EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Garrett Wilson made a dazzling one-handed 26-yard go-ahead touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter and the New York Jets snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Houston Texans 21-13. Aaron Rodgers had three touchdown passes, including another earlier one-handed score by Wilson and a 37-yard throw to recently acquired Davante Adams, and the Jets won for the first time in four games under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. It also helped make up for a Jets touchdown that wasn't when rookie Malachi Corley made a mental mistake that negated his first NFL score. Rodgers finished 22 of 32 for 211 yards. C.J. Stroud was 11 of 30 for 191 yards for the Texans.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Malachi Corley thought he scored his first NFL touchdown for the New York Jets, but the rookie wide receiver dropped the ball before he crossed the goal line. And it rolled out of the end zone. So, no touchdown, a turnover for the Jets and one huge rookie mistake. With the Jets at the Texans 19 early in the second quarter, Corley took the pitch from Aaron Rodgers and zipped down the right sideline and dropped the ball out of his right hand to celebrate. A video review showed he had not gotten into the end zone before he dropped it. So, Corley was credited with an 18-yard run and a fumble.

World Series champion Dodgers have eye on back-to-back titles with Ohtani returning to mound in 2025

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers spent big bucks to beef up their roster with the additions of Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto this season. The hard part was surviving a multitude of injuries, a gambling scandal involving Ohtani's former interpreter and challenges from their rivals. In the end, the Dodgers proved a resilient bunch and beat the New York Yankees in five games to win their eighth World Series title. Next season, Ohtani will return to being a two-way player when he takes the mound to pitch. The team has eight free agents heading into the offseason, including Clayton Kershaw who has already said he plans to return after missing the playoffs with a toe injury.

After sloppy, bitter disappointment in World Series, Yankees turn attention to keeping Juan Soto

NEW YORK (AP) — Instead of a World Series championship film, the New York Yankees season ended in a comedy of errors that left them to pursue Juan Soto without a title glow. Soto was the last player lingering in the dugout after Wednesday night's 7-6 loss in Game 5, watching the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate after New York frittered away a five-run lead. The 26-year-old free agent outfielder is likely to command a contract of at least $500 million. His market is likely to include the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers along with perhaps the Blue Jays, Cubs, Giants, Padres, Phillies and Red Sox.

Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero has a torn right oblique

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero has a torn right oblique, the team said Thursday night after he had further testing in Cleveland. President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman said Banchero will be out indefinitely and be re-evaluated in four-to-six weeks. Banchero was injured Wednesday night in the fourth quarter of Orlando's victory at Chicago. He scored a career-high 50 points against Indiana on Monday night and is averaging 29 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists in five games this season. Banchero was the first overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft. Orlando is at Cleveland on Friday night.

Alex Ovechkin scores his 858th goal and is on pace to break Wayne Gretzky's record this season

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin is now on track to break Wayne Gretzky's NHL career goals record this season. Ovechkin scored his 858th goal in the Washington Capitals' ninth game to move into a 45-goal pace. If he keeps this up, the Russian superstar would get to 895 and possibly beyond this spring. Ovechkin entered the season 42 away from breaking Gretzky's mark of 894 that long seemed unapproachable. He has five already at age 39 and is well on his way to the 19th 30-goal season. Ovechkin and the Capitals are off to their best start in nearly a decade.

Bob Costas retiring from baseball play-by-play after 42 years

NEW YORK (AP) — After 42 seasons, Bob Costas is retiring from baseball play-by-play. Costas had done games the past couple seasons for MLB Network and TBS Sports. His final games were the American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. Costas' contract with TBS expired at the end of the season, but his plans to retire from baseball play-by-play had been in the works for over a year. The Athletic was the first to report on Costas' baseball play-by-play retirement. Costas plans to address his decision at a future date.

