GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kliff Kingsbury was a fan of Patrick Mahomes before it became cool.

It was nearly 10 years ago that Kingsbury — who was trying to build his program at Texas Tech — ventured to East Texas and decided the little-known, unpolished Mahomes was his quarterback of the future.

“They were really the first and only,” Mahomes said. “I didn’t get recruited much. I got a couple other offers from small schools in Texas, but they’re the ones that came down and saw me and talked to my family and believed in me.”

Turns out Kingsbury has a pretty good eye for talent.

Nearly a decade later, the mentor and student meet again in the NFL.

Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs travel to face Kingsbury’s Arizona Cardinals in Sunday’s season opener. The Chiefs are trying to make the AFC title game for a fifth straight season while the Cardinals want to get back to the playoffs for a second straight year.

Mahomes played three years for Kingsbury at Texas Tech, growing into an NFL-caliber quarterback. Now in his sixth season with Kansas City, he has already won an MVP and a Super Bowl.

While Kingsbury certainly boosted Mahomes’ football career, the same could be said in reverse. Kingsbury’s work with Mahomes helped the coach earn a reputation for being good with young quarterbacks, which is a big reason he was hired to take over the Cardinals and work with then-rookie quarterback Kyler Murray.

Murray isn’t as accomplished as Mahomes, but he’s still a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Kingsbury said the two aren’t exactly alike, but they do share some traits that make them good quarterbacks.

“The ability to play off-schedule,” Kingsbury said. “Pat’s not as fast, but he’s a little bit bigger, where Kyler is more quick-twitch and can really leave people when he takes off. I think the baseball background with the arm angles, being able to get the snap quick and getting it out in a quick release definitely plays into it for both of him.”

The Cardinals are trying to get off to a fast start for a second straight season. They started last year by winning seven straight and improved to 10-2 before fading down the stretch.

The Chiefs definitely provide a difficult test.

“When you got a guy like (Mahomes) across the field, you’ve got to be ready,” Murray said. “You’ve got to be ready to go. There’s going to be a lot of hype around the game. You get the prime-time spot, so I get it all, but at the end of the day we’ve got to execute, that’s all that matters.”

The Chiefs have nine of their 10 draft picks on the 53-man roster, with the other player on their practice squad. Most are expected to play key roles this season, including first-round picks Trent McDuffie at cornerback and George Karlaftis at defensive end, both of whom could start Sunday.

WR Skyy Moore, a second-round choice, is expected to help replace the offense that departed when Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins.

It’s the Arizona debut for receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who was acquired by the Cardinals in a draft day deal back in April.

Brown was a 1,000-yard receiver last season for the Baltimore Ravens. His production will be needed, especially during the season’s first six games, because three-time All Pro DeAndre Hopkins will be out after his suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Brown and Murray played together at Oklahoma.

Hill set a slew of records during his time with Kansas City, and the Chiefs intend to replace his production with a committee approach.

Along with Moore, the Chiefs added former Steelers standout JuJu Smith-Schuster and ex-Packers wide receiver Marques-Valdez Scantling in free agency. They join Mecole Hardman, the top returning wide receiver, and tight end Travis Kelce, who remains one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the game.

The Cardinals will debut their new-look defense against the Chiefs, elevating several young players into more prominent roles. All eyes will be on linebackers Isaiah Simmons and Zaven Collins, who were taken with back-to-back first-round picks in 2020 and ’21.

Both have had good moments during their short careers, but will now be asked to take on more prominent roles. Simmons will have play-calling responsibilities, relaying information from defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

Since coming to the NFL, Kingsbury and Mahomes have never lost in Week 1.

Kingsbury’s Cardinals have a 2-0-1 record since his arrival before the 2019 season. The Chiefs have won all four of the season openers Mahomes has started dating to 2018.

PRATT – The 17th-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team racked up 12 team blocks and nine service aces as the Blue Dragons rolled to a Jayhawk West sweep of the Pratt Beavers on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons won their 25th consecutive match over the Beavers with a 25-15, 25-11, 25-12 victory at the Beaver Done.

The Blue Dragons improve to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson travels to Sterling, Colorado for four matches, three against nationally ranked teams, in the NJC Classic.

Freshman outside hitter Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with nine kills.

