HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Holmes, Mississippi may have knocked off the defending NJCAA National Champion Vincennes on Monday. But the run ended Tuesday as they were no match for the number two seeded Northern Oklahoma in the second round of the tournament falling to the Mavericks 77-66.

The game was close in the first half, but the Mavericks were able to put some room between them and the Bulldogs in the second half, leading by as many as 17 late in the game.

The Mavericks were led by Tyrel Morgan with 26 points and JD Ray with 24. Tyler Talley and Darius Clark both scored 13 for Holmes. The Bulldogs end the season at 16-5.

Northern Oklahoma moves on to play Coffeyville Thursday at 2 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was pitted as one of the better matchups of the day but the last game of the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament Tuesday was anything but as Coffeyville put up a big number of Odessa running the Wranglers off the floor 95-56.

The Red Ravens were never in trouble as they jumped out to a 20 point halftime lead and never looked back. Coffeyville was led by Love Bettis with 22 points along with five other players in double figures. The Ravens shot 54% from the field and out rebounded Odessa 37-28.

The Wranglers were led by Tre Richardson who was the only player in double figures with 11 points.

Coffeyville moves on to play Northern Oklahoma at 2 p.m. Thursday. Odessa ends the season at 24-4.

Red Ravens move on with convincing win over Odessa

Cowley College and Trinity Valley had a track meet for a half, but the Tigers were too much for the Cardinals in the highest scoring contest in tournament history. The game was 77-70 at the break before Cowley really got separation en route to a 134-107 win.

Cowley had six players in double figures, led by Mikel Henderson's 33 points, Dalen Ridgnal had 24, Cevin Clark 21, Moun'tae Edmunson 17, Shemarri Allen 13 and Raishaun Brown 10 for the Tigers.

The Cardinals also had six in double digits, led by Trevon Fuller with 25, Tuongthach Gathek with 19, Deshawn Davis with 18, Darry More with 14, Jakevion Buckley with 12 and Sofara Rasas with 11.

Mineral Area defeated Hutchinson 80-77 in the first game of the tournament for the Cardinals. The game wasn't decided until Hutchinson's Josh Baker missed a three to tie in the final seconds and the Cardinals were able to run out the clock.

Mineral Area was led by Malevy Leons 21 points, Terrion Murdix added 16, Keonte Jones and Kevin Stone each had 11 for the Cardinals.

Stephan Gabriel paced the Blue Dragons with 27 in the losing effort, Josh Baker had 19 and Majok Kuath 13. Matt Mayers was held to just 9 points.

Mineral Area will face Cowley College Thursday at 2 p.m. Hutchinson ends its season at 19-7.

Blue Dragons lose to Mineral Area 80-77 Tuesday at NJCAA

Kan. — Shelton State won its first round matchup with Northeastern in the NJCAA Tournament 79-66 on the strength of its free throw shooting. 

The Buccaneers went 24 of 29 from the charity stripe, as compared to just 13 of 17 for the Plainsmen.

Shelton State looked like they had things well under control with a 17 point lead at the 17:12 mark of the game, but Northeastern scratched and clawed to as close as six in the game's final four minutes at 66-60 before the Buccaneers hit back-to-back buckets to stretch the lead to 10 and Northeastern only got as close as eight after that.

Shelton State had four players in double figures, led by 19 points from Willie Johnson, Justin Bufford had 17, Andres Burney had 14 and Thaddeus Williams added 12. Northeastern saw Dalton Knecht hit for 21 points, Jared Adams had 15 and Cyler Kane-Johnson had 13.

Shelton State advances to play Chipola Wednesday at 8 p.m. Northeastern ends its season at 15-5.

The Indian River State Pioneers defeated the Dawson Buccaneers in the opening round of the NJCAA Tournament 85-75 Tuesday morning at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Two Pioneers topped 20 points in the contest. Indian River was led by Linton Brown's 28 points and Abdoulaye Thiam added 20. Also in double figures was AJ Cajuste with 10. 

The Buccaneers were led by Jajuan Tot's 16 points, Cordell Stenson and Jalen Tot each had 12 points.

The game was tight through the first 25 minutes or so. It was a one-point game at the 15:30 mark of the second half, then the Pioneers went on a 7-0 run in a 1:20 span and Dawson never got closer than six points in the rest of the game.

Indian River will play Southern Idaho Wednesday at 6 p.m. Dawson ends its season at 23-3.

