🏀 Jayhawks host longhorns on ESPN Big Monday

TULSA, Okla. --&nbsp;Wichita State used another big first half to secure its third straight road victory, this time taking down Tulsa, 86-75 on Sunday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaron-pierre-jr-/7215">Jaron Pierre Jr.</a>&nbsp;scored 19 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/craig-porter-jr-/7213">Craig Porter Jr.</a>&nbsp;added 10 rebounds and seven assists for WSU (12-11, 5-6), which swept a home-and-home from its rival for the fifth time in six American Athletic Conference seasons. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/james-rojas/7210">James Rojas</a>&nbsp;(17 points on 7-of-8 shooting),&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaykwon-walton/7208">Jaykwon Walton</a>&nbsp;(17 points) and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7214">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;(12 points, career-high six assists) also put up big numbers. The Golden Hurricane shot 40% from three (42.4% overall) but were outscored 46-24 in the paint. The Shockers shot 51.5% from the field and outrebounded the hosts, 43-32. Tulsa went the first 29 minutes of game action without an offensive rebound and didn't record a second-chance point until the 3:44-mark of the second half. The Shockers trailed 13-12 early before exploding for six baskets in a stretch of just over three minutes. Reynolds Center. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaron-pierre-jr-/7215">Jaron Pierre Jr.</a>&nbsp;scored 19 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/craig-porter-jr-/7213">Craig Porter Jr.</a>&nbsp;added 10 rebounds and seven assists for WSU (12-11, 5-6), which swept a home-and-home from its rival for the fifth time in six American Athletic Conference seasons. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/james-rojas/7210">James Rojas</a>&nbsp;(17 points on 7-of-8 shooting),&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaykwon-walton/7208">Jaykwon Walton</a>&nbsp;(17 points) and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7214">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;(12 points, career-high six assists) also put up big numbers. Helped by 14 first-half points from Pierre, the Shockers rolled to a 45-26 halftime lead and pushed the margin to as many as 24 points down the stretch. The game followed a similar script to last Sunday when WSU piled up transition points early to build a 21-point halftime cushion over ECU before letting its foot off the gas. This time Tulsa (5-17, 1-10) scored 28 points in the final 6:00 to thin the margin. Tim Dalger put up 24 points and hit five of Tulsa's 12 three-pointers. The Golden Hurricane shot 40% from three (42.4% overall) but were outscored 46-24 in the paint. The Shockers shot 51.5% from the field and outrebounded the hosts, 43-32. Tulsa went the first 29 minutes of game action without an offensive rebound and didn't record a second-chance point until the 3:44-mark of the second half. The Shockers trailed 13-12 early before exploding for six baskets in a stretch of just over three minutes. Back-to-back treys from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/7219">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;and Walton capped a 14-1 run that made it 26-14 midway through the first half. Walton and Pierre combined for 11 points in another 13-2 flurry to close out the period. The Shockers made 19-of-33 first-half shots (.576) and were plus-15 on the glass. Tulsa scored the first two buckets out of the locker room before another Shocker onslaught, spurred by equal parts style and grit. Pohto made a pair of stick-backs, then found a cutting Walton in the paint for a two-hand-slam for a 61-37 lead with 13:28 to play. Dalger's tip dunk with 36 seconds left cut the margin to 81-73, but that's as close as the Hurricane would get. NOTABLE: The Shockers' win, coupled with a UCF loss, moved WSU into sole possession of sixth-place in the conference standings. James had 27 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists as he continued to close in on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record total of 38,387 points. Brandon Ingram scored 35 points for the Pelicans. CJ McCollum had 23 points, highlighted by a late 3 to help New Orleans close out the final 3:14 on a 9-5 run that kept the Lakers at bay. Anthony Davis had 34 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers.

Irving excused from Nets-Wizards, 1 day after trade request

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving sat out the Brooklyn Nets' come-from-behind win over Washington on Saturday night, a day after he told the team he would like to be traded. The Nets said Irving's absence was due to right calf soreness, adding him to the injury report for their game against Washington. Brooklyn coach Jacque Vaughn said after the Nets' 125-123 win that Irving did not attend the game and that the player's absence was excused. Irving asked the Nets for a trade on Friday, a person with knowledge of the details told The Associated Press. The All-Star has been frustrated that the Nets have thus far refused to give him an extension on his contact that expires after this season.

