HOUSTON (AP) — Jeremy Peña had a season-high four hits, capped by a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, to give the Houston Astros a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

The Astros trailed by 1 when Zach Dezenzo singled with one out in the eighth and was lifted for pinch-runner Chas McCormick. Mauricio Dubón’s second double of the game dropped into the left field corner and scored McCormick, tying the game and chasing Michael Lorenzen (3-4).

Carlos Estévez took over and Peña lined his third pitch into left field, sending Dubón home and putting the Astros on top.

Josh Hader walked one in a scoreless ninth for his 10th save after Bryan King (1-0) threw a scoreless eighth for the win.

Isaac Paredes homered for a second straight game for the Astros after his shot in the ninth inning Tuesday night lifted them to the 2-1 win.

Maikel Garcia homered and doubled as the Royals built a 3-1 lead.

Dubón’s first double came with one out in the sixth and he scored on a double by Peña to get the Astros within 3-2.

Houston’s Colton Gordon allowed seven hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings in his major league debut.

Lorenzen yielded seven hits and four runs in 7 1/3 innings for the loss.

Garcia put the Royals up 1-0 with his towering home run to start the second inning. There were two outs and two on in the inning when Jonathan India then smacked an RBI double off the left field wall to make it 2-0.

The Royals had runners at first and second with two outs in the third when Jake Meyers robbed Hunter Renfroe of extra bases with a nifty catch on the track in center.

Paredes homered in the fourth before Garcia’s RBI double that bounced off second base and into the outfield pushed the lead to 3-1.

Dubón’s RBI double in the eighth that tied it and chased Lorenzen.

Peña has been great in 16 games since moving to the leadoff spot and has five doubles, three homers, 15 RBIs and 28 hits.

The No. 3-ranked Blue Dragons sit third after two round with a 4-over par score of 580. The Blue Dragons trail lead leader Midland by 10 strokes.
Midland shot a 286 in the second round and leads the tournament by one stroke at 6-under 570. Odessa, with an incredible finish over the final five holes on Wednesday, is now second at 571, shooting 283 for the single-low round. Odessa played the final five holes at 13-under par on Wednesday.

The third-place Blue Dragons posted a team score of 295 in the second round, 10 strokes higher than Tuesday's opening-round 285. Indian Hills is one stroke behind the Blue Dragons at 581 after a 293 in the second round. New Mexico Junior College shot 298 in the second round and is now fifth at 582.
Hutchinson will be paired with Midland and Odessa in the final team groups in Thursday's third round. The Dragons tee off from 12:40 to 1:20 p.m. off Hole No. 1
Box moved into the Top 2 of the individual standings on Thursday with an incredible drive on the park-4, 382-yard 15th hole. Box drove the green and was a foot short of an ace on the par-4 hole. He tapped in for an eagle-2, which is the second time in his last three rounds at Sand Creek Station Box has eagled No. 15.
Box finished with a 3-under 69 on Wednesday to move into second place with a 3-under 139. Box is three strokes behind Odessa's Adam Bresnu, who followed his opening-round 69 with a 67 in the second round. Bresnu leads at 8-under 136.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/walker_tyler_ijcw">Tyler Walker</a>&nbsp;had a roller-coaster round to finish at even-par 72. Walker carded six birdies, but they were offset by four bogeys and a double bogey. Walker birdied the final hole to finish at even par for the round. He is tied for 13th after two rounds at 1-under 143.
Freshman Corey Scullion posted 76 in the second round after a 70 in the first round on Tuesday. His only birdie came on the 11th hole. Scullion is tied for 26th at 4-over 146.

The Blue Dragons move onto a second-round elimination game in the eight-team double-elimination tournament to play No. 6-seed Kansas City (38-21) at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Should the Blue Dragons play against Kansas City, they would play again at 7 p.m. on Thursday in a third-round elimination game against the Cloud County/Coffeyville winner.

The Blue Dragons (40-20) reached the 40-win plateau for the second-straight season and for the 11th time in program history.
Mazza went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and a career single-game high five RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons on Wednesday. He also scored a pair of runs.
After a two-hit game in the opening round against Cowley, Mazza got the Blue Dragons going early with a two-run home run in the first inning. Mazza added a single in the third and then came up with the bases loaded in the fourth. Mazza ripped a three-run double as part of a five-run inning to build an 8-0 lead.
That double was Mazza's 27th of the season, which tied Thad Weber (2006) for the Blue Dragon single-season record for doubles. Mazza now has 87 hits for the season, which ties Cooper Wesslund (2024) for seventh on the single-season hits list.
The Blue Dragons out-hit the Cougars 11-4 on Wednesday.

