LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas forward Jalen Wilson was suspended for the No. 3 Jayhawks’ lone exhibition game and first three regular-season games Tuesday after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. 

The 6-foot-8 sophomore from Texas was arrested early Sunday in Lawrence and released on $250 bond. He will miss Wednesday night’s exhibition game against Emporia State, along with the regular-season opener against Michigan State in the Champions Classic. 

Wilson also will miss the Jayhawks' home opener against Tarleton State and a nonconference game against Stony Brook.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 21 Hutchinson (1-0) faced an early 10-9 deficit Tuesday night against Bethany's JV.

After being down one with more than six minutes gone, the Dragon women put on a 24-0 run over the course of the next nine minutes. Hutchinson closed the half on a 34-7 run.&nbsp;

The Swedes scored just two points in the third quarter as the Dragons opened up a 65-19 advantage.

Hutchinson finished the night with a 95-24 victory.&nbsp;

Four Dragons scored in double-digits, led by Mya Williams, who had 17.

Tor'e Alford led the Dragons with 13 at the break, but finished with 16 after posting just six second-half minutes.&nbsp;

Ziya Simms scored 11 and Mele Kailahi added 10 for the Dragons. Two other players, Natalie Payne and Kali Howard, each added nine.&nbsp;

Hutchinson came away with 24 assists on 33 made baskets.&nbsp;

Mary Parks led the Swedes with six points.&nbsp;

Bethany shot just 17.9%. Hutchinson shot 49.3% on the night.&nbsp;

The Dragons will play again Friday and Saturday in the Sports Arena for the BSN Sports Tipoff Classic. Both games will start at 5:30 p.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa panel responsible for resolving lawsuits against the state has agreed to pay nearly $400,000 in attorney and expert witness fees as part of a settlement in a lawsuit in which University of Iowa officials reversed a decision to eliminate the women's swimming program. Men's swimming, gymnastics and tennis also were eliminated. The State Appeal Board voted Monday to pay $399,989 to five attorneys and three expert witnesses. Iowa Solicitor General Jeff Thompson says the payment was part of a court-approved settlement. Members of the women's swimming and diving team sued last year, alleging the decision to eliminate the program violated a federal law that bars sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs.&nbsp;

Winston done for year...Surgery for Henry...Rams get Miller

UNDATED (AP) — News from the NFL on Monday includes two major injuries and a trade involving an eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker.

Saints quarterback Jameis (JAY'-mihs) Winston is done for the season after suffering a major left knee injury during the second quarter of Sunday's win over the Buccaneers. An MRI shows a torn ACL and damage to the MCL in Winston's left knee.

New Orleans coach Sean Payton says he's content to stick with the three remaining healthy QBs on his roster.

Derrick Henry's situation is only a little better. The NFL rushing leader will undergo surgery on his right foot on Tuesday, a damaging blow to the Titans' offense. Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel (VRAY'-bul) says the team isn't putting a timetable on Henry's return. 

The Titans placed Henry on injured reserve Monday afternoon.

The big deal of the day has Von Miller going from the Broncos to the Rams. Two people familiar with the deal say Denver will get second- and third-round picks in the 2022 draft for the perennial Pro Bowler. The Broncos also are picking up $9 million of the $9.7 million left on his contract.

— Packers coach Matt LaFleur has declined to say if 2020 All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari will make his 2021 debut on Sunday at Kansas City. LaFleur says he's made up his mind but wants to stay mum to force the Chiefs to prepare for either scenario. Bakhtiari hasn't played since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Dec. 31. 

— Ravens starting linebacker Malik Harrison is recovering after being struck in the leg by a stray bullet while police said he was outside a Cleveland nightclub. The Ravens released a statement saying Harrison suffered a non-life-threatening injury when he was shot in the left calf while attending a gathering Sunday night. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers played Monday without Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') and Tobias Harris before losing fellow starter Danny Green to a tight hamstring. The Sixers won anyway as Seth Curry stepped up in Embiid's absence by scoring 23 points in a 113-103 verdict over the Trail Blazers. Georges Niang added 21 points for the 76ers, who went 3-0 over the last four days. Niang's three-point play broke an 86-all tie early in the fourth and started a 14-4 run.

