(AP) — Lance Leipold has signed his lucrative contract extension at Kansas, which includes a massive pay raise for the Jayhawks' football coach along with his assistants and staff, and could keep him tied to the school through the 2029 season. Under terms of the contract, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, Leipold will make $5 million in the first year of the deal with annual $100,000 increases. That averages out to $5.3 million and tops out at $5.6 million in the final year. Leipold gets a $750,000 signing bonus while his buyout rises to $12.5 million. Sports Headlines for Wednesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Matt Rhule said he had plenty of options after he got fired by the Carolina Panthers. He could have taken a year off from football or worked in television.

Or he could jump back into college coaching. A number of schools reached out to him, he said, but only one appealed to him and his family.

Nebraska introduced Rhule as its coach on Monday, exactly seven weeks after the Panthers fired him five games into his third season. Awaiting him is the daunting task of taking over a team coming off a sixth straight losing season and a program that's a shell of what once was one of the biggest brands in the college game.

“I am here because this is the right fit, it’s the right time,” Rhule said. “And if I have one message for you: We can absolutely do it. We can absolutely get University of Nebraska football exactly where it’s supposed to be. It will be hard. It may take time, but it will be done.”

Rhule signed an eight-year, $74 million contract that makes him the third highest-paid coach in the Big Ten behind Ohio State's Ryan Day and Michigan State's Mel Tucker and among the top 10 nationally.

Athletic director Trev Alberts said the contract is 90% guaranteed and that some of the compensation is deferred. Rhule will have a pool of $7 million to spend on assistant coaches.

When the Panthers fired Rhule, he was still owed $34 million on his seven-year contract. Alberts said the Panthers were involved in Rhule's negotiations with Nebraska.

“Structuring a business arrangement that everybody was willing to sign off on was a bit of a challenge,” Alberts said, “and there were some fits and starts to it."

Alberts said there was a period when it looked like the deal would fall through, but the sides reached an agreement on Thanksgiving morning.

Rhule's starting salary is $5.5 million and rises by at least $1 million each year, topping out at $12.5 million if he's still coach in 2030. Asked if he thought he would need to spend an average of $9 million per year on a football coach, Alberts said the salary scale is rising in the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference because of dramatically increasing revenues tied to record-setting television rights deals.

“Let's be honest, there's a Power Two now,” Alberts said. “Certainly not to denigrate any of the other conferences, but that's kind of where we're heading. ... If we're going to be serious about having Nebraska football competing at the upper level of the Big Ten Conference, there's going to be resources needed to acquire that talent.”

Rhule, who was 11-27 in two-plus seasons with the Panthers, was hired because of the success he had in his two college head coaching jobs.

He had Temple playing for and winning the American Athletic Conference championship in his third and fourth seasons (2015-16). He had Baylor playing for the Big 12 championship in his third season (2019) after taking over a Bears program emerging from the sexual assault scandal under Art Briles.

Rhule emphasized toughness in practices and games and said the only way to win games is to win the line of scrimmage. The Huskers have notably struggled on the offensive and defensive lines.

Rhule, who grew up in New York City as a Penn State fan, was a walk-on linebacker for the Nittany Lions. He said he attended the Huskers' 44-6 Kickoff Classic win over Penn State in 1983 and was heartbroken when Nebraska beat out the unbeaten Nittany Lions for the 1994 national title.

Rhule said he respected the physical brand of football the Huskers played back then and that he wants to bring it back.

About 750 boosters and former players turned out at the Hawks Championship Center for a welcome event and news conference. Among them were Gov.-elect Jim Pillen, a Republican who played defensive back for the Huskers in the 1970s, and 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers. The band played and fireworks went off next to the podium as Rhule and Alberts entered the building.

Rhule, 47, is the sixth coach to lead the program since College Football Hall of Famer Tom Osborne won or shared three national championships in four years before retiring after the 1997 season.

The Huskers' most recent conference championship came in 1999 under Osborne's successor, Frank Solich. Bill Callahan, Bo Pelini and Mike Riley followed before the program bottomed out under Scott Frost, who was 16-31 in four-plus seasons and never finished higher than fifth in the Big Ten West.

Rhule's arrival came three days after the Huskers closed a 4-8 season under Mickey Joseph — named interim coach after Frost's firing Sept. 11 — and just a few months before the opening of Nebraska's $165 million football facility.

“There’s not a game that I expect to ever walk into where we don’t expect to win,” Rhule said. “It is not a burden but a responsibility on me as the coach to know that there will be people from all across the state who take the money that they’ve made with their hands and with their work and their daily toil — and they spend it to come watch our team play. You can’t win every game every year, but you can certainly be a team that people are proud to watch.”

