As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

A combination of holding your breath and wild celebration is a part of the rollover to Y2K. Police guard banks and many watch to see if their computers will function. Once everything settled down, there was a lot of news in the 2000s, including 9/11, the Hutchinson gas explosions, and a scandal in the sheriff’s department. Efforts begin to save one of the city’s historic buildings, HutchCC and HHS get a beautiful new home for football and track, and one of the more high-profile trials begins when Max Ary is indicted. There's a new home for Eagle Communications and a major highway project begins. That, plus Siemens and more as we begin the new millennium on this edition of The Decades.

2000: Y2K comes and goes with little trouble. Hutchinson police stand by at banks just in case.

Shareese Teanan is the first baby born in Hutchinson in the new millennium.

The Hutchinson City Council and Reno County Commission discuss holding prayer before meetings. The tradition continues.

The Hutchinson police chief offers up his support for the new state seat belt law that allows officers to cite motorists for not wearing a seat belt.

Efforts continue to try to find a way to relocate Midwest Iron and Metal from the Lincoln School neighborhood. It is still there today.

Reno County Sheriff Larry Leslie is caught up in a money kickback scheme connected to the new jail annex along with Gerald Hertach. Leslie resigns and is convicted.&nbsp;

The City Council avoids controversy when it votes down a $20,000 expenditure for new chairs for the council.

The Salt City Splash opens after several delays to start the inaugural season.

The County Commission rejects a proposal by union to go back to collective bargaining for county employees.

The city approves widening 17th Avenue from Lorraine to Waldron.

2001: The world stands still as terrorists attack the United States on 9/11. Not to bow down to terrorists, the Kansas State Fair stays open.&nbsp;

City residents are held in fear as a series of gas explosions tear through parts of the city, killing two people and destroying the Decor retail store downtown.

Over the objections of County Commissioner Fran Garcia, County Commission pay is increased to $28,980. It's now 18,000.

Randy Henderson becomes the new Reno County sheriff.

The City of Hutchinson annexes 84 tracts of land north of the city along 43rd and Halstead.

Longtime area artist Marvel Senti dies at the age of 77. Her work can still be found in the permanent collection at the Hutchinson Art Gallery.&nbsp;

Garland Lundry is arrested and convicted for solicitation to commit first-degree murder of a Hutchinson police officer.

Law enforcement begin to see increased problems in dealing with meth.

The City of Haven takes entries for a new logo for the city.

2002: Work continues to plug gas wells and mitigation continues to rid the area of gas that was being stored underground. The gas migrated to the area of the city, causing the 2001 gas explosions.

Golfer Julie Inkster put it all together to win the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship at Prairie Dunes over Anika Sorenstam by two strokes.

Work begins for plans to expand K-61 Highway to four lanes from Hutchinson to McPherson.

The county begins talk of jail expansion due to overcrowding and aging facilities.

The Chamber begins Spirit of Success fund drive to help fund the business attraction program.

Stanley Hill files an $800,000 lawsuit against Larry Leslie and Gerald Hertach to recover lost funds from the jail annex scandal.

The Family Motorcoach Association brings more than 4,700 campers to the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Kansas State Fair GM Bill Ogg resigns under pressure.

2003: Efforts begin to address the falling population in Reno County by setting a goal to increase the population by the year 2020.&nbsp;

Job outlook is bright as 27% of local businesses and industries say they will increase their workforce while more than 70% say they will keep their workforce where it is.

The city goes to work with the Hutchinson Correctional Facility to help build a new city animal shelter.

Trevor Corbett is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Crystal Casey.

A civil trial continues against Oneok in connection with the 2001 gas explosions.

The Reno County Health Department is denied a grant to help ban smoking in area restaurants.

The Hutchinson City Council approves $1.8 million support for the building of an indoor water park at the former Holidome, which was then known as the Hutchinson Plaza Convention Center.

The Hutch High track team wins the class 6A state title. They repeat in 2004.

Reno County and other area counties become concerned over the extra wear and tear on county roads due to the continued abandonment of rail lines in the area.

2004: Changes to the death penalty law does not impact Douglas Belt case in Reno County. Belt was one of the first suspects to have DNA evidence used in his rape trial in Reno County.

