Maryanne Elizabeth Webb, 86, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2022, surrounded by family at Pleasant Hills, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was a homemaker and also was an office manager for Mustang Mobile Park and Smokey’s Industries.&nbsp;

Maryanne was born on June 6, 1935, in McPherson, the daughter of Lyndell Webster and Ina Josephine (Slabach) McDonald.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School and attended McPherson College and Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; On September 3, 1954, Maryanne was united in marriage to Ronald “Ronnie” Dean Webb in McPherson.&nbsp; They were married for 60 years before his passing on January 25, 2015.&nbsp;

She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include: three children, Michele Peel and husband, Kerry “Kap”, of Lafayette, CO, Kelli Dossett and husband, Mike, of McPherson; and Mike Webb and wife, Kristen, of Tucson, AZ; a brother, Robert McDonald of Wichita; ten grandchildren, Emily (Wade) Cherms, Trevor Dossett, Abe and Jake (Theresa) Tinsley, Molly and Henry Peel, Taylor, Spencer, Kalea, and Kaiya Webb; five great-grandchildren, Blake and Ella Jones, Fallon Webb, Judy Lynn Tinsley, and Ellie Peel; many special nieces &amp; nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Wayne McDonald, Clarence McDonald, and Lyndell McDonald, Jr.; and a sister, Velma Buehler.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 24, 2022, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 25, at the First Christian Church with Rev. LUBBOCK, Texas – A Mya Williams three-point play just 1 minute, 48 seconds into Thursday’s NJCAA Division I National Tournament opener gave the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team the lead.

The Blue Dragons stubbornly never relinquished that lead and advanced to the national tournament’s second round.

The No. 19 seeded Blue Dragons turned 14th-seeded Casper away in every attempt the Thunderbirds had to take a lead, including two potential game-tying 3-point attempts on the final play of the game, as Hutchinson defeated Casper 73-70 at the Rip Griffin Center. Hutchinson’s win snapped Casper’s 16-game winning streak.

Hutchinson (29-5) advances to play No. 3 seed Georgia Highlands (29-2) at 5 p.m. on Friday in the second round.

The Blue Dragons won their 20th NJCAA Tournament game in team history on Monday. The Blue Dragons are now 6-2 in opening-round games.

Tied at 41-all with 3:21 to play in the third quarter, the Blue Dragons closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to take a five-point lead into the fourth quarter. Casper – which forced nine ties, but never got the lead – scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to knot the score at 49-all.

The Blue Dragons had just three field goals in the fourth quarter, the final one coming at the 4:05 mark on a Mele Kailahi layup. Going to the free-throw line just nine times in the first three quarters, the Blue Dragons were 17 of 22 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Mya Williams sank two free throws with 13 seconds left for a 73-70 lead. Casper missed game-tying 3-point attempts from Dejaan Schuler and Sandra Frau in the final seconds to secure the win.

Williams posted her 12th game of 20 or more points with a game-high 20 points. Williams was 6 of 13 shooting with one 3-pointer, but she was 7 of 7 from the free-throw line, 6 of 6 in the fourth quarter. Williams also moved past Jamie Patrick (2014) into second place on the Blue Dragon single-season scoring list with 639 points scored.

Kailahi posted her ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She hit a momentum-changing 3-pointer with 5:20 to play in the fourth quarter to give Hutchinson a 58-54 lead. Kailahi had nine points in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Tor’e Alford finished with 11 points, five rebounds and fourth assists. Alford was 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.

Alford and Kailahi, Hutchinson’s third-year sophomores, both surpassed the career 1,000-point mark on Thursday. Alford became the fifth Blue Dragon to score 1,000 points – now with 1,007 points. She moved past Dejanae Roebuck and Janay Vulgamore into fifth place on the career scoring list, Kailahi now has 1,002 career points, which spans two seasons at McLennan Community College and her one season with the Blue Dragons.

Kalyn Ervin added eight points and Chanteese Craig finished with six points.

The Blue Dragons shot 46.0 percent for the game (23 of 50), going 5 of 21 from 3-point range. The Blue Dragons tied a season low with nine rebounds and out-rebounded Casper 37-35.

Frau had 18 points to lead the Thunderbirds (28-5). Schuler had 15 points and Kate Robertson had 11.