Hutchinson Community College women's soccer sophomore forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/lowe_hadlie_mqp8">Hadlie Lowe</a>&nbsp;was named NJCAA 2nd-Team All-American on Tuesday.

The back-to-back Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player becomes the 14th player in team history to earn All-America honors and the first since Esther Karhayu was named to the second team in 2020/21.

Lowe, a sophomore from Wichita (Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School), was the top scoring option for the Blue Dragons and posted career highs 20 goals, seven assists and 47 points. She had six game-winning goals this season. Her goal, assist and point totals all exceeded her stellar freshman year numbers.

Lowe ranked fourth in the NJCAA in game-winning goals, eighth in goals scored and ninth in points scored.

Lowe had the first of her three hat tricks this season in the opener against Western Nebraska on August 26. She then scored a career single-game high four goals against Dodge City on Oct. 8 and followed that with three goals against Cowley in a 3-1 victory.

After the four-goal game against Dodge City, Lowe was named the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week. Lowe also earned two KJCCC Player of the Week honors in 2022.

Lowe had the game-winner in a 4-3 victory over Johnson County in the Region VI opening-round win over Johnson County.

Lowe is the 13th Blue Dragon to register a 20-goal season, the first since Jordan Downing and Jazmin Hartshorn both did so in 2016.

Lowe's 38 career goals tie Jenny Yukich (2006-07) and Danielle Sheehy (2012) for sixth-most in program history. Her 85 career points tie her with Pearl Slattery (2010-12) for 10th place. Lowe's 14 career game-winning goals ties a school record with Melissa Hetherington.

As a freshman, Lowe led the nation with eight-game winning goals.

Lowe is just the second Blue Dragon ever to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons, joining Alicia Robinson (2010, 2011). This is the eighth time a Blue Dragon player has been named Offensive player of the Year.

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Christian Pulisic scored while crashing headfirst into the goalkeeper in the 38th minute and the United States advanced to the knockout round of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Iran on Tuesday in a politically charged rematch of their famous meeting a quarter-century ago.

Pulisic sprawled on the field and was lying in the goal for about three minutes as he received treatment from the U.S. staff. He reentered the game but was replaced at the start of the second half.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the U.S. opened with draws against Wales and England and needed a victory to move on to the round of 16.

The Americans finished second in Group B with five points, two behind England, and will play the Netherlands on Saturday with the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

“I always say it’s us against the world,” forward Tim Weah said. “No one believed the U.S. could play good football.”

Iran finished third with three points. The team has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearances.

There was heightened tension surrounding the match because of the strained relations between the United States and Iran’s Islamic government. Iran had famously upset the U.S. 2-1 in the 1998 tournament in France, eliminating the Americans.

Pregame protocols were normal, unlike the 1998 game, when Iranians presented the Americans with white flowers and the teams posed for a joint photo.

Raucous Iranian fans with horns and drums in the crowd of 42,127 filled the lower bowl behind one goal at Al Thumama Stadium and were far louder than the red-white-and-blue U.S. supporters at the other end and behind the American bench.

The U.S. outshot Iran 9-0 in the first half but didn’t break through until Pulisic came up with the big moment that a growing and increasingly demanding fan base back home had been pining for.

Weston McKennie lofted a pass from just past the center circle to Sergiño Dest at the edge of the 6-yard box. Dest headed the ball in front of the net on a bounce as Pulisic charged up the center of the field past Ramin Rezaeian and Majid Hosseiniand.

Turning his body to let the ball hit his right foot, Pulisic knocked the ball for his 22nd international goal and first in World Cup play. His momemtum carried him into goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, and Pulisic needed to be helped to his feet before going back in.

“Obviously we’re very thankful that he threw his body there,” McKennie said. “At the end it was a heart-drop sinking moment, but we got it done and we’re excited to still be here.”

Weah, who scored the Americans’ goal in the opening 1-1 draw with Wales, nearly doubled the lead in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time but was ruled offside.

It is the first top ranking for the Cougars since Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon had Houston there in the final poll of the 1982-83 season. They received 45 of 63 first-place votes from a national media panel. Texas climbed to No. 2 with Virginia, Arizona and Purdue rounding out the top five. These Horned Frogs have the first undefeated regular season by a Big 12 team since Texas in 2009 after a 62-14 victory. They play in the Big 12 championship game next Saturday against No. 13 Kansas State. The league didn't have a title game in 2014, when TCU lost once. The Frogs beat K-State 38-28 in mid-October.

