HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three Hutchinson High School students earned a total of four perfect scores on their exams, as the final scores of the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams were announced Monday.&nbsp;

Jacob Unruh in history, Koby Harding in biology, and Will Jackson in Spanish and biology reached perfection on their tests. It's the most in school history. The 2021 class of Hutchinson High School had 15 diploma and career-related candidates, with all earning their IB Diplomas.

The International Baccalaureate program offers a premier college preparation curriculum that has two categories, with the opportunity to earn a full diploma or career-related diploma. The full diploma program includes six IB courses and focuses on a specific subject of study, such as biology or history. The career-related program is taken in conjunction with Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) and focuses on career readiness.

Hutchinson High School began its partnership with the IB program in 2004 and added the career-related option in 2014.

Three HHS students post perfect scores on IB tests

Timothy Wayne “Tim” Johnson, 48, of Salina, Kansas, passed away July 6, 2021 at his home, after a prolonged illness. 

He was born January 22, 1973, in Ft. Carson, Colorado, the son of Walter E. Johnson and Carol A. Henry. Tim graduated from Lyons High School, Lyons, Kansas, with the class of 1992; and later received his ASE Certification from Hutchinson Community College. He has resided in Salina since 2008, formerly of Hoisington and Lyons. Tim worked as a painter for Cessna, Spirit, and Boeing in Wichita, Kansas, and at Hodges Body Shop in Lyons. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and most of all spending time with his family. 

On December 23, 2006, Tim was united in marriage with Beckie Dreiling in Hoisington. She survives of the home along with their four children, Zoie, Zylie, Zurie, and Zade; and their beloved dog, Ziggy. Tim is also survived by his mother, Carol Stewart (Mike) of Lyons; father, Walter Johnson (Chasity) of AL; and a mother to him, Denise Froehlich of Michigan; six siblings, Wally Johnson (Stephanie) of College Station, TX, Cody Luck (Jennifer) of Lyons, Neil Johnson (Jessie) of Michigan, Mandy Paterson (Keith) of Michigan, Stephanie Minix (Steve) of Lyons, and Michelle Richmond (Mark) of Rolla, MO; mother-in-law, Sharon Dreiling of Hoisington; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Tim is going to be reunited in heaven with his father, Dennis Luck; favorite uncle, Fred Henry; and best friends, Vern and Barb Stutz. 

Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 12, 2021 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with Pastor Joel Grizzle officiating. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present. Memorials may be made out to Rebecca Johnson (for their children’s education fund) in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel noted that Hutchinson was strengthened in the pandemic because people found what they needed closer to home.

"That return to local is so important," Teufel said. "We preach it every day, shop local, but I think people found the reason to be very deliberate with those patterns during COVID. Maybe that will be the one bright spot that we look back and say, yes, that was a turning point for our community to realize, there are wonderful businesses right here under our nose."

Teufel also said it's going to be a battle to keep our community the same size going forward.

"Population in counties like Reno County will continue to decline unless we are very deliberate about focusing on growth," Teufel said. "We've heard great examples of people that now can work from anywhere and they are choosing Reno County because of the great quality of life that we have. We promote that every day. We need people to be positive and share those positive messages about your kids coming back post college."

Teufel notes that over the last few years, the workforce in Reno County is growing, even though there are still more jobs to be had.

"We are approaching 29,000 people employed here in Reno County," Teufel said. "Four years ago, we were in the 27,000 range. Almost 2,000 more people working here today than were four years ago. That is one ingredient that's putting more pressure on the labor market. We just need more people. We have more jobs open now that we would love to fill and we need people to do that."

There are only about 117 people in Reno County right now receiving the unemployment subsidy, so there are more jobs available than people who are looking for work to fill them.

Chamber CEO: Workforce has grown, but there are still jobs

As far as other things, like legal matters, I don't touch that, because I'm not a lawyer, but I know who to refer them to and sometimes we like help pay for the lawyer or like expungements, if it's only a certain amount, we can help pay for those so that they can get on to a better path."

