KANSAS CITY, Kansas – The Hutchinson Community College Women’s Soccer team opened the 2022 Jayhawk Conference season with a key 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Blue Devils on Wednesday at the KCK Soccer Complex.

The Blue Dragons start a season 3-0 for the first time since 2018. The Dragons are 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Blue Dragons play their 2022 home opener on Sunday afternoon where they play host Western Wyoming at 2 p.m. at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Before the Blue Dragons’ game, Western Wyoming will play Allen at 11 a.m.

Tied at 1-1, sophomore Emma Scholl scored the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute when she scored her second goal of the season off a Julia De Souza pass.

The Blue Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when sophomore Hadlie Lowe took a Jayda Wyatt pass on the left side of the box and drove in to score her fifth goal of the season. With her 23rd career goal, Lowe moves into sole possession of 16th place on the Blue Dragon career goals list. Lowe has scored goals in three-straight games to open the season.

After leading 2-1 at halftime, the Blue Dragons controlled possession for most the second half. After back-to-back-to-back corner kick opportunities midway through the second half, freshman Kendra Brungardt scored her first career goal, scoring off an Ella-Mae Miller corner kick to give Hutchinson aa 3-1 lead in the 71st minute.

The Blue Dragons out-shot the Blue Devils 13-6, including 7-3 in shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona (2-0) earned the victory with three saves.

The Blue Dragons generated eight corner kicks, including seven in the second half.

GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 6-0-1 all-time vs. Kansas City. … The Blue Dragons capture their 150th all-time conference game in program history. Hutchinson is now 150-34-8 in KJCCC games.

⚽️ HutchCC Soccer: Dragons defeat KCK 3-1 to start season 3-0

LIBERAL – Freshman Taniya Golden had a career-high 20 kills, but the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end with a four-set Jayhawk West loss at Seward County in a nationally ranked matchup.

The No. 13 Blue Dragons won the first set, but struggled the rest of the match in a 25-22, 19-25, 25-27, 20-25 loss to the No. 17 Saints at the Greenhouse.

Hutchinson falls to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons return home on Friday for a triangular with Cloud County and the Friends University JV at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons hit .333 in the opening set, but only .155 over the final three set. The Blue Dragons were out-blocked by the Saints 14-8.

Golden led the Blue Dragons with 20 kills on .393 hitting.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno had 12 kills on just .105 hitting. She had four of Hutchinson’s seven service aces. Freshman Anna Dean had five of her eight kills in the opening set.

Sophomore middle Blondie Penaflor had six total blocks, including one solo block. Baylee Miller had four blocks.

Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 22 assists. Sophomore Andrea Serrano had 16 assists. Sophomore Morgan Harvey had a team-high 10 digs. Freshman Perrine Blanc had six digs.

Seward County hit .385 for the match with Seyun Park leading the Saints with 15 kills, all 15 kills in the final three sets.

The Blue Dragons served strong in the opening set with five aces and the Blue Dragons had six kills on Saints overpasses. Dean had five kills and Golden had four kills in the set. The Blue Dragons took a 15-10 lead on a Dean kill. The Saints eventually tied the set at 20, but a Dean kill and Ravenhani ace started a 5-2 Blue Dragon run, closing out a 25-22 win with a Briseno ace.

Hutchinson trailed the second set 10-9, but the Saints scored five in a row and eight of the next 10 rallies to build an 18-11 lead. A Golden kill cut the Dragons within 20-18, but the Saints scored 5 of the final 6 points to close out the set and tie the match at 1-1.

Four early kills by Briseno got the Blue Dragons out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. A Golden kill gave the Dragons a 13-6 lead. The Saints roared back into the set with a 12-4 run to take an 18-17 lead. The lead changed hands four different times from that point. A Penaflor kill gave the Dragons a 22-21 lead. Seward scored the next three points and had a pair of set points in hand. A Golden kill and Penaflor solo block tied the set at 24-all. A Miller kill tied the set at 25, but the Saints scored the final two points for a 27-25 win.

After three early ties in the fourth set, Seward County built a 6-3 lead and the Dragons never could get the lead back. Trailing 12-9, the Dragons scored three in a row to tie the set. Seward answered with a 4-1 run. A Golden kills pulled the Dragons within 20-19, but the Saints scored 6 of the match’s final 7 points to close out the Dragons.

