NJCAA D1 Men’s Basketball Tournament Scoreboard

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two years ago Ranger Junior College made a run through the NJCAA National Tournament by coming up with big win after big win.&nbsp;

Although the Rangers are under a different coach in Larry Brown, this years team is doing it again. Keisei Tominaga's 25 points including several late three point baskets propelled the Rangers to a stunning 87-83 overtime win over South Plains.

It was one of the best games of the tournament with neither team leading by more than eight points throughout the contest. The game was tied 11 times and the lead changed hands nine times. Jorell Saterfield had another solid game for Ranger with 19 points. Ranger moves onto the semifinals where they take on Cowley College.

South Plains, which was the number one team in the nation most of the season, ends the year with a quarterfinal round loss and a record of 18-4. The Texans were led by Rivaldo Soares with 25 points and Philmon Gebrewhit with 17.

Ranger continues 2021 run with overtime win against South Plains

Kan. — Cowley College rallied from 25 points down in the second half to defeat top-seed and previously undefeated Mineral Area Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena 105-101.

The Tigers still trailed 78-58 at the 12:42 mark, they were still down 17 when Mikel Henderson was fouled at the 10:15 mark, they trailed by 13 with 7:08 to play, over the next 5:02 they reeled Mineral Area in, outscoring the Cardinals 41-19 and leading on a Henderson three at the 2:01 mark 99-97. Mineral Area never led again.

Cowley was led by Dalen Ridgnal's 26 points, Moun'tae Edmonson had 23, Henderson added 22, Cevin Clark had 15 and Clarence King added 10 off the bench.

Mineral Area was paced by 27 from Kevin Stone, Malevy Lyons had 19, J.P. Robinson had 13, Jamir Price and Terry Ford each added 12. 

Cowley advances to play the winner of Ranger and South Plains. Mineral Area ends their season at 24-1.

Cowley hands Mineral Area first loss, advances to semifinals

The annual Inman Classic Car Show was moved in 2020, but the community has decided to put it back in the spring this year and build other events around it, and the Inman Spring Festival is going on Saturday.

"We've got the car show going on down on Main Street," said spokesperson Lori Kearns. "Down by the Community Building, we've got a pedal tractor pull at 9:00 that morning, we've got a fun run at 7, we've got three on three basketball tournament at 11. We've got a benefit basket auction going on for a young man here in town that is needing a new prosthetic leg. He was in a farming accident."

The car show is judged by students from McPherson College. The college has the nation's only four-year Automotive Restoration program.

"These guys, some of the things they notice, I would not have a clue," Kearns said. "They just blow my mind. I love to sit in the little conference room with them and listen to them make their decisions. What one saw that someone else didn't, that was period correct for that year, etc. They're very knowledgeable."

The hope is that having more events in the spring will be able to bring out visitors that may not always come to the town's fall Santa Fe Days.

