COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team completed a wire-to-wire run on Tuesday and repeated as team championship at the Bent Tree Intercollegiate.
Leading by 13 strokes entering Tuesday's final round at Bent Tree Golf Club, the Blue Dragon posted a final-round 293 and closed with a 17-over-par score of 881. Hutchinson won the team championship by 18 strokes over team runner-up Iowa Western "A" Team. Dodge City and the Iowa Western "B" team tied for third at 902.
Playing as an individual, Blue Dragon sophomore Corey Scullion made a run at the Bent Tree Individual championship. After opening the tournament with a 76 on Monday morning, Scullion posted back-to-back 70s and finished second at even-par 216. Omaha University individual player Luke Stratko edged Scullion by one stroke for the individual title after shooting a 71 on Tuesday.
Scullion had three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars in his final round.
The Blue Dragons had four total golfers finish in the individual Top 10 on Tuesday.
Freshman Grant Hatzenbuehler tied for fourth after shooting a 1-over 73 in the final round and closed at 2-over 218. This is Hatzenbuehler's second-straight Top 10 finish.
Freshman Ronnie Gibb tied for sixth at 3-over 219. Gibb shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Jack Northgraves shot a 73 on Tuesday and tied for eighth at 4-over 220.
Freshman Joe Austin tied for 12th at 224 after a final round 75. Freshman Hugo Duquaine finished 33rd at 233 after a final-round 79.
Freshman individual player Matt Vearncombe shot a 76 on Tuesday to tie for 31st at 230. Vearncombe did have an eagle on the Par 5 fourth hole.
The Blue Dragons next play at the Shocker Invitational on October 5-7 at Sand Creek Station in Newton.
