The Jayhawks lead the all-time series 36-17 with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Kansas is on a five-match win streak with the last win being on September 25, 2021 with a score of 3-2. Freshman Caroline Bien led Kansas with career-highs of 16 kills and five services aces to go along with 12 digs and super-senior Jenny Mosser posted 12 kills, five aces and a team-high 17 digs for the match. 🏐 KU Battles Texas Tech on Saturday

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 38th annual Late Night in the Phog opened the Kansas men’s and women’s basketball season with a bang in front of a packed Allen Fieldhouse. The night featured a performance from DJ Diesel, various competitions, and a booming crowd.

The night began with a performance by the Kansas cheerleading squad. The team showed their skills and impressive tricks to bring the crowd to their feet. Shortly following the performance, the Kansas dance team joined them on the court for the Alma Mater and Rock Chalk Chant.

To really get the crowd involved and excited, the historical countdown video commenced. After an impact moment by Mitch Lightfoot and Chris Teahan, the hosts, Chris Miles and Katerina Kountouris, entered center stage with Big Jay and Baby Jay to continue the excitement.

Brothers Chris Teahan and Conner Teahan were brought to center court for the Teahan vs. Teahan challenge. The Teahan brothers battled to see who the better Teahan was in a three-point shootout. Connor Teahan was crowed champion of the brother battle.

It didn’t take long before the women’s basketball team was introduced to an electric Allen Fieldhouse. The crowd roared at the conclusion of the women’s basketball player introduction video and while each individual athlete was introduced to the Jayhawk fans.

Head coach Brandon Schneider addressed the crowd wearing a Lonnie Phelps Jr. jersey to show his appreciation for the football team and the excitement for the basketball season ahead.

“How about this incredible group of women on the court,” stated Schneider. “They are fighters. They are kind and they are going to do big things this season. They will be in the top 20. They will contend for a Big 12 title. Come this March, they will be prepared to make noise in the NCAA Tournament.”

The women’s team then transitioned to a scrimmage. They began their warmup before taking center court. Senior Taiyanna Jackson kicked off the scrimmage with a shot in the paint to get team white on the board. Junior Nadira Eltayeb followed up with a shot of her own. Team white took the lead 4-2 and never looked back. A turnover by Eltayeb and junior Chandler Prater allowed Team White to continue the stretch 8-4. A three-point jumper by junior Mia Vuksic was the first three-pointer made in the scrimmage. Senior Holly Kersgieter on team white forced a turnover and broke away from the pack for a layup. The 10 minutes ran out with the white team winning 19-10.

After the women’s scrimmage, men’s basketball head coach Bill Self spoke to the crowd about the high expectations he has for the Jayhawks this season. Soon the lights were dimmed, and the Jayhawk men’s team was welcomed on the floor.

“This night is to celebrate something fresh and new,” said Self. “At the same time, we’re the only school in America that gets to celebrate a national championship. Lawrence, Kansas has become the place to be. I am so excited about our five newcomers. They are all going to be really good players. It is so special that the last time we’ve celebrated like this is when some guy named Chambers made a shot from the three-point line. Before we turn the page on what was an extraordinary run, we turn all of our attention to what is going to happen in 2022-23.”

The KU band played while the men’s basketball team warmed up for their scrimmage to amp up Allen Fieldhouse.

The 15-minute clock began, and the Jayhawks took off. Team Blue won the tip off and scored a three-pointer from senior Michael Jankovich within the first 20 seconds. Team white tied up the scrimmage at five before a missed three-point jump shot gave team white an opportunity to score. KJ Adams Jr. was able to take the lead 7-5. With the game tied at seven, a turnover by sophomore Bobby Pettiford Jr. allowed number three, Dajuan Harris Jr. to score for team white. Soon enough team white was in the lead 11-7. Freshman Zuby Ejiofor on team blue dunked the ball to tie up the game at 11. With the clock winding down, team blue was in the lead 20-15 with six minutes left. Multiple turnovers by team white allowed team blue to maintain the lead. Freshman Ernest Udeh Jr. dunked the ball for team white to put them within three, 22-19.

At the final buzzer, Jalen Wilson shot a last minute three-pointer to take the scrimmage, 32-31.

The team teased the crowd before the $10,000 shot where two lucky crowd members can either shoot a half-court shot or pick someone from the men’s basketball staff or former KU player to take the shot for them.