Day full of events in Inman Saturday

John Gerald Hansen died on April 21, 2021, at his home south of Colby. He was 89. 
He was born on March 18, 1932, in Kearney, Nebraska. His parents had 
moved there from Thomas County to be nearer to family. He was the third 
of three children born to John Hansen and Sadie K. (Jensen) Hansen, 
after sisters Lillian Elaine and Verna Jean. All three Hansen children, 
oddly, were called by their middle names. 
The Hansen family moved back to Thomas County in 1948. Gerald finished 
his last two years of school at Colby Community High School, graduating 
in 1950. His lifelong love of basketball was born of his experience 
playing on the Colby varsity. He later enjoyed demonstrating his 
two-handed “Dolph Schayes shot” for his sons and their teammates. 
Throughout his life, he was known to cold-callers as John, to friends 
and relatives as Jerry, and to his oldest pals as Ole (“o-lee”), the 
inevitable nickname for a tall, fair Scandinavian fellow. 
Gerald attended Kansas State College from 1950 to 1953. Drafted into the
 army, he served in a mobile radar unit based at Karlsruhe, Germany. He 
played on the base volleyball and softball teams and traveled the 
continent on leaves. He also established contact with his mother’s 
cousins in Denmark, with whom she had corresponded but had never met. 
Gerald completed his college education at Fort Hays State College as a 
mathematics major, graduating in 1957. He returned to Thomas County to 
farm with his father. Soon after, he met a new teacher at the high 
school, Joyce Larson. Both were pleased that the Colby superintendent, 
R. L. Dennen, approved the match. They married in Joyce’s hometown of 
Concordia, Kansas, on June 23, 1957. They moved on to the family 
farmstead south of Mingo, homesteaded by Gerald’s paternal grandfather 
Fred in the 1880s but unoccupied since the thirties. Before fixing up 
the house, they had to remove the wheat that had been piled in the 
living room. The couple had three sons, John Mark, David, and Ron. 
Gerald was a man who expressed himself through his actions rather than 
his words. He would not have said it, but he was proud of having 
provided for his family, having stewarded, improved, and increased the 
farm through a third generation, having championed Joyce’s career in 
teaching, having supported his sons as they found their own paths in 
life, having enjoyed the progress of his grandchildren – all girls! – 
and having maintained a farmstead that was spic-and-span and planted his
 wheat, corn, milo, and beans in rows that were straight as an arrow. 
He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the VFW and participated actively
 in their goings-on. He worshiped at the Colby Methodist Church. His 
friendships expanded to include new additions to the Colby community and
 several Coloradans who first came out to hunt his draws and stubble 
fields. Later in life, he and Joyce enjoyed travels with friends to 
Alaska, Mexico, and Europe. He also took the family to Denmark in 1975 
to renew ties with his cousins. 
Gerald Hansen is survived by Joyce, his wife of 63 years; sons Mark 
(Dana) of Chicago, David (Michele) of Wichita, and Ron (Traci) of 
Hutchinson; six granddaughters, two in law school, two in medical 
school, and two in college or soon to be; and nieces, nephews, and 
cousins. His father John passed away in 1972, his mother Sadie in 1994, 
and his sisters Elaine Metter and Jean Ross in 2015 and 1982, 
respectively.

Community Foundation or the Colby United Methodist Church and may be

Kan. — The South Plains Texans got all they wanted from South Georgia State College, but in the end, some patience and a timely switch from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone late helped them close out a 91-80 win over the Hawks Wednesday afternoon at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Texans had six players in double figures, led by&nbsp;Rivaldo Soares&nbsp;with 20 points, Jevonnie Scott had 18 points and five dunks,&nbsp;Dalph Panopio had 13 points, Benjamin Bayela and Myron Gardner each had 12.&nbsp;Philmon Gerewhit added 11.

For South Georgia State, they were led by 18 from Jalen King. Jordan Coffee had 17, Daniel Parrish had 15 and Bryce Brown added 11 before fouling out late.

South Plains will play Ranger College at 6 p.m. on Thursday. South Georgia State ends its campaign at 23-4.

South Plains advances with 91-80 win over South Georgia State

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ranger Junior College showed they may be primed for a run through the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament as they jumped out to a quick 10 point lead and defeated the 4th seed John A Logan 87-75.

The Rangers were led by Jorell Saterfield again with 23 points and Keisei Tominaga with 16. Despite the height disadvantage the Rangers also out rebounded the Vols and shot 51% from the field.

The Vols who spent part of the season as the number 1 team in the nation could never get on track after the slow start. A few runs got them close a couple of times but they could never fully get back in the game.&nbsp; Logan was led by Xavier Bell with 20 points and Romon Douglas-Watkins with 17. They end the season at 18-6.

Ranger moves on with win over John A. Logan

Cowley College and Trinity Valley had a track meet for a half, but the Tigers were too much for the Cardinals in the highest scoring contest in tournament history. The game was 77-70 at the break before Cowley really got separation en route to a 134-107 win.

Cowley College and Trinity Valley had a track meet for a half, but the Tigers were too much for the Cardinals in the highest scoring contest in tournament history. Mineral Area will face Cowley College Thursday at 2 p.m. Hutchinson ends its season at 19-7.

Blue Dragons lose to Mineral Area 80-77 Tuesday at NJCAA

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team plays the highest-ranked team it’s faced this season and it happened to be the 2021 NJCAA Tournament’s No. 1 seed in the second round.

The 16th-seeded Blue Dragons (19-6) will take on No. 1 seed and No. 2 NJCAA Rankings Mineral Area College at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the first game of the NJCAA Tournament’s second round.

The Blue Dragons reached an NJCAA Tournament milestone on Monday after a 95-86 win over Kilgore College. Hutchinson became just the fifth team to reach 50 tournament victories. The win was also Blue Dragon head coach Steve Eck’s 650th NJCAA victory, 382 of those coming with the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons will square off against the No. 1 defensive scoring team in the national in Mineral Area. The Cardinals allow just 60 points per game. MAC is sixth in the NJCAA in field-goal defense (37.6 percent) and eighth in 3-point defense (33.4 percent).