The Thunderbirds were held to 40.0 percent shooting (24 of 60). Casper was 3 of 15 from 3-point range – Schuler had all three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. The Thunderbirds were 19 of 26 from the free-throw line.

Ervin’s 3-pointer with 6:22 to play in the opening quarter capped a game-opening 8-2 Blue Dragon run. Casper scored five unanswered to pull within one. That run was snapped with a Janaya Washington free throw for a 9-7 lead. The game was tied at 11-all and 13-all before Williams nailed a 3-pointer for a 16-13 lead. Hutchinson led 16-14 after the first quarter.

Alford sank a 3-pointer with 8:18 to play in the second quarter to boost the Dragon lead to 23-16. Washington added a 3-pointer from the left corner with 6:47 left to give the Dragons a 28-20 lead. The Williams scored with 5:02 left to push the Dragon lead to 32-22. The Dragons then went scoreless for 3 minutes, 8 seconds. Casper closed the half on a 9-2 run to cut the Hutchinson lead to 34-31 at halftime.

Tied at 41-41 with 3:21 to play in the third quarter, the Blue Dragons put together an 8-3 run to close the period. An Alford three-point play pushed the Blue Dragon lead to 47-42 with 1:20 to play in the period. Hutchinson led 49-44 after three quarters.

Casper quickly tied the game at 49-49 in the first 44 seconds of the fourth quarter. Kailahi hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with 5:20 to go and then scored in the paint with 4:55 lead to give Hutchinson a 60-54 lead. The lead grew to 67-59 after two Williams’ free throws with 2:34 left. A Schuler 3-pointer, her third of the quarter, cut the Dragon lead to 68-66 with 1:21 to go. Kan. — Triton College defeated Kilgore College (TX) 76-65 Thursday night at the Sports Arena. 

The second half told the tale, as the Trojans led by just two at the break, 31-29, before switching to a to a 1-3-1 zone after halftime and going on a 25-8 run that gave them the cushion they needed.

The Trojans were led by Cobie Montgomery's 18 points. JJ Kalakon and Brandon Muntu both added 16 and Cam Denson had 12.

Kilgore was led by DaVeon Thomas with 26 points, Dantwan Grimes had 10 in the loss.

Triton, now 30-5, will play Northwest Florida State in a 7 p.m. semifinal Friday in Hutchinson.

Salt Lake to play in semifinals

Hutchinson USD 308 HR Director Dawn Johnson is pleased with where the district is regarding vacancies at this point in the year.

"Last year, we had a new teacher institute of about 50 new teachers that we brought in," Johnson said. "I've kind of been measuring where we are as we're inching up to the summer months. We're not even close to that this year. I hope that it is well under that. At this point in the game, we're seeing very few."

Johnson said there is a reason that they would have a better idea right now than some districts.

"We have some incentives in our policies at 308," Johnson said. "If you let us know before November, or before January that you're leaving, there's a financial incentive. If you're thinking of making that decision, earlier is better for us. So, that really got a lot of people who were thinking of leaving, or going to another district or maybe retiring."

Johnson also said the new crop of teachers coming out of school is encouraging.

"I had recently interviewed about ten students from the schools in the area, from Tabor, Bethel, Bethany, McPherson, Sterling College," Johnson said. "I was very, very impressed with those young teachers still finishing their final year of college."

Johnson acknowledges there is a workforce crunch right now, but she believes that pendulum will swing back in the coming years.

HUTCHINSON, KS — Kilgore College won over South Plains College 56-48 Wednesday at the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Mason Taylor led the Rangers with 12 points, while Da'Sean Nelson and DaVeon Thomas each finished with 10 points. Kilgore shot 36.8 percent from the floor and 35.3 percent from three point range Wednesday.

South Plains shot just 27.3 percent from the field. 

Kieves Turner led South Plains with 11 points, Savion Gallion provided 10 points in the loss.

Gary Edward “Papa” Dickinson, 73, of Hutchinson, died March 14, 2022, at his home. He was born January 25, 1949, in Hutchinson, to Russell B. and Helen E. (Haley) Dickinson.