After several years of frustration and losing seasons, Hutchinson High School football begins its incredible run of state championships. The Salthawks would win the state titles again in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Indoor water park Kansas Splashdown opens at what is now the Grand Prairie Hotel and Convention Center.&nbsp;

The city begins efforts to seize the Wiley Building from owner George Nerhan.

An outbreak of vandalism in Pretty Prairie prompts the city to purchase additional security cameras.

Gowans Stadium is expanded at a cost of $5.5 million, turning the dilapidated facility into one of the best high school and small college stadiums in the area.

Haven’s Ken Goertzen, who was a leader in wheat breeding research, dies.

John Deardoff, Sedgwick County Assistant City Manager Kathey Sexton and Arvada Colorado Assistant City Manager Bernice Duletski are all interviewed for the soon-to-be vacant Hutchinson City Manager position. Deardoff becomes the new city manager.

2006: Cosmosphere President and CEO Max Ary is indicted for selling artifacts from the space museum. His trial offers witnesses such as Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke and Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan. Ary is found guilty and sentenced to three years in federal prison.

The wonderful smell coming from the Betts Bakery ended when the facility closed for good.

The city begins efforts to save the old boathouse in Carey Park.

NAACP holds the state conference in Hutchinson.

Eaton announces it will close the hydraulics plant in Hutchinson. Financial incentives keep the plant open another 10 years before it closes for good.

Two teenage boys are arrested after a crime spree running through three states after they walked away from the Bob Johnson Youth Center.

Cottonwood Hills opens its first nine holes of golf. The course closes a year later.

Jackson’s Dairy is picked by Kroger to produce organic and soy milk products.

Allen Doyle holds off Kansan Tom Watson to win the 2006 U.S. Senior Open at Prairie Dunes.

Superior Boiler asks for a $50,000 incentive package for an expansion project.

2007: Eagle Radio moves to its new location at 9th and Main.

Construction begins on the new RCAT facility at Avenue B and Washington.

USD 308 voters approve a $78.8 million bond issue to make major improvements to its facilities. The proposal is approved 77%.

Dave Kerr is named the new president of the Chamber of Commerce.

The Underground Salt Museum opens. It is now known as Strataca. The museum struggles initially and asks the county for help. The county is reluctant to help.

The Reno County Commission approves $10,000 for a study on wind energy.

2008: The City of Haven is at odds with the county over a proposal to implement a tax break for a neighborhood revitalization program.

James Schlickau and Brad Dillon are elected to the County Commission.

The county is forced to take steps to curb the methane gas migration from the landfill.

Local Hitch native and 1959 Hutch High grad, Jerold (Jerry) Regier along with a car club friend Dean Brigman petitioned the City Council to allow a new Downtown Hutchinson special event: a 3 day-weekend car show. The Hutchinson Rod Run is born.

The city and county work together to make major improvements to Halstead Street between 4th Avenue and 11 Avenue.

In an effort to both remediate and find a useful purpose for the large amount of underground water pollution on the city’s east side, Hutchinson builds a $34.8 million reverse osmosis plant at 23rd and Severance. The plant uses 85% of the polluted water and 15% well water to service the city.&nbsp;

The ¼ cent sales tax approved in 1993 is approved again by voters.

The city passes an ordinance to allow just four cats in households.

The Decades: 2000s

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Riding a 20-game winning streak heading into the NJCAA Division I national championship, the sixth-seeded New Mexico Military Institute Broncos were trying to achieve something that had never been done before in program history.

An obstacle in the form of the eighth-seeded Iowa Western Reivers stood in the way of winning a coveted national title.

NMMI already had a five-set victory over the Reivers back on Oct. 16.

On Saturday night, the Broncos fought hard until the very end, unfortunately the ball didn't bounce their way in the final set as Iowa Western captured its second-straight national title with a five-set victory, 18-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Missouri State-West Plains 3, Bulter 1 for 3rd place

The Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly Volleyball team will add some new hardware to the trophy case.