The first fan was Emma Ryan, a sophomore from Prairie Village, Kansas. She chose Mario Chalmers to take the shot. On his first attempt, he unfortunately missed, however Bill Self was gracious enough to give her a second attempt. On his second shot, Chalmers drained it and won Ryan $10,000.

The second and final contestant was Yalone Woodruff, a junior from Henderson, Kentucky. He decided to take the shot himself. Woodruff had a few warmup shots before the $10,000 shot. Woodruff made the shot on his first attempt to win $10,000.

The first banner unveiling was a sight to be seen. A championship video played while Allen Fieldhouse anxiously waited for the curtain to fall, revealing the Big 12 Championship banner and Final Four banner. The fans roared as both curtains were removed.

Right after the banners were shown, the championship rings were handed out to the 2021-22 team.

It was the moment everyone had been waiting for, the unveiling of the 2022 national championship banner. Emotional videos played as all eyes were on banner. Slowly the curtain dropped, and Allen Fieldhouse erupted into cheers.

The history of Kansas basketball played on the videoboards to show fans what Kansas was all about.

To wrap up the night, Shaquille O’Neal, aka DJ Diesel, performed for the electric crowd in the Fieldhouse. Students and spectators chanted and danced to the upbeat music booming through the building.

Snell, Grisham lead Padres over Dodgers 2-1 for NLDS lead

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Blake Snell pitched five-hit ball into the sixth inning and Trent Grisham homered at a festive Petco Park, helping the San Diego Padres top the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 for a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series. San Diego can clinch its first trip to the NL Championship Series since 1998 with one more win on Saturday night. Joe Musgrove pitches for his hometown Padres, and Tyler Anderson starts for the NL West champions. With Snell working 5 1/3 innings and Josh Hader finishing a scoreless performance by San Diego's bullpen, the 111-win Dodgers were pushed to the brink of a massive disappointment. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer and Bryce Harper also went deep, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-1 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of their NL Division Series. The Phillies lead 2-1 in the best-of-five matchup and can advance to the NL Championship Series with a Game 4 win at home Saturday. The Phillies scored six runs in the third inning to turn the game into a rout. Hoskins was in a 1-for-19 postseason slump when he homered off Braves rookie Spencer Strider. Aaron Nola allowed one unearned run to pick up the win.

Guardians rally past Yankees 4-2 in 10 innings, tie ALDS 1-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar Gonzalez singled in the go-ahead run with Cleveland's second straight bloop hit in the 10th inning, and the Guardians overcame a two-run deficit to beat the New York Yankees 4-2 and even their best-of-five AL Division Series at one game apiece. Game 3 is Saturday night in Cleveland. José Ramírez led off the 10th against Jameson Taillion with an opposite-field popup that dropped just in front of left fielder Oswaldo Cabrera for a double and Ramírez took advanced as third baseman Josh Donaldson threw the ball past second for an error. Gonzalez, followed with a soft flare into short right off Taillon. Josh Naylor added an RBI double.

Seattle welcomes back playoffs, M's, try to skip elimination

SEATTLE (AP) — There was bunting draped off the railings in October and logos painted on the grass of T-Mobile Park that were absent for the past two decades when the Seattle Mariners were stuck in baseball purgatory and left as a spectator every postseason. Twenty-one years later, playoff baseball is back in the Pacific Northwest. But unless the hometown team can find some postseason magic, it may just be a one-day cameo for this year. The Mariners will host the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the ALDS looking to avoid elimination after a pair of painful losses in the first two games in Houston.

Bruce Sutter, split-finger ace and Hall of Famer, dies at 69

Hall of Fame reliever and 1979 Cy Young winner Bruce Sutter has died. He was 69. Sutter's son Chad told The Associated Press that Bruce Sutter was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice surrounded by his family. Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a split-fingered fastball. He played 12 seasons in the major leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves in his career. He debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 1976. Sutter won a World Series in 1982 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

NFL says Deshaun Watson status unchanged despite new lawsuit

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The NFL says suspended Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson's status has not been affected by a new civil lawsuit filed by another woman alleging sexual misconduct by Watson. Watson is serving an 11-game suspension for alleged sexual misconduct while he played for the Houston Texans. Two dozen women allege he was sexually inappropriate during massage therapy sessions. The most recent lawsuit was filed this week by a woman who says Watson pressured her into a sex act in 2020. Watson has settled 23 of 24 previous lawsuits filed against him. The league says it will monitor developments in the new litigation.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback was fined $11,139, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because fines aren't announced until Saturday. Jarrett was flagged for slinging Brady to the ground during Tampa Bay's 21-15 victory over Atlanta on Sunday. It appeared Brady tried to kick Jarrett as both players were getting up, but he didn't make contact.