Mineral Area rolled by State Fair (88-52) and Moberly Area (66-56) in the regional tournament and defeated Triton 75-56 in the district championship game.

The Blue Dragons, in four postseason games, is averaging 92.8 points per game so far. Hutchinson is shooting 50.6 percent in the postseason and are plus 10.0 in rebounding margin.

Sophomore guard Josh Baker leads five Blue Dragons scoring in double figures in the postseason at 17.8 points per game.

Tuesday’s matchup will be only the second time that Hutchinson and Mineral Area will have played. The other meeting came on December 31, 1992, in the championship game of the Mesa Rotary Tournament. The Dragons lost that meeting 63-56.

Mineral Area is led by forward Malevy Leons, who is averaging 18.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Leons shoots 56.6 percent from the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;Keonte Jones is the Cardinals’ second-leading scorer at 12.0 points per game. Terrion Murdix is third at 9.8 points and Kevin Stone is fourth at 9.7 points per game.

The Blue Dragons are 3-2 in the second round of the NJCAA Tournament. Hutchinson looks for its 17th appearance in the NJCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

Dragons to battle tourney top-seed Mineral Area in NJCAA 2nd Round

John Alvin Scherling, 74, of Wichita, KS, passed away April 16, 2021 surrounded by family.&nbsp;

He was born June 13, 1946, in Hutchinson, KS to Alvin and Louise Scherling.&nbsp;John graduated from Emporia State University and was a teacher and musical director at Buhler High School for over 20 years.&nbsp; He was also a musical accompanist at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS and taught music appreciation, various piano courses and piano accompaniment at Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS.&nbsp; John enjoyed vacationing in Palm Springs, cooking and spending time with his family.

John is survived by his husband, Steve Tuck, of 21 years; son, Mark, daughter-in-law, Lauren, grandson, Grant, granddaughters, Elyse, and Lena, of Cave Creek, AZ; daughter, Amy, son-in-law, Brandon, and granddaughter, Kinley, of Buhler; daughter, Julie, son-in-law, Ryan, and grandsons, Jackson and Austin, of Eagle, CO.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021, at Buhler Municipal West Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Willmar Harder. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary.

Lisa M. Ediger, 57, passed away on April 14, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, KS. She was born May 23, 1963 in Hutchinson, KS., the daughter of Roland M. and Theresa M. (Engel) Ediger. 

Lisa graduated from Hutchinson High School and received her Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College. She worked for Peels, State Beauty Supply, Lowen Sign, and Hutchinson Newspaper in the classified department and Potters Plumbing as an office manager. Lisa had a love for the Kansas City Chiefs. Lisa attended St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in her early years and later attended Westside Baptist Church. 

Lisa was preceded in death by her parents. 

Survivors include her three brothers, Michael L. (Yunhi C.) Ediger of Lawrence, KS., William D. (Tamara L.) Ediger and Anthony S. Ediger both of Hutchinson; one sister, Patricia A. Butler of Hutchinson; longtime friends Kathy and Garry Huddle); seven nieces, Nik and Kristin Butler, Dana Barker, Allison, Mary, Sarah and Katie Ediger; one great niece and numerous nephews. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. There will be no public visitation. Memorials may be made to Hutchinson Humane Society and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Trinity Valley advances over Brunswick 96-91 at NJCAA Tournament

Kan. —&nbsp;Six players scored in double figures as the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team became fifth team in NJCAA Tournament history to reach 50 all-time wins.

The No. 16-seeded Blue Dragons pulled away in the second half Monday to defeat 17th-seed Kilgore College 95-86 in an opening-round matchup to begin the 2021 tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons (19-6) will now play No. 2-ranked and NJCAA Tournament top-seed Mineral Area at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the second round. Kilgore closes its season at 17-6.

Hutchinson joined Moberly Area, Vincennes, College of Southern Idaho and San Jacinto in the NJCAA Tournament 50-win club. The Blue Dragons are now 50-25 all-time in the tournament, including 13-5 in the opening round.

The Blue Dragons led 39-38 at halftime and then tied a season-high second-half offensive output, outscoring the Rangers 56-48 in the final 20 minutes.

The key stat was rebounding for Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons were a plus-3 in rebounding margin and Kilgore had six offensive rebounds. The Dragons out-rebounded Kilgore 23-15 and the Rangers had just four offensive boards.

