Va. &ndash;&nbsp;Following a stellar week of play, K-State guard&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/taryn-sides/11857" rel="smarttag" rev="11857">Taryn Sides</a></dfn>&nbsp;collected her first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor in an announcement on Monday. The sophomore from Phillipsburg, Kansas, came off the bench in both games to register 19.0 points on a .571 field goal percentage including a .588 three-point percentage, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.0 blocks. At Cincinnati on Wednesday, Sides carded her first career double-double with 17 points including a 4-of-10 effort from distance, a career-high 12 rebounds, four assists and a steal in 27 minutes of action. Against UCF on Saturday, Sides registered her second 20-point game of the season with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range, six assists, four rebounds, tied her career-high with four steals and set a career-high with two blocks in 28 minutes off the bench. For the season, the 2025 Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year candidate is averaging a career-high 10.2 points on a career-best .484 field goal percentage and a career-best .469 effort from long range. Her three-point percentage ranks second in school history for a season. SURPRISE, Ariz.—The Kansas City Royals this morning announced that Executive Vice President and General Manager&nbsp;J.J. Picollo&nbsp;has agreed to a contract extension, which will run through the 2030 season with a club option for 2031. Additionally, the Royals have exercised Manager&nbsp;Matt Quatraro’s&nbsp;club option for the 2026 season.

“J.J. is one of the top executives in baseball, and I am proud that he’s leading our pursuit of a championship,” said Royals Chairman and CEO&nbsp;John Sherman. “His ability to lead and connect with people, his intellectual curiosity, and his innovative methods of combining the best of traditional scouting and player development with advanced sciences and technologies are driving us toward that ultimate goal.”

Picollo is in his 19th full season with the Royals and his third full season in his current position. He was named the seventh General Manager in franchise history on Sept. 12, 2021&nbsp;and was elevated to his current role a year later. The Royals have hired more than 30 new people in Baseball Operations since he was named Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations in September 2022.

The Royals spent $110M on free agents during the 2023-24 offseason, which was the most among American League teams. That number does not include the extension of&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr., who in February 2024 signed the biggest contract in franchise history, a 14-year agreement that includes 11 years guaranteed.

Those offseason efforts led the Royals to an 86-76 record in 2024, resulting in a postseason berth and a 30-win improvement from the previous season. They were just the sixth team in the 162-game Era (since 1961) to have a 30-win improvement from one season to the next (excluding shortened seasons). Kansas City’s turnaround led to Picollo finishing as the runner-up in the 2024 Executive of the Year voting.