Strong wind suspends third round at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Strong wind has stopped play in the AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That means a Monday finish with no amateurs. Peter Malnati is atop the leaderboard at 12-under par. Keith Mitchell and Joseph Bramlett were two behind. Mitchell faced the strongest wind on the worst part of Pebble Beach along the ocean. He made it through and then the horn sounded to stop play. The culprit was Monterey Peninsula. Officials say two holes are so exposed that golf balls were blowing around on the green. Once play stops at one course, it has to stop on all three.

MVP Matthew Tkachuk lifts Atlantic to NHL All-Star Game win

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's Matthew Tkachuk was right at home at the NHL All-Star Game. Again. Detroit's Dylan Larkin had a hat trick, Toronto's Mitch Marner had three assists and the Atlantic Division topped the Central Division 7-5 in the All-Star Game final on Saturday. Matthew Tkachuk was the MVP after a seven-point performance in two games for the Atlantic Division. Arizona's Clayton Keller, Dallas' Jason Robertson, Colorado teammates Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen all had goals for the Central in the final.

Gary Bettman defends NHL handling of Pride night situations

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman defended the way the league and two teams handled controversial developments involving Pride night celebrations. Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov did not take part in warmups citing religion for his refusal to wear a Pride-themed jersey. The New York Rangers opted not to wear Pride jerseys or use Pride stick tape as part of their night despite previously advertising they planned to do so. Bettman said the league has to respect individuals' choices. Also in his state of the NHL address at All-Star Weekend he announced the event next year will take place in Toronto and addressed concerns about the league's current playoff format.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 25 points and Jalen Hood-Schifino delivered the clinching basket on a breakaway dunk with 2 seconds left to give No. 21 Indiana a 79-74 victory over No. 1 Purdue. It's the third time the Hoosiers have beaten a top-ranked team on their home court and the roaring, raucous crowd celebrated by quickly storming the court. Zach Edey had 33 points and 18 rebounds and nearly led the Boilermakers all the way back from a 16-point first half deficit. But after Braden Smith cut the deficit to 71-70 with 2:03 to go, the Hoosiers outscored Purdue 8-4 to close it out.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Reigning NASCAR champion Joey Logano opened last year with a win in the inaugural Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It started a season in which he won his second Cup title. NASCAR is now back for the exhibition Clash for the second consecutive year and Logano said he considers the inaugural race one of the biggest wins of his career. The race Sunday does not count for points and is a warm-up for the season-opening Daytona 500. But nearby Auto Club Speedway in Fontana revealed it won't host racing in 2024 as it undergoes a renovation, so the Coliseum could be auditioning for a spot as a points-paying race as the Southern California representative next year.

The Longhorns are now a game ahead of Iowa State (7-3) and two games of Kansas, K-State and TCU (6-4). So, I just got to watch film, and find out ways to be aggressive, but not hurt my team. 🏀 MBB: Dragons ice cold from three against No. 23 Grizzlies

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the first time this season, the Blue Dragons (18-6, 12-7) lost at home.

Before Saturday night's 11th Annual Pink Out to benefit the Cancer Council of Reno County, Hutchinson was a perfect 12-0 at home.

The No. 21 Grizzlies (20-3, 15-3) put the only blemish on Hutchinson's home record this season thanks to Freddie Wallace's 24 points (on 8 of 12 shooting) and seven rebounds.

Butler got 16 points from Maycee James and another 11 from Sincere Harrod.

Hutchinson opened the game with a quick basket and led for 48 seconds before Butler took over and never looked back. The Grizzlies led for 38:01. The game was tied for 71 seconds.

Hutchinson pulled within 54-53 with eight seconds left in the third quarter before a Kali Howard foul put Harrod on the line. Harrod hit both free throws to put Butler up three headed into the final frame.

That lead ballooned to 11 with 5:37 to play.

Hutchinson got back within four on a Morgan Browning three, but Butler hit enough free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

🏀 WBB: Dragons fall short of No. 21 Grizzlies

AMES, Iowa (AP) —&nbsp;Jaren Holmes led No. 13 Iowa State with 15 points to lift the Cyclones to a 68-53 win over No. 8 Kansas on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.

Osun Osunniyi added 13 for the Cyclones (16-6, 7-3 Big 12), who stayed within at least a game of front-running Texas in the Big 12 Conference standings.

“Today, we came out and played desperate,” Holmes said.

Jalen Wilson led the Jayhawks (18-5, 6-4) with 26 points for his sixth straight game with at least 20 points, which is the longest stretch by a Jayhawk since Dedric Lawson also scored 20-plus in six straight in 2018. Wilson has also scored 159 points over his last six games, which is the most by a Jayhawk since at least 1996-97. Wayne Simien had the previous high with 156 points.

