After a tremendous opening weekend in which she led the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to wins over the Nos. 3 and 1 teams in the nation, Blue Dragon sophomore Baylee Miller was named the Jayhawk Conference’s first Division I Volleyball Player of the Week of the season on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons’ sophomore outside/right-side hitter from Wichita, Miller twice posted career highs for kills and helped the Blue Dragons upset No. 3 Missouri State University-West Plains and No. 1 Iowa Western both on Saturday at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

For the week in four matches and 17 sets, Miller hit .370 and had 3.35 kills per set.

Miller had a career-high of 14 kills and 14 digs in a five-set loss to No. 19 Indian Hills on Friday. Then on Saturday, Miller had career bests of 24 kills and .537 hitting percentage in leading the Blue Dragons to a victory over No. 3 West Plains.

A few hours later, Miller had 16 kills on .281 hitting in helping the Dragons earn a victory over an NJCAA Division I No. 1-ranked program for the first time in program history with a five-set win over top-ranked and defending national champion Iowa Western.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Christian Walker had three hits, including a run-scoring double, to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Walker’s two-out double highlighted a three-run eighth against Josh Staumont (3-3) to extend the Diamondbacks’ lead to 5-1.

“That’s what every team’s playing for to some extent, that hit with traffic on,” Walker said. “Everybody wants to come through and get that timely hit.”

Walker delivered after Manager Torey Lovullo turned him loose on a 3-0 count.

“He earned that right to get that 3-0 swing,” Lovullo said. “I just thought it was a crucial time in the game and right guy and the right situation.”

Arizona starter Zach Davies didn’t allow a baserunner until Bobby Witt Jr., hammered his 17th homer to left field with one out in the fourth.

“My command was a little bit off,” Davies said. “I got behind guys but was able to get back into counts and was able to get contact right at guys and use my defense a lot tonight. When I needed to be able to make a pitch I could.”

Lovullo said Davies was "just pounding the zone, front to back changing speeds with his changeup/fastball combination.”

Nicky Lopez and Witt tripled during a two-run eighth to cut Arizona’s lead to 5-3.

Royals starter Jonathan Heasley pitched out of trouble in each of the first four innings, allowing a hit and a walk in each frame. Heasley escaped damage when the Diamondbacks went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Heasley’s most uncomfortable moment came in the fourth as he paused twice to vomit behind the mound. He eventually had to leave the game when the problem recurred with two out in the fifth.

“It’s not a ‘sick’ issue,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He gets amped up and that’s something that’s happened to him multiple times throughout his life. He was completely unsurprised because it’s happened so often. It got to the point where I had to get him out. At some point we had to draw a line.”

Heasley's attempt to pitch through the problem impressed Lovullo.

“It certainly spoke volumes about his toughness,” Lovullo said. “You get one out away from potentially winning a baseball game and you’ve got to come out, it’s not very satisfying, but he threw the ball well.”

Arizona tied the game in the sixth on Geraldo Perdomo’s two-out hit off reliever José Cuas’ leg.

Jake McCarthy delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead.

Arizona scored all seven runs against three Kansas City relievers.

“We were patient,” Lovullo said. “We executed. The first several innings we were just giving away at-bats. We weren’t locked in the way we were later in the game.”

Alek Thomas had three hits and a walk as Arizona snapped a three-game losing streak.

Joe Mantiply (2-4) got four outs to earn the win.

The Royals were outhit 13-5 and have gone a franchise-record eight consecutive games without more than six hits. They have lost seven of nine.

Royals 1B Vinnie Pasquantino was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder discomfort.

Royals RHP Jonathan Heasley was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. RHP Collin Snider was optioned to Omaha, and C Sebastian Rivero was recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

The Diamondbacks claimed RHP Reyes Moronta off waivers from the Dodgers and designated IF Jake Hager for assignment.

Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen (9-2, 2.78 ERA) will face Royals RHP Brady Singer (6-4, 3.27) on Wednesday night.