Logue said its important for those she serves to know that they need to continue to grow their income to become self-sufficient, even if it costs them something in the short run.

"There's like a $13 to $18 range per hour, when somebody's in there, that's where the cliff effect happens and they lose the benefits, but they're not really making enough to get past that point," Logue said. "A lot of times, one emergency and they are in trouble."

Logue said the expansion of her job to full-time has just helped her to serve more of the people who already needed help, she has filled up her intended caseload of 40 families already.

 More than two dozen development staff and fundraising professionals gathered at Hutchinson Community College June 15-16 for a two-day conference to share ideas, hear from other professionals and network.

Representatives from 17 community and technical colleges in Kansas met at the Richard and Jack Parker Student Union on the Hutchinson Community College campus.

“This was an opportunity for us to build relationships with our colleagues and know we all face the same challenges,” stated Cindy Keast, Director of the HutchCC Endowment Association. “Bringing all this outstanding talent to one spot was invaluable and a fantastic learning experience.”

Attendees from multiple community and technical colleges presented on topics covering alumni relationships and an independent consultant also presented to the group.

The group will continue to hold the conference annually, with the location rotating.

Development staff, fundraising professionals meet at HutchCC

Ronald D. “Ron” Simmons, was born in 1947, son of Dorothy (Mock) and Earl Simmons.  Preceded in death by his parents and wife:  Dixie (Cochran) Simmons.  Survived by:  sons Bradley Simmons/Jasmin Gartland and Ron Simmons/Angie Simmons, daughters Kristen Lepping/Shane Lepping and Trisha Rick/Kevin Rick, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 2 sisters.

Raised in Hutchinson, Ron moved to Denver and attended Rocky Mountain College of Christ before returning to live in Assaria.  He was an active member of the Church of Christ for many years, serving in various capacities.

Ron’s final career was as an over-the-road hauler, and he worked hard to build a custom hauler to take Dixie along to see the states until she was no longer able to travel with him.  He traveled the US and into Mexico and Canada, finally settling into retirement in Assaria.  He was passionate about auto mechanics, and learning; he was an avid and accomplished hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed time on his cycles and watching a good car race.  He also enjoyed singing, dancing and playing pool; and spent a few years doing family photography.  His final years were spent in Salina being cared for by family.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2021, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Rita Joanne Lillard, was born to Kenneth and Janice (Stackhouse) Coker on August 1, 1956, in Hoisington, KS.&nbsp;

Rita married David 
LaMonte Lillard on March 03, 1974. They raised their two children, 
LaMonte &amp; Virginia “Jenni”, in her home town of Hoisington, KS, 
where she worked in the nursing home rising in the ranks until she 
earned her Associates degree of Nursing from Barton County Community 
College and began work as a Registered Nurse. They later moved to 
Houston, TX, where David and his brother George started Discovery 
Systems Computer Company, and Rita worked as the primary book keeper, as
 well as continuing to work as a nurse. David was the love of her life, 
married for 47 years, they shared a strong Christian faith and they 
enjoyed many activities together, including traveling, going to 
restaurants, and attending the Airshow. Above all Rita whole heartedly 
loved her family, especially her two children and four grandchildren, 
and of course her animals. Her grandchildren loved her hugs, and the 
adventures they went on, even if it was just a trip out for ice cream. 
They loved her Easter baskets, and blowing bubbles together, and her 
cooking, especially her ham, baked beans, and deviled eggs.

She passed away on June 20, 2021, at 9:25 a.m. at the age of 64 being murdered, along with her daughter.