Soto, Burnes, Buehler, Fried among 136 who become free agents with 64 more awaiting pending options

NEW YORK (AP) — Outfielder Juan Soto, pitchers Corbin Burnes, Walker Buehler and Max Fried, first baseman Pete Alonso, third baseman Alex Bregman, outfielder Anthony Santander and shortstop Willy Adames were among 136 players who became free agents. There were 64 more players with pending option decisions who could become free agents by Monday, the fifth day after the World Series. Teams and players can start discussing contract terms at 5:01 p.m. EST on Monday, after the deadline for teams to make $21.05 million qualifying offers to eligible free agents.

Angels acquire slugger Jorge Soler from Braves for starting pitcher Griffin Canning

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have acquired outfielder Jorge Soler from the Atlanta Braves in a trade for right-hander Griffin Canning. Soler has been a productive power hitter for five teams over the previous 11 major league seasons. The Cuban slugger was the MVP of the 2021 World Series with the Braves, and he also won a ring with the Chicago Cubs in 2016. He led the AL in homers with the Kansas City Royals in 2019. Canning is an Orange County native and a former second-round pick who has been part of the Angels' starting rotation for the past six years when healthy.

College athletes push for voter turnout while largely avoiding controversy as election nears

University of Montana track athlete Lily Meskers drew attention when she rejected a NIL deal to support Democrat Jon Tester in his Senate re-election bid because she doesn't agree with his votes on transgender athletes. She's the rare college athlete to speak out on politics. Many are concerned about risking potential name, image and likeness deals. Others have not figured out what matters to them yet. But many are involved in pushing voter turnout and finding other ways to get involved.

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The Halstead High School volleyball team is headed to the state tournament for the first time in 33 years, Friday, when the Dragons open pool play at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Halstead has come up short of a state bid in each of the last two seasons, falling in the sub-state title game to Cheney in 2022 and Smoky Valley in 2023. Both of those teams would eventually fall in the class 3A state title game. The Dragons are the No. 1 seed in 3A with a 38-2 record.

"The last couple of years we've been in those sub-state championships and we've been so close," head coach Diana Schutte said. "It can be daunting in our area, because no matter which way you go, the chances of going, you need to have talent, but you also kind of need a little bit of luck. It's almost a bit of relief, that finally we get this experience and we get to give these girls that work so hard year after year what they deserve. It's not only special for our girls, but also for our community."

The town of Halstead will hold a send-off for the team on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. before making the 26-mile trip west on Highway 50 to the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

"It's going to be pretty special to see everyone lined Main Street," Schutte said. "It'll be pretty neat to see the entire town and Main Street out, I hope the girls will be able to soak that all in."

The Dragons defeated rival Hesston (25-16, 25-20) in the sub-state championship game to punch the ticket to state. This comes after Halstead beat Southeast of Saline (25-14, 25-20) in the sub-state semifinal.

"I think that win against Hesston was more important to some of the town folks than it was for some of the girls," Schutte said. "Some of the community members said they wanted to go to state, but to beat Hesston to go to state felt pretty good."

The goal of making it to the state tournament was definitely on the table, but Schutte knew it was going to be tough after graduating two of its top players from last season.

"The two seniors we lost last year (Dominique Schutte, Lauren Wilson) had such a high energy and that's something you can't always coach, so I was a little concerned coming in to this season, not only losing our top hitter, but also our big energy players. I told this team that you can't just teach that, you've got to practice it, so we were at a tournament this summer and just had so much energy and the girls were meshing really well together. I thought then that we got a shot, we've got some talent, but we also have some really good energy, so that's when it kind of hit me there."

Schutte was in the stands as a spectator in 2020 and 2021 when the Halstead girls basketball team qualified for the state tournament, coached by her husband, Derek. The roles will be reversed on Friday, when Derek will be in the stands watching his wife coach with their eight kids.

"He's been so supportive," Schutte said. "I know some really great female coaches who sometimes didn't have that support to where when they have kids they're just we can't coach anymore with our family, and not one time in my career has he said he doesn't think we can do this. He has always said he's got the kids and has allowed me to do what I need to do, and not everybody has that support system like I have."

"We do a very good job of separating mom from coach," Schutte said. "When she comes home we don't even talk about volleyball, but knowing since she was little, this is a dream and every year being so close in basketball and volleyball, just the heartache. She's not just a player, it's her parents' living, so a little extra special for her and I know this has been a dream of playing in the Sports Arena. I'm so glad she gets to do it with these girls she has worked so hard with."