Gary graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1967, Hutchinson Community College in 1969, and the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in 1972. He owned Self Service Drugs from 1981 until 2005. Gary and Nyla also operated Kansas Depot, selling everything related to Thomas the Train. After retirement, he worked at the Kansas State Fair for 15 years. Gary was an avid Blue Dragon basketball fan and a religious water aerobics participant at the YMCA. He loved traveling and traveled to all 50 states and to Maui, Hawaii, every year with Nyla. Gary especially loved spending time with his family and supporting his grandchildren in their activities - he played music at Inman, Nickerson, and Hutchinson High school baseball games. He was a member of Downtown Hutchinson Kiwanis Club, serving as Club President and leading the Flag Project, and First United Methodist Church.

On May 15, 1981, Gary married Nyla K. Christian, in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: children, Noelle Regehr (Jeff) of Inman, Jeff Reece (fiancé Amy Ray) of Prairie Village, Jennifer Miller (Cody) of Benton, TN; grandchildren, Jake Regehr (Traci), Wyatt Regehr, Ethan, Erin, and Adaire Reece, Miranda Miller, Lane Miller (Haley); great-grandsons, Jaxson and Greyson Miller; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Russell B. Dickinson, Jr., and in-laws, Leslie and Maybelle Christian.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2022, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Lerado Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family present to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. Gerald Dwight Hornbaker of Hutchinson
died on March 15, 2022, at age 94. He was born on October 16, 1927, near
Darlow, the son of Vernon Wesner and Laura Rundell Hornbaker. 

On August
8, 1950, he was married to Helen Fast Hornbaker at Zoar Mennonite Brethren
Church near Inman. His service will be held at the Hutchinson Funeral Chapel,
300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, on Monday, March 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM.
Interment will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery south of Hutchinson.

Gerald graduated from Partridge High
School and Emporia State Teachers College, and was a Kansas educator for 38
years. The last 27 years of his career were spent with the Lyons School
District, where he served as a District Administrator and Elementary Principal
at Park School and on Kansas State textbook committees.

A lifetime member of Kiwanis
International, Gerald served as President of the Lyons club. He loved to sing
in the church choir and men’s gospel quartets. He played and coached basketball
and enjoyed rooting for K-State, KU, and the Royals. Each fall, when younger,
he could be found walking fields, hunting pheasants with his sons. He prided
himself on his lawn care and gardening. His sense of humor was infectious.

He leaves to mourn: sons Gordon
(Susan) Hornbaker of Elizabeth, Colorado, and Ron (Kaori) Hornbaker of Austin,
Texas; grandchildren Angela (Dave) Kerschen, Traci Hornbaker, Laura (Jason)
Smith, Grant Hornbaker, Lydia Hornbaker, and Colson Hornbaker. He is also
survived by five great-grandchildren, and by one sister, Esther White of
Haviland. He was preceded in death by his parents, eleven siblings, his wife,

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It had been 42-years since Dodge City sent a team to the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament. The Conquistadors made the most of it in the first round of the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament as the Region-6 champions scored an impressive 82-65 over Snow College Tuesday night.&nbsp;

The Conqs got off to a slow start but gained the upper hand in the second half and once they took the lead were able to control the tempo. Dodge moves on to play at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The Conqs were led by Themus Fulks with 24 points and Kerwin Prince with 11.&nbsp;

After a slow start Dodge shot 53% from the field and outrebounded Snow 38-29. The Badgers were led by Wyate Lowell with 19 points, Drake Allen who scored 20 points in Snow's win on Monday managed just 11. Snow ends the season at 26-9.

The Triton College Trojans took a lead at the 16:17 mark of the first half on a three by Cobie Montgomery and never let it go, as they dominated the Caldwell Tech Cobras 88-62 in the first round of the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena Tuesday.

Triton was paced by 18 points from Patrick Suemnick, Brandon Muntu had 14 and Cam Denison had 13 for the Trojans, who improve to 28-5.

Caldwell Tech was led by Caleb Mauldin with 23 points, while Toyaz Solomon added 17. The Cobras finish their season at 25-8.

The 2022 Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team showed its trademark resiliency once again on Monday night and advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Basketball Tournament.

The Blue Dragons rallied from 14 points down in the second half to take a late regulation lead, only to have Connors State’s Mason Alexander drill a potential momentum-changing 3-pointer with 7.0 seconds left to force overtime. The Dragons once again trailed by two points in overtime with 2:19 remaining, but scored 7 of overtime’s final 9 points to earn their 51st all-time NJCAA Tournament victory.

