KISSIMMEE, Fla. –&nbsp;Wichita State and Minnesota needed every bit of the 45 minutes played on Thanksgiving to decide a winner in the opening game of the ESPN Events Invitational, as the Shockers came out on top in overtime, 68-66.

Wichita State (6-0) will play the winner of Florida and Wake Forest tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. 

The Shockers are 6-0 for the first time since 2019 and 13th in program history.

Trailing by three in the final seconds of regulation,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/harlond-beverly/9059">Harlond Beverly</a>&nbsp;received a pass on the left wing, took one dribble to his left and cashed in a game-tying three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left.

Beverly led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/corey-washington/9068">Corey Washington</a>&nbsp;added 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 5:01 left in regulation. Washington was tasked with defending Minnesota's Dawson Garcia, who came into the game averaging better than 22.0 points per game. Washington and the Shocker defense held Garcia to just four points on 1-of-7 shooting.

After another stop on the defensive end, Wichita State made it 62-57 on a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bijan-cortes/9060">Bijan Cortes</a>&nbsp;layup.

The two teams traded baskets to then make it 64-59 and 2:21 remaining in overtime.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/9058">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;gave the Shockers a 66-62 lead a minute later, but the Gophers were not about to go down quietly. A steal and score cut it to two with 19 seconds left, leading to a Wichita State timeout. Out of the timeout, Wichita State immediately turned the ball over in the backcourt and an uncontested layup tied the game at 66 with 15 seconds to go.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/justin-hill/9069">Justin Hill</a>&nbsp;dribbled the length of the floor and got past his defender, forcing a foul with just 4 seconds left. Hill would convert both free throws to go back up by two. One last chance for Minnesota saw Brennan Rigsby get a double-pump three-pointer off just underneath the outstretched arms of Ballard. The ball hit every part of the rim before falling off, allowing all of Shocker Nation to exhale.

Wichita State held Minnesota to 3-of-23 shooting from beyond the arc. The Gophers were able to grab 13 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Shockers by four. Both teams finished with 12 turnovers, but Minnesota outscored Wichita State 18-8 in points off turnovers.

The Shockers took a one-point lead into halftime behind a low-scoring first half, 25-24. Neither team led by more than five during the entire game, while also featuring 10 ties and 10 lead changes.

Minnesota grabbed its first lead of the second half with 9:02 to go and would not trail again until overtime.

With 2:34 left in regulation, Minnesota grabbed its largest lead, 55-50. A Bell score cut it to 55-52 and then Beverly made it a one-point game with 12 seconds remaining. Following a Wichita State timeout, the Shockers immediately fouled Isaac Asuma. Asuma calmly knocked down both free throws to give the Gophers a 57-54 lead, setting the scene for Beverly's heroics.

A federal appeals court has upheld a ruling that allows a San Jose State women's volleyball team member to play in the Mountain West Conference tournament after complaints said she should be ineligible on grounds that she's transgender. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that a U.S. Magistrate in Denver was correct in allowing her to play. The magistrate and the appeals court said the players and others who sued should have filed their complaint earlier, rather than waiting until less than two weeks before the tournament was to begin to seek an emergency injunction.

Kansas center Hunter Dickinson ejected for kicking Duke's Maliq Brown in the head

Hill's tickets for careless driving and failing to wear a seat belt were dismissed after the Miami-Dade Police officers failed to show up for a Monday hearing. The tickets were issued after Hill was stopped outside Hard Rock Stadium for allegedly speeding before the Dolphins' season opener on Sept. 8. The stop escalated and an officer pulled Hill from the car, forced him to the ground and handcuffed him.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — For the seventh time in her career and third time this season, K-State graduate outside hitter Aliyah Carter has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Carter, a native of Dubuque, Iowa, repeats as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and sets the K-State record for most career offensive weekly honors to surpass two-time All-American Kaitlynn Pelger (2010-13). With her five Big 12 Rookie of the Week titles in 2020, Carter has received a program record 12 weekly awards, which is seventh most all-time in league history.

Last week, Carter totaled 38 points to reach career point No. 2,000 in her 129th match in a Wildcat uniform to become the first player to reach the milestone in the rally-scoring era and second overall in program history.

Against in-state rival Kansas, Carter totaled a match-high 24 kills to register her 26th career outing with 20 or more kills. She added 13 digs to complete her 33rd career double-double.

