LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;An efficient night, highlighted by junior quarterback Jalon Daniels and sophomore running back Devin Neal, headlined Kansas’ 56-10 win against Tennessee Tech to open the 2022 season at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Friday evening.

A crowd of 34,902 saw Kansas score touchdowns on four of its first five drives of the game. For the contest, Daniels went 15-for-18 for 189 yards and one touchdown. The junior added one rushing score, while Neal had just four rushes for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks (1-0) started fast on offense, scoring touchdowns on each of their first two drives. On the opening drive, Daniels hit redshirt-senior Lawrence Arnold for a 21-yard gain, before Neal scored his first touchdown of the season, when he broke a tackle and scored from 19 yards out.

After a second-straight three-and-out by the Kansas defense, the offense went to work again. This time, Daniels found redshirt-sophomore receiver Quentin Skinner for a 56-yard catch that marked Skinner’s first career catch.

One play later, redshirt-sophomore running back Daniel Hishaw, who missed the 2021 season with an injury, took his first carry of the season nine yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 Jayhawks.

Following two scores on two drives for the offense, the special teams decided to get involved. KU junior defensive end Jereme Robinson blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt by Tennessee Tech’s Devin Parker. Jayhawk sophomore cornerback Cobee Bryant then scooped the ball up and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0, which stood up to be the score at the end of the first quarter.

Tennessee Tech (0-1) got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when Parker converted on a 28-yard field goal.

The Jayhawks answered back later in the quarter when Daniels scampered in from 11 yards out to cap a six-play, 22-yard drive to make it 28-3. Kansas took over at the 22 after a short punt from Tennessee Tech from the endzone.

After a quick stop by the defense, Kansas scored again right before halftime when Daniels found senior tight end Mason Fairchild for a two-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-3; a lead the Jayhawks took into the locker room at halftime.

Neal put KU up 42-3 when he blew past the Golden Eagles defense on an 80-yard jaunt with 4:21 left in the third quarter. Redshirt-sophomore Sevion Morrison opened the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run and redshirt-senior Jason Bean closed out the KU scoring with a seven-yard rush in the final quarter.&nbsp;

Kansas will next travel to Big 12 foe West Virginia (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff from Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va., is slated for 5 p.m. (Central) and the game will be televised on Big 12 NOW on ESPN+.

DETROIT (AP) — Ryan Kreidler scored twice in his major league debut, including the go-ahead run on pinch-hitter Harold Castro’s seventh-inning single, and the Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Friday night.

Batting ninth, Kreidler drew two walks. He lined out in his first at-bat and struck out in his last trip to the plate.

Javier Baez hit a two-run homer and Willi Castro had three hits, including a solo homer. Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak.

Andrew Chafin (1-2) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Gregory Soto struck out the side in the ninth for his 24th save.

Michael A. Taylor hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who have dropped three straight. Carlos Hernandez (0-4) took the loss.

The home opener for the Hutchinson Community College football team was a tremendous success. Now the No. 3 Blue Dragons take their show on the road for the first time this season on Saturday to take on the Ellsworth Panthers.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Cadet Stadium in Iowa Falls, Iowa. This will be the first time Hutchinson and Ellsworth have met since 2019.

Opening week for the Blue Dragons saw sophomore quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;throw for 278 yards and five touchdowns and the Blue Dragon defense shut out Navarro for the first time since Game 5 of 1997, a streak of 257 games.

The third-ranked Blue Dragons scored 35 first-half points en route to a 42-0 victory over No. 13 Navarro at Gowans Stadium.

Laible, who was named both Jayhawk Conference and NJCAA Player of the Week, moved within two touchdowns of Luke Barnes' career record of 50. Laible moved up to third in career passing yards with 3,921 yards. He is 79 yards shy of becoming just the second Blue Dragon quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a career.

As well as the offense clicked against Navarro, the Blue Dragon defense was stellar. Hutchinson forced five takeaways against the Bulldogs and held Navarro to 80 yards rushing and 136 yards passing last week.

Ellsworth continues a daunting opening portion of its schedule with the No. 3-ranked Blue Dragons.

