HOUSTON (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. and Jonathan India each drove in two runs to help Michael Wacha and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 7-5 on Monday night.

Michael Massey homered as Kansas City improved to 8-2 in its last 10 games. India finished with three hits, and Witt, Vinnie Pasquantino and Kyle Isbel each had two.

Wacha (3-4) allowed two runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Carlos Estévez got three outs for his 12th save.

Massey sparked Kansas City's four-run second with a leadoff drive against rookie Ryan Gusto (3-2) for his second homer. India hit a two-out RBI single and scored on Witt's first triple of the season. Pasquantino added a run-scoring single.

The Royals added three more in the third. Drew Waters and India each hit an RBI single, and Witt drove in Waters with a sacrifice fly.

Jake Meyers had two hits and scored two runs for Houston, which had won three of four.

Zach Dezenzo hit an RBI double in the seventh for the Astros, and Jeremy Peña added a sacrifice fly. Meyers' RBI single helped his team close to 7-5 in the eighth.

Gusto allowed seven hits and walked three in 2 1/3 innings.

Jose Altuve hit a leadoff single in the ninth for Houston. But Isaac Paredes flied out, Christian Walker struck out and Yainer Diaz flied out.

Wacha entered with the least run support among starters at 1.79 runs per game. The Royals had not scored more than two runs with him on the mound in any of his eight starts.

LHP Kris Bubic (4-2, 1.69 ERA) starts on Tuesday for the Royals against LHP Framber Valdez (2-4, 3.94 ERA).

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — St. Thomas Aquinas jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, blanking Hutchinson 8-0 on Monday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Arkansas commit Lincoln Boyle and Will Ray each delivered RBI singles in the top of the first, while Ernesto Lopez drove in two with a double and Nic Sabers added another run with a single to put the Saints firmly in control early.

Boyle was dominant on the mound, tossing a seven-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts and just one walk. Cole Bleything took the loss for Hutchinson, allowing five runs on four hits while recording just one out.

Gabe Valadez provided 5 2/3 innings of relief for the Salthawks, giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Aquinas finished with 13 hits. Lopez, Ray and Westin Boyle each drove in two runs, while Lopez, Boyle, Ray, Cru Huenfeld and Brady Stewart all had multi-hit games. Defensively, the Saints were flawless in the field with no errors, and Sabers led with nine chances.

Couisnard an assistant coach.<br /><br />Mills officially announced Couisnard's hiring on Monday, May 12, 2025.<br /><br />"I've been able to follow P.J.'s journey since his high school days playing at Jack Yates in Houston to Wichita State to coaching in Texas for these past 20 years," Mills said.&nbsp;"He has made a positive impact everywhere he has been.&nbsp;He is a tremendous coach.&nbsp;More importantly, he is passionate about Wichita State. His experience and success playing for the Shockers gives him a unique perspective. He will add immediate value to our basketball program and I'm glad, after all these years as a player, that he will continue to give his talents as a coach."<br /><br />Couisnard, a Houston native, makes his return to Wichita State after a standout playing career for the Shockers from 2003-08 that included a 2006 Missouri Valley Conference title and Sweet 16 appearance. He scored more than 1,300 career points and is the only Shocker to record 1,300 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists, 98 blocks and 140 steals.<br /><br />Following his playing days at Wichita State, Couisnard returned to Houston where he built one of the more successful AAU programs, Cooz Elite. Since 2018, he has also served as the boys basketball coach at Legacy School of Sport Sciences, where he's coached several NCAA Division I prospects.<br /><br />Couisnard graduated with a bachelor's degree in general studies from Wichita State in 2008.<br /><br />His wife, Tiana Jones-Couisnard, ran track at Wichita State. He has five children: Pierre, Prince, Taliyah, Pailyn and Taylor.&nbsp;</p></div>

The Jaguars, Jets and Browns are the designated home teams for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/browns-jaguars-jets-london-1ab1da4c589d154f6a0e1873fc1938ff">three games in London</a>. The Colts are playing in Berlin, the Chargers in São Paulo, the Dolphins in Madrid and the Steelers in Dublin.

