hutchinson Community College&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Community College Fine Arts department, with support from the Kansas Creative Arts Commission, will kick off its spring schedule with the annual Bryce Luty Jazz Festival concert on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 PM in the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

Celebrating its fiftieth year, the festival was named for long-time Hutch Community College jazz instructor Bryce Luty following his passing in 2014. The concert will include performances by the Hutchinson Community College Concert Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Jack Cassidy, and the Bryce Luty Jazz Festival All Star Band.

In addition, the performance will feature guest artist Jim Pugh. Mr. Pugh is currently a Professor of Jazz Trombone at the University of Illinois and a member of the Grammy Award winning band Steely Dan. In addition, he was a soloist with Woody Herman Thundering Herd and has performed with Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and Madonna, among many others.

The two-day Festival begins Thursday, Feb. 6 and is geared for high school and middle school students. Each participating band will receive a clinic from guest artist Jim Pugh or one of two guest clinicians – Dr. Emma Taylor, who is currently the Professor of Jazz Bass at Millikin University and has performed with famed drummer Carl Allen from Kansas City and famed saxophonist Jim Snidero, or Dr. Kurt Reeder, Professor of Jazz Piano at the University of Utah who has performed with Alex Acuna and Poncho Sanchez.

Tickets for the concert are just $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for senior citizens, $5.00 for high school students and children, with Hutchinson Community College students/faculty/staff admitted free with a valid college ID. Tickets are available by calling the Fine Arts ticket office at 620-665-3503. Advance purchase of tickets is recommended.

HutchCC to hold 50th Bryce Luty Jazz Festival Concert

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools held a National Signing Day ceremony inside the Salthawk Activity Center on Wednesday morning for student-athletes that will be moving on to a two-year or four-year institution.&nbsp;

Eight current Salthawks signed their national letter of intents in front of a large crowd in the SAC. Each student-athlete had a table to decorate with their future schools' apparel.

The eight signees that were a part of the signing day activity are listed below.

The No. 6-ranked Blue Dragons (21-1, 15-1 KJCCC) travel to play No. 22 Coffeyville (17-3, 12-3) - winner of seven-straight games - at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons enter play Wednesday tied with No. 5 Dodge City for first place in the Jayhawk Conference at 15-1 record. The Red Ravens are firmly in third place in the KJCCC at 12-3, 2 1/2 games behind both the Blue Dragons and Conquistadors.
Hutchinson plays its third nationally ranked opponent this season. The Dragons lost to then No. 3 Dodge City on January 18 and defeated now-No. 20 Murray State on November 9. The Blue Dragons defeated Butler on January 8. The Grizzlies are receiving votes in this week's rankings.
The Blue Dragons ran their win streak to four games with a 90-49 win over Independence on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/katcher_brynne_qgrf">Brynne Katcher</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/norris_kahlen_2uos">Kahlen Norris</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high 18 points to pace the Blue Dragons, who have averaged 87.8 points offensively and have allowed 47.8 points defensively.
The Red Ravens ran their season-long win streak to seven games one week ago after an 86-43 win over Independence. Over their win streak, the Ravens have averaged 73.3 points offensively and 53.0 points defensively.
Hutchinson earned a 66-53 victory over Coffeyville in the teams' first meeting on December 4 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons held the Red Ravens to a season-low 26.3 percent shooting, while Hutchinson drilled a season-high 15 3-point goals on 32 attempts. Four Blue Dragons scored in double figures led by Norris with 13 points. Karliey Parker had 12 points to lead Coffeyville.</div>