There are a few other family connections on this Halstead team, as well.

"We have Tess Williams and her cousin Annie Williams," Schutte said. "Their vibe on the court and on the bench is pretty funny how they go back and forth, just because their dads (Grant and Alex) are so funny, so that's been fun to watch. Then we have a set of twins with Piper and Jordy Schroeder, they're both sophomores this year. Plus, Dalaina and me, so it's kind of like a big family out there."

Halstead has several other players to keep an eye on this weekend.

"Katharine Engel is a junior and one of our outsides and she has been starting since her freshman year," Schutte said. "She is one of those that gets after it every day, and she is so undersized, like she is so much smaller than other outsides, but she is fierce and strong. Our other outside is Bailey Bernal, she is a sophomore that spent most of her offseason traveling the country to play sand volleyball, so she sees the court really well and her court sense is great. Our libero, Piper Schroeder tore her ACL the second or third game of basketball season last year. She is one of our strongest serve receivers and is freakishly fast, so she is everywhere. Daynica Euwer has adjusted to some changes and had a fantastic sub-state."

The Dragons have been focusing on things that have got them to this point in the season at practice this week.

"We've been focusing on things that we're good at," Schutte said. "We've been working a lot on communicating together, and also just our defense. The other teams in our pool are just so much bigger than us, so trying to fine tune our blocks and slowing the ball down a little bit to keep the ball alive. We're really good at out-of-system balls, which in the past we haven't done well, so just being able to get digs off of peoples hits and wearing them out."&nbsp;

Halstead has won the Central Kansas League preseason tournament, the Marion Spikefest tournament, the Canton-Galva tournament, and the Central Kansas League regular season title. The Dragons have wins over Little River (1A state qualifier), Inman (2A state qualifier) and two wins over Hoisington (3A state qualifier).

Schutte, which picked up her 400th career victory earlier this season, also led Hodgeman County to the 1A state tournament in 2010.&nbsp;

"Every division is different and I am excited to get this opportunity at Hutch," Schutte said. "I knew how 1A worked, so I'm excited to see the competition this weekend. It's going to be a bloodbath all weekend, and will be a lot of fun to be a part of."

Both of those teams would eventually fall in the class 3A state title game. The Dragons are the No. 1 seed in 3A with a 38-2 record."The last couple of years we've been in those sub-state championships and we've been so close," head coach Diana Schutte said. "It can be daunting in our area, because no matter which way you go, the chances of going, you need to have talent, but you also kind of need a little bit of luck. It's almost a bit of relief, that finally we get this experience and we get to give these girls that work so hard year after year what they deserve. It's not only special for our girls, but also for our community."The town of Halstead will hold a send-off for the team on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. before making the 26-mile trip west on Highway 50 to the Hutchinson Sports Arena."It's going to be pretty special to see everyone lined Main Street," Schutte said. "It'll be pretty neat to see the entire town and Main Street out, I hope the girls will be able to soak that all in."The Dragons defeated rival Hesston (25-16, 25-20) in the sub-state championship game to punch the ticket to state. This comes after Halstead beat Southeast of Saline (25-14, 25-20) in the sub-state semifinal."I think that win against Hesston was more important to some of the town folks than it was for some of the girls," Schutte said. "Some of the community members said they wanted to go to state, but to beat Hesston to go to state felt pretty good."The goal of making it to the state tournament was definitely on the table, but Schutte knew it was going to be tough after graduating two of its top players from last season."The two seniors we lost last year (Dominique Schutte, Lauren Wilson) had such a high energy and that's something you can't always coach, so I was a little concerned coming in to this season, not only losing our top hitter, but also our big energy players. I told this team that you can't just teach that, you've got to practice it, so we were at a tournament this summer and just had so much energy and the girls were meshing really well together. I thought then that we got a shot, we've got some talent, but we also have some really good energy, so that's when it kind of hit me there."Schutte was in the stands as a spectator in 2020 and 2021 when the Halstead girls basketball team qualified for the state tournament, coached by her husband, Derek. The roles will be reversed on Friday, when Derek will be in the stands watching his wife coach with their eight kids."He's been so supportive," Schutte said. "I know some really great female coaches who sometimes didn't have that support to where when they have kids they're just we can't coach anymore with our family, and not one time in my career has he said he doesn't think we can do this. For the third time this season, Hutchinson Community College freshman Faith Jepchirchir was named the NJCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country National Runner of the Week.