Since Picollo’s&nbsp;arrival in 2006, the Royals have had 36 different players, coaches or trainers be selected to the All-Star Game, combining for a total of 59 All-Star selections. Of the 21 All-Star players among that group, 11 were originally drafted or signed by the Royals. During the same time, the Royals have produced nine different players who have earned a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award, and that group has combined for 23 Gold Gloves. During Picollo’s&nbsp;tenure, the Royals have also had five different players combine for nine Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;&ndash; Luke Wells, a veteran offensive coach who has worked for three prior Big 12 programs over the course of his career, has been hired at Kansas State to work with the Wildcat tight ends, head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/2502" rel="smarttag" rev="2502">Chris Klieman</a></dfn>&nbsp;announced Monday. His hiring is pending a successful background check. "Luke brings an extensive amount of coaching experience and recruiting energy to our tight end room, which of course has been a big piece to our recent offensive success," Klieman said. "I have known Luke for quite a while and even visited with him during previous position openings, and we are thrilled to have him and his family in our program." Wells, a 2002 graduate of Oklahoma who both played and coached for the Sooners, most recently coached in college at Tulsa in 2022, while he has also spent time coaching receivers and tight ends at Iowa State and Texas Tech during his career. "I am grateful for the opportunity from Coach Klieman to help this staff and be a part of the winning culture at K-State," Wells said. "I can't wait to get to work with our talented group of tight ends." While at Texas Tech, Wells all but built the tight end position from scratch while helping three players from his position room earn All-Big 12 accolades in tight end Donta Thompson and inside receiver Dalton Rigdon in 2019 as well as inside receiver KeSean Carter in 2020. Prior to arriving at Texas Tech, Wells served as Utah State's co-offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator from 2013 to 2016, working with the tight ends the first three years and then the quarterbacks in 2016. He shifted back to overseeing Utah State's tight ends and inside receivers his final two years in Logan where the Aggies boasted one of the nation's top offenses. It was the first time he worked under his brother, Matt, K-State's current offensive coordinator who was the head coach at both Utah State and Texas Tech. Wells mentored one of the top tight ends in Utah State history in Wyatt Houston, who tallied 86 receptions for 933 yards and nine touchdowns over the 2013 through 2016 seasons, as all three of his marks ranked second in school history among tight ends. Houston earned All-Mountain West Honorable Mention accolades as a senior in 2016. Prior to Houston, fellow tight end D.J. Tialavea thrived under Wells' direction before signing a rookie free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014. Tialavea went on to join the Falcons' organization a year later and was a member of the franchise when Atlanta played in Super Bowl LI. Another Wells pupil, Jefferson Court, joined the professional ranks in 2015 as he was the 37th player selected in the CFL Draft by the Ottawa Redblacks. Offense was a prevalent theme of Utah State's success during Wells' final two seasons as the Aggies averaged 47.5 points per game in 2018, which trailed only Oklahoma for the top spot in the country. The Aggies racked up 618 points on the season, snapping the Mountain West and Utah State single-season records in the process. Utah State scored at least 40 points in 13 different games over his final two seasons, including 10 times with 50 or more points. The Aggies reached the 50-point mark a school-record seven times in 2018 alone en route to breaking almost every offensive record in Utah State history. In Wells' first season, the Aggies set school records for completions (297), total plays (1,073), touchdown passes (30) and first downs (310). Utah State scored 445 points that season and attempted 481 passes, which both ranked second in school history. Utah State's tight ends also set the single-season school record for touchdown receptions with nine, topping the previous record from 1993. Prior to his time at Utah State, Wells was the wide receivers and tight ends coach at Iowa State from 2009 through 2012, helping the Cyclones advance to three bowl games in four years. Wells arrived in Ames following six seasons at Louisiana-Monroe where he began as an offensive graduate assistant in 2003 before being promoted to tight ends coach for the 2004 through 2006 seasons and then tutoring the Warhawks' wide receivers in 2007 and 2008. He coached first team all-conference tight end Joey Trappey in 2005 and second-team honoree Zeek Zacharie in 2006 before producing an honorable mention wide receiver in Anthony McCall a year later. Wells also served as ULM's recruiting coordinator over his final two seasons, helping Monroe sign its highest-rated class in school history at that time. Wells earned his first full-time coaching position managing the wide receivers at Denton (Texas) High School in 2002. He began his collegiate coaching career as a student assistant at Oklahoma from 1999 through 2001, helping the Sooners claim the 2000 Big 12 Championship and BCS National Championship. Wells earned his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma in secondary education in 2002. He and his wife, Coby, have a son, Walker, and a daughter, Kinsley. Ninth in the No. 24 Chevrolet with one lap left, Byron became the first back-to-back winner since Denny Hamlin in 2019-20. Byron took advantage of another wreck on the final lap — NASCAR did not drop the caution and let the field race to the finish — and took another, familiar burnout in Daytona International Speedway. The 27-year-old Byron held on to win after two weather delays totaling more than 3 1/2 hours.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The winning total last year: 211 points. The winning total this year: 41 points. An All-Star Game like none other — since it was three games, not one — still had plenty of flash and not a lot of fire. And in the end, Jayson Tatum had the dunk that decided a crown. Shaq's OGs won the first All-Star mini-tournament in NBA history on Sunday night, getting 15 points from Tatum and 12 from Stephen Curry to beat Chuck's Global Stars 41-25 in the final. It was the debut of the All-Star mini-tournament format: four teams, three games, first to 40 points wins.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry has captured MVP honors at the All-Star Game in front of his home fans, in his arena. Curry earned all this well-deserved fanfare in what has been a remarkable run from Oakland to San Francisco for the Golden State Warriors star. Curry scored the first points of the final on a 3-pointer and later connected from half-court, running down the other way to chest-bump rapper Mistah Fab along one baseline. He helped Shaq's OGs beat Chuck's Global Stars 41-25, scoring 12 points on four 3-pointers.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Denny Hamlin surged into the lead on the final lap of the Daytona 500 and thought he had a fourth victory in "The Great American Race" within his reach Sunday night. Especially when Riley Herbst went spinning through the infield grass. Hamlin figured NASCAR was for sure going to throw a caution, especially after the Xfinity Series race a day earlier ended under yellow. Asked whether it could impact Stanton's availability for the March 27 opener against Milwaukee, Boone responded: "Tough to say." The eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner is coming off a season that was not up to his standards, hitting .272 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs. AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Vanderbilt's Mikayla Blakes scored a Division I women's freshman record 55 points in a 98-88 overtime victory over Auburn. Blakes, a 5-foot-8 guard who is averaging 21.8 points, shot 15 for 28 from the field with two 3-pointers and made 23 of 24 free throws. She broke the record set by Elena Delle Donne, who scored 54 as a redshirt freshman at Delaware in a 2010 loss to James Madison. Blakes scored her 55th point from the foul line with 17 seconds left in OT. She then missed her next free throw, the only miss in 24 attempts. She scored 11 of her points in overtime.