In his final game in Cincinnati, Pujols shook off going hitless in five at-bats to deliver against Chase Anderson, driving in automatic runner Paul Goldschmidt with one out. Nootbaar went deep two batters later. The Cardinals used five infielders to get out of jams in the 11th and 12th innings, helping Andre Pallante get the win. Pallante worked the final three innings.

ATLANTA (AP) — Kyle Wright pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his major league-leading 17th victory, Austin Riley and Ronald Acuña Jr. homered, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Wednesday night. Wright broke a tie with Houston’s Justin Verlander and Tony Gonsolin of the Los Angeles Dodgers to take the lead in wins. The defending World Series champion Braves avoided their first four-game losing streak since last Sept. 14-18. Atlanta, with the NL’s third-best record at 80-51, remained three games behind the New York Mets in the East Division.

(AP) — When Denver Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett texted Brett Rypien on cutdown day asking him to drop by the team’s facilities, the former Boise State star had a sinking feeling that he’d been cut coming out of camp again. “That’s never a good sign, so I wasn’t too optimistic about the whole situation,” Rypien said Wednesday. The news wasn’t what Rypien or many others expected, however: Hackett told him he had beaten out veteran Josh Johnson to serve as Russell Wilson’s primary backup. “Pretty emotional moment for me,” said Rypien, who was the Broncos’ No. 3 QB last season behind Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock and never got into a regular-season game. The current deal goes through the 2024-25 academic year. New Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says with the changing landscape of college athletics, the league welcomes the opportunity to determine if an early extension is in the best interest of all parties. Oklahoma and Texas are set to leave for the Southeastern Conference at the end of the Big 12's current deal. Football independent BYU, along with American Athletic Conference schools Cincinnati, Houston and UCF join the current 10-team Big 12 next summer.

UNDATED (AP) — The university presidents who oversee the College Football Playoff are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss expanding the four-team format. The presidents hope to accelerate a process that bogged down last year and re-open the possibility that a new model for crowning champion could be implemented as soon as the 2024 season. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the CFP’s Board of Managers, led by Mississippi State President Mark Keenum, is set to convene by video conference. All the people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the board's plans were not being made public.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden says he is “ashamed” about his old offensive emails that cost him his job and hopes to get another chance in football. Gruden spoke publicly about the affair at the Little Rock Touchdown Club for the first time since he resigned as coach of the Raiders last October. The resignation followed the publication by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal of emails he had sent from 2011 to 2018 that contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield denies that he said anything malicious toward his former team, the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield said “first, I didn’t say that" and added that “everybody is going to write what they want.” Mayfield said he was shocked to hear the report on Tuesday that NFL Network analytics analyst Cynthia Frelund, who was working as a Buffalo Bills sideline reporter for Friday night’s preseason game against Carolina, said on a podcast that Mayfield had some choice words for his former team. The Panthers will open the regular season at home against the Browns on Sept. 11.

Louise Cocking is a rare commodity entering the 2022 cross country season for Hutchinson Community College

Cocking, a sophomore from Derbyshire, England, will be a rare third-year participant for the Blue Dragons this season.

Cocking’s resume as a Blue Dragon cross country runner is impressive:

+ She finished fifth in the NJCAA National Championships and became the first Blue Dragon to earn first-team NJCAA All-America honors.

+ Last season, Cocking finished 21st nationally and earned NJCAA Coaches All-America honors.

+ Cocking owns the third-fastest 5,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history (18:56.42).

+ In addition to her cross country achievement, Cocking is a two-time NJCAA Track and Field All-American with school records in the indoor 3,000 meters and outdoor 10,000 meters.

“It’s good to have everybody back,” seventh-year cross country coach Justin Riggs said. “Obviously, we’re excited about that. (Louise) has proven to be one of the best distance runners in the NJCAA for the last couple of years.”

Along with the third-year sophomore are Syndey Grauer (Marysville), who is another top 5 contributor and Aidyn White (Buhler). Courtney Baetz (Downs) is another sophomore returning. She didn’t run for the cross country team last season, but was on the 2022 Blue Dragon men’s track and field team.