With his fifth strikeout of the game in the fifth inning, Roehler moved past Jody Harris (1993-95) into second place on the Blue Dragon career strikeout list with 156 career strikeouts. Now 15-4 in his career, Roehler tied Craig Reed, Shawn Lewick, Kyle Simonds and Ethan Giesbrecht for fifth on the Blue Dragon career list for the fifth-most career wins in Blue Dragon history.
Leading 2-0 entering the fourth, the Blue Dragons broke the game open with a five-run inning. Hamrick singled home&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/stokes_taber_u8n0">Taber Stokes</a>&nbsp;to open the inning. Then with the bases loaded, Mazza hit his bases-loaded double. Mustow then doubled in Mazza with the fifth run of the inning for a 7-0 lead.
The Cougars got their lone run in the bottom of the fourth.
Then in the top of the seventh, Griffin led off the inning with a walk and was moved to second by an Eli Duncan sacrifice bunt. With two out, Hamrick doubled home Griffin with the ninth run to put the Dragons within range of a run-rule win.
The Cougars loaded the bases with two out against&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/flores_colin_o7x4">Colin Flores</a>, but the Dragon freshman closer induced a game-ending groundout.

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The Central Kansas League will look a little different next basketball season, as former Haven High School boys basketball coach Lonnie Paramore has accepted the same job at Halstead High School, USD 440 Halstead-Bentley announced on Wednesday.

Paramore spent the last 17 seasons at Haven High School, where he took over the Wildcats' program in 2008. He guided the Wildcats to a 19-4 record this past season, falling in the sub-state championship game to Cheney. 

While at Haven, Paramore became the winningest coach in program history. He also served as cross country coach and teaching a variety of subjects, including history, physical education, and strength and conditioning.

Prior to Haven, Paramore spent 13 years at Fairfield High School, starting in 1995. There, he held head coaching duties for boys basketball, cross country, and tennis. 

His coaching career also includes assistant stints at Sterling College and Ashland High School.

Over his 33-year coaching career, Paramore has amassed more than 400 victories and has earned multiple accolades, including Reno County Boys Basketball Coach of the Year honors in 2018 and 2020. He was inducted into the Sterling College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024.

A Sterling College graduate, Paramore had an illustrious playing career with the Warriors in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was a three-year letter winner and earned All-KCAC and NAIA All-District honors twice. A two-time team MVP, he was named the KCAC Co-Player of the Year and Sterling’s Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1990-91. When his playing career concluded, he ranked second in school history for single-game scoring (44 points), season scoring average (23.6 ppg), points scored in a season, and held records for 3-pointers made in a season (63), career field goal percentage (49.6%), and free throw percentage (81.2%). He also ranked fifth in total career points.

As a freshman, Thid captured the 2024 NJCAA national championship in the 400-meter hurdles where he set a Blue Dragon record in the event of 50.76 seconds.
This takes the second-best time in the national into Thursday's preliminary round with a time of 51.00 seconds set at the Kansas Wesleyan Coyote Classic on April 18.
Thursday's 400-meter preliminaries are scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and the finals are Saturday.
Blue Dragon 10,000-meter record holder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kiprotich_titus_hgfs">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;competes in the first of his three events on Thursday night with the men's 10,000 meters. That race has been pushed back to 9:20 p.m. because of potential heat issues. Kiprotich is ranked 10th in the nation (30:27.83) coming in and Blue Dragon freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kogo_cornelius_hf87">Cornelius Kogo</a>&nbsp;is ranked 13th (30:55.96).
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/williams_elisha_7e2c">Elisha Williams</a>&nbsp;is ranked fourth in the men's long jump enter the championships. Williams' mark of 25-3 1/2 (7.70 meters) was actually set in the NJCAA Indoor national championships, which earned him third place. Williams opens the field events for the Blue Dragons at 11 a.m.
Thrower Deisheline Mayer Scott and distance runner Jordyn Picolet lead the Blue Dragon women on Day 1.
Mayer Scott competes in the first of her three events at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Her best performance in the hammer is 143 feet, 6 inches set at the Mark A. Phillips Classic in March.
Picolet goes after the school record in the 10,000 at 8:30 p.m. at Gowans. Picolet, who owns the 5,000-meter Blue Dragon record, has the second-fastest 10,000 time of 39.46.51.