LeBron closing in on Abdul-Jabbar's NBA scoring record

LeBron James has just one player left to catch in his pursuit of the NBA's all-time scoring record. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has held the record for more than 38 years. The two Los Angeles Lakers greats are separated by only 1,325 points as James enters his 20th season. James likely needs somewhere around 50 games this season to catch Abdul-Jabbar. That means the record could fall as early as January.

Westbrook injures hamstring in Lakers' preseason finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Russell Westbrook left the Los Angeles Lakers' preseason finale because of an injured left hamstring after five scoreless minutes off the bench Friday night. Coming off the bench for the first time since he was a rookie, Westbrook entered midway through the first quarter in the Lakers' 133-86 loss to Sacramento. He missed two 3-pointers and had two turnovers. LeBron James led the Lakers with 12 points, playing 20 minutes. LAS VEGAS (AP) — NASCAR will try to put the focus back on racing as the third round of the playoffs begin at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. NASCAR has been under heavy scrutiny after two drivers suffered concussions in crashes in its new Next Gen car. Drivers also have complained that communication with series leaders is terrible. The round of eight begins Sunday. There will be a new Cup champion crowned in four weeks because reigning champion Kyle Larson was eliminated last week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — In one of the wildest playoff games in NFL history, the Bills and Chiefs traded the lead three times and scored 25 points in the final 2 minutes of regulation, including a 13-second field-goal drive by Kansas City to force overtime that folks in Buffalo are still trying to live down.

The Chiefs went on to win that game in January, ending Buffalo’s season at Arrowhead Stadium for the second consecutive year, and leaving Josh Allen and the rest of the heartbroken Bills counting the days until Sunday.

That’s when they get another shot at the team that's becoming their nemesis.

“I mean, I think there are a lot of things you can take away from that game that can help you,” said Allen, whose Bills also lost the 2020 AFC championship game at Kansas City. “Again, that’s neither here nor there right now, but it’s a situation — we can take a lot from that and try to apply to practice and when we play.”

There's an argument to be made both teams are better than they were last year.

The Bills lead the league in passing offense and total offense and are second in scoring. Tops in scoring? That would be the Chiefs, who are fourth in passing offense and sixth in total offense. On the flip side, the Bills are tied for first in scoring defense and No. 2 against the pass and in total defense while Kansas City is third against the rush.

“They’re a really good team. They’ve been there for a long time. Andy Reid-coached football teams win and they win often, and they sustain it and they’re really tough at home,” said Bills coach Sean McDermott, who worked under Reid in Philadelphia more than a decade ago. “So really good opponent. We have a lot of respect for them.”

The respect is mutual, and it's only grown over the years. This will be the fifth time since 2020 the two teams have met, including those two playoff games at Arrowhead Stadium.

“We know it's going to come down to the wire every time we play them,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “To see the guys respond (in January) when it looked like it was over, that's something you're always going to have.”

Indeed, the Bills appeared to have the game won when Gabe Davis caught his playoff-record fourth TD pass to give them a 36-30 lead with 13 seconds left. But that was enough time for Mahomes to complete two long passes and set up Harrison Butker's 49-yard field goal to force overtime, where Kansas City scored on the first possession to win.

To this day, the words “13 seconds" continue to haunt Bills fans.

“Well, I mean, that did happen. That’s part of our past on one hand, but it’s also part of our past,” McDermott said. “This team will take on its own identity. You learn from things like that and you move forward.”

Allen and Mahomes each eclipsed 300 yards passing with three touchdowns, completed at least 70% of their passes without an interception and led their teams with at least 65 yards rushing in their January showdown.

No other quarterback in NFL history has done that in a game, regular or postseason.

The burgeoning rivals are also good friends, though, and found themselves on the same side in June, when they teamed up against Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady in a match-play golf event. Rodgers made a walk-off 15-foot putt for the win.

The Bills' injury report listed 15 players this week with the most notable being safety Jordan Poyer, who sat out last week with a rib injury, and cornerback Christian Benford, who had a broken hand. Linebacker Tremaine Edwards (hamstring) and tight end Dawson Knox (foot/hamstring) also were limited after missing one game apiece.

The Chiefs are thin on defense, where cornerback Rashad Fenton is dealing with a hamstring injury, safety Bryan Cook is in the concussion protocol and defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton is out after tearing his left ACL on Monday night.