Last week the Panthers opened the season at NJCAA Division III top-ranked and defending D-III national champion College of DuPage and dropped a 48-25 decision. After the Blue Dragons and a bye week next week, the Panthers travel to No. 9 Iowa Central and No. 2 Iowa Western in succession.

Against DuPage, Ellsworth announced 178 rushing yards and 414 yards through the air with four touchdown passes going against them.

The Blue Dragons are riding a seven-game winning streak overall and a three-game win streak over Ellsworth. The last meeting in 2019 was at Iowa Falls, a 41-6 Blue Dragon win

Springfield,&nbsp;MO-&nbsp;The Wind Surge defeated the Cardinals 7-2 on Friday night as the Surge scored six runs in the sixth inning to boost them to their third straight win and a season-high seven game lead to remain in first place.

Aaron Rozek made his third start of the season on the mound for the Surge and pitched three and two thirds’ innings, allowing one run, three hits, and tallied six strikeouts before being relieved by Andrew Cabezas.

Nick Raposo broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run to give Springfield a 1-0 lead. Raposo finished three for five with two RBIs in the game.

The Surge sent eleven hitters to the plate in the sixth inning as they scored six runs behind RBI singles from Severino, Keirsey Jr., and Julien. Aaron Sabato scored on an error by Springfield catcher Aaron Antonini to give Wichita a commanding 6-1 lead.

Surge win third straight in Springfield

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk football team took a shot in the mouth early in the game Friday night by showed character and poise to rally back with two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to defeat Goddard-Eisenhower 27-20 in the season opener for both teams for 2022.

Goddard-Eisenhower got things going quickly with a 91 yard strike from Tyner Horn to Carter Pabst on the first play of the game to jump on top of Hutch 7-0 early.

Hutch responded with a 1 yard plunge by Nick Lang to tie things up at 7-7 moments later. Then Eisenhower took a two touchdown lead 20-7 on two more Carter Pabst catches to lead 20-7 in the 2nd quarter.&nbsp;

The Salthawks drove the ball right down the field but fell short after Daniel Hernandez caught the ball but was downed on the one foot line as time ran out in the first half with Goddard-Eisenhower leading 20-14.

Hernandez made up for not getting into the end zone quickly in the 3rd quarter as he returned the 2nd half kick-off 72 yards to tie things up at 20-20 with 11:46 remaining in the third.&nbsp; Runyon's point after game Hutch the lead 21-20 just 1 play deep into the third quarter.

On the next Eisenhower possession, Mason Jones intercepted a Horn pass to set Hutchinson up the the Eisenhower 11 yard line. Nick Lang then scored his 2nd touchdown of the night with another 1 yard QB sneak to put the Salthawks on top 27-20. The snap was bobbled on the point after, but Hutch still had a 7 point lead.

In the final seconds of the ball game, Eisenhower was on the drive, but Jax Heneha picked off the 2nd Horn interception at the 50 yard line and returned it deep into Goddard-Eisenhower territory.&nbsp; A Hutch block in the back on the return place the ball at the Eisenhower 35 and Hutchinson got a big catch on 3rd down by Noah Khokhar to allow the Salthawks to take a knee and run out the clock for the win.

Hutchinson (1-0) travels to Newton next Friday, while the Tigers host Salina South at home in Goddard.

Springfield, MO- The Wind Surge defeated the Springfield Cardinals 12-8 on Thursday night behind seventeen hits and three home runs to take the series lead.

The Surge struck first in the top of the first inning as Aaron Sabato hit a three-run homer to give Wichita an early 3-0 lead. Sabato finished three for five with three RBIs in the game.

Yunior Severino finished one for three with two RBIs including a sacrifice fly in the third inning that scored Edouard Julien and extended Wichita’s lead to 4-0.

Irving Lopez got the Cardinals on the board in the third inning with an RBI double that scored Justin Toerner and cut the deficit to 4-1.

Julien busted the game open in the fourth inning as he hit Wichita’s second three-run homer of the night and extended the lead to 8-1.

The Cardinals shrunk Wichita’s lead to 9-8 in the eighth inning as they scored two runs as Nick Raposo scored on a fielder’s choice and Justin Toerner later scored on a wild pitch by reliever Denny Bentley.