Mahomes and Josh Allen face off again in a rematch of the AFC championship game. Allen and the Bills have defeated Mahomes and the Chiefs four straight times in the regular season, but Kansas City has won all four playoff matchups between the two rivals over the past five years. The game will be played in Buffalo.

Ben Johnson leads the Bears against his former team after guiding one of the league’s most prolific offenses in Detroit. Johnson was the Lions’ offensive coordinator for three seasons. The team led the NFL in scoring in 2024, setting a franchise record with an average of 33.2 points per game.

Assuming Aaron Rodgers joins Pittsburgh, he’ll get a chance to face his former team after a contentious departure from New York. Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP in Green Bay, said he felt disrespected by Jets coach Aaron Glenn after flying from California for a face-to-face meeting only to be told minutes into the conversation that the team didn’t want him.

New Patriots&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mike-vrabel-new-england-patriots-6ccb261ca025911432bfe19226544401">coach Mike Vrabel</a>&nbsp;faces his former team in Tennessee. Vrabel was Coach of the Year with the Titans in 2021 and was fired after the 2023 season.

The matchup many fans wanted to see in the NFC championship game last season but it didn’t pan out because the Commanders knocked off the No. 1 seed on the road at Detroit. The Eagles beat the Lions 38-35 the most recent time the teams met in Week 1 of the 2022 season.

Lamar Jackson is 1-4 against Mahomes, including a home loss in the AFC championship game in January 2024. The Chiefs kicked off last season with a 27-20 victory over the Ravens after a potential game-tying TD catch by Isaiah Likely was overturned and his toe was ruled out of bounds.

Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels go head-to-head for the second straight season. The quarterbacks were drafted 1-2 in 2024. Daniels led the Commanders to a comeback win against the Bears last season on a desperation last-second TD pass. Chicago spiraled after the disappointing loss, dropping nine in a row.

The Rams were Philadelphia’s toughest playoff opponent last season. Down 28-22 with just over one minute left, Los Angeles had the ball at the Eagles 13 on third down. But Jalen Carter sacked Matthew Stafford for a 9-yard loss and then pressured him into an incomplete pass on fourth down to secure the win. The Eagles went on to rout Washington in the NFC title game and Kansas City in the Super Bowl.

🏈 Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl rematch and another Allen-Mahomes matchup are among biggest 2025 NFL games

Former Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball coach Steve McClain has joined Rick Barnes’ staff at the University of Tennessee as an assistant coach.

McClain, 62, served as head coach at Hutchinson from 1991 to 1994, leading the Blue Dragons to the NJCAA national championship in his final season.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Larson took most of the drama out of his second straight spring victory at Kansas Speedway on Sunday.

After putting his No. 5 car on the pole for Hendrick Motorsports, Larson led 221 of 267 laps, winning both stages and cruising to his third NASCAR Cup Series win of the season. He was never challenged down the stretch by second-finishing Christopher Bell — and he most certainly didn't need another last-lap pass to win at the wire&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nascar-cup-series-kansas-speedway-preview-967ee45b5ee1abcc8af0dcefebae0a4d">like he did a year ago</a>.

The margin over Chris Buescher then was 0.001 seconds, the closest in Cup Series history. It was 0.712 seconds on Sunday.

“Glad to not win by an inch this time,” Larson said with a smile. “A little safer gap.”

Larson, who also has wins at Homestead and Bristol, has finished in the top four in each of his past four Cup Series races, and now he will take that momentum to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Larson will be on track Tuesday as he begins another&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/indy500-nascar-larson-double-1a4273e6b2bc03609b29962060d9d142">shot at “the Double”</a>&nbsp;— running every lap of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day Memorial Day weekend.

Last year, he contended in the rain-delayed Indy 500 before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/indy500-nascar-larson-double-1a4273e6b2bc03609b29962060d9d142">a speeding penalty</a>&nbsp;on pit road resulted in an 18th-place finish. He then hopped a flight to Charlotte for the NASCAR race, but rain there kept him from ever completing a lap.

“It's a cool win here at Kansas,” Larson said in victory lane, “and now we'll try to execute two good weeks at Indy.”

Even though Larson spent most of a hot, sunny day at Kansas in the lead, he found himself trailing Chase Elliott early in the final stage. But when Elliott's team dropped the jack too soon before his right rear tire was on during a pit stop, Larson was able to get back to the front on the restart, and he spent the last 50 laps cruising to the checkered flag.

