HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College let a big lead slip away Wednesday night, falling 91-89 in overtime to Independence at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The loss was the fifth straight for Hutchinson, which dropped to 10-11 overall and 5-10 in Jayhawk Conference play after leading most of the night. The Blue Dragons built a 17-point advantage late in the first half and still led by 15 midway through the second half.

Hutchinson controlled the opening stretch behind hot shooting and steady pressure, taking a 42-30 lead into halftime. The Blue Dragons pushed the margin to 42-25 late in the first half and kept Independence from finding a consistent rhythm early.

Daleron Thomas led Hutchinson with 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting, adding four assists. Lolo Rudolph finished with 18 points and seven assists, and Bobby Cannon added 17 points, knocking down two 3-pointers and going 7 for 7 at the free-throw line.

Chudier Dorar was a presence inside with 15 rebounds to go with seven points, and Anthony Alston scored 10 points. Hutchinson shot 46.9% from the field but left points at the line, going 21 of 31, and committed 15 turnovers.

Independence chipped away throughout the second half and finally pulled even in the final minute. Knox hit a jumper with 45 seconds left to tie it at 81, and after a scramble near the rim, Knox converted a tip-in with 19 seconds remaining to put the Pirates ahead 83-81.

Hutchinson answered quickly to force overtime. Thomas scored on a driving layup with eight seconds left, tying the game at 83-83 after Rudolph set him up for the finish.

In overtime, the teams traded baskets and neither side led by more than two until the closing seconds. Thomas made two free throws with 10 seconds left to tie it at 89-89.

Knox delivered the final blow with four-tenths of a second to play, knocking down the game-winning jumper from the left baseline to lift Independence.

Independence was led by David Wilson with 21 points and Sterling Knox with 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. The Blue Dragons return to the road Saturday to face Seward County in Liberal, with tipoff set for 4 p.m.

🏀 Late rally sinks Hutchinson men in OT loss to Independence

KaMyra Barber recorded her third double-double of the season and delivered a career night on the glass, finishing with 18 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and six assists in 24 minutes. Barber shot 6 of 11 from the floor, hit a 3-pointer and went 5 of 5 at the free-throw line.

Katie Duncan added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Whitney Brown scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and knocked down all three of her 3-point attempts. Noelle Anthon chipped in 12 points, and Kaia Smith also scored 12 off the bench.

Hutchinson controlled the game defensively, holding Independence to 27.7 percent shooting and forcing 18 turnovers. The Blue Dragons also dominated the rebounding battle, 53-32, and turned consistent pressure into easy scoring opportunities throughout the night.

Independence was led by Danaiya Stillwell-Smith with 17 points. Mimi White added 15 points on four 3-pointers and pulled down eight rebounds, while Nyah Chandler finished with 11 points and Jade Oliney handed out seven assists.

The Blue Dragons opened the game on a 21-0 run bridging the first quarter and never let the Pirates establish any rhythm, limiting Independence to 13 points in the first half.

🏀 Fast start fuels No. 20 Hutchinson women past Independence

The CBS Sports Classic has added Kansas to its annual college basketball showcase, joining Kentucky, North Carolina and Ohio State as the four participating programs.

The signature doubleheader, which began in 2014, is broadcast on the CBS Television Network and streamed on Paramount+. The event has been extended through 2029 with all four schools.

The 2026 CBS Sports Classic will be played Saturday, Dec. 19, at Madison Square Garden. Matchups will feature Kansas Jayhawks vs. Ohio State and North Carolina vs. Kentucky.

Future dates and pairings have also been announced:

Kansas will also continue to compete in the State Farm Champions Classic, which has been extended through November 2028. The 2026 event is set for Nov. 10 at the United Center in Chicago and will feature Kansas vs. Kentucky. Kansas will face Michigan State on Nov. 9, 2027, and Duke on Nov. 7, 2028.

In addition, Kansas will participate in the Players Era Men’s Championship in Las Vegas during Thanksgiving week in November 2026. The field for that event has expanded to include eight Big 12 teams.

