After an impressive 8-2 campaign in 2024, the Haven Wildcats are turning to a new wave of skill players while leaning on a seasoned senior class to lead the charge into the 2025 football season.

Co-head coaches Drew Thalmann and Thomas Cooprider, both entering their seventh season at the helm, have guided Haven to a 32-25 overall record, including a 3-1 mark in the Central Kansas League last fall. The Wildcats reached the second round of the Class 2A playoffs before falling to Hoisington.

“While Haven is looking at having another good group of seniors returning, most of the offensive production graduated from an 8-2 2024 team,” the staff stated in their preseason outlook.

Seniors Van Loop, Aiden Hoopes, and Nash Wray combined to score 41 of Haven’s 51 total touchdowns last season. Replacing their production will be no small task, but coaches noted that sophomore Cole Brawner gained valuable experience filling in for Loop, and junior Brogan Wray, Nash’s younger brother, is expected to take over at quarterback.

Senior tight end and linebacker Grant Patry returns as a cornerstone on both sides of the ball after earning first-team All-League and All-District linebacker honors, along with second-team All-State recognition. Patry also received honorable mention at tight end.

The Wildcats return eight starters on offense and six on defense, part of a 14-member group of returning lettermen. The offensive line features plenty of experience, including seniors Aaron Logan (6-0, 220) and Jacob Myers, along with junior Cody Holzrichter (6-3, 285), a second-team All-League selection and honorable mention All-District pick.

Defensively, Haven brings back its top tackler in Patry, along with senior linebacker Jackson Wilder, who received honorable mention All-District honors, and senior defensive lineman Brock Marks.

Other key contributors include Zade Turner (WR/DB), Brogan Wray (FS/QB), and Cole Brawner (RB/LB).

Strengths for the 2025 Wildcats include a “large experienced senior class,” a “very good strength and conditioning program,” and a solid foundation from the Haven youth program. However, the staff acknowledged concerns about the “development of underclassmen” and “inexperienced skill positions.”

Haven will once again operate a Spread Option offense and a 4-4 defensive scheme as it looks to reload and contend in Class 2A.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvadore Perez and Kyle Isbel hit two-run homers in the sixth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Washington Nationals 7-4 on Monday night.

<a href="https://x.com/RoyalsDingers/status/1955078948276031846">Perez homered</a>&nbsp;off rookie Cade Cavalli after Maikel Garcia drew a leadoff walk, tying the game at 4. Adam Frazier singled, chasing Cavalli, and Jackson Rutledge (1-2) entered and retired Randal Grichuk on a double-play grounder. Nick Loftin had a two-out single before scoring on&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/RoyalsDingers/status/1955081255650808176">Isbel's fourth homer</a>. Perez's homer was his 21st.

James Wood walked leading off the first against Bailey Falter in his home debut for the Royals after being acquired from the Pirates at the trade deadline. Josh Bell hit his 15th homer — a 422-foot, two-out shot to left-center — to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead.

Garcia, Perez and Frazier had consecutive singles to start the second for the Royals' first run. Loftin's sacrifice fly tied it 2-all.

Falter left a tie game after four innings and 76 pitches. Wood singled off Daniel Lynch IV (4-2) leading off the fifth and Paul DeJong hit his fourth homer one out later to put the Nationals up 4-2.

Mike Yastrzemski added a run in the eighth with a sac fly. Frazier finished 3 for 4 and Carlos Estévez pitched the ninth for his 30th save.

Bobby Witt Jr. went 2 for 5 in his return to the Royals lineup after back tightness forced him to miss his second game of the season on Sunday.

Kansas City won the opener of a 10-game homestand and moved to 59-60 on the season.

Isbel's go-ahead shot came after he popped out in foul territory on a 3-1 pitch with one out and runners on second and third in a tie game in the second inning.

The Royals have scored 441 runs, fewest in the AL.

Nationals LHP Mitchell Parker (7-12, 5.43 ERA) will start Tuesday opposite Royals RHP Michael Wacha (6-9, 3.36).

With six total players returning from an 11-2-7 campaign in 2024, the Blue Dragons were No. 15 in the 2025 NJCAA Division Preseason Rankings released on Monday.