She is survived by her
 husband, David Lillard of the home; her son, LaMonte Lillard (Crystal) 
Katy, TX; her grandchildren, Anja, John, Clara, and Emma Lillard; her

Virginia “Jenni” Lillian Lillard, was born to David &amp; Rita (Coker) Lillard on October 16, 1981, in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp;

She grew up in 
Hoisington, KS, before her family moved to Houston, TX, where she 
graduated high school. She had a strong love of animals from a very 
young age, so after high school she attended Bel-Rea Institute of Animal
 Technology in Denver. She worked as a Veterinary Technician for many 
years, before deciding that she also wanted to “be the boss” so she 
decided to get her Bachelor of Administration from Strayer University 
where she graduated Suma Cum Laude! Jenni devoted her life’s work to 
helping animals wherever she went, and was known as “The Cat Whisperer.”
 She was a loving friend, daughter, sister and Aunt, and her nieces and 
nephew adored her. She had a strong Christian faith, which showed not 
only in her deep love of her family and animals, but also in how she 
cared for the owners of her patients. She was as soft hearted as she was
 strong minded, and those that loved her admired her for her fierceness,
 honesty, and compassion.

She passed away on June 20, 2021, at 9:25 a.m. at the age of 39 being murdered, along with her mother.

She is survived by her
 father, David Lillard, Houston, TX; a brother, LaMonte Lillard 
(Crystal) Katy, TX; her nieces, Anja, Clara, and Emma Lillard; a nephew,

 10, 2021 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Chris Lehew 
presiding. Ashes will be inurned at Claflin Cemetery, Claflin, KS.

Norma Joan Greever, 89, passed away on June 28, 2021, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born December 5, 1931, in Shawnee, OK, to William L. and Goldie E. (Olson) Stokes.

Norma was a 1949 graduate of Haven High School, Haven, and Adela Hale Business College, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was employed as a physician’s assistant in the offices of Dr. Ross T. Shook and Dr. Scott E. Sellers.&nbsp; Norma was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

On June 6, 1950, she married Donald Lee Greever, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He passed away on April 26, 1975.

Norma is survived by:&nbsp; sons, Don L. Greever, Jr. of Texas, Michael (Kim) Greever of Buhler, and Gary (Aleena) Greever of Hutchinson; sister, Wilma Gentry of California; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Peg Dodge of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Dennis Burton Neuenschwander, 74, died Saturday, June 26, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. He was born February 14, 1947, in Hutchinson, to Floyd Wilbur and Nellie Joanna (Frye) Neuenschwander.

He was a 1965 graduate of Fairfield High School, and graduated from Hutchinson Community College, Sterling College, and Emporia State University. Dennis attended Huntsville United Methodist Church, and was a United States Army veteran who served in Germany.

He restored paintings and antique and wicker furniture, made lampshades for antique shops, was interested in art, and an avid reader. Dennis taught school for a short time in Alden and WaKeeney grade schools. He also worked at Eaton Corp., Electrix, and the paint department at Walmart.

He is survived by: sister, Vicky McFarland and husband Kenneth; nephew, Aaron McFarland, all of Nickerson; aunt, Ora Henry of Hutchinson; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; grandparents, Harmon and Zetta Frye and Calvin and Lottie Neuenschwander; and niece, Robin Dawn McFarland.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2021, at Elliott Chapel, with Keith A. Dellenbach presiding. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Huntsville.  Military honors will be conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.

Rachel Ann (Esau) Neufeld, 90, went home to be with Jesus on June 25, 2021 at the Pleasant View Home in Inman, Kansas. She was born April 30, 1931 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Nick and Helen (Regier) Esau.

Rachel graduated from Buhler High School and attended Bethel College. She married her high school sweetheart, Wilbur Neufeld, April 2, 1950. They shared 70 years together.

Rachel was a lifelong resident of Buhler and member of Buhler Mennonite Church. She was the librarian at the Buhler Public Library for 27 years where she impacted many lives. Her favorite pastimes were swimming, reading, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her son, Wayne Neufeld and wife Pamela, Buhler; daughter, Lindy Hildebrandt, Hutchinson; grandsons Kelly Neufeld and wife Stacy, Baldwin City, Corey Neufeld and wife Michelle, Gardner; granddaughter Kasey Noggle and husband Monty, Inman; nine great grandchildren; and sister Helma Lou Kerens, Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, daughter Jane Neufeld, son-in-law Bill Hildebrandt, and brother Dr. Willis Esau.