Embiid was given the night off and Harris was a late scratch due to health and safety protocols.

Norman Powell led the Trail Blazers with 22 points. 

— OG Anunoby (an-oo-NOH'-bee) scored a career-high 36 points and the Raptors won their fourth straight by beating the Knicks 113-104. Gary Trent Jr. added 26 points for the Raptors, who surged into the lead by outscoring the Knicks 38-22 in the third quarter. The game was played on the 75th anniversary of the first NBA, which the Knicks won in Toronto.

— The Hawks ended a two-game losing streak by hitting all 29 of their free throws in a 118-111 victory against the Wizards. Trae Young was 11-for-11 from the line while scoring 23 points. Clint Capela had 16 points and 12 rebounds as Atlanta avenged last week's loss to Washington.

— DeMar DeRozan poured in 37 points and the Bulls rallied from a 19-point, second-half deficit to beat the Celtics 128-114. Zach LaVine (lah-VEEN') scored 26 points and helped Chicago outscore Boston, 39-11 in the fourth quarter. Nikola Vucevic (nih-KOH'-lah VOO'-seh-vihch) had 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the 6-1 Bulls.

— Ja (jah) Morant's 26 points, eight assists and seven rebounds carried the Frizzlies to a 106-97 win over the Nuggets. Tyus Jones chipped in 17 points as Memphis beat Denver for the first time in their last four meetings. Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) led the Nuggets with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. 

— The Clippers closed on a 16-3 spurt to turn a nine-point deficit into a 99-94 win over the Thunder. Paul George scored 32 points and Reggie Jackson added 15 to help Los Angeles win for just the second time in six games. Luke Kennard, who scored all 14 of his points in the second half, had five points during the decisive spurt. 

— Cole Anthony scored a season-high 31 points and Wendell Carter Jr. chipped in a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Magic came from behind to beat the Timberwolves, 115-97. Rookie Franz Wagner had 28 points for Orlando, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota, which led by 11 late in the third quarter.

— Domantas Sabonis (doh-MAHN'-tahs sah-BOH'-nihs) had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the Pacers' 131-118 win against the Spurs. Myles Turner added 19 points to help Indiana end a four-game skid and win for just the second time in eight games this season. Dejounte (deh-ZHAHN'-tay) Murray finished with 16 points and Derrick White had 13 to lead San Antonio. 

— The Cavaliers pulled out a 113-110 win over the Hornets as Jarrett Allen contributed 24 points and 16 rebounds. Lauri Markkanen scored 21 points and Evan Mobley added 15 with 10 rebounds for Cleveland, which went 3-2 on its road trip. LaMelo Ball finished with 30 points and Terry Rozier added 23 for Charlotte.

UNDATED (AP) — Cavaliers forward Kevin Love has been placed in the NBA's health and safety protocols.

The Cavaliers provided a brief statement on Love as they got ready to play the finale of a five-game road trip, saying only that "further updates will be provided at the appropriate time." The 33-year-old Love is averaging 9.9 points and 7.3 rebounds for Cleveland this season in a reserve role. 

NEW YORK (AP) — Acting general manager Zack Scott will not return to the New York Mets. That's according to a person familiar with the firing.

Scott was placed on administrative leave following an arrest on drunken driving charges in August. The dismissal is hardly a surprise after New York fell apart in the second half and missed the playoffs for a fifth straight season. President Sandy Alderson assumed GM duties with Scott on paid leave and already oversaw the firing of manager Luis Rojas. 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — The NCAA has suspended Illinois center Kofi (KOH'-fee) Cockburn for the first three games of the season.

The punishment comes after he sold apparel and memorabilia before new regulations that allow athletes to participate in money-making ventures went into effect.