The Blue Dragons were picked second in the 2026 Jayhawk Conference preseason coaches poll, which was released on Wednesday. Hutchinson also start at No 24 in the NJCAA Division I Baseball Preseason Rankings, which were released last week.

Brock Nehls begins his third season with the Blue Dragons after two highly successful campaigns that have netted 91 total wins over the past two seasons.

In 2025, Hutchinson went 40-21, which included an 18-14 league mark.

Hutchinson is one of three KJCCC teams ranked in the preseason NJCAA Top 25. Johnson County is No. 12 and Cowley is No. 16. Salt Lake is the preseason pick to win the 2026 NJCAA championship.

Hutchinson opens its season on February 7-8 when Des Moines Area Community College comes to Hobart-Detter Field for a three-game series.

⚾ HutchCC picked 2nd in KJCCC West preseason poll

Thanks to the weekend winter storm and the postponement of last Saturday's game against Butler, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team faces a 48-hour turnaround for a Wednesday Jayhawk Conference contest.

Now ranked No. 20 in the NJCAA national rankings, the Blue Dragons (15-5, 10-4 KJCCC) plays host to the Independence Pirates (4-16, 1-13 KJCCC) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed for free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Hutchinson's short turnaround includes rebounding from a tough 56-52 loss to now No. 4 Butler. Since, John Ontjes has been the head coach at Hutchinson, the Blue Dragons are 67-6 following a loss.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2025-26/bios/wilson_jaden_nnxf">Jaden Wilson</a>&nbsp;had a team- and career-high nine rebound. Over her last three games, Wilson has averaged 9.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. In her 10 games as a starter, Wilson has averaged 4.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Independence has lost its last nine games after earning its only conference victory, a 61-55 win over Fort Hays Tech Northwest on December 3 in Goodland.

The Pirates also had the same 48-hour window to prepare for Hutchinson. Independence lost 70-33 to Coffeyville on Monday night. Mimi White and Phillipa Ferguson had nine points lead to lead the Pirates against the Red Ravens.

Hutchinson earned its eighth-straight win over Independence on November 25 when the Blue Dragons defeated the Pirates 83-46 at Independence.

🏀 Blue Dragons face quick turnaround to meet Independence

The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons face another of the Jayhawk Conference's top offensive teams on Wednesday night in an attempt to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Blue Dragons (10-10, 5-9 KJCCC) take on the Independence Pirates (11-8, 9-5 KJCCC) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live and for free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 7:15 p.m.

Both Hutchinson and Independence had 48 hours to prepare for Wednesday's games because last weekend's winter storm moved last Saturday's games to Monday.

Hutchinson lost to No. 25 Butler 102-73 on Monday at the Sports Arena. Independence upended Coffeyville 81-67.

The Blue Dragons faced Butler without leading scorer&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/shaw_kyrell_v507">Kyrell Shaw</a>, who missed the game with an injury. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/thomas_daleron_yjqw">Daleron Thomas</a>&nbsp;led Hutchinson with 22 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/cannon_bobby_almy">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;had 19 points and seven rebounds. The Dragons were stung by 17 3-pointers and 27 turnovers committed.

Hutchinson is now in 11th place in the Jayhawk Conference after a four-game losing streak, the first since the 2022-23 season.

After starting its season 1-3, the Pirates have won 10 of their last 15 games and have moved into a tie for second place with Dodge City at 9-5 after Monday's win over Coffeyville.

Independence shot 50.0 percent, while holding Coffeyville to 34.4 percent from the floor. Trae Lewis knocked down four 3-pointers and scored 22 points in the Independence win.

The Blue Dragons have dropped three games in a row to Independence to tie a series-record skid against the Pirates. Independence also won three in a row in the 1983 and 1984 seasons.

Hutchinson lost to Independence 88-80 in the first meeting of the season on November 25 at Independence.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/cannon_bobby_almy">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;had a career-high 38 points in the first meeting, hitting 16 of 27 overall shooting.