The Blue Dragons are 2-1 against Top 10 opponents this season. Hutchinson dropped a 94-89 overtime contest to then-No. 1 Barton on November 20 in Great Bend. Then to start the second semester, the Blue Dragons had back-to-back games against No. 6 Cowley and No. 5 Butler. The Blue Dragons defeated the Tigers 70-62 on January 4 and stunned the Grizzlies 73-70 on January 8.
Hutchinson heads into Wednesday's contest after dropping 3 of its last 4 games. The Blue Dragons allowed season highs for points allowed an opponent shooting percentage as Independence's No. 1-KJCCC offense rolled to a 104-85 victory. The Pirates shot 58.5 percent with 11 3-pointers. Chianti Tramble had 41 points against the Blue Dragons, which is an individual opponent high.
Coffeyville has reeled off three-straight wins and seven victories in its last eight games. The Red Ravens had their second league bye on Saturday. One week ago, the Red Ravens trailed Independence 54-48 early in the second half and went on a 55-20 tear over the final 16 minutes for a 103-74 victory over the Pirates.
The Blue Dragons dropped the first meeting of the season with Coffeyville, falling 81-77 on December 5 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons led 30-26 at halftime, but were outscored 56-47 in the second half as Coffeyville shot 56.8 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/arnold_khalil_9vae">Khalil Arnold</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to lead the Dragons with 17 points. Brian Griffith had 19 to lead the Ravens.
Wednesday's meeting will be the 61st all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Coffeyville in a series that dates back to 1929. The Blue Dragons lead 33-27.</div>

🏀 HutchCC men travel to No. 10 Coffeyville

Hutchinson Community College sophomore track and field athlete&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/thid_david_57oh">David Thid</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Men's Track and Field Runner of the Week on Tuesday after an impressive performance at the Washburn Open on Saturday.

The sophomore from Ronninge, Sweden broke a school record and qualified for the NJCAA national championships in two events on Saturday.

Thid broke the oldest record remaining on the Blue Dragon indoor track record books, breaking a 38-year record in the men's 400 meters to win the Washburn Open with a national qualifying time of 47.16 seconds. Thid's time in the 400 meters is currently the fifth-fastest in the NJCAA this season and fastest non-altitude converted time.

Thid also ran the anchor leg of the Blue Dragons' fourth-place 4x400 relay team that qualified for nationals with the second-fastest Blue Dragon time in team history of 3:14.89. That is the eighth-fastest time in the nation for the 4x400 relay this season.

This is Thid's fourth career KJCCC Runner of the Week award. He won three conference awards as a freshman.

Vicki Marie Wineland, 81, died peacefully in her sleep February 2, 2025, at her home. She was born April 2, 1943, in Osborne County, Kansas, to Vinton and Dulcie (Smith) Lane.

Vicki graduated from Osborne High School in 1961 and Sidney’s Hairdressing College in 1962. A dedicated and talented hairstylist, she opened Vic’s Beauty Shop, where she cared for her clients with skill and kindness for over 50 years. Vicki found joy in gardening and took great pride in decorating for special occasions at church. She was a devoted leader in Reno County 4-H, Sandhill Saddle Club, 10th Avenue United Methodist Church, and Union Valley Bible Church. Above all, she cherished time spent with family and friends and lived each day with unwavering faith, love, and dedication.

On August 12, 1962, Vicki married Edward “Ed” W. Wineland, in Osborne. They shared over 62 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: her daughter, Shelli Wineland (Doug Dalton) of Cincinnati, OH; grandson, William Wineland Dalton, of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughter, Barbara Bentley Dalton, of Cincinnati, OH; sisters, Sherrie Bohlen of Hutchinson; Janet Flegg of Wichita; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Candace Wineland; brothers-in-law, Dean Bohlen and Peter Flegg.

Memorial
service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2024, at Union
Valley Bible Church, 1916 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson. The service will