Hutchinson Community College freshman and 2021 NJCAA national champion golfer Ben Partridge earned yet another major award on Monday by the Golf Coaches Association of America, being named the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman of the Year for NJCAA Division I golfers.

Partridge, a freshman from London, England, helped the Blue Dragon men win the 2021 NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf team championship, the program’s first in its history in mid-May in Lubbock, Texas. Also, Partridge became the program’s first individual national champion, defeating teammate Harry Crockett in a four-hole playoff.

In addition to the team and individual national championships, Partridge has won numerous other awards this season:

+ He was the Jayhawk Conference co-champion for the 2021 season.

+ He was first-team All-KJCCCC, All-Region VI and NJCAA All-American.

+ He was named a PING first-team All-American

+ He was named the Jack Nicklaus NJCAA Division I Player of the Year by the GCAA.

+ According to GolfStat, he was the No. 1-ranked player in the NJCAA this past season.

Partridge had a season stroke average in 2020-21 of 71.2 over 29 rounds played over the combined fall and spring seasons. Partridge had two tournament victories, six Top-3 finishes and placed in the Top 10 in 9 of 10 total tournaments this season.

The annual meeting has been scheduled for the Educational Facilities Authority of Reno County for next month.  

The Authority was organized in 2003 by Hutchinson Community College and USD 308 to facilitate the renovation, improvement, and acquisition of educational and athletic facilities as the College and the District determine to be necessary or desirable for their use and the use of the general public.

The Authority is governed by a seven-member board of directors, three of whom are members of and designated by the College's Board of Trustees and three of whom are members of and designated by the District's Board of Education. The seventh director is chosen by the other six directors from the general public.

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center has been designated one of only two of the state’s 122 hospitals to be designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence® (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Geographically, HRMC is the only hospital in the western two thirds of Kansas to hold this distinction.

The DICOE designation is an achievement beyond accreditation that recognizes best-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care. The evaluation includes a comprehensive assessment of the entire medical imaging enterprise, including structure and outcomes. The DICOE appointment recognizes excellence at multiple levels, including the organization’s staff, technologies, policies and procedures, and superior patient care.

To be eligible for this elite distinction, a facility must be accredited by the ACR in all modalities they provide, and in which the ACR offers an accreditation program. Another requirement is to participate in the Dose Index Registry® and General Radiology Improvement Database, as well as Image Wisely® and Image Gently®.

Raleigh White, Director of Imaging Services at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, reiterated an ACR statement that the ACR/DICOE designation is the pinnacle of ACR accreditations. “This designation is highly sought after and is one that few healthcare organizations have achieved,” White said. “I am proud to have guided the Hutchinson Regional team to this distinction. I accept this honor on behalf of Hutchinson Regional’s Imaging Services board-certified radiologists, technologists, and administrative professionals who deliver high-quality patient care every day.”

Wes Hoyt, Chief Operating Officer for Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, called the designation a one-of-a-kind program in diagnostic medical imaging. “This distinction is aimed at organizations that go beyond the gold standard of ACR accreditations,” Hoyt said. “A great staff at Hutchinson Regional has labored for more than three years on quality, customer service, competencies, standardization, and a host of other factors. Congratulations to the Hutchinson Regional Imaging Department for a job very well done. We are very proud of each member of the team.”

The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 38,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians.

Lois Ruth Neher, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She died from a ruptured brain aneurysm.

Lois was born in McPherson, KS on December 20, 1928. Her parents moved to Pampa, TX, where Lois grew up. She attended McPherson College, graduating in 1951. She began her career teaching elementary school in Newton, KS. Lois married Gerald A. Neher on December 23, 1952.

In 1954 the young couple went to the mission field in Nigeria with the Church of the Brethren, where they raised their four children. Over the next fourteen years, Lois instructed adults in Chibok, Mubi, and Kulp Bible School. They returned to the US in 1968, where Lois taught elementary school in Illinois. She retired from the public school system in Anna, IL in 1989.