Sophomore Jaden Okon led the Blue Dragons with 16 points on 4 of 6 shooting and a career-high 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Okon scored all 16 points in the second half.

Sophomore Josh Baker was also 8 for 8 from the line to finish with 15 points. Baker tied Bryant Selebangue for team-high rebounding honors with seven.

Majok Kuath, Stephan Gabriel and Isaiah Bujdoso had 12 points each and Chris Robinson added 11.

The Blue Dragons shot 47.1 percent for the game (33 of 70), including 2 of 13 from 3-point range and 27 of 31 from the free-throw line.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hutchinson out-rebounded Kilgore 40-29 and had just 10 turnovers.

Kilgore became the first time this season to shoot 50 percent against the Blue Dragons, shooting 31 of 62 from the field).

The Rangers had a one-two scoring punch who combined for 63 points. KJ Jenkins hit 5 of 14 from 3-point range and finished with 34 points. Da’Sean Nelson had 29 points on 11 of 17 shooting. The rest of the Kilgore team scored 21 points.

Kilgore was 7 of 19 from 3-point range and 17 of 23 from the free-throw line.

The Rangers had an early six-point lead at 10-4 after Dantwan Grimes 3-pointer. The Dragons came back to tie the game at 12-all on a Selebangue layup with 12:44 to play in the half.

The Blue Dragons built their largest lead of the first half of six when Baker scored inside with 8:03 to play for a 25-19 Dragon lead. The Rangers tied the game at 35-all on a Nelson dunk with 1:52 to go. Two Gabriel free throws with 55 seconds left gave Hutch a three-point lead, but Kilgore’s Stephan Morris scored with 32 seconds left for a 39-38 Hutchinson halftime lead.

With Kilgore leading 49-48, the Blue Dragons went on a 7-0 run capped by two Okon free throws with 14:02 to play for a 55-49 Hutchinson lead. The Dragons took their first double-figure lead at 68-57 with 9:36 left on a Kuath layup.

Then leading 76-67, the Blue Dragons used a 9-4 run to lead 85-70 after a Chris Robinson layup with 4:10 to play.

HutchCC advances in NJCAA Tournament with 95-86 win


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — NJCAA President and CEO Christopher Parker sees the relationship between the association and Hutchinson as strong going into the 2021 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament on Monday.

"It's growing every day," Parker said. "This year alone has put so much pressure on both the NJCAA, the local chamber and convention and visitors bureau to make sure that we're here today to have a tournament. It's just continued to build a relationship in the strongest way possible. I'm really proud of everybody who has played a part in getting us on the court today."

The timing has turned out to be good here locally regarding the virus.

"It's been a guessing game," Parker said. "Luckily, pushing this tournament back a month allowed that more spacing and time for everybody to regroup to see how things went with other things. Like I said, we're just excited to be here today."

This semester is presenting challenges the association hasn't seen before just because of the number of sports they have going on at once.

Parker: Relationship between NJCAA, Hutchinson strong in face of COVID-19

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team opens its 23th all-time appearance in the NJCAA Tournament bright and early Monday with Kilgore College.

The 16th-seeded Blue Dragons (18-6) take on the 17th-seeded Rangers (18-5) in the opening game of the tournament at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The three-time national champion Blue Dragons (1988, 1994, 2017) are 49-25 all-time in the NJCAA Tournament, including 12-5 in opening-round games.

The Dragons' last appearance in the national tournament was 2018. That run ended in the second round.

The Jayhawk West champion and Region VI runner-up Blue Dragons make their sixth and final appearance in the NJCAA Tournament under head coach Steve Eck, who announced last week he is stepping down after the tournament run for Hutchinson is complete.

The Blue Dragons earned one of the eight at-large bids after defeating No. 5 Coffeyville 76-75 in the Region VI semifinals and falling to No. 15 Cowley 116-107 in the title game. The Red Ravens and Tigers are both in the tournament field.

Kilgore (18-5) makes its second tournament appearance in the last seven seasons for head coach Brian Hoberecht, who was the head coach at Dodge City from 2000-08. Kilgore won the Region XIV championship, defeating Trinity Valley 68-67 in the regional championship game. The Rangers also defeated Blinn and Navarro in the Region XIV Tournament.

Hutchinson and Kilgore have not played since January 3, 1995, and it will be only the fourth time the Blue Dragons and Rangers will battle.