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/thid_david_57oh">David Thid</a>&nbsp;became the new Blue Dragon 400-meter record holder and a bit later in the day, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/legrand_leo_gfpl">Leo LeGrand</a>&nbsp;claimed Hutchinson's 800-meter record at the Washburn Open at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility in Topeka.
Thid and LeGrand were part of six new national qualifiers for the Blue Dragon men over the weekend.
Thid won the Washburn Open 400 meters with a national qualifying and Blue Dragon record time of 47.16 seconds. This is Thid's second individual school record of his career. He broke the outdoor 400-meter intermediate hurdle record last spring when he won the NJCAA National Championship in the event.
Thid eclipsed the oldest Blue Dragon men's indoor record still standing. The Blue Dragon sophomore broke the 38-yard mark of Terry Sullivan, who ran 48.20 to set the record in 1987.
LeGrand finished eighth in the 800 meters, posting a school-record time of 1:53.06. That national qualifying mark broke the 202 record of 1:53.92 set by multi-time All-American Andrew Kibet.
LeGrand is now qualified in two events, notching a spot in the 1,000 meters last week at the NAIA/JUCO Challenge in Pittsburg.
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/mangelson_farrin_7y5g">Farrin Mangelson</a>&nbsp;started the record-breaking weekend off on Friday breaking the indoor 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.35.
A fourth school record was .83 seconds from going down as the Blue Dragon men's 4x400 relay team qualified for nationals with a fourth-place time of 3:14.89. The relay team of&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/lester_da-shawn_ptrw">Da'Shawn Lester</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/telemaque_rickyle_kzmg">Rickyle Telemaque</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/warren_d-antonio_9loc">D'Antonio Warren</a>&nbsp;and Thid posted the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.
Through three weekend of the indoor season, the Blue Dragon men's track and field team have 11 total national indoor qualifiers.
Part of the Blue Dragon squad also competed at the Coach Wilson Invitational at the Heskett Center in Wichita on Saturday.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/parkinson_malique_53uy">Malique Parkinson</a>&nbsp;won the triple jump with a mark of 46-2 1/4 (14.04 meters).
Freshman Giovanni Jones was fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.01 seconds.
Freshman Lushane Blake was seventh in the 600 meters with a time of 1:28.69.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/martinez_gregory_ohfu">Gregory Martinez</a>&nbsp;placed seventh in the pole vault with a height f 13-10 1/4 (4.22 meters).
The Blue Dragons are scheduled to be off next weekend and will next compete at the Ichabod Invitational on February 14-15 in Topeka.</div>

ALTUS, Oklahoma &ndash; Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/tomlinson_morgan_0v0v">Morgan Tomlinson</a>&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/thomas_aubree_o0p2">Aubree Thomas</a>&nbsp;has strong performances in the circle as the No. 22-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team earned their sixth-straight Opening Day sweep on Saturday.
Tomlinson tossed a complete game in Hutchinson's 6-3 season-opening win over Western Oklahoma State. Thomas followed with six shutout innings as the Blue Dragons completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Pioneers.
The Blue Dragons (2-0) have had next weekend's schedule altered and will not open at home. Instead, Hutchinson will travel to Chanute for a neutral-site doubleheader on Saturday, February 8 against Iowa Western at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. The Dragons are now scheduled to open at Fun Valley on Thursday, February 13 against Crowder College.
GAME 1 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 6, Western Oklahoma State 3 Tomlinson (1-0) had her third career complete game scattering nine hits over seven innings.
The sophomore right-hander struck out three and walked one, using 105 total pitches.
Tomlinson's biggest jam to work through came in the third. With two runs already in, the Pioneers had runners at first and third with one out. Tomlinson got a key strikeout and a flyout to right fielder&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/stauffer_gabby_t8qf">Gabby Stauffer</a>&nbsp;to end the inning. Tomlinson stranded seven runners on base, four in scoring position.

GAME 2 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 4, Western Oklahoma State 1 Thomas (1-0) scattered four hits over six shutout innings for her first career victory. She didn't face more than one baserunner in any single innings on Saturday. Only one Pioneer runner advance to third base against her.
Thomas struck out three and walked run in her 95-pitcher performance. She faced no more than four batters in any one inning.
The closest the Pioneers came to scoring came in the third. With a runner at second, Stauffer got the Dragons out of the inning unscathed as she ran down a line drive down the right-field line for the final out of the inning.

