Max Duggan threw a completion a split second before a defender's helmet struck his facemask on a targeting call, sending the TCU quarterback's head snapping back and leaving him momentarily woozy on the ground.

The mobile Duggan took his share of collisions against Kansas State but finished the game and has No. 7 TCU alone in first place.

In a year of quarterback attrition, the Big 12 race could come down to how many are left standing, or who has a backup capable of shouldering the load. Most teams have lost their starting quarterback at some point this season. A few remain out, others have returned and the status of some for Saturday's games are a day-to-day observation.

Just as he's shaken off hard tackles, Duggan deferred questions about the recent pounding, instead pointing to the real battle in the trenches.

"My job's pretty easy. When you're a quarterback, you don't get hit too often," Duggan said after TCU beat Kansas State 38-28 on Saturday. "The guys up front, the guys blocking out on the defense, they're getting hit every play. Those guys are never complaining, never talking about their hits. So the least I can do is get up after a play."

Duggan might not be thriving had redshirt freshman Chandler Morris not sprained his left knee in the season opener. Despite being a three-year starter, Duggan lost the top position over the spring and summer to Morris. But Duggan has played so well that Morris has remained on the bench despite being available. Duggan has thrown 19 touchdown passes with one interception. His 181.8 efficiency rating is fifth in the nation.

While Duggan led TCU back from an 18-point deficit to beat Kansas State, the Wildcats are having their own quarterback issues.

Starter Adrian Martinez left after the first series with an undisclosed injury and did not return. Backup Will Howard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, then hurt his shoulder on a third-quarter running play. Howard left the game briefly but was brought back in after a third-string freshman threw an interception.

Coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday he's not sure whether Martinez will be available but Howard should be ready when Kansas State, tied for second place with Oklahoma State, prepares to host the Cowboys on Saturday.

Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders, playing through undisclosed injuries in the past few weeks, led the Cowboys to a comeback win over Texas on Saturday. Sanders is tied with Duggan for the Big 12 lead with 23 total touchdowns — seven more than anyone else.

"He's feeling better," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "He's not where he was. You can tell."

Quarterback injuries seem to have hit the Big 12 harder than other Power 5 conferences, although there are some notable season-ending injuries elsewhere, including Devin Leary at North Carolina State (pectoral muscle).

Some schools can't catch a break: Utah State has seen injuries to its top three quarterbacks, forcing one to end his college career, and Texas A&amp;M its top two.

Despite the frequency of quarterback visits to the training room, the Big 12 is on pace to challenge a high scoring mark under the current 10-team format that started in 2012. The league-wide average of 35.4 points scored is more than five points better than each of the past two seasons and the same as that averaged over the 2015 season.

One reason for the success is Kansas, which has far surpassed its scoring total for all of last season.

Jalon Daniels led Kansas to a 5-0 start, then injured a shoulder against TCU. The Jayhawks lost that game and the next two. Kansas now has an open week and no timetable has been set for Daniels' return. Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel returned from a concussion on Oct. 15 to help the Sooners snap a three-game losing streak. Both quarterbacks were injured in back-to-back weeks on plays by TCU linebacker Jamoi Hodge, whose hit on Gabriel was ruled targeting.

Quinn Ewers of Texas missed three games with a collarbone injury. Texas Tech has gone 3-3 since Tyler Shough injured a collarbone in the season opener. Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said Shough has been medically cleared and will be available to play against Baylor this week. Redshirt freshman Behren Morton has started the last two games, going 1-1.

Baylor's Blake Shapen sustained a head injury Oct. 13 in the third quarter at West Virginia but returned Saturday to lead the Bears to a win over Kansas. West Virginia's JT Daniels and Iowa State's Hunter Dekkers also have yet to miss a start.

By this point in the season, every coach must address a growing list of players who may or may not be available.

"Kansas State's not the only team that's beat up. That I know for a fact," Klieman said. "And so nobody's going to feel sorry for you. It's the 'next man up' mentality. And whoever is out there, we have confidence as a staff, we have confidence as a football team, that they're going to allow us and give us opportunity to be successful."

🏈 Big 12 QB attrition piles up; TCU's Duggan shrugs off hits

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez and Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell were among 15 players named finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, an award given to college football’s top scholar-athlete. Finalists are chosen from all levels of college football by the National Football Foundation and earn an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 and receive an additional $7,000 scholarship. Other finalists include Auburn kicker Anders Carlson, Stanford offensive lineman Walter Rouse and UTSA offensive lineman Ahofitu Maka.

