Hutchinson Community College softball freshman third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/sandoval_olivia_qojo">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;and super-sophomore relief pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/weitze_kiersten_naju">Kierstan Weitze</a>&nbsp;are both off to tremendous starts to the 2023 season and on Tuesday, both were honored by the Jayhawk Conference as the league's Division I Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Sandoval hit safely in all four games and Weitze earned two pitching wins as No. 17 Hutchinson roared out of the gate to 4-0 start to the season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK –&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/sandoval_olivia_qojo">Olivia Sandoval</a> The freshman from Newton had a tremendous debut for the Blue Dragons and she didn't slow down.

Sandoval became the first Blue Dragon since Izzy Godinez in in 2018 to have a four-hit game in the season opener, which was January 27 against the Ottawa JV in Ottawa. Sandoval was on base in all five plate appearances with a double, three singles and a walk. Her five RBIs are the first season opener with five or more RBIs in the game since Kiara DeCrane's six RBIs in the 2018 season opener.

Sandoval is off to a hot start with 10 hits and 16 RBIs out of the No. 2 slot in the batting order for the Blue Dragons. Against the McPherson JV on Sunday, she had a combined five hits and eight RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of the McPherson JV.

She hit safely in four straight games and is slugging .750. She is the first Blue Dragon in team history with two five-RBI games in the first four games of the season.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – KIERSTAN WEITZE The third-year sophomore from Spring Hill, Kansas, came out of the bullpen and pitched the Blue Dragons to two victories in the first two weeks of the season.

The Blue Dragons were behind early in each of her appearances, but Weitze came in and did a solid job in both appearances.

Weitze worked three innings out of the bullpen and allowed three hits and one unearned run with a pair of walks and four strikeouts against Ottawa. She followed that performance with 3 2-3 innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts.

Weitze worked 6 2-3 innings with nine strikeouts and two walks. She allowed seven hits and one unearned run to earn her first KJCCC Pitcher of the Week honor.

The Cyclones missed a chance to move into a first-place tie with No. 5 Texas, which lost at Kansas on Monday night. Jaren Holmes led the Cyclones with 18 points.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Keyonte George had 23 points and Adam Flagler scored 20 as 14th-ranked Baylor held on to beat Oklahoma 82-72. Flagler scored 14 points in the final 13:11 of the game, the first of those being a jumper that put Baylor back ahead to stay. To make room on the 40-man roster, St. Louis designated right-hander James Naile for assignment on the Missouri native’s 30th birthday. The 28-year-old Misiewicz split last season between the Mariners and Kansas City. He went 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 29 innings. Misiewicz was expendable when the Royals bolstered their bullpen with a series of recent moves.

Sports Headlines for Thursday

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The Blue Dragons fell behind early en route to a 90-68 loss on Wednesday inside Nellis Hall at No. 18 Coffeyville. Hutchinson (15-10, 9-10 KJCCC) never had a lead in the game, as the hot-shooting Red Ravens set and controlled the tempo for the entire 40 minutes. Coffeyville shot 53 percent from the floor, while knocking down nine three-pointers in the process.&nbsp; The Blue Dragons knocked down 40 percent of their shots, but the big discrepancy in the contest was the foul shots. Coffeyville got to the free throw line 23 times in the game, knocking down 17 of those, while Hutchinson got to the line just eight times, connecting on five.&nbsp; Aaron Franklin led Hutchinson in scoring with 17 points. He pulled down six rebounds. Dadrevius Weathers chipped in 11 and Steele Gaston-Chapman finished with 10 for the Blue Dragons.&nbsp; Hutchinson committed 14 turnovers in the game, leading to 17 Red Raven points. Coffeyville finished with 11 turnovers, but the Blue Dragons only turned the miscues into five points. The Blue Dragons return to the Sports Arena on Saturday when they host No. 14 Dodge City (18-6, 14-4). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The Blue Dragons erased an 18-point deficit in the second half to come from behind and defeat the Coffeyville Red Ravens 68-63 on Wednesday inside Nellis Hall.

Hutchinson fell behind 53-35 with just over 3 minutes remaining in the third period, and then trailed 56-42 entering the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

That is when the Blue Dragons would turn it on, outscoring the Red Ravens 26-7 in the final frame to complete the comeback and secure the second-largest comeback for HutchCC under head coach John Ontjes.

The Blue Dragons were led by Monae Duffy's 23 points and nine rebounds. Mya Williams added 15 points on just 1-of-6 from the floor, while knocking down all 12 free-throw attempts she took.

Hutchinson would go 23-of-29 at the foul stripe, including 17-of-22 in the second half alone. The Blue Dragons took care of the basketball, committing nine turnovers, while the Red Ravens turned the ball over 16 times.

