🏀 WSU gets first 2025 MBB commit

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge got shut out 5-0 by the Tulsa Drillers at Riverfront Stadium. After the win, The Wind Surge officially yielded the Propellor Series to the Drillers with the final three games of the season remaining.

Cory Lewis&nbsp;averaged one strikeout per frame through six in his 13th start of the season with Wichita. He’s reached that amount in seven of his last nine starts at the Double-A level.

Bubba Alleyne connected on a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning, his second this week and sixth of the season, to right field. He’s homered from both sides of the plate at Riverfront Stadium in the final week of the regular season.

Tulsa tallied four more runs on a trio of singles two innings later to push ahead to a 5-0 advantage.

All that the Wind Surge managed at the plate was a knock by&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;back in the second inning. Drillers pitching combined to retire the final 21 hitters en route to their third straight victory.

Lewis takes the loss to drop to 2-6 on the season. In six innings, he surrendered one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

WICHITA, Kan. --&nbsp;Wichita State Athletics has announced details for this year&apos;s Shocker Madness event set for Saturday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m., inside Charles Koch Arena. This year&apos;s Shocker Madness event once again serves as the culmination of Wichita State&apos;s&nbsp;<a contenteditable="false" href="https://www.wichita.edu/student_life/seal/shocktoberfest/" title="https://www.wichita.edu/student_life/seal/shocktoberfest/" style="text-align: start;color: rgb(70, 120, 134);font-size: 14.6667px;">Shocktoberfest</a>&nbsp;homecoming week. The season tip-off event will include the addition of a Brew Garden &amp; Fan Fest outside of Charles Koch Arena from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. through a partnership with the Wichita State University Foundation &amp; Alumni Engagement Office. The Brew Garden &amp; Fan Fest&nbsp;will feature music provided by DJ Carbon, food trucks, local vendors serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, a massive LED screen showing featured college football games, a pep rally with Shocker Sound Machine and WSU spirit squads and other&nbsp;tailgate activities in a family-friendly atmosphere. The men&apos;s and women&apos;s basketball teams will also sign autographs at the event from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend the Brew Garden &amp; Fan Fest. Food and beverage is available for purchase at each vendor&apos;s stand. Fans must be 21+ to drink. At 6:30 p.m., Shocker Madness will begin inside the arena. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The NFL averaged 21.0 million viewers per game during the league’s opening week, making it the most-watched Week 1 on record.

The league and Nielsen said Wednesday morning that the per-game average on TV and digital platforms was a 12% increase over last year. Nielsen began electronic measurement of viewing in 1988.

All told, 123 million people saw at least part of one game, its highest total for an opening week since 2019.

“A great start with the viewership. It was great to be back and a lot to be excited about,” said Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vice president of media distribution. 

NBC had the most-watched game, with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ravens-chiefs-score-e11de910772704671858be9565d1aa10">defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City’s 27-20 victory over Baltimore in last Thursday’s opener</a>&nbsp;averaging 29.2 million on TV and digital. It was NBC’s second-largest regular season game since 2006, when it acquired the “Sunday Night Football” package. The Sunday night game between Detroit and the Los Angeles Rams, which the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-rams-score-montgomery-stafford-8dce062f6543a494b6cd18e39ec35f60">Lions won 26-20 in overtime</a>, averaged 22.7 million, a 3% jump from last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was the second-most watched live event in Peacock’s four-year history, behind last season’s AFC wild card round game between Kansas City and Miami.

“I think the numbers even exceeded our expectations. Brazil was great and the game was an exciting one,” Schroeder said. “On a new night and window, I think that was a phenomenal start for us.”

“Monday Night Football” on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+ averaged 20.4 million for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-49ers-rodgers-score-756aa152efe4dd1b84990ea6a57112e6">San Francisco’s 32-19 win over the New York Jets</a>&nbsp;despite most DirecTV customers not being able to receive it due to its carriage dispute with Disney (the only way they could watch it is if their ABC affiliate was not owned by Disney, which was not the case for DirecTV customers in New York and San Francisco).

The average was down from the 22.7 million for last year’s opener between the Jets and Buffalo.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sophomore forward Haley Rogers had a five-point game and sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Edwards had a three-point effort while the Blue Dragon defense dominated as the No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team authored a 3-0 KJCCC victory over Coffeyville on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons improve to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 (10 points) in conference play. Coffeyville dropped to 0-5 and 0-4. Hutchinson plays a key early-season road match at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Barton in Great Bend.

