HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Back at Gowans Stadium for the first time in 35 days, the Hutchinson Community College football team wasted no time putting on a show for the home crowd Saturday afternoon, scoring in nearly every possible way to extend its winning streak to 10 games for just the seventh time in program history.

Kordell Gouldsby dazzled with two punt-return touchdowns, and Derrick Salley Jr. hauled in three more scoring grabs as the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons dominated Independence, 71-12. The win tied the fourth-longest streak in program history and marked Hutchinson’s fifth straight victory over the Pirates.

Hutchinson (6-0, 2-0 KJCCC) has now scored at least 70 points twice this season — the 19th time in program history — and improved to 61-24-5 all-time against Independence, including 35-10-2 at Gowans Stadium. The Dragons will host No. 12 Coffeyville next Saturday at 7 p.m.

Gouldsby, who entered the night with three career return touchdowns, doubled that total with 34- and 56-yard punt returns for scores. He totaled 118 return yards and 161 all-purpose yards, also adding two catches for 37 yards. Gouldsby became the first Blue Dragon to return two punts for touchdowns in a game since Tre Richardson in 2023.

Salley continued his historic season with touchdown catches of 1, 5 and 45 yards — giving him 12 on the year and tying Lonnie Crittenden (1970) and Cordarrelle Patterson (2011) for the second-most single-season touchdown receptions in program history. He finished with four receptions for 63 yards.

Quarterback Christian Johnson was sharp, completing 9 of 12 passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Backup Hudson Ferralez threw for 99 yards and added two short rushing scores, helping the Dragons put up 415 total yards.

The defense turned in one of its most dominant outings of the season, recording 10 sacks — tied for the third-most in school history and the most since 2019. J’Lynn Allen led the way with a career-best three. The Dragons also forced five takeaways, with interceptions by DaMun Allen, Amir Hill, and Earl Parker.

Hutchinson’s ground game controlled the tempo, outgaining the Pirates 200-29 on the ground. Daeshawn Carter led the team with 50 yards and a touchdown, while Lekedrin Harvey added 49 yards and a score.

Special teams continued to shine. Hill blocked a punt — Hutchinson’s seventh blocked kick of the season — and Alejandro de la Poza booted field goals of 31, 41, and 26 yards while going 8 of 9 on PATs to finish with 17 points.

The Dragons built a 17-0 first-quarter lead, stretched it to 37-0 by halftime, and never looked back, leading 58-6 after three quarters.

Head coach Drew Dallas notched his 55th career win on the Hutchinson sideline. The victory also ended the Dragons’ streak of 11 consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown, one of several statistical milestones in another dominant performance for the defending national champions.

NEWTON, Kan.&nbsp; — The Hutchinson Salthawks dug deep Friday night, rallying from a two-touchdown halftime deficit to edge the winless Newton Railers 15-14 at Fischer Field in Newton.

Newton (0-7) controlled the game early, scoring twice in the first half and taking a 14-0 lead into the locker room. Hutchinson’s offense struggled to find rhythm until midway through the third quarter, when quarterback Robert Hunter led a scoring drive capped by quarterback keeper for&nbsp; a 8 yard touchdown run. A blocked extra point left the Salthawks trailing 14-6.

Momentum shifted moments later when Hutchinson’s special teams pinned Newton deep at its own 6-yard line. On the next play, the Salthawk defense broke through for a safety with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 14-8.

Hutchinson (5-2) capitalized on the momentum, putting together a four-play, 46-yard drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Hunter to Lamar Govain with 1:14 left in the quarter. Zae Gillen’s extra point gave the Salthawks their first lead of the night, 15-14.

Newton had two late chances to reclaim the lead, but both field goal attempts missed the mark — a 35-yarder midway through the fourth quarter and a 25-yarder in the final 44 seconds. Hutchinson took over on downs and ran out the clock to seal the comeback victory.

With the win, Hutchinson improved to 5-2 and remains in contention for a good seed in the Class 5A West bracket. The Salthawks will close out the regular season next week at home against Maize South, while Newton travels to Arkansas City.

