IRVING, Texas—Adrian Martinez had done just about everything in his first four years of college football except play on a winning team.

Those wins are finally coming for him at Kansas State.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) sit atop the Big 12 standings in large part because of their dual-threat quarterback. He rushed for a combined 319 yards and acounted for nine touchdowns in breakout performances against Oklahoma and Texas Tech before he led the Wildcats to a grind-it-out victory at Iowa State last week.

Martinez has won three straight games for the first time after never winning more than two in a row at Nebraska. He was picked as the Big 12's top first-year transfer at midseason in a vote of Associated Press writers covering the conference.

Martinez set more than a dozen records in his time at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers were just 15-29 while he often played hurt.

His 48 turnovers (30 interceptions, 18 fumbles) were most in the Bowl Subdivision from 2018-21, according to Sportradar. So far at K-State he has not thrown an interception or lost a fumble.

Martinez averages 241 yards of total offense per game to rank sixth in the Big 12, and he's fourth in rushing at 91 yards per game.

A key point of the early season was a 17-10 home loss to Tulane on Sept. 17. Martinez acknowledged he had played tentatively, and coach Chris Klieman and offensive coordinator Collin Klein sat him down and told him to forget about the possibility of making mistakes and let his natural ability take over.

“”That really speaks to the culture of this team and program, the leadership of coach Klieman and some of the older guys on this squad," Martinez said. “We were determined not to let it ruin our season. All our goals are still on the horizon. The Big 12, that's all it's about.”

QB Max Duggan, TCU (5-0, 2-0). He started 29 games for the Horned Frogs pre-Sonny Dykes and then lost the job to Chandler Morris in preseason practices. Morris sprained a knee in the opener against Colorado and hasn't been seen since. Duggan, meanwhile, has thrown for 261 yards per game with 14 touchdowns against one interception. He's second to Ohio State's C.J. Stroud in passer rating (194.36) and yards per attempt (10.3).

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Kansas State. One of the most disruptive forces in the Big 12, he's building on a 2021 season that saw him earn all-conference first-team honors. He's tied for second nationally with 6.5 sacks. His two forced fumbles give him eight in 24 games, with his 0.33 career average best among active FBS players.

Kansas second-year coach Lance Leipold is known as a program builder, and his work with the No. 19 Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1) could be his best yet. The Jayhawks are ranked this season for the first time since 2009 and are one win from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Leipold has done it with a big-play offense that has 19 plays of at least 30 yards and a defense fortified by a couple of key transfers.

Kansas was the easy choice, and last week's narrow home loss to TCU didn't do much to diminish the magnitude of what's happening in Lawrence. This is a program that hasn't won a conference championship in football since 1968, and it lost 91 of 97 Big 12 games under five coaches before Leipold took over last year. The Jayhawks still have a long list of accomplishments they would like to check off. The next opportunity comes Saturday when they go for their first win at Oklahoma since 1996.

Kansas QB Jalon Daniels was among the nation's most efficient passers until he injured a shoulder in the first half against TCU. He's doubtful for the game at OU. Daniels has thrown for 11 touchdowns and run for five, has been intercepted just once, and averages 234.5 yards of total offense per game. His six runs of at least 20 yards are second-most in the Big 12 and he's had eight passes go for at least 30.

Oklahoma (3-3) looked every bit the top-10 team it was when it won 49-14 at Nebraska. Now first-year coach Brent Venable's Sooners are 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998 and coming off a 49-0 beatdown by Texas that was their most lopsided loss in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners' offense has gone dormant in the absence of QB Dillon Gabriel, who's been out with a concussion since Oct. 1.

West Virginia coach Neal Brown is 2-3 in his fourth season and finding four more wins to get to .500 in the regular season won't be easy. One of the wins was against FCS Towson. Brown was one of the hot coaches after three straight double-digit-win seasons at Troy, but he's 19-21 at West Virginia. The Mountaineers are approaching four straight years without an appearance in the AP poll, which would be the program's longest stretch since 1959-68.

Gabriel was one of the Big 12's top transfers when he moved from Central Florida to Oklahoma and was sharp as he led the Sooners to a 3-0 start. He got outplayed by Martinez in the loss to K-State and has been out since the second quarter against TCU, when he took a devastating hit from Jamoi Hodge. WICHITA – Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/galvin_louis_mscz">Louis Galvin</a>&nbsp;tied for 10th to lead the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational at Crestview Country Club's North Course on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons closed out the fall season in tough scoring conditions posting a final-round 298 on Tuesday to finish the 54-hole tournament at 872.