Freshman middle Anna Dean had six kills and a team-high five block assists.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno finished with five kills and sophomore Baylee Miller had four kills.

Running a 5-1 offense, freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani finished with a season-high 29 assists.

Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey finished with team highs of eight digs and three service aces.

Freshman Perine Blanc finished with seven digs. Briseno and sophomore Sophie Connor had two aces each.

Two quick kills each from Briseno and Golden gave the Blue Dragons an early 7-3 lead in the first set. Leading 22-15, Golden had another kill and Dean added an ace in a 4-0 run to close the set at 25-15.

The Dragons opened the second set on a 5-1 run, but Pratt rallied to tie the set at 7-7. The Dragons scored five in a row, which was capped by a Blondie Penaflor/Connor double block. A Harvey service ace made it 15-9. The Dragons then scored nine unanswered points to build a 23-9 lead. Hutch had a stuff block on set point, a 25-11 win.

VB: Dragons sweep Pratt Wednesday

For the second time in her career, Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona was named the NJCAA Division I National Goalkeeper of the Week.

The sophomore from Wichita played a pivotal role in Hutchinson’s Jayhawk Conference-opening 3-1 victory over Kansas City on the road one week ago.

After giving up an early goal, Felix-Cardona shut down the high-scoring Blue Devils. She had four saves overall, three coming in the second half, a half in which the Blue Dragons dominated possession and extended a one-goal halftime lead.

Heading into Wednesday’s KJCCC match at Garden City, Felix-Cardona is 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .727 save percentage.

Last season, Felix-Cardona earned national keeper of the week honors with a six-save shutout against Western Wyoming in her Blue Dragon debut.

Felix-Cardona has been named the Jayhawk Conference Goalkeeper of the Week three times in her career, the third coming on Tuesday.

GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson Community College Women’s Soccer Team earned its second-straight shutout and had three multi-point scorers as the Blue Dragons improved to 5-0 on Wednesday night with a victory over the Garden City Broncbusters.

Freshman Adriana Delgado and sophomore Hadlie Lowe scored two goals each and sophomore midfielder Julia DeSouza had a career-high four points as the Blue Dragons defeated Garden City 5-0 in a Jayhawk West matchup at Broncbuster Stadium.

The Blue Dragons improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk West. This is Hutchinson’s first 5-0 start to a season since 2017. Garden City dropped to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Hutchinson also improves to 29-0 all-time against Garden City, including 23-0 in KJCCC-designated contests. The Dragons have 21 all-time shutouts against the Broncbusters.

Lowe led the Blue Dragons with a five-point night, tallying two goals with her first assist of the season. She was also credited with the game-winning goal, her second of the season.

Now with seven goals for the season, Lowe has 25 career goals 54 career points and 10 career game-winning goals. She moved into 12th place on the Blue Dragon career goals list, 20th on the career points list and is second in career game-winning girls. This was Lowe’s sixth career multi-goal game.

Delgado’s multi-goal night was her first of her Blue Dragon career. She scored her second and third goals of the season.

De Souza scored a goal and dished out a career single-game high two assists.

The Blue Dragons out-shot Garden City 13-7 overall and 7-1 in shots on goal.

Blue Dragon sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona (3-0) posted her fourth career shutout making only one save. Earlier on Wednesday, Felix-Cardona was named the NJCAA national goalkeeper of the week. Her one save against the Broncbusters was impressive when she had to leap high to deflect a Garden City shot over the crossbar in the 85th minute.

The Blue Dragons led 1-0 at halftime on Lowe’s goal in the 31st minute. Lowe took a long Zara Lawless pass and found an odd angle on the left side of the goal, turned in and chipped a shot for her sixth goal of the season.

Four minutes into the second half, the Blue Dragons struck again off a corner kick from De Souza where Delgado fired in a shot inside the box to extend the lead to 2-0.

De Souza scored with a 20-yard shot for her first goal of the season to make it 3-0. The goal was assisted by freshman Lorena Gomes in the 68th minute.

Delgado scored her second goal of the game minutes later in the 74th from a Lowe assist.

De Souza assisted on Lowe’s breakaway and second goal in the 82nd minute.