A Hutchinson win next week could secure a first-round home game when the 5A playoffs begin on Oct. 31.

🏈 Week 7 Hutch Post area high school football scoreboard

With more than 2,200 miles covered and three victories under its belt since its last home game on September 13, the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon football team finally returns to Gowans Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (5-0, 1-0 KJCCC) continues Jayhawk Conference play against the Independence Pirates (3-3, 1-2 KJCCC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Rob Dreher (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live only on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

Now riding a nine-game winning streak dating back to last season, the Blue Dragons return home after a Jayhawk Conference-opening 44-3 victory last Saturday at Dodge City.

The Blue Dragon defense continued to excel, not allowing a touchdown for a second-straight game and a streak of nine overall quarters dating back to the fourth quarter of the Iowa Central game on September 20.

Hutchinson's defense will get a big challenge today as Independence comes into the game as the Jayhawk Conference's No. 1-ranked and NJCAA No. 4-ranked passing offense. Averaging slightly more than 38 pass attempts per game, the Pirates are averaging 284.0 passing yards per game. Pirate freshman quarterback Keegan Anderson completes 61.5 percent of his passes and has thrown for 12 touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Blue Dragons have racked up 23 quarterback sacks and have 10 interceptions this season.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/wiley_darius_xg0z">Darius Wiley</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/moorer_kevin_g4lb">Kevin Moorer</a>&nbsp;have 4.5 quarterback sacks per game. M.J. Graham has four interceptions and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/allen_da-mun_9wzy">Da'Mun Allen</a>&nbsp;has three. Allen is coming off a two-interception game last week against Dodge City.

Hutchinson ranks No. 2 in the nation in scoring defense at 11.0 points per game allowed. The Blue Dragons rank No. 3 in total defense (212.6 ypg), No. 3 in rush defense (52.2 ypg) and No. 12 in pass defense (160.4 ppg.)

Offensively, the Blue Dragons are No. 2 in the NJCAA in scoring offense at 47.0 points per game and No. 10 in total offense at 424.4 yards per game.

Last week against Dodge City, quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/johnson_christian_b2h0">Christian Johnson</a>&nbsp;threw for three touchdowns and was 17 of 30 passing for 239 yards. Johnson earned KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, adding a career-high 70 rushing yards to his performance against the Conquistadors.

The Blue Dragons rolled up 382 total yards. Receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2025-26/bios/salley_jr._derrick_8ftn">Derrick Salley Jr.</a>, had his third 100-yard game of the season with seven catches for 135 yards. He had a 40-yard touchdown reception to continue his streak to five-straight games with a touchdown reception.

Series History vs. Independence&nbsp;- Saturday's meeting will be the 90th all-time between Hutchinson and Independence. The Blue Dragons own a 60-24-5 series advantage over the Pirates and are on a four-game win streak.

The 60 wins over Independence are the most by the Blue Dragons against any opponent in team history.

The Blue Dragons are 26-14-3 against Independence in games played in Independence. The Dragons are 34-10-2 in games played in Hutchinson.

Oklahoma Wesleyan University will open the 2025 KCAC men’s basketball season as the team to beat, earning the No. 1 ranking in both the preseason coaches’ and media polls released Thursday by the conference office.

The Eagles, who captured last year’s regular-season title and advanced to the NAIA national championship game, collected 162 total points and seven first-place votes in the coaches’ poll. Friends University was close behind with 156 points and six first-place votes. Bethel College and the University of Saint Mary tied for third with 139 points each, with Bethel claiming the final first-place vote. Southwestern College rounded out the top five at 128 points.

McPherson College earned the No. 7 spot in the coaches’ poll, while Sterling College was ranked 11th as both teams look to move up after competitive showings last season.

In the media poll, Oklahoma Wesleyan again edged Friends for the top spot by a single point — 159 to 158. The University of Saint Mary followed in third with 137 points and one first-place vote, while Southwestern (126) and Bethel (122) completed the top five.

McPherson was picked ninth by the media, and Sterling landed at No. 11.