Pujols led off the seventh with a drive to left-center for his seventh homer in his last 10 games and No. 14 overall in his final big league season. There was a noticeable round of cheers from the Wrigley Field crowd of 29,719 as the three-time NL MVP rounded the bases on his second hit of the night. That one run was all Montgomery needed. CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina has rejoined the St. Louis Cardinals after traveling to his native Puerto Rico for the end of his basketball team’s championship run. The 40-year-old Molina owns the Vaqueros de Bayamón, who play in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league. Bayamón beat San Germán 75-61 on Saturday to clinch its 16th BSN title. Molina was placed on the restricted list Saturday and missed the final two games of St. Louis’ weekend sweep in Arizona. The veteran catcher went 0 for 3 in the Cardinals’ 1-0 victory over the Cubs in the opener of a five-game series at Wrigley Field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones and wide receiver Mecole Hardman returned to practice with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, when they moved their training camp base from Missouri Western back to their own facility. Jones had been dealing with a back injury and Hardman had been out with a sore groin. Among those still missing practice were defensive end Carlos Dunlap with a sore Achilles tendon and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster with a sore knee.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says freshman Quinn Ewers was named the Longhorns' starting quarterback because he’s a talent who can “make all the throws.” In his first comments since naming Ewers the starter, Sarkisian praised him as a playmaker and natural passer in a complicated offense. Ewers transferred to Texas after sitting most of last season deep on the depth chart at Ohio State. He beat Hudson Card for the starting job with the Longhorns. Card started the first two games of 2021 but was benched for Casey Thompson in a 5-7 season. Thompson has since transferred to Nebraska.

UNDATED (AP) — Mississippi, Southern California, LSU and Nebraska were among the most active teams recruiting players from the transfer portal ahead of the college football season. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin sought experienced players who could fill immediate needs. USC’s Lincoln Riley and LSU’s Brian Kelly went in looking for star power as they attempt quick rebuilds. Nebraska’s Scott Frost is simply trying to save his job. The top-ranked portal class belongs to Riley at USC but Kiffin is right behind at No. 2.

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama stars Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. are among four players from the top-ranked Crimson Tide selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team. Alabama defensive backs Jordan Battle and Eli Ricks also made the first team. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia each had three players chosen to the first team. Ricks was one of seven players who have transferred during their careers to make either the first or second teams. That includes USC receiver Jordan Addison, who won the Biletnikoff Award last season at Pittsburgh.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady has returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ending what has been described as an 11-day, prearranged break from training camp for personal reasons. The seven-time Super Bowl champion didn’t address the media after practicing Monday. Teammates and coach Todd Bowles said the 45-year-old quarterback was sharp throwing the ball and essentially took up where he left off before leaving the team on Aug. 11. Brady missed two preseason games that Bowles said he wouldn't have played in even if he had been with the team. The coach said it hasn't been determined if Brady might play in this weekend's preseason finale at Indianapolis.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Baker Mayfield will start the Carolina Panthers’ Sept. 11 regular-season opener against his former team, the Cleveland Browns. Panthers coach Matt Rhule made the announcement on the team’s website Monday. Mayfield, acquired in a trade with the Browns earlier this offseason, beat out incumbent starter Sam Darnold for the job. Both quarterbacks are expected to play Friday night in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Gary Gaines, coach of the Texas high school football team made famous in the book and movie “Friday Night Lights,” has died. He was 73. Gaines’ family says the former coach died in Lubbock after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Gaines made many stops in West Texas during a 30-year coaching career. He was best known for a four-year stint leading the highly successful program at Odessa Permian. His 1988 team was chronicled in Buzz Bissinger’s bestselling book. It portrayed a program that favored football over academics but had a sympathetic view of Gaines.

Just a little more than 48 hours after completing a day of back-to-back victories over the Nos. 3 and 1 teams in the nation on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team opened the home season with three wins at the Blue Dragon Quad on Monday night.

The Blue Dragons improved their record to 5-2 with a pair of sweeps and a four-set victory at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson opened on Monday with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 victory over the Ottawa University JV. The Blue Dragons then dominated sets 2 and 3 against Neosho County in a 25-22, 25-10, 25-17 victory over the Panthers. The Dragons dropped the second set to the Bethel College JV, but notched a fifth-straight win with a 25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-9 victory over the Threshers.

