WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State right-handed pitcher Clark Candiotti was selected to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. This is the third consecutive Honor Roll selection and the fourth overall for Candiotti, who was also honored on March 13, March 27, and April 3.
Candiotti was dominant in his first American Athletic Conference home start on Friday against Houston, setting a new career high with 11 strikeouts over a career best-tying 6.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander had a string of seven consecutive strikeouts from the fifth through the seventh, the longest recorded stretch of consecutive strikeouts in the Shocker record book. His biggest pitches came when Houston loaded the bases with one out in the fifth; Candiotti responded by fanning the three and four-hole hitters for the Cougars to escape the threat.
All told, Candiotti (4-2) allowed just three hits and two walks to go along with his 11 strikeouts. He exited with two on and two out in the seventh, after which Jace Miner escaped the jam by inducing a fly out to center. The Shockers went on to win the second game of the doubleheader, 6-1.
The junior right-hander has now won four of his last five starts, lowering his ERA in the process from 6.08 to 2.86, a mark that ranks 89th nationally. Candiotti has 54 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 44.0 innings pitched, a 4.91 strikeout-to-walk ratio that is 60th in the country. He has not walked more than two batters in any of his eight starts and has struck out seven or more in five straight outings.
Candiotti and the Shockers take their show on the road this week, battling Oklahoma on Tuesday night at 6:30 pm before a weekend series at Tulane running Friday-Sunday.