Her average of 5.00 kills per set last week led all Big 12 players, while she finished second in points per set (5.43). Now with 1,813 career kills, Carter is one of five Power 4 student-athletes with at least 1,800 kills.

The 2020 Big 12 and AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year currently ranks second in the Big 12 in six offensive categories: kills per set (4.42), total kills (429), points per set (4.79), total points (465.0), attacks per set (12.65) and total attacks (1,227). Her 12.65 attacks per set ranks sixth nationally across Division I while she currently ranks 25th overall in kills per set.

The Wildcats (10-15, 8-8 Big 12) will head west down I-70 on Wednesday afternoon to take on Colorado (12-16, 5-11 Big 12) in the first meeting between the two squads since 2010. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at the CU Events Center.

K-State will host No. 24 BYU Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Morgan Family Arena and honor six players as part of its annual Senior Day celebration. Seniors include Carter, Meg Brown, Liz Gregorski, Ella Larkin, Molly Ramsey and Izzi Szulczewski.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Dajuan Harris scored 14 points and top-ranked Kansas withstood&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-hunter-dickinson-ejected-duke-9e63ed1f2d4358893f114f38e1242d74">the ejection of star center Hunter Dickinson</a>&nbsp;to beat No. 11 Duke 75-72 in the Vegas Showdown on Tuesday night.

Dickinson, who entered the game averaging 17.8 points and 10.4 rebounds, received a fragrant-2 foul and was ejected for kicking the Blue Devils’ Maliq Brown in the head midway through the second half.

Highly touted Duke freshman Cooper Flagg took advantage of Dickinson’s absence, and the Blue Devils kept it close all the way to the buzzer.

Zeke Mayo added 12 points for Kansas (6-0), and Dickinson and AJ Storr each scored 11.

Tyrese Proctor led Duke (4-2) with 15 points, Flagg scored 13, Kon Knueppel had 11 and Sion James finished with 10.

Mayo put Kansas ahead for good when he made a jumper with 1:57 left for a 73-71 lead. Flagg hit a free throw for Duke and Rylan Griffen answered with two foul shots with 2 seconds left.

The Blue Dragons trailed Colby late in the second half, but Hutch rattled off 18 points in the final 1:38 to pick up the win and send the Sports Arena into a frenzy.

DJ Dudley was fouled after tying the game at 80 with 2.3 seconds to play. The sophomore knocked down the free throw to complete the three-point play and give Hutchinson (6-3, 2-1 KJCCC) the lead. Dudley finished with a game-high and a new career-high 29 points.

The Blue Dragons got back-to-back three-pointers knocked down by Jaquez Thornton, one coming with 14 seconds to play to pull within 77-75, and the other coming to pull Hutch within 79-78 with 8.5 seconds left.

Colby (6-3, 1-2) knocked down one of two free throw attempts with 7.4 seconds left to go up 80-78. Thornton drove 80 feet before dishing off a tough pass underneath to Dudley, who went up-and-under to convert the would-be game-winner.

The Blue Dragons were outrebounded in the win, 43-30, but still found a way.

Khalil Arnold provided a spark in the second half, scoring all 14 of his points in the final 20 minutes. Bobby Cannon had 12, while Thornton finished with 11 points and six assists.

Eternity Eguagie led the Trojans with 22 points, while Galus Meowuru M'Ella had 19.

The Blue Dragons led 22-9 after the first quarter, but that lead would grow exponentially in the second quarter.&nbsp;

Colby scored the first two points of the period, but Hutchinson scored the final 19 points in the quarter to lead 41-11 at halftime.

Hailey Jackson led the way once again for the Blue Dragons, finishing with 24 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and seventh of her career. The 14 rebounds ties her career-high. Jackson knocked down all 10 of her free throw attempts in the win.

Katie Duncan finished with a career-high 12 points, knocking down three three-point field goals. Landon Forbes and Dylan Alexander each had 10 points.

Hutchinson (9-0, 3-0 KJCCC) knocked down a season-high 11 three-point shots. HutchCC finished 16 of 19 at the foul stripe.

Colby (6-3, 1-2) was led by Jera Kruleski with eight points. The Trojans turned the ball over 23 times in the loss.