This is the third-straight season the Blue Dragons were in the preseason NJCAA rankings. That extends a program-long streak for being ranked in the national preseason poll. The 2023 Blue Dragon started the season at No. 18 and the 2024 Blue Dragons were ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll. This is the seventh time in program history Blue Dragon women's soccer has been a preseason nationally ranked team.

Hutchinson is one of three Jayhawk Conference teams to be ranked in the 2025 preseason national rankings.

⚽ HutchCC opens season No. 15 in NJCAA preseason rankings

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs starting cornerback Jaylen Watson was placed in the concussion protocol and backup safety Deon Bush lost for the season to a ruptured Achilles tendon in what proved to be a costly first preseason game for the Kansas City defensive backfield.

Watson missed most of the 2024 regular season after breaking his tibia and fibula in a Week 7 win at San Francisco. But after undergoing surgery, the fourth-year pro managed to make it back in time to help the Chiefs on their playoff run.

Bush has appeared in 24 games over the past three seasons in Kansas City. He spent his first six years in the NFL in Chicago.

In other injury news, defensive end Janarius Robinson — who’d been having a good camp as he tried to make the roster — broke his foot during the preseason opener. Wide receiver Marquise Brown remained out of practice with a foot and ankle issue, while backup offensive lineman Ethan Driskell was absent Monday following an appendectomy.

The Chiefs have two more practices at Missouri Western this week before breaking camp. They play their second preseason game Friday night in Seattle, then return to their practice facility in Kansas City for the remainder of the preseason.

Brown left practice in a cart after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-hollywood-brown-nfl-cf1d80c793e3bf8e753a83bddd255d9a">hurting his right ankle July 29</a>. At the time, the injury appeared to be minor, but “Hollywood” Brown only recently started to run again. That has thrown into question whether Brown — who missed nearly all of last season to a shoulder injury — will be ready when Kansas City opens the regular season against the Chargers on Sept. 5 in Brazil.

“It’s not really a high-ankle sprain. It’s more the ankle-foot area,” Reid said Monday. “He’s making great progress, though. He’s up and running now a little bit. That’s a positive. I don’t think he’s too far off but we’ll see. He’s doing good.”

His status could be important for the Chiefs should fellow wide receiver Rashee Rice get suspended to start the season.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rashee-rice-charges-dallas-crash-kansas-city-chiefs-d71cfd66fabfc151111d67ea1bfa0f74">Rice pleaded</a>&nbsp;guilty in July to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said, Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail, along with paying victims’ out-of-pocket medical expenses totaling about $115,000.

Once the case was settled, the NFL began its investigation into the incident. It could mete out its punishment at any time.

The one positive for Kansas City is that wide receiver is one of the deepest positions on the team. Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie Jalen Royals are locks to make the roster alongside Brown and Rice, while Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio, Skyy Moore, Jason Brownlee and Elijah Badger are in a tight competition for the last few roster spots.

🏈 Chiefs lose safety Deon Bush for season; cornerback Jaylen Watson in concussion protocol

For the first time, Texas will open a college football season ranked No. 1 in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">The Associated Press Top 25.</a>

The Longhorns hardly have a mandate in the poll released Monday:&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">They edged out Penn State</a>&nbsp;by just five points in the closest preseason vote since 1998.

Texas received 25 first-place votes and 1,552 points to give the Southeastern Conference the preseason No. 1 team for a record fifth straight year. The Nittany Lions got 23 first-place votes and 1,547 points for their&nbsp;highest preseason ranking since they were No. 1 to open the 1997 season.

The Longhorns face a major test right away. Their Aug. 30 opener at defending champion and third-ranked Ohio State is a rematch of last season’s College Football Playoff semifinal, a 28-14 Buckeyes win in the Cotton Bowl.

The Buckeyes received 11 first-place votes from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">the panel of 65 media members</a>&nbsp;who cover college football. No. 4 Clemson got four first-place votes and No. 5 Georgia got one.

Notre Dame, Oregon (which got the final first-place vote), Alabama, LSU and Miami round out the top 10.