The Missour State-West Plains Grizzlies (30-6) downed the Butler College Grizzlies (37-4) from El Dorado, Kansas, 3-1 in the third-place game this evening at the NJCAA Division I Women's National Volleyball Championship Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. The scores were 19-25, 27-25, 25-12, 25-18.&nbsp;

Florida Southwestern State defeated Miami Dade 3-0 to win 5th place.&nbsp;The #4 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers would have preferred it to come a little later in the day, but closed a record breaking 2021 season in style Saturday afternoon at the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, defeating archrival #3 Miami Dade 3-0 to finish 5th in their second trip to the Big Dance.&nbsp; Match scores were 25-19, 25-23, and 25-2o.

The Snow College Badger volleyball team placed seventh with a 3-0 victory over #1 seeded Blinn College, 25-21, 25-18, 26-24.

Central Wyoming completed their first trip to the National Championships with a ninth place finish defeating Jefferson, Missouri in 5 sets 3-2. Set scores were 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 15-8.

🏐 Iowa Western wins NJCAA D1 Title back-to-back with thrilling 3-2 battle over New Mexico Military

Darran Bret Cook, 58, of Hutchinson, died November 14, 2021, at University of Colorado Hospital. He was born November 12, 1963, in Hutchinson, to Richard and Valeria (Sutton) Cook.

Darran graduated from Buhler High School and went on to attend Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University. He worked in home construction, along with his father and brother, for their family business, Wholesale Siding Supply. Darran loved to travel with his family and attend Chiefs games with family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking and loved his dogs, especially Peanut. Darran was a member of Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson.

On February 13, 1988, he married Susan Elizabeth Bird, at Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson.

Darran is survived by: wife, Susan Cook, Hutchinson; son, Harrison Cook, Wichita; daughter, Sydney Cook, Hutchinson; parents-in-law, Daniel and Beth Bird, Hutchinson; brother, Randy Cook (Julie), Andale; brother-in-law, Doug Bird (Andrea), Wichita; nephew and niece, Jake and Angela Cook; niece and nephew, Delaney and Gannon Bird; niece, Amanda Rourk; aunts and uncles, Margie and Scottie Young, Hutchinson, Donny and Sharon Bird, Lawrence, Dee and Amy Bird, Castle Rock, Colorado, Debbie and Bruce Downs, Cave Creek, Arizona, Jimmy Bird, Lawrence, Jean Crewson, Apple Valley, Minnesota, Steve and Mary Dechant, London, England; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Darran Bret Cook  |1963-2021| 

Donald Rex Clothier, 91, passed away on November 16, 2021 at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. Rex was born on March 26, 1930 on a farm North of Sylvia, to Perry and Connie (Book) Clothier. He attended grade school in Stafford, attended and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1948. He attended Hutchinson Community College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951.

Rex attended basic training in Wichita Falls, Texas and was stationed at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisiana working on B-29 bombers that flew bombing missions from Korea to Okinawa. He was later stationed in Okinawa with the 307th Bomber Wing to work on aircraft that flew missions over Korea. He was also stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, Greenland and Saudi Arabia, returning to Lake Charles Air Force Base in 1955, where he was honorably discharged. In July 1955 he entered the Kansas Highway Patrol school on the University of Kansas Campus in Lawrence. Rex met Pat Lang while working as the Driver’s License Examiner for Sedgwick County and Pat was working for the Internal Revenue Service. They were united in marriage on January 12, 1957 at First United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. They were married for 38 years and raised four children. Rex served on the patrol in Marion, Salina, Lyons, and Dodge City where he was promoted to Sergeant overseeing ten troopers. He retired in 1980 from the Patrol but continued to work. Rex worked for Farmland Insurance Company, was a Rural Mail Carrier in Dodge City and drove a school bus for Marion Unified School District. He spent many happy hours riding a lawn mower with his son, Greg. His wife Pat preceded him in death in 1995. Also preceding him were his parents, his brother, James, and his sister, Jeannette. He is survived by his four children: Belinda Amend and her husband, Doug, Hesston, Kansas; Brad Clothier and his wife, Karen, Scottsdale, Arizona; Lori Wilhelm and her husband, Richard, Lubbock, Texas; Greg Clothier and his wife, Denise, Wichita. His ten grandchildren: Amanda Harrison, and her husband, Cory, Moundridge; Derrick Amend and his fiancé, Sydney, Wichita; Sara Amend and her fiancé, Preston, Wichita, Kansas; Ashley Stevenson and her husband, Tyler, Wichita; Tyler Kirby and her husband, Chris, Wichita; Abby Clothier, Wichita; Chelsea Boatright and her husband, Clay, Aurora, Colorado; Amber Wilhelm, San Antonio, Texas; Brian Wilhelm and his wife Jade, Lubbock, Texas; Cody Wilhelm, Lubbock, Texas. He also has eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Services will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Marion Christian Church with Carl Helm officiating.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The 2021 edition of the NJCAA D1 Women's Volleyball Championship final four is set after an exciting day of competition on Friday.