The 12th-seeded Blue Dragons rallied for a 101-98 overtime win over 21st-seeded Connors State in the final game on Monday. The first day of the national tournament featured three overtime games.

The Blue Dragons (26-8) advances to the second round to face fifth-seeded Chipola at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Connors State closes the season at 28-6.

Hutchinson is now 14-5 in NJCAA Tournament opening-round games, including first-round wins in six-straight tournaments, which extended a Blue Dragon record.

The 14-point deficit is the third largest deficit the Blue Dragons have rallied from and won this season. Hutchinson has five wins this season when trailing by 10 or more points.

Sophomore Angelo Stuart posted his third 30-point game this season with game-high 30 points on Monday night. Stuart hit 9 of 18 total shots, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. Extending his single-season record to 102 3-poiners this season, Stuart is the first Blue Dragon to reach 100 made treys in a season.

Sophomore Kaimen Lennox scored 20 points, scoring 12 points in the second half and overtime. Lennox added six offensive rebounds and three steals.

Freshman Jayden Garrison provided a needed spark off the bench with 12 points and four rebounds. Garrison hit 2 of 3 3-point goals. Garrison is averaging 10 points per game in the postseason.

Sophomores Kobe Campbell and Jacquez Yow had nine points each.

The Blue Dragons shot 45.5 percent for the game (35 of 77), hitting 6 of 20 from 3-point range and 25 of 31 from the free-throw line. The Blue Dragons hit 18 of 21 free throws in the second half and were 4 of 4 from the line in overtime.

The Blue Dragons were-outrebounded 38-36, but had 16 offensive rebounds. The Dragons had only 12 turnovers to Connors State’s 22 and outscored the Cowboys 29-14 in points off turnovers.

The Cowboys shot 60 percent in regulation, but went only 3 of 9 in overtime to finish at 56.3 percent from the floor (36 of 64). Connors State was 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 24 of 31 from the free-throw line.

Jahcoree Ealy had a team-high 20 points to lead the Cowboys. Xavier Glenn had 18 point and Alexander scored 17 points.

The Blue Dragons trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half at 43-33 with 2:17 to play. Hutchinson pulled within 44-39 after a Campbell dunk with 36 seconds to play, but Connors State led 46-49 after Alexander scored with 3 seconds remaining in the period. The Cowboys shot 59.3 percent (16 of 27) in the first half to Hutchinson’s 45.9 percent (17 of 37).

The Dragons cut the deficit to five points twice early in the second half, but Connors State countered with a 14-5 run to take a 64-50 lead after a D.J. Basey layup with 13:45 to play in the second half.

Hutchinson countered that with a 13-3 run that included a Garrison 3-pointer that pulled the Blue Dragons within 67-63 with 10:17 remaining.

Trailing 75-69, the Blue Dragons scored eight unanswered, taking the lead on two Campbell free throws with 5:57 left and building a 78-75 lead on a Nate Goodlow steal and layup with 5:51 to go. There were six lead changes in the final 6 minutes.

Two Stuart free throws with 22 seconds left in regulation gave the Dragons a 90-87 lead, but Connors State tied the game with an Alexander 3-pointer with 7 seconds remaining.

A Goodlow tip-in gave the Dragons an early lead, but Connors State went on a 6-2 run to lead 96-94 after a Xavier Glenn bucket with 2:19 to play. The Dragons grabbed the lead on Stuart’s fourth 3-pointer of the game with 2:06 left. A Goodlow layup pushed the Hutch lead to 99-96. Connors’ Ealy scored with 11 seconds left. Stuart hit two free throws with 10 second left for a 101-98 lead. The Dragons got a tied possession with the arrow pointing toward Hutchinson to close out the game.

Dragons survive OT thriller in NJCAA Tournament

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If anyone didn't know about Harcum coming into the NJCAA National Tournament they certainly do now.

Harcum used their size and quickness and outmanned the College of Southern Idaho 92-65 in the first round of the tournament. Harcum slowly pulled away in the first half and simply wore out the Golden Eagles to end their season at 24-10. Harcum moves on with a record of 32-2. Harcum was led by Louis Blackmore with 18 points as all five starters posted double figures.