The teams have meet in the NJCAA Tournament. Kilgore defeated Hutchinson 83-78 in the 1958 national tournament semifinals.

The Hutchinson-Kilgore winner will play the No. 1-overall seed Mineral Area Cardinals in the second round at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

Blue Dragons to open 2021 Monday with Kilgore

Because of unforeseen circumstances, the Hutchinson Community College football team's Jayhawk Conference game on Saturday at Fort Scott has been canceled.

Blue Dragon Football Game at Fort Scott Canceled

The Hutchinson Community College softball team’s high-scoring offense lived up to its reputation on Thursday in a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader sweep of the Seward County Saints.

The Blue Dragons combined for 22 runs and 28 hits as Hutchinson run-ruled the Saints twice – 12-4 in six innings and 10-1 in five innings – at Fun Valley.

The Blue Dragons have won a season-high eight games in a row and reach the 20-win plateau with a 20-12 overall record. The Dragons are in second place in the Jayhawk East at 10-6 with six-straight KJCCC wins. Hutchinson travels to Barton on Saturday for a KJCCC doubleheader in Great Bend.

Noteworthy in the offensive onslaught on Thursday, Blue Dragon freshman shortstop Madison Grimes went 5 for 6 with a pair of home runs. That performance moved Grimes’ season batting average to .594 for the season. Grimes now leads the NJCAA in batting average.

Hutchinson’s 3-4-5 hitters – Grimes, Natalie Bevan and Carley Sterneker – all had multi-hit games and combined to go 8 for 10 with five extra-base hits, including two homers, eight RBIs and nine runs scored as Hutchinson produced 17 total hits in the first game.

Grimes went 2 for 3 with a double and home run. She drove in three runs with a single in the first, solo homer in the third and double in the fourth. Grimes’ double in the fourth broke a 4-all tie

Bevan was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles that produced runs in the first and fourth innings. She also scored two runs.

Sterneker capped a four-run fourth with a two-run home run. She also singled home a run in Hutch’s three-run sixth that brought the game to a run-rule finish. Sterneker had her second game of the season with three or more hits, going 3 for 4. She tied a season high with three RBIs.

Haley Miller was 2 for 4 with a pair of bunt singles. Kylee Dunn and Alexis Way also had two-hit games. Way’s second inning double was one of six extra-base hits by the Blue Dragons in Game 1.

Blue Dragon pitcher Jordan Galliher (9-2) earned her ninth victory with her third complete game of the season. She struck out five and walked two with five hits and four runs allowed.

Seward County took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. That quickly changed when Grimes launched a two-run home run to right-center in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 Dragon lead. Grimes now has a team-high eight home runs.

The Blue Dragons led 3-1 through three innings and then broke the game up with a seven-run fourth inning. Miller’s bases-loaded triple was the big hit of the inning and gave Hutchinson a 6-1 lead. Dragon bats relentless in sweep of Saints

CONCORDIA – Pitcher Sammy Sanchez earned his sixth victory of the season and outfielder Jack Torosian had a four-hit day to lead the Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a Jayhawk West split with the Cloud County Thunderbirds on Thursday at Doyen Field.

After dropping the series opener 6-2, Sanchez and Torosian played key roles in a 6-4 victory in Game 2.

The Blue Dragons, now receiving votes in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings, are 24-10 overall and maintained their hold on first place in the Jayhawk West at 18-4. Cloud County is 21-13 overall and 11-7 in the league.

Games 3 and 4 of the series will be played on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field beginning at 1 p.m.

The Thunderbirds had Sanchez (6-1) on the ropes throughout his five innings of work, but the Blue Dragon starter never allowed a big inning to occur. Only once, the third inning, did Sanchez retire Cloud County in order.

Cloud County started the game by loading the bases with no out. Sanchez responded with a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up to get out of the inning. Sanchez got some defensive help in the second when –

Cloud’s Adler Pierson – he was trying to score from first on a double to right field, was thrown out at the plate by the relay throw of Drew Reetz.

Staked to a 5-0 lead after three innings, Sanchez announced two unearned runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth.

For the game, Sanchez worked five innings with six hits and three runs allowed, only one was earned. He struck out four and walked none.

Josh Mitchell allowed a run in the sixth. Tyler Delong worked the final three innings for his fourth save of the season. He gave up two hits and hit a batter.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons had just seven hits in Game 2. Three of those hits belonged to Torosian, who returned to the starting lineup after missing extended time with an injury.