Hutchinson has now won 46 consecutive games overall, and 31 straight Jayhawk Conference games.

🏀 No. 1 HutchCC dominates Colby in Sports Arena 

DESTIN, Fla. –&nbsp;Missouri led wire-to-wire, defeating the Shockers, 85-57, in the second round of the Emerald Coast Classic Tuesday evening in Raider Arena.

Five Tigers finished in double figures, led by Ashton Judd with 22 as Missouri improved to 6-3 and Wichita State fell to 2-5.

Missouri led by as many as 17 in the first half as Wichita State struggled from the field, shooting just 7-for-25 (.280) in the half, but the Shockers hit 16 of 20 free throws, including three from Peaks in the final seconds of the half. 

Jameson shot 100 percent from the field and from the free throw line in the first half to score all nine of her points.

Coming off a comeback overtime victory on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team hopes to ride that momentum in the Blue Dragons' return to the Sports Arena after four games away from home.

The Blue Dragons (5-3, 1-1 KJCCC) will take on the Colby Trojans (6-2, 1-1 KJCCC) at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (Analyst) calling the action. Colby is 4-2 against NJCAA Division I opponent this season with a road win at Northeastern Junior College, 78-73 on November 12 in Sterling, Colorado. The Trojans opened the KJCCC season with an 80-73 victory over Independence.

The Blue Dragons are 2-1 in overtime games this season. The Dragons defeated Southwestern Christian 96-91 on November 9 at the Sports Arena. They then dropped a 94-89 overtime decision at No. 1 Barton on November 20 and then claimed the overtime win at Fort Hays Tech.

The most overtime games in one season is five set by the 2013-14 Blue Dragons. The 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2022-23 teams played four overtime games. The 2002-03, 2010-11 and 2015-16 teams all played three overtime games.

LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Kansas senior running back&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/devin-neal/1356" rel="smarttag">Devin Neal</a>&nbsp;was named the Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Tuesday, following his 287 total yards and four touchdown performance vs. No. 16 Colorado on Saturday. &nbsp; Neal carried the ball a career-high 37 times for 207 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 80 yards and another touchdown on four receptions in Kansas&apos; 37-21 victory over No. 16 Colorado on Saturday. &nbsp; Neal becomes just the second Jayhawk since 2004 to be named Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week, joining teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/jalon-daniels/1362" rel="smarttag">Jalon Daniels</a>, who earned the honor on Sept. 18, 2022, following a five-touchdown performance at Houston. &nbsp; Neal&apos;s career day vs. Colorado marked his second-career game with four total touchdowns, including his first since Nov. 31, 2021, at Texas. Neal&apos;s 207 yards marked his second-career 200-yard rushing yard performance, topped only by his 224 rushing yards set vs. No. 18 Oklahoma State on Nov. 5, 2022. &nbsp; Not only did Neal set single game milestones in the win over Colorado, but he also surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season, becoming the first player in Kansas football history to rush for more than 1,000 yards three times in his career. Neal has now rushed for 1,133 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. His yardage total is good for the sixth-highest single-season total in program history and his touchdown total is No. 4 in school history for a single season. &nbsp; Neal is also Kansas&apos; all-time leader in rushing yards (4,210), rushing touchdowns (48) and scrimmage touchdowns (52). Nationally, Neal is tied for the lead among active FBS players with 48 career rushing touchdowns, which matches the mark of Boise State&apos;s Ashton Jeanty. 🏀 Kansas Athletics and FNBO strengthen partnership with on-court branding at Allen Fieldhouse

WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame announced their latest class of inductees Monday.

Kansas’ first state baseball championship was won in 1867 by Leavenworth with the team awarded a silver baseball that today is in the Kansas State Historical Society’s vault in Topeka.&nbsp; By 1933 the sport had grown to become true a statewide event with a 32-team state tournament in Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During this depression era, the promotional genius of Hap Dumont became apparent as there were 40 teams wanting the 32 slots.&nbsp; Dumont’s staged a playoff that started three days before the state tournament.&nbsp; Mixed in was another playoff for the Wichita city championship in which Wichita Waterworks beat the Wichita Stockyards team two games to none to enter the state tournament.