Only one of the top seeds remain as #1 seeded Blinn, Texas was swept by the NJCAA D1 defending champion Iowa Western 3-0 in the late match on Friday night.&nbsp; 

The Region VI Kansas representative Butler swept Snow College 3-0. Butler also swept Wallace State to earn the right to match up against Snow in their opening match of the tournament. Butler is seeded #2 in this years tournament and is their first time to the National Championship.

The other two teams to reach the semifinals are Missouri State-West Plains and New Mexico Military.&nbsp; West Plains swept Central Wyoming and the #4 seed Florida Southwestern to earn the right to play Iowa Western tonight at 6:30pm at the Sports Arena.

New Mexico Military will play Butler Community College on court 2 at 6:30pm.

NJCAA D1 Volleyball semifinalists set

Daniel “Dan” Ray Barber, 40, passed away November 14, 2021, at his home in Newton, Kansas.

He was born December 24, 1980, in Cushing, Oklahoma, the son of Carl Ray Barber and Belinda Crumrine-Anderson. Dan attended Newton High School, graduating with the class of 98-99. He later attended Hutchinson Community College, receiving his associate degree in business management.

He was employed at Ember Hope in Newton as a supervisor. Dan was passionate about his work and loved having the opportunity to help kids.

Dan was a huge sports fan and supported the Lakers, Sooners, Yankees, and the Patriots. He dominated Madden on XBOX and Playstation. Dan was a huge WWE Wrestling fan, passing his love and knowledge of all things wrestling to his daughter, Tatum.

While he enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, he loved even more being part of a team. Dan played almost every sport known to man and was currently a short stop on the Backdoor Sliders softball team, helping them win several tournaments and league championships.

Dan loved horror and comic-based movies, bright and bold fashion (especially shoes), and looking for any occasion to play music loudly. He was also very active in the community and looked for any way he could help or show support locally.

Dan was a son, brother, friend, and mentor, but most importantly – a father. Dan built his life around his daughter, Tatum, and was her biggest supporter and cheerleader. Anyone who knew Dan also knew who Tatum was, as he would constantly sing her praises.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Tatum Barber; mother and step-father, Belinda and Joe Anderson; brothers, Anthony Barber and Jeremy Barber; nieces, Katie and Kassie Barber; grandmother, Sally Montgomery; his work and softball family; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Ray Barber; aunt, Sue Miller; and uncle, Bill Barber.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m.. Following Dan’s wishes, a family graveside service will take place at a later date in Cushing, Oklahoma.

Daniel “Dan” Ray Barber, 40, passed away November 14, 2021, at his home in Newton, Kansas.He was born December 24, 1980, in Cushing, Oklahoma, the son of Carl Ray Barber and Belinda Crumrine-Anderson. Dan attended Newton High School, graduating with the class of 98-99. He later attended Hutchinson Community College, receiving his associate degree in business management.He was employed at Ember Hope in Newton as a supervisor. Dan was passionate about his work and loved having the opportunity to help kids.Dan was a huge sports fan and supported the Lakers, Sooners, Yankees, and the Patriots. He dominated Madden on XBOX and Playstation. Dan was a huge WWE Wrestling fan, passing his love and knowledge of all things wrestling to his daughter, Tatum.While he enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, he loved even more being part of a team. Dan played almost every sport known to man and was currently a short stop on the Backdoor Sliders softball team, helping them win several tournaments and league championships.Dan loved horror and comic-based movies, bright and bold fashion (especially shoes), and looking for any occasion to play music loudly. Theolyn Ann (T-Ann) Kerschner, 89, of McPherson, Kansas entered Eternal Life on Monday, November 15, 2021. T-Ann was born in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of the late Ted and Ann Marie (Peterson) Wallerstedt, which were of Swedish heritage. When T-Ann was a young age, the family moved to McPherson. T-Ann attended Lincoln Elementary School, McPherson Middle School, and graduated from McPherson High School in 1950. In October 1952, T-Ann was united in marriage to Clifford H. “Cliff” Kerschner at Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson. Cliff preceded her in death on March 26, 2012. T-Ann was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, singing in the Trinity Church Choir, working on quilts, and doing activities in the Fellowship Club. In addition to being active in her church, T-Ann worked many years in the public relations office at Bethany College and sang in the Messiah in Lindsborg. She and Cliff were active members of the American-Scandinavian Association. T-Ann was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, McPherson chapter. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center announced this week that Janet Brock, APRN, will bring 30 years of local healthcare expertise to Hutchinson Hematology and Oncology, joining Dr. Sawsan Amireh’s staff.