Lois and Gerald raised full-blood Simmental cattle, Appaloosa horses, Greater Swiss Mountain dogs, and a menagerie of other animals on their farm in Anna. They hosted many foreign exchange students. They were members of the United Methodist Church in Anna and Carbondale, IL.

In 2008 Lois and Gerald moved back to McPherson and resided at the Cedars Retirement Community. Lois co-authored two books with her husband: Life Among the Chibok of Nigeria and Glimpses of Life in Northeast Nigeria: 1954 - 1968. She was a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Harlan A. Yoder and Fidelia (Frantz) Yoder Stubbs, and by her husband, Gerald. She is survived by her children Rodney Neher (Mary) of Janesville, WI; Karen Neher (Mahamoud) of McPherson, KS; Bryce Neher (Melissa) of Udell, IA; and Connie Weesner (Bill) of Hutchinson, KS; and by the following grandchildren: Ben Neher, Isaac Neher (Betsy), Joel Neher, Kyle Neher (Danielle), Luke Neher, Courtney Weesner, and Annie Weesner. She is also survived by her brother Gordon Yoder (Ann) of Longmont, CO.

Keith Kimple, 91, of rural Lyons, Kansas, passed away June 23, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. 

He was born August 26, 1929 in Lyons, the son of Adolph D. and Lena Gray Kimple. Keith grew up the youngest of five children and his mother died when he was 11, just as World War II was beginning. As he helped his brother and father on the farm, he had a special enthusiasm for working with horses and continued that interest the rest of his life. Following his graduation from Lyons High School in 1947, he attended Sterling College for one year. He then transferred to Kansas State University where he spent three years and majored in Animal Husbandry. He particularly enjoyed his friendships made through Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity during this time. There he met Marilyn Jones of Penalosa, Kansas and they were married on March 18, 1951. 

Shortly into their married life, instead of completing a final college semester, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps where he served during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Corporal. After his discharge, they returned to Kansas and became part of a new community, farming in the nearby Saxman area where they have resided for 67 years. During the 1950’s, there were opportunities for socializing with other young veterans participating in the G.I. Bill’s “On-Farm Training Program” and he looked back on those times fondly. As his family grew up, he was actively involved with Saxman Presbyterian Church, rural school activities and 4-H leadership. As a farmer-rancher, he was particularly proud of being one of the early breeders of Charolais cattle in the state, and also an early advocate of cross-breeding in Kansas. After their children left home, Keith and Marilyn continued for many years leading and participating in small groups such as Memorize the Word, mentoring at the Hutchinson Reformatory and he served as an elder during the early years of Faith Bible Church in Lyons. He wanted it known that he had rededicated his life to Christ in 1972 and that his spiritual life had become more meaningful to him from that time on. Keith greatly enjoyed hunting and especially fishing throughout his life, passing that interest on to his children and grandchildren, especially savoring the occasional trips to Minnesota or Canada. He had a lifetime creative drive, learning to craft leather while in the Marines and was still working every day in his leather-working cabin and usually in his woodshop through the month of his death. He greatly enjoyed the relationships he had with his immediate family as well as with his nieces, nephews and neighbors. 

He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 70 years; his son Kris Kimple and wife Melinda of Beloit, Kansas; two daughters, Kandace Jones and husband Ashley of Wichita, Kansas and Bonnie Kimple of Lyons; six grandchildren, Jessica Hodges and husband Jacob of Iowa City, Iowa and their children, Ezra, Caroline and Elliot, Daniel Kimple and wife Veronica of Quincy, Illinois and their children, Hazel and Harrison, Travis Kimple and wife Anh of Garden City, Kansas, Lena Lohrenz and husband Anthony of Wichita, Kansas and their children Willow, Declan and Rowan, Claudia Hills and husband David of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and their daughter, Alana, and Gracia Jones of Wichita, Kansas. Keith was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Florence Jones Kimple; three brother, Stanley, A.J. and infant brother Chester Kimple; two sisters, Lois Janssen and Francis Tobias. 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Faith Bible Church, Lyons with pastor Phil Green officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 P.M., July 10, 2021 at the Lerado Cemetery, rural Langdon, Kansas with military honors by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, July 9, 2021 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. Six future Hutchinson Community College student-athletes – 5 football, 1 men’s basketball – will be at Gowans Stadium Saturday night for the Kansas Shrine Bowl football game.