Beth Ellen Hutchinson, 100, died March 9, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson Village.&nbsp; She was born August 19, 1921, in Hutchinson, to Wade Nelson and Mabelle Wanita (Glass) Smith.&nbsp;

Beth graduated from Partridge High School in 1939, and college in 1941.&nbsp; She was a homemaker.&nbsp; Beth enjoyed reading, writing poetry and devotions, and volunteered to read books to those with visual limitations.&nbsp; Music was an important part of Beth’s life.&nbsp; For over 30 years, she played the piano at First United Methodist Church, and after moving to Good Samaritan Society, enjoyed entertaining the residents on the piano.&nbsp; She was a member of First United Methodist Church., Hutchinson.

On April 25, 1943, Beth married William Lowell Hutchinson, in Partridge.&nbsp; He died February 9, 2002, after they shared 59 years of marriage.&nbsp;

Beth is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Janet Fisher (Dennis) of Denton, TX, and Jean Henry (Kirk) of Buhler; siblings, Loel Balzer, Homer Smith (Esther), all of Hutchinson; and Donna Waddle of Topeka; grandchildren, Alex Fisher, Emily Dickson, Andrew Fisher, Becky Roper, Sam Provost, Olivia Samson, Joe Henry, and Donna Lyttle; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Provost (Edwin Mac); and a brother, Merlin Smith.

GREAT BEND, Kan.—Kaylee Kauffman&nbsp;scored a game-high 26 points and helped the Cougars fend off a furious South Haven rally with two big buckets late. &nbsp;Hutchinson-Central Christian 49, South Haven 40 in the class 1A DII quarter finals at Barton Community College in Great Bend.

Central Christian went on a 16-0 run to take a 35-18 lead with 3:05 left in the third quarter but South Haven stormed back with a 20-3 run and knotted it up at 38 in the fourth quarter after seven straight points from Aubrey Pond. &nbsp;

That's when Kauffman went to work, putting Central Christian back in front on a layup with 4:45 left before pushing the lead to five after converting a 3-point play with 4:08 remaining. &nbsp;

"She's facing a lot of box and ones, and we're still trying to figure that out, how to get her looks," Central Christian coach D.J.&nbsp;Kauffman said of his daughter, a junior guard. "We rely on our defense," Kauffman said. "The 1-3-1 trapping defense is something we've been doing a lot lately. Samantha Ramsey up top is the one that really makes it go because she's so long and athletic and just creates problems for people.&nbsp;

"We switched it up a little bit to our man and then we went back to our 1-3-1 and it really seemed to us carry us home."&nbsp;

Macey Pond led South Haven with 13 points while Aubrey Pond added 10. &nbsp;

Hutchinson-Central Christian advances in girls 1A DII tourney

Debra May “Debbie” Spence passed away Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born, February 3, 1957, in Liberal, the daughter of Merle L. Skinner Sr. and Isabel May (McCord) Skinner.&nbsp;

Debbie attended Hugoton Public Schools and graduated in 1975. She attended Wichita State University and graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.&nbsp;

Debbie met Lee Spence while attending Emporia State University. They were married May 26, 1979, in Liberal, and were blessed with three children, Dixie, Dustin, and Alex. &nbsp;Debbie thrived in her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother, supporting them in all their activities.&nbsp;

Debbie’s faith was strong, and she was a current member at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was the Hutchinson Middle School 7th&nbsp;grade Family and Consumer Science teacher for several years. In addition, Debbie was involved in the 4-H Foundation, serving as past president and treasurer. &nbsp;She was also involved in 4-H as a food, clothing and style review judge and as a Kansas State Fair judge for food. In her spare time, she was a water aerobics instructor at the Hutchinson YMCA and took quilting classes.&nbsp; Debbie was also involved at Trinity United Methodist Church as a leadership coach, and as a member of the Genesis Sunday school class.

Debbie is survived by: her husband of almost 43 years, Lee Spence of Hutchinson; sons, Dustin (Megan) of Olathe and Alex of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Eliza (4) and Jameson (6 months); sister, Cindy Louis of Pine Bluff, AR; brother, Sam Skinner of College Station, TX; father-in-law, Dwight Spence; and brother-in-law, Steve Spence. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dixie May Spence, and her parents.