About a third of the players in the state tournament were former professionals like Max Thomas, who had pitched five seasons with the Kansas City Blues and would return to the high minors to finish a 19-year minor league career.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pitching for Waterworks, Thomas stuck out 15 in his start against the Stockyards then won four more games in the tournament, five victories within 14 days.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The toughest competition for the Water team was the all-black Arkansas City Beavers, whose lineup was sprinkled with active Kansas City Monarchs.

Waterworks won the state championship in five games, winning $1,799 (equal to $41,000 today) as its prize.&nbsp; With city and state companionships in a two-week stretch, Wichita Waterworks is among the best amateur teams in Kansas’ history.

“Willie the Knuck” Ramsdell was born in tiny Williamsburg but schooled in Chanute.&nbsp; His full name was Jess Willard Ramsdell after the state’s legendary boxing champion.

Out of high school, Ramsdell pitched for the state’s Ban Johnson champion before starting his professional career in 1938.&nbsp; He then would spend four seasons in Class D in the West Texas-New Mexico League where the air was so thin, he would recall, that his curve wouldn’t break.&nbsp; When his manager suggested he take up the knuckleball, his career took off.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After six years in the minors, Ramsdell was still in Class C when World War II shut down most of minor league baseball.&nbsp; He then came to Wichita and pitched three summers for Cessna and Coleman while working defense jobs.&nbsp; After the War he returned to organized baseball and was an All-Star in the Texas League.

At age 31, Ramsdell finally made the majors, with Brooklyn.&nbsp; Over the next five years he would pitch for the Dodgers, Cincinnati and the Chicago Cubs, compiling a record of 24-39 but with an earned run average of 3.83.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1951 he lost a league-leading 17 games with Cincinnati, but in five of those the powerless Reds were shut out.&nbsp; He ended his career back in high minors including Hollywood, where he appeared in the movie “Kill the Umpire” with William Bendix.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ramsdell returned to Kansas as player-manager for the Iola Owls but quit after three weeks when his team had compiled a 2-17 record.&nbsp; He died at age 53 in Wichita and is buried in Kiowa.&nbsp; A charter member of the Sandlot Baseball Hall of Fame, he spent his post-baseball career raising cattle.

Together with his brother Bob (Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2008), Don Carlile was the driving force in making the Liberal BeeJays one of the top summer programs in the nation.

From 1955 until 1991, he held positions ranging from Chairman of the Board to General Manager of the BeeJays. His primary contribution throughout those years was working with college coaches and major league scouts to get top talent to come to Liberal.

In 1984, he received the Jack Carlile Director of the Year Award, which was named after his father. Don was an active member of the American Baseball Coaches Association for over 30 years, attending their annual meetings on a regular basis. The National Baseball Congress awarded him the first Raymond “Hap” Dumont Award for an individual in the summer of 1985.&nbsp;

In 1993, Don formed the Topeka Capitals with the assistance of Jim Callaway, then President of Southwestern Bell and a former Bee Jay.&nbsp; Carlile was the director and president of the Jayhawk league for many years.

Don was very active in the Kansas Democratic Party. In 1961, he was President of the Kansas Young Democrat Party and was also treasurer of the party for many years.&nbsp;

During his active years in Kansas politics, he worked in the successful gubernatorial campaigns for George Docking, Robert Docking, Joan Finney and Kathleen Sebelius. Governor Robert Docking appointed Don to the Water Resources Board in 1969, where he served as a director and ultimately became chairman until 1978.&nbsp;

Don was an entrepreneur and owned several businesses in Liberal. In 1991, he moved to Topeka when Governor Finney appointed him as Director of Transportation of the Kansas Corporation Commission where he served for seven years.

Don continuously championed the needs of Western Kansas’ agriculture, highways, and oil and gas industries through his various associations with national, state and local political representatives. In addition, Don made the acquaintances of four US Presidents and was active in the campaigns of Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter.

Carlile died in 2010 in Topeka at the age of 82.

A longtime administrator at Great Bend High School, Randy Wetzel worked as an NCAA Division I baseball umpire for 35 years. &nbsp; Wetzel umpired Missouri Valley Conference and Big 12 baseball. He officiated basketball in the KCAC and Jayhawk Conferences and football in the MIAA, RMAC, KCAC and Jayhawk Conferences.

Wetzel umpired the 2011 College World Series, during which he met former President George W. Bush who threw the ceremonial first pitch.