The Cardinals have won five of their last six games and have won 19 of their last 22 at Busch Stadium. Brendan Donovan also homered for the Cardinals. Nationals starter Paolo Espino gave up three runs in five innings as Washington’s three-game winning streak was snapped.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Matt Olson hit a three-run homer against his former club and the Atlanta Braves won their sixth in a row, outslugging the Oakland Athletics 10-9 and finally catching the slumping Mets atop the NL East. The reigning World Series champion Braves pulled even with a New York team that had held sole possession of the division lead for 147 days since April 12 but has lost three straight.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joey Gallo blasted a go-ahead, three-run homer in the second inning and Max Muncy added a pair of solo shots in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. The NL West leaders reduced their magic number to six while improving to 11-4 against the Giants this season. Tyler Anderson won his 14th game for Los Angeles. The Giants' four-game winning streak ended. San Francisco got homers from Lewis Brinson and Brandon Crawford. All of the game's runs came on homers.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Major League Baseball Players Association is asking MLB management to voluntarily accept the union as the bargaining agent for minor leaguers. The union's deputy executive director sent a letter to MLB claiming a majority of minor leaguers signed authorization cards. The MLBPA launched the minor league unionization drive on Aug. 28. Players with minor league contracts earn as little as $400 weekly during the six-month season. They would become their own bargaining unit within the MLBPA.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid is scheduled to enter a guilty plea to felony driving while intoxicated related to a car crash that seriously injured a young girl. Jackson County Circuit Court online records show Reid, the son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, is scheduled to plead guilty on Monday. He was set to go to trial Sept. 26. Reid was charged after police said he was speeding and intoxicated when he hit two stopped cars on an entrance ramp near Arrowhead Stadium in February 2021. A girl in one of the cars, Ariel Young, suffered a traumatic brain injury. Reid faces up to seven years in prison.

Wichita,&nbsp;KS-&nbsp;The Wind Surge kicked off their final homestand at Riverfront Stadium with a 5-1 loss to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals as the Surge finished two for eleven with runners in scoring position to drop the series opener Tuesday.

Cody Laweryson got the nod on the hill for the Surge and pitched four scoreless innings and tallied five strikeouts with only two hits and one walk allowed before being relieved by Michael Boyle in the fifth inning.

Anthony Veneziano got the start on the mound for Northwest Arkansas and pitched six innings, allowing zero runs, six hits, and one walk to earn the no-decision. Jonah Dipoto came in relief in the seventh inning.

The Naturals broke the tie in the top of the eighth inning behind a two-run homer from Tyler Gentry to give Northwest Arkansas a late 2-0 advantage. Gentry finished two for five with five RBIs in the game.

The Surge got on the board in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded single from Yunior Severino to cut the deficit in half 2-1. Severino finished the game one for four with an RBI.

The Naturals busted the game open in the ninth inning as they scored three insurance runs from a base-clearing RBI double from Gentry to take a 5-1 lead.

Bieber strong as Guardians beat Royals Tuesday

A pair of Hutchinson Community College football players earned Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week honors in Week No. 2 after the Blue Dragons rolled to a 63-point victory on Saturday at Ellsworth.

Freshman running back Rontavious Richmond was named the KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week. Redshirt freshman return specialist Darby Roper was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week after the No. 3 Blue Dragons defeated Ellsworth 70-7 on Saturday at Cadet Field in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Richmond and Roper are the second and third Blue Dragon players to earn weekly conference honors this season. Last week, quarterback Dylan Laible was named the Offensive Player of the Week.

RONTAVIOUS RICHMOND – Offensive Player of the Week

Richmond accounted for three touchdowns – two rushing, one receiving – to pace Blue Dragons offensively at Ellsworth.

Richmond had only eight carries but went for 158 yards, scoring rushing touchdowns of 64 and 75 yards. Richmond also had two receptions, including a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Dragons a 14-0 lead.

Richmond was the leading rusher for Hutchinson, which had 317 total rushing yards against Ellsworth.

DARBY ROPER – Defensive Player of the Week

The redshirt freshman from Haven started the Blue Dragons scoring on Saturday with his first career touchdown.

Roper took a short punt out of the end zone and returned it 32 yards for the Blue Dragons’ opening score.