The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the preseason Top 25, most ever by a conference and one more than a year ago. The SEC has four teams in the top 10 for the second straight year.

The Big Ten, which has won the last two national championships, has two of the top three teams in the poll for the third straight year and six in the Top 25 for the third year in a row.

Four Big 12 teams are ranked, with defending conference champion Arizona State the highest at No. 11. The Atlantic Coast Conference has three, led by Clemson.

“Arch Mania” is at a fever pitch in Texas with Arch Manning now the undisputed starting quarterback.

The Longhorns have been on an upward trajectory since they were 5-7 in 2021, Steve Sarkisian’s first season. They have won 25 of their last 30 games and reached two straight CFP semifinals. Last year, they were ranked No. 1 four of five weeks from mid-September to mid-October, and they reached the SEC championship game in their first season in the conference.

“But this is a new year, new faces, new team, and obviously expectations are high for our program,” Sarkisian said at SEC media days. “I’m not naive to that. I don’t put my head in the sand, and expectations are very high. But I also say we’re the University of Texas, and the standard is the standard here, and that’s competing for championships year in and year out.”

Twelve Texas players were taken in the NFL draft, including three-first-round picks, but elite recruiting and additions from the transfer portal should alleviate concerns about losses on the offensive line and at receiver. The defense brings back plenty of talent.

With a promising core of returning playmakers and an injection of new energy on defense, the Lyons Lions are aiming to take a significant step forward in 2025 under fourth-year head coach Carl Nolan.

Coming off a 2-7 season in 2024, the Lions return a strong nucleus on both sides of the ball and are hopeful their experienced upperclassmen and rising underclassmen can help spark a turnaround.

“We are hoping to build around some returning starters,” Nolan said. “While returning a handful of starters, we will be looking at our younger classes to step up and do big things for us.”

The Lions return seven starters on offense and eight on defense, including standout Xander Young, who rushed for 600 yards and 5 touchdowns on 99 carries last season. Young was also a defensive anchor, racking up 59 tackles, including 3 for loss.

Senior Hendrix Starbuck was another two-way contributor in 2024. He led the team in tackles with 67 stops (41 solo), added 4 TFLs, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions, and returned one for a touchdown. Jace Thompson (22 tackles, 2 INTs) and Quanick Hamilton (18 catches, 285 yards, 3 TDs) also return as key contributors on both sides of the ball.

Wideout Detrell Stanley hauled in 9 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Grissom, Tegan Link, and Joshsuan Hamilton round out a deep returning unit. Lyons also brings back 1st Team All-League kicker Cain Villasenor, giving them a valuable special teams weapon.

Offensively, Lyons plans to play fast and take what the defense gives them, operating with a flexible and opportunistic approach.

“This year we hope to be exciting and explosive on offense,” Nolan said. “We have a lot of key new pieces and have the ability to play fast. Our sophomore and junior classes are talented and have us excited about the future of the program.”

On defense, Lyons will debut a new 4-2-5 scheme, one focused on speed, physicality, and adaptability.

“A great defense must be aggressive and be able to blitz, while being completely sound in doing so,” Nolan said. “We must be able to identify every offensive set a team displays and both respect their offensive strengths while taking advantage of their weaknesses.”

The Lions aim to create a defensive identity built on discipline, energy, and rapid adjustments, with an emphasis on playing aggressive, fast, and fundamentally sound.

“Having the ability for a defense to recognize and adjust to a different style of offense on the fly is critical,” Nolan added. “A great defense is also able to have a short memory and learn from mistakes while on the fly.”

As the Lions build toward the future, they’ll lean on their veteran core while pushing their younger athletes into key roles early.

Nolan, who enters his fourth season with a 6-21 record at Lyons, is joined on staff by assistants Cody Bowers and Gabe Leavitt.

The Lions will look to set the tone early in non-district play before battling through a competitive district and North Central Activities Association league schedule.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Hutchinson’s Ty Adkins is set to make his debut on one of golf’s grandest amateur stages Monday at the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship in San Francisco.

The 2023 Hutchinson High graduate will tee off at 12:46 p.m. Pacific time, that’s 2:46 p.m. Hutchinson time, on the Olympic Club’s Ocean Course. He’s paired with Garrett Rank of Canada, who is also a National Hockey League referee, and Billy Davis of San Diego, who just completed his freshman season at Auburn University.