MANHATTAN, Kan. &ndash; Junior guard <dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/p-j-haggerty/12751" rel="smarttag" rev="12751">P.J. Haggerty</a></dfn> has been named to the 10-member Preseason All-Big 12 team by the league coaches, as the conference announced its annual preseason poll and all-conference teams on Thursday morning (Oct. 16). A consensus Second Team All-American and AAC Player of the Year at Memphis, Haggerty is one of three newcomers on the Preseason All-Big 12 team, along with freshman phenoms AJ Dybantsa of BYU and Darryn Peterson of Kansas. The trio of newcomers are joined by seven returners in BYU's Richie Saunders, Houston's Emanuel Sharp, Joseph Tugler and Milos Uzan, Iowa State's Tamin Lipsey and Texas Tech's Christian Anderson and JT Toppin. Dybantsa, Uzan, Peterson and Toppin were all unanimous selections. Toppin and Peterson were named the Preseason Player and Freshman of the Year, while Toppin's teammate LeJuan Watts was selected as the Preseason Newcomer of the Year. K-State was picked ninth in the 16-team preseason poll with 117 points, just three points behind eighth-place Cincinnati and 27 points ahead of 10th-place TCU. Reigning regular-season and tournament champion Houston was selected first with 224 points and 14 of the 16 first-place votes followed by second-place BYU (204 points, one first-place vote) and third-place Texas Tech (200 points). The rest of the top-7 included Arizona (179 points, one first-place vote), Iowa State (170), Kansas (163) and Baylor (137).
 The rest of the preseason poll included eighth-place Cincinnati (120) followed by K-State, TCU, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Utah, UCF, Colorado and Arizona State. Haggerty's selection marks the second straight year that a Wildcat has been named to the preseason all-conference team (<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coleman-hawkins/12179" rel="smarttag" rev="12179">Coleman Hawkins</a></dfn>, 2024) by the league coaches. He is one of nine players in school history to be chosen for preseason all-conference honors dating to Manny Dies in 1998-99. Others include Jacob Pullen and Curtis Kelly in 2010-11, Rodney McGruder in 2012-13 and Marcus Foster in 2014-15 and Barry Brown Jr. and Dean Wade in 2018-19. Haggerty is coming off a career year in 2024-25, in which, he became the first Division I player since Ja Morant in 2018-19 to average 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals to go with 6.5 free throws per game. He ranked third nationally in both scoring (21.7 ppg.) and total points (759), while his 759 points were an AAC single-season record and the most since Dajuan Wagner (762) set the school single-season record in 2001-02. He became the first Memphis Tiger since 2008 to be named an AP All-American, while he was selected as the AAC Player of the Year, First Team All-AAC and the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 AAC Championship. K-State will play the first of two exhibition games on Friday, Oct. 24 at Missouri before hosting Division II foe Newman the following Friday (Oct. 31) at 7 p.m. The season opener is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4 against UNC Greensboro. LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash; Kansas freshman sensation <dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/darryn-peterson/16518" rel="smarttag" rev="16518">Darryn Peterson</a></dfn> has been named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year and preseason all-conference as the league announced its coaches' preseason honors today. Kansas finished sixth in the coaches' preseason poll garnering 163 points. Houston (224 points) is the coaches' favorite followed by BYU (204), Texas Tech (200), Arizona (179), and Iowa State (170). Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or student-athletes in the poll. Peterson was one of four unanimous selections by the coaches on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. A 6-foot-6 guard from Canton, Ohio, Peterson is one of Kansas' highest-ever recruited players after earning Naismith Trophy High School Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American honors following the 2024-25 season. Last season, Peterson averaged 30.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game. He ended 2024-25 ranked No. 1 by 247Sports.com and On3.com. Peterson is the third No. 1 national recruit to play for Hall of Fame coach <dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/bill-self/938" rel="smarttag" rev="938">Bill Self</a></dfn> at Kansas, joining Andrew Wiggins and Josh Jackson. The Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team remained No. 2 for the second-straight poll in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NJCAA Division I men's rankings released on Wednesday.