Riggs brings in a talented group of freshmen who are going to make things interesting this season.

During the team’s annual Time Trial two weeks ago, Cocking ran the fastest time trial time of her career … and finished fourth.

Among the new Hutchinson runners, Riggs has freshmen Gracie Lambert (Lindsborg) and Taylor Hoskinson (Haven), who had great running careers in high school. Lambert, from Smoky Valley, was the Class 3A 800- and 1,600-meter state champion this past year. Hoskinson competed in the two same races at the state meet and took fourth in the 800 and fifth in the mile. Hoskinson was the 3A regional champion in the 800. Lambert was also a regional champion in the 800.

Serenity Larson also comes in from Dodge City a state qualifier and top 12 finisher in the mile and two-mile races in track.

Last season, the Blue Dragon women posted their second-straight Top 15 national finish with a 12th-place showing in the NJCAA Championships. The Dragons finished fourth in Region VI and third in the Jayhawk West.

One sophomore returns in Carsyn Turpin (Shawnee). He will have some help with a bunch of talented in-state freshmen runners.

Hayden Keller, a freshman from Buhler, finished in the top 20 at the state cross country meet where his school won its fourth straight team title. He was also the regional runner-up and also qualified and finished in the top 10 in the 800 and 1,600 in 4A at the state track meet.

Louis Wilson from Topeka West and Douwe Benesink from The Netherlands are also expected to be solid contributors to the team.

“We’ll got a lot less experience on the men, but I’m excited about that,” Riggs said. “It’ll be kind of a learning curve. The men go from racing 5K in high school to 8K at the college level. It takes a good adjustment, especially for the freshman. It’ll be a lot of learning experiences this year, but we’ve got a pretty solid squad there, I think.”

The men’s team didn’t post league, regional or championship team scores last season with only four runners competing at the end of 2021.

The Blue Dragons cross country season begins with the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic Thursday at the Fun Valley Sports Complex. The women will lead off the night with their race at 8:30 p.m. with the men’s race following at 9:05 p.m.

She didn’t run for the cross country team last season, but was on the 2022 Blue Dragon men’s track and field team.Riggs brings in a talented group of freshmen who are going to make things interesting this season.During the team’s annual Time Trial two weeks ago, Cocking ran the fastest time trial time of her career … and finished fourth.Among the new Hutchinson runners, Riggs has freshmen Gracie Lambert (Lindsborg) and Taylor Hoskinson (Haven), who had great running careers in high school. Lambert, from Smoky Valley, was the Class 3A 800- and 1,600-meter state champion this past year. Hoskinson competed in the two same races at the state meet and took fourth in the 800 and fifth in the mile. Hoskinson was the 3A regional champion in the 800. Lambert was also a regional champion in the 800.Serenity Larson also comes in from Dodge City a state qualifier and top 12 finisher in the mile and two-mile races in track.Last season, the Blue Dragon women posted their second-straight Top 15 national finish with a 12th-place showing in the NJCAA Championships. The Dragons finished fourth in Region VI and third in the Jayhawk West.MEN’S PREVIEWOne sophomore returns in Carsyn Turpin (Shawnee). He will have some help with a bunch of talented in-state freshmen runners.Hayden Keller, a freshman from Buhler, finished in the top 20 at the state cross country meet where his school won its fourth straight team title. He was also the regional runner-up and also qualified and finished in the top 10 in the 800 and 1,600 in 4A at the state track meet.Louis Wilson from Topeka West and Douwe Benesink from The Netherlands are also expected to be solid contributors to the team.“We’ll got a lot less experience on the men, but I’m excited about that,” Riggs said. “It’ll be kind of a learning curve. The men go from racing 5K in high school to 8K at the college level. It takes a good adjustment, especially for the freshman. The 26-year-old was accused of sexual misconduct and harassment by two dozen women during massage therapy sessions in Texas. The idea was that it would give established players a chance to profit off their fame but wouldn’t be used as a recruiting weapon. That’s not how it’s worked out. But there’s nothing stopping colleges from pointing out to recruits how much their athletes on campus have made through NIL compensation deals. It has now become common.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.&nbsp; — The Wichita Wind Surge dropped the series opener in Springfield Tuesday night 7-6 as the Cardinals came from behind in the win.