Wetzel attended Great Bend High School, Barton Community College and received degrees from St. Mary of the Plains College and Kansas State University.&nbsp; Upon graduation, Wetzel coached basketball at Ell-Saline High School in Brookville, winning a state championship in his three years. &nbsp; He then spent three years at Russell High School, followed by three years as an assistant coach for the Seward County Community College men’s basketball team. Wetzel then served as an assistant for the University of Texas-Pan American (now University of Texas Rio Grande Valley).

When he returned to Great Bend is when he got into officiating.&nbsp; Wetzel worked more than 120 Big 8/Big 12 tournament games before retiring in 2014. &nbsp; In 2018, he was elected to the Kansas Collegiate Officials Hall of Fame.&nbsp; He retired from education in 2021.

One of the most successful high school coaches in Kansas history, Dennis Hurla’s Bishop Ward team won ten state championships, including six in a row from 2003-08.&nbsp; During that time, the Cyclones won a state record 45 consecutive games.

Over a 20-year career, Hurla won 352 games, nine league titles and made 17 state appearances.&nbsp; He was named the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches 4A coach of the year in 2005 and 2007.&nbsp; The American Baseball Coaches Association named him regional coach of the year in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Hurla retired from Bishop Ward in 2016.&nbsp; The field there is now named Dennis Hurla Diamond.&nbsp; He is currently an assistant baseball coach at Kansas Christian College in Overland Park where his son Tony is the head coach.

Steve Jeltz was born in France to a military family who moved to Lawrence.&nbsp; He became a standout baseball player at Lawrence High School and the University of Kansas.

In three seasons at KU, Jeltz set the Jayhawks’ career stolen base record with 65.&nbsp; In 1980, Philadelphia drafted him in the ninth round.&nbsp; He made his debut with the Phillies in 1983 and was their regular shortstop from 1986-89.

On June 8, 1989, Jeltz hit two of his five career home runs in a game against Pittsburgh, despite not starting the game. A switch-hitter, Jeltz hit one homer from the right side of the plate and one from the left side.

In 1990, Jeltz played his last MLB season with Kansas City.

After retiring as a player, he became a bail bondsman and bounty hunter before entering the construction business.&nbsp; Jeltz is active in youth baseball and assisting military veterans.

Born in Fort Scott, Shane Dennis was a standout athlete at Uniontown High School, which did not field a baseball team.&nbsp; He was all-state in both football and basketball.&nbsp; He once scored 52 points and had 17 rebounds in a single game and set a 1A state record by scoring 90 points in the 1990 1A tournament, including 33 points in the championship game.

During the summer, Dennis pitched for an American Legion team in Fort Scott, winning 28 games over three years and striking out 418 hitters in 222 innings.

Dennis came to Wichita State in 1991 and became a midweek starter, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.66 earned run average as a freshman for a Shocker team that went to the College World Series final.

As a sophomore, Dennis won 13.&nbsp; He struggled as a junior but bounced back to go 9-2 as a senior with a 1.35 ERA.&nbsp; He was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year and first team All-American by the American Baseball coaches Association and by Collegiate Baseball.&nbsp; Dennis’s career marks for ERA, starts, strikeouts and innings pitched are ranked in the WSU top ten.

Following his senior season, Dennis was drafted in the seventh round by San Diego and pitched four seasons in the Padres organization.&nbsp; In 1996, he was the Padres minor league pitcher of the year.

In 1997, Dennis pitched the first of two seasons for the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japan Pacific League.&nbsp; He returned to the Padres organization to play his final season for Triple-A Las Vegas in 1999.

While at Wichita State, Dennis majored in radio/television journalism and served as color commentator on Shocker women’s basketball broadcasts.&nbsp; In 2001, he returned to Wichita as play-by-play voice for the Double-A Wichita Wranglers before going back to Wichita State as director of baseball operations for 12 years.

Dennis is now part of the WSU baseball broadcast team and hosts a daily sports show, The Shane Dennis Show, on a Wichita radio station.

Dennis’s father, Don, pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox and was inducted into the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.

Neil Allen was born in Kansas City and was drafted by the New York Mets out of Bishop Ward High School in the eleventh round of the&nbsp;1976 Major League Baseball draft.&nbsp; Allen made his debut with the Mets in 1979.&nbsp; He became their closer and saved 67 games over the next four years.

