Ontjes has won 502 games in his first 599 with the Dragons, which is second all-time in the KJCCC. Colby coach Darin Spence has 359 KJCCC wins, which is eighth most.
Since a 26-point loss to Dodge City on January 18, the Blue Dragons have regained their offensive stride after scoring only 41 points to the Conquistadors. In victories over Barton and Fort Hays Tech Northwest, the Blue Dragons are averaging 88.5 points per game, while shooting 45.8 percent overall and 37.5 percent from 3-point range. The Blue Dragons have hit 21 of their last 56 3-point attempts in the last two games.
Against Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Saturday at the Sports Arena, the Dragons posted the fourth-highest point total team history with the sixth-largest margin of victory in a 114-39 victory. All 11 Hutchinson players to suit up scored and six reached double figures as the Dragons shot 53.8 percent with 11 3-pointers and a season-low-tying six turnovers.
Under second-year head coach Darin Spence, Colby has already made a four-win improvement from last season. The Trojans are tied for seventh place in the KJCCC with Cloud County at 7-7. Colby fell to Coffeyville on Saturday 69-57. Former Blue Dragon Ishante Suttington had 28 points to lead the Trojans.

After two tough home losses last week, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team is on the road Wednesday in order to regain some much-needed momentum as it heads into the final third of the 2024-25 season.
The Blue Dragons (13-7, 9-5 KJCCC) travel to Northwest Kansas to meet the Colby Trojans (11-9, 6-8 KJCCC) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Colby Events Center.

Facing a two-game skid after home losses to Barton and Fort Hays Tech Northwest, the Blue Dragons are currently in fifth place in the 13-team Jayhawk Conference with a 9-5 record. The Dragons trail fourth-place Barton by one game and third-place Butler by 1.5 games.
The Blue Dragons play the two teams immediately behind them in the KJCCC standings this week. Colby is in seventh place three games behind the Blue Dragons. Independence, Saturday's Hutchinson opponent at the Sports Arena, is in sixth place 2.5 games behind the Dragons.
Both Hutchinson and Colby enter play on Wednesday on two-game losing streaks.
The Blue Dragons fell 91-86 to Barton last Wednesday before Fort Hays Tech Northwest dominated the final six minutes on Saturday in a 75-61 Blue Dragon loss, the first loss by Hutchinson of 10 or more points this season. Colby lost to Independence 104-86 and Coffeyville 83-65. The Trojans have dropped 3 of their last 4 games.
Hutchinson won a tight first meeting with Colby on November 26 at the Sports Arena.
D.J. Dudley topped off a career night with a game-winning three-point play with 2.3 seconds to play in regulation to complete a wild late-game comeback for an 81-80 win. Trailing by seven points with 2:36 remaining in the second half.
Trailing 77-72 with 23 seconds left,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/thornton_jaquez_fh4s">Jaquez Thornton</a>&nbsp;hit a long 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to pull the Dragons within 77-75. Khadir Muhammad hit two free throws for Colby with 14 seconds left for a four-point lead, but Thornton bombed away from deep again, hitting a 3-pointer with 8.5 seconds left to draw the Dragons within 79-78. The Dragons fouled Muhammad immediately and he hit 1 of 2 free throws with 7.4 seconds remaining. That set up Dudley's game-winning heroics.</div>

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Zeke Mayo scored 24 points, including a pair of clinching free throws with 3.1 seconds left, and No. 11 Kansas rallied to beat UCF 91-87 on Tuesday night to avoid its first back-to-back losses in Allen Fieldhouse in 36 years.

Hunter Dickinson added 24 points and Flory Bidunga had 10 points and 11 boards for the Jayhawks (15-5, 6-3 Big 12), who were coming off a double-overtime loss to sixth-ranked Houston.

The Knights (13-7, 4-5), who got 34 points from Keyshawn Hall and 19 from Darius Johnson, led by nine early in the second half before the Jayhawks used a 12-2 run to take their first lead since midway through the first half.

The Jayhawks were clinging to an 87-86 lead when KJ Adams, back after missing three games to a shoulder injury, made a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left. Kansas fouled Johnson at the other end and he made one of two foul shots, and Mayo then went to the line for the clinching free throws.

Kansas has not lost consecutive games at the Phog since dropping four straight under Roy Williams in 1989.

UCF lost to the Jayhawks by 51 points at home a couple of weeks ago. So the fact that the Knights were able to take Kansas to the wire in Allen Fieldhouse speaks volumes about their resiliency.

Kansas played without Dajuan Harris Jr., who hurt his ankle in practice. The Jayhawks could have used his experience, especially when their guards got into foul trouble. He's played in 159 games and had started the last 98 of them.