Wichita State won the team title at 853. Utah Valley was second at 857 and Northern Iowa was third at 869.

The Blue Dragons were the highest-placing junior college team in the 10-team field. District III rival Indian Hills placed fifth at 876.

Galvin was the only Blue Dragon to place in the individual Top 10. He shot a 6-over 77 on Tuesday and closed at 4-over 217.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;was the only Blue Dragon to shoot below par on Tuesday. Clemons had a 71 in the final round and tied for 16th at 218.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;also tied for 16th at 218. Lindstrom shot a 75 on Tuesday.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/saffell_blake_2ov2">Blake Saffell</a>&nbsp;tied for 20th at 219. Saffell closed with a 76.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/ross_louis_7khj">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;placed 60th at 237 after a final-round 80.

A person familiar with the process tells The Associated Press that the NFL is reviewing Adams’ actions. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league hadn’t made the review public. Detectives from the Kansas City Police Department’s assault unit are investigating the incident. NFL Network was the first to report that Adams could face discipline.

Houston was down 7-5 when rookie pinch-hitter David Hensley was hit by a pitch from Seattle closer Paul Sewald and Jeremy Peña singled with two outs. Los Angeles dominated in the regular season, owning a 14-5 advantage and outscoring San Diego 109-47. The 111-win Dodgers claimed the NL West and the Padres finished second, 22 games back. With Sandy Koufax watching from the owners’ box, 17-game winner Julio Urías retired the first eight batters. Chris Martin pitched a scoreless ninth for Los Angeles. Struggling closer Craig Kimbrel was left off the Dodgers’ roster for this best-of-five matchup. Game 2 is Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

NEW YORK (AP) — Gerrit Cole cruised for most of the night, Harrison Bader and Anthony Rizzo homered and the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 in their AL Division Series opener. ATLANTA (AP) — Nick Castellanos drove in three runs and made a potentially game-saving catch in the ninth inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies over the reigning World Series champion Atlanta Braves 7-6 in the opener of their NL Division Series. The Phillies have won three straight games to begin these playoffs, hardly looking like a team making its first postseason appearance since 2011. They followed up their wild-card sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a victory over the team that finished 14 games ahead of them in the NL East. It wasn’t easy. Matt Olson hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Zach Eflin to bring the Braves within a run.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A former Los Angeles Angels employee has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for providing Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs the drugs that led to his overdose death in Texas. Eric Kay didn’t react when U.S. District Judge Terry R. Means read the sentence. Kay faced at least 20 years in prison on one of the two counts. There was no reaction from Skaggs’ widow and mother or members of Kay’s family. One of Kay's sons testified on his behalf. The 27-year-old Skaggs choked to death on his vomit with a toxic mix of alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone in his system.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas will likely be without star quarterback Jalon Daniels, who hurt his right shoulder in last week's loss to TCU, leaving backup Jason Bean to start when the No. 19 Jayhawks visit struggling Oklahoma on Saturday.

Daniels was hurt just before halftime of the 38-31 loss when he was scrambling toward the sideline and was sacked by the Horned Frogs' Jamoi Hodge. He was evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room ahead of the rest of the team for more tests. When he returned to the sideline in the second half, Daniels was dressed in sweats.

“Jalon did not practice today and would probably be put in the doubtful area,” Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday. “Again, looking at it day to day, but hasn't done anything yet and that's probably the extent I will comment at this time.”

Daniels had been the catalyst behind the Jayhawks' 5-0 start to the season, earning early Heisman Trophy consideration by throwing for 1,072 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception while running for 335 yards and five more scores.

He was 5 of 10 for 89 yards and had run seven times for 6 yards before leaving the game against the Horned Frogs.

Bean, who started nine games last season before getting hurt, nearly rallied the Jayhawks to the win.

The senior opened with a tying touchdown pass to Mason Fairchild, then connected with Luke Grimm and Quentin Skinner on TD tosses later in the third quarter. Bean threw a fourth touchdown pass to Skinner with 4:29 left, knotting it 31-all, but TCU's Max Duggan answered with a go-ahead touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston with 1:36 to go.