Kickoff for the 48th annual Shrine Bowl is at 7 p.m. The game is being played in Hutchinson for the first time.

Four future Blue Dragons will suit up for the West team – Haven’s Darby Roper, Clearwater’s Tanner Cash, Garden City’s Trey Nuzum and Little River’s Jayden Garrison. Blue Valley Northwest’s Leo Clennan and Lyndon’s Miles Kitselman will be on the East sideline.

Four other future Blue Dragons – Lansing’s Malik Benson, Mill Valley’s Jacob Harman, Holcomb’s Oz Perez and Salina South’s A.J. Johnson – were also selected to play in the Shrine Bowl, but weren’t able to play in the game.

Roper is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back who was named Sports In Kansas’ Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year. Roper led the state of Kansas with 10 interceptions this past season as he played an integral part in Haven’s deep Class 2-1A state playoff run.

Roper had 81 total tackles, 65 were solo stops with 2.5 quarterback sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss and seven passes broken up. As Haven’s quarterback, Roper completed 99 of 152 passes for 964 yards and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,119 yards on just 145 carries with 20 touchdowns.

Roper’s mother, Kristi (Rinehart), is a former Hutchinson Community College high jump national champion.

Cash is a duel-threat quarterback who threw for 1,268 yards and rushed for 1,425 yards this past season. The 6-2, 215-pound quarterback rushed for 10 touchdowns and passes for 10 touchdowns in his senior season.

Cash holds the Clearwater single-season and career records for touchdowns scored, rushing yards and passing yards. Cash is a three-year all-league performer.

The Class 6A all-stater was the top Buffalo offensive lineman in 2020. Nuzum is 6-3 and 290 pounds.

He is a Kansas Football Coaches Association all-state selection in Class 6A.

LEO CLENNAN, Blue Valley Northwest

Clennan is a 6-4, 215-pound all-state defensive lineman. This past season, Clennan had 37 total tackles, 25 solo tackles and six quarterback sacks. Over two varsity seasons, Clennan had 11 career sacks and five forced fumbles.

A Class 2A All-State selection, Kitselman is a 6-5, 260-pound defensive lineman. He accounted for 99 total tackles, 43 solo stops and nine quarterback sacks. Kitselman had a senior season-high 15 tackles against Centralia this season.

Garrison, a 6-2, 170-pound receiver – has had a busy summer. Already, Garrison has played in the Kansas 8-Man All-Star Game in Beloit and last week played in the KBCA All-Star Basketball Game in Salina. Garrison is a Blue Dragon Men’s Basketball signee.

Garrison is a two-time Eight-Man stater and was the Wichita Eagle’s Eight-Man Player of the Year in 2020 as Little River defeated Wichita County in the state championship game. Garrison finished with 31 carries for 236 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He completed 4 of 4 passes for 70 yards and a TD. He also hauled in three catches for 53 yards and a score. Another grab was a crucial 29-yard reception on 4th-and-22 late in the first half to set up a touchdown.

Future Blue Dragons in Shrine Bowl

The Kansas Board of Regents will likely consider later this year expanding a pilot program that allows for more hours to be transferred from community colleges to four-year Regents institutions.

"I think it's a great idea," said HutchCC President Dr. Carter File. "I think it gives students a greater opportunity to utilize their value at a community college. I think that it's going to enhance students opportunities at a community college. One of the things that many students now are faced with is a choice at the end of their freshman year, especially if they brought in a number of early college credits, or what we call concurrent credits. They are faced with, do they stay a year and get additional credits that may or may not help them toward their degree, or do they transfer before they have completed their full allotment of what is now 60 credits? We think this will give students the opportunity to stay that full extra year."