Cannon has scored 80 points in three games against the Pirates, including two 30-point games in his career.

🏀 Blue Dragon men look to snap skid against high-scoring Pirates

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State softball was picked to finish third by the league's coaches in the American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced Wednesday morning.

The Shockers received 59 total votes, finishing behind Florida Atlantic and South Florida. The reigning regular season champion Owls received eight first place votes, while the Bulls had the other two.

Wichita State brings back only seven returners from last year's team, while welcoming 14 newcomers into the mix. Pitcher Ryley Nihart is back after earning American Conference Co-Freshman of the Year honors.

The Shockers open the season at the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas, Feb. 6-8. Wichita State will play five games over three days against Mississippi State, Baylor, Northwestern State and New Mexico.

🥎 Shockers picked 3rd in American Conference preseason poll

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Andover Central edged Buhler in the varsity boys competition while Buhler swept the remaining team races Tuesday in a bowling dual at The Alley in Hutchinson.

Andover Central won the varsity boys title with a team total of 3,463, finishing ahead of Buhler’s 3,374. The Jaguars were led by Gunnar Whitney, who rolled a meet-high 722 series to place first individually. Teammate Evan Light added a 682 series, while Colin Light finished with a 610.

Buhler placed two bowlers in the top five, led by Logan Brown’s 680 series, good for third overall. Jackson Sponsel followed with a 636 series as the Crusaders stayed within striking distance throughout the match.

Buhler claimed the varsity girls victory, totaling 2,513 to Andover Central’s 2,216. Macy Miller paced the Crusaders with a 510 series, finishing second overall, while Aubrey Ewing rolled a 508 and Cheyann Geesling added a 424. Andover Central’s Addison Crumley earned top individual honors with a 566 series.

The Crusaders also won both junior varsity contests. Buhler’s JV boys posted a 2,153 team total, led by Brennan Geilenfeldt’s 572 series and KJ Spurlin’s 570, to top Andover Central’s 1,542. Buhler swept the top three individual spots in the JV boys standings.

In the JV girls competition, Buhler finished with a team score of 1,273. Baylee Krase led the way with a 414 series, followed by Brynn Treaster’s 332 and Lelani Strodtman’s 268.

The dual included traditional Baker games, with Andover Central’s varsity boys edging Buhler in Baker play, while Buhler held the advantage in the girls Bakers to secure the overall team wins on that side.&nbsp;

DERBY, Kan. (AP) — Derby turned a competitive opening into a runaway victory, defeating Hutchinson 76-47 on Tuesday night at Derby High School.

The Panthers’ latest win over the Salthawks looked much different than last Friday’s early blitz in the McPherson Invitational Tournament semifinals. Hutchinson came out sharp, jumping to a 14-6 lead in the opening minutes. Derby answered with a 6-0 run to close the gap, trailing just 14-12 after the first quarter.

From there, the Panthers took control. Derby used balanced scoring and steady defensive pressure to stretch the margin to 38-23 by halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.

Greg Stiger led Derby with 20 points, pacing an offense that consistently found quality looks. Hutchinson was led by Lamar Govain with 14 points.

Both teams will return to McPherson on Saturday to wrap up the McPherson Invitational Tournament. Derby is set to face Wichita Bishop Carroll in the championship game, while Hutchinson will meet Overland Park Blue Valley in the third-place game at 1 p.m. at the McPherson Roundhouse.

🏀Derby uses big quarter to sink Salthawks

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Honor Huff scored 17 points and Treysen Eaglestaff scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds and West Virginia beat Kansas State 59-54 on Tuesday night.

Brenen Lorient scored 10 points for West Virginia (14-7, 5-3 Big 12), which has won three of four and six of its last nine games. It was the third fewest points scored this season for Kansas State.

P.J. Haggerty scored 16 points, David Castillo scored 15 points and Nate Johnson 13 for Kansas State (10-11, 1-7). The Wildcats have lost seven of their last eight.