Bell, a three-time winner already, finished in the top three for the sixth time this season. Ryan Blaney came in third, giving Team Penske another good run after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nascar-talladega-cindric-talladega-6ed884747f625a1cd96cf9d6a7a26bea">Austin Cindric won</a>&nbsp;two weeks ago at Talladega and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nascar-texas-penske-logano-3d9d9da3488849b4bf2a3f0ed8a04b71">Joey Logano won</a>&nbsp;last week at Texas.

“I was just trying to get to the end. I know Ryan was coming on really strong there,” Bell said. “I feel like our day was kind of a product of qualifying well and having good pit stops and restarts.”

Blaney knew he was coming on strong, too, but he was left to lament what might have been.

“We were kind of running those guys down quick,” Blaney said. “A few more laps, I would have scared the 5 a bit at least.”

Chase Briscoe finished fourth and Larson's teammate Alex Bowman rounded out the top five.

Brad Keselowski looked as if he might finally have his first top-10 finish this season. He started from the rear but steadily made his way forward, and the 2012 series champion had moved into second behind Elliott when his right rear went down with 72 laps to go. Keselowski wound up in the wall, ending his hopes of contending.

“I mean, it was going to be a great day," Keselowski said. "I heard a big boom and around it went. It's unfortunate.”

Denny Hamlin also had a fast car all afternoon, but he wound up fighting a clutch problem that made pitting a nightmare. He was still running with the leaders before Keselowski's caution, when yet more clutch trouble finally ruined his day.

“Really fast again,” Hamlin said. “Just can't keep it together right now.”

There had been only one non-stage caution before Keselowski hit the wall. Cody Ware, Daniel Suarez and Ty Dillon brought out another in a wreck on the restart; Kyle Busch was bumped and spun to bring out another yellow on the next restart; and Justin Haley, Erik Jones and Bubba Wallace were involved in another wreck on a third consecutive restart.

Larson won for the 32nd time, and joined Hamlin and Busch as the only active Cup Series drivers to have led more than 10,000 laps. ... Briscoe was fourth for the fourth time this season. He has yet to finish better. ... Larson made it three straight wins for Chevrolet at Kansas Speedway. Ross Chastain won the fall race last season. ... Hamlin's streak of seven straight top-10s at Kansas ended. He finished 36th. ... Logano challenged for second late in the race before finishing ninth.

The All-Star Race is up next Sunday at North Wilkesboro, where Logano is the defending champ. There are changes to the format this year, including an optional promoter's caution flag, which could dramatically reshape the 250-lap race.

Kyle Larson wins again at Kansas, dominating for his 3rd NASCAR Cup Series win this season

&nbsp;HOUSTON --&nbsp;Wichita State took advantage of nine walks and five hit by pitches to pile up a season-high 18 runs in an 18-7 victory over Rice on Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park.

The game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Shockers (16-34, 8-16) scored in each of their final five innings, including big frames of four, five and seven runs. All nine Shockers scored a run and eight of the nine Shockers recorded a hit and an RBI.

Wichita State trailed 2-0 into the top of the fourth inning and had yet to put a runner on second base against Rice starter Tucker Alch, but exploded for four runs to seize a 4-2 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/9185">Josh Livingston</a>&nbsp;tied the game with a two-run home run for his 13th long ball of the season, then&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mauricio-millan/9186">Mauricio Millan</a>&nbsp;kicked off a career day offensively with a go-ahead, two-run single that marked the end of the day for Alch.

Rice (17-35, 10-14) snatched the lead right back with a trio of two-out runs in the bottom of the inning. Colin Robson slapped an RBI single and Blaine Brown followed by slicing a two-run homer inside the left field foul pole to put the Owls back in front, 5-4.The lead was short lived, however, as Wichita State claimed the advantage for good with a huge seven-run fifth inning. The barrage included four bases-loaded walks, one bases-loaded hit by pitch and a run-scoring wild pitch. The Shockers had just two infield singles in the inning, but used the Rice charity to build an 11-5 lead.