WICHITA, Kan. (May 14, 2025)&mdash;The Wichita Wind Surge triumphed 11-9 over the Arkansas Travelers at Equity Bank Park. In a back-and-forth game, the Wind Surge scored four runs in two separate innings to even the series.
Jared Sundstrom scored two on a double to left after the first three Arkansas hitters reached to load the bases against&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/connor-prielipp-687570">Connor Prielipp</a>. Prielipp struck each of the next two men out, and then a groundout to shortstop stranded two men in scoring position.
Wichita put together a four-run fourth inning on a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/tanner-schobel-802355">Tanner Schobel</a>&nbsp;single and a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/ricardo-olivar-691627">Ricardo Olivar</a>&nbsp;three-run home run over the wall in left. Olivar ties&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/kyler-fedko-693459">Kyler Fedko</a>&nbsp;for the team lead in long balls after that one with five.
Caleb Cali brought the Travelers within one on a sac fly to right field in the top of the fifth. Sundstrom followed with an RBI double into the alley between Olivar and Fedko to tie the game at 4-4 halfway through the Education Day game.

Four Travelers scored to start the eighth. Nick Raposo hit one out to deep left, then Blake Rambusch pushed a sac fly to center. An infield error plated Hogan Windish ahead of a single to left by Victor Labrada. Fedko singled one off a glove into shallow center to add one more for the Wind Surge lead at 11-9 after eight. 🥎 Hutch Post-area regional brackets revealed for Class 3A, 2-1A

(AP) —&nbsp;Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs will visit the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.

The matchup was announced on “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday, continuing the release of select&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-schedule-2025-5a121696abfc9ee9b642597e7a43b913">marquee games</a>&nbsp;ahead of the full release of the NFL schedule.

The Cowboys were part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-schedule-release-a484d952ba31c6eb80e8c5af46859ad9">first announcement</a>. They’re taking on the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to kick off the season on Sept. 4.

The Chiefs also are playing on Christmas night, when they host the AFC West rival Denver Broncos on Prime Video. The league plans a tripleheader for Dec. 25, which this year is a Thursday, with the other two games on Netflix.

Several other games already have been revealed, including six of the record&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-schedule-release-b9af9e4505a116b43a87da19db87fd59">seven international contests</a>.

The Minnesota Vikings are playing consecutive games in Ireland and Britain, facing the Pittsburgh Steelers at Croke Park in Dublin on Sept. 28 in Ireland’s first NFL regular-season game. They’ll become the first team to play two international games in two different countries when they go to London to face the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a week later on Oct. 5.

In other international games, the Broncos play the New York Jets on Oct. 12 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, the Los Angeles Rams face the Jacksonville Jaguars a week later at Wembley Stadium in London, the Atlanta Falcons take on the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 9 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin and the Washington Commanders play the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 16 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

SALINA &ndash; The Hutchinson Community College baseball team carried a one-run lead into the eighth inning on Tuesday night in the Plains District Tournament opening round.
But the fourth-seeded Cowley Tigers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the fifth-seeded Blue Dragons 2-1 at Dean Evans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons (39-20) fall to the elimination bracket where it will face No. 1 seed Barton (42-12) at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Hutchinson took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;tripled off the left-field wall and then scored on an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mustow_adam_sf8t">A.J. Mustow</a>&nbsp;groundout to first.
The Blue Dragons took that one-run lead to the eighth. Cowley was able to cash in on a leadoff hit batter and scored two runs in the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Blue Dragons were retired in order in the ninth.
The outcome spoiled a tremendous starting performance from freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/rosser_lachlan_s3z7">Lachlan Rosser</a>, who threw seven shutout innings before leaving the game in the eighth.
Rosser struck out five and walked three while allowing five hits and one earned run.
Rosser retired the first nine batters he faced and then made big pitches over the next four innings to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Rosser left runners on first and third by ending the fourth inning with a strikeout. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and Rosser again got out of the inning.
Then in the sixth, the defense came to Rosser's rescue when a hit to right field turned into a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/griffin_leo_z3t1">Leo Griffin</a>-to-<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/tygart_baker_ked6">C.J. Reid</a>-to Mazza play at the plate for an out.
<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/combs_sean_c4r2">Sean Combs</a>&nbsp;(2-2) took the loss with one-third of an inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/flores_colin_o7x4">Colin Flores</a>&nbsp;pitched the final two outs of the eighth inning.
The Blue Dragons were held to five hits to Cowley's eight.
Mazza went 2 for 3 with a double and triple with a run scored.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/maher_quinn_nqj4">Quinn Maher</a>&nbsp;was 2 for 3 with two doubles and a walk.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/allen_griffin_bmj4">Nick Glantz</a>&nbsp;had the only other Blue Dragon hit off three Cowley pitchers.
Last season the Blue Dragons lost the opening game of the Plains District Tournament and reeled off five-straight wins to force a second championship game.
Cowley won all three games in the season series with the Blue Dragons this season.