The second-ranked Blue Dragons ran against No. 1 Iowa Western for the first time this season last Saturday at the FHSU Tiger Open.

Iowa Western narrowly defeated the Blue Dragons 74-78. The Reivers finished second overall and the Blue Dragons were fourth.

The Dragons have been ranked in 17 consecutive polls, which is second to their record 18-straight polls from 2018 to 2020. The No. 2 national ranking matches the highest ranking ever in Blue Dragon men's cross country history.

The Blue Dragons have three Top 5 team finishes this season, including wins at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic and the Missouri Southern Stampede. Next up for Hutchinson is the Region 6 Cross Country Championships on November 24 in Colby.

This week's Top 5 has Iowa Western, Hutchinson, New Mexico Junior College, Butler and Iowa Central.

With Hutchinson and Butler, the Jayhawk Conference has four teams in the Top 10. Garden City is No. 9 and Colby is No. 10. Dodge City is No. 23 and Cloud County is No. 24.

👟 HutchCC men remain No. 2 in cross country rankings

The Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team entered national Top 10 for the second time this season on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons climbed to No. 8 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division I Women's Rankings.

Hutchinson started the season ranked No. 15 in the preseason rankings and has been ranked No. 10, No. 11 and now No. 8 in the three regular season polls.

The Dragons haven't posted a team score in their last two meets competing with only four runners.

Hutchinson had two Top 5 runners on Saturday at the FHSU Tiger Open. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/roni_mildred_mud8">Mildred Rono</a>&nbsp;was second at the Tiger open with a 5K school record time of 16:41.09. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2025-26/bios/frater_ashara_sw1a">Ashara Frater</a>&nbsp;placed fifth with a time of 17:55.43.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the 2025 Region 6 Outdoor Championships on November 24 in Colby.

Hutchinson is the highest ranked of six Jayhawk Conference teams in this week's rankings. Butler is No. 12, followed by Garden City at No. 13, Cloud County at No. 19, Dodge City at No. 21 and Colby at No. 25.

The Top 5 once again has Odessa at No. 1, Iowa Western at No. 2, New Mexico Junior College at No. 3, El Paso at No. 4 and College of Southern Idaho at No. 5.

👟 Blue Dragon women climb to No. 8 in USTFCCCA rankings

LIBERAL – Anna Swearingen recorded her first career game-winning goal as the No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team won its fourth-straight game in a 1-0 victory over Seward County on Wednesday night at Liberal High School.

Now unbeaten in six-straight games (5-0-1), the Blue Dragons reached the 10-win plateau for the 19th time in their 21-year history. Hutchinson will play host to Butler at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

For just the second time in program history, Hutchinson won back-to-back 1-0 games. The Blue Dragons defeated Dodge City 1-0 on Sunday in Dodge City.

Scoreless into the 70th minute, the Dragons had a free offensive zone kick from the left side of the goal.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2025-26/bios/puccinelli_isabela_fmo3">Isabela Puccinelli</a>&nbsp;delivered the free kick right into the foot of Swearingen, who scored her second goal of the season from point-blank range to give the Blue Dragons a 1-0 lead with 29:43 left in the second half.

Puccinelli had her eighth assist of the season.

From that point, the Blue Dragons went on to post their third-straight shutout. The Blue Dragons outshot Seward County 10-6, including 6-2 in shots on goal.

⚽ No. 18 Dragons earn 1-0 win at Seward County

AMARILLO, Texas – Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/scullion_corey_2mll">Corey Scullion</a>&nbsp;posted three-straight under-par rounds to lead the No. 5-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team on Wednesday at the West Texas A&amp;M Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational at the Amarillo Country Club.

Scullion had a very steady tournament to shoot a career best 6-under par score of 207 on the Par-71 course. Scullion competed a suspended second round Wednesday morning with a 3-under 68. Scullion had three birdies and 15 pars. He finished out with a 1-under 70, which included an eagle on the 440-yard, par-4 15th hole, his 17th hole of the round to finish at 207.