The Associated Press preseason All-American is set to play his first game Nov. 22 against Cincinnati in Kansas City, Missouri, according to the school's announcement Monday.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning have handed the Washington Capitals their first regulation loss of the season.

The Caps were 5-0-3 until Andrei Vasilevskiy (va-sih-LEHV'-skee) stopped 31 shots in the Lightning's 3-2 victory against Washington. Anthony Cirelli had a goal and two assists for the Bolts, who also stopped Alex Ovechkin's eight-game point streak. 

Tampa Bay also got goals from Alex Killorn (kih-LOHRN') and Brayden Point. 

— The Blackhawks finally have their first victory in 10 games this season after Patrick Kane recorded a hat trick and collected four points in a 5-1 thumping of the Senators. Kane was in the lineup on Monday after being removed from the league's COVID-19 protocol earlier in the day. Brandon Hagel scored twice and Jonathan Toews (tahvz) had three assists for the Hawks, who opened the season 0-7-2 before leaving Arizona as the league's only winless team.

— The Oilers are 7-1 after Leon Draisaitl (DRY'-sy-tul) delivered two goals and two assists in a 5-2 win versus the Kraken. Duncan Keith, Kyle Turris and Kailer Yamamoto also scored to support Mikko Koskinen's (MEE'-koh KAHS'-kih-nehnz) 27-save performance. Jaden Schwartz and Carson Soucy tallied for the Kraken, who are 2-6-1 after their second loss in a row.

Bettman defends handling of Hawks assault allegations

UNDATED (AP) — Commissioner Gary Bettman has defended the NHL's decisions and discipline meted out following an investigation into the Chicago Blackhawks' handling of sexual assault allegations in 2010.

Bettman called the organization's $2 million fine significant. He stood by decisions to let Joel Quenneville (KWEHN'-vihl) coach one more game for Florida and not discipline Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff (sheh-vul-DAY'-ahf) based on his limited role in Chicago's front office at the time. 

Quenneville was head coach of the Blackhawks in 2010. He resigned as Florida's coach after meeting with Bettman last week.

— Penguins defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Chad Ruhwedel (ROO'-wee-dul) have entered the COVID-19 protocol after testing positive for the coronavirus. Coach Mike Sullivan confirmed the positive tests, saying Pettersson is symptomatic while Ruhwedel is so far asymptomatic. Pettersson and Ruhwedel are the fifth and sixth members of the Penguins to enter the protocol so far this season.

— The Sharks removed one of their seven players from the NHL's COVID-19 protocol but added another as they returned to practice on Monday. Forward Andrew Cogliano was taken off the list after missing Saturday's game against Winnipeg. Forward Kevin LaBanc went on it. 

— The league has suspended Canadiens forward Cedric Paquette for two games without pay for boarding Ducks forward Trevor Zegras during Anaheim's 4-2 win on Sunday. Paquette was given a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The two-time defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs are wallowing at 3-4 and already facing an uphill climb just to reach the playoffs as the New York Giants visit Arrowhead Stadium. And a big reason for their losing record has been a dismal defense that has been particularly bad when it comes to pressuring the quarterback — the job that Frank Clark was brought in to do. Yet two gun-related arrests combined with two different hamstring injuries have prevented one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL from making much of an impact this season.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Emanuel Reynoso's penalty kick in the 37th minute was the difference as Minnesota strengthened its playoff potential with a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. It was the first successful penalty kick of the season for Minnesota. Entering the match in eighth place, the Loons conceded a goal in the eighth minute when Johnny Russell's header from the back post found the foot of Khiry Shelton for the close range score. Minnesota got that back from Franco Fragapane in the 20th minute as he volleyed a loose ball at the 18 into the net.

ATLANTA (AP) — The World Series is going back to Houston.

The Astros have forced a Game 6 by turning an early 4-0 deficit into a 9-5 win over the Braves. 