NEWTON &ndash; The two new players added to the lineup for the NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship came up big on Day 1 for the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team.
Freshmen Corey Scullion and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/walker_tyler_ijcw">Tyler Walker</a>&nbsp;both shot under par on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station and the Blue Dragons are just one stroke off the team lead after 18 holes.
The Blue Dragons had an opening-round 3-under 285 and trail Midland by one stroke. The Chapparals had a 284 on Tuesday. Hutchinson is tied with McLennan for second at 285. Indian Hills is fourth at 287 and Odessa is fifth with 288.

Round 2 is Wednesday at Sand Creek Station. The Blue Dragons tee off on Hole No. 1 from 12:40 to 1:20 p.m.
Scullion started his day with a double bogey on No. 10, but that was his only blemish in the opening round. Scullion got his round back to 2-over at the turn and then had birdies on Nos. 2, 4 and 5 to shoot 3-under over his final nine hole to shoot 2-under 70, which is in a five-way tie for sixth after 18 holes.
Walker set a strong pace for the Blue Dragons with three birdies in his first seven holes. Walker wound up with four birdies and three bogeys to shoot 1-under 71. Walker is in a seven-way tie for 11th.
Also in the Top 10 for the Blue Dragons is sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/box_charlie_0808">Charlie Box</a>, who is tied for sixth after a 2-under 70. Box had a roller-coaster round on Tuesday. He got to 3-under with three birdies in his first seven holes. Box then went through a four-hole stretch with two bogeys and a double bogey to fall to 1-over. Then with birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and a closing birdie on No. 9 to finish with a 70.
The Blue Dragons also counted sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/ross_louis_6g3i">Louis Ross</a>' 74 on Tuesday. Ross had two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Ross is finished tied for 64th.
Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/northgraves_jack_mp7b">Jack Northgraves</a>&nbsp;is tied for 64th on Tuesday after an opening-round 76. Northgraves had four birdies in his round, including consecutive birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18. He also had four bogeys and two double bogeys in his opening round.
North Idaho's Eli Mcnelly is the individual leader after 18 holes with a 6-under 66 on Tuesday. McLennan's Abe Bignell is second at 4-under 68.</div>

HESSTON, Kan. — Central Christian School left no doubt at the Wheat State League/Heart of the Plains League boys golf championship Tuesday, cruising to a commanding team victory at Hesston Golf Course with a score of 318, 79 strokes ahead of runner-up Goessel.

Ry Kooiman led the charge for the Cougars, firing an even-par 71 to win the individual title. Cael Kooiman, finished third with a 79, while teammates Nathan Reed (83), Tyler Reed (85), and Brody Froese (89) all placed inside the top 10.

The Cougars had all six golfers finish among the top 13, including Tarren Scripsick, who shot a 99. Their dominant showing easily outpaced the field, with Goessel (397) and Solomon (417) rounding out the top three.

Easton Glessner of Centre took second individually with a 78, while Goessel’s Levi Schrag placed fourth at 80.

Solomon’s Breken Coup (93) and Canton-Galva’s Jase Beltz (91) also cracked the top 10, as did Pretty Prairie’s Braden Woods (94).

DERBY, Kan. — Circle claimed the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III boys golf championship Tuesday at Derby Golf &amp; Country Club, edging Buhler by two strokes.

The T-Birds carded a team total of 327 to narrowly finish ahead of Buhler at 329. McPherson placed third with a 343, followed by Augusta (344), Winfield (349) and Mulvane (350).

McPherson’s Cole Cooper captured the individual crown, firing a 76 to top the field. Buhler’s Zach Chance and Circle’s Anderson Helmer tied for second with rounds of 78.

Buhler had three golfers finish in the top 15, including Drew DeMeyer, who tied for fourth with a 79, and brothers Nick and Zach Chance, who posted rounds of 86 and 78, respectively. Isaiah Heredia added an 86 for the Crusaders, and Jace Heimerman rounded out the team score with a 90.