Hutchinson dominated possession for the entire match, hardly letting the Red Ravens anywhere near their offensive zone. The Blue Dragons cast 35 total shots. The Dragons had a season-high 17 shots on goal. The Dragons created 13 corner kicks Coffeyville goalkeeper Rose Forero Calabuig had an opponent-high 13 saves.

Coffeyville had no shots on goal in the match and just two shot attempts overall. That’s the 52nd time in Blue Dragon history they have held an opponent without a shot on goal.

Rogers led the Blue Dragons offensively with two goals and an assist. This was Rogers’ second multi-goal game and third game with five or more points this season.

Edwards had a goal and an assist for her second multi-point game of the season. Edwards has at least one point in 5 of 6 matches this season.

Rogers and Edwards are tied for the team lead with six goals each.

Sophomore forward Katharina Marx had her team-high sixth assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Marina Lopez (1-0-1) earned her first career shutout and the second shutout by the Blue Dragons this season.

The Blue Dragons scored their fourth goal of the season directly off a corner kick. Rogers delivered a perfect corner from the right of the goal to the left post that Edwards headed in for a 1-0 lead with 35:38 remaining in the opening half.

The Blue Dragon sophomore duo switched places for the second goal. Edwards’ shot was saved by Forero Calabuig, but the loose ball went right to Rogers, who hammered her shot home from 10 yards out into the open net for a 2-0 lead with 14:07 to play in the opening half.

The lone Dragon tally of the second half started with Marx making a relentless run to the goal from the right side. She fired a shot that deflected to Rogers, who scored from 12 yards out to give the Blue Dragons a 3-0 lead with 34:32 remaining in the second half.

The Blue Dragons won their fourth match in a row over Coffeyville and now lead the all-time series 18-5.

Freshman setter Ellie Suber finished with 20 assists. Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 18 assists.

Defensively, freshman Addy Foster finished with 18 digs. Foster added two ace serves. Freshman defensive specialist Siani Sanchez had 10 digs.

At the net, sophomore middle McKenzie Murphy had five total blocks. Sophomore middle Precious Johnson had three blocks.

Julia Braziel had 20 kills to lead Garden City.

Reno County Coaches Corner reaches milestone

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge lost 5-3 to the Tulsa Drillers at Riverfront Stadium. The Drillers scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning, which was enough despite a pair scoring for Wichita in the ninth.

Tulsa batted around and plated five runs in the top of the fourth as their first five hitters to come to the plate came across in the frame on five hits.

Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;homered for the second consecutive game, a solo shot, to left field in the home half of the fourth to provide Wichita’s first run on the team’s first hit.

The Wind Surge loaded and stranded the bases after the stretch in the seventh and entered the bottom of the ninth in a continued 5-1 deficit.

Alex Isola&nbsp;brought around Rosario on a one-out double to left field.&nbsp;Aaron Sabato&nbsp;singled him Isola in the next at-bat to bring the tying run to the plate with a 5-3 score and two outs to work with. Both of the following hitters ran into Antonio Knowles, who finished the game for the Drillers with their second straight win.

Christian MacLeod&nbsp;drops to 1-2 with Wichita after receiving the loss. Over four innings, he gave up five earned runs on six hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a game-ending infield single with one out in the 11th inning and the New York Yankees outlasted the Kansas City Royals for a 4-3 victory Wednesday night.

Juan Soto launched a go-ahead homer in the sixth for the Yankees, who increased their advantage in the AL East to 1 1/2 games over Baltimore. New York has held the lead since Aug. 21 but hasn't led by more than two games during that stretch.

Shortly before Chisholm came through, the Orioles lost 5-3 in 10 innings at Fenway Park when Tyler O’Neill hit a walk-off homer for Boston.

Chisholm came up with runners on first and third after Kris Bubic (0-1) intentionally walked Aaron Judge following a groundout by Soto that sent automatic runner Jon Berti from second base to third.

With the infield playing in, Judge advanced to second on defensive indifference and Chisolm slapped a 2-1 slider toward shortstop. Bobby Witt Jr. made a diving stop on his backhand, but an off-balance throw from his knees was wide of the plate. Berti, who was pinch running, scored easily with a headfirst slide.

“Honestly, I was looking for a pitch that I could get through a hole or get to the outfield to score anybody on third base,” Chisholm said. “I was willing to pass the baton if I didn’t get a pitch to hit.”

Chisholm batted cleanup for the second time since being acquired from the Miami Marlins on July 27. It was his first career walk-off hit and he was doused in water during the celebration while getting mobbed by teammates near second base.