Bean had the Jayhawks on the move one last time, but a fourth-down pass from the TCU 34 fell incomplete with 37 seconds left. Wide receiver Lawrence Arnold appeared to be held on the play but no flag was thrown. And all the Horned Frogs had to do was snap the ball, take a knee and let the clock run out to remain unbeaten.

“No matter who’s in,” Bean said, “we have the ability to go down and score the ball.”

Bean finished 16 of 24 for 262 yards, matched a career best with the four TD throws and added 34 yards rushing. But he also threw an inexplicable interception deep in Kansas territory, and TCU reached the end zone five plays later.

Still, it was an impressive performance on short notice, and now Bean will have first-team reps all week in practice to get ready for the Sooners, who are coming off an embarrassing 49-0 loss to Texas in the Red River Showdown.

“It’s really a credit to him. We all recognize that,” Leipold said of the dual-threat quarterback from Mansfield, Texas. “I stood here in August and talked about (Bean) playing well, and it wasn’t just to appease him.”

One thing the Jayhawks have going in their favor is that the styles of Bean and Daniels are similar. Both are speedy quarterbacks capable of running the option, scrambling and making plays in space, and that means Leipold and Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki won't have to make wholesale changes to the game plan.

“You're always going to tweak to somebody's strengths, but you know, the call sheet is the call sheet and we're going to continue to do what we can to be as multiple as possible,” Leipold said. “If he ends up being there for a while, I'm sure there are things he's more comfortable with than other plays or something that Jalon runs, but again, that hasn't been a heavy dose of conversation yet.”

The Blue Dragons moved up four spots in the latest national rankings with a 2-0 victory over then-No. 12 Barton and a 3-1 victory over Garden City last week.

Hutchinson and Barton are tied at the top of the Jayhawk West standings with 24 points. Barton is 8-1 and the Blue Dragons are 8-2. The Dragons have three regular-season games remaining with Dodge City, Cowley and Barton.

The freshman kicker from Maize was named the Jayhawk Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Segraves had career highs for number of field goals and long field goal on Saturday. Segraves was 4 of 4 on field goals, making from 35, 33, 45 and a career-long 46 yards. He was also 5 of 5 on extra-point attempts for a career single-game high 17 points.

Segraves is the first kicker since Kevin Coleman in 2004 to make four field goals in a single game in Blue Dragon history.

Segraves is the second Blue Dragon this season to earn KJCCC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/roper_darby_wdm8">Darby Roper</a>&nbsp;earned the honor in Week 2.

For the second time in three weeks, Hutchinson Community College women's soccer players&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/lowe_hadlie_mqp8">Hadlie Lowe</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/quarles_madison_h89v">Madison Quarles</a>&nbsp;swept Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week honors.

Lowe was named the league's Division I Women's Soccer Player of the Week and Quarles was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Week after the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons defeated No. 12 Barton 2-0 and Garden City 3-1 last week.

Two weeks ago Lowe, a sophomore forward from Wichita, and Quarles, a sophomore from Olathe, swept Player and Keeper of the Week honors.

Six different times this season, the Blue Dragons (11-2, 8-2 Jayhawk West) have earned KJCCC weekly honors. Aimee Mayer was named Player of the Week on September 20 and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/felix-cardona_olivia_1k3f">Olivia Felix-Cardona</a>&nbsp;was the Goalkeeper of the Week on September 6.

Lowe scored three goals, including a pair of markers in a shutout victory over No. 12 Barton.

Lowe had two goals against Barton and added another in a 3-1 win over Garden City. Lowe now has 12 goals and 31 points this season. She ranks third in both categories in the Jayhawk Conference.

Quarles made a career-high nine saves to help the No. 19 ranked Blue Dragons to a key 2-0 Jayhawk West victory over No. 12 Barton in Quarles' lone action last week.

Quarles recorded her third shutout of the season. She kept the high-scoring Cougars off the scoreboard, making a highlight-reed kick save in the second half on a scramble in front of the net after a Barton corner kick.

Quarles now leads the Jayhawk in save percentage (.864) and goals-against average (0.58).