Sophomore distance runners Laura Avila and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/picolet_jordan_z3sx">Jordyn Picolet</a>&nbsp;became the latest NJCAA national indoor qualifiers for the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team on Saturday at the Washburn Open.
Avila posted the second-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history on Saturday, finishing 28th at Washburn in a national-qualifying time of 18:35.89.
Picolet placed 30th in the 5,000 meters with a time personal-best time of 18:44.70, which ranked No. 4 in Blue Dragon women's indoor track history.
Avila and Picolet now join pole vaulter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/mccoy_alycea_lrv1">Alycea McCoy</a>&nbsp;and shot putters Deishaline Mayer Scott and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/montaque_janiel_88cd">Janiel Montaque</a>&nbsp;as Blue Dragon qualifiers for the 2025 NJCAA Indoor Championships in March in Lubbock, Texas.

At the Heskett Center in Wichita, Montaque won the shot put to lead a Blue Dragon 1-3-7 finish in the event. Montaque posted a PR in the event with a distance of 42-10 1/4 (11.01 meters), which ranks eighth-best in Blue Dragon indoor history.
Scott placed third with a distance of 42-5 (12.93 meters) and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/green_aiyanna_nkel">Aiyanna Green</a>&nbsp;had a PR with a seventh-place effort of 41-1 (12.52 meters)

With three players scoring in double figures and a balanced offensive attack that had eight players scoring six or more points, the No. 6 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team rolled to its fourth-consecutive victory on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Shooting 48.0 percent and with 23 assists on 36 made field goals, the Blue Dragons cruised by Independence 90-49 to complete a season sweep of the Pirates.

The Blue Dragons (21-1, 15-1) hit the road Wednesday to face a key KJCCC matchup against No. 22 Coffeyville at 5:30 p.m. at Nellis Hall. Independence fell to 2-19 overall and 1-14 in league play.

The Blue Dragons captured their 28th-consecutive victory at the Sports Arena, which is the third-longest home-court win streak in program history.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/katcher_brynne_qgrf">Brynne Katcher</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points to lead the Blue Dragons. 🏀 Blue Dragons cruise past Pirates

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/cannon_bobby_1l4l">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high 30 points, but the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team couldn't slow down the high-scoring Independence Pirates on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Independence's Chianti Tramble scored a game-high 41 points as the Pirates defeated the Blue Dragons 104-85 in a KJCCC matchup.

Cannon became the first Blue Dragon since Jayden Garrison (32 points at Garden City on January 14, 2023) to score 30 points in a single game. The freshman was 14 of 20 from the field and 2 of 2 from the free-throw line. Cannon just missed a double-double with eight rebounds and he had a blocked shot.

Independence's Tramble is the second opponent to score at least 40 points against the Dragons this season. His 41 points consisted of 13 of 23 overall shooting, going 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 11 of 12 from the foul line. Tramble added five assists and four rebounds.

After trailing by as many as nine points early in the first half, the Blue Dragons battled back and took a 37-36 lead on a Cannon 12-foot jumper with 3:22 left in the half. The Pirates outscored the Blue Dragons 11-5 over the remainder of the half and led 47-43 at halftime.

Independence built a double-figure lead of 58-47 after a Chris Dockery layup with 17:54 to play in the second half. The Dragons weren't able to get the game back to single figures again.

Four Blue Dragons scored in double figures against the Pirates.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/arnold_khalil_9vae">Khalil Arnold</a>&nbsp;scored 16 points off the bench. Independence, the No. 1 scoring team in the KJCCC at 92.1 points per game, shot an opponent season-high 58.5 percent (38 of 65) for the game. The Pirates were 11 of 26 from 3-point range and 17 of 24 from the free-throw line. They had 23 assists and 14 turnovers.

Jahmari Hamilton-Brown came off the bench to score 16 points. Cedric Dixon had 12 points and Dockery added 11 points.

Independence came out hot in building a 12-6 lead just 5:19 into the contest. The Dragons rallied, getting a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/smith_kobe_85qc">Kobe Smith</a>&nbsp;3-pointer to pull within 12-11 with 13:35 left. Arnold hit a long 2-pointer to pull the Dragons within 14-13 with 13:05 to play in the half.

The Pirates build a 34-25 lead with 7:01 remaining, but the Dragons went on a 10-0 run, tying and taking a 35-35 lead after two D.J. Dudley free throws with 3:56 to play. Then Cannon scored with 3:22 remaining in the half for a 37-36 Hutchinson lead.

