🏈 Blue Dragons, Red Ravens to meet in all KJCCC National Semifinal

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to rebound from a two-game losing streak as the Blue Dragons travel to play longtime rival Butler at 4 p.m. Saturday in El Dorado's Power Plant.

The meeting will be the 197th in the two stories programs histories. The Blue Dragons own a 128-67 overall record over Butler. Last season, the Blue Dragons swept the Grizzlies in two meetings. Two years ago, Butler swept the season series against the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, falling to No. 21 Barton 101-75 last Saturday at the Sports Arena and 111-95 on the road Wednesday at Cowley.

The Blue Dragons (8-3, 2-3) continue to lead the Jayhawk Conference and are now No. 2 in the NJCAA in scoring offense at 108.2 points per game.

Blue Dragon redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;leads the nation with 279 points scored and is fifth in the NJCAA in scoring average at 25.4 points per game.

Franklin comes off his fourth 30-point game of the season after scoring 34 points in Hutchinson's loss to Cowley on Wednesday in Arkansas City. Freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frierson_tyreece_qllh">Ty Frierson</a>&nbsp;had 23 points with four 3-pointers and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;added 12 points.

After shooting 55.3 percent in the first half, the Blue Dragons went cold in the second half, shooting only 33.3 percent. The Dragons and Tigers were tied at 76, but Cowley outscored the Dragons 35-19 over the final 8 minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Butler enters Saturday's game with an impressive signature and comeback win on Wednesday over No. 11 Coffeyville. The Grizzlies trailed 32-18 at halftime and roared back to outscore the Red Ravens 53-32 in the second half and came away with a 70-64 road victory. Tahjae Hill sparked the comeback with 20 points off the bench for Butler. Isaiah Williams chipped in 12 points. Butler's defense forced 17 Red Raven turnovers.

The 196 games played against Butler represent the most games played by the Blue Dragons against any single opponent. The 128 wins vs. the Grizzlies are the third most against a single opponent. The Blue Dragons own 151 wins over Pratt and 140 victories over Garden City.

🏀 Blue Dragons, Grizzlies to clash for 196th time on Saturday

Normally when the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team and the Butler Grizzlies get together, there is a lot on the line.

Saturday's 2 p.m. encounter at the Power Plant in El Dorado will be no different for yet another Top 25 showdown between the two Jayhawk Conference powers.

However, both the No. 11 Blue Dragons and No. 222 Grizzlies enter Saturday's contest smarting a bit as both Hutchinson and Butler come off losses in midweek games on the road.

The Blue Dragon women fell behind Cowley 9-0 before scoring, rallied to take a one-point lead, but a late 6-0 Tiger run was too much to overtime in a 55-49 loss on Wednesday at Cowley.

The Blue Dragons had a season-low offensive out and hit a season-low 3 for 21 from 3-point range.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;had 11 points each.

Butler also was right in the thick of its game on Wednesday at Coffeyville. Tied at 49 after three quarters, the Grizzlies were outscored 19-11 in the final 10 minutes and dropped a 68-60 decision to the Red Ravens for their first loss of the season. Jada Knight had 11 points to pace the Grizzlies.

As rough as things have been for the Blue Dragons offensively, the defense has been stellar, especially over the last three games. Hutchinson is allowing only 54.3 points per game. Opposing teams have shot only 32.1 percent and the Dragons are forcing an average of 19 turnovers per game.

Once again, the Blue Dragons face one of the top defensive teams in the KJCCC in Butler. The Grizzlies are allowing 55.2 points per game, which is second-best in the Jayhawk. Butler is allowing opponents to shoot 38.9 percent and the Grizzlies lead the league in steals with 16.1 picks per game.

The Blue Dragons complete a stretch of playing on the road in 4 of 5 times. So far the Dragons are 2-2 in that stretch.

The next week is also a critical week with a home game against Coffeyville and road game at Dodge City next Week.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons on the road for top 25 battle at Butler

MAIZE, Kan. — Avery Johnson of Maize was named the 2022 <a href="https://www.maxpreps.com/news/eq1NWgAFc0GUGyv5DWTxkQ/avery-johnson-named-2022-maxpreps-kansas-high-school-football-player-of-the-year.htm">MaxPreps Kansas High School Football Player of the Year</a> this week.

The 6-foot-3, 170-pound senior quarterback helped the Eagles go 12-1 and reach the Class 5A state championship game.

Johnson threw for 2,750 yards and 29 touchdowns to just three interceptions while running for another 816 yards and 15 scores on 98 carries. Maize averaged 47.9 points per game and were held under 40 just twice in 13 games, one of those was a nail-biter against Hutchinson in the Class 5A playoffs.