Fleming struck out three in 5 1/3 innings, getting big cheers from friends and family who journeyed over from his hometown of Bridgeton, Missouri.

Hutch High Baseball postponed by weather

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team plays the highest-ranked team it’s faced this season and it happened to be the 2021 NJCAA Tournament’s No. 1 seed in the second round.

The 16th-seeded Blue Dragons (19-6) will take on No. 1 seed and No. 2 NJCAA Rankings Mineral Area College at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the first game of the NJCAA Tournament’s second round.

The Blue Dragons reached an NJCAA Tournament milestone on Monday after a 95-86 win over Kilgore College. Hutchinson became just the fifth team to reach 50 tournament victories. The win was also Blue Dragon head coach Steve Eck’s 650th NJCAA victory, 382 of those coming with the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons will square off against the No. 1 defensive scoring team in the national in Mineral Area. The Cardinals allow just 60 points per game. MAC is sixth in the NJCAA in field-goal defense (37.6 percent) and eighth in 3-point defense (33.4 percent).

Mineral Area rolled by State Fair (88-52) and Moberly Area (66-56) in the regional tournament and defeated Triton 75-56 in the district championship game.

The Blue Dragons, in four postseason games, is averaging 92.8 points per game so far. Hutchinson is shooting 50.6 percent in the postseason and are plus 10.0 in rebounding margin.

Sophomore guard Josh Baker leads five Blue Dragons scoring in double figures in the postseason at 17.8 points per game.

Tuesday’s matchup will be only the second time that Hutchinson and Mineral Area will have played. The other meeting came on December 31, 1992, in the championship game of the Mesa Rotary Tournament. The Dragons lost that meeting 63-56.

Mineral Area is led by forward Malevy Leons, who is averaging 18.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Leons shoots 56.6 percent from the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;Keonte Jones is the Cardinals’ second-leading scorer at 12.0 points per game. Terrion Murdix is third at 9.8 points and Kevin Stone is fourth at 9.7 points per game.

The Blue Dragons are 3-2 in the second round of the NJCAA Tournament. Hutchinson looks for its 17th appearance in the NJCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — South Georgia State used a full court press to build a 14 point lead, then had to hold on in overtime to defeat Salt Lake 93-89 in the final game Monday at the NJCAA National Tournament.

The Hawks looked to be in control until a barrage of three pointers from Felix Lemetti helped get the Bruins back in the game. But poor execution down the stretch by Salt Lake and free throws late for the Hawks in the extra period sealed the win.

South Georgia was led by Jalen King and Daniel Perrish with 19 points each. Jay Allen-Tovar led the way for the Bruins with 20 points and Lemetti who added 18 on six 3 pointers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Coffeyville looked like a team that wants to spend the weekend in Hutchinson after a first round win Monday over Southwest Tennessee 89-62 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Red Ravens had four players in double figures. Tylor Perry led Coffeyville with 18 points, Love Bettis had 16, Hayden Brittingham had 12 including a couple of huge dunks and Kevaughn Ellis had 10.

Southwest Tennessee was paced by Jamey Sanders 23 points. Brandon Mason had 13 and Eric Johnson had 11 for the Saluqis.

Coffeyville goes on to play Odessa in the 8:30 p.m. game Tuesday in Hutchinson. Southwest Tennessee closes out their year at 11-5.

Coffeyville advances over SW Tennessee with 89-62 NJCAA win

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A dandy between 2019 NJCAA Division I champion Vincennes and Holmes went down to the wire before the 18 seeded Holmes Bulldogs were the beneficiary of a late Trailblazers turnover and Kaleb Higgins hit four clutch free throws down the stretch to give Holmes a 71-66 win at the Hutchinson Sports Arena Monday afternoon.

The four last minute makes were all the free throws Higgins shot all day. He scored nine points. The Bulldogs were paced by Brandon Witherspoon's 22 points. Ahmad Anthony added 12. 

Vincennes was led by Randy Tucker's 14 points, Brevin Jefferson had 11, Nigel Martin and DJ Brewton had 10 each.

He scored nine points. The Bulldogs were paced by Brandon Witherspoon's 22 points. Ahmad Anthony added 12. Vincennes was led by Randy Tucker's 14 points, Brevin Jefferson had 11, Nigel Martin and DJ Brewton had 10 each.Vincennes ends its season at 17-7. Trinity Valley advances over Brunswick 96-91 at NJCAA Tournament

Kan. —&nbsp;Six players scored in double figures as the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team became fifth team in NJCAA Tournament history to reach 50 all-time wins.