Dalline Sullivan, 84, of Arlington, went to be with the Lord Jesus March 8, 2022. She was born January 15, 1938 in Hutchinson. She graduated from Hays High School in 1956.

She was a cosmetologist her entire life until retirement only a few years ago. During her younger years, she was co-owner and manager of Sydney’s Beauty College in Hays. Following that, she owned and operated salons in Hays, Pratt, and Arlington.

Dalline was a member of city council in Arlington, as well as serving as mayor for a few years. She was involved with the housing authority and the senior center.&nbsp;

She loved to garden, and was always considered the green thumb of the family. Hobbies also included crocheting and making floral arrangements.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Ernestine Sullivan. Dalline is survived by her children, Lynnette Froome (John) of Salina; Kyle Unruh (Patricia) of Buhler; grandchildren Brandy Coker (Tony) of Hesston; Sara Howard (Casey) of Buhler; Vince Froome of Minneapolis; Dallas Froome of Salina and Peyton Froome of Salina; great-grandchildren Aziza, Aidan, Codi, Thayne and Jovey; brothers Duane Sullivan of Arlington, Danny Sullivan (Gail) of Great Bend and sister Deanna Mick of Hutchinson. Family was the most important thing to Dalline. She will be missed dearly by family and friends.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will take action on proposed tuition and fees for the 2022-23 school year when they meet on Thursday.

Although tuition will stay the same for most classes, student fees will go up by $2 across the board for both in-state and out-of-state students. Other student fees will increase by a dollar in certain classes.

The board will also go over three different bids. Two will be for the welding technology department while the third is for replacing the roof of the football complex just north of Gowans Stadium.

The board will also pay the usual college bills and hear reports as part of the meeting which starts at 7 p.m. at the Shear’s Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.

HutchCC Board of Trustees to meet Thursday

OKLAHOMA CITY – For a brief moment on Tuesday, the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team led the Broncho Invitational.

The No. 3-ranked Blue Dragons wound up third in the 14-team, 36-hole tournament on Tuesday at Gaillardia Country Club. Hutchinson shot a second-straight team round of 302 to finished at 604, three strokes behind team co-champion Southwestern Christian University and Oklahoma City University.

Sophomore Harry Crockett led the Blue Dragons on Tuesday with an even-par round of 72. The Blue Dragons also counted scores from Ben Partridge (74), Addison Alonzo (77) and Dominic Clemons (78).

Crockett wound up being the low scorer for the Blue Dragons, tying for fifth with a 36-hole total of 146.

Partridge carded a 3-over round of 75 to tie for sixth at 147. Partridge shot a 72 on Monday.

Alonzo tied for third at 155. Clemons tied for 38th at 156.

Freshman Blake Saffel shot an 81 on Tuesday and closed with a 156, which tied for 52nd.

Individual player Finn Nelson rebounded from a rough Monday with a 79 on Tuesday and finished tied for 75th at 172.

Oklahoma State’s Tiger Christensen won the individual title with a 6-under 138.

The Blue Dragons will next be in action at the TankLogix Intercollegiate on March 15-16 in Midland, Texas.

Led by freshman Mya Williams, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team had several members earn spots and win individual awards on the 2022 Division I All-Jayhawk Conference/All-Region VI teams released on Monday.

Williams was named the KJCCC’s co-Player of the Year, as well as the league’s Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-league/all-region selection.

Head coach John Ontjes was named the league’s 2022 Coach of the year. Sophomore Mele Kailahi was named the co-Newcomer of the year and a third-team all-league/region selection. Sophomore Tor’e Alford was a second-team player and sophomore Kalyn Ervin was named the to the KJCCC’s All-Defensive Team.

MYA WILLIAMS – Player of the Year; Freshman of the Year; 1st-Team Selection

Williams, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard from Waxahachie, Texas, is the first Blue Dragon women’s basketball Player of the Year since Abby Ogle in 2020. She is the first Blue Dragon to earn league Freshman of the Year honors since Jada Mickens in 2018.

Williams is Hutchinson’s seventh league Player of the Year and sixth Freshman of the Year.

Williams was the leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference this season at 18.8 points per game. Her 622 points this season are a Blue Dragon freshman record and ranks third on the Blue Dragon single-season scoring list.