The Blue Dragons open Jayhawk West play on Wednesday at Dodge City and then travel to the TJC Classic on Friday and Saturday in Trinidad, Colorado.

The Blue Dragons used a balanced offensive attack and another strong effort from the service line to sweep the Braves, which went 1-2 in the Blue Dragon Quad.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno led Hutchinson with 10 kills and a service ace. She had four kills in each of the first two sets.

Freshman Taniya Golden finished with seven kills. Freshman Perline Fery came off the bench in the third set to notch all five of her kills.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Ottawa 38-28 and had four total blocks and 11 service aces.

Six different Hutchinson players recorded at least one ace led by Perrine Blanc with three aces. Morgan Harvey, Andrea Serrano and Cydney Carter had two aces each.

Serrano finished with 23 assists and freshman Giovanna Ravanhanni had 13 assists.

Blanc led the Dragons with 10 digs and Serrano added eight digs.

The Blue Dragons led the opening set 9-6 when an Anna Dean kill ignited a 13-1 run, which was capped by a Harvey back-row kill for a 22-8 lead.

The second set was tight throughout. The Braves pulled within two points twice at 20-18 and 23-21. The Dragons closed out the set with a Chloe Conway kill and a Conway/Harvey double block on set point.

Leading the third set 10-8, the Dragons used a 5-1 run that was capped by a Blondie Penaflor kill and solo block to build a 15-9 lead. From that point the Dragons continued to pull away, reaching match point with back-to-back Carter service aces for a 24-15 lead. Penaflor and Serrano posted a double block on match point.

The Blue Dragons’ freshman duo of Briseno and Golden combined for 27 kills to lead the Blue Dragons to a sweep of Jayhawk East foe Neosho County in the second match on Monday night.

Briseno had season highs with 15 kills, three total blocks and three service aces. Briseno had six kills in the first set, five in the second and four more in the third set.

Golden pounded down 12 kills to help Hutchinson out-hit Neosho County 49-24. The Blue Dragons also had 8.5 team blocks and eight service aces.

Dean finished with four kills and four total blocks. Miller added four kills.

Serrano finished with 24 assists and three service aces. Ravanhanni had 15 assists. Blanc led the Dragons with eight digs.

Briseno and Golden combined for 10 of the Dragons’ 16 kills in the first set. Briseno had back-to-back aces to erase a two-point deficit and give the Dragons an early 4-3 lead. Hutchinson didn’t relinquish the lead from that point, but the Panthers kept it close. Leading 14-12, Hutch went on a small 4-1 run to create some cushion. A Briseno kill gave the Dragons a 20-15 lead. The Panthers pulled with 21-19, but the Dragons and Panthers sided out on the final seven points of the set.

Leading the second set 8-4, the Blue Dragons exploded for a 13-3 run that was capped by consecutive Briseno kills for a 21-7 lead. Two more Briseno kills and a Golden kill on the final three rallies of the set gave the Dragons their largest set win of the early season.

With the third set tied at 11, a Briseno/Conway double block started a decisive 6-0 Dragon run. The Dragons took advantage of eight Neosho County attack errors in the set to close the match in a sweep.

For the fourth-consecutive season, the Hutchinson Community College football teams opens a season ranked in the Top 5 of the preseason NJCAA rankings.

Released on Monday, the Blue Dragons open the 2022 season ranked No. 3 in the preseason rankings.

The Blue Dragons follow defending national champion New Mexico Military and No. 2 Iowa Western in the preseason rankings. Northwest Mississippi and Snow College are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

New Mexico Military received nine first-place votes. The Blue Dragons received three first-place votes.

Hutchinson will play one of the most challenging schedules in the nation in 2022 with five teams on its schedule ranked in the Top 15 and two other opponents receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons open the season with No. 13 Navarro on Saturday at Gowans Stadium. Iowa Central (Sept. 10) is ranked No. 11. Coffeyville (Sept. 24) and Butler (Oct. 1) are both receiving votes. Garden City (Oct. 22) is ranked No. 7. Independence (Nov. 5) is No. 10 and Iowa Western (Nov. 12) is ranked No. 2.

The 2022 Blue Dragons have five offensive starters, four defensive starters and two special teams' starters returning from last season, which finished at 9-2 and on a six-game winning streak. The Dragons have eight third-year players on the roster this season.