Kyle Schmidt hit a two-run RBI single in the ninth inning that extended the lead to 12-8. Schmidt finished one for four with two RBIs in the game. Jordan Gore earned the win in relief.

Backed by the eighth-fastest time in course history by freshman Serenity Larson, the Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team placed second in the season-opening 2022 Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Thursday night at Fun Valley.

Larson ran a Blue Dragon-debut time of 18 minutes, 21.92 seconds to lead a group of four Hutchinson runners placing in the Top 25.

The Blue Dragons scored 85 team points to finish runner-up in the team competition. That’s the best finish at the Masterson since back-to-back third-place performances in 2019 and 2020. The Blue Dragons’ best finish in the Masterson was a team title in 2018.

Fort Hays State had 5 of the top 7 runners and won the women’s team title with 21 points. Tabor was third with 130 points. Newman University was fourth with 144 and Dodge City was fifth with 151.

The Masterson Twilight men’s race is still unofficial as of late Thursday night. Final results will be posted sometime on Friday.

In one of the fastest Masterson women’s races since the race moved to the 3-mile format at Fun Valley in 2017 – the Top 11 times on Thursday were Top 25 all-time performances – individual champion Gretchen Kuffel of Fort Hays State and runner-up Shareen Cheruiyot of Garden City both beat the old course record with times of 17:39.07 and 17:58.94, respectively.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.  — The Wind Surge made a comeback late to spoil Jack Flaherty’s rehab start after defeating the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 5-4 Wednesday. 

Wichita took the lead in the ninth behind a bases-loaded single from Edouard Julien that brought home Anthony Prato and Will Holland. The win is the first of the season for the Wind Surge when trailing after eight innings (1-40).

Both pitchers were dealing to start the game tonight. Cody Laweryson for the Surge had five strikeouts and Flaherty struck out six Surge batters through the first three innings. Flaherty finished with nine strikeouts after going six and two thirds innings.

Springfield broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning after an RBI single from Irving Lopez. Laweryson was relieved by Bryan Sammons with the Cardinals leading 1-0.

Julio Rodriguez extended the Cardinals’ lead with a three-run home run in the sixth. Rodriguez finished the night 2-4 with three RBI’s.

The Wind Surge brought the game within one in the seventh inning. Leobaldo Cabrera recorded his 26th RBI of the season on a single to right. Austin Martin followed it up with a two-run triple that scored Prato and Cabrera.

Alex Phillips recorded the win after pitching two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth inning.

Anthony Prato and Will Holland both walked to start the ninth inning. Martin reached on a fielding error to load the bases for the Surge. Julien recorded his 59thand 60th RBIs that gave the Surge the late lead.

Casey Legumina recorded his first save of the season after striking out one batter in the ninth and retiring the Cardinals in order.

⚾ Surge win in rally Wednesday

CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched four-hit ball through seven innings, Elvis Andrus hit a tiebreaking home run in the fifth and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Wednesday night to snap a five-game losing streak.

Lynn (4-5), who was reinstated from the bereavement list before the game, didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight for the fifth time this season. The Royals had scored 24 runs in their previous two games.

Chicago (64-66) won for the first time under bench coach Miguel Cairo, who served his second game as acting manager while Tony La Russa is on indefinite leave while he undergoes tests performed by his personal doctors in Arizona to address an unspecified health issue.

“After the last out, he always says, ’twenty-seven outs,’ “ Cairo said. “ ‘And until that last out, you cannot feel comfortable until they get that last out.’

“That’s the feeling. Big deep breath, and let it go and do it again (Thursday).”

The Royals (53-78) lost for the third time in five games. Rookie Bobby Witt hit his 19th home run off Lynn in the fourth, a shot to center that traveled an estimated 441 feet.

Witt’s homer was the 58th hit by a Royals rookie this season, extending the franchise record of 56 set in their inaugural season in 1969.

The Royals didn’t score again until two out in the ninth on a triple by Michael A. Taylor and a single by Michael Massey. Chicago’s Liam Hendriks struck out Hunter Dozier to earn his 29th save.

“Obviously everybody is a little down when you lose your manager,” Lynn said. “You hope that everything is good and everything checks out good. He has some stuff he has to take care of, and we have to do our part to stay in this race.”