“It’s not a formula for success for us,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We need balance from our starting five. If one guy feels like he’s got to go do it all on his own, it crashes the offense.”

The Cyclones led for all but 1:14 of the game, building a 34-16 scoring edge in the paint. Kansas struggled early, making just two of their first 10 shots and committing 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on Big 12 NOW, with Brenda VanLengen and Niccolly Wuellner on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.

The Jayhawks are 14-6 on the year and 4-5 in Big 12 play following a 77-73 setback at Baylor on Wednesday. Texas is 17-6 on the year and leads the conference at 8-2 during league play.

Against Baylor, Kansas was led by Holly Kersgieter, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals for her fourth game of 20+ points during Big 12 play. Kersgieter is KU’s second-leading scorer for the season, averaging 14.8 points per game. Three other Jayhawks scored in double figures at Baylor as Wyvette Mayberry and Zakiyah Franklin had 13 points apiece, while Taiyanna Jackson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jackson added to her list of accolades on Friday as she was named one of the Top 10 candidates for the 2023 Lisa Leslie Award, which is presented to the top center in NCAA Division I women’s basketball. On Jan. 24 she was one of 15 players named to the 2023 Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. Jackson had three blocks at Baylor, moving into sole possession of third place on KU’s career list with 152.

Kersgieter moved into 15th place on KU’s career scoring list after scoring 20 points at Baylor. She surpassed Jaclyn Johnson (1997-2001) for 15th, and she currently has 1,384 career points. Kersgieter leads the Jayhawks with 16.1 points per game during conference games.

Franklin also climbed a spot on the all-time scoring list against Baylor, scoring 13 points in the game to give her 1,257 career points. Franklin is now 20th on the all-time list after surpassing Monica Engelman (2009-13). She’s third on the team with 14.3 points per game for the year.

Texas comes to Lawrence ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll and winners of four straight games to improve to 8-2 in league play. Six different players are scoring 10 or more points per game for the Longhorns, who feature the No. 3 scoring offense in the Big 12 at 76.7 points per game. 🏀 MBB: Kansas plays at Iowa State Saturday

SALINA, Kan.—Both Hutchinson Salthawk basketball teams traveled to Salina and came away with wins on Friday night with the Salthawk girls sliding past the Salina South Cougars 33 to 20 and the boys taking the nightcap game 66 to 40.

While it wasn't pretty, the Salthawk girls did get the "W", primarily because of playing suffocating defense throughout the whole night.&nbsp; 

Hutch led by 10 points at the half 15-5 due in part to Libby Jackson's 6 point effort including going 4 of 6 at the line. The Salthawk defense was superb, holding South to only one field goal and three free throws in the first half. The Salthawk girls pulled away in the fourth quarter hitting 9 of 12 free throws with Grace Posch going 4 for 4 and Aliyah Green hitting 4 for 6 from the line.

Hutchinson was led in scoring with Posch scoring 9, followed by 8 apiece from Aliyah Green and Josie McLean. Libby Jackson added 6 and Kaia Smith came off the bench to score 2.

Hutchinson girls go to 11-3 and host Goddard-Eisenhower (9-4) in a non-conference game at the Salthawk Activity Center on Tuesday.

The Salthawk boys got a huge game from Garrett Robertson on Friday, as he hit 8 treys and scored a game high 24 points on the night. Hutch led at the half 31 to 23 before Salina South's Jake Humphrey scored nine of his 16 points in the third. Hutch answered right back with 21 third quarter points including a Jay Lewis 3 pointer after replacing Terrell King who was sent to the bench in foul trouble.&nbsp; In the fourth quarter, the Salthawk defense took over as Hutch held the Cougars to only 1 free throw to go on a 14-1 run to close out the game.

SALINA, Kan.—Both Hutchinson Salthawk basketball teams traveled to Salina and came away with wins on Friday night with the Salthawk girls sliding past the Salina South Cougars 33 to 20 and the boys taking the nightcap game 66 to 40.GIRLS RECAPWhile it wasn't pretty, the Salthawk girls did get the "W", primarily because of playing suffocating defense throughout the whole night.&nbsp; Hutch led by 10 points at the half 15-5 due in part to Libby Jackson's 6 point effort including going 4 of 6 at the line. TOPEKA - Hutchinson Community College freshman distance runner Serenity Larson earned her first career national qualification on Friday on Day 1 of the Washburn Open at the Washburn University Indoor Athletic Facility.