The late bullpen heroics made an early lead stand up, as the Shockers scored four times in the first innings.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/camden-johnson/9183" rel="smarttag" rev="9183" data-airgap-id="61">Camden Johnson</a></dfn>&nbsp;led off the contest with a solo home run on the game's first pitch, Wichita State's first game-opening home run since Chuck Ingram did so against Tulane on April 14, 2023. Then in the second inning, the Shockers (1-2) put three more runs on the board, getting a two-run triple from&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/cole-dillon/9411" rel="smarttag" rev="9411" data-airgap-id="62">Cole Dillon</a></dfn>&nbsp;and a run-scoring single from Johnson for a 4-0 lead. Miner got the Shockers through the fifth with the lead, though McNeese did strike for a pair of runs in the fifth via a Connor Schneider RBI groundout and a Conner Westenburg RBI single. Johnson then battled his way to a walk that plated the final run of the game for the Shockers. TOPEKA &ndash; Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/mangelson_farrin_7y5g">Farrin Mangelson</a>&nbsp;broke the Hutchinson Community College indoor men's track and field 3,000-meter school record on Saturday to lead the Blue Dragons on Saturday at the Ichabod Invitational at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
Mangelson placed third on Saturday with a Blue Dragon and national qualifying time of 8:19.75. Right behind Mangelson was teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kogo_cornelius_hf87">Cornelius Kogo</a>, who posted the second-fastest 3,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history with a ninth-place time of 8:26.14.
Two weeks ago on the same track, Mangelson broke the Blue Dragon 5,000-meter record.
Both Mangelson and Kogo surpassed the 2021 record of Teagan Flanagan, whose time of 8:31.79 was set at the 2021 NJCAA Indoor Championships.
Mangelson and Kogo both qualify for the NJCAA Indoor Championships in March in Lubbock, Texas. The Blue Dragons have 12 individual qualifiers and one relay heading into the Region 6 Championships in March at Lubbock, Texas.
The Dragons had a third qualifier on Saturday with&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kiprotich_titus_hgfs">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;in the 800 meters. Kiprotich placed third on Saturday with a time of 4:10.63, which ranks No. 2 in Blue Dragon history.
Mangelson, Kogo and Kiprotich are all two-time individual national qualifiers in the 2025 indoor season.
Freshman sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/makalo_kebba_vl76">Kebba Makalo</a>&nbsp;was the Ichabod Invitational runner-up in the 60 meters with a time of 6.77 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in Blue Dragon indoor history. He qualified for the finals with a time of 6.84 seconds on Friday.
The Blue Dragons had one other Top 3 placing on Saturday with pole vaulter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/martinez_gregory_ohfu">Gregory Martinez</a>&nbsp;placing third with a clearance of 14-1 1/4 (4.30 meters).