Adams only scored 12 points, but his free throws in the final seconds were crucial.

Kansas got 29 points from its bench. UCF got two.

UCF plays BYU on Saturday. Kansas heads to Baylor the same day.

Next up is the rare championship three-peat that hasn't been accomplished in the NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball in more than 20 years.

The most recent team in those four leagues to win three straight championships was the Los Angeles Lakers with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in the 2000-02 NBA Finals.

Only two NFL teams have ever won three straight championships with Green Bay doing it from 1929-31 when the champion was determined by regular-season record and then again in the 1965-67 seasons. Vince Lombardi's Packers won the final NFL championship before the start of the Super Bowl era in 1966 and then won the first two games between the AFL and NFL champions that determined the true kings of pro football.

Since the end of that Green Bay run, there have been seven three-peats in the four biggest North American pro sports leagues. Here's a look at those dynastic teams:

Charlie Finley's Swingin' A's dominated baseball in the early 1970s with a roster filled with big characters. Led by slugger Reggie Jackson, dominant starters Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue, the A's knocked off the Reds, Mets and Dodgers in successive seasons to join the Yankees as the only baseball franchises to win three straight titles.

Montreal dominated the NHL for decades with 23 Stanley Cups. The majority of those came in the pre-expansion Original Six era, but the Canadiens put together an impressive run in the late 1970s under coach Scotty Bowman. Led by dynamic scorer Guy LaFleur, two Cup-clinching goals by Jacque Lemaire, Hall of Fame defenseman Larry Robinson and goalie Ken Dryden, Montreal raced to four straight titles with a 48-10 record in the four postseason runs.

As soon as the Canadiens' dynastic run ended, the Islanders started one of their own as the last hockey team to win at least three straight titles. The run started with an overtime clincher by Bobby Nystrom against Philadelphia in the 1980 Stanley Cup Final and then they lost only once in three other trips to the Final.

After coming up short in back-to-back seasons against the Detroit Pistons, Michael Jordan and the Bulls broke through in the 1991 NBA Finals by beating Magic Johnson and the Lakers in five games. Chicago then dominated for most of the decade, repeating as champs in 1992 and 1993 for the NBA's first three-peat since Boston won eight straight titles from 1959-66.

After a brief step back in the 1994-95 seasons after Jordan stepped away to play baseball, the Bulls were even more dominant in their second run. Chicago won a then-record 72 regular-season games on the way to the title in 1996 and then won again the next two years before Jordan temporarily retired and the team broke up.

The Yankees had several dynastic runs in their history, winning four straight World Series from 1936-39 and then five in a row from 1949-53. But they are the only team to win three straight World Series in the free agency era. The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team is ranked No. 6 in the latest rankings released by the NJCAA on Monday afternoon.

Although the Blue Dragons went 2-0 last week, they moved down a spot in the poll.

Three KJCCC teams are in the Top 25, led by Dodge City at No. 4, Hutchinson at No. 5 and Coffeyville at No. 22. Butler is receiving votes.

HutchCC is 19-1 overall, 13-1 in the Jayhawk Conference and will travel to Colby on Wednesday to face the Trojans at 5:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcasted on flagship station Country 102.9 (KHUT-FM) and sister stations KWBW (1450-AM/98.5-FM).

LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Kansas women's basketball signee Jaliya Davis has been named a 2025 McDonald's All-American, and will participate in the McDonald's All-America game on April 1, 2025, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. &nbsp; Davis becomes the third McDonald's All-American in Kansas women's basketball history and the second to sign with the Jayhawks out of high school. KU's previous signee was Lauren Ervin, who played in the 2003 event, while Jessica Washington was selected to play in the game in 2013. Washington played two seasons at North Carolina before transferring to Kansas for the 2016-17 season. &nbsp; A 6-foot-2 forward from Leawood, Kansas, Davis is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Kansas and recently became the all-time leading scorer in the history of Blue Valley North High School. She is rated a five-star prospect and the No. 17 recruit in the country by ESPNW, becoming the highest-ranked player to sign at Kansas during Schneider's tenure. Butler had been expected to play for the Heat against the Orlando Magic on Monday night, after completing his second suspension of the month. But he was suspended for a third time basically just as the second one was ending. He was previously suspended from Miami's most recent two games after missing a team flight to Milwaukee last week. Butler has missed 15 of Miami's last 20 games, including 10 of the last 13 because of the suspensions. He is expected to miss at least five more games.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The University of Florida has cleared men's basketball coach Todd Golden following a four-month Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and stalking. The school released a statement Monday saying no evidence was found and it ended its investigation. It comes amid No. 5 Florida's best season in a decade, with the Gators winning 18 of their first 20 games. The complaint against Golden accused him of sending photos and videos of his genitalia, making unwanted sexual advances on Instagram and requesting sexual favors. The Independent Florida Alligator first reported the allegations in early November.