Shockers run rule Rice in series finale 

SPRINGDALE, Ark. —Noah Cardenas smashed a lead-off home run in the ninth to lead the Wichita Wind Surge to a 6-4 win against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.&nbsp;&nbsp; After a tie game reached the ninth inning, the Wind Surge pulled away by scoring three runs to clinch a series victory.&nbsp; teammates

Jac Caglianone tallied his Texas League-leading 37th RBI on a groundout to Jake Rucker in the bottom of the first. The next batter, Brett Squires, hit one to the berm in right field for a solo shot and a 2-0 Naturals lead. Ben Ross immediately cut the lead in half on a home run of his own, number three on the year, out to left to start the top of the second.&nbsp;

Noah Cardenas doubled to the left field wall, and Kyler Fedko came in to score from first with a head-first slide to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Tanner Schobel pushed a sacrifice fly out to left center to score Cardenas for a 3-2 Wichita lead through three and a half.&nbsp;

John Klein threw three innings of scoreless relief for Wind Surge Darren Bowen. The 6-5 righthander gave up just two hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Javier Vaz scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Wichita added a trio of runs in the top of the ninth on a homer by Cardenas, a run-scoring hit by Ricardo Olivar, and a sac fly by Rubel Cespedes, 6-3 Wind Surge.

While Spencer Nivens crossed home plate on a wild pitch, Jaylen Nowlin would end the game on a swinging strikeout of Kyle Hayes for a 6-4 Wichita win.&nbsp;

After an inning and two-thirds thrown with an earned run, two walks, and three strikeouts, Nowlin earned his first win of 2025 with the Wind Surge.

The next batter, Brett Squires, hit one to the berm in right field for a solo shot and a 2-0 Naturals lead. Ben Ross immediately cut the lead in half on a home run of his own, number three on the year, out to left to start the top of the second.&nbsp;</p><p>Noah Cardenas doubled to the left field wall, and Kyler Fedko came in to score from first with a head-first slide to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Tanner Schobel pushed a sacrifice fly out to left center to score Cardenas for a 3-2 Wichita lead through three and a half.&nbsp;</p><p>John Klein threw three innings of scoreless relief for Wind Surge Darren Bowen. The 6-5 righthander gave up just two hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.</p><p>Javier Vaz scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Wichita added a trio of runs in the top of the ninth on a homer by Cardenas, a run-scoring hit by Ricardo Olivar, and a sac fly by Rubel Cespedes, 6-3 Wind Surge.</p><p>While Spencer Nivens crossed home plate on a wild pitch, Jaylen Nowlin would end the game on a swinging strikeout of Kyle Hayes for a 6-4 Wichita win.&nbsp;</p><p>After an inning and two-thirds thrown with an earned run, two walks, and three strikeouts, Nowlin earned his first win of 2025 with the Wind Surge.</p>

Royals drop series finale to Red Sox 

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College will host the NCCAA Central Region Softball Championship on Monday and Tuesday, May 12-13, at Sterling High School.

Four teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament, with Sterling College entering as the No. 1 seed. The Warriors finished the regular season 31-15 overall and 19-8 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Sterling will open the tournament against No. 4 seed Mission University of Springfield, Mo., at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Mission finished 15-35 overall and 4-16 in the American Midwest Conference.

The first game of the tournament will feature No. 2 seed Mid-America Christian University of Oklahoma City against No. 3 seed Southwestern Christian University of Bethany, Okla. First pitch is scheduled for noon Monday. Mid-America Christian went 27-18 overall and 22-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Southwestern Christian finished 28-24 and 17-19 in conference play.

The tournament champion will advance to the NCCAA Softball World Series, scheduled for May 19-21 at Oak Grove Softball Complex in Grapevine, Texas. The national event will feature an eight-team double-elimination format.

⚾ Devers’ homer boosts Giolito to first win since 2023 as Red Sox beat Royals 

SPRINGDALE, Ark. —The Wichita Wind Surge made a late comeback in their 3-1 win over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Arvest Ballpark. All of Wichita’s offensive support came in the eighth and ninth innings on the way to the team’s third straight win. 

Zeroes filled the scoreboard for most of the night. Christian MacLeod threw his longest appearance of the season, striking out three over four innings, while Hunter Owen finished with seven K’s over six innings with five hits given up for a quality start.