Pinch-hitter Marwin Gonzalez gave the Astros their first lead with a two-run, bases-loaded single with two out in the fifth. Martin Maldonado (mahr-TEEN' mal-doh-NAH'-doh) drove in three runs, while Yuli Gurriel (YOO'-lee gur-ee-EHL') and Carlos Correa each had three of Houston's 12 hits. Correa also collected two RBIs.

Houston began to chip away after Adam Duvall launched a grand slam in the bottom of the first. The Braves' other run came on Freddie Freeman's third-inning blast.

The Astros' bullpen threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings, with Jose Urquidy (ur-KEE'-dee) working a scoreless fourth to get the win. Losing pitcher A.J. Minter was reached for three runs over one frame.

UNDATED (AP) — Tom Brady threw for four more touchdowns on Sunday, but his latest interception led to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' second loss of the season.

P.J. Williams picked off Brady and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown with 1:24 left to secure the New Orleans Saints' 36-27 victory over the Bucs. Brady turned the ball over three times on a pair of interceptions and a fumble, which the Saints converted into 16 points.

The win could be costly to the Saints, who lost quarterback Jameis (JAY'-mihs) Winston to a knee injury early in the second quarter. Backup Trevor Siemian took over for Winston and completed 16 of 29 throws for 159 yards and a touchdown without a turnover. Siemian led the Saints on five scoring drives that produced two touchdowns and three field goals.

Saints coach Sean Payton called Winston's injury "significant."

— Backup Cooper Rush threw for 325 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns as the Cowboys defeated the Vikings, 20-16. Rush's final scoring pass was a five-yarder to Amari Cooper with 51 seconds remaining. Rush was pressed into service when Dak Prescott was shelved just before game time with a strained right calf muscle. 

— Josh Allen threw touchdown passes on consecutive second-half drives in leading the Bills to a 26-11 win over the Dolphins. Allen scored on a 7-yard run with 1:07 left and finished 29 of 42 for 249 yards passing for the 5-2 Bills. Tua Tagovailoa (TOO'-ah tuhng-ah-VY'-loh-ah) finished 21 of 39 for 205 yards and an interception in Miami's seventh consecutive loss.

— Matthew Stafford threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns before taking a seat for the fourth quarter of the Rams' 38-22 thrashing of the Texans. Cooper Kupp caught seven balls for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Darrell Henderson had 90 yards rushing and two TDs. The 7-1 Rams earned their fourth straight win and handed Houston its seventh loss in a row since a season-opening win.

— Fresh off a convincing win in Baltimore, the Bengals wasted a 31-20 lead in a 34-31 loss to the lowly Jets. Mike White threw for 405 yards and three touchdowns in his first NFL start and he caught a 2-point conversion pass on the go-ahead score. White overcame two early interceptions to complete 37 passes, the most by a player in his first start.

— Randy Bullock made a 44-yard field goal in overtime to cap a wild finish in the Titans' 34-31 win at Indianapolis. The teams combined for two touchdowns in the final 86 seconds of regulation, setting up overtime before Carson Wentz threw a costly interception. Ryan Tannehill was 23 of 33 for 265 yards and three touchdowns as the 6-2 Titans overcame a quiet day from NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry, who was held to 68 yards on 28 carries.

— The Steelers pulled out a 15-10 win at Cleveland despite playing the entire second half without kicker Chris Boswell because of a concussion suffered on a fake field goal. Pat Freiermuth made a nifty catch in the corner of the end zone to put the Steelers up 15-10 with 11:04 left. Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lihs-bur-gur) had 193 of his 266 passing yards in the second half and improved to 24-3-1 in starts against the rival Browns, including 12-2-1 in Cleveland. 

— Carolina improved to 4-4 and ended a four-game skid by defeating the Falcons, 19-13 on Chuba (CHOO'-bah) Hubbard's 6-yard scoring run with 6 1/2 minutes remaining. Zane Gonzalez hit field goals of 29, 51, 57 and 23 yards to prop up a Panthers offense that managed just 129 passing yards. The Panthers allowed just 213 total yards, with Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan throwing for 146 yards and two interceptions while being sacked three times.