West Virginia led 57-54 with 22 seconds left before the Jayhawks intentionally fouled Huff. He missed the front end of a one-and-one and Kansas State took possession.

Lorient blocked Haggerty's layup attempt with 14 seconds left. Kansas State maintained possession but Haggerty's 3-point attempt with 10 seconds left was off the mark.

Taj Manning fouled Huff and he made both foul shots with eight seconds left to seal the win.

Kansas State: Hosts No. 8 Iowa State on Sunday.

Rojas, 31, has played in parts of seven Major League seasons, including a career-high 142 games in 2024 with Seattle, where he collected 29 extra-base hits, scored 48 runs and stole 10 bases. He most recently played in 69 games for the White Sox in 2025.

Toro, a 29-year-old switch hitter, is a veteran of seven Major League seasons with Houston (2019-21), Seattle (2021-22), Milwaukee (2023), the Athletics (2024) and Boston (2025). He has played in 442 games across his seven campaigns, posting a .641 OPS while playing every defensive position except catcher, shortstop and center field.

⚾ Royals invite 25 players to Major League Spring Training

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Tuesday that architectural firms MANICA and Populous have advanced as finalists in the competitive design process for the franchise’s new stadium.

The selection follows an extensive RFQ and RFP process and moves the project into its final design phase. Both firms have designed major sports and entertainment venues around the world.

The announcement marks the first major update since Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt confirmed an agreement last month for a new stadium to be built in Kansas.

The $3 billion fixed-roof stadium and surrounding mixed-use development will be located in Wyandotte County and is scheduled to open for the 2031 NFL season. The project is expected to generate more than 20,000 jobs and $4.4 billion in economic impact during construction, with more than 3,500 jobs and $1 billion in annual economic impact once completed.

The stadium will be funded through a public-private partnership, with 60 percent financed through STAR bonds and the Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund and 40 percent privately funded. The Hunt family is also committing an additional $1 billion toward related development.

Beginning her 22nd season at Hutchinson, head coach Jaime Rose returns five starters and seven overall players from the 2025 Jayhawk Conference co-championship team. The 2025 Blue Dragons went 37-11 last season, including a 27-5 KJCCC record that netted the second conference title in three seasons for the Blue Dragons.

The 2026 Blue Dragons return four full-time position starters.

Center fielder&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2025-26/bios/kruger_kaibryn_43ko">Kaibryn Kruger</a>&nbsp;was a second-team all-KJCCC performer who hit .451 (74 hits), 75 runs scores, seven homers, 50 RBIs and 41 stolen bases.

🥎 Dragons picked second in KJCCC preseason poll

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson’s losing streak reached four games Monday night as No. 25 Butler poured in 17 3-pointers and cruised past the Blue Dragons 102-73 in Jayhawk Conference play at the Sports Arena.

Playing without injured leading scorer Kyrell Shaw (22 points per game), Hutchinson fell behind early and never found a rhythm on either end. Butler scored 51 points in the first half, led 51-36 at the break and stayed on the gas after halftime, matching that first-half output with another 51 points in the second half to turn the game into a runaway.

The loss dropped Hutchinson to 10-10 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

Daleron Thomas led the Blue Dragons with 22 points and seven assists, getting to the line often and going 8 of 10 on free throws. Bobby Cannon added 19 points and seven rebounds, Anthony Alston scored 13 and Chudier Dorar contributed seven points with three blocks.

Butler (14-6, 10-4) spread the scoring around with four players in double figures and a deep rotation that kept the pressure on. Devin Kerr and Aiven Riley scored 14 apiece, Tim Walker II added 14 off the bench and Tristan Hankins finished with 13. Kerr also had four steals and the Grizzlies came away with 20, helping fuel transition chances and extra possessions.

Butler shot 44.0% from the field and 35.4% from 3-point range (17 of 48). Hutchinson shot 44.8% overall but struggled to keep pace from the perimeter, going 5 of 19 from long range, and the Blue Dragons were undone by 27 turnovers.