Tororsian went 3 for 3 with two doubles and was on base all four times in Game 2. His two-out RBI double scored Ben McLaughlin and capped a three-run first inning. Torosian walked in the third, led off the fifth with a single and delivered with two out again in the seventh with an RBI double to score Austin Callahan with a big insurance run for a 6-4 Blue Dragon lead.

Callahan went 2 for 5 with a triple and three runs scored. Jenner Steele and McLaughlin had the only other Hutchinson hits off four Cloud County pitchers. The Blue Dragons struck out 10 times in the game.

Hutchinson had its eight-game winning streak snapped in Game 1 as the Blue Dragons mustered only four hits against Cloud County starter Kolby Dougan, who struck out eight in a seven-inning complete-game performance.

Hutch’s only offense in Game 1 came from a third-inning solo home run by Cole Cosman and a Drew Reetz RBI single in the fourth that plated Will Reetz. That Drew Reetz hit was the last hit of the game for the Dragons. The only baserunners in the fifth through seventh innings were walked to Cosman and Sterling Sutcliffe in the seventh.

Cloud County touched Blue Dragon starter Zach Firmature for four runs in the second inning. The big hit was the three-run double by Pierson. Cloud followed with single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Firmature (6-3) had his personal four-game winning streak snapped with six earned runs and five hits allowed over five innings. He struck out one and walked four. Zane Covey pitched a scoreless sixth for the Blue Dragons.

Mason Lowe had a career-long 10-game hitting streak snapped on Thursday.

Dragons, T-Birds split first two games of KJCCC series

Tommy Allan ‘Tom’ Reed, 83, of Hutchinson, died April 13, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born June 16, 1937, in Hutchinson, to Ray and Vara (Gagnebin) Reed.

Tom attended Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958. Tom worked at Winchester Packing Company for 22 years before becoming a truck driver for Dillons, a job he held for 10 years before retiring. Following that, he went to work for the City of Hutchinson on their summer crew. Tom was a member of Teamsters Local 795. His biggest joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

On Aug. 3, 1963, Tom married Judith ‘Judy’ Hale at Haven United Methodist Church. They shared 58 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: children, Jay Reed (Chere) and Lisa Valentine (Ron) all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jeff Valentine of Haven, Katy Fawcett (Austin) of Wichita, Emily, Jon, and Jake Reed, all of Hutchinson, sisters, Patsy Moylan (Al) of Snohomish, WA, Linda Humphrey (Frank) of Abbyville; sister-in-law, Bernice Reed of South Hutchinson, brother-in-law, Ron Hale (Joneen) of Kansas City, MO; and numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Joe Reed; sisters, Shirley Schoonover, Glenna Arneson, and Deanna Hammer.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Laurel Cemetery, Haven, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

The service will be webcast and the link will be available below beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

"We have a fun event coming up on May 6," Teufel said. "It's brand new for our community and it's called Signing Day. It's going to be held at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy. This is not a new concept in our country. It's new to Hutch."

The idea is that those that are going on to two or four year schools because of talent on the playing field or in the arts aren't the only ones who should be honored for their future plans.

Debra Teufel, CEO of the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce wanted to highlight an upcoming event for kids who are going on to a career in something other than sports."We have a fun event coming up on May 6," Teufel said. "It's brand new for our community and it's called Signing Day. It's going to be held at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy. This is not a new concept in our country. It's new to Hutch."The idea is that those that are going on to two or four year schools because of talent on the playing field or in the arts aren't the only ones who should be honored for their future plans."It's basically for those kids who are committing to go into a career and tech ed track that requires some technical education, either through HCTEA or through Hutchinson Community College," Teufel said. "They're making that commitment to their future and we want to value that just as much as we want to value kids that are signing to go to college for whatever activity, whether its music or sports."The intent is to have as many Reno County schools represented as they can."Travis Reibel is working with the public schools and even private schools to make sure there's transportation lined up," Teufel said. "We'll have a schedule of kids coming in. We also will have businesses there that they can network with and talk about, maybe their future jobs and we'll have a ceremony for them. We'll have them come up to the table, they'll introduce themselves, they'll sit there, they'll get a commemorative shirt for Signing Day this year. Then they'll actually sign a certificate saying, I'm committing to my future career."There are other signing days that are school specific, like one coming up for WSU Tech in April, but the Chamber event is May 6.