Johnson chose Kansas State over 23 other FBS offers, including Auburn, Florida State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin.

Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.

The expansion is expected to produce about $450 million in additional gross revenue for the conferences and schools that participate. The plan to expand the playoff was unveiled publicly in June 2021 and it took 18 months of haggling and delays to finally complete.

Great family – Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. Great kid. So excited for him to be playing college basketball. Again, Coach Tang, he's doing a tremendous job. They have a good basketball team at 6-1 and we're just excited for the challenge. … Extra motivation on both sides coming off tough losses: "Both teams are coming off a loss. That was a tough game for us against Missouri, a tough game for them against Butler. Both of us will be ready to go for that game. In order to win on the road, you can't turn the basketball over, you've got to defend at a high level, and you've got to play for 40 minutes. So that's what we need to do." … Florida transfer Keyontae Johnson's impact at K-State: "He was the preseason player to year in the SEC, so obviously he was already a talented player. Like I said, we brought him in on a visit. One of my former players, a guy by the name of Stefan Welch, played for me at Arkansas, coached him. We got him on a visit. He wound up going to Florida. He's one of those guys that can score the basketball. He finishes well around the basket. He's got a big, strong body. He can shoot the three-ball, and he plays with a lot of confidence. I know he's excited to be back on the floor and we've got to do a good job against him. He's one of the best players in college basketball." … Facing a big K-State front line after several games against smaller lineups: "We play the guys that we think can help us win every game. Everybody will get an opportunity. It just depends on matchups and what we're doing in a game situation. They definitely have size. We've got size. So we're going to go out and try to match up exactly how we're supposed to be in each game – our system versus their system -- and try to play inside-out." … K-State's Markquis Nowell: "He's really good. He can pressure the basketball. Last game we turned it over a lot. We've got to make sure we really value the basketball. He's one of the best guards in the country at putting pressure on the basketball. So we've got to do a good job of taking care, being able to get in our offense, not let him speed us up. He played really well down here last year and that was a big reason they won the game. He made a big three late in the game. He came up with a big steal. So we've got to do a good job on him. The Jayhawks romped past the Tigers 102-65 last year, when they resumed their series after a nine-year hiatus following Missouri’s departure for the SEC. Kansas has not faced them on the road since losing on Feb. 4, 2012.

“There’s no reason we shouldn’t be rested before we play Mizzou,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said, “and there’s some things we definitely need to work on. Hopefully we’ll be better equipped when we go over there.”

The teams were meeting for just the third time and first since 2018, when the Jayhawks edged Seton Hall in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They went on to play for the national championship this year.

Now the defending champs, Kansas built a big first-half lead against the Pirates on Thursday night. But rather than going on one of their familiar runs to take control of the game, the Jayhawks methodically extended their advantage over the first 20 minutes, taking advantage of their speed on the perimeter to get easy baskets at the rim.

Meanwhile, Seton Hall couldn’t make a shot.

The Pirates missed their first eight from beyond the arc, went 19 of 32 from the foul line and rarely got anything to go that wasn’t at the basket. And that made digging out of their halftime hole seemingly impossible.

By the time KC Ndefo curled in their first 3, the Jayhawks had extended their lead to 50-31 with 14 1/2 minutes to go.

The poor shooting, coupled with turnover problems, proved too much for Seton Hall to overcome.

Kansas had 15 steals in the win, which is the most by the Jayhawks since Nov. 11, 2011 when the team also had 15 steals against Towson. The Jayhawks also finished with six players in double figures for the first time since 2019 against Towson.

Seton Hall was similarly poor from beyond the arc in losses to Iowa, Oklahoma and Siena, when the Pirates were 1 of 9 from the 3-point line in a 65-60 defeat their last time out. They were 20 of 32 from the foul line in that game.

Kansas forced the Pirates into 16 turnovers while committing 11 of their own, and they had a big edge on the boards, which meant the Jayhawks simply had more opportunities on the offensive end. They took advantage of them, too.

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;Kansas Volleyball won its first-round match in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season as the Jayhawks defeated Miami 3-0 on Thursday at the Devaney Center.

Set scores for the match were 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 in favor of the Jayhawks, who improved to 19-10 on the year. Kansas advances to the second round to face Nebraska on Friday at 7 p.m. CT in Lincoln.

"We were really good in all phases tonight. I thought we served well and passed well, and I’m real happy with the way we played. We’re excited this time of year to keep playing and see what tomorrow brings."