— Adrian Phillips intercepted two passes, returning one for the go-ahead touchdown in the Patriots' 27-24 victory over the Chargers. Nick Folk kicked four field goals, including a tiebreaking, 30-yard boot with 2:21 left. Mac Jones completed 18 of 35 passes for 217 yards in helping the 4-4 Patriots drop Los Angeles to 4-3.

— Geno Smith ran for one score and threw a pair of touchdown passes to DK Metcalf, sending the Seahawks to a 31-7 rout of the Jaguars. Smith finished 20 of 24 for 195 yards, and his 83.3% completion percentage was a career best with at least 20 pass attempts. Lockett finished with 12 catches for 142 yards for the 3-5 Seahawks.

— The Broncos ended a four-game skid by blocking two field goals on their way to a 17-10 win against Washington. Melvin Gordon III caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score from 7 yards out with 4:31 remaining. He also fumbled with 21 seconds to go, giving Washington the ball at the Denver 24-yard line before Denver's defense held.

— Jimmy Garoppolo (gah-RAH'-poh-loh) threw for 322 yards and ran for two touchdowns as the 49ers knocked off the Bears, 33-22 to end a four-game losing streak. Deebo Samuel had six catches for 171 yards, and Elijah Mitchell carried 18 times for 137 yards and a touchdown for the 3-4 Niners. Justin Fields ran for 103 yards and a score, becoming the first Bears QB to rush for 100 yards in a game since Bobby Douglass in 1973.

— Boston Scott and Jordan Howard each had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Eagles in a 44-6 laugher at Detroit. Jalen Hurts had just 14 pass attempts but ran seven times for 71 of his team's 236 yards rushing as the 3-5 Eagles ended a two-game skid. Jared Goff was sacked a season-high five times and finished 23 of 34 for 222 yards as the 0-8 Lions remained the league's only winless team.

UNDATED (AP) — The defending NBA championship have suffered their third straight loss.

Donovan Mitchell scored 28 points and the Utah Jazz bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat the Milwaukee Bucks, 107-95. Mike Conley added 20 points, Jordan Clarkson had 15 and Bojan Bogdanovic (BOY'-ahn bahg-DAH'-noh-vihch) added 14.

Utah made its first five 3-point attempts and never trailed all night. When the Bucks got within five midway through the third quarter, Mitchell scored Utah's first seven points in a 12-2 run.

— Luka Doncic (DAHN'-chihch) made a 36-foot 3-pointer to beat the shot clock and blunt a late Sacramento in the Mavericks' 105-99 victory over the Kings. Doncic finished with 23 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds against the Kings, who were just 7-for-36 from 3-point range.

UNDATED (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are two away matching the NHL record for longest season-opening winning streak.

The Hurricanes are 8-0 after Brett Pesce (PEH'-shee) scored on a power play 2:27 into overtime to give them a 2-1 victory over the Coyotes. Frederik Andersen stopped 22 shots for his seventh win, blanking Arizona after Christian Fischer opened the scoring in the first period.

Martin Necas (NAY'-chas) also tallied to help Carolina extend the longest season-opening winning streak in franchise history.

The Coyotes remain one of the league's two winless teams after falling to 0-8-1.

— The Rangers were 3-1 winners over the Kraken as Adam Fox scored the go-ahead goal and Igor Shesterkin (shehs-TUR'-kihn) stopped 31 shots. Chris Kreider and Barclay Goodrow also scored for the Rangers, who set an October team record with five road victories.

— Ryan Getzlaf (GEHTS'-laf) became the Ducks' all-time points leader by assisting on Troy Terry's third-period goal in a 4-2 victory over the Canadiens. The 36-year-old Getzlaf has 989 points in 1,111 games for Anaheim, breaking the scoring mark held by Teemu Selanne (TAY'-moo seh-LAH'-nee).