McPherson’s Lawson Ediger tied for 13th with an 86, and Paxton Ingels contributed a 90 for the Bullpups, who had four players finish in the top 25.

Circle placed three golfers in the top 10, Helmer (78), Logan Martin (79), and Kolton Parrish (85), while Wyatt Sharp added an 85 to help secure the team title.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– The eyes of the college football world will be on Kansas State as the Wildcats kick off the 2025 college football season with the Aer Lingus College Football Classic against Iowa State kicking off at 11 a.m. (CT), 5 p.m. (GMT) and be televised by ESPN, the network announced Tuesday during the Disney Ad Sales Upfront.

This is the first time since 2010 against UCLA that K-State will open its season on ESPN. This is just the second time in the 129-year history of the program that the Wildcats will play abroad (1992 in Tokyo, Japan vs. Nebraska).

The Wildcats and Cyclones are meeting on a neutral-site field for just the third time in the 108-game series. Kansas State took both games of a two-game series at Arrowhead Stadium in 2009 and 2010.

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson were reinstated by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday, making both eligible for the sport’s Hall of Fame after their careers were tarnished by sports gambling scandals.

Rose’s permanent ban was lifted eight months&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-rose-obituary-reds-e0f3dfa057fc46629447e04b6540e4c8">after his death</a>&nbsp;and came a day before the Cincinnati Reds will honor baseball’s career hits leader with Pete Rose Night.

Manfred announced Tuesday that he was changing the league's policy on permanent ineligibility, saying bans would expire at death. Several others will also have their status changed by the ruling, including all members of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox, former Philadelphia Phillies president Williams D. Cox and former New York Giants outfielder Benny Kauff.

Under the Hall of Fame’s current rules, the earliest Rose or Jackson could be inducted would be in 2028.

Rose agreed to a permanent ban on Aug. 23, 1989, following an investigation commissioned by Major League Baseball concluded Rose repeatedly bet on the Reds as a player and manager of the team from 1985-87, a violation of a long-standing MLB rule.

Rose first applied for reinstatement in September 1997, but Commissioner Bud Selig never ruled on the request.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-b8d15e433f68468eab7030a08ed47c09">Manfred in 2015 rejected a petition for reinstatement</a>, saying “Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-rose-obituary-reds-e0f3dfa057fc46629447e04b6540e4c8">Rose died Sept. 30 at age 83</a>, and a new petition was filed Jan. 8 by Jeffrey Lenkov, a lawyer who represented Rose. Lenkov and Rose’s daughter Fawn had met with Manfred on Dec. 17.

Rose’s supporters have included U.S. President Donald Trump, who has said he intends to pardon Rose posthumously.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-rose-reinstatement-00a2532eeb4f1aa3dd81530260de44b8">Manfred discussed Rose with Trump</a>&nbsp;when the pair met in April, but he hasn’t disclosed specifics of their conversation.

In a letter to Lenkov, Manfred wrote, “In my view, a determination must be made regarding how the phrase ‘permanently ineligible’ should be interpreted in light of the purposes and policies behind Rule 21, which are to: (1) protect the game from individuals who pose a risk to the integrity of the sport by prohibiting the participation of such individuals; and (2) create a deterrent effect that reduces the likelihood of future violations by others.

"In my view, once an individual has passed away, the purposes of Rule 21 have been served. Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game. Moreover, it is hard to conceive of a penalty that has more deterrent effect than one that lasts a lifetime with no reprieve. Therefore, I have concluded that permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual, and Mr. Rose will be removed from the permanently ineligible list.”

A 17-time All-Star during a playing career from 1963-86, Rose holds record for hits (4,256), games (3,562), at-bats (14,053), plate appearances (15,890) and singles (3,215). He was the 1963 NL Rookie of the Year, 1973 MVP and 1975 World Series MVP. A three-time NL batting champion, he broke the prior hits record of 4,191 set by Ty Cobb from 1905-28.

“Pete is one of the greatest players in baseball history, and Reds Country will continue to celebrate him as we always have," Reds owner Bob Castellini said. “We are especially happy for the Rose family to receive this news and what this decision could mean for them and all of Pete’s fans.”

Jackson was a .356 career hitter who was among the eight Black Sox banned for throwing the 1919 World Series. He died in 1951, but he remains one of baseball's most recognizable names in part for his depiction by Ray Liotta in the 1989 movie Field of Dreams.