The Blue Dragon freshman became the third Blue Dragon women’s runner in program history to win the Region 6 Individual championship and lead No. 6-ranked Hutchinson to a second-straight Region 6 runner-up team finish and Jayhawk West conference championship.

Jepchirchir won her first national weekly honor after winning the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on August 30 in her Hutchinson debut. One month later, she won her second after become the first Blue Dragon women’s runner to smash the 18-minute barrier at 5,000 meters at the Chili Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The Blue Dragon freshman won the Region 6 individual title with a time of 17:08.43 on Friday.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — Libero Addy Foster had 16 digs to become the Hutchinson Community College volleyball program’s new freshman record holder for digs, but the Blue Dragons fell to the No. 8 Barton Cougars in a Jayhawk Conference match.

The Cougars had 11 service aces and rolled to a sweep of the Blue Dragons, 25-12, 25-23, 25-13 Wednesday at the Barton Gym.

The Blue Dragons dropped to 19-19 overall and 7-8 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson will close out the 2024 regular season on Saturday at Colby in a 2 p.m. match at the Colby Event Center. First-place Barton improved to 27-2 overall and 14-1 in the KJCCC.

With her first dig of the match, Foster broke the Blue Dragon freshman record for digs – formerly held by McKenzie Steele (2014) and Alissa Bautista (2019) with her 592nd dig this season.

Finishing with a team-high 16 digs, her 34th match with double-figure digs this season, Foster became the fourth Blue Dragon team program history to surpass 600 digs for a season. With 604 digs, Foster is fourth on the single-season digs list.

Atlyn Proctor and Tiana Simmons had 10 kills each to lead the Blue Dragons, who hit .080 in the match.

Proctor hit .150 on 40 attacks with three digs. Simmons hit .108 with seven digs and three block assists.

Middles Precious Johnson and McKenzie Murphy were next with three and two kills, respectively.

The Blue Dragons out-blocked Barton 6-1 with Murphy leading with four block assists.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 16 assists and nine digs.

Kassidy Nixon had 13 kills for Barton, which hit .200 for the match. Anna Wierzbicki had five service aces and Mina Kaneko had three aces.

🏐 Dragons fall in 3 to No. 8 Barton

INMAN, Kan. — For the third consecutive season, the Inman High School volleyball team is headed to the class 2A state tournament. The Teutons are 39-2 and will open play at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City as the No. 1 seed on Friday morning.

Inman has placed fourth in each of the last two state tournaments, but are hopeful the third trip will result in a state title. The Teutons will have the top-seed for the first time during this state tournament run, something that doesn't bother first-year head coach Kathy Russell.

"It's how its been all season," Russell said. "We finished league 16-0, so it seems like every team we play they play their best game with us. We are prepared for that and that is what makes the game fun, we wouldn't want it any other way. We want to earn that state title, we're going to be prepared as much as we can be. We're just going to give everything we have and that's how the girls look at things. They want to earn that state title. We wouldn't want it any other way."

The Teutons defeated Solomon (25-8, 25-4), Berean Academy (25-15, 25-18) and Wabaunsee (25-12, 25-13) in regional play. Inman then beat defending state champion, Hillsboro (25-16, 25-15), and then Moundridge (25-17, 25-17) to claim the sub-state title and punch their ticket to the state tournament.

"We had a tough road there," Russell said. "Our regional was a tough one with some tough teams in there. We just put our heads down and they played great, we were just so proud of them."

Russell is pleased with her team and how well they've performed this year.

"I am just thrilled with their progress," Russell said. "These girls are hardworking and very determined. Day one, their goal was to get back there and they really want to do well and take state. We're not done yet. They keep reminding me that they're not done yet. These last few weeks they've really just clicked and seem to be peaking at a good time and we've just been having the best time."