HARROW, England (AP) — Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has proclaimed himself “ready to roll” despite a lingering hamstring injury ahead of Denver’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. Wilson was a limited participant in practice Wednesday at the Harrow School outside London. Coach Nathaniel Hackett was noncommittal, but the veteran quarterback was optimistic. Hackett held Wilson out of Sunday's 16-9 loss to the New York Jets because of a pulled hamstring. Wilson has only missed four games as a pro and is in the midst of his worst season. The Broncos are 2-5 despite an impressive defense.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles have acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears. Chicago gets a fourth-round pick in 2023 in return. The 32-year-old Quinn is off to a slow start with just one sack and three quarterback hits. But he broke Hall of Famer Richard Dent’s franchise record with 18 1/2 sacks last year in a resurgent season. The Eagles are the lone remaining undefeated team.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly hasn't been this excited going into a season in more than two decades. The Cyclones have preseason AP All-America forward Ashley Joens back for a fifth season. The Cyclones also have three other starters back after a school-record 28 wins last season. They are eighth in the preseason AP Top 25 poll and were tabbed by Big 12 coaches as a slight favorite over third-ranked Texas. The Longhorns won the Big 12 tournament last season and made it to the Elite Eight. Oklahoma was picked third, ahead of 12-time defending champion Baylor.

TAMPA, Fla, (AP) — Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner plans to keep Aaron Boone as his manager. Steinbrenner, speaking as he left the Yankees' player development complex., said he believes Boone is a very good manager and "I don’t see a change there.” Boone agreed last October to a three-year deal with a team option for 2025. Cleveland extended the Division Series to five games before New York was swept in four games by Houston in the ALCS. HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawk Volleyball team is headed to State!

Hutch defeated Goddard-Eisenhower in the championship game of their sub-state to punch their ticket to Salina for the 2nd straight year sweeping the tigers 25-14, 25-16.

Hutch also got the opening day sweep over Maize 25-16. 25-19 to advance to the championship game.

How passionate is Klieman about Howard? Klieman gave his longest answer all season in addressing Howard, what he means to the team, and his efforts as a quarterback. On Friday, a great example, he has no idea if he's going to play a snap at all, and on Friday, we're doing our meetings, and he's out on our game field with the net throwing and throwing and throwing, and working his own craft — not because he figured Adrian was going to play three plays, but just because he wants to continue to improve and to push it, so when his opportunity comes, whether it's last week, this week, or whenever it is, he'd be ready. That's the sign of a winner and a competitor and a sign of the culture we want here, that you have a kid that says, 'If I'm not the guy, I'm going to prepare like I am, and when that opportunity comes, I'm not missing it.' To watch him play last week, I was so excited for him, and every one of the guys on the team were excited for him. "Adrian is not out for the year. We still feel like we have three left with Will. It's why we didn't play him against South Dakota and Missouri, so we could be strategic about when he would play. He may not play this week. Adrian may be fine to play. I don't have any idea. But if he's not, Will is going to play, and then we still have two more games (to retain his redshirt season)."

The 5-foot-6, 176-pound native of Round Rock, Texas, had a streak of nine-straight games with a touchdown, an eight-game streak of 100-yard rushing performances, a career-high 170 rushing yards against Texas Tech, and he ranks 13th&nbsp;nationally with 106.3 rushing yards per game. He currently has 2,790 career rushing yards and needs just 29 more to pass Ell Roberson for No. 4 on the all-time rushing list at K-State. Vaughn reached a significant milestone this past Saturday against TCU: He became the eighth player in Big 12 history to reach 2,500 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career, becoming the quickest to do so. The 6-foot-1 native of Denton, Texas, who earned First Team All-Big 12 honors a year ago after leading the league in total offense (3,495) and total offense per game (268.8), is putting up even more impressive numbers in 2022. Through seven games, he ranks 12th in the FBS and first in the Big 12 in total offense (2,952), and seventh in the nation and first in the Big 12 in total offense per game (340.3). He has completed 58.8% of his passes for 2,030 yards and 15 touchdowns and four interceptions, and his 290.0 average passing yards ranks 16th&nbsp;nationally. He also has 80 carries for 352 yards and eight touchdowns. His 1,917 rushing yards are most among Oklahoma State quarterbacks in a career. Sanders threw for 391 yards against No. 22 Texas, giving him seven 300-yard passing performances in his career, tied for third in school history. "It's full, they do a good job with their students, and the atmosphere, and it's a great college environment," Gundy said. "Back then (in the 1980s), they had the old turf field and the painted Wildcat at the middle, which would rip your skin off, and it stayed that way all four of my years, and gosh, there was nobody at those games. "They've made as big of a transition in college football as anybody in my opinion from where it was back in the mid-90s. Coach Snyder came in 1989, so I don't think they got going up there until at least 1993, 1994 or 1995 when anybody started showing up probably. But that transition has been big. It's been great for conference, I'll put it that way."