The same three will then tee off at 7:31 a.m. Pacific time, 9:31 a.m. Hutchinson time, on Tuesday.

Adkins, who recently transferred from Wichita State to South Dakota State, earned his spot with a <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/1465d6b3-6069-4f76-aa25-d4777a81c51b">6-under-par 66 in final qualifying at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park</a>. He tied for medalist honors after a blistering back nine that included a bunker hole-out eagle on the 17th hole.

It’s been a whirlwind month for Adkins, who was seventh on a waitlist just to get into his first qualifier. He advanced through local qualifying in Nebraska before sealing his trip to San Francisco.

The championship begins with two rounds of stroke play, Monday and Tuesday, before the top 64 advance to match play on the Lake Course. The event runs through August 17th.

ATLANTA (AP) — Jen Pawol breezed through Sunday’s Marlins-Braves game as if breaking a gender barrier was just another day on the job.

Considering Pawol became the first female umpire to work behind the plate in the majors, making unprecedented history appear to be routine was especially impressive.

“I think Jen did a really nice job,” Miami manager Clayton McCullough said after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/marlins-braves-score-pawol-e29fc9ee0d158488f23e8dabb244bc35">Atlanta’s 7-1 win</a>&nbsp;over the Marlins.

Asked about Pawol’s calls, Wentz said, “I try not to focus on the zone, to be honest with you. ... I thought it was good though.”

There were few opportunities for disputes as Wentz and Miami starting pitcher Cal Quantrill combined for only three strikeouts. The first called third strike came in the fifth inning, when Pawol used a fist pump when calling out Miami’s Kyle Stowers on a pitch that was close to the edge of the plate.

McCullough was seen in the Marlins dugout with his palms held up as if asking about the pitch call. He said after the game it’s not unusual to question a close called strike.

“Over the course of the game, there are a number of times that you just are going to be asking for clarity on one, if you aren’t sure,” McCullough said. “So it could have been that.”

The 48-year-old Pawol was called up as a rover umpire, so her next assignment in the majors has not been announced.

“I wish her the best moving forward as she continues to, I’m sure, hopefully one day be up full time, you know, a permanent big league umpire,” McCullough said.

Pawol also received positive reviews from Braves manager Brian Snitker, who on Saturday said, “You can tell she knows what she does.”

Pawol’s work in the minor leagues began in 2016 when she was assigned to the Gulf Coast League. She worked in the Triple-A championship game in 2023 and in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/woman-umpire-jen-pawol-54232edf273348ec611d89041a040a53">spring training games</a>&nbsp;in 2024 and again this year.

“We certainly didn’t call her up from A ball, right?” Quantrill said. “So yeah, I’m sure she was well prepared. And like I said I think, you know, part of the game moving forward is that if this is normal then we’re going to treat it normal, too. So, you know, I thought it was fine. I think she did she did a quality job. ... And yeah, I think she’d be very proud of herself. And, you know, it’s kind of a cool little thing to be part of.”

Pawol spoke to reporters on Saturday when she said, “The dream actually came true today. I’m still living in it. I’m so grateful to my family and Major League Baseball for creating such an incredible work environment. … I’m just so thankful.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Quarterback Patrick Mahomes spent some time before Saturday's preseason game running up and down the Kansas City Chiefs sideline, yelling, jumping and psyching himself up for his first game action since last season's Super Bowl.

He was ready — for all 48 seconds of it.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champ entering his ninth season, took advantage of a short field after the Arizona Cardinals fumbled the opening kickoff,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Chiefs/status/1954335253960458350">hitting Jason Brownlee for a 1-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;and an early 7-0 lead less than one minute into the game.

Arizona rallied for a 20-17 win over Kansas City in the preseason opener for both teams.

Mahomes said coach Andy Reid told him before the game that he'd play just one series, but it was an even shorter night than he imagined.

“One series turned into one throw,” Mahomes said, grinning.

The TD pass was Mahomes' only completion of the game, ending a brief, effective outing. Backup Gardner Minshew took over on the next series and ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Harrison Butker made a 58-yard field goal.