In 1983, Allen was traded to St. Louis for Keith Hernandez.&nbsp; The Cardinals used him as a starter that season and he went 10-6 with a 3.70 earned run average.&nbsp; In 1984, Allen returned to the bullpen and was sent to the Yankees in midseason.

Following the 1985 season, Allen was traded to the&nbsp;Chicago White Sox, who converted him back to a starter.&nbsp; The following season, Allen was 7-2 with a 3.82 ERA.&nbsp; In 1987, he returned to the Yankees and finished his major league career with Cleveland in 1989.

Over 11 major league seasons, Allen won 58 games and saved 75 with an ERA of 3.88.

Post retirement, Allen began a career as a pitching coach.&nbsp; After a brief stint in an independent league, he worked in the Toronto, Yankees and Tampa Bay organizations.&nbsp; He was bullpen coach with the Yankees in 2005 and Minnesota’s pitching coach from 2014-17.&nbsp; During that time, Allen coached Twins’ All-Star closer Glenn Perkins and up-and-coming star Jose Berrios.

The reception and banquet will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 1, at LaVela, located at 6147 E. 13th St. N., and the cost is $30 per person.

 </figure>WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame announced their latest class of inductees Monday.They include:1933 Wichita Waterworks Kansas’ first state baseball championship was won in 1867 by Leavenworth with the team awarded a silver baseball that today is in the Kansas State Historical Society’s vault in Topeka.&nbsp; By 1933 the sport had grown to become true a statewide event with a 32-team state tournament in Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;During this depression era, the promotional genius of Hap Dumont became apparent as there were 40 teams wanting the 32 slots.&nbsp; Dumont’s staged a playoff that started three days before the state tournament.&nbsp; Mixed in was another playoff for the Wichita city championship in which Wichita Waterworks beat the Wichita Stockyards team two games to none to enter the state tournament.About a third of the players in the state tournament were former professionals like Max Thomas, who had pitched five seasons with the Kansas City Blues and would return to the high minors to finish a 19-year minor league career.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pitching for Waterworks, Thomas stuck out 15 in his start against the Stockyards then won four more games in the tournament, five victories within 14 days.&nbsp;&nbsp;The toughest competition for the Water team was the all-black Arkansas City Beavers, whose lineup was sprinkled with active Kansas City Monarchs.Waterworks won the state championship in five games, winning $1,799 (equal to $41,000 today) as its prize.&nbsp; With city and state companionships in a two-week stretch, Wichita Waterworks is among the best amateur teams in Kansas’ history.Willie Ramsdell“Willie the Knuck” Ramsdell was born in tiny Williamsburg but schooled in Chanute.&nbsp; His full name was Jess Willard Ramsdell after the state’s legendary boxing champion.Out of high school, Ramsdell pitched for the state’s Ban Johnson champion before starting his professional career in 1938.&nbsp; He then would spend four seasons in Class D in the West Texas-New Mexico League where the air was so thin, he would recall, that his curve wouldn’t break.&nbsp; When his manager suggested he take up the knuckleball, his career took off.&nbsp;&nbsp;After six years in the minors, Ramsdell was still in Class C when World War II shut down most of minor league baseball.&nbsp; He then came to Wichita and pitched three summers for Cessna and Coleman while working defense jobs.&nbsp; After the War he returned to organized baseball and was an All-Star in the Texas League.At age 31, Ramsdell finally made the majors, with Brooklyn.&nbsp; Over the next five years he would pitch for the Dodgers, Cincinnati and the Chicago Cubs, compiling a record of 24-39 but with an earned run average of 3.83.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1951 he lost a league-leading 17 games with Cincinnati, but in five of those the powerless Reds were shut out.&nbsp; He ended his career back in high minors including Hollywood, where he appeared in the movie “Kill the Umpire” with William Bendix.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramsdell returned to Kansas as player-manager for the Iola Owls but quit after three weeks when his team had compiled a 2-17 record.&nbsp; He died at age 53 in Wichita and is buried in Kiowa.&nbsp; A charter member of the Sandlot Baseball Hall of Fame, he spent his post-baseball career raising cattle.Don CarlileTogether with his brother Bob (Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2008), Don Carlile was the driving force in making the Liberal BeeJays one of the top summer programs in the nation.From 1955 until 1991, he held positions ranging from Chairman of the Board to General Manager of the BeeJays. He officiated basketball in the KCAC and Jayhawk Conferences and football in the MIAA, RMAC, KCAC and Jayhawk Conferences.Wetzel umpired the 2011 College World Series, during which he met former President George W. His order also upholds the seedings and pairings in the tournament. The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by nine current players against the Mountain West Conference challenging the league's policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete poses a safety risk and is unfair.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Coaches normally don't go for it on fourth-and-1 on their own 16-yard line when they're trailing 10-7 with 2 minutes to go in the first half. However, when you're coaching against your younger brother on the opposing sideline, sometimes it is worth it to take a gamble. In the case of John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens, it ended up paying off big time. Mark Andrews' 2-yard gain on a quarterback sneak not only allowed the Ravens to continue their drive, it ended up later turning into a touchdown that gave them the lead against the Los Angeles Chargers Monday night. It also was the turning point in the Ravens' 30-23 victory that allowed John to remain unbeaten in three meetings against younger brother, Jim Harbaugh.