With the Astros, he replaces free agent Yuli Gurriel at first base in a batting order that also features All-Star sluggers Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. Sports Headlines for Tuesday

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The&nbsp;Boston Red Sox announced today that Kansas City Royals pitcher&nbsp;Jose Cuas&nbsp;has been named the 2022&nbsp;Tony Conigliaro&nbsp;Award winner.

The Red Sox have recognized a Tony Conigliaro Award winner for every year since 1990 in memory of the former Red Sox outfielder, whose career was tragically shortened by a beanball in 1967 and whose life ended in 1990 at the age of 45. It is awarded to a “Major Leaguer who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination, and courage that were trademarks of Tony C.”

Voting was conducted by a 14-person committee comprised of media members, Major League Baseball executives, Red Sox officials, and Conigliaro’s brother, Rich.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award,” Cuas said. “This accomplishment is a significant milestone in my life. To see my name mentioned next to Tony Conigliaro is truly a blessing.”

Cuas, 28, made his Major League debut with Kansas City in 2022 and went 4-2 with a 3.58 ERA (15 ER in 37.2 IP) in 47 appearances. He was selected as an infielder by Milwaukee in the 11th&nbsp;round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft but was released in 2018, shortly after making the transition to pitcher. He signed in 2019 with Arizona but was released again in 2020. In June 2021, Kansas City extended a minor league contract to Cuas, who was pitching for the Long Island Ducks of the Independent Atlantic League and working as a driver for FedEx.

Cuas tied for 4th&nbsp;among Royals in appearances in his 2022 debut season, despite not making his debut until May 31. He specialized in escaping tough jams and stranded 30 of the 38 runners he inherited for a 78.9% strand rate, which ranked 7th&nbsp;in the Majors among pitchers who inherited at least 35 runners.

Cuas is the second Royal to win the Tony Conigliaro Award, following pitcher&nbsp;Jim Eisenreich, who battled Tourette syndrome before earning the inaugural Tony Conigliaro Award in 1990.

A native of Swampscott, Mass., Tony Conigliaro hit a home run in his first at-bat at Fenway Park in 1964 at only 19 years old. A year later, he became the youngest player to lead his league in home runs when he hit 32 in 1965. He also became the youngest American League player to reach 100 home runs when he hit No. 100 at 22 years and 197 days old. Conigliaro’s early promise of greatness went unfulfilled after he was struck in the face by a pitch on Aug. 18, 1967. The pitch fractured his left cheekbone, dislocated his jaw, and severely damaged the retina in his left eye. He missed all of the 1968 season, but returned to play two more years in Boston, hitting a career-high 36 home runs for the Sox in 1970, when he also drove in 116 runs. He was traded after the season to the Angels, but declining vision led him to announce his retirement in 1971. Conigliaro suffered a massive heart attack in 1982 and died eight years later at the age of 45.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are signing two-time Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon to their practice squad, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press, adding some much-needed depth with a player that was recently released from the AFC West rival Denver Broncos.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the signing was not yet official.

Gordon was cut by the Broncos last week amid fumble problems that plagued the 2015 first-round pick during his time in Denver. While he ran for 318 yards and caught 25 passes for 223 yards in 10 starts, averaging 3.5 yards per carry, Gordon also fumbled five times in 10 games, including a costly one in a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The fumble issues are not new. Gordon has lost the ball 26 times in 108 games, or about once in every four games.

The Chiefs were the perfect landing spot for him for a couple of reasons.

First, they still have to play the Broncos twice in their final six games, when they are trying to maintain their grasp on the AFC's top seed and lone playoff bye.

Whatever information Gordon can provide on new coach Nathaniel Hackett's system, and the rest of the struggling Broncos, will only help them down the stretch.

Second, the Chiefs were in need of some depth at running back with Clyde Edwards-Helaire out with a high ankle sprain.

Seventh-round draft pick Isiah Pacheco had already surpassed Edwards-Helaire on the depth chart before the 2020 first-round pick landed on injured reserve. The Chiefs also have Jerick McKinnon, who is more threatening as a receiver than on the ground, and Ronald Jones II, who was active for the first time this season in Sunday's 26-10 win over the Rams.

Pacheco carried 22 times for 69 yards and a touchdown against the Rams. Jones had four carries for 12 yards.

"I think he ran hard. I think he had a lot of energy going," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Jones on Monday. "Everything was fast to him, but he was productive. He had some good, strong runs. He caught the ball well when he had the opportunity to do that, and had a big game there. I thought for the first time coming in he did well."

Now he'll be pushed for playing time by Gordon, who will start off on the practice squad while he learns enough of the offense to contribute on game day.