Mahomes' final line: 1-for-1 passing for 1 yard and one touchdown. The three-time defending AFC champions were playing for the first time&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-eagles-chiefs-score-e2ff209c074a00a6faff39750ff048f8">since losing last season's Super Bowl 40-22</a>&nbsp;to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“There were some good things,” Reid said. “I thought the (starters) played well when they were in, they were sharp. After that, we were too sloppy. Too many penalties, going backward.”

While Kansas City got off to a good start, Arizona did not.

The Cardinals fumbled their first two kickoff returns, though they recovered the second one. Kyler Murray — playing in his first preseason game since 2021 — was intercepted on the offense's opening drive on a pass intended for second-year receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Murray's second drive was hindered when tight end Tip Reiman was called for a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness. The miscue was part of the reason the Cardinals had to settle for a 33-yard field goal by Chad Ryland.

Murray chose to remain positive about the outing, saying that even with the mistakes, it was good to get on the field and play at game speed.

“You can’t replicate it in practice, moving around with the speed that you’re moving, going left to right, lateral, bodies moving. I had fun. I had a lot of fun out there,” Murray said.

Murray played two drives, completing 7 of 8 passes for 96 yards and the interception. Tight end Trey McBride caught one pass for 21 yards and Harrison had a catch for 15 yards.

The Cardinals trailed 14-3 early but Emari Demercado caught a 43-yard touchdown pass to cut the margin to 14-10. Xavier Weaver caught a 1-yard touchdown pass that gave the Cardinals a 17-14 lead at halftime.

Both touchdowns were thrown by Arizona's new backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who completed 5 of 8 passes for 81 yards. The Cardinals outgained the Chiefs 355 yards to 249.

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon echoed Murray's positive outlook, even after the early mistakes.

“The team — not just Kyler — understood why we're doing what we're doing tonight,” Gannon said. "They were excited to get under the lights. That's the AFC champs coming in here. Andy Reid — Hall of Fame coach. They were excited to play a really good team, get lathered up and bang a little on someone other than themselves.

“It was good to see our guys ready to roll.”

The Cardinals — who are trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021 — finished last season with an 8-9 record, which was a four-win improvement over the previous season. Arizona revamped its defensive front during the offseason, adding Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell.

One pass, one TD: Mahomes, Chiefs get off to good start in 20-17 preseason loss to Cardinals

After opening last season with seven straight wins and posting its best record since 2017, Hesston enters the 2025 football season with high expectations and an experienced core ready to push the Swathers deeper into the Class 3A playoffs.

Head coach Tyson Bauerle, now in his ninth season at Hesston and tenth overall, brings a 58-40 career record, including 48-31 with the Swathers. His team went 8-2 in 2024, falling just short in the regional round with a 9-7 loss to Scott City after a season highlighted by dominant wins over league and district opponents.

“Swather Football enters 2025 with high expectations,” Bauerle said. “2024 was the best start to the season (started 7-0) since 2014 and matches the most wins since 2017. However, Swather Football 2025 plans to end the streak of 3 Regional Championship Round losses in a row and begin a new streak of reaching further into the playoffs.”

Despite graduating 11 seniors, Hesston returns 23 letter winners, including seven offensive starters and six on defense. Leading the charge is junior quarterback Jerick Humphreys, who stepped in last fall due to an injury and threw for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“Jerick led the offense to a highly productive and balanced year in his first season as a starter,” Bauerle said. “The offense rushed for 1,841 yards and passed for 1,687 yards averaging 32.4 points per game.”

Humphreys is supported by a talented backfield of senior Blayne Wilson and junior Tim Rhodes, who both return with experience and complementary skill sets. Fullback Josh Duerksen is also expected to take on a larger role.

“Replacing Karter (Gonzalez) will be tough,” Bauerle said, “but the skill sets of all three returning backs match well with Humphreys’ skill set.”

The offensive line features standout seniors Ethan Coutre and Brody Martin, and juniors Gunner Goalden and Levi Flaming. Bauerle said the competition along the line this summer will determine how the pieces fit to form a cohesive unit.