The No. 16-seeded Blue Dragons pulled away in the second half Monday to defeat 17th-seed Kilgore College 95-86 in an opening-round matchup to begin the 2021 tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons (19-6) will now play No. 2-ranked and NJCAA Tournament top-seed Mineral Area at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the second round. Kilgore closes its season at 17-6.

Hutchinson joined Moberly Area, Vincennes, College of Southern Idaho and San Jacinto in the NJCAA Tournament 50-win club. The Blue Dragons are now 50-25 all-time in the tournament, including 13-5 in the opening round.

The Blue Dragons led 39-38 at halftime and then tied a season-high second-half offensive output, outscoring the Rangers 56-48 in the final 20 minutes.

The key stat was rebounding for Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons were a plus-3 in rebounding margin and Kilgore had six offensive rebounds. The Dragons out-rebounded Kilgore 23-15 and the Rangers had just four offensive boards.

Sophomore Jaden Okon led the Blue Dragons with 16 points on 4 of 6 shooting and a career-high 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Okon scored all 16 points in the second half.

Sophomore Josh Baker was also 8 for 8 from the line to finish with 15 points. Baker tied Bryant Selebangue for team-high rebounding honors with seven.

Majok Kuath, Stephan Gabriel and Isaiah Bujdoso had 12 points each and Chris Robinson added 11.

The Blue Dragons shot 47.1 percent for the game (33 of 70), including 2 of 13 from 3-point range and 27 of 31 from the free-throw line.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hutchinson out-rebounded Kilgore 40-29 and had just 10 turnovers.

Kilgore became the first time this season to shoot 50 percent against the Blue Dragons, shooting 31 of 62 from the field).

The Rangers had a one-two scoring punch who combined for 63 points. KJ Jenkins hit 5 of 14 from 3-point range and finished with 34 points. Da’Sean Nelson had 29 points on 11 of 17 shooting. The rest of the Kilgore team scored 21 points.

Kilgore was 7 of 19 from 3-point range and 17 of 23 from the free-throw line.

The Rangers had an early six-point lead at 10-4 after Dantwan Grimes 3-pointer. The Dragons came back to tie the game at 12-all on a Selebangue layup with 12:44 to play in the half.

The Blue Dragons built their largest lead of the first half of six when Baker scored inside with 8:03 to play for a 25-19 Dragon lead. The Rangers tied the game at 35-all on a Nelson dunk with 1:52 to go. Two Gabriel free throws with 55 seconds left gave Hutch a three-point lead, but Kilgore’s Stephan Morris scored with 32 seconds left for a 39-38 Hutchinson halftime lead.

With Kilgore leading 49-48, the Blue Dragons went on a 7-0 run capped by two Okon free throws with 14:02 to play for a 55-49 Hutchinson lead. The Dragons took their first double-figure lead at 68-57 with 9:36 left on a Kuath layup.

Then leading 76-67, the Blue Dragons used a 9-4 run to lead 85-70 after a Chris Robinson layup with 4:10 to play.

GAME NOTES: This was head coach Steve Eck’s 650th win as a junior college head coach. … This was the Eck’s 468th Jayhawk Conference coaching victory. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Aaron Nola struck out 10 and threw a two-hitter for his first nine-inning shutout in the majors, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Bryce Harper homered and had three hits for the Phillies. Nola threw a pair of doubleheader-shortened complete games last season, including a shutout. But he never pitched into the ninth inning over his first 142 career starts. Nola allowed only two singles and retired 13 straight going into the eighth. He did not walk a batter.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs tight end and longtime Missouri politician Fred Arbanas has died. Arbanas was a key member of the Chiefs' first two Super Bowl teams in the 1960s' and '70s. The Jackson County Democratic Party, for which Arbanas was a major player for more than four decades, announced his death at the age of 82 in a brief statement. No cause was given. A member of the Chiefs' Hall of Fame, Arbanas was a six-time all-AFL selection and was picked to the All-Time AFL Team by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After his playing career, Arbanas served more than 40 years in the Jackson County Legislature.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Longtime Missouri women's soccer coach Bryan Blitz is retiring to spend more time with his family. Blitz has led the program for the entirety of its 25-year existence and went 254-216-39 with the Tigers. His tenure at Missouri is the fifth longest of any sports coach in school history. The Tigers finished 6-5-3 with a season-ending 1-0 victory over longtime rival Kansas on Saturday. Blitz coached at Butler before coming to Missouri. He was 299-260-47 in 30 seasons as a college head coach.