What else needs to happen for Rose or Jackson to reach the Hall of Fame?

Under a rule adopted by the Hall’s board of directors in 1991, anyone on the permanently ineligible list can’t be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rose-hall-of-fame-d3da8832097f2717590096d68600fee4">considered for election</a>&nbsp;to the Hall. Jackson was twice considered on ballots by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, but received just 0.9% in 1936 and 1% of a nominating vote in 1940.

Rose’s reinstatement occurred too late for him to be considered for the BBWAA ballot. If not on the permanently banned list, Rose would have been eligible on the ballots each from 1992 through 2006. He was written in on 41 votes in 1992 and on 243 of 7,232 ballots (3.4%) over the 15 years, votes that were not counted.

Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board Jane Forbes Clark said in a statement that players affected by Manfred's ruling Tuesday would be considered.

“The National Baseball Hall of Fame has always maintained that anyone removed from Baseball’s permanently ineligible list will become eligible for Hall of Fame consideration,” she said. “Major League Baseball’s decision to remove deceased individuals from the permanently ineligible list will allow for the Hall of Fame candidacy of such individuals to now be considered."

Without the ban, both players are eligible for the Hall’s Classic Baseball Era, which next meets to consider players in December 2027 and considers those whose greatest contributions to the sport were before 1980.

A 10-person historical overview committee selects the eight ballot candidates with the approval of the Hall’s board and the ballot is considered by 16 members at the winter meetings, with a 75% or higher vote needed. The committee members include Hall of Fame members, team executives and media/historians.

Among the players in the 2028 class eligible for the BBWAA ballot are Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina.

Trump has said he would pardon Rose, but it’s not clear what a presidential pardon for Rose would entail.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than 700 student-athletes from 35 teams across the country will converge on Hutchinson Community College this week as the 2025 NJCAA Division I National Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships return to Gowans Stadium, May 15-17.

This year marks the eighth time since 2009 and the first since 2017, that Gowans Stadium will serve as host for the national event.

Dr. Brett Monaghan, NJCAA vice president for championships, membership and sports governance, said the Hutchinson community and college continue to set the standard for hosting national events.

“Running any national championship is a big undertaking, but track and field especially requires extensive coordination,” Monaghan said. “Certainly the team at Hutchinson — Steve Carpenter, Josh Gooch and the staff — are well-prepared. They’ve hosted NJCAA events before, and there’s a lot of confidence in what they bring.”

The three-day meet will feature over 20 events in both men’s and women’s competition, from sprints and distance races to jumps and throws. Qualification standards ensure that only the top athletes compete, with approximately 16 individuals per event.

“You really do see future Olympians at this meet,” Monaghan said. “The level of athleticism is tremendous, and it’s a testament to the coaches who recruit and develop these student-athletes.”

The competition begins Thursday morning with combined events and field competitions at both Gowans Stadium and Fairgrounds Park, followed by relay and distance finals in the evening. Action continues Friday with preliminary rounds and more field events, before the championships wrap up Saturday with event finals and the awards presentation.

Monaghan praised the community's support, from HutchCC staff to Visit Hutch and local volunteers.

“Hutch is a special place,” Monaghan said. “Every time I come here, I’m impressed by the people who get involved. They want what’s best for the student-athletes, and that’s what makes this event great.”

Tickets are $10 for a single-day adult pass and $5 for K-6. Children that are not yet in school are free.

👟 NJCAA Track & Field Championships begin Thursday

The Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I and Heart of America held their league golf tournaments on Monday. Below are the results from the Hutch Post-area schools.

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School placed third in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I boys golf championship Monday at Pine Bay Golf Course, finishing behind Maize South and Maize.

Maize South cruised to the team title with a score of 308, placing all six of its golfers in the top 10. The Mavericks were led by medalist Joe Binger, who shot a 3-over-par 73 to claim individual honors. Colten Hoover (76) and Conrad Parkhurst (77) followed closely to complete a dominant top-three sweep.

Hutchinson carded a team score of 349 to take third place, edging Derby (354) and Valley Center (356) in a tightly contested race. The Salthawks finished two strokes behind Maize (347), which finished in second. Senior Mitchell Rice led the Salthawks with an 84, tying for 10th overall. Tate England shot an 87, while Alex Haas (88), Landyn Powell (90), Kevin Wilson (93) and Maks Dreiling (93) rounded out the scoring for Hutchinson.

HESSTON, Kan. — Trinity Catholic claimed the Heart of America League boys golf championship in dominant fashion Monday at Hesston Golf Course, firing a team score of 310.