Hutchinson’s best stretch came early in the second half when it scored on consecutive possessions to trim the deficit briefly, but Butler answered with another wave of 3-pointers and pulled the margin back to double digits quickly. The Grizzlies had 16 offensive rebounds and finished with 40 total boards, repeatedly extending possessions and preventing Hutchinson from building any sustained momentum.

Hutchinson will look to regroup Wednesday when it hosts Independence at the Sports Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Blue Dragons stayed within striking distance for much of the first half and trailed just 26-21 at the break, but Butler seized control after halftime by outscoring Hutchinson 22-13 in the third quarter. The Grizzlies built a double-digit lead during that stretch and were able to withstand a late Hutchinson push in the final period.

Butler (19-1, 13-1) was led by Mya Mayberry, who scored a game-high 36 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Mayberry connected on eight 3-pointers and accounted for more than half of Butler’s scoring. The Grizzlies finished 9 of 21 from beyond the arc and shot 42.9 percent from long range, providing a key edge in a tightly contested game.

Hutchinson (15-5, 10-4) struggled to find consistent offense, shooting 35.1 percent from the field and 32.0 percent from 3-point range. Noelle Anthon led the Blue Dragons with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Whitney Brown added 11 points and five assists. The Blue Dragons (10-9, 5-8 KJCCC) takes on No. 25 Butler (13-6, 9-4 KJCCC) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The game was pushed back 48 hours because of Saturday's winter storm.

The Blue Dragons are in the midst of their first three-game losing streak since the 2022-23 season. Last Wednesday, the Blue Dragons battling high-scoring Garden City in a 97-93 loss.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/shaw_kyrell_v507">Kyrell Shaw</a>&nbsp;had his fourth 30-point game in the last five games with 35 points. While outshooting and out-rebounding the Broncbusters, the Blue Dragons weren't able to overcome 13 pointers.

Hutchinson now faces the No. 1 scoring and No. 1 3-point shooting team in the KJCCC.

Butler is averaging 108.6 points per game and are making 13.9 3-pointers per contest while shooting 35.6 percent from distance.

The Blue Dragons do own a victory over the Grizzlies this season. Hutchinson traveled to El Dorado on November 22 and defeated the Grizzlies 83-82.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/cannon_bobby_almy">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;hit a last-second 3-pointer to boost the Blue Dragons to the victory.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2025-26/bios/thomas_daleron_yjqw">Daleron Thomas</a>&nbsp;led four Blue Dragons in double figures with 20 points. Shaw had 16 points as the Blue Dragons shot 57.1 percent overall. The Grizzlies hit 13 3-pointers in the game with eight different players hitting at least one 3-pointer. The Blue Dragons held Butler to 38.1 percent shooting.

Butler has won two games in a row and 4 of its last 5 games. Last Wednesday the Grizzlies outlasted Coffeyville 110-104 in El Dorado.

Jaise Combs and Tristan Hankins combined for eight of the Grizzlies 15 3-pointers against the Red Ravens. Hankins scored 21 points and Combs had 19.

The Grizzlies have surpassed the 100-point mark 12 times this season.

Monday's game will be the 204th between Hutchinson and Butler in a continuous series that dates back to 1929. The Blue Dragons lead the series 132-71.

The No. 18-ranked Blue Dragons (15-4, 10-3 KJCCC) plays host to the No. 8 Butler Grizzlies (18-1, 12-1 KJCCC) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The game was postponed until Monday after Saturday's winter storm.

The Blue Dragons look for their first win this season against a ranked opponent, going 0-3 in the first three games against ranked opponents.

The Dragons are on a three-game winning streak after a come-from-behind 68-61 victory last Wednesday at Garden City. The Blue Dragons trailed by as many as nine points and trailed after three quarters before a 23-point fourth quarter turned the game around.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2025-26/bios/wilson_jaden_nnxf">Jaden Wilson</a>&nbsp;had career bests of 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Blue Dragons, who defeated Garden City for the 17th-straight time.