He currently has 2,790 career rushing yards and needs just 29 more to pass Ell Roberson for No. 4 on the all-time rushing list at K-State. Vaughn reached a significant milestone this past Saturday against TCU: He became the eighth player in Big 12 history to reach 2,500 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career, becoming the quickest to do so. The 6-foot-1 native of Denton, Texas, who earned First Team All-Big 12 honors a year ago after leading the league in total offense (3,495) and total offense per game (268.8), is putting up even more impressive numbers in 2022. Through seven games, he ranks 12th in the FBS and first in the Big 12 in total offense (2,952), and seventh in the nation and first in the Big 12 in total offense per game (340.3). He has completed 58.8% of his passes for 2,030 yards and 15 touchdowns and four interceptions, and his 290.0 average passing yards ranks 16th&nbsp;nationally. FORT WORTH, Texas&nbsp;– The Kansas volleyball team fell to the TCU Horned Frogs 3-2 (17-25, 12-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-9) in a five-set thriller at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday evening.

The Jayhawks fell to 15-6 (5-4 Big 12) on the season, while the Horned Frogs advanced to 11-9 (6-3 Big 12).

Leading the Kansas offense was redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady with 13 kills, hitting .244, and super-senior Anezka Szabo with eight kills and hitting .176.

Sophomore Caroline Bien had 14 digs with seven kills. Freshman Brynn Kirsch contributed 13 digs to KU’s 45 dig total.

Kansas will take on the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday (October 30) for the Jayhawks for a Cure match in Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. The match will begin at 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast by ESPNU.

The women's race will start at 10 a.m. and the men's race will follow at 10:45 a.m. Sixteen teams will be competing.

Last season, the Blue Dragon women finished third in the race as a team with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/cocking_louise_gbqv">Louise Cocking</a>being crowned the regional champion. The Blue Dragon men did not post a team score last year but did have four runners finish in the top 50.

This season, the third-ranked Blue Dragon women have finished second at the Terry Masterson, finished as the top NJCAA team at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska, shattered many individual records at the Chili Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and took second at the Ollie Isom invite two weeks ago led by freshmen&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/larson_serenity_9809">Serenity Larson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/hoskinson_taylor_jjhw">Taylor Hoskinson</a>&nbsp;finishing third and fourth with freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/lambert_gracie_ynnn">Gracie Lambert</a>&nbsp;coming in at fifth.

👟 HutchCC: Blue Dragon Cross Country hosts Region VI Meet Friday

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team earned a Jayhawk West sweep of the Barton Cougars on Wednesday night and reached the 25-win plateau for the first time since 2017.

Freshman Taniya Golden posted a double-double and the Blue Dragons held Barton to .113 hitting as Hutchinson defeated the Cougars 25-16, 27-25, 25-17 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons completed the first season sweep of the Cougars since 2017.

Hutchinson improved to 25-10 overall and 12-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons complete the regular season on Friday with a trip to Butler. The Blue Dragons can finish no worse than third in the Jayhawk West and has a chance to finish second in the league.

Golden led the Blue Dragons with her second double-double of the season with a match-high 13 kills and 12 digs. Golden hit .216 on 37 attacks. She also had a season-high three service aces. Now with 373 kills for the season, Golden moved past Thais Franca for fifth place on the Blue Dragon freshman list for kills.

Sophomore Baylee Miller finished with 11 kills on .310 hitting with a season-high five blocks, four digs and one ace.

Freshman Anna Dean had 10 kills on .529 hitting. She had seven total blocks, including one solo stuff.

The Blue Dragons hit .179 as a team. The Dragons out-blocked the Cougars 10-7 and out-dug the Blue Dragons 55-50.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano finished with 22 assists and nine digs. Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 13 assists.

Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey had 15 digs to lead the Dragons. Harvey has eight matches with 15 or more digs this season.

Molly Norris had nine kills and Tasiah Nunnery had seven kills to lead Barton, which had 24 kills on .113 hitting.

SET 1: The Dragons jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a Harvey ace and Barton attack error. A Cougar block cut the Dragon lead to 10-7. A Golden kill pushed the Dragon lead back to five at 14-9. Golden dropped an ace to boost the Dragon lead to 17-10. The Dragons led by as many as 10 points in the second. Golden’s fourth kill of the set came on set point. The Dragons outhit the Cougars .185-.000.

SET 2: The Cougars had three early two-point leads. Hutchinson finally tied the set at 12 on a Blondie Penaflor service ace. The Dragons looked to be pulling away when a Miller kill gave Hutchinson a 20-17 lead. With Hutchinson leading 23-21, Barton scored three in a row and had a set point at 24-23, but the Dragons stayed alive with a Cougar service error. The Dragons fought off two set points against. Miller’s kill tied the set at 25-all and the Cougars were called for a ball-handling error and Dean closed the set with a solo block.

SET 3: The Cougars led 4-1, but a 10-point Harvey service run helped the Dragons take control of the set. A Dean kill capped the run with an 11-4 lead. Leading 12-7, the Dragons went on a 7-1 run to lead 20-9 after a Golden kill. The Cougars got back within seven points, but Dean had a kill on Hutchinson’s second match point to complete the sweep.

MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian court has upheld the nine-year prison sentence handed to American basketball star Brittney Griner for drug possession, rejecting her appeal.

Griner, an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

The Moscow region court ruled Tuesday to uphold the sentence. In the ruling the court stated, however, that the time Griner will have to serve in prison will be recalculated with her time in pre-trial detention taken into account. One day in pre-trial detention will be counted as 1.5 days in prison, so the basketball player will have to serve around eight years in prison.

Griner is taking part in the session held at the Moscow Regional Court via video call from a penal colony outside Moscow where she is being held.

Griner’s February arrest came at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington, just days before Russia sent troops into Ukraine. At the time, Griner was returning to Russia, where she played during the U.S. league’s offseason.

Griner admitted that she had the canisters in her luggage, but testified that she had inadvertently packed them in haste and that she had no criminal intent. Her defense team presented written statements that she had been prescribed cannabis to treat pain.

The nine-year sentence was close to the maximum of 10 years, and Griner’s lawyers argued after the conviction that the punishment was excessive. They said in similar cases defendants have received an average sentence of about five years, with about a third of them granted parole.

Before her conviction, the U.S. State Department declared Griner to be “wrongfully detained” — a charge that Russia has sharply rejected.

Reflecting the growing pressure on the Biden administration to do more to bring Griner home, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken took the unusual step of revealing publicly in July that Washington had made a “substantial proposal” to get Griner home, along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage.

Blinken didn’t elaborate, but The Associated Press and other news organizations have reported that Washington has offered to exchange Griner and Whelan for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. and once earned the nickname the “merchant of death.”

The White House said it has not yet received a productive response from Russia to the offer.

Russian diplomats have refused to comment on the U.S. proposal and urged Washington to discuss the matter in confidential talks, avoiding public statements.

In September, U.S. President Joe Biden met with Cherelle Griner, the wife of Brittney Griner, as well as the player’s agent, Lindsay Colas. Biden also sat down separately with Elizabeth Whelan, Paul Whelan’s sister.

The White House said after the meetings that the president stressed to the families his “continued commitment to working through all available avenues to bring Brittney and Paul home safely.”

The Biden administration carried out a prisoner swap in April, with Moscow releasing Marine veteran Trevor Reed in exchange for the U.S. releasing a Russian pilot, Konstantin Yaroshenko, convicted in a drug trafficking conspiracy.

Moscow also has protested the arrest of another Russian currently in U.S. custody, Alexander Vinnik, who was accused of laundering billions of dollars via an illicit cryptocurrency exchange. Vinnik had been in custody in Greece after being arrested there in 2017 at U.S. request before being extradited to the U.S. in August. It wasn’t clear if Russia might demand Vinnik’s release as part of a potential swap.

CHARLES, Mo.– No. 5 Kansas men’s basketball played No. 23 Illinois in a scrimmage at Hyland Performance Arena on the campus of Lindenwood University Saturday afternoon.