The Heart of America league will be well-represented in southwest Kansas this weekend.

"We're in an area where there are just so many good teams," Russell said. "We have three teams from our league that made it to state (Inman, Sedgwick, Wichita Central Christian Academy), it's just a really strong area, so we expect to play really tough teams."

The Teutons will open with fellow HOA member, Wichita Central Christian Academy on Friday morning in the pool play opener at 9:30 a.m.

"We played them at the Canton-Galva tournament," Russell said. "I know at that time they were missing one of their strongest players, so we're not taking them lightly, we know that when you get to this point, everybody is a threat and you have to respect that."

The other two teams in the Teutons' pool are the No. 4 seed Maranatha Christian Academy (37-6) out of Shawnee, and No. 5 seed Oakley (30-9).

"We've watched some tape on both of them," Russell said. "We watch a lot of game film and we really try adjust to what we're going to do and try to keep some things up our sleeves to surprise them. We're just preparing for anything, so that we can be competitive."

Russell knows that her team has state tournament experience, but getting that first match under their belt on Friday morning will relieve some of the pressure and stress.

"It sets the tone, I know our girls are going to come out on fire," Russell said. "I don't have to motivate these girls, they do it on their own and are ready to go. You want to get some wins under your belt and have a good record going into the semifinals and finals, but we're going to take it one match at a time."

Inman is led by <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/9c3f101e-bbe2-4f5f-ae09-03ca272b3436">University of Utah commit, Suttyn Harris</a>. The junior has 415 kills and is hitting .413. Junior Kenna Woods has 204 kills and is hitting .226, while sophomore Taylor Froese has 189 kills and leads the team with 504 assists. Junior Morgan Froese leads the tea with 172 blocks, nearly two per set. Junior Adi Alcala is third on the team with 305 digs.

While the Teutons are preparing for the state tournament, Russell is making sure the girls are making memories they'll remember in the future.

"We're from a small town and it's an amazing community that we're from," Russell said. "The whole community is so thrilled, we had a little parade after regionals, and they're having a pep assembly for us on Thursday. The girls have been having wonderful practices, very focused, they're just ready to go."

The Teutons are focused on making sure everything is tuned up before heading to Dodge City.

"We're a very strong offensive team," Russell said. "We're really working on our defense to balance that out. We're working a lot on serve receive. We want to be able to attack the ball right off of serve receive. We want to get teams out of system before they even get a chance to get the ball."

This will be the first-ever state tournament trip as a head coach for Russell, although she has been to state twice as an assistant at Trinity Catholic.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State High School Activities Association state volleyball championship will return to the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Friday and Saturday.

Classes 3A and 4A will be held in the Salt City, beginning on Friday with pool play.

Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs out for season after tearing right ACL

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans receiver Stefon Diggs will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee Sunday. Coach DeMeco Ryans made the announcement Tuesday, calling Diggs being out a huge loss. Diggs suffered the non-contact injury in the third quarter of Houston's win over the Colts on Sunday. He was running a route and pulled up and grabbed at his right knee before falling to the ground.

Panthers send WR Diontae Johnson, 6th-round pick to Ravens, get 5th-rounder in return

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have traded wide receiver Diontae Johnson and a sixth-round pick in 2025 to Baltimore for the Ravens' 2025 fifth-rounder. Johnson has been Carolina's leading wide receiver since being acquired in an offseason trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns. He did not play in Sunday's 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos because of a rib injury.

Yankee Stadium fans ejected after one pries ball out of Mookie Betts' glove at World Series

NEW YORK (AP) — Two fans at Yankee Stadium were ejected from Game 4 of the World Series after one pried a foul ball out of the glove of Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts on Tuesday night. Betts leaped at the wall in foul territory and initially caught Gleyber Torres' pop up in the first inning, but a fan in the first row with a gray Yankees' road jersey grabbed Betts' glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Another fan grabbed Betts' non-glove hand. Betts reacted angrily, and Torres was immediately called out on fan interference.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the Fall Classic averaged 13.64 million viewers on Fox, Fox Deportes and streaming according to early numbers by Nielsen. That beat the 13.4 million that tuned in for the Pittsburgh Steelers' 26-18 win over the New York Giants on ABC, ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN2 and streaming. The audience for Yankees-Dodgers peaked at 14.25 million from 9-9:15 p.m. EDT. It was the most-watched Game 3 since 2018, when the Dodgers' 18-inning victory over the Red Sox average 13.3 million.