On the strength of 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, the Jayhawks won the first set 25-17. Caroline Bien had four kills, while Rachel Langs, Anezka Szabo and Ayah Elnady had three apiece and one combined attack error as the Jayhawks pulled ahead after being tied nine times, the last at 13-all. KU scored the last four points of the set, finishing things off with two blocks, first a combo from Langs and Elnady before Langs got set point with a solo block.

Momentum carried over for Kansas in the second set as the Jayhawks scored the first four points, built an 8-1 lead and never looked back as they won the set, 25-18. KU again hit the ball well with 13 kills against four errors and got four service aces, including a pair from Elnady for the first two points of the set.

The Jayhawks played from behind early in the third set as Miami scored the first two points and led by as many as three at 5-2 in the early going. KU scored four straight points to take the first lead of the set at 6-5 and following a 6-all tie, the Jayhawks took a lead they would not relinquish. Miami would stay within two points up until 18-16, but Kansas scored seven of the final 11 points – including three blocks – and put the match away at 25-20 on a kill by Elnady.

Bien led the Jayhawks with 12 kills and six digs, while Elnady had nine kills, seven digs and three service aces. Langs hit a team-high .438 with eight kills and 10 blocks, helping KU to a 13-7 advantage in blocks. Camryn Turner had 30 assists and seven digs to go along with four kills and Kennedy Farris led the Jayhawks with 11 digs.

As a team, Kansas hit .278 for the match with 40 kills and committed just 10 attack errors. The Jayhawks also had the advantage in service aces, 8-3, while Miami edged KU in digs, 41-39. KU’s defense held Miami to a .113 attack percentage, which included the Hurricanes hitting less than .100 in each of the first two sets.

With the win, the Jayhawks improve to 8-3 all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Bechard and the Jayhawks are now 12-10 all-time in the postseason, with a chance to improve that Friday night.

Redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady had a stellar season at the service line, breaking two school records. On September 17 against Omaha, Elnady recorded eight service aces, the most aces in a four-set match for the Jayhawks. Less than a month later on October 15 against Texas Tech, Elnady set the school record for aces in a five-set match with seven aces. The Cairo, Egypt native played in 100 sets, tallied 283 kills, along with 38 aces, 172 digs, 41 blocks and 18 digs during the 2022 campaign. Elnady earned a season-high 19 kills versus Iowa State on November 19, hitting .241.

After joining the Jayhawks in 2018, super-senior Rachel Langs has made a name for herself at Kansas. On November 5, Langs recorded her 500th career block against No. 11 Baylor in Waco, Texas, becoming one of five individuals to reach such a milestone at KU. During the match, Langs totaled five blocks and currently has 506 blocks in her career. The Fairview, Texas native has a list of accolades since her Kansas debut including three Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors, two Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors and one Rookie of the Week accolade. In 2019, Langs was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team and Big 12 All-Rookie Team in 2018.

After transferring from Florida for her final season, graduate transfer Lauren Dooley has played in all 104 sets for the Jayhawks. An integral part of the Kansas defense, Dooley has earned 115 blocks, averaging 1.11 blocks per set. In her solo season, the Plano, Texas native recorded 168 kills, 24 digs, 14 assists and 233.5 points. Dooley had a season-high 11 total blocks during the October 19 match at West Virginia. Dooley is hitting .400 with 1.62 kills per set and 2.25 points per set.&nbsp;

Sophomore Camryn Turner has tallied 16 double-doubles in 27 matches. Turner had double-doubles against LMU (8/27), Army (9/2), UConn (9/3), Kansas City (9/7), Lipscomb (9/15), Omaha (9/17), Kansas State (9/24, 11/2), Baylor (10/1, 11/5), Iowa State (10/7, 11/19), TCU (10/12), West Virginia (10/19, 11/12). Recently, Turner collected 40 assists and 12 digs against Iowa State on November 19. Prior to the NCAA tournament, Turner has tallied 2,515 assists in 104 sets, 97 kills, 272 digs, 55 blocks and 22 aces.

🏀 Butler hands K-State 1st loss behind Bates's double-double

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) —Longtime NFL quarterback John Hadl, who starred for his hometown Kansas Jayhawks before embarking on a professional career that included six Pro Bowl appearances and an All-Pro nod, died Wednesday. He was 82.

The university, where Hadl returned after his playing days as a coach and fundraiser, announced his death in a statement, citing his family. No cause was given.