Lynn retired the first 10 batters before Witt’s homer, and he immediately loaded the bases before coaxing Dozier to ground into an inning-ending double play.

That turned out to be the break the Sox needed, as AJ Pollock led off the bottom of the fourth by poking a low, outside pitch over the right field fence to tie the game.

Lynn is 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his last four starts.

Royals left-hander Kris Bubic (2-10) threw 26 pitches in the first and loaded the bases before getting Pollock to pop to first and Yasmani Grandal to line out to right. Grandal returned from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and was reinstated from the 10-day injured list before the game.

Bubic walked three of the first seven batters he faced, but was undone by the homers. Andrus hit his home run two pitches after missing a pitch on a hit-and-run play that resulted in Romy Gonzalez getting thrown out at second.

Bubic has allowed four homers in his last two starts after pitching 24 consecutive innings without allowing a homer. He is 0-4 lifetime against the Sox, despite posting a 2.76 ERA in nine games.

“He made good pitches when he had to get us out of trouble,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He was in a mess from the top, but made the pitches, and guys made the plays behind him.”

The Sox added two insurance runs in the seventh on a grounder by Andrus and a two-out single by Jose Abreu.

Andrus became the 13th Sox player to bat leadoff, tying a franchise record set in 1976.

“It was a good game for us to go out there and compete and do it for (La Russa), knowing that every time we play good, he’s going to feel a lot better,” Andrus said.

Royals: C Salvador Perez (back tightness) was scratched from the lineup and is listed as day to day. “The longer he sat around after his pregame routine, it tightened up,” Matheny said.

White Sox: CF Luis Robert (left wrist soreness) missed his fifth consecutive start and remains day to day, Cairo said. Robert entered in the ninth as a defensive replacement.

White Sox: To make room for Lynn and Grandal, LHP Tanner Banks and C Carlos Perez were optioned to Charlotte.

⚾ White Sox win over Royals Wednesday

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – The Hutchinson Community College Women’s Soccer team opened the 2022 Jayhawk Conference season with a key 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Blue Devils on Wednesday at the KCK Soccer Complex.

The Blue Dragons start a season 3-0 for the first time since 2018. The Dragons are 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Blue Dragons play their 2022 home opener on Sunday afternoon where they play host Western Wyoming at 2 p.m. at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Before the Blue Dragons’ game, Western Wyoming will play Allen at 11 a.m.

Tied at 1-1, sophomore Emma Scholl scored the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute when she scored her second goal of the season off a Julia De Souza pass.

The Blue Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when sophomore Hadlie Lowe took a Jayda Wyatt pass on the left side of the box and drove in to score her fifth goal of the season. With her 23rd career goal, Lowe moves into sole possession of 16th place on the Blue Dragon career goals list. Lowe has scored goals in three-straight games to open the season.

After leading 2-1 at halftime, the Blue Dragons controlled possession for most the second half. After back-to-back-to-back corner kick opportunities midway through the second half, freshman Kendra Brungardt scored her first career goal, scoring off an Ella-Mae Miller corner kick to give Hutchinson aa 3-1 lead in the 71st minute.

The Blue Dragons out-shot the Blue Devils 13-6, including 7-3 in shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona (2-0) earned the victory with three saves.

The Blue Dragons generated eight corner kicks, including seven in the second half.

The Dragons are 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Blue Dragons play their 2022 home opener on Sunday afternoon where they play host Western Wyoming at 2 p.m. at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Before the Blue Dragons’ game, Western Wyoming will play Allen at 11 a.m.Tied at 1-1, sophomore Emma Scholl scored the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute when she scored her second goal of the season off a Julia De Souza pass.The Blue Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when sophomore Hadlie Lowe took a Jayda Wyatt pass on the left side of the box and drove in to score her fifth goal of the season. With her 23rd career goal, Lowe moves into sole possession of 16th place on the Blue Dragon career goals list. Lowe has scored goals in three-straight games to open the season.After leading 2-1 at halftime, the Blue Dragons controlled possession for most the second half. After back-to-back-to-back corner kick opportunities midway through the second half, freshman Kendra Brungardt scored her first career goal, scoring off an Ella-Mae Miller corner kick to give Hutchinson aa 3-1 lead in the 71st minute.The Blue Dragons out-shot the Blue Devils 13-6, including 7-3 in shots on goal.Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona (2-0) earned the victory with three saves.The Blue Dragons generated eight corner kicks, including seven in the second half.GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 6-0-1 all-time vs. Kansas City. … The Blue Dragons capture their 150th all-time conference game in program history. LIBERAL – Freshman Taniya Golden had a career-high 20 kills, but the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end with a four-set Jayhawk West loss at Seward County in a nationally ranked matchup.