Independence went on an 11-4 lead to build a 47-41 lead after a Tramble three-point play with 34 seconds left. The Dragons made the halftime deficit 47-43 when Arnold hit a turnaround jumper with 16 seconds left in the half.

The Pirates took full control of the game with a 21-9 run over the first 4:24 of the second half, building a 68-50 lead after a Hamilton-Brown field goal with 15:36 remaining.

The Blue Dragons started chipping away and pulled within 10 points at 77-67 after an&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/jackson_isaiah_jg1r">Isaiah Jackson</a>&nbsp;three-point play with 5:10 left. Over its three-game winning streak, Hutchinson has been a much-more efficient offense. Over that span of games, the Blue Dragons are averaging 85.0 points per game, while shooting 48.0 percent overall and a white-hot 41.3 percent from 3-point range. Averaging almost 15 turnovers per game this season, the Dragons have had only 8.6 turnovers in the last three games.
Hutchinson continues to set the defensive pace in the KJCCC giving up a league-low 48.9 points per game. Over their three-game win streak, the Dragons are allowing 47.3 points with opponents shooting 33.0 percent and 20.0 turnovers per game.
The Blue Dragons hit 10 3-pointers and shot 53.6 percent overall in an 84-57 road victory on Wednesday at Colby.&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/jackson_hailey_q6t6">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;had her ninth double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/pleasant_jada_y7vs">Jada Pleasant</a>&nbsp;sank a career-best five 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 15 points to lead the Blue Dragons over the Trojans.
Independence dropped an 85-43 decision to Coffeyville at home on Wednesday night at the ICC Fieldhouse. Allison Reese had 11 points to lead the Pirates, who shot only 24.5 percent and turned the ball over 24 times.
Back on November 30, the Blue Dragons dominated the Pirates in a 66-34 victory at the ICC Fieldhouse, the sixth-straight Hutchinson victory in the series. Jackson had 12 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/duncan_katie_ofa1">Katie Duncan</a>&nbsp;had 11 points to pace Hutchinson. The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team has a tough defensive assignment on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Dragons entertain the Independence Pirates in the second meeting of the season.
The Blue Dragons (14-7, 10-5 KJCCC) and Pirates (10-10, 6-8 KJCCC) will tip off at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/mangelson_farrin_7y5g">Farrin Mangelson</a>&nbsp;shattered the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field indoor 5,000-meter record on Friday at the Washburn Open in Topeka.
Mangelson and three other Blue Dragon distance runners posted 4 of the top 6 indoor 5,000-meter times in program history.

Mangelson finished seventh at the Washburn Open with a school-record and NJCAA-qualifying time of 14:35.35. That time is the sixth-fastest time in the NJCAA this season. Mangelson smashed the old record of Tegan Flanagan by 13.33 seconds. Flanagan ran a time of 14:48.68 at the 2021 NJCAA Indoor Championships in Pittsburg.
Also beating Flanagan's old record was sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kiprotich_titus_hgfs">Titus Kiprotich</a>, who qualified for the 2025 indoor national championships in March with the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon history of 14:37.76. Kiprotich's time is seventh in the NJCAA this season.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kogo_cornelius_hf87">Cornelius Kogo</a>&nbsp;was the third Blue Dragon to qualify in the 5,000 meters on Friday, posting a time of 14:49.92, which is the fourth-fastest Blue Dragon 5,000-meter time and 12th fastest in the NJCAA This season.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/rotich_thaddaeus_ec60">Thaddaeus Rotich</a>&nbsp;ran the sixth-fastest Blue Dragon 5,000-meter time, placing 23rd on Friday with a time of 15:05.73.
The Blue Dragons had one other national qualifier on Friday. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/makalo_kebba_vl76">Kebba Makalo</a>&nbsp;qualified for nationals in the 60 meters with a time of 6.82 seconds. Makalo just missed qualifying in the 200 meters by .04 seconds with a time of 21.64 seconds.

Dawes was the women's long jump runner-up on Friday posting a season's best jump of 17 feet, 7 inches (14.72 meters).