TOPEKA &ndash; Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/picolet_jordan_z3sx">Jordyn Picolet</a>&nbsp;earned a second national qualification and did so with a school-record performance to lead the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team at the Ichabod Invitational on Saturday at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
Picolet beat the 2020 record of Louise Cocking by six second posting an NJCAA Indoor national championship-qualifying time of 10:19.29 to finish 11th in the Ichabod Invitational field.
Picolet earned her second national qualifying mark, also qualifying in the 5,000 meters two weeks ago at the Washburn Open. The Blue Dragon women now have six qualifiers heading into next week's Region 6 Championships next Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburg.
There were four other Blue Dragon Top 10 performances on Saturday.
Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/grantham_abigail_40ez">Abigail Grantham</a>&nbsp;and Laura Avila moved up the Blue Dragon record charts in the mile run. Grantham posted the fourth-fastest Blue Dragon indoor mile run of 5:16.28, shaving 20 seconds off her previous RP. Grantham placed 19th on Saturday. Avila trimmed 17 seconds off her previous PR in the Mile with a time of 5:23.57, the sixth-fastest mark in Blue Dragon history. Avila placed 33rd on Saturday.
Grantham also posted the seventh-fastest 800-meter time in Blue Dragon history with a 19th-place time of 2:25.97.
Thrower Deisheline Mayer Scott moved up to sixth on the Blue Dragon weight throw chart with a throw of 48 feet, 3 1/2 inches in the weight throw, placing 15th.
One note to a Friday performance at the Ichabod Invitational, thrower&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/montaque_janiel_88cd">Janiel Montaque</a>'s shot put top distance of 43-5 1/4 (13.24) meters ranked ninth in the NJCAA and tied for seventh in Blue Dragon history.

MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma &ndash; The No. 23-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team earned its second-straight 5-0 start to a season and completed a three-game series sweep of the Rose State Raiders on Saturday.
Led by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/stokes_taber_u8n0">Taber Stokes</a>' two hits and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>'s two RBIs, the Blue Dragons defeated the Raiders 6-3 on Saturday morning to sweep the Raiders in a series for the second time in the last five seasons. Hutchinson won Games 1 and 2 on Friday with victories of 6-1 and 18-4 on Friday.
The Blue Dragons start a season 5-0 for the 11th time in program history. Hutchinson is scheduled to play Highland on Friday and Des Moines Area on Sunday at Hobart-Detter Field.
For the series, the Blue Dragons outscored Rose State 28-8 and out-hit the Raiders 36-20. The Dragons racked up a combined 30 strikeouts in the three-game series.
On Saturday, the Blue Dragons trailed 1-0 after three innings and rallied for six runs over their next four innings to take control.
The Dragons tied and took the lead in the fourth inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mustow_adam_sf8t">A.J. Wichita State (15-10, 5-7 AAC) won its fourth-straight game and first over a ranked opponent in the regular season since 2021. The Shockers had five players in double figures. Corey Washington had a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

The Tigers (21-5, 11-2) saw their eight-game winning-streak end. Tyrese Hunter led the Tigers with 24 points. Moussa Cisse had a double-double for Memphis with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Wichita State took a 32-28 lead into halftime highlighted by an 11-3 run in the final 5:28 of the opening 20 minutes.

Ronnie DeGray III hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 71-71 with 18 seconds left for the Shockers to force overtime. The Tigers scored the first four points in OT before the Shockers took over.

Wichita State: The Shockers limited Memphis’ leading scorer PJ Haggerty to just two points in the first half and 14 in total. Wichita State controlled the rebound battle outrebounding the Tigers 54-45.

Memphis: The Tigers struggled shooting going 27-for-75 from the floor.

Cortes hit the key 3-pointer to give the Shockers the lead with just 1:10 left in overtime. He had missed his first two 3-point attempts in the game.

Wichita State shot just 19% as a team from three-point range, but made the key ones to spark the win.

Wichita State goes to Florida Atlantic on Thursday. Memphis will get a week off before hosting Florida Atlantic next Sunday.

Utah (14-11, 6-8 Big 12) never trailed but Kansas tied the game at 60 before the Utes' big finish.