The No. 13 Blue Dragons won the first set, but struggled the rest of the match in a 25-22, 19-25, 25-27, 20-25 loss to the No. 17 Saints at the Greenhouse.

Hutchinson falls to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons return home on Friday for a triangular with Cloud County and the Friends University JV at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons hit .333 in the opening set, but only .155 over the final three set. The Blue Dragons were out-blocked by the Saints 14-8.

Golden led the Blue Dragons with 20 kills on .393 hitting.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno had 12 kills on just .105 hitting. She had four of Hutchinson’s seven service aces. Freshman Anna Dean had five of her eight kills in the opening set.

Sophomore middle Blondie Penaflor had six total blocks, including one solo block. Baylee Miller had four blocks.

Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 22 assists. Sophomore Andrea Serrano had 16 assists. Sophomore Morgan Harvey had a team-high 10 digs. Freshman Perrine Blanc had six digs.

Seward County hit .385 for the match with Seyun Park leading the Saints with 15 kills, all 15 kills in the final three sets.

The Blue Dragons served strong in the opening set with five aces and the Blue Dragons had six kills on Saints overpasses. Dean had five kills and Golden had four kills in the set. The Blue Dragons took a 15-10 lead on a Dean kill. The Saints eventually tied the set at 20, but a Dean kill and Ravenhani ace started a 5-2 Blue Dragon run, closing out a 25-22 win with a Briseno ace.

Hutchinson trailed the second set 10-9, but the Saints scored five in a row and eight of the next 10 rallies to build an 18-11 lead. A Golden kill cut the Dragons within 20-18, but the Saints scored 5 of the final 6 points to close out the set and tie the match at 1-1.

Four early kills by Briseno got the Blue Dragons out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. A Golden kill gave the Dragons a 13-6 lead. The Saints roared back into the set with a 12-4 run to take an 18-17 lead. The lead changed hands four different times from that point. A Penaflor kill gave the Dragons a 22-21 lead. Seward scored the next three points and had a pair of set points in hand. A Golden kill and Penaflor solo block tied the set at 24-all. A Miller kill tied the set at 25, but the Saints scored the final two points for a 27-25 win.

After three early ties in the fourth set, Seward County built a 6-3 lead and the Dragons never could get the lead back. Trailing 12-9, the Dragons scored three in a row to tie the set. Seward answered with a 4-1 run. A Golden kills pulled the Dragons within 20-19, but the Saints scored 6 of the match’s final 7 points to close out the Dragons.

Oklahoma and Texas are set to leave for the Southeastern Conference at the end of the Big 12's current deal. Football independent BYU, along with American Athletic Conference schools Cincinnati, Houston and UCF join the current 10-team Big 12 next summer.

UNDATED (AP) — The university presidents who oversee the College Football Playoff are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss expanding the four-team format. The presidents hope to accelerate a process that bogged down last year and re-open the possibility that a new model for crowning champion could be implemented as soon as the 2024 season. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the CFP’s Board of Managers, led by Mississippi State President Mark Keenum, is set to convene by video conference. All the people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the board's plans were not being made public.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden says he is “ashamed” about his old offensive emails that cost him his job and hopes to get another chance in football. Gruden spoke publicly about the affair at the Little Rock Touchdown Club for the first time since he resigned as coach of the Raiders last October. The resignation followed the publication by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal of emails he had sent from 2011 to 2018 that contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield denies that he said anything malicious toward his former team, the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield said “first, I didn’t say that" and added that “everybody is going to write what they want.” Mayfield said he was shocked to hear the report on Tuesday that NFL Network analytics analyst Cynthia Frelund, who was working as a Buffalo Bills sideline reporter for Friday night’s preseason game against Carolina, said on a podcast that Mayfield had some choice words for his former team. Louise Cocking is a rare commodity entering the 2022 cross country season for Hutchinson Community College

Cocking, a sophomore from Derbyshire, England, will be a rare third-year participant for the Blue Dragons this season.