The 49ers mourn the death of CB Charvarius Ward's 1-year-old daughter

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The 1-year-old daughter of San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward has died after battling heart problems since her birth. Ward posted on Instagram that his daughter, Amani Joy, died on Monday morning. Amani Joy Ward was born prematurely with Down syndrome and had open-heart surgery in April 2023. The 49ers said in a statement that the team is devastated by her death.

Pro Women's Hockey League says it could add as many as two teams for 2025-26 season

Expansion is on the table for the six-team Professional Women's Hockey League, and executives aren't placing limitations on which North American markets they'll consider in a bid to add as many as two franchises for the 2025-26 season. All North American markets are being considered, with PWHL official Amy Scheer telling The Associated Press the league has targeted more than 20 communities to be issued requests for proposals for expansion by next week. And that doesn't include additional markets that might approach the league for consideration. The happy-go-lucky Canadian who owns a spot in the Guinness record book will make basketball history when he plays for the 21st-ranked Gators this season. The cheerful 18-year-old better known as "Oli" will become the tallest to play college hoops, supplanting Kenny George of UNC Asheville (2006-08). Rioux is two inches taller than former NBA giants Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol and would actually look down on popular big men Yao Ming, Tacko Fall and Shawn Bradley.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Trinity Catholic High School cross country team has high expectations, as the Celtics prepare for the class 2A state meet on Saturday in Wamego.

Trinity Catholic finished second in 2023 behind Central Heights, but are eager to claim their first state title since 2012 and their fourth overall in program history. The other two titles came in 2000 and 2002, so if the even numbers mean anything, this is the year for the Celtics.

"Last year we were a young team, mostly sophomores and a few juniors," Trinity Catholic head coach Jarod Wannamaker said. "They ran really well last year, so I knew exactly what we had for this year. They want it, they are doing the work, they're looking into things. They're trying to make each other better and it's all about the team. People don't understand that about cross country sometimes, it's an individual sport, but when it comes to the team aspect, that's where this team thrives. They're all happy about how they each did, but they're always wanting to know how the team did."

Trinity Catholic has claimed back-to-back Heart of America league titles, plus back-to-back regional titles.

The Celtics have already competed this year against the defending state champs, Central Heights.

"They did a pretty good job against us, but I think we're kind of a different team than we were about four weeks ago," Wannamaker said. "I'm really excited to see how our guys do against them this weekend."

Wannamaker is excited about where his team is at at this point in the season.

"Overall we've got a really good and talented team that works well together," Wannamaker said. "We've had to overcome some illness and injuries, but I think we're handling it pretty well and I think we've got some kids who have done a really good job of giving themselves a goal and working towards them."

One of those goals was a record that was recently broken.

"It was a 24-year old school record broken by our junior, Jacob Lindstrom," Wannamaker said. "He ran a 15:54.7 at the Sterling Invitational. He has won the last three races we have ran, he won the Sterling Invitational, he won the HOA league and then just won the regional meet."

Jacob isn't the only Lindstrom on the team, as he is joined by his twin brother, John.

"They definitely push each other out there," Wannamaker said. "They're also their biggest fan, when one is down, the other is helping him up. They are both great athletes, but even better kids."

It's not often that you get one set of twins, let alone two on the same team.

"We also have the Pennycuff twins who are right now around our six and seven runners, but those two push each other and it's the same dynamic there," Wannamaker said. "It's really fun watching Sam and Ambrose just pick each other up when it's not there."

The Lindstrom twins have been atop of the Trinity Catholic runners the past two years.