— Jakub Voracek scored the lone goal in a shootout to give the Blue Jackets their first road win of the season, 4-3 at New Jersey. Joonas Korpisalo (YOH'-nuhs kohr-pih-SAH'-loh) had 39 saves for Columbus. 

— The Kings beat the Sabres, 3-2 on Alex Iafallo's goal with 6:19 remaining. Anze Kopitar (AHN'-zhee KOH'-pih-tahr) had a goal and an assist to help Los Angeles win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Michigan State moves up to 5th; Wake in top 10 for 1st time

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State has moved up to No. 5 in The Associated Press college football poll and Wake Forest is a top-10 team for the first time in school history. 

Georgia is a unanimous No. 1 for the fourth straight week. The rest of the top four is unchanged from last week, with Cincinnati at No. 2, Oklahoma at No. 3 and Alabama at No. 4. 

The Spartans jumped three spots by beating Michigan. The last time Michigan State broke into the top five was 2015. 

In the final AP poll before the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, Ohio State slipped to No. 6 and Oregon is seventh. No. 8 Notre Dame, Michigan and Wake Forest round out the top 10.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — The desperation of NASCAR's playoffs erupted when non-contender Alex Bowman spun Denny Hamlin to set up an overtime victory in a wild finish for the final spot in the championship finale. 

Hamlin led 103 laps at Martinsville Speedway and was out front with six to go when Bowman wiggled and bumped Hamlin out of his way. Bowman later held off Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski to win. 

The victory by Bowman prevented one of the other playoff drivers from winning the race and locking up a slot in the winner-take-all championship at sold-out Phoenix Raceway next Sunday. A victory by Busch or Keselowski would have pushed either into the finale. 

Kyle Larson, reigning champion Chase Elliott, Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. will race for the title.

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — Lucas Herbert shot a 2-under 69 to win the PGA's Bermuda Championship. 

Herbert closed with four pars to hold off Danny Lee and Patrick Reed, who finished with four birdies over his last six holes for a 65. Herbert's first PGA Tour victory, and third worldwide, sends him to the Masters for the first time.

Third-round leader Taylor Pendrith closed with a 76 to finish fifth.

Jerry Remy, Boston Red Sox player and broadcaster, dies

BOSTON (AP) — Former Boston Red Sox second baseman and television broadcaster Jerry Remy has died of cancer at 68. 

Remy had a long and public struggle with lung cancer, and drew thunderous applause at Fenway Park earlier this month when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a playoff game while using an oxygen tube.

Remy ended his 10-year playing career in 1985, three years before becoming a fixture in the Red Sox's broadcast booth. He was a beloved figure in Boston sports, known as "RemDawg" by generations of New Englanders.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Emanuel Reynoso’s penalty kick in the 37th minute was the difference as Minnesota strengthened its playoff potential with a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. 

It was the first successful penalty kick of the season for Minnesota. Entering the match in eighth place, the Loons conceded a goal in the eighth minute when Johnny Russell’s header from the back post found the foot of Khiry Shelton for the close range score. 

Minnesota got that back from Franco Fragapane in the 20th minute as he volleyed a loose ball at the 18 into the net.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu has apologized for a tweet calling his team’s supporters “one of the most toxic fan bases in all of sports” amid a 3-4 start for the two-time defending AFC champions. 

The All-Pro safety was replying to a tweet from teammate Anthony Hitchens on Friday. The linebacker had pointed out that Kansas City has been to three AFC title games, two Super Bowls and delivered the club’s first championship in 50 years in his time with the club. 

Mathieu says his tweet was “a mistake.” and that he “shouldn’t have used those words.”

Max Duggan was just 9 of 13 for 73 yards for the Horned Frogs before he was benched for Chandler Morris in the third quarter. Morris wound up finishing the game for them.