Pitcher Yusei Kikuchi and Los Angeles Angels agree to a $63 million, 3-year contract, AP source says

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press left-hander Yusei Kikuchi and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a $63 million, three-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal, first reported by the New York Post, was subject to a successful physical. An All-Star with Seattle in 2021, Kikuchi was 9-10 with a 4.05 ERA this year for Toronto and Houston, which acquired him on July 30. Kikuchi was 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts with the Astros. He is 41-47 with a 4.57 ERA in six seasons.

Tiger Woods to skip his holiday tournament in the Bahamas as his back heals

Tiger Woods will be going to Hero World Challenge as a tournament host only. Woods disclosed on social media channels that he won't be playing in the Bahamas. Woods had a sixth back surgery on Sept. 13 and is still recovering. The surgery was to alleviate some of the back spasms. Still to be determined is whether Woods plays the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, on Dec. 14-15. Woods says the 20-man field in the Bahamas will be filled out by Justin Thomas, Nick Dunlap and Jason Day. Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion.

Hagel tied a franchise record with five assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 shots. Ivan Ivan scored both goals for Colorado. Justus Annunen, who was pulled in the first period but returned for the third, allowed five goals on 16 shots. Alexandar Georgiev allowed three goals on 17 shots.

Former NHL player Paul Bissonnette attacked during altercation at Scottsdale steakhouse

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Former NHL player and TNT hockey analyst Paul Bissonnette was assaulted by several men during an altercation at a Scottsdale steakhouse on Sunday night. Bissonnette posted a video on X on Monday describing the incident, saying he tried to intervene when one member of the group got in the manager's face and started grabbing him after his friend was asked to leave. Bissonnette said members of the group started throwing punches in a fight that started in the restaurant, spilled into the parking lot and to a nearby store. Bissonnette said he was kicked in the head three times and took several punches while landing several blows of his own against seven men. Scottsdale police arrested six men who are accused of assault and disorderly conduct.

Rams WR Demarcus Robinson arrested on suspicion of DUI after loss to Eagles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Rams receiver Demarcus Robinson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The California Highway Patrol said Robinson was cited and released the day after he caught a touchdown pass in the Rams' 37-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. The CHP said its officers observed a white Dodge sedan driving over 100 mph at about 5:13 a.m. on the 101 freeway. The driver identified himself as Robinson, and he had "objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment," the CHP said. After his arrest, Robinson was "released to a responsible party."

An All-Star with Seattle in 2021, Kikuchi was 9-10 with a 4.05 ERA this year for Toronto and Houston, which acquired him on July 30. Kikuchi was 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts with the Astros. He is 41-47 with a 4.57 ERA in six seasons.Tiger Woods to skip his holiday tournament in the Bahamas as his back healsTiger Woods will be going to Hero World Challenge as a tournament host only. Woods disclosed on social media channels that he won't be playing in the Bahamas. Woods had a sixth back surgery on Sept. 13 and is still recovering. The surgery was to alleviate some of the back spasms. Still to be determined is whether Woods plays the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, on Dec. 14-15. The CHP said its officers observed a white Dodge sedan driving over 100 mph at about 5:13 a.m. on the 101 freeway. The driver identified himself as Robinson, and he had "objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment," the CHP said.