Luke Weaver (5-3) struck out three in 1 2/3 hitless innings for the win.

New York took two of three in a series between playoff contenders. Kansas City fell 4 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central but holds the league’s second wild card by 1 1/2 games over Minnesota.

“This is a big series win for us against a really good club over there that threw a lot of good pitching at us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

The teams traded runs in the 10th. Royals pinch-runner Darion Blanco stole third base and scored on Jake Cousins’ wild pitch. In the bottom half, pinch-hitter Austin Wells tied it with a sacrifice fly.

“It was a tense game,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “It was tight. It was well pitched on both sides.”

Soto hit a two-run homer off Cole Ragans to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead, two pitches after fouling a ball off his right ankle in the sixth. The slugger doubled over in pain, but stayed in the game after getting checked by head athletic trainer Tim Lentych. Soto fouled off another pitch off before sending a 402-foot drive to right field.

“You really get mad when you hit yourself,” Soto said. “It’s just the way it goes. I’m not mad at the pitcher or anything. Just mad at myself, but when you come through like that, it just feels a little relief.”

Soto said he felt the pain when he homered but was feeling better after the game.

“He’s got that theatric thing down pretty good here,” Boone said.

Salvador Perez hit a tying sacrifice fly off Clay Holmes in the seventh and started an impressive double play to end the bottom half.

With runners on first and second, Jose Trevino hit a high chopper to the first baseman and Perez reached to barely tag Trevino on the back of his jersey. Perez then pivoted quickly and made a strong throw to catcher Freddy Fermin, cutting down Anthony Volpe at the plate.

Kansas City challenged the safe call at first, which was overturned following a brief replay review.

Ragans allowed two runs and three hits in six innings. He struck out seven and moved ahead of Detroit lefty Tarik Skubal for the American League lead in strikeouts.

“I don’t think that they’re any better than us,” Ragans said. “We believe in ourselves. I think we’re a good team. We’re a playoff team. They’re a good team, they’re a playoff team. It’s a good matchup, it was a good three games.”

Yankees rookie Luis Gil permitted one run and five hits over five innings in his second start following a stint on the injured list due to a back injury.

Michael Massey homered in the fourth against Gil, who struck out MJ Melendez with two on to end the fifth.

Royals: RHP Michael Lorenzen (strained left hamstring) will make his next minor league rehab start this weekend and could return to the rotation next week. Lorenzen threw 38 pitches over 1 2/3 shaky innings Tuesday night for Double-A Northwest Arkansas and felt fine afterward, Quatraro said.

Royals: Had not announced a starter for the opener of a three-game series at Pittsburgh on Friday. RHP Luis Ortiz (6-5, 3.26 ERA) will pitch for the Pirates.

Yankees: LHP Nestor Cortes (9-10, 3.97 ERA) opposes Boston RHP Cooper Criswell (6-4, 4.11) in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night.

Both the KU women&apos;s and men&apos;s basketball scrimmages will be streamed on ESPN+, KUAthletics.com and Facebook Watch through the Kansas Jayhawks Facebook page. Additionally, due to extenuating circumstances, Kansas Athletics has announced a new musical act to cap the night.

Grammy Award winning, producer, DJ and rapper Lil Jon will now headline the event. The five-time Grammy nominee has amassed eight number one singles on Billboard&apos;s Rhythmic chart and several Billboard Hot 100 hit singles, including &quot;Turn Down for What,&quot; which earned platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America and passed the milestone of one billion views on YouTube. His hit single, &quot;Yeah!&quot; won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance in 2005.

Late Night in the Phog is set for Friday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. CT, inside historic Allen Fieldhouse, which is celebrating its 70th&nbsp;season in 2024-25 and will debut the second phase of significant building upgrades that totaled more than $50 million.&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/news/2024/7/11/mens-basketball-season-tickets-celebrating-the-70th-season-of-allen-fieldhouse-now-on-sale.aspx" style="text-align: start;color: rgb(0, 81, 186);background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);font-size: 16px;">As detailed here</a>, Allen Fieldhouse renovations are nearing completion, and fans will notice new audio and videoboards within the venue. Patrons will also experience new amenities throughout the building on every level, including elevated concessions options from new concessions partner, Oakview Group.&nbsp;

Student gates will open at 5:15 p.m., while gates for the general public will open at 5:30 p.m. For broadcast purposes, the women&apos;s scrimmage will begin at approximately 7:00 p.m., while the men will start at 7:55 p.m. Unfortunately, due to copyright music and artist contracts, only the scrimmages will be broadcast.
Late Night will continue to be a free event for fans, however, like the last two years, tickets will need to be claimed online in advance. All seating outside of the student section will be reserved. Williams Education Fund members will have preferred access to a limited number of reserved seats based on priority within the Williams Education Fund. All other inventory and unclaimed Williams Education Fund inventory will be made available to the public. Students will also have to claim a ticket online. Sports Combo holders will have access first for three days, and then general students will have a chance to claim tickets, based on availability.
Students will have two options during the claim process.