Roper had five punt returns for an average of 9.8 yards per return against the Panthers.

Roper’s punt return for a touchdown was the first by a Blue Dragon since Markies Colvin in 2018.

After a strong effort in the 2022 Jayhawk Conference opener last week, Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer sophomore goalkeeper Oliva Felix-Cardona was named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday.

In her only action of the week, Felix-Cardona, a sophomore from Wichita, made three big second-half saves and help the Blue Dragons to a 3-1 Jayhawk Conference-opening victory at Kansas City.

After giving up an early goal, Felix-Cardona shut down the high-scoring Blue Devils. She had four saves overall, three coming in the second half, a half in which the Blue Dragons dominated possession.

For the season, Felix-Cardona is 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .727 save percentage.

This is the second time Felix-Cardona won the conference Goalkeeper of the Week award. She also won the award in Week 1 of the 2021 season.

The Blue Dragons travel to Garden City on Wednesday and plays host to Neosho County at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

WSOC: Felix-Cardona is Goalkeeper of the Week

After two dominant victories, the Hutchinson Community College Football team is now tied for No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division I Football Rankings, which were released on Tuesday, a day later than normal because of the Labor Day holiday.

The Blue Dragons (2-0) are tied with Iowa Western (1-0) for second in the rankings as New Mexico Military maintained the No. 1 spot after an impressive victory over previous No. 5 Snow College. The Blue Dragons earned two first-place votes, while the Broncos garnered the other eight votes.

Hutchinson, which was No. 3 last week, rolled over Ellsworth 70-7 on Saturday in the Dragons’ first road game of the season. Iowa Western was off on Saturday.

Now the Blue Dragons get a Top 10 matchup in Week 3 as No. 7 Iowa Central comes to Gowans Stadium on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. This will be the second nationally ranked home matchup the Blue Dragons have had this season. The Dragons defeated then-No. 13 Navarro 42-0 on August 27.

Northwest Mississippi and East Mississippi are fourth and fifth, respectively, in the NJCAA Rankings.

The Blue Dragons are the top team of three Jayhawk Conference teams ranked this week. Butler (2-0) is up to No. 8. The Grizzlies play host to No. 10 Snow College on Saturday in El Dorado. Coffeyville (2-0) is No. 11 this week. The Red Ravens play Independence on Saturday. Independence is receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in seven-consecutive polls dating back to last season.

The Blue Dragons earned two first-place votes, while the Broncos garnered the other eight votes.Hutchinson, which was No. 3 last week, rolled over Ellsworth 70-7 on Saturday in the Dragons’ first road game of the season. FB: Dragons No. 2 in latest poll

After a 2-1 week last week, the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team dropped four spots in the latest NJCAA Division I Volleyball Rankings, which were released on Tuesday instead of Monday became of the Labor Day holiday.

The Blue Dragons had their 10-match winning streak snapped last Wednesday in a four-set Jayhawk West loss to No. 16 Seward County. Hutchinson then swept Cloud County and the Friends University JV on Friday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson is now No. 17 in the national rankings with a 12-3 record.

The Blue Dragons have five matches this week with a conference road trip to Pratt on Wednesday and four matches in the NJC Classic on Friday and Saturday in Sterling, Colorado. Hutchinson will play Casper College, No. 5 Western Nebraska, No. 4 Indian Hills and No. 19 Northeastern Junior College.

The Blue Dragons own a victory over Casper and lost to Indian Hills in five sets earlier this season.

Seward County moved up to No. 15 and is the highest-ranked Jayhawk West team in the rankings. Butler is receiving votes.

Florida SouthWestern garnered all eight first-place votes and remained No. 1 this week. Snow College moved up to second. New Mexico Military, Indian Hills and Western Nebraska round out the top five teams in the rankings.

Last week, the Blue Dragons jumped into the national rankings for the first time since 2018.