After chasing Mahomes for several years in Denver, Bills pass rusher Von Miller finds himself doing it again for Buffalo. But don't think for a moment that there's ill will between them. In fact, the two Texans are quite fond of each other.

“We got the same financial advisor,” Miller said, “so no matter what I do, I could never get away from Patrick Mahomes.”

Fewer than two dozen players have caught four or more TD passes in a game. Two of them will be playing Sunday. Davis did it against Kansas City in January while Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce did it last week against the Raiders, when all four of his touchdown catches came from inside the 10-yard line.

The Bills are 2 1/2-point favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, making it the first time in 42 home starts Mahomes will take the field as an underdog. That includes 11 starts in the playoffs, two of those against Buffalo.

The Hutchinson Community College Men's Basketball team has been tapped as the preseason favorite to win the 2022-23 Jayhawk Conference championship this season.

The league's annual Preseason Coaches' Poll was released on Friday with the Blue Dragons at the top of the list. This is the first time the Dragons have been a preseason pick to win the league since the Covid-shortened 2020-21 season. Last season, the Blue Dragons were picked fifth in the preseason coaches' poll.

Hutchinson, Butler, Coffeyville, Garden City and Cowley are the top five teams in the preseason coaches' coach.

For the second-straight season, the Jayhawk Conference is a 13-team one-division league with the entire league playing a double round-robin schedule.

The Blue Dragons will open the season at home on Tuesday, November 1 against Fort Scott at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Dragons will then play Triton College and NEO in the BSN Tip-Off Classic on November 4-5 at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons will also play host to the Papa Jones Blue Dragon Preseason Jamboree on Sunday, November 23 at the Sports Arena.

Beginning his second season, Blue Dragon head coach Tommy DeSalme returns four players from a 26-9 team that was a Jayhawk Conference and Region VI runner-up and made it to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;saw the most action last season for the Dragons. Garrison averaged 3.9 points and shot 34.4 percent from 3-point range last season. He will be joined by guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>, who played only five games before being lost for the season with an injury. Franklin averaged 12.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

🏀 HutchCC: Blue Dragon men preseason pick to win KJCCC

For the first time since the Covid-shortened 2020-21 season, the Hutchinson Community College Women's Basketball team is the preseason choice to win the Jayhawk Conference, according to the league's annual Coaches' Poll released on Friday.

Head coach John Ontjes begins his 16th season with the Blue Dragons. Only once since 2010 have the Blue Dragons not been picked either first or second in the KJCCC preseason rankings. That was a third-place pick in 2013. The Blue Dragons have never been picked lower than fourth in a preseason poll under Ontjes.

The 2022-23 Blue Dragons will be going after a fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference championship. Last season, Hutchinson shared the title with Independence.

In addition to the conference championship, the Blue Dragons won the Region VI championship and advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament, finishing the season with a 29-6 record.

The Blue Dragons return two starters and six overall letter winners from last season.

First-Team All-American and KJCCC Player of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;is back this season.

Williams led the KJCCC in scoring last season, averaging 18.6 points per game. Williams shot 41.9 percent overall this past season, shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line. Williams' team-high 83 3-point goals were the fourth most by a freshman and ninth most in Blue Dragon history. Her 148 made free throws were second most in freshman history and fifth most in single-season history.

Williams became the Blue Dragons' all-time freshman leader and was No. 2 all-time in Blue Dragon scoring with 651 total points.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/payne_natalie_xv8c">Natalie Payne</a>&nbsp;is a returning starting forward Payne averaged 4.5 points and 3.7 rebounds.

Howard averaged 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Simms averaged 1.8 points and 2.3 rebounds.

Two players lost to injury last season are also back in the mix.

Bruce Sutter, a Hall of Fame reliever and the 1979 Cy Young winner, has died. He was 69.

Sutter
 was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, 
surrounded by his family, one of Sutter's three sons, Chad, told The 
Associated Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame said Bruce Sutter died in 
Cartersville, Georgia.

“All our father ever wanted to be 
remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than 
that,” the Sutter family said in a statement Friday. “He was also a 
great husband to our mother for 50 (years), he was a great father and 
grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game
 of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his 
family.”

Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a
 split-finger fastball. The right-hander played 12 seasons in the major 
leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves over his 
career.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was “deeply saddened" by the news.