That's unlikely to happen in time to face the Bengals on Sunday in Cincinnati, but it could be in time for their next game against — you guessed it — the Broncos in primetime on Dec. 11 in Denver.

Pittsburgh's eighth straight win in this lopsided series allowed the Steelers to match San Francisco for the most Monday night victories in league history (52). The 49ers had edged in front last week when they beat Arizona in Mexico City.

Matt Ryan drove the Colts (4-7-1) into position to score, but Indy let a minute run off the clock in a span of three plays in Steelers territory, finally using its first timeout on fourth down with 30 seconds remaining. Ryan then threw incomplete to Parris Campbell on fourth-and-3 from the Steelers 26 and Indy fell to 1-2 under interim coach Jeff Saturday.

"I thought we had plenty of time," said Saturday, who never coached at the pro or college level before owner Jim Irsay hired him to replace Frank Reich. "We had plenty of timeouts, so I wasn't too concerned. This wasn't a press for time, we just didn't make enough plays."

It was the Colts' first home Monday night game since September 2015 and the first half was a complete dud.

Pittsburgh drove into Indy territory on all five possessions and produced three field goals and Harris' 6-yard TD run to take a 16-3 lead. Colts players jogged to the locker room to a chorus of boos.

But when rookie Dallis Flowers returned the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards, the atmosphere changed.

Four plays later, Jonathan Taylor scored on a 2-yard run to cut the deficit to 16-10. The Colts drove to the Steelers 1-yard line on their next possession, but Ryan and Taylor botched a handoff and Pittsburgh recovered.

Indy then forced a three-and-out and Ryan threw a 6-yard TD pass to Michael Pittman to give the Colts a 17-16 lead late in the third quarter.

It didn't last long. Snell, who played in college at nearby Kentucky, answered with the short TD run.

"He has an edge, he runs angry," said Pickett, Pittsburgh's rookie QB who finished 20 of 28 for 174 yards and no turnovers. "I love the juice he brings. He's a detailed guy who does his job very well."

Tomlin said he was uncertain about Harris' diagnosis. Harris had 10 carries for 35 yards before departing. Cornerback Levi Wallace also left the game late with an undisclosed injury.

"We respect any decisions made around medical, but I don't know where the decision came from," Tomlin said about Wallace's departure.

Indy lost Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II with an injured shin. His replacement, Tony Brown, was defending Pickens on the 2-point conversion.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) —&nbsp;Jalen Wilson hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points, MJ Rice added 19 and No. 9 Kansas bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 87-55 rout of Texas Southern on Monday night.

“Just coming in and doing my job, really, whether that’s bringing energy or playing defense,” Rice said afterward. “I know I missed some time but it’s also kind of like a build-up. I have to get that rhythm back.”

Gradey Dick had 15 points, Joseph Yesufu 14 and KJ Adams Jr. 10 for the Jayhawks (7-1), who fell to No. 13 Tennessee in the title game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. They improved to 109-16 after a loss under coach Bill Self.

“I thought it was probably pretty good overall,” Self said, “considering we were tired, and we hadn’t practiced since we played Tennessee. I thought that was about as good as we could do.”

Davon Barnes had 22 points and Zytarious Mortle scored 11 for the Tigers (1-7), whose tough nonconference schedule has taken them to Texas Tech, Houston and Auburn with a trip to Wichita State still to come.

The game was a rematch of a first-round NCAA Tournament game won by the Jayhawks on their way to the national championship last season. And for a stretch in the first half, the Tigers gave the champs all they could handle.

Texas Southern was still within 14-10 midway through the first half when Kansas ripped off a 15-2 run to seize control. But even during the spurt, the Jayhawks were unable to capitalize on turnovers and couldn’t salvage much of an advantage on the boards.

They even gave up a buzzer-beating 3 that got the preseason SWAC favorites within 40-25 at halftime.

“Defensively we were not very good early,” Self said, “and they missed a lot of layups.”

If there was any drama left, it evaporated in the opening minutes of the second half. Texas Southern turned it over four times in its first five possessions, Kansas ripped off a 14-2 run and Self eventually was able to empty his bench.

Texas Southern couldn’t overcome 16 turnovers and a poor night from the 3-point arc, where the Tigers were 4 of 17. They also got just six points off the bench, and their lack of depth was evident as they wore down in the second half.

Kansas was 13 of 29 from behind the arc, and many of the shots came off open looks courtesy of good ball movement. The Jayhawks had 23 assists on 30 made shots, including six assists from Wilson and nine from Dajuan Harris Jr.