Brock, a longtime member of the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center team, has worked with the Hutchinson Clinic and as a hospitalist with Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Since September 2019, she has served as the Employee Health Manager at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Brock holds a master’s degree in Family Practice from Wichita State University, a bachelor’s in Nursing from WSU, and an associate in Nursing from Hutchinson Community College.

Brock described the new position as an exciting and important opportunity. “Oncology patients, for good reasons, are often overwhelmed by their prognoses,” Brock said. “At the same time, I have found there is no one more appreciative of your time than an oncology patient.”

Ken Johnson, President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said Janet will be a great asset to the staff at Hutchinson Hematology and Oncology. “Janet has a vast background in multiple facets of healthcare. That experience, coupled with a special calling to work with oncology patients, makes her a perfect fit for this new position,” Johnson said. “Her distinguished resume in healthcare is a great preparation for her new responsibilities.”

Brock and her husband, Paul, are the parents of five grown children.

Brock joins hematology and oncology at HRMC

Jody Marie Dombaugh Miller, 88, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away peacefully at 11:01 a.m., Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 while in the company of family members at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. Jody was born in Coldwater, Kansas on April 28, 1933, the daughter of Fred Clifford and Myrtle Marie (Atteberry) Clinesmith. Jody attended the Coldwater elementary schools and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1951. She then attended the Pratt Community College, Pratt, Kansas for one year. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in McPherson. Jody enjoyed her dogs, camping and traveling in her motor home, cooking, music, music theater, she loved her church family and loved spending time with her friends and family. Jody was a homemaker. Prior to her retirement she was a secretary for Flory and Karstetter Law Office and later was a secretary for Prairie View Mental Health Center, McPherson, Kansas. Jody was united in marriage to Darrell Neil Dombaugh on May 17, 1953 at the Methodist Church, Coldwater, Kansas. Darrell died on December 19, 2002. Jody was then married to Merlin J. Miller on August 18, 2008 in McPherson, Kansas. She is survived by her husband, Merlin Miller, of McPherson, Kansas; her daughter Dalyn Cantrell and husband Mark, of McPherson, Kansas; her two grandchildren, Casey Cantrell, of Austin, Texas and Cristen Cantrell, of Seattle Washington; her step children, Cheri Hudson and husband Neal, of Wasso, California, Kevin Miller and husband Herb Acevedo, of Provincetown, Massachusetts and Diane Patton and husband Jim, of Maize, Kansas and her step grandchildren, Colby Patton, of Oxford, Kansas, Riley Patton and Cara Hudson, of McPherson, Kansas. Jeanne Carol Lukenbach, 58, passed away November 12, 2021, in Newton, Kansas.

She was born September 13, 1963, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Mary (McGaha) Ryan. She attended high school in Ulysses, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1981. Following high school Jeanne attended Word of Life Worship College.

On July 27, 1982, Jeanne was united in marriage to her soulmate, Dean Lukenbach. They celebrated their 39th&nbsp;wedding anniversary this year.

Jeanne was a talented artist, musician, singer, painter, crafter, quilter, chef, and writer.