“Bruce
 was the first pitcher to reach the Hall of Fame without starting a 
game, and he was one of the key figures who foreshadowed how the use of 
relievers would evolve,” Manfred said in a statement. “Bruce will be 
remembered as one of the best pitchers in the histories of two of our 
most historic franchises.”

Sutter debuted with the Chicago Cubs in
 1976. The reliever won the Cy Young in 1979 in a season where he had 37
 saves, 2.22 ERA and 110 strikeouts.

He joined the St. Louis 
Cardinals and played with them from 1981 to 1984. There, he won a World 
Series in 1982, ending Game 7 against the Brewers with a strikeout.

“Being
 a St Louis Cardinal was an honor he cherished deeply,” the Sutter 
family's statement said. “To the Cardinals, his teammates and most 
importantly to the greatest fans in all of sports, we thank you for all 
of the love and support over the years.”

His last save, No. 300, came with the Atlanta Braves in 1988. Sutter was <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/sutter-bruce">inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006</a>.

“Bruce
 was a fan-favorite during his years in St. Louis and in the years to 
follow, and he will always be remembered for his 1982 World Series

The Cardinals said Sutter is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter-in-law and six grandkids.

 feel like a brother passed away,” Hall of Famer Jim Kaat said. “I knew 
Bruce deeper than just about any other teammate. We spent a lot of time 
together, and as happens when your careers end, you go your separate 
ways. But we stayed in touch and considered each other great friends."

surrounded by his family, one of Sutter's three sons, Chad, told The 
Associated Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame said Bruce Sutter died in 
Cartersville, Georgia.“All our father ever wanted to be 
remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than 
that,” the Sutter family said in a statement Friday. “He was also a 
great husband to our mother for 50 (years), he was a great father and 
grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game
 of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his 
family.”Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a
 split-finger fastball. The right-hander played 12 seasons in the major 
leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves over his 
career.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was “deeply saddened" by the news.“Bruce
 was the first pitcher to reach the Hall of Fame without starting a 
game, and he was one of the key figures who foreshadowed how the use of

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The 38th&nbsp;annual Late Night in the Phog presented by HY-VEE is set for this Friday at 6 p.m., inside historic Allen Fieldhouse, with the&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/jayhawks-expand-digital-presence-with-new-mobile-app/">Official Kansas Athletics App</a>&nbsp;serving as the exclusive spot to stream specific moments of the event for those not in attendance.

Fans not on hand in person will be able to watch portions of the night on the app, which is available on iPhones, Androids and tablets.

The Kansas radio tandem of Brian Hanni and Greg Gurley will be courtside at Late Night to call the action. Through the app, fans can listen to the duo and watch the below moments during the event,

KU coaches Brandon Schneider and Bill Self will address the crowd and will join the radio crew during their respective scrimmages, which can also be viewed on the app. The broadcast will conclude prior to the DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal) performance.

While admission is free for the event, all fans attending must have claimed a ticket during the redemption windows for admission. For the second time in three years, Baylor was chosen by the league’s head coaches to win the Big 12 men’s basketball regular season title. The Bears were also the preseason favorite in 2020-21 and went on to win both the Big 12 and NCAA championships.

Baylor received five first-place votes and totaled 77 points to edge out Kansas for the top spot. The Jayhawks had four first-place nods and 73 points to place second. Texas was picked third with the final first-place vote and 64 points. TCU was chosen fourth followed by a tie for fifth between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. The remainder of the poll included Oklahoma in seventh, Iowa State eighth, West Virginia ninth and Kansas State 10th.

The Big 12 has won the last two national championships as Kansas brought home the 2022 trophy following Baylor’s title in 2021. Big 12 teams have played in the last four Final Fours and the last three national championship games. The Big 12 is the first conference to win back-to-back national championships since 2009 and 2010 and is the only conference to have three different teams play in three consecutive championship games. Sixty percent of Big 12 institutions have advanced to the Final Four since 2002, the highest percentage among conferences.

Head coaches and student-athletes from each team will appear at the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tipoff, presented by Old Trapper in Kansas City on Wednesday October 19. Interviews from the event will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ from 9:00 a.m. - Noon CT. The regular season will start on Monday, November 7 with conference play beginning on New Year’s Eve.

Alvarez was the Game 1 hero with his gut-punch, three-run shot off reigning AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray with two outs in the ninth inning that gave the Astros an 8-7 win. This time, Alvarez sent a drive into the short porch in left field to put the Astros on top 3-2. Game 3 in the best-of-five matchup will be Saturday in Seattle.