The Blue Dragons’ run of four-straight Top 5 preseason rankings began with a No. 5 ranking in 2019. The Dragons were preseason No. 1 in both 2020-21 and 2021. The Blue Dragons finished No. 3 in 2019, won the national champion in 2020-21 and placed third in 2021.

The Blue Dragons were picked to win the 2022 Jayhawk Conference championship in July.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Drew Waters drew a bases-loaded walk to break an eighth-inning tie in his major league debut, boosting the Kansas City Royals to a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday in a game rescheduled because of the lockout in April.

Joe Kelly (1-3), the seventh of eight White Sox pitchers, hit a pair of batters to start the inning. Ryan O’Hearn singled, and Waters drew a five-pitch walk with one out to break a 4-all tie.

Waters, who was recalled from Triple-A Omaha before the game, was hoping to do more.

The White Sox rallied from a four-run deficit after their starter, Michael Kopech, exited the game having faced just four hitters.

Kopech hit a batter, allowed an RBI single to Salvador Perez, and walked the bases full before leaving with left knee soreness.

Elvis Andrus drove in three runs in his third game with the White Sox. Chicago signed the veteran shortstop on Friday after the Oakland Athletics designated him for assignment.

Jose Abreu had three hits and two walks for the White Sox, who have dropped four of five since winning five straight.

Chicago stranded 11 runners, including eight from the fourth through sixth innings.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;added another key piece to his team on Sunday afternoon (August 21) with the signing of sophomore transfer&nbsp;Anthony Thomas&nbsp;(Silver Spring, Md./Olympus Prep Academy/Tennessee-Martin/Tallahassee [Fla.] Community College)&nbsp;to a Financial Aid Agreement with the program for the 2022-23 season.

A 6-foot-7, 180-pound combo guard, Thomas arrives at K-State after playing the 2021-22 season at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla., where he averaged 11 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in helping the Eagles win 21 games in one of the nation’s top junior college leagues – the Panhandle Conference. He played in 22 games with four starts as a freshman at UT-Martin in 2020-21, averaging 9.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

He scored in double figures in 15 games, which included eight games of 15 or more points and three 20-point outings. He twice scored a season-high 25 points, including against conference foe Pensacola State on Feb. 16 on 6-of-11 field goals and 11-of-14 free throws.

For the season, Thomas averaged 11.0 points on 42.3 percent (96-of-227) shooting, including 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from 3-point range, to go with 4.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while playing 25 games with 16 starts. He twice played against future teammate and JUCO All-American&nbsp;Nae’Qwan Tomlin&nbsp;(Harlem, N.Y./Urban Assembly School/Chipola [Fla.] College), who played at Chipola College.

Thomas began his college career in 2020-21 at UT-Martin, where he&nbsp;saw action in 22 of 24 games with four starts as a true freshman during an unprecedented season for the Skyhawks. In addition to navigating the pandemic conditions, Thomas and his teammates tragically lost their head coach&nbsp;Anthony Stewart&nbsp;right before the season on Nov. 15, 2020.

Despite the adversity, Thomas flourished as a true freshman, emerging as the team’s top freshman in 2020-21, ranking second in 3-point field goals (23) and fourth in scoring (9.0 ppg.), while connecting on 75.8 percent (25-of-33) from the free throw line. He became the first Skyhawk true freshman to start a season opener since 2013-14, playing 25 minutes against Evansville on Dec. 2, 2020. Among his best games was a career-high 24-point effort vs. SIUE on Jan. 30, 2021, in which, he became the first Skyhawk freshman to record a 20-point game against an OVC opponent since 2012. He connected on 9-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and went 3-of-3 from the line in 26 minutes. He also had 21 points at Belmont on Jan. 9, 2021, to go along with a career-high 6 rebounds and 2 steals in 22 minutes.

In all, Thomas averaged 9.0 points on 37.7 percent (75-of-199) shooting, including 30.7 percent (23-of-75) from 3-point range, with 2.8 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.7 steals in 24 minutes per game in 2020-21.