“Although we return experience up front, we need to get the right combo to be a complete unit,” he said. “We have some depth but the best OL are also the best DL.”

Hesston’s leading receiver, senior Daxon Deering, returns as a home-run threat. Tight end Drew Bartell adds size and blocking strength, while players like Max Phillips, Kason Landes, and Eli Haug offer flexibility and depth.

“Daxon Deering had a breakout season and is a deep threat on every play,” Bauerle said. “We’ll need 3-4 guys to step up to be a threat in our passing game to complement Deering.”

On defense, Hesston returns a formidable front in Coutre and Goalden, who combined for more than 120 tackles, 10 sacks and 19 tackles for loss.

“This returning combo might be the two best DL in the area,” Bauerle said. “Coutre is one of the most explosive players this staff has had. At 6’3, 230 lbs, he was the anchor of one of the fastest 4x100 squads last track season. That is impressive for a returning All-State Defensive Lineman.”

Linebacker Josh Duerksen is the lone returning starter at that position but is expected to be a leader on and off the field. In the secondary, Jamison Kohl, Gavin Larson, and Eli Haug form a seasoned group with multiple years of starting experience.

“The defense showed major improvements last season,” Bauerle said. “With six guys returning overall and many others with experience, this group could continue what was built last year.”

Hesston’s defense allowed two touchdowns or fewer in seven of 10 games, including two shutouts.

On special teams, senior Ethan Schrag returns as placekicker after earning All-League honorable mention. He converted 38 of 42 PATs and may take over punting duties. Deering and Wilson return as the team’s primary returners.

“Depth was a major factor last season,” Bauerle added. “We need some sophomores and juniors to fill some roles on both sides of the ball to help create depth again.”

Cameron (6-5) pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and striking out four. Carlos Estévez struck out two in the ninth for his 29th save.

The Twins left 10 men on base and were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Garcia broke the scoreless tie in the third with an RBI single, and the Royals added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Jonathan India.

Twins starting pitcher Bailey Ober (4-7) pitched six innings, giving up four hits and allowing one run.

Second baseman Adam Frazier scored on India's hit in the ninth, his 30th run of the season.

Twins catcher Matt Jeffers extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He went 3 for 4, with one strikeout.

Ryan Bergert (1-1) will start for the Royals in the final game of the series against the Twins tomorrow afternoon. The Twins have not yet announced their starter.

“I think we have a very hungry group of young men,” said Weber, who begins his 23rd season overall as a head coach, but his first at Sedgwick. “Our hope is to execute at an even higher level in the future.”

Sedgwick finished 8-2 in 2024, going 5-1 in the Heart of America League and 3-1 in district play. The Cardinals return six starters on offense and five on defense, highlighted by a veteran core of skill players and offensive linemen that have helped maintain Sedgwick’s fast-paced spread identity.

Seniors Owen Luper (589 yards, 5 TDs) and Noah Little (469 yards, 7 TDs) lead a dynamic receiver group, while Maverick Stauth returns to the backfield after averaging 6.2 yards per carry and scoring four touchdowns last season. Stauth also led the defense with 86 tackles, 4 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.

Luper and Little anchor the secondary, while Henry Morse, Max Lynch, and others will take on larger roles at linebacker and along the line.“Our defense needs to hold opponents under two scores and be the best tackling team in the state,” Weber said. “Special teams being special and an advantage is critical to our success next year.”Despite stepping into the role in late May, Weber said the summer program has been strong and productive. “We’ve taken some major steps in the right direction,” he said. “Our linemen have really done a great job putting in work, and our skill players are committed to honing the passing game that Sedgwick has been known for.”Weber inherits a program that’s made the playoffs in each of the last several seasons and is known for its speed, discipline, and offensive firepower. His staff includes seasoned assistants Doug Mabry, Tim Hendrickson, Carey McFann, and new quarterbacks/corners coach Cory Ferralez, who brings high-level 7-on-7 experience to the mix.As for 2025, the expectations remain high.“Our number one goal is to go 1-0 each week,” Weber said. “We want to be a team that overachieves and is recognized for its speed, toughness, discipline, and will to win.