Jac Caglianone improved his Texas League leading RBI amount to 36 by pushing a run across on a groundout in the last of the sixth, 1-0 Naturals. 

Kala’i Rosario muscled his first triple of the season out to the wall in left center to tie the game in the top of the eighth. Rosario scampered in to score on a Kyler Fedko infield groundout to give the Wind Surge a 2-1 lead. 

After Jarret Whorff struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth, a third Wichita run came in the top of the ninth on a Tanner Schobel sacrifice fly. While the leadoff hitter Carter Jensen reached on an infield single, a double play and a groundout to Jake Rucker ended the game with a 3-1 final in favor of Wichita. 

Whorff improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, striking out three in a pair of hitless innings of relief. John Stankiewicz gave up just hit in the scoreless ninth for his second save of 2025.

Wichita rallies late for third straight victory over Northwest Arkansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Garrett Crochet allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings, Rafael Devers was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and the Boston Red Sox beat Kansas City 10-1 on Saturday night to end the Royals’ winning streak at seven.

Crochet (4-2) struck out nine and walked one. He struck out Bobby Witt Jr. with the bases loaded to end the seventh.

Trevor Story blew open a close game with a three-run homer.

Cole Ragans (2-2) took the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits through five innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

The Red Sox got to Ragans in the third. With two outs, Jarren Duran singled and scored on Devers’ double.

Sox top Royals, winning streak ends at 7 

Fans packed the grandstands under a crisp Kansas sky Friday night for “Thunder Through the Plains,” as Saltcity Racing brought roaring action to the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Sponsored by Murphy Tractor &amp; Equipment Co., Inc. and B &amp; B Hydraulics, Inc., the event delivered a full throttle evening of dirt track drama and hometown heroes claiming the checkered flag.

The IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car division kicked off the action-packed night with a fierce battle in the A Feature. Wichita’s Brian Herbert (#97) outpaced the field to claim a commanding victory, thrilling local fans with his textbook turns and late-race speed. Jeremy Huish (#88J) of Jetmore gave chase to finish a strong second, while fellow Wichitan Jeremy Campbell (#51) rounded out the podium in third, making it a stellar showing for Kansas talent.

Not to be outdone, the Dirt Super Late Models stormed the track in a heart-pounding main event. Wichita driver Tanner Mullens (#02) put on a clinic, charging to the front and holding off challenges to seize first place honors. Enid Oklahoma’s Kip Hughes (#G0) pushed hard in second, while Jake Nightingale (#3J) from Hutchinson gave the hometown crowd plenty to cheer about with a hard-earned third-place finish.

Wichita’s Brian Herbert (#97) outpaced the field to claim a commanding victory, thrilling local fans with his textbook turns and late-race speed. Jeremy Huish (#88J) of Jetmore gave chase to finish a strong second, while fellow Wichitan Jeremy Campbell (#51) rounded out the podium in third, making it a stellar showing for Kansas talent.</p><p>Not to be outdone, the Dirt Super Late Models stormed the track in a heart-pounding main event. Wichita driver Tanner Mullens (#02) put on a clinic, charging to the front and holding off challenges to seize first place honors. Enid Oklahoma’s Kip Hughes (#G0) pushed hard in second, while Jake Nightingale (#3J) from Hutchinson gave the hometown crowd plenty to cheer about with a hard-earned third-place finish.</p><figure>

Rice starter J.D. McCracken held Wichita State without a hit for the first five innings, lifting the Owls to a 9-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.

The Shockers (15-34, 7-16) fell behind 6-0 in the first four innings, allowing one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth on a three-run homer from Michael Zito. A sacrifice fly from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/9185">Josh Livingston</a>, RBI groundout from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kaleb-duncan/9419">Kaleb Duncan</a>&nbsp;and Rice throwing error pulled the Shockers back within 6-3 at the seventh inning stretch, but the Owls (17-34, 10-13) got the three runs right back in the home half of the inning on a sacrifice fly and two-out, two-run double from Aric Anderson for the final margin.

McCracken (4-4) earned the win for Rice with 7.0 strong innings, holding WSU to just three hits while striking out four. Reliever Garrett Stratton retired all six hitters he faced to close out the win.