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/moreno_yaya_hvj4">Yaya Moreno</a>&nbsp;finished fifth in the long jump with a career-best jump of 16-8 3/4 (5.10 meters).
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/montaque_janiel_88cd">Janiel Montaque</a>&nbsp;posted a PR in the weight throw with an eighth-place distance of 46-4 (14.12 meters).
The Blue Dragons will be split at two meets on Saturday, competing at the Coach Wilson Invitational and the Washburn Open in Topeka.</div>

👟 Dawes, Green lead Dragons at WSU

Brenda Dee Wilson, 77, died January 29, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born January 30, 1947, in Aurora, IL, to David H. and Patricia (Koralek) Richardson.

Dee graduated from Nickerson High School in 1965 and Sidney’s Hairdressing College. She worked as a cosmetologist in addition to driving a school bus for Nickerson USD 309 for 10 years. Dee also worked as a secretary in the Community Corrections office in Hutchinson for many years until she retired.

Dee loved her family first and foremost, most importantly her grandchildren. She also loved to read, her flower garden (especially irises), and baking. Dee was also very community minded and volunteered at Christian Soup Ministry, Hospice House, Meals on Wheels, and the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center. She also served on the boards of the NAACP and the Emancipation Day committee.

On December 27, 1965, Dee married Larry V. Wilson in Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church. He survives.

Also surviving are: her children, Christine Wilson of Hutchinson, Patrick Wilson (Rosann) of Hutchinson, Sarah Wilson of Wichita; grandchildren, Matthew Palacios of Wichita, Chase Palacios (Emily) of Hutchinson, Laryssa Stahl (Nate) of Hutchinson, Remington Wilson and Josphine Wilson of Hutchinson; niece, Kelly Richardson-McEntire (James) of Lee’s Summit, MO; and sister-of-the-heart, Sally Wydick (David) of Nevada, MO.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, J. D. Richardson and his wife Linda; and nephew, Jon Richardson.

Celebration of Life will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Larry and Dee’s home, 3810 N. Wilson Rd., Hutchinson. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, at Elliott Mortuary. Cremation has taken place.

COLBY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team ended its brief two-game skid with a 65-63 win inside the Colby Event Center on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons are now 14-7 overall, 10-5 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson also completes the regular season sweep of Colby.&nbsp;

The game saw several ties and lead changes, with neither team able to have larger than a five-point lead throughout the night.&nbsp;

D.J. Dudley hit the go-ahead 3-pointer to put the Blue Dragons in front 65-63 with 33 seconds to play. He finished with 13 points. Dudley knocked down the game winning three-point play in the Sports Arena to down Colby back in November.&nbsp;

After the shot by Dudley, the Blue Dragon defense forced a shot clock violation with just over three seconds to play. Colby had only committed four team fouls, which came back to hurt them in the final seconds.&nbsp;

Mikhail Abdul-Hamid finished with 20 points to lead the Blue Dragons, knocking down five 3-pointers. Isaiah Jackson was the only other Blue Dragons in double figures with 10.&nbsp;

Colby was led by Eternity Eguagie with 13 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;

The win came in John Ontjes’ 600th career game as the head coach of the Blue Dragons. He is now 503-97.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons set the tone early, building a 22-9 lead after the opening quarter, and a 43-27 halftime lead.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson offense hit 10 3-pointers in the win, the third straight game the Blue Dragons have knocked down 10 or more.&nbsp;

Jada Pleasant was unconscious from deep, knocking down all five 3-point attempts. She finished with 15 points, a new career-high.&nbsp;

Hailey Jackson secured her ninth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;

Katie Duncan chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Brynne Katcher had 10.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons finished 30 of 55 from the floor for 54%, 10 of 18 from deep and 14 of 16 at the foul line.&nbsp;

Colby (12-9, 7-8) was held to 36% shooting on 17 of 47. The Trojans went to the free throw line 30 times, converting on 22 attempts. Dessirae Ulmer had 22 points off the bench to lead Colby.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons will return to the Sports Arena on Saturday to host the Independence Pirates. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.