The idea appears to be to allow up to 75 credit hours to be transferred, subject to still to be determined conditions.

"The pilot program they had between Johnson County Community College and KU Edwards Campus was, they allowed a transfer of up to 75 credits in selected programs and areas," File said.

The pilot appears to have helped with retention of students all the way to a four-year degree, but HutchCC knows that making sure what students take will transfer will put an additional burden on their staff.

"We will have to have very specific advising and making sure that students understand exactly which programs they are going into, which 75 credit hours will transfer, if that's the number they land on," File said. "We do a great job with that now, but with six universities and 19 community colleges, it's difficult to keep all of those metrics in alignment."

It's most likely that any short-term agreements will be between pairs of institutions like HutchCC and Wichita State, rather than an attempt to align all of the community colleges with all of the universities at once.

File: More transferable credit hours would be 'great idea'

Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer sophomore Esther Karhayu became the first Blue Dragon in five years to earn NJCAA All-America honors.

Karhayu was named 2020-21 NJCAA second-team All-American after leading the Blue Dragons in goals and total points in the just completed season.

The sophomore forward from Kenya is the first Blue Dragon All-American since Jordan Downing was named a second-team All-American in 2016. She is the 13th Blue Dragon in program history, which dates back to 2005, to earn NJCAA All-America honors.

Karhayu is one of four Jayhawk Conference players to be named All-American this season. Karhayu and Barton’s Seugli Lee were second-team selections. Coffeyville’s Louise Atkinson and Kansas City’s Corrine Hughes were honorable mention selections.

Named the Jayhawk West’s Offensive Player of the Year, first-team all-league and first-team All-Region VI earlier this month, Karhayu was Hutchinson’s top offensive threat this past season.

She scored nine goals and finished with 18 points. Karhayu had game-winning goals against Butler, Barton, Dodge City and a Region VI opening-round victory over Coffeyville. Karhayu had three two-goal games this season – those coming against Barton, Dodge City and the Region VI tournament win over Coffeyville.

Karhayu completed her Blue Dragon career with 22 goals, one assist and 45 points. Her 22 career goals ties her with Kayla Delzer for 16th on the Blue Dragon career goals list.

Hutchinson went 7-4-3 in the 2020-21 season.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare Systems announced Friday that Cheryl Gonsalves has been named Director of Foundation and Communications, effective immediately.&nbsp;

Gonsalves joined HRHS in 2018 and was serving as Patient and Family Advisory Council Manager and Civil Rights Advocate for Hutchinson Regional Medical Center at the time of her recent promotion.

Earlier this month, Gonsalves was honored as the employee of the year at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Gonsalves will direct the Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation and oversee communications for HRHS and its entities.

Gonslaves grew up in Halstead and attended Hutchinson Community College before graduating from Emporia State University with a degree in Strategic Communications. Prior to joining HRHS, Gonsalves worked for several area businesses along with serving an internship at Walt Disney World. Also, she spent two years as a volunteer in South Africa.

Gonsalves and her husband Jeremy are the parents of four children.

Gonsalves named to new position at HRHS

Jaime Ann (Dryden) Meitner, 42, died unexpectedly June 22, 2021, at her home.  She was born September 6, 1978, in Larned, to Stephen and Marsha (Massey) Dryden. 

Jaime graduated from St. John High School in 1997, and Barton County Community College as a registered nurse.  She was currently working as a RN part-time at Hutch Health and Rehab.  Previously, Jaime worked as a RN for the Hutchinson Clinic and Reno County Health Department.  She enjoyed going to the lake with her family, exercising, and was a member of CrossPoint Church, Hutchinson.  Jaime was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister.  She cherished the opportunity to be able to stay at home with her son, Jacob, after he was born.  Only recently did Jaime return to work. Family meant everything to Jaime. 

 On April 6, 2002, she married Robert Meitner, in Olmitz.  They shared 19 years of marriage.