Fans are once again encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which Kansas Athletics will donate to Just Food of Douglas County who also supports the Campus Cupboard benefitting KU students. Non-perishable food and monetary donations supporting Just Food will be accepted throughout the day at Phog Fest and at all entrances to Allen Fieldhouse. Just Foods serves on average 250-450 households per week.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge narrowly dropped a 5-4 series opener to the Tulsa Drillers at Riverfront Stadium. Minnesota’s top prospect,&nbsp;Walker Jenkins, made his Double-A debut as the leadoff-hitting centerfielder in the final Tuesday game of the season.

Bubba Alleyne left the yard out to left field on the first pitch he saw in the top of the third for a 1-0 Drillers lead.&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;responded with an opposite-field run-scoring single to right field in the home half of that frame.

A second Tulsa run came across on an infield error to start the fourth, and another equalizer followed after&nbsp;Jorel Ortega&nbsp;grounded a base hit up the middle to score&nbsp;Andrew Cossetti&nbsp;from second base.

Ross doubled home&nbsp;Kyler Fedko&nbsp;in the bottom of the sixth to put Wichita ahead 3-2, later finishing the night 3-for-4 out of the nine spot in the lineup.

NFL investigating lawsuit filed against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, accused of sexual assault

CLEVELAND (AP) — The NFL said it is investigating the latest civil lawsuit filed against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson to determine if he violated the league's personal conduct policy. On Monday, a woman in Texas accused Watson of sexual assault in 2020 while he played for Houston. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is reviewing the complaint. In the lawsuit, the woman alleges Watson forced himself on her sexually during an incident at her apartment. Watson was suspended 11 games by the league in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions. The Browns traded five draft picks for the three-time Pro Bowler in 2022.

Mauricio Pochettino hired to succeed Gregg Berhalter as US men's national team coach

Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has been hired to succeed Gregg Berhalter as U.S. men's national team coach, 21 months before the Americans host the 2026 World Cup. A 52-year-old Argentine, Pochettino became the 10th U.S. coach in 14 years and its first foreign-born leader since Jurgen Klinsmann from 2011-16. Pochettino has coached Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, winning a 2022 Ligue 1 title. Pochettino had been in negotiations since mid-August. Matt Crocker, the USSF's sporting director in charge of the search, was Southampton's academy director when Pochettino started at that club.

NBA expands permissible scope of coach's challenge reviews on some out-of-bounds plays

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has expanded the permissible scope of coach's challenge reviews on some out-of-bounds plays, saying Tuesday that if a foul should have been called on the play it now can be assessed shortly after the fact. The league's Board of Governors approved the move at its meeting in New York, after it was unanimously recommended by the league's competition committee last week. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to speak about the meeting later Tuesday. The change will take effect this season.

Phils' Schwarber sets MLB mark with 14th leadoff HR of the season before leaving with elbow injury

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber set the MLB single-season record with his 14th leadoff home run Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays before being removed from the game in the fourth inning due to a hyperextended left elbow. Schwarber sent a 1-0 fastball from Rays starter Taj Bradley 437 feet to center field, moving ahead of Alfonso Soriano, who had 13 leadoff homers in 2003 with the New York Yankees. Auburn QB Thorne says angry bettors sent him Venmo requests after loss

PHOENIX (AP) — Veteran stars Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer will rejoin the Texas Rangers' pitching rotation later this week after both had an extended absence due to injuries. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that deGrom will pitch on Friday and Scherzer on Saturday. Texas is still hanging on the fringe of the AL playoff race, but is six games back for the final wild-card spot. The 36-year-old DeGrom will be making his season debut after missing more than a year because of Tommy John surgery. Scherzer — a three-time Cy Young winner — hasn't pitched in about six weeks because of a shoulder injury.

A court-appointed receiver has been seeking to collect money from Peterson as part of a judgment against the four-time All-Pro running back over a loan he failed to repay to a Pennsylvania lending company. On Monday a judge in Houston granted a request by the receiver for law enforcement to accompany him to Peterson's home in suburban Houston so he can inventory assets that can be sold off. Attorneys for Peterson did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