"John Hadl had a generational impact on Kansas football," Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff said. "He was a once-in-a-lifetime Jayhawk student-athlete, a coach and mentor, a prolific fundraiser who developed profound relationships with countless, and the ultimate ambassador for KU. In short, our university and athletic program has been transformed by John and his legacy will forever be cemented. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with [wife] Diana and the Hadl family."

Hadl was a two-sport star at Lawrence High School, a short drive from the Kansas campus, but made his name on the football field for the Jayhawks. He led the NCAA in punting as a sophomore, set a record for longest punt of 94 yards that still stands, and until 2007, held the record for longest interception return with a 98-yarder.

Hadl played both halfback and quarterback his final two seasons, helping Kansas go 14-5-2 over the span. The two-time All-American finished his career by leading the Jayhawks to their first bowl win against Rice in the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl.

"Upon my arrival," current Kansas coach Lance Leipold said, "I heard instantly from people across the state about John's impact to this department, not just as a student-athlete and coach, but as someone who dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to the University of Kansas. His desire to enhance KU and make it as special as possible truly resonated with me."

Hadl was chosen 10th overall by the Detroit Lions in 1962 in the NFL draft and 24th overall by the San Diego Chargers in the AFL draft, where he chose to pursue his career. Hadl would spend 11 seasons with the Chargers, taking them to three AFL title games before the merger with the NFL, before finishing his career with the Packers, Rams and Oilers.

After retiring in 1977, Hadl returned to Kansas as an assistant, helping the Jayhawks to the 1981 Hall of Fame Bowl. He later coached for the Rams, the Broncos and the Los Angeles Express of the USFL before returning to Kansas in 1988, where he spent the next 30 years as a prolific fundraiser for the Williams Education Fund.

Hadl's No. 21 is one of three numbers retired by Kansas along with No. 48 of Gale Sayers and No. 42 of Ray Evans. In 2020, the school celebrated his legacy by unveiling a statue of Hadl outside the Anderson Family Football Complex.

"To be the head coach of this program," Leipold said, "and see his statue every day outside Anderson Family Football Complex is a firm reminder of the passion and love that John had for this program. Kelly and I send our condolences to the Hadl family and his loved ones."

 <li>Max Duggan is the second TCU student-athlete to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors, joining Trevone Boykin, who earned the award in 2014. Duggan is the first quarterback to earn the award since Kyler Murray (OU) in 2018.</li><li>Felix Anudike-Uzomah is the fifth K-State player to win Defensive Player of the Year, and the first since Jordan Willis in 2016. Arthur Brown (2012), Terence Newman (2002) and Mark Simoneau (1999) comprise the other Wildcats who have received the distinction.</li><li>Dillon Gabriel captured Oklahoma’s fifth Offensive Newcomer of the Year award, joining an esteemed list that includes Jalen Hurts (2019), Dede Westbrook (2015), Adrian Peterson (2004) and Josh Heupel (1999).&nbsp;</li><li>TCU’s Johnny Hodges became the second Horned Frog to win Defensive Newcomer of the Year, joining Ben Banogu (2017).</li><li>Richard Reese is the third Baylor player and first Baylor running back to be selected as Offensive Freshman of the Year, joining quarterbacks Charlie Brewer (2017) and Robert Griffin III (2008).</li><li>Kendal Daniels is the second consecutive Defensive Freshman of the Year from Oklahoma State, and the fourth winner from the school. Last season, Collin Oliver (2021) joined Shaun Lewis (2010) and Andre Sexton (2006) as Cowboys who have earned the distinction.&nbsp;</li><li>Derius Davis is the first TCU player to garner Special Teams Player of the Year.&nbsp;</li><li>Cooper Beebe joins Dalton Risner (2018) and B.J. Finney (2014) as Offensive Lineman of the Year from Kansas State.</li><li>Felix Anudike-Uzomah becomes the first two-time winner of Defensive Lineman of the Year since the inception of the award in 2006. It is the fifth time a Wildcat has been honored, joining Anudike-Uzomah’s previous award (2021), Jordan Willis (2016), Ryan Mueller (2013) and Meshak Williams (2012).</li><li>Sonny Dykes has been named Chuck Neinas Big 12 Coach of the Year. He is the only coach to win the award in their first year as head coach of the program. He and his dad, the late Spike Dykes (Texas Tech, 1996), are the only father-son duo in the Big 12 to win the award.</li><li>Oklahoma has won the most individual awards in the 27-year history of the Big 12 with 48. K-State is second (37), followed by Texas (32), Oklahoma State (25), Baylor (23), Iowa State (22), TCU (14), West Virginia (10), Kansas (8) and Texas Tech (8). &nbsp;</li>