Texas Southern returns home to face NAIA foe North American on Sunday.

The Tigers defeated Penn (156) and Southern Indiana (193) and own five other wins against teams ranked 200-or-higher.</li><li>This is the third in a four-game series that continues next year in Columbia. Mizzou won inside an empty CKA in 2021, but the Shockers evened the score with a&nbsp; 61-55 victory last November at Mizzou Arena.</li><li>Since the 2005-06 season, WSU is 14-7 against SEC opponents with victories in four of its last five.</li><li>Tuesday night's game is WSU's 300th in the 20 seasons since CKA's renovation. The Shockers lost the turnover battle 12-5 but outrebounded the Texans 40-29 and held them to 36.8%.</li><li>WSU created separation midway through the first half with a 7-0 run, fueled entirely by Okafor. He had four in Monday's win over Grand Canyon and two more on Tuesday against San Francisco.</li><li>The 6-foot-2 Porter begins the week as the American Athletic Conference leader in total blocks (13) and blocks-per-game (2.17). They scored on over 61 percent of their possessions.</li><li>WSU's 54% shooting day snapped a string of 47-straight games in which the team had failed to make more than half of its field goal attempts. The last came in a Jan. 2, 2021 win at Ole Miss when the Shockers made 52% from the field.</li><li>In parts of three seasons under Brown, WSU is 23-4 when outshooting its foe from the field and 22-5 when finishing with a higher three-point percentage.</li><li>The Shockers are also 23-1 when scoring at least 70 in regulation and a perfect 9-0 when they make it to 80.</li>

 <li>WSU has frustrated foes into some lengthy scoring funks. Over the first six games, opponents have had nine different scoring droughts of at least four minutes.</li><li>That includes scoreless stretches of 6:08 and 9:10 by GCU and 7:29 against San Francisco.</li><li>Tarleton was the first WSU opponent to avoid a spell of more than 4:00.</li>

 <li>Mizzou leads 4-1 all-time, helped by three home wins in the early 1950s.</li><li>After a nearly 70-year hiatus, the schools revived the series in 2020. This is the third in a four-game agreement that continues next year in Columbia.</li><li>The visiting team has taken each of the first two matchups. Mizzou won in an empty Charles Koch Arena in December, 2020. WSU retured the favor last November with a 61-55 win at Mizzou Arena.</li><li>The 2020 trip to Wichita wasn't the Tigers first appearance at the Roundhouse.  <li>Mizzou is in its first season under Dennis Gates, who completed a successful three-year turn around at Cleveland State by leading the Vikings to back-to-back Horizon League titles and bids the 2021 NCAA tournament the 2022 NIT.</li><li>Gate inherited a Mizzou squad with just one returning starter, coming off a 12-21 season (5-13 SEC), and has them out to a 7-0 start.</li><li>Tuesday night marks the first action for the Tigers outside of Mizzou arena and tips off a stretch that will see them play 16 of their next 17 games against KenPom top-100 opponents.</li><li>With their up-tempo attack, the Tigers rank among the national leaders in scoring offense (4th, 93.3 ppg), field goal percentage (4th, .526) assists (1st, 23.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1st, 1.94). Defensively, Mizzou leads the nation in steals (13.9) and turnover margin (+10.0) and ranks third in takeways (22.0).</li><li>Two of Gates' Cleveland State players followed him to Mizzou and have been difference-makers: Tre Gomillion has a nation-best 7.00 assist-to-turnover ratio and D'Moi Hodge leads the nation in total steals (24).</li><li>Hodge is also the team's top scorer at 16.6 points and has averaged 3.0 triples-per-game on 41.2% accuracy.</li><li>Kobe Brown – Mizzou's leading scorer in 2021-22 – averages 14.0 points and team-best 5.7 rebounds.</li>

 <li>Dennis Gates has never faced the Shockers as a head coach but was an assistant on the Nevada team that defeated WSU in the first round of the 2010 NIT. KU will head to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the seventh seeded Miami Hurricanes (19-10) in the first round. The match is set for Thursday, Dec. 1 at 4:30 p.m. CT in the Devaney Center.

Kansas ended the regular season 18-10 overall and 8-8 in Big 12 play. At 8-8, Kansas finished fifth in the 2022 Big 12 standings. Texas (15-1) won the league, followed by Baylor (12-4), TCU (11-5) and Iowa State (10-6).

The Jayhawks are headed to the tournament for the second consecutive season. In 2021, Kansas went to the Sweet 16 after defeating Creighton in 3-1 in Omaha, Nebraska in the second round. It was the first time since 2015 Kansas made a Sweet 16 appearance.