Thomas played his senior season at Olympus Prep Academy in Williamstown, N.J., where he earned&nbsp;NJHoops.com&nbsp;third team all-state honors for the independent/prep class in 2020. He played in over 40 games and events while playing the Great Atlantic Conference.

Thomas was rated as a three-star prospect out of Olympus Prep by&nbsp;247Sports, ranking among the top-50 players at his position for the Class of 2020. He was recognized as one of the seven national standouts from the Hoop Group Fall High School Showcase in October 2019.

⚾ Surge win over Tulsa Sunday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Harold Ramirez had three hits and drove in two runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Sunday.

Ramirez has a hit in all five games, going 9 for 21 (.429), since returning Tuesday from a broken right thumb and is hitting .337 during a resurgent season.

“I think he has a very simple approach, and he sticks with it,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “Doesn't try to do too much. Kind of takes what the pitcher gives. If you're going to work away, he'll beat you away. If you're going to come inside, he can pull balls. Just a really good hitter that's seeing the ball well."

The Rays have won seven of nine, and held opponents to three runs or fewer in eight of their last nine games.

Kansas City right-hander Zack Greinke was lifted due to forearm cramping after allowing two runs and five hits over four innings. The 38-year old was checked by a trainer with Jose Siri batting with two outs in the fourth and retired him on fly ball after taking a warm-up throw, but was replaced by Jose Cuas to start the fifth.

“He had something cramp up in his forearm, so we went out in the middle of the inning just to make sure," Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “After he got back on the bench it started tightening up and we got him out. Just needed to be careful.”

Matheny didn't rule out Greinke, who will undergo tests and be re-evaluated, making his next start.

“Everything that the trainers gave me made me believe what they think is he's going to be able to make his next start,” Matheny said.

Kansas City is 2-8 on the road in August, getting outscored 48-15. The Royals have been held to six or fewer hits in a team-record six straight games, and had 18 hits overall during the four-game series in which they lost three times.

Rays starter Ryan Yarbrough gave up two runs and three hits in 4 ⅓ innings during an 82-pitch outing. Shawn Armstrong (2-1) went 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, while Pete Fairbanks worked the ninth to get his fourth save.

Ramirez put the Rays up 3-2 on a fifth-inning RBI single off Cuas (2-2) after the Royals had tied it in the top of the inning on MJ Melendez’s run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Witt Jr.

Tampa Bay took a 2-0 lead on Ramirez’s first-inning RBI single and Christian Bethancourt’s solo homer in the second.

“I feel great,” Ramirez said. “I just keep doing what I'm doing, just focus on every at-bat to try and help the team win.”

Kansas City’s Brad Keller, who gave up five runs and six hits in two-thirds of an inning Thursday in his first relief appearance since being dropped from the rotation, allowed one hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings.

Rays: SS Wander Franco (right hamate bone surgery) was removed from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham due to ongoing hand soreness. He departed his first rehab game Tuesday with the soreness and hasn’t played since.

A little more than 48 hours after upsetting the Nos. 1 and 3 teams in the NJCAA rankings on the same day, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team will play its home-opening matches on Monday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons will take on the Ottawa University JV, Neosho County and the Bethel College JV at 4, 6 and 8 p.m., respectively, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Each team in the quad will play three matches.

Fans can enter the Sports Arena beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday. Only Hutchinson’s matches will be streamed by the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

This past weekend, the Blue Dragons faced four nationally ranked teams at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Hutchinson went 2-2 after falling to No. 19 Indian Hills in five sets and falling to No. 12 Jefferson in three sets on Friday. Against No. 3 Missouri State-West Plains and No. 1 Iowa Western on Saturday, the Blue Dragons trailed each match 2-1, but rallied in both to upset the Grizzlies and Reivers in five sets.

The Blue Dragons upset a No. 1-ranked NJCAA Division I team for the first time in program history.

The Blue Dragon quad is part of a busy first nine days of the season for the Blue Dragons. After Monday night’s action, the Blue Dragons open the 2022 Jayhawk West season on Wednesday at Dodge City. The Blue Dragons then play four matches on Friday and Saturday at the TJC Classic in Trinidad, Colorado.

All three Hutchinson opponents on Monday will be playing their season-opening matches.