Jaime is survived by:  husband, Robert; son, Jacob, both of Hutchinson; mother, Marsha Dryden of St. John; sister, Lindsey Davis (Davie) of Garfield; parents-in-law, Rocky and Connie Meitner; brother-in-law, Cory Meitner (Caitlyn) all of Olmitz; sister-in-law, Stacy Steinert (Terry) of Kansas City, MO; nephews, Mason Miller, Landon Davis, Lynkon Davis, Tripp Meitner, Taylor Meitner, and Tanner Cassity; nieces, Everleigh Meitner and Lyla Meitner; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by:  her father (who died March 3, 2021); maternal grandparents, Berniece and Bill Massey; paternal grandparents, James and Adele Dryden; and uncle, Gary Massey.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2021, at CrossPoint Church, 1410 E. 30th, Hutchinson.  Graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. in Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.  Friends may call from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Jacob Meitner Educational Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.

Jaime Ann (Dryden) Meitner, 42, died unexpectedly June 22, 2021, at her home. She was born September 6, 1978, in Larned, to Stephen and Marsha (Massey) Dryden. Jaime graduated from St. John High School in 1997, and Barton County Community College as a registered nurse. She was currently working as a RN part-time at Hutch Health and Rehab. Previously, Jaime worked as a RN for the Hutchinson Clinic and Reno County Health Department. She enjoyed going to the lake with her family, exercising, and was a member of CrossPoint Church, Hutchinson. Jaime was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister. She cherished the opportunity to be able to stay at home with her son, Jacob, after he was born. Only recently did Jaime return to work. Family meant everything to Jaime. On April 6, 2002, she married Robert Meitner, in Olmitz. Evan L. Evans, 89, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Diversicare in Hutchinson, KS. 

Evan was born December 5, 1931 in rural Osage County, KS, the son of Howard T. and Evelyn A. (Lloyd) Evans. In November 1951 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged in November 1955. On September 3, 1951 he married Patricia Payne in Ottawa, KS.

Evan was a 1949 graduate of Lebo High School and graduated Kansas State Teachers College (ESU) earning his Bachelor of Science Degree. Evan worked at State Bank of Lebo as an Assistant Cashier and retired after 31 years. He was also a business teacher for USD #10 for 7 years. He was a member of VFW, American Legion and the Lions Club in Lebo, KS. He was also a member of Lebo Methodist Church. He was the Director of Senior Citizens Federal Housing in Lebo, was on the Osage County Planning Board and was the treasure of the City of Lebo as well as treasure of USD #243-Lebo/Waverly.

Evan is survived by his wife, Pat; daughters, Connie (Roy) Horton and Chrystal (Frank) Milazzo; a sister, Mary Evans Becker Ervin; two grandchildren, Evan M. (Dave Sanchez) Chorney and Bart (Amy) Horton; five great grandchildren, Clive, Vera, Tali, Burton and Hudson Horton; a sister-in-law, Terri Evans, and a daughter-in-law, Shelby Evans Mick.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Evan Eugene Evans; a brother, Dean H. Evans; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Ervin and Don Becker.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Arvonia Township Cemetery, Osage County, KS, with Pastor Barton Horton officiating. A family visitation will be held directly after the service.  Military honors will be conducted by the Unites States Air Force Honor Guard.  Memorials may be given to Lebo American Legion, Lebo Lions Club or Honor Flights for Veterans and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS. 67502.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College announced that it is taking advantage of the passage of House Bill 2064 by launching an initiative as part of the Kansas Promise Scholarship Act.&nbsp;

The initiative will provide scholarships to students to attend an eligible postsecondary institution for any two-year associate degree program, career and technical education certificate or stand-alone program otherwise identified by the Board of Regents.

The Kansas Promise Scholarship Act will allow students who enroll in select career and technical education programs at Hutchinson Community College to have tuition, fees and books paid for when other forms of aid are not sufficient to cover these educational costs.

"We are excited for any opportunity to help make a college education more achievable. The Promise Act will enable Hutchinson Community College to provide greater access for its students and further strengthen its position as a leader in technical education”, Dr. Carter File, HutchCC President said.