Jeanne was friendly and outgoing, she never met a stranger. A sweet person, she was very giving and always willing to help others. Jeanne was open and loving towards her friends and brought so much joy with her child-like zest for life.

A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and all around wonderful lady, Jeanne will be deeply missed.

Jeanne is survived by her soulmate, Dean Lukenbach; children, April (Casey) Harmon, Alex (Brittney) Lukenbach, and Laurel (Steven) Storm; 10 grandchildren; brother, Steve Ryan; and sisters, Nancy and Dianna.

Kan. — HutchCC All-American golfer Ben Partridge has made his 4-year college choice.

"I'm committing to the University of San Francisco," Partridge said Monday. "The guys on the team and also the coach, I really got along with well. I can definitely see myself benefiting more out of San Francisco than any of the other schools that I spoke to. I'm looking forward to it."

Partridge was named the NJCAA Division I winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award in June after winning the individual national title. The London native said he felt at home in San Francisco.

"I really look forward to spending time in what feels like home," Partridge said. "Also, their business degree, their business management degree is unbelievable. The academic side of it, I think, is important for me after golf. If that's the route I'm going to take after golf is business management, then, having that sort of strong degree behind me is really beneficial."

Partridge also is looking to build his potential tour resume.

"The introduction of the PGA Tour university rankings was a big factor in why I am going to San Francisco," Partridge said. "That gives college players at top D-1 schools the opportunity to earn points, on like an order of merit system, and the top five get Korn Ferry Tour cards. Going all the way down to 15th, you get Canadian Tour or Latin America, so, the ambition is definitely to turn pro. With that system, I think it can definitely benefit me to get one foot, sort of, in the door."

Partridge looks forward to the spring and the opportunity to help his Blue Dragon teammates win another title before moving on.

Ben Partridge is going to San Francisco

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees was given an overview of a new video board for Gowans Stadium at their meeting last week.&nbsp;

HutchCC Athletic Director Josh Gooch advised the Board of plans to install a new 24’ x 40’ video board at the south end of the stadium. The board is to be paid for through private contributions. Current plans are for the new scoreboard to be in place and ready to be used for the NJCAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Board also received updates on its strategic planning initiatives, approved the College bills and addressed other items of routine business.

The next meeting of the board will be on Thursday, December 9. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater. The public is invited to attend.&nbsp;

Hutch CC BOT gets update on new scoreboard for Gowans Stadium

RICHMOND, Virginia – The Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team posted their second-straight national Top 15 finish on Saturday with a 12th-place performance at the 2021 NJCAA Division I Championships at Pole Green Park.

After a seventh-place performance in 2020, the Blue Dragons finished 12th on Saturday scoring 328 team points. The Dragons were the fourth-highest finishing team from Region VI.

College of Southern Idaho won the team national championship with 60 points. Cloud County was the national runner-up with 128 points and El Paso was third with 139 points. El Paso’s Faith Nyseha was the individual national champion in 17:08.08.

All-American Louise Cocking was the top Blue Dragon on Saturday. She finished 21st overall – she was the seventh Region VI runner to finish – posting a time of 19:13.9. Last season, Cocking earned first-team NJCAA All-America honors with a fifth-place finish. Cocking was the Region VI and Jayhawk West champion this season.

The Blue Dragons had one other Top 50 finisher. Sophomore Noelle Higaldo was 50th was a personal-best time of 20:12.5.

Freshman Anastasia Meyer and sophomores Izzy Wheeler and Jurney Yung were the other Blue Dragons to figure into the team score.

Meyer was 86th with a time of 21:22.0. Wheeler placed 90th in a time of 21:29.4. Jung was 95th in a PR time of 21:47.6.

Jung’s top two career times have come at the NJCAA Championships.

Freshman Michele Gage placed 104th in a time of 21:58.1. Freshman Sydney Grauer was 139th in a time of 24:12.8.

The Dragons were the fourth-highest finishing team from Region VI.College of Southern Idaho won the team national championship with 60 points. Cloud County was the national runner-up with 128 points and El Paso was third with 139 points. El Paso’s Faith Nyseha was the individual national champion in 17:08.08.All-American Louise Cocking was the top Blue Dragon on Saturday. She finished 21st overall – she was the seventh Region VI runner to finish – posting a time of 19:13.9. Last season, Cocking earned first-team NJCAA All-America honors with a fifth-place finish. Dragon women finish 12th at nationals

RICHMOND, Virginia – Freshman Collin Oswalt was a Top 50 placer and Camelo Tarin ran a PR on Saturday to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team at the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship at Pole Green Park.