The Celtics placed all six golfers in the top nine, each earning first-team all-league honors. Lincoln Barnes claimed the individual title after defeating teammate Ian Shaw in a two-hole playoff after each shot a 4-over-par 75. This is the second straight HOA league title for Barnes. Trinity also received matching rounds of 80 from Miles Blaylock and Tyler Casebolt, while Seamus Hogan (86) and Matt Armour (87) rounded out a deep lineup that finished 42 strokes ahead of runner-up Sterling.

Sterling posted a 352 to take second place, led by Cameron Morris with an 83 and supported by Waylon Schmidt and Wyatt Newberry, who each shot 89. Lane Weigel added a 91.

Sedgwick finished fourth with a team score of 409, highlighted by Keighan Earles’ sixth-place finish at 85. Teammates Renley&nbsp;Eggleston (104), Wyatt ReQua (110), Abby Banta (110), and Nate Hansen (113) contributed to the Cardinals’ total.

Inman took fifth at 419. Braeden Stutzman led the Teutons with a 92, followed by Creighton Friesen (97) and Keetan McEuen (111).

PRATT, Kan. — The Pratt Greenbacks claimed the Central Kansas League boys golf title on Monday at Park Hills Golf Course. The Greenbacks were led by individual champion, Grant McAtee.&nbsp;

McAtee shot an even-par 72 to win individual honors, while teammates Beau Ferrell (77) and Quinton Humble (80) finished second and third, respectively, to help the Greenbacks finish 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Hesston (334).

Hesston placed three golfers in a tie for fourth. Austin Penner, Aiden Bridgeman and Eli Frantz all carded rounds of 82. Grant Waterson and Eli Roth each shot 88 to round out the Swathers’ scoring.

Halstead finished fifth in the team standings with a 388. Wesley Parks led the Dragons with an 87, good for eighth place overall. Maxx Linton shot 98 and Lance Anderson added a 99.

Nickerson placed seventh with a 434. Kyler Nikkel led the Panthers with a 103, followed by Addrick Nelson at 108 and Jacob Myers at 109.

Hoisington took third place as a team (358), led by Logan Cossel’s seventh-place 84 and two other top-15 finishers in Nolan Jacobs (87) and Karson Kinman (92). Hillsboro was fourth at 383, paced by Lincoln Wichert’s 91.

Box wasn't the only Blue Dragon to earn PING postseason honors on Monday night.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/northgraves_jack_mp7b">Jack Northgraves</a>&nbsp;was named to the 2025 PING All-Freshman team. Box, Northgraves and freshman Corey Scullion were named to the PING All-Central District Team.
Head coach Chris Young was named a finalist for the Dave Williams Coach of the Year award.
Box has been one of the top-ranked NJCAA Division I golfers all season. This spring, Box won both the Jayhawk Conference and Region 6 individual championships and tied for fourth in the Plains District Championship.
Box has four overall tournament championships this season, winning the NJCAA National Preview and the Sam Proal Classic in the fall season. Box has placed in the Top 10 in 9 of 11 overall tournaments this season.
During the first round of the Jayhawk Conference Championship at Colbert Hills in Manhattan, Box shot a school- and course-record 62. Last season, Box was a PING All-American honorable mention. He joins, Charlie Crockett, Harry Crockett and Ben Partridge as PING All-Americans in back-to-back seasons.
Box is the 18th all-time Blue Dragon to earn PING All-America honors.
Northgraves is ranked No. 19 in the nation this season and ranked No. 5 in the Central District. He won the Iowa Western Bent Tree Classic in September and has four Top 10 finishes this season. Northgraves earned first-team All-KJCCC honors with a fourth-place finish in the conference championship.
Scullion has earned three-straight Top 10 finishes, including tying for fourth in the Central District Championship at Tiffany Greens in Kansas City, Missouri. He earned second-team All-KJCCC honors with a sixth-place performance in the conference tournament and was second-team all-Region 6 after placing eighth at Sand Creek Station.
Young led the 2024-25 Blue Dragons to five team championships and seven Top-3 finishes this season. The Blue Dragons qualified for their 24th-straight NJCAA Tournament appearance with a third-place performance in the Central District Championship
2025 NJCAA Tournament The Blue Dragons enter the 2025 Division I Championships ranked No. 3 in the nation. The Blue Dragons will be paired with No. 1 Midland and No. 2 Odessa for rounds 1 and 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Blue Dragons will tee off between 12:40 and 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Blue Dragon lineup will have Northgraves,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/walker_tyler_ijcw">Tyler Walker</a>, Scullion,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/ross_louis_6g3i">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;and Box with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2024-25/bios/schultz_cal_h6x5">Cal Schultz</a>&nbsp;as a substitute.
The Blue Dragons will be going after a fifth-straight Top 10 national finish and are eyeing their third national championship since 2021.</div>