The freshman from Dodge City finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a national-qualifying time of 18 minutes, 53.82 seconds. That time is the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

The Blue Dragons had two national qualifiers on Friday to bring their season total up to six.

Hutchinson’s Distance Medley Relay team placed seventh on Friday with a time of 13:05.36. The relay team of Ellie Van Zelfden, Kaylee James, Gracie Lambert and Taylor Hoskinson posted the fourth-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history. TOPEKA – Sophomore Caleb Manning was the top finisher on Friday for the Hutchinson Community College men’s track team at the Washburn Open.

Manning finished second in the triple jump with a top attempt of 48 feet, 2 inches (14.68m). That mark was a personal record for Manning, who qualified for the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships two weeks ago at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility at the Rust Buster Classic.

Manning’s mark on Friday improved that mark and was the fourth-best triple jump in the nation this season.

The Blue Dragon men had four other Top 10 performances on Day 1 of the two-day meet at the site of the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships.

High jumpers Donovan Bryant and Alex Holt tied for seventh after both Blue Dragons cleared 6 feet, 0.75 inch (1.85m).

Every conference, regardless of the level of play, has its classic rivalry matchups. The Jayhawk Conference has Hutchinson and Butler.

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team takes on the rival and 23rd-ranked Grizzlies for the 197th time at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena for the Blue Dragons’ annual Pink-Out Night game.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (analyst) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide the stream for the game starting at 7:15 p.m.

The series started on January 4, 1929 in El Dorado. The Blue Dragons lead the all-time series 128-68, but along the way there have been countless matchups, including 17 Region VI Tournament meetings between Hutchinson and Butler.

The Blue Dragons enter the second meeting of the season with the Grizzlies coming off their best overall game of the season, a 91-65 victory over Cowley on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Aaron Franklin scored 26 points and Aaron Potter had a career-high 22 points to lead the Dragons, who shot 48.5 percent with 13 3-pointers. Defensively, the Dragons held Cowley to an opponent-low 65 points - including 28 points in the first half - and 39.0 percent shooting.

The first time the Blue Dragons played the Grizzlies, a 68-63 loss on December 3 in El Dorado, the Blue Dragons trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half and brought the game back to one possession in the final two minutes. The Blue Dragons committed 28 turnovers, but forced 29 turnovers to get back into the game. Antonio Green had 14 points to lead the Blue Dragons. Treylon Payne had 18 points to lead the Grizzlies.

Since being upset by Northwest Tech on January 25, the Grizzlies have won a pair of tough games over Pratt and Coffeyville, both at home. Butler has won 8 of its last 9 games.

The Grizzlies knocked off No. 13 Coffeyville 93-75 on Wednesday in El Dorado. Butler shot 49.1 percent with five players scoring in double figures. Rob Brown and Isaiah Williams had 16 points each to lead the Grizzlies. Butler trailed Coffeyville 40-33 at halftime, but outscored the Red Ravens 50-35 in the second half.

Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. In a corresponding move, pitcher&nbsp;Anthony Misiewicz&nbsp;was designated for assignment.

Greinke, 39, went 4-9 with a 3.68 ERA (56 ER in 137.0 IP) and 73 strikeouts in 26 starts with Kansas City in 2022. The 2023 season will mark his 20th&nbsp;in the big leagues.

He reached several milestones last season, including making his 500th career start on June 29 vs. Texas, becoming one of 48 pitchers to reach that mark, one of only 28 in the Expansion Era (since 1961) and the first since&nbsp;CC Sabathia&nbsp;made his 500th start with the Yankees on Aug. 1, 2017. Among the group of 28 pitchers with 500 starts since 1961, Greinke’s career win percentage of .613 (223-141) ranks 6th, trailing only&nbsp;Roger Clemens&nbsp;(.658),&nbsp;Randy Johnson&nbsp;(.646),&nbsp;Mike Mussina&nbsp;(.638),&nbsp;Jim Palmer&nbsp;(.638) and&nbsp;Andy Pettitte&nbsp;(.626). He finished the season with 514 career starts, including 195 with the Royals (37.9%), which are 9 starts behind&nbsp;Danny Duffy&nbsp;(204) for the 7th most in franchise history.

In his July 10 start vs. Cleveland, Zack became the 17th pitcher since 1988 (when data is available) to record 50,000 career pitches. Greinke (51,093) and&nbsp;Justin Verlander&nbsp;(51,434) are the only two active pitchers on the list, which is led by Hall of Famer&nbsp;Tom Glavine&nbsp;(68,226).