The two teams played one 20-minute period then three 10-minute sessions followed by four four-minute situational periods. The scrimmage lasted 3:20 and concluded with the two teams playing against specific situations, mainly zones defenses.

“It was competitive,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “We had some guys step up and make some plays. We played a ton of situations in which the games came down to the last 30 seconds. That was good for us because we haven’t done much of that yet.

“Our best players played pretty good, but we’ve got to have some of the young guys step up and do better,” Self added.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were staring at an early 10-point hole, on the road and against one of the best defenses in the NFL, yet managed to not only turn things around but roar to a 44-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

It changed the entire complexion of the first half of the season for Kansas City.

Rather than heading into their bye tied atop the AFC West with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs improved to 5-2 and are just a half-game back of Buffalo for the best record in the conference. And a valid argument could be made that the first seven games were far more difficult than what Kansas City will face down the stretch.

Maybe hosting a fifth straight AFC title game isn't quite the longshot it seemed after a stunning loss at Indianapolis.

“We had a tough schedule going into the bye. We knew that going into the season,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw bounced back from an early interception to throw for 423 yards and three scores against the 49ers.

Of the 10 games the Chiefs have after their bye, six are against teams that are .500 or worse, and only the Titans (4-2) are more than a game above the break-even mark. That includes the Jaguars (2-5), two games against the Broncos (2-5), a trip to Houston (1-4-1) and the Raiders (2-4) to finish the regular season.

“Obviously we lost a couple of games that we wanted to win,” Mahomes said, “but when you look back on it and you're 5-2 and you're first in the AFC West, you can't ask to be in a better position. So now we have to recalibrate, get off our feet, get our bodies back and then learn, because when we come back in this next stretch, we're going to be ready to go.”

The Chiefs could be in their best shape since training camp, too.

Defensive end Mike Danna should be fully recovered from a calf injury. Defensive back Rashad Fenton should be back from a hamstring injury. First-round pick Trent McDuffie, who has practiced the past two weeks but has not played since a hamstring injury landed the cornerback on injured reserve after the opener, also is expected back. And there's a chance the Chiefs will get backup tight end Blake Bell from IR and Lucas Niang off the physically unable to perform list.

“It's a good time (for the bye),” coach Andy Reid said. “I think it comes where we could afford to get a little bit healthier in some spots, in particular the corner spot — as long as the guys are out there and being safe. And that's kind of my primary concern right now. To get back on time. That's always important.”

The Chiefs signed JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling to help replace Tyreek Hill, and for the first time Sunday, they delivered on their promise together. The Niners dropped back-to-back games despite getting a boost from the addition this week of&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/49ers/status/1584281609674510337?s=20&amp;t=5F0B698sMhxy5QcbxreI6A">running back Christian McCaffrey</a>, who had 62 yards on 10 scrimmage touches in his San Francisco debut.

But San Francisco settled for three field goals and came up empty on another chance when Jimmy Garoppolo threw an interception at the goal line before Kansas City ran away with it in the second half.

The Chiefs took control with back-to-back touchdown drives to start the second half. They started the opening drive of the third quarter at the San Francisco 33 following a 48-yard kick return by Isiah Pacheco and a personal foul on Jauan Jennings. Edwards-Helaire scored three players later to make it 21-13.

Kansas City made it 28-13 when Mahomes found Watson for the TD one play after Jerick McKinnon gained 34 yards on a third-and-20 screen pass.

Mahomes then answered a TD pass from Garoppolo to George Kittle by hitting Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a 57-yard pass on third-and-11 to set up Hardman's second TD run.

Mahomes found Smith-Schuster on another third down play for the final TD.

Both teams blew some scoring chances in the final two minutes of the first half. Jaylon Moore was called for a false start for San Francisco on a field goal attempt, leading the Niners to punt.

But Skyy Moore muffed the punt and San Francisco recovered at the 12-yard line, only to give the ball right back when Garoppolo was intercepted by rookie Joshua Williams.

The Chiefs drove inside the 10 but had a touchdown negated by a chop block and then Harrison Butker missed a 39-yard field goal try. Kansas City led 14-13 at the break.

The Niners honored their alumni at the game, welcoming back the 2012 NFC championship team and presenting Bryant Young with his Hall of Fame ring. Coach Jim Harbaugh came back for the 10th anniversary of his team that went to the Super Bowl. It was his first time back with the 49ers since his the “mutual” parting following the 2014 season.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was not among the players who returned.