Surging Rockets beat the Celtics after knocking off the Cavaliers twice

BOSTON (AP) — The Houston Rockets have been one of the NBA's more surprising teams this season. After their past three games, they shouldn't shock anyone. The Rockets beat the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers twice last week before traveling to Boston and pulling out a 114-112 victory over the defending champion Celtics on Monday night. Houston is 31-14 and coach Ime Udoka says that record is "not just a fluke" more than halfway through the season.

Scheyer: Duke's Maluach OK after vomiting on court during 2nd half of win over NC State

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke coach Jon Scheyer said freshman big man Khaman Maluach was OK after vomiting on the court during the second half of Monday night's win against North Carolina State. The 7-foot-2 Maluach was standing just outside the lane near the baseline behind N.C. State's Brandon Huntley-Hatfield when he turned and was sick with 4:21 left. Maluach sat briefly on the court before laying on his back while team medical staff tended to him. Maluach was alert the entire time and eventually was helped up to walk slowly off the court before leaving the bench for the rest of the game.

Auburn, Duke top men's AP Top 25, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt make poll debuts; UConn tumbles to No. 25

Auburn is the unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll for the second consecutive week. The top five was unchanged with Duke at No. 2, followed by Iowa State, Alabama and Florida. Texas Tech and Vanderbilt are in the Top 25 for the first time this season at the expense of Michigan and West Virginia. UConn fell to No. 25 but managed to extend its poll streak to 52 consecutive weeks.

MAIZE, Kan. - The Hutch High Salthawk Girls basketball team traveled to Maize South High School to play in a game that was originally scheduled to be played on January 7th, but was postponed due to the winter storm that locked down most of Kansas that first week of January.

Maize South came out on top beating the Salthawks 46-38.

Little did the Salthawks know they would have to play the game without their leading scorer and rebounder, senior Kaia Smith. Smith was sidelined after having her wisdom teeth removed, but hopes to return to the lineup soon.

Short Smith, Hutchinson quickly allowed the 8-1 Mavericks to jump to an 11-0 lead, but for the remaining part of the game, Hutchinson played the Mavericks solid.

Midway through the first quarter, the Salthawks hit three straight baskets to pull within five at 11-6. Then trailed 15-6 at the end of the first quarter. Maize South pushed it to 23-12 at the half.

Hutch had it's biggest quarter in the fourth by scoring 18 points. Final score, Maize South 46, Hutch 38.

Senior Grace Posh led the Salthawks with 14 points. Tenley Keeton came off the bench to knock down 8, Ava Krone 7 and Lily Rodriguez 5.

Skylar Seals led Maize South with 14 including 4 three point baskets.

Hutch will now prepare to compete in the Mid-America Classic in McPherson beginning with playing Dodge City next Thursday, January 30th at 4:35pm.

Maize South will participate in the El Dorado Wildcat Tournament.

Speiser was selected to the West roster with the game being played in Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The game will be played on Tuesday, April 1, at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN2. Speiser could also be selected to participate in the Sprite Jam Fest on Monday, March 31, in either the 3-point contest or knockout game. Ryan Pressly waives no-trade clause to join the Chicago Cubs, AP source says

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are finalizing a trade for Ryan Pressly, adding the right-hander to the back end of their bullpen in their second major offseason deal with the Houston Astros. Pressly has agreed to waive his no-trade clause, according to a person familiar with the situation, and there is an agreement in place between the teams, pending a review of medical records. The Hurricane finished 13-of-21 from beyond the arc (61.9 percent). Wichita State shot 49.2 percent from the field and 7-of-15 from long range. The trio of Jared Garcia (22), Dwon Odom (17) and Keaston Willis (17) combined for 56 points. Garcia and Willis both knocked down five three-pointers apiece. That run would prove to be too much of a hole to dig out of for Wichita State, as they would not cut the deficit to single digits until the 1:19 mark. Tulsa led by as many as 17 in the second half. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 245 yards and a touchdown, ran through the Buffalo defense for two more scores, and relied on his defense at key moments to help the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Bills 32-29 on Sunday night and reach the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season.

Now, the AFC champions will try to do something no other NFL team has done: Win all three.