Roughing-the-passer call prompts officiating scrutiny

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A controversial roughing-the-passer penalty just before halftime of the Las Vegas Raiders' game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night delivered another blow to the NFL and its beleaguered officiating crew. The Chiefs had just scored to trim their deficit to 17-7 just before halftime when Chris Jones stripped Derek Carr from behind. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle landed on the Raiders quarterback while also coming away with the ball, and replays showed it was clearly loose and that Jones clearly recovered, but referee Carl Cheffers threw a flag for roughing the passer. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders were oh-so-close to finally getting the best of the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. Then a video review overturned a catch by Davante Adams that would have put them in field-goal range, and an ensuing fourth-down throw was incomplete, allowing the Chiefs to escape with a 30-29 victory. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Raiders against their biggest nemesis, and their ninth in their last 10 meetings. Panthers fire Matt Rhule after 1-4 start; Wilks takes over

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have fired coach Matt Rhule, ending the former Baylor coach's tenure five games into his third losing season. Rhule is the first NFL coach to be fired this season. He went 11-27 with Carolina and leaves with roughly $40 million left on the seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract he signed in 2020. Defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach Steve Wilks will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones believes the NFL should allow video review of roughing-the-passer penalties after his controversial call — the second in as many days — nearly cost the Kansas City Chiefs in their come-from-behind 30-29 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night.

The Chiefs had just scored to trim their deficit to 17-7 when Jones stripped Raiders quarterback Derek Carr from behind just before halftime. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle landed on Carr while also coming up with the ball — replays showed it was clearly loose and that Jones cleanly recovered — but referee Carl Cheffers threw a flag for roughing the passer.

The play happened with less than two minutes to go and was not reviewed.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid stormed off the sideline to argue with every official within earshot. And after the teams traded field goals, leaving the Raiders ahead 20-10 at halftime, Reid cornered Cheffers again as they headed to the locker room.

"The quarterback is in the pocket and he's in a passing posture. He gets full protection of all the aspects of what we give the quarterback in a passing posture," Cheffers told a pool reporter after the game. "My ruling was the defender landed on him with full body weight. The quarterback is protected from being tackled with full body weight."

That explanation didn't sit well in the Kansas City locker room.

"It's costing teams games," Jones said. "How should I tackle people? How should I not roll on him? I'm trying my best. I'm 325 pounds, OK? What do you want me to do? I'm going full speed trying to get the quarterback."

When players emerged for the second half, Kansas City fans booed Cheffers more loudly than the hated Raiders (1-4), and the call — and the energized Arrowhead Stadium — seemed to galvanize their team. Travis Kelce had three of his fourth TD catches in the second second half and the defense made a stand in the final minute to escape with the win.

"I've seen (Reid) angry," Mahomes said later, "but not about a call on the football field."

The call came one day after Atlanta defensive tackle Grady Jarrett was flagged by referee Jerome Boger for a seemingly innocuous tackle of Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady. The penalty gave the Buccaneers a first down and allowed them to run out the clock on a 21-15 victory, rather than giving the Falcons a chance to drive for the win.

"What I had was the defender grabbed the quarterback while he was still in the pocket, and unnecessarily throwing him to the ground," Boger told a pool reporter after the game. "That is what I was making my decision based upon."

The NFL was criticized for its failure to protect quarterbacks after Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was taken off the field on a stretcher following a violent hit in a game against Cincinnati. Tagovailoa sustained a concussion when his head slammed to the turf on a tackle by the Bengals' Josh Tupou, who was not flagged on the play.

In the NFL rulebook, it states: "Any physical acts against a player who is in a passing posture (i.e. before, during, or after a pass) which, in the referee's judgment, are unwarranted by the circumstances of the play will be called as fouls."

The rulebook also notes: "When in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactic against the quarterback, the referee should always call roughing the passer."

Jones offered a solution: Allow replays of roughing-the-passer calls.

"Especially in critical situations in games," he said. "We've got to be able to review it in the booth, you know what I mean? I think that's the next step for the NFL as a whole. If we're going to call it penalty at that high (of rate), then we've got to be able to review it and make sure, because sometimes looks can be deceiving."

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have had plenty of conflicts with Cheffers in the past.

The biggest came during the 2016 playoffs against Pittsburgh, when Cheffers called left tackle Eric Fisher for holding that negated what would have been a tying two-point conversion. The Steelers won 18-16 to advance to the AFC title game, and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said Cheffers "shouldn't even be able to work at ... Foot Locker."

Their opinion of the referee surely didn't improve Monday night.

"You want to protect the players in all aspects of the game, but at the same time, there's a commonsense factor," Mahomes said. "The refs watch tape and they practice, just like we do. I'm sure they'll go back and make the corrections."