Hutchinson then swept Cloud County and the Friends University JV on Friday at the Sports Arena.Hutchinson is now No. 17 in the national rankings with a 12-3 record.The Blue Dragons have five matches this week with a conference road trip to Pratt on Wednesday and four matches in the NJC Classic on Friday and Saturday in Sterling, Colorado. Hutchinson will play Casper College, No. 5 Western Nebraska, No. 4 Indian Hills and No. 19 Northeastern Junior College.The Blue Dragons own a victory over Casper and lost to Indian Hills in five sets earlier this season.Seward County moved up to No. 15 and is the highest-ranked Jayhawk West team in the rankings. Butler is receiving votes.Florida SouthWestern garnered all eight first-place votes and remained No. 1 this week. Snow College moved up to second. LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Following a 56-10 season-opening victory, Kansas will begin Big 12 play on Saturday, September 10 when the Jayhawks travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers at Milan Puskar Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+ with Courtney Lyle (Play-by-Play), Forrest Conoly (Analyst) and Tori Petry (Sideline) on the call.

The matchup between the Jayhawks and the Mountaineers is the first of any Big 12 game this season. Kansas and West Virginia last faced on November 27, 2021, when the Mountaineers narrowly edged Kansas 34-28 to end the 2021 season. Saturday’s matchup will be a rare back-to-back conference game between the two schools.

Kansas opened its season with a 56-10 win over Tennessee Tech on Friday, Sept. 2, while West Virginia fell to No. 17 Pitt, 38-31. Kansas’ 56 points scored were the most in a season opener since 1912 and the most at home since scoring 76 against Nebraska in 2007. Defensively, Kansas recorded five sacks – its most in a season opener since 2004 – and held Tennessee Tech to 4-of-17 on third downs. The Jayhawks didn’t punt in the win, while forcing seven punts from the Golden Eagles.

Kansas posted 502 yards in 49 plays in its season-opening win, averaging 10.2 yards per play, which were the most by a KU team since at least 1995. Since 1996, the previous high for yards per play by a Kansas team was 8.6, which came on Oct. 11, 2003 at Colorado.

Defensively, Kansas held Tennessee Tech to 97 passing yards and 190 total yards of offense. The last time the Jayhawk defense kept an opponent under 100 yards of passing and under 200 yards of total offense came on Sept. 4, 2010 against North Dakota State.

West Virginia accounted for 404 yards of offense in the 38-31 loss to Pitt on Sept. 1, including 190 yards that came on the ground. The Mountaineers averaged 5.5 yards per play while allowing 384 yards of total offense to the Panthers.

Saturday’s meeting between Kansas and West Virginia will be the 12th&nbsp;in the series history, including the seventh in Morgantown.

Following Saturday’s Big 12 opener, Kansas will travel to Houston to take on the Houston Cougars at TDECU Stadium on Sept. 17. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT on ESPNU. The Jayhawks will then return home to take on Duke on Sept. 24 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

Manhattan, Kan. —&nbsp;K-State welcomes a familiar foe to Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday as long-time Big 8 and Big 12 member Missouri visits Manhattan for an 11 a.m., ESPN2-televised showdown. It is the first time the two teams have squared off since the 2011 season as the Collin Klein-led Wildcats held off the Tigers, 24-17, in Manhattan. A sellout crowd has been announced for Saturday’s game.

Coming off a Consensus All-America season, running back Deuce Vaughn picked up right where he left off in the 2022 opener, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown against South Dakota. It was his seventh-straight game with more than 100 rushing yards, which ranks second in school history to Darren Sproles, who had a 10-game streak spanning over the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

A transfer from Nebraska, Adrian Martinez earned the start at quarterback for the Wildcats last week as he became the first signal caller to start a season opener after transferring from a Division I school since Matt Miller (Texas A&amp;M) started the 1994 opener. However, he is the first ever to come straight from one Division I school and start the next year’s season opener as Miller redshirted the 1993 season.

With seven returning starters on defense a year ago, the Wildcats returned to form against South Dakota as they pitched a shutout, their first since the 2019 Bowling Green game. It was one of just nine shutouts nationally during the opening weekend of the season and the only one in the Big 12. South Dakota only converted on 5-of-16 third down attempts, while the Coyotes were 0-of-4 on fourth down.

Known for its special teams prowess, K-State brings back both of its primary returners in Malik Knowles (kickoffs) and Phillip Brooks (punts), each of whom have garnered All-America status in their disciplines during their careers. However, it was a blocked punt by Seth Porter and a 17-yard return for a score by Desmond Purnell that got the Wildcats their first special teams touchdown of the season.