UNDATED (AP) — A buzzer-beating bucket by the Miami Heat has allowed the Philadelphia 76ers to expand their lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference without breaking a sweat.

Bam Adebayo (ad-eh-BY'-oh) drained a 13-footer as time expired to give the Heat a 109-107 victory over the Nets. Adebayo finished with 21 points and 15 boards for Miami, which trailed by six in the final minute before closing on a 10-2 run to end a three-game losing streak.

Landry Shamet had 30 points for Brooklyn, which lost Kevin Durant early in the game with a left thigh contusion.

The outcome drops the Nets 1 ½ games behind the East-leading 76ers, who were off on Sunday.

— Paul George led five starters in double figures with 23 points as the Clippers routed the Timberwolves, 124-105 for their eighth win in nine games. Kawhi (kah-WY') Leonard had 15 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in his return from a four-game absence because of a sore right foot. Fans attending a Clippers game at Staples Center for the first time in over a year saw their team hit a season-high 21 3-pointers.

— The Knicks picked up their sixth straight win as Julius Randle had 33 points and 10 assists in a 122-112 overtime decision over the Pelicans. Derrick Rose added 23 points and came up with big plays down the stretch. Rose had the assist on Reggie Bullock's 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left in regulation, blocked the Pelicans' last shot and then opened overtime with a steal and layup to give New York the lead for good.

— Clint Capela had 25 points and 24 rebounds as the surging Hawks beat the Pacers, 129-117. Trae Young scored 34 points and had 11 assists for Atlanta, which has won eight of 10 and is 17-6 under coach Nate McMillan. Bogdan Bogdanovic (BOY'-ahn bahg-DAH'-noh-vich) and Kevin Huerter (HUR'-tur) each chipped in 23 points and helped the Hawks take a 20-point lead in the first quarter. 

— De'Aaron Fox scored 30 points, Harrison Barnes added 24 and Terence Davis II 23 as the Kings whipped the Mavericks, 121-107 to snap a nine-game losing streak. Barnes scored 11 in the third quarter as the Kings built a 21-point lead midway through the period. NBA fines Spurs for violating resting rules in game they won

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has fined the San Antonio Spurs $25,000 for violating the league's player resting policy — in a game the Spurs won by 26 points. 

The Spurs sat DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills and Jakob Poeltl for rest Saturday night in Phoenix. It didn't matter, as six Spurs players scored in double figures in a 111-85 rout of the Suns. According to the league's resting policy, teams should not rest multiple healthy players for the same game. When they do rest healthy players, it is supposed to be in home games.

Bieber sets K record, fans 13 as Indians 6-3 beat Reds 6-3

UNDATED (AP) — Shane Bieber is now the first pitcher in major league history to start a season with double-digit strikeouts in his first four starts.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner fanned 13 while allowing three runs over eight innings of the Indians' 6-3 win over the Reds. Bieber has 48 strikeouts this year, matching Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan for the most through the first four starts of a season.

Roberto Pérez hit a three-run homer for Cleveland, which also got homers from Jordan Luplow (LOOP'-loh) and José Ramírez to avoid a three-game sweep.

— The last-place Yankees lost their fifth straight game as Yoshi Tsutsugo (YOH'-shee soo-SOO'-goh) hit a tiebreaking double off Gerrit Cole in the seventh inning to give the Rays a 4-2 victory and a three-game sweep in the Bronx. Four pitchers combined on the Rays' second three-hitter of a series in which New York managed 11 hits in all. 

— Tim Anderson homered on the game's first pitch and Dallas Keuchel (KY'-kul) pitched five solid innings as the White Sox beat the Red Sox, 3-2 in the opener of a twinbill. Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH'-nee grahn-DAHL') had an RBI double and Yoán Moncada (yoh-AHN' mohn-KAH'-dah) drove in a run with a single in Chicago's first win in four games. 

— In the nightcap, Yermín (yur-MEEN') Mercedes opened Chicago's three-run fourth inning with a long homer before the White Sox completed a 5-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep in Boston. Nick Madrigal had two hits and drove in two runs for the Pale Hose, who climbed back to .500 at 8-8.

— Ty France launched a two-run homer and six Mariners combined on a one-hitter in a 7-2 verdict over the Astros. France followed Mitch Haniger's two-run triple with a two-run home run to left field in the decisive four-run fifth.