The Chiefs will get a familiar foe in the Eagles, whom they beat two years ago for the first title in this run. Philadelphia romped to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/commanders-eagles-score-b4f7c398625075b73f74bfe3531662e4">a 55-23 victory</a>&nbsp;over the Washington Commanders earlier Sunday to earn a shot at the champs on Feb. 9 in New Orleans.

It's the fourth time since January 2021 that the Chiefs have ended the Bills' season in the playoffs. And like all the rest, it came after a heavyweight fight between two of the top teams in the AFC, one that was tied 29-all after Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1883703300098511105">found Curtis Samuel</a>&nbsp;in the back of the end zone to set up a little more drama at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes was simply unflappable, though. He completed four consecutive passes on the ensuing possession, setting up&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1883705691783016624">Harrison Butker's go-ahead field goal</a>&nbsp;with 3:33 left and putting the Bills in another do-or-die situation in Kansas City.

Allen got their drive going by running for a first down, but his next two throws were batted at the line of scrimmage and fell incomplete. He hit Amari Cooper for a short gain on third down, and the Bills chose to go for it — they were 4 of 5 on fourth down at that point — and the Kansas City blitz forced Allen to loft up a prayer that Dalton Kincaid could not catch.

The Chiefs took over, picked up a couple of first downs and began to celebrate once again.

Kareem Hunt had a touchdown run and Xavier Worthy had six catches for 85 yards and a score for Kansas City, which became the fourth franchise to reach three consecutive Super Bowls with its ninth consecutive playoff victory.

Allen threw for 237 yards and two scores for Buffalo. James Cook ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

The Bills still have not been to the Super Bowl since a run of four straight during the 1990-93 seasons.

The Bills and Chiefs have become well acquainted over the years, meeting seven times since Kansas City beat Buffalo under the exact same circumstances — the AFC title game at Arrowhead Stadium — to reach the Super Bowl in January 2021.

Buffalo had won all four games in the regular season. Kansas City had won the three that mattered in the postseason.

And that familiarity, along with the fact that Bills coach Sean McDermott once worked for Chiefs counterpart Andy Reid, was evident as the game transpired. The Bills simply refused to let Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce beat them, like he did against the Texans in the divisional round, while Kansas City was prepared for Allen's propensity to take off and run.

It was the Chiefs who took a 21-16 lead into the locker room after a topsy-turvy first half.

Mahomes and Hunt ran for scores and Worthy had a touchdown reception as the teams traded the lead. Cook reached the end zone for Buffalo, and a spectacular touchdown catch by Mack Hollins just before halftime kept the Bills in the game.

It remained a game of inches in the second half: Cook barely reached across the goal line for a touchdown, the Chiefs stopped Allen inches shy of the marker on fourth down, Mahomes bulldozed into the end zone for a score, and the Bills answered with a 70-yard drive in which their MVP-candidate quarterback hit Samuel on fourth-and-goal to tie the game at 29-all.

Fifty-three minutes and 45 seconds had been rendered moot. Everything came down to the last 6:45 of the game.

Bills cornerback Christian Benford was carted off in the first quarter and declared out with a concussion. He had spent the week in the concussion protocol before getting cleared to play Sunday.

The Chiefs are headed to the Big Easy to face the Eagles in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. In the first game, they rallied from a 24-14 halftime deficit with Butker hitting a 27-yard field goal for the 38-35 win.

Ilia Malinin laid in the middle of the ice at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Sunday as everyone else stood in ovation.

In another stunning display of athleticism, the reigning world champion landed six of his seven planned quad jumps — including the quad axel, the jump that only Malinin has ever landed in competition — and finished with 333.31 points after his free skate to win his third consecutive national championship at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

Andrew Torgashev landed a pair of quads during his free skate and finished second with 286.49 points, while Camden Pulkinen took advantage of a sloppy free skate from Jimmy Ma to secure the bronze medal with 252.92 points.

Malinin was trying to become the first skater ever to land seven clean quads in competition, and he came close. He opened with the quad flip, easily landed his quad axel and hit his quad lutz — the second-hardest of the quads. But then came his only miscue, when Malinin fell on his quad loop, and he punched the air in mid-routine as if he was miffed at himself.

He landed three more quads, all of them leading into other jumps, and finished it all off with a crowd-pleasing backflip.

“It wasn't the perfect program that I exactly wanted, but I think I gave a good, solid start for what is working in this program,” said Malinin, who was using nationals as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming world championships in Boston.

If it had been international competition, Malinin's score would have nearly matched Nathan Chen's record of 335.30 points.

“I'm still not at my full potential yet and there's a lot bigger limit, I guess, that I can go for,” Malinin said.