Zeke Mayo had to leave the game briefly with a lower leg injury but led Kansas (17-8, 8-6) with 15 points while Dajuan Harris Jr. had 14 points and Hunter Dickinson added 12.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Richie Saunders scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on Saturday night to help BYU beat Kansas State 80-65 and snap the Wildcats’ six-game win streak.

Dallin Hall scored 16 points and Fousseyni Traore 11 for BYU (17-8, 8-6 Big 12). Keba Keita added nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Egor Demin threw down a dunk that gave BYU the lead for good less than five minutes into the game and sparked a 17-4 run that made it 26-12 about four minutes later. The Cougars led by at least eight point the rest of the way.

CJ Jones made layup for the Wildcats with 7:43 left in the first and half and neither team scored again until Hall’s layup with 2:56 to go until halftime that gave BYU a 14-point lead.

The Wildcats (24-3, 12-2 Big 12) scored the first seven points of the third quarter to build a 28-point lead and wrapped up the period with a 10-0 run to take an 81-44 lead to the fourth quarter. Sides made three 3-pointers, scored 10 points and had four assists in the quarter. In addition to her 21 points, she finished with six assists, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

Temira Poindexter scored 16 points and Jaelyn Glenn had 14 points. They were both 4 for 6 from 3-point distance and the Wildcats made 14 of 20 as a team. They shot 58% from the field and made 13 of 16 free throws.

Zyanna Walker scored 14 points for K-State. She, Glenn and Sides all had six assists and the Wildcats had 27 assists on 35 made baskets.

Cannon now has three 20-plus point games this season, as he secured his fourth straight double-figure scoring contest.

Hutchinson is now 16-9 overall, 12-7 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons remain in fifth place in the conference standings with five games to go.

Cloud County (11-14, 5-14) came out with a hot start, leading 16-6 with 11:43 to play in the first half.&nbsp;

After the Blue Dragons settled down and picked up the defensive intensity, the Thunderbirds struggled.

HutchCC held Cloud County to 12 points for the final 11:43 of the opening half, while the Blue Dragons went on a 28-12 run to lead 34-28 at halftime.

The Blue Dragons dominated the second half, scoring a season-best 64 points in the final 20 minutes. Hutchinson shot 60% from the floor in the second half, knocking down six 3-pointers and 16 of 17 from the foul line.&nbsp;

Nichols finished the game with 20 points and a career-high 12 assists, while adding four rebounds in 36 minutes of action.&nbsp; In scoring 1,000 career points in her 58th career game, Nichols is now the second-fastest player in program history to reach the milestone, trailing only Kansas legend Lynette Woodard who made it in just 39 games.&nbsp; "Anytime somebody says Lynette Woodard and then your name, you know that's pretty rarefied air," Kansas coach&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/brandon-schneider/737" data-airgap-id="78">Brandon Schneider</a>&nbsp;said postgame. CLEARWATER, Fla. &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State split the final day of the Shriner's Childrens Clearwater Invitational, defeating Liberty, 3-2, before falling to No. 8/9 Florida State in 6 innings, 15-5, on Saturday evening at Eddie C. Moore Complex. &nbsp; With the split, the Shockers finish 1-4 at the Clearwater Invitational. WICHITA &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State picked up its third American Athletic Conference victory with a 60-57 win over the Owls in a back-and-forth contest Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena. &nbsp; "It was a great overall team effort," head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/terry-nooner/1225" rel="smarttag" rev="1225" data-airgap-id="58">Terry Nooner</a></dfn>&nbsp;said. "We had a great week of practice, and it was a well-deserved win for us." &nbsp; Wichita State (9-18, 3-11 AAC) held the Owls (12-13, 5-8 AAC) to just 57 points, well below their season average off 66.5, marking the fourth time in five games that the Shockers have kept their opponents below 60 points. Ndour hit one of two free throws with 3:17 to play, putting the Shockers up three, but Rice's Alexis Aniah made a jumper to make it a one-point game under three minutes. &nbsp; Anderson hit a pair of crucial free throws to push it back to a three-point Shocker lead, but Malia Fisher drained a three for Rice to tie it back up at 50-50 with 2:07 left. &nbsp; Murray recorded back-to-back buckets as the Shockers forced two turnovers in the final minute.