🏀 Pleasant leads Blue Dragons to road win

After a life well lived, Arvilla M. “Arvy” Sampson, 96, formerly of Hutchinson, died on January 26, 2025, in Lawrence. She was born July 7, 1928, in Manhattan, Kansas.

Arvy enjoyed a childhood full of adventure and fun in Manhattan, Kansas, where her father was a professor at Kansas State University. She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1946, then received her bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Kansas State University in 1950. At K-State, Arvy was very active in a number of clubs and honor societies. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, selected by the Mortar Board National College Honor Society, and named in Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges, among others.

It was at K-State that Arvy met Jack Sampson, her husband of 73 years, at a college dance. The two fell in love and married May 28, 1950, the day they graduated from college. Jack’s career in broadcasting took their family to Hays, Kansas; Kansas City; Oklahoma City; St. Louis; then Hutchinson, when they purchased KSKU-FM and The Bee. Arvy was co-owner of Sampson Communications, which included three radio stations, a printing business and a shopper newspaper.

Arvy spent her life pursuing her many passions, chief among them her family. She volunteered expensively in her community and church, focusing on supporting under-resourced families and children. &nbsp;At Northminster Presbyterian Church, then later New Covenant Presbyterian Church, she held several leadership roles, including deacon and head of missions. Her work to support people in need also extended beyond her community. She and Jack traveled the United States doing builds for Habitat for Humanity. In Hutchinson, she was a member of P.E.O. Chapter BY.&nbsp;

Arvy loved to travel, garden, read, do arts and crafts, spend time in nature and be with friends and family.

All who knew Arvy were warmed by her kindness, generosity, wisdom, joy and optimism.&nbsp;

Arvy is survived by her children, Cristy Bilhorn (John) of St. Louis, MO, Jack Richard “Rick” Sampson (Rita) of Phoenix, AZ, Teri Heft (Gordon) of Kansas City, MO, and Melissa “Micki” Chestnut (Rob) of Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sampson, parents George Edwin and Pearl America (Moore) Johnson and her brother, Romaine Johnson.

Arvy’s Celebration of Life service at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, will be announced at a later date. &nbsp;Private inurnment will take place in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College sophomore point guard Landon Forbes became the second Blue Dragon this season win the KJCCC Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award.

Forbes had her best week as a Blue Dragon in leading No. 5 Hutchinson to a pair of wins last week.

For the week, Forbes averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 assists per game in wins over Barton and Fort Hays Tech Northwest. She sizzled from 3-point range hitting 12 of 19 shots from distance.

Against Barton, Forbes scored a career-high 21 points, hitting seven 3-pointers. That was only the 14th time in Blue Dragon history a player had at least seven 3-pointers in a game.

Against, Tech, Forbes had 15 points on 5 of 6 3-point shooting.

Forbes joins Hailey Jackson as Blue Dragons to earn conference weekly honors this season. Jackson has won the award twice.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A data walk through food insecurity in Reno County is being sponsored by the Reno County Community Wellness Coalition and Passageways to a Healthy Kansas.

The event is being held at the Gallery Theater at the Springer Fine Arts Center at Hutchinson Community College on Thursday Jan. 30.&nbsp; There are two sessions to the event, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It will have interactive displays that will share the stories and statistics behind food access challenges here in Reno County.&nbsp;

Using visuals and dialogue, a data walk is a powerful way to engage with real issues and help to create real solutions.

The public is invited to come and learn and share your thoughts to take action to build a healthier Reno County for all.

Ontjes has won 502 games in his first 599 with the Dragons, which is second all-time in the KJCCC. Colby coach Darin Spence has 359 KJCCC wins, which is eighth most.
Since a 26-point loss to Dodge City on January 18, the Blue Dragons have regained their offensive stride after scoring only 41 points to the Conquistadors. In victories over Barton and Fort Hays Tech Northwest, the Blue Dragons are averaging 88.5 points per game, while shooting 45.8 percent overall and 37.5 percent from 3-point range. The Blue Dragons have hit 21 of their last 56 3-point attempts in the last two games.
Against Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Saturday at the Sports Arena, the Dragons posted the fourth-highest point total team history with the sixth-largest margin of victory in a 114-39 victory. All 11 Hutchinson players to suit up scored and six reached double figures as the Dragons shot 53.8 percent with 11 3-pointers and a season-low-tying six turnovers.
Under second-year head coach Darin Spence, Colby has already made a four-win improvement from last season. The Trojans are tied for seventh place in the KJCCC with Cloud County at 7-7. Colby fell to Coffeyville on Saturday 69-57. Former Blue Dragon Ishante Suttington had 28 points to lead the Trojans.