— The Rangers ended a five-game home losing streak by downing the Orioles, 1-0 on Nate Lowe's RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th. Baltimore appeared to take the lead on a single by Trey Mancini in the top of the 10th, but designated runner Maikel (MY'-kehl) Franco was thrown out even though he started the play on third base.

— The Dodgers' eight-game winning streak is over after Eric Hosmer delivered the tying and go-ahead RBIs in the seventh and eighth innings, helping the Padres earn a 5-2 win over Los Angeles. Dodgers starter Trevor Bauer handed off a 2-1 lead after six innings in a tight duel with another Cy Young Award winner, Blake Snell.

— Freddie Freeman crushed one of Atlanta's four homers in the first inning against Kyle Hendricks, leading the Braves to a potentially costly 13-4 victory over the Cubs. Travis d'Arnaud, Ehire Adrianza (AY'-ray ah-dree-AHN'-zah) and Guillermo Heredia (gee-EHR'-moh heh-REH'-dee-uh) also connected during Atlanta's fast start, and Heredia added his first career grand slam in the sixth for his first multihomer game. But the Braves' offensive performance was overshadowed by the status of Ronald Acuña (ah-KOON'-yah) Jr. after he departed in the fourth due to pain in his lower abdominal muscles.

— Phillies ace Aaron Nola fired his first nine-inning shutout in the majors as he fanned ten while allowing two hits in a 2-0 shutout of the Cardinals. Bryce Harper homered and had three hits for Philadelphia, one day after being held out of the lineup due to tightness in his lower back.

— The Mets won for the fifth time in six games as Marcus Stroman pitched eight innings of one-run ball in their 2-1 victory at Colorado. Stroman also made a dazzling defensive play and catcher James McCann threw out Trevor Story attempting to steal second for the final out.

— Madison Bumgarner had his best outing of the season, allowing a run over five innings as the Diamondbacks beat the Nationals, 5-2. Bumgarner gave up just two hits and dropped his ERA from 11.20 to 8.68 through four starts. 

— Alex Wood pitched five innings in his season debut and four relievers completed a three-hitter as the Giants used an unearned run to beat the Marlins, 1-0 and avert a series sweep. Tyler Rogers pitched a perfect ninth for his first save to complete the Giants' third shutout in their past seven games. 

— Colin Moran smacked a three-run homer and supplied a tiebreaking double that gave the Pirates a 6-5, 10-inning win over the Brewers. The Pirates withstood a two-homer performance from Milwaukee's Daniel Vogelbach to win the deciding game of this series. 

Nats put Strasburg on IL with right shoulder inflammation

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Nationals placed right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day injured list Sunday because of right shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to April 15. 

The Nats also put right-hander Wander Suero (WAHN'-dur SWEHR'-oh) on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain and recalled righty Ryne Harper from the alternate training site in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Meanwhile, Nationals manager Dave Martinez says lefty Luis Avilán (A'-vih-lahn) has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and is "weighing his decision on what to do." He says the 31-year-old Avilán could have Tommy John surgery or "sit out and see if it heals."

— Monday night's game between Minnesota and the Oakland Athletics at the Coliseum has been postponed because of the Twins' continued COVID-19 problems. Two games this weekend between the Twins and the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim were postponed. MLB said the Twins and A's are tentatively scheduled for a straight doubleheader Tuesday as a makeup. 

— San Francisco Giants closer Jake McGee and right-hander Logan Webb have gone on the injured list because they're feeling lingering effects from the COVID-19 vaccine. The Giants are hoping both pitchers will be on the list for only a game or two. The Giants recalled catcher Chadwick Tromp from the alternate training site and activated left-hander Alex Wood from the 10-day IL to start Sunday's game at Miami. 

— Yankees outfielder Jay Bruce is retiring. The 34-year-old is a three-time All-Star outfielder. He went to spring training with the Yankees on a minor league contract and made the major league roster as a first baseman when Luke Voit injured a knee. Bruce is hitting .118 with one homer and three RBIs in 39 plate appearances, and he remained active for Sunday's game. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins remain perfect since acquiring former Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall at the trade deadline last week.

The Bruins own a four-game winning streak after Brad Marchand delivered two goals and a pair of assists in a 6-3 downing of the Capitals.

Bowman produced a stunning conclusion to a race that Hamlin had dominated along with Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano. With all eyes on Hamlin and Logano on the restart, Bowman ducked inside Hamlin, easily gained the spot and held it to the finish to become the eighth winner in nine Cup races this season.