Malinin went into the free skate with a record margin for nationals — 19.14 points over anyone else in the field — after a sublime short program Saturday that was even a bit tame by his standards. The self-proclaimed “Quad God” landed a quad flip and a quad lutz-triple toe loop combination but chose to skip over his quad axel for a triple axel instead.

Malinin was philosophical about it afterward, saying, “There's the pressure of trying to do (the quad axel) at every competition. People might want to see something bigger and better, but I want to make sure I am consistent.”

The 20-year-old from Fairfax, Virginia, has won eight consecutive competitions since a second-place finish at the Grand Prix de France last year. That stretch of podium perfection included his second national title, two victories at the prestigious Grand Prix Final, and a world championship that Malinin will attempt to defend on home soil in March.

It's a run that prompted Ma to vault Malinin into the same category of greatness as Chen, the retired Olympic champion.

“I don’t even think of Ilia as competition anymore because it’s not something I think I can achieve,” Ma said. “It’s just an honor to be friends and compete with two people who can be considered GOATs in their own way.”

The 23-year-old Torgashev, who was third at the Grand Prix de France, was so pumped about his performance to the symphonic suite “Scheherazade” that earned him a silver medal that he said stepping off the ice Sunday, “I ... crushed it.”

Pulkinen rounded out the podium with a second consecutive bronze medal at nationals.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team posted the sixth-largest margin of victory with the fourth-largest offensive output in program history on Saturday to run its Sports Arena winning streak to 27 games.

Six players scored in double figures while all 11 Blue Dragons to suit up scored as Hutchinson shot a season-high 55.3 percent in a 114-39 victory over Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The fifth-ranked Blue Dragons improved to 19-1 overall and 13-1 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson travels to Colby at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Colby Events Center. Fort Hays Tech Northwest fell to 1-18 overall and 1-13 in league play.

The 114 points scored was the fourth-highest total in the 51-year history of the Blue Dragon program, but only the second-highest output this season. Hutchinson scored 122 points against Neosho County in November. The Blue Dragons' 75-point margin of victory tied for the sixth largest in team history matching a 107-32 victory over the Bethany College JV on November 1, 2018.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team fought back from an early first-half deficit to lead at halftime, but Fort Hays Tech Northwest guard Chase Harris exploded in the second half and the Blue Dragons weren't able to recover.

Harris scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as the Tigers upset the No. 23-ranked Blue Dragons 75-61 at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson lost its second-straight game and fell to 13-7 overall and 9-5 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons travel to Colby at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Fort Hays Tech Northwest is now 6-12 overall and 4-10 in league play.

The Blue Dragons trailed by as many as six points in the second half, but battled back to lead 31-29 at halftime. The Tigers shot 53.3 percent in the second half and led by Harris' 19 points in the final 20 minutes, they outscored the Blue Dragons 46-30.

Freshman Bo Aldridge scored a team-high 19 points and finished with six rebounds to lead the Blue Dragons. Aldridge was 6 of 11 from the floor with two 3-pointers and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Idris Williams hit a jumper with 14:18 to play in the first half to give the Tigers a 9-4 lead. The Dragon deficit grew to five points at 11-6 after a Harris score with 13:08 to play. The Dragons went on a 7-2 run and tied the game on a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/smith_kobe_85qc">Kobe Smith</a>&nbsp;floater in the paint to tie the game at 13-13. The Dragons also tied the game at 17-all and 20-all.

The Tigers used a 7-1 run to lead 27-21 after a Marquintez Dixon jumper with 4:53 to play in the half. The Blue Dragons answered with a 7-0 run over the next 1:40, taking a 28-27 lead on a Cannon 3-pointer with 3:17 remaining in the half.

Tech Northwest led 29-28 after two Thompkins free throws with 2:06 left. Dudley answered to tie the game at 29 after a Dudley free throw and led 31-29 after a Dudley jumper with 55 seconds to go. The Dragons shot only 38.5 percent while the Tigers shot 41.7 percent in the first half, but Hutchinson led 31-29 at halftime.

The Tigers opened the second half on a 7-2 run and took a 36-33 lead on a Francisco Monreal inside hoop with 17:38 to play. The Blue Dragons never gained the lead again, but trailed from one to five points for the next 12 minutes.

Trailing by two points, the Dragons tied the game at 54-all after a huge Aldridge left-handed dunk with 5:59 remaining in the second half. The Tigers scored the next five points. Aldridge countered with a 3-pointer to pull within 59-57 with 4:41 left. Fort Hays Tech Northwest closed out the game with a 16-4 run over the final 4:03.