One year ago, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team made a magical run in the Plains District (Region 6) Tournament that went all the way to the second championship game.
The Blue Dragons hope to take that extra step this season when the eight-team, double-elimination 2025 Plains District Tournament opens on Tuesday at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

The fifth-seeded Blue Dragons (39-19) will play No. 4-seed Cowley (43-10) in the fourth opening-round game of the day at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Hutchinson-Cowley winner will play the Barton-Coffeyville winner at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in a winner's bracket game. The Blue Dragon-Tiger loser will meet the Cougar-Red Raven loser in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
The other opening-round matchups are: 10 a.m. &ndash; No. 3 Cloud County vs. No. 6 Kansas City; 1 p.m. &ndash; No. 2 Johnson County vs. No. 10 Fort Scott; 4 p.m. &ndash; No. 1 Barton vs. No. 8 Coffeyville.
The Plains District championship game is set for 4 p.m. on Friday with an If Necessary game at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Plains District winner qualifies for the 2025 NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Blue Dragons and Tigers meet twice in the 2025 regular season. Hutchinson lost 6-4 on March 11 at Hobart-Detter Field and 17-3 on April 28 at Arkansas City.
In the 2024 Plains District Tournament at Eck Stadium in Wichita, the Blue Dragons eliminated the Tigers 8-6 in a third-round elimination game.
Tuesday's meeting will be the ninth postseason meeting between Hutchinson and Cowley dating back to when the current postseason format began in 2004. The postseason series between the Blue Dragons and Tigers is tied at 4-4.
All games will be available on videostream on the KJCCC Network, which is a pay-per-view service. Admission to Dean Evans Stadium in $10 per day.</div>

Football fans can plan on wrapping up Christmas with an AFC West rivalry that could come with plenty of playoff implications.

The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Denver Broncos on Christmas at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, the NFL announced on Monday.

Kansas City has dominated the AFC West over the last decade, winning nine straight division titles from 2016-2024, but Denver's rise to prominence under Sean Payton in 2024 suggests the going may not be as easy for the Chiefs in 2025. With&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/players/bo-nix/">Bo Nix</a>&nbsp;and a collection of talent at his disposal, Payton's Broncos are aiming to take the next step by challenging for a throne that the Chiefs have claimed annually for the entirety of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/players/patrick-mahomes/">Patrick Mahomes</a>' career.

If they reach the holidays with a chance to accomplish that goal, the matchup will make for a highly intriguing closer for the Christmas Day slate.

Chiefs to host Broncos on Christmas night 

HOUSTON (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. and Jonathan India each drove in two runs to help Michael Wacha and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 7-5 on Monday night.

Michael Massey homered as Kansas City improved to 8-2 in its last 10 games. India finished with three hits, and Witt, Vinnie Pasquantino and Kyle Isbel each had two.

Wacha (3-4) allowed two runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Carlos Estévez got three outs for his 12th save.

Massey sparked Kansas City's four-run second with a leadoff drive against rookie Ryan Gusto (3-2) for his second homer. India hit a two-out RBI single and scored on Witt's first triple of the season. Pasquantino added a run-scoring single.

The Royals added three more in the third. Drew Waters and India each hit an RBI single, and Witt drove in Waters with a sacrifice fly.

Jake Meyers had two hits and scored two runs for Houston, which had won three of four.

Zach Dezenzo hit an RBI double in the seventh for the Astros, and Jeremy Peña added a sacrifice fly. Meyers' RBI single helped his team close to 7-5 in the eighth.

Gusto allowed seven hits and walked three in 2 1/3 innings.

Jose Altuve hit a leadoff single in the ninth for Houston. But Isaac Paredes flied out, Christian Walker struck out and Yainer Diaz flied out.

Wacha entered with the least run support among starters at 1.79 runs per game. The Royals had not scored more than two runs with him on the mound in any of his eight starts.

LHP Kris Bubic (4-2, 1.69 ERA) starts on Tuesday for the Royals against LHP Framber Valdez (2-4, 3.94 ERA).