OSU wins over Kansas Saturday

COLBY – Louise Cocking added a huge accomplishment to an already impressive Blue Dragon resume on Saturday by winning the Region VI Women’s Cross Country individual championship.

The sophomore from Derbyshire, UK, led the Blue Dragons to a third-place team performance, winning the first collegiate race of her career by 9.95 seconds with a time of 19:09.33 at Lakeside Golf Course in Colby.

The Blue Dragons scored 99 team points, finishing behind only team champion Cloud County (48 points) and Dodge City (59 points). The Blue Dragons also finished third in the Jayhawk West conference standings behind the Thunderbirds and Conquistadors.

Cocking became the first Blue Dragon women’s cross country runner since 2001 to win a Region VI individual championship. She is the first Blue Dragon to win a Division I regional title. When Ruth Limo won the 2001 Region VI championship, she was the Division II regional champion.

Cocking’s time is the third-fastest time in a Region VI championship by a Blue Dragon runner. Limo ran 18:50 in 2001 and Gabby Collins ran 19:06 in 2018. Cocking ran 19 seconds faster than she did at the Region VI preview in late September

Saturday’s victory was the Blue Dragon first-team All-American’s fifth Top 5 finish this season and 10th Top 5 finish of her career.

Four other Blue Dragon runners ran faster times on Saturday than they did at the Region VI preview in September.

Sophomore Noelle Hidalgo ran 1:52 better at Lakeside finishing 20th in a time of 20:55.53.

Freshman Anastasia Meyer was the third Blue Dragon to finish, placing 26th in a time of 21:26.15.

Freshman Michele Gage placed 37th overall with a time of 23:34.16.

Sophomore Izzy Wheeler was the fifth Blue Dragon to finish, crossing the line in 40th with a time of 22:42.87, 19 seconds better than in September.

Sydney Grauer placed 48th in a time of 23:22.74. Jurney Yung was 50th in 23:39.25. Aidyn White was 51st in 23:40.53.

The Blue Dragons will next compete in the NJCAA Division I championships on November 13 in Richmond, VA

Cocking wins Region VI Championship

COLBY – Freshman Collin Oswalt had a Top 20 finish to lead Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team at the Region VI Cross Country Championships at Lakeside Golf Course on Saturday in Colby.

Oswalt played 16th overall with a time of 25:54.41. His time was the 13th best among Jayhawk West runners.

Hutchinson had only four runners competing on Saturday and wasn’t able to post a team score. Colby was the Region VI and Jayhawk West team champion. Northwest Tech’s Vincent Nchogu was the men’s individual champion.

Sophomore Andrew Holt was the second Blue Dragon to finish. Holt was 27th overall and 20th in the Jayhawk West with a time of 27:08.37.

Freshman Camilo Turin ran a time of 27:32.74 to finish 31st in the region and 23rd in the Jayhawk West. Turin ran 26 second faster than he did on the Lakeside course at the Region VI preview in early October.

Sophomore Aaron Geissinger had his fourth-straight PR of the season with a time of 27:59.81. That time was six second faster than his first race on the Lakeside course. Geissinger played 41st in the region and 28th in the conference.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team will open its 17th postseason on Monday when the Blue Dragons travel to Coffeyville for the opening round of the Midwest District Tournament (Region VI).

The fifth overall seed in the eight-team field, the Blue Dragons (8-5-1) will play fourth-seeded Coffeyville (10-7) at 3 p.m. on Monday at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville. The winner will meet the Cowley/Kansas City winner on Thursday, November 4 at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita.

The other three tournament quarterfinal games will be played on Sunday.

The Blue Dragons traveled to Coffeyville and defeated the Red Ravens 2-1 on September 18.

Monday’s meeting will be the fifth postseason meeting between Hutchinson and Coffeyville. Hutchinson is 3-1 vs. Coffeyville, including a 3-1 victory last season. The visiting team has won all four previous postseason meetings.

Hutchinson has a 23-16 all-time postseason record, including 13-3 in the opening round of the postseason.