Cocking’s resume as a Blue Dragon cross country runner is impressive:

+ She finished fifth in the NJCAA National Championships and became the first Blue Dragon to earn first-team NJCAA All-America honors.

+ Last season, Cocking finished 21st nationally and earned NJCAA Coaches All-America honors.

+ Cocking owns the third-fastest 5,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history (18:56.42).

+ In addition to her cross country achievement, Cocking is a two-time NJCAA Track and Field All-American with school records in the indoor 3,000 meters and outdoor 10,000 meters.

“It’s good to have everybody back,” seventh-year cross country coach Justin Riggs said. “Obviously, we’re excited about that. (Louise) has proven to be one of the best distance runners in the NJCAA for the last couple of years.”

Along with the third-year sophomore are Syndey Grauer (Marysville), who is another top 5 contributor and Aidyn White (Buhler). Courtney Baetz (Downs) is another sophomore returning. She didn’t run for the cross country team last season, but was on the 2022 Blue Dragon men’s track and field team.

Riggs brings in a talented group of freshmen who are going to make things interesting this season.

During the team’s annual Time Trial two weeks ago, Cocking ran the fastest time trial time of her career … and finished fourth.

Among the new Hutchinson runners, Riggs has freshmen Gracie Lambert (Lindsborg) and Taylor Hoskinson (Haven), who had great running careers in high school. Lambert, from Smoky Valley, was the Class 3A 800- and 1,600-meter state champion this past year. Hoskinson competed in the two same races at the state meet and took fourth in the 800 and fifth in the mile. Hoskinson was the 3A regional champion in the 800. Lambert was also a regional champion in the 800.

Serenity Larson also comes in from Dodge City a state qualifier and top 12 finisher in the mile and two-mile races in track.

Last season, the Blue Dragon women posted their second-straight Top 15 national finish with a 12th-place showing in the NJCAA Championships. The Dragons finished fourth in Region VI and third in the Jayhawk West.

One sophomore returns in Carsyn Turpin (Shawnee). He will have some help with a bunch of talented in-state freshmen runners.

Hayden Keller, a freshman from Buhler, finished in the top 20 at the state cross country meet where his school won its fourth straight team title. He was also the regional runner-up and also qualified and finished in the top 10 in the 800 and 1,600 in 4A at the state track meet.

Louis Wilson from Topeka West and Douwe Benesink from The Netherlands are also expected to be solid contributors to the team.

“We’ll got a lot less experience on the men, but I’m excited about that,” Riggs said. “It’ll be kind of a learning curve. The men go from racing 5K in high school to 8K at the college level. It takes a good adjustment, especially for the freshman. It’ll be a lot of learning experiences this year, but we’ve got a pretty solid squad there, I think.”

The men’s team didn’t post league, regional or championship team scores last season with only four runners competing at the end of 2021.

He will have some help with a bunch of talented in-state freshmen runners.Hayden Keller, a freshman from Buhler, finished in the top 20 at the state cross country meet where his school won its fourth straight team title. He was also the regional runner-up and also qualified and finished in the top 10 in the 800 and 1,600 in 4A at the state track meet.Louis Wilson from Topeka West and Douwe Benesink from The Netherlands are also expected to be solid contributors to the team.“We’ll got a lot less experience on the men, but I’m excited about that,” Riggs said. “It’ll be kind of a learning curve. The men go from racing 5K in high school to 8K at the college level. It takes a good adjustment, especially for the freshman. It’ll be a lot of learning experiences this year, but we’ve got a pretty solid squad there, I think.”The men’s team didn’t post league, regional or championship team scores last season with only four runners competing at the end of 2021.The Blue Dragons cross country season begins with the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic Thursday at the Fun Valley Sports Complex. The women will lead off the night with their race at 8:30 p.m. with the men’s race following at 9:05 p.m.