Williams reached double figures in 31 of 33 games, including 12 games of 20 or more points. Williams had a career-high of 37 points against Colby on February 12. That mark tied for the fifth most in team single-game history. Williams was 12 of 16 shooting overall, going 7 of 8 from 3-point range against the Trojans.

Williams had seven games of four or more 3-pointers – she hit 81 points and shot 38.7 percent from 3-point range. Twice Williams reached seven 3-pointers in a game against Howard and Colby. Her 81 3-pointers this season are currently ninth most in single season history and are fourth most on the Blue Dragon freshman list.

For the season, Williams is shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and 85.2 percent from the free-throw line. Her 139 made free throws lead the KJCCC and rank second on the Blue Dragon freshman list and sixth on the single-season list.

Three times this season, Williams was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week. She earned NJCAA National Player of the Week honors after her 37-point performance against Colby.

The Blue Dragons have now won nine conference titles and seven Region VI Titles under Ontjes.The Blue Dragons are 28-5 this season, the 28 wins tie for the ninth most in team history.With the regional title, the Blue Dragon coach will guide the Blue Dragons into the NJCAA national tournament for the first time since 2019 and for the ninth time in his tenure with the Blue Dragons.Along the way this season, Ontjes reached a pair of milestones in his Blue Dragon career. Ontjes reached 400 coaching wins after a 67-43 win over Howard College on November 13. Also this season, Ontjes moved up two spots Craig Brookover and Jim Littell into second place on the all-time Jayhawk Conference and Region VI coaching wins’ list. Ontjes is now 422-87 with the Blue Dragons.MELE KAILAHI – Co-Newcomer of the Year; 3rd-Team SelectionOne of the players forced to play out of position this season, Kailahi had a superb season doing a little bit of everything.Kailahi, a 5-9 third-year sophomore from East Palo Alto, California, came to Hutchinson after two years at McLennan Community College in Texas.Kailahi averaged 11.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game this season. She shot 48.3 percent overall and was a 3-point threat with 33 3-pointers, shooting 39.3 percent from behind the arc. She shoots 85.2 percent from the free-throw line, which is the 10th-best season free-throw mark in Blue Dragon single-season history.Kailahi had 13 games scoring in double figures with a career-high 26 points against Cloud County on November 20. Kailahi tied a single-game record for free throws hitting 16 of 17 shots from the foul line.Kailahi posted eight double-doubles this season. She had six games of 12 or more rebounds, including a career-high 16 rebounds against Seward county on January 8.Twice this season, Kailahi was named the KJCCC Player of the Week. Kailahi shares the Newcomer of the Year award with Barton’s Jenny Nkem Womsi.TOR’E ALFORD – 2nd-Team SelectionAlford, a third-year sophomore from Derby, has the rare distinction of being a three-time all-conference player. Last season, Alford was a first-team all-KJCCC selection. She was honorable mention in her true freshman season of 2020.Now in the top 10 of three different career categories, Alford averaged 13.1 points per game this season while shooting 42.4 percent overall and 37.0 percent from 3-point range. Along with Kailahi and Williams, Alford is also shooting better than 80 percent from the free-throw line at 85.2 percent.Alford tied a career high with 26 points in a Region VI Tournament semifinal victory over Seward County last Friday. She added a career-high 14 rebounds. Alford had a season-high 10 assists against Barton on January 26.Alford is sixth in career 3-pointers (159), sixth in career assists (329) and sixth in career scoring (996).KAYLYN ERVIN – KJCCC All-Defensive TeamFrom Day 1 this season, Ervin has provided the Blue Dragons a steady defensive presence on the floor.Ervin, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Indianapolis, had three big steals in in the Region VI Tournament Championship Game against Barton. More than that, Ervin had an ability to limit the opposing player she was defending in earning a spot on the league’s All-Defensive Team.This season, Ervin averaged 10.1 points per game and hit 52 3-pointers for the season. She gave up some offensive opportunities to make sure the defensive end of the floor was taken care of. The Blue Dragons were once again among the league leaders in defensive scoring average at 58.2 points per game.Joining Ervin on the All-Defensive Team are Garden City’s&nbsp;Britney Mapang, Independence’s Delani Harris, Seward County’s Sierra Lynch and Colby’s Akinsola Oluwabukola.