The Blue Dragons had their best round of the season in the suspended second round. Hutchinson shot a 9-under 275. The Dragons counted scores from Scullion,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/hatzenbuehler_grant_e33p">Grant Hatzenbuehler</a>&nbsp;(66),&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/hewlett_mark_9cke">Mark Hewlett</a>&nbsp;(70) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/northgraves_jack_xzbb">Jack Northgraves</a>&nbsp;(71).

Hutchinson struggled in Wednesday's final round shooting a 6-over 290 and finished tied for eighth for a team score of 852. The Dragons tied the West Texas A&amp;M "B" Team for eighth place. Odessa won the team title with a 823 team score. Odessa closed with a 270 team round. UT-Permian Basin was second with an 835.

Hatzenbuehler tied for 27th at even-par 213. Hatzenbuehler finished a sensation second round with a 5-under 66, but struggled in the third round at 5-over 76.

Northgraves tied for 55th at 219. After opening with a 76 on Tuesday, Northgraves finished with rounds of 71 and 72. Hewlett also tied for 55th at 219. He also rebounded from a tough opening-round score of 77 with rounds of 70 and 72.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/gibb_ronnie_uf6d">Ronnie Gibb</a>&nbsp;tied for 72nd at 223. He closed the second round with a 74 and posted a 78 in the final round.

Individual player&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2025-26/bios/austin_joe_x3hk">Joe Austin</a>&nbsp;tied for 47th at 218. Austin had a 70 in the second round and a 76 in the third round.

The Blue Dragons play their final fall tournament in the NJCAA National Preview on October 30 and 31 at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Hutchinson is now 12-15 overall and 4-8 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons travel to play Seward County at 2 p.m. Saturday in Liberal. Garden City is now 10-10 overall and 7-4 in the league.

Villanueva had a team-high 15 kills and hit .303 on 33 attacks to lead the Blue Dragons against the Busters. Villanueva posted her 12th double-double of the season.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) released its 2025 women’s basketball preseason polls on Wednesday, with Evangel University leading the coaches’ poll and Tabor College earning the top spot in the media rankings.

Evangel, the defending regular-season champion, received nine of 14 first-place votes from league coaches to total 161 points. Friends University followed with 147 points and two first-place votes. Tabor, the top team in the media poll, was third among coaches with 132 points.

Bethel College and Sterling College both landed in the top half of the coaches’ poll, checking in at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively. Bethel received 118 points, while Sterling earned 99 points and one first-place vote after a strong finish to last season.

McPherson College, still building under second-year coach Josh Nichols, was picked 14th by both the coaches and media after finishing near the bottom of the standings a year ago.

In the media poll, Tabor edged Friends for the No. 1 ranking with 123 total points and four first-place votes. Evangel followed in third with 112 points, while Kansas Wesleyan (110) and Saint Mary (87) rounded out the top five.

Sterling was again in the mix at No. 6, while Bethel landed at No. 7 in the media poll, reflecting the league’s depth and parity entering the 2025 campaign.

The KCAC season tips off in early November, with conference play beginning later that month.

Wichita named Best Sports-Event Host City

The Big 12 Conference fined Kansas and Texas Tech $25,000 each Wednesday following a postgame dispute stemming from the Red Raiders’ 42-17 win in Lubbock last weekend.

The league said Texas Tech was penalized for failing to stop fans from throwing tortillas onto the field — a banned tradition — while Kansas was fined for “disparaging comments” and an inaccurate claim by coach Lance Leipold that a fan threw a pocketknife at a Jayhawks staff member.

Texas Tech submitted video evidence disproving the knife allegation.

“Coach Leipold’s comments questioned the integrity and professionalism of both the conference and a member institution,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said.

Leipold later apologized, saying his remarks were made “in the heat of the moment” and that he accepts the conference’s findings. Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said Leipold should have addressed the situation privately rather than immediately after the game.

The tortilla-throwing tradition at Jones AT&amp;T Stadium, dating back to the 1990s, was officially banned before the season. Tech was flagged twice for the behavior during Saturday’s game.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas State High School Activities Association has released new football district alignments for the 2026–27 seasons, bringing changes for area schools in Reno County and surrounding areas.