"John was our No. 1 runner last year for most of the year," Wannamaker said. "Jacob would be on his heels, and he battled some hip issues and stuff like that, but it's kind of flipped this year. Jacob was a little upset with how his track season had gone, so I think he's really worked hard this season and has really come into his own these last three weeks especially. He's always had it in him to do it, but watching him at the Sterling meet and it clicked, then he's just been a different runner. I told him he had that dog in him and he never looked back and that's how he's been racing the last three weeks."

When the Celtics run on Saturday at the Wamego Country Club, it'll be a course they're familiar with.

"We love Wamego, it's a good course, it's a tough course," Wannamaker said. "Up until this year, that's where most of our guys had gotten their PR's. We know how to run it, we enjoy the challenge that it brings, and I'm hoping that will help us get across the finish line and help us win our fourth state championship. Regardless of how we finish on Saturday, I'm very pleased with how our guys have competed this year."

Another runner for the Celtics that has came on strong this year is junior Cameron Kiser. Kiser finished seventh in the 2A regional last week.

"He is a competitor," Wannamaker said. "I always tease him about when he was a freshman he talked about how he was doing this for basketball. I've always told people that you can be talented at running and I can coach that, but if you're competitive, I can really coach that, and I can make you better. That's where Cam is, he's one of those guys that if I tell him what we need, he will find that next level and give us that. He's got the third fastest time in school history, which he did at Sterling, he was right behind Jacob and then John was just a couple of spots behind him. Cam is definitely a competitor, a gamer, he wants to win and that's what drives him."

The 10 Celtics that will make the trip to Wamego are Malachiey Alvarez (12), Dylan Bornholdt (10), Cameron Kiser (11), Jacob Lindstrom (11), John Lindstrom (11), Sam Madden (10), Ambrose Pennycuff (11), Sam Pennycuff (11), Max Ryan (12) and Jonathan Springer (9). 

"Our top seven that will run are Jacob Lindstrom, John Lindstrom, Cam Kiser, Max Ryan, Malachiey Alvarez, Sam Pennycuff and Ambrose Pennycuff," Wannamaker said. "The other three will serve as alternates."

Trinity Catholic will head to Manhattan on Friday afternoon after a team Mass. They will then make the trip 15 miles east to Wamego on Saturday morning.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Junior Brendan Hausen led four Wildcats in double figures with a gamehigh 15 points, as Kansas State ran its home exhibition winning streak to 30 games with a 70-56 win over Division II Fort Hays State on Tuesday night before 9,526 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

Hausen was joined in double figures by senior Coleman Hawkins (13 points), sophomore Macaleab Rich (11 points) and senior David N'Guessan (10 points). N'Guessan had a near double-double with a game-high 9 rebounds.

K-State led from start to finish despite a spirited effort from Fort Hays State, which is coming off a 23-win campaign and was recently ranked No. 16 in the preseason NCAA Division II Coaches poll. The Wildcats led by as many as 20 points early in the second half before the Tigers cut the lead in half with 8:24 to play, prompting a timeout by head coach Jerome Tang.

An 8-2 spurt capped by a 3-pointer from Hawkins pushed the lead back out to 60-44 with less than 6 minutes to play and the lead never dipped below 12 points the rest of the way. Hawkins was stellar all-around in his first action as a Wildcat, adding a team-high 6 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals to go with his 13 points in nearly 32 minutes of action.

K-State scored its 70 points on 41.1 percent (23-of-56) shooting, including 28.6 percent (8-of28) from 3-point range, and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line. The team had 18 assists on 23 made field goals and posted a 42-34 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive boards.

Defensively, the Wildcats held the Tigers to 36.9 percent (24-of-65) shooting, including 25.7 percent (9-of-35) in the first half

He duplicated the feat to start thesecond half, canning his first two 3-pointers to ignite an 8-0 run and push the lead to 42-22 with 17 minutes to play. However, the Tigers wouldn't go away, as they used an 18-8 run over the next 8 minutes to cut the deficit to 52-42.Rich, who earned additional playing time with senior Max Jones out due to injury, was another bright spot down the stretch, scoring 4 of his 11 points in the last 8 minutes.