The Springfield Cardinals sent eleven batters to the plate in the seventh and scored six runs.

Alex Isola took Cardinals starter, Michael McGreevy deep in the first inning for his ninth home run of the season giving the Wind Surge a 2-0 lead.

Yunior Severino got on base with a ground rule double in the fourth inning. Anthony Prato followed it up with an RBI single to extend the lead to three for Wichita.

Daniel Gossett threw four no-hit scoreless innings to start tonight. Gossett gave up his first hit in the fifth inning on a double from Errol Robinson. Cardinals’ leftfielder, Matt Koperniak, later brought Robinson in on an RBI triple. Gossett was relieved by Steven Cruz after five innings with five walks and nine strikeouts.

Koperniak recorded his second RBI on the night in the seventh to get the Cardinals offense rolling. Springfield recorded five more runs and took the lead 7-3 headed to the eighth.

Steven Cruz recorded the loss tonight after giving up three runs on 1 and 1/3 innings pitched.

The Wind Surge made a late game push behind a solo shot from Jair Camargo and a two-run home run from Aaron Sabato. The two home runs were not enough, and the Surge fell short with a score of 7-6.

The first place Wind Surge lead Springfield by four games with 17 to play in the regular season. The two teams meet five more times this week.

La Russa’s absence was announced about one hour before the first pitch. He showed no signs of health trouble during his pregame session with reporters. Bench coach Miguel Cairo took over as Chicago fell for the 10th time in its last 12 games since moving to a season-high five games over .500 on Aug. 16.

Gavin Sheets homered twice and drove in five runs for the White Sox.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. says he underwent surgery a day after being shot in what the team called an attempted robbery or carjacking. A report by District of Columbia police indicated Robinson was shot in one of his legs by two suspects on Sunday. Sports Headlines for Tuesday

The top six teams remained intact in the NJCAA Division I Football Rankings after Week 1.

That means the Hutchinson Community College Football team stayed No. 3 this week.

The Top six teams in this week's rankings are New Mexico Military, Iowa Western, Hutchinson, Northwest Mississippi, Snow College and East Mississippi.

New Mexico Military got seven of the nine first-place votes. The Blue Dragons received the other two.

The Blue Dragons rolled in their 2022 season opener on Saturday at Gowans Stadium after a 42-0 victory over previous No. 13 Navarro. The Blue Dragons travel to Ellsworth this Saturday in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

The Jayhawk Conference is once again well represented this week. Hutchinson is the only team in the Top 5. After a big season-opening victory over previous No. 7 Garden City, Butler jumped into the rankings at No. 10. Garden City falls to No. 12 and Coffeyville moved into the poll at No. 14. Independence is receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in five-straight polls dating back to last season.

🏈 HutchCC FB: Blue Dragons remain at No. 3 after huge Wk1 victory

For the first time in four years the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team is in the NJCAA Division I national rankings.

Riding a 10-match winning streak that included five-set wins over previous No. 1 Iowa Western and No. 3 Missouri State University-West Plains, the Blue Dragons go from unranked in the preseason poll to No. 13 this week.

The Blue Dragons are 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons will get an immediate test with their new ranking as they travel to No. 17 Seward County on Wednesday night.

The last time the Blue Dragons were ranked was at No. 17 in the 2018 preseason rankings. The last time Hutchinson was ranked in a regular-season poll was No. 20 in the final poll of 2015. That team finished ninth at the NJCAA Tournament.

The Blue Dragons and Saints are the only two Jayhawk West teams in this week's rankings. Butler is receiving votes.

Florida SouthWestern takes over as the No. 1 team in the nation, receiving all eight votes. New Mexico Military is second, followed by Snow College, Western Nebraska and Salt Lake.

In addition to Hutchinson's league match on Wednesday in Liberal, the Blue Dragons will be at home on Friday with a triangular against Cloud County and the Friends University JV, starting at 4 p.m.

"We're doing a lot of good things good-on-good and he's having to go against the first-team defense (in fall camp)," Klieman said. "Has he made mistakes? You bet, and he's owned the mistakes and he's learning from the mistakes, and it's going to take some game reps as well as him getting more comfortable with how Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1641">Collin Klein</a>&nbsp;calls it.
