WICHITA, Kan.—The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Wichita Lobos in both games of the season opening doubleheader on Tuesday night from Wichita's West Urban Field, winning game one 5-2 and taking the nightcap 7-2 to get the 2022 season off in a positive note.
In the first inning, Hutchinson Monarchs got their offense started quickly as the Monarchs scored a run when Jenner Steele singled. Corbin Hawkins led things off on the hill for Hutchinson Monarchs. The right hander lasted three innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out four and walking none. Clay Wesbrooks came on in relief and pitched 3 inning with Carson Cornelius coming on in the 7th to wrap the game up. Hutchinson tallied nine hits in the game. Jimmy Blumberg, Steele, and Alex Birge each collected multiple hits for Hutchinson Monarchs with Birge, Steele, and Blumberg each managed two hits to lead Hutchinson Monarchs.. Wichita Lobos scattered seven hits in the game. Angel Cano and Jack Roubiks each racked up multiple hits for Wichita Lobos.
More of the same in game two for Hutchinson as the got a solid start by Sam Houston State's Dakota Palmer to defeat the Lobos, 7-2. Palmer surrendered three hits over four innings, striking out three and walking none holding the Lobos scoreless.
Wichita's starting pitcher Brad Wellington surrendered seven runs on six hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out one.
The Monarchs collected eight hits on the night. Austin Schneider and Lane Brewster each collected multiple hits for Hutchinson Monarchs. Schneider went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Hutchinson Monarchs in hits.