The Blue Dragons had only four runners competing and didn’t produce a team score.

For the sixth race this season, Oswalt was the top Blue Dragon runner. He placed 35th in a time of 26:03.9 on the championship 8,000-meter course.

Tarin posted his best time of his freshman season in 26:45.1. Tarin finished 56th overall. Tarin broke 27 minutes for the first time this season.

Sophomore Andrew Holt placed 87th in a time of 27:24.61. Last season, Holt placed 37th at nationals.

Sophomore Aaron Geissinger placed 123rd in a time of 28:18.7

Northwest Tech’s Vincent Nchogu was the 2021 individual national champion, the first Region VI runner to win a national crown since Hutchinson’s Andrew Kibet in 2018. Nchogu ran a time of 24:04.8

Iowa Central won the men’s team championship with 63 points. Iowa Western was second with 127 points and Colby was third with 140 points.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan.—The Hutchinson Community College football team gets its rematch Sunday with the Independence Pirates in the Jayhawk Conference/Region VI Playoff Semifinals at 1 p.m. at Shulties Stadium in Independence.

The Blue Dragons hope to gain a bit of revenge after a 32-28 loss to the Pirates on October 9 in Hutchinson when Deontay Wilson took a short pass over the middle from back-up quarterback Tyriq Starks with five Blue Dragons surrounding him and somehow working his way down the sideline for a go-ahead touchdown with 6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

At stake is a berth in the playoff championship game on November 21 in Wichita's Riverfront Stadium to take on the Garden City/Butler winner in the other semifinal.

For the No. 12-ranked Blue Dragons (6-2), a victory will provide an opportunity to move up the NJCAA National Rankings and try to somehow get into the Top 4 of the NJCAA Rankings for an opportunity to defend their national championship.

For KJCCC co-champion Independence (8-1), a spot in the NJCAA Top 4 is squarely on the line. The No. 5 Pirates are on the outside looking in at the Top 4 now occupied by No. 1 Iowa Western, No. 2 Snow, No. 3 New Mexico Military and No. 4 Northwest Mississippi.

The Blue Dragons advanced to their 12th all-time league/region playoff semifinal after a 77-0 domination of Highland last Sunday in Gowans Stadium. Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/laible_dylan_vw09">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;threw for a school-record seven touchdown passes and a career-high 365 yards. Three Blue Dragon quarterbacks threw for school-records of 485 passing yards and nine touchdown passes.

Defensively, the Dragons shut out Highland, holding the Scotties to just 70 yards total offense. Hutchinson racked up 659 total yards, the fourth-highest single-game total in Blue Dragon history.

Independence had little resistance from Fort Scott in a 63-2 opening-round victory. The Pirates out-gained the Greyhounds 674-129 as Starks threw for three touchdown passes and 270 yards. Running back Tytraton Lewis had 111 yards on just four carried with an 80-yard touchdown.

The Blue Dragons bid for their ninth appearance in the league/region championship game. The Blue Dragons are 8-12 in the semifinal round.

The Dragons are 3-0 in the playoffs against Independence.

🏈 NO. 12 Brue Dragons to clash with No. 5 Indy Pirates in KJCCC Playoff Semi-finals 

The last decade of the 1900s is upon us in our latest edition of The Decades. The 1990s brought many things from the past back to life, including the Liberty Bell 7 and the reopening of one of Hutchinson's greatest treasures in the Fox Theatre. It also saw one of the first businesses in Hutchinson absorbed into the corporate world, a new organization to benefit boys and girls in Hutchinson and a new visitors center at Dillon Nature Center. The Blue Dragons won a national title and a blackbird doesn’t fly to Hutchinson, but crawls in on a semi. All that and more on this edition of The Decades.

1990: The pavilion at the Farmers Market was constructed and named the Ontjes Pavilion.

The Hutchinson Community Foundation is formed to help provide philanthropic opportunities within the community.