After two tough home losses last week, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team is on the road Wednesday in order to regain some much-needed momentum as it heads into the final third of the 2024-25 season.
The Blue Dragons (13-7, 9-5 KJCCC) travel to Northwest Kansas to meet the Colby Trojans (11-9, 6-8 KJCCC) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Colby Events Center.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and&nbsp;Steve Carpenter (analyst) calling the action. The game will be streamed live and free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Facing a two-game skid after home losses to Barton and Fort Hays Tech Northwest, the Blue Dragons are currently in fifth place in the 13-team Jayhawk Conference with a 9-5 record. The Dragons trail fourth-place Barton by one game and third-place Butler by 1.5 games.
The Blue Dragons play the two teams immediately behind them in the KJCCC standings this week. Colby is in seventh place three games behind the Blue Dragons. Independence, Saturday's Hutchinson opponent at the Sports Arena, is in sixth place 2.5 games behind the Dragons.
Both Hutchinson and Colby enter play on Wednesday on two-game losing streaks.
The Blue Dragons fell 91-86 to Barton last Wednesday before Fort Hays Tech Northwest dominated the final six minutes on Saturday in a 75-61 Blue Dragon loss, the first loss by Hutchinson of 10 or more points this season. Colby lost to Independence 104-86 and Coffeyville 83-65. The Trojans have dropped 3 of their last 4 games.
Hutchinson won a tight first meeting with Colby on November 26 at the Sports Arena.
D.J. Dudley topped off a career night with a game-winning three-point play with 2.3 seconds to play in regulation to complete a wild late-game comeback for an 81-80 win. Trailing by seven points with 2:36 remaining in the second half.
Trailing 77-72 with 23 seconds left,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/thornton_jaquez_fh4s">Jaquez Thornton</a>&nbsp;hit a long 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to pull the Dragons within 77-75. Khadir Muhammad hit two free throws for Colby with 14 seconds left for a four-point lead, but Thornton bombed away from deep again, hitting a 3-pointer with 8.5 seconds left to draw the Dragons within 79-78. The Dragons fouled Muhammad immediately and he hit 1 of 2 free throws with 7.4 seconds remaining. That set up Dudley's game-winning heroics.</div>

🏀 Blue Dragons travel to face Trojans Wednesday

Diana Lynn Twineham, 63, of Hutchinson, died January 24, 2025, at Hospice House. She was born January 12, 1962, in Stafford, to Billy Gene and Lenore Ann (Flandermeyer) Waters.

Diana graduated from Buhler High School in 1980 and attended Hutchinson Community College. She worked as office manager for KanOx (Airgas) for many years, secretary at Peel Center - HCC, and caregiver at Home Instead and TECH. Diana loved horses and was a barrel racing champion in her younger years. She also enjoyed volunteering at Reins of Hope and working in her flower garden. Diana was of the Southern Baptist faith.

On August 17, 1984, she married Steve Twineham, in Hutchinson. They shared over 40 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: her daughter, Nikki Delay and husband Jesse of Wichita; sister, Kathleen Hysom and husband Roger of Nisswa, MN; brother, Steven Waters and wife Sheri of Hutchinson; niece, Ashley Petrovic and husband Alex of Racine, WI; nephews, Jacob Waters of Lawrence, Colton Waters and wife Savannah of Wichita, Hunter Waters and wife Kaylee of Wichita; great-nephew, Eli Waters; great-nieces, Emersyn Waters, Lilee Kilgore; and her beloved dog, Moose.

Diana was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Buhler East Cemetery.

Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at Elliott Mortuary.