The Blue Dragons are now 19-6 overall, 13-6 in KJCCC play. HutchCC maintains 4th place in the conference standings with the win, and now has a two-game lead on the Red Ravens after completing the season sweep.

🏀 WBB: Second half comeback lifts Blue Dragons over Coffeyville

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson High basketball teams split with Goddard Eisenhower at the Salthawk Activity Center on Tuesday night with the Lady Tigers owned the 4th quarter to pull away from Hutchinson to win 55 to 44. 

The Hutch High boys continued their winning ways with a 75 to 58 victory over Eisenhower in the late contest.

It was the final 2:07 of the 4th quarter with Eisenhower leading 42 to 40 when Hutchinson, who had possession of the ball, was hit with a technical foul on the Salthawk bench that proved costly. The Tigers promptly hit 2 free throws, plus received possession of the ball and then put together a 13 to 2 run to close out the game 55 to 44.

That play ended up being a potential 6 point turnaround and Eisenhower handed the Salthawks only their 4th defeat of the season.&nbsp;

Hutch was led by Senior guard Josie McLean with 12 points including back to back 3 point shots in the first quarter. Aliyah Greed added 11 and Grace Posch had 8. Libby Jackson chipped in 7 and Hannah Ames with 6 points rounded out the Salthawk scoring.

Eisenhower was led by shooting guard Addison Verbeck's 23 points including going 8 for 8 from the line for the night and hitting two key 3 point baskets in the 4th quarter to seal the win.

&nbsp;Eisenhower goes to 10-5 with the win and the Salthawks drop to 11-4. Hutchinson hosts Maize on Friday night at the SAC.

Hutch High got another monster night out of Garrett Robertson with six 3 pt baskets from the senior for 18 points.&nbsp; Combine that with his eight threes on Friday night in Salina and it's clear that Robertson is on a roll at the right time of the season.&nbsp; Robertson was aided in the cause by Wade Meyer's 17 points. The Salthawks scored 26 third quarter points to blow the game open. Robertson hit 4 treys in that quarter alone.&nbsp;

Hutchinson had 12 players see action and 11 scored. The reserves played the entire 4th quarter and Hutchinson won comfortably 75 to 58.

Along with Robertson's 18 and Meyer's 17, the Salthawks got scoring from Terrell King with 8, 6 points each from Nic Lange and Julian Smith. Jay Lewis and Jax Heneha contributed 5 points apiece, Brayden Rodriquez added 4 and the trio Devon Spiller, Dauntay King and Daylee VanSyckle had 2 points each.

Eisenhower was led by senior guards Jaden Roth and Carson Roy who had 16 points and 14 points respectively. Pierce Blue added 7, and Arjay Daracan and Chase George added 5 points a piece.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Five Wildcats scored in double figures, including a game-high 18 points from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/markquis-nowell/9650">Markquis Nowell</a>, as No. 12/11 Kansas State snapped a 2-game losing streak with a near wire-to-wire 82-61 victory over No. 19/17 TCU on Tuesday night before a crowd of 8,667 at Bramlage Coliseum. Nowell also dished out a game-high 7 assists, giving him 187 for the season, which broke the K-State single-season school record of 186 set by&nbsp;Steve Henson&nbsp;in 1987-88. His total ranks third nationally in Division I. In addition, his 18 points helped him eclipse 1,700 in his college career, which spans 119 games at Little Rock and K-State. The win helped K-State (19-5, 7-4 Big 12) keep pace in the Big 12 race, moving into a tie with No. 9/8 Kansas for third place, just one game back of No. 5/5 Texas and a half-game back of No. 11/13 Iowa State. The 19-5 start ties the 2012-13 and 2018-19 teams for the second-best in the last 50 seasons. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh is expected to leave the Biden administration to run the National Hockey League Players' Association. That's according to two people familiar with his plans. The hockey players' union has been searching for a new executive director to take over for Don Fehr. A serious fan of the Boston Bruins, Walsh showed an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport in videos posted online during his tenure from 2014 to 2021 as mayor of Boston. Walsh's departure would make him the first of President Joe Biden's Cabinet secretaries to leave.

Two people with knowledge of the situation say Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will visit the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday. They spoke condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to comment publicly. One person termed the visit as "exploratory in nature." Saints coach Dennis Allen was the Raiders' coach when the club selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Fresno State. Allen coached Carr for only four games before he was fired that year.

Mat Ishbia to AP: Suns 'will be one of best places to work'

Mat Ishbia says his first major project as owner of the Phoenix Suns will be to listen to employees and figure out what problems they've faced. After that, he'll start fixing. The tenure of embattled Robert Sarver as owner of the NBA's Suns and WNBA's Phoenix Mercury officially ended Tuesday. That's when Ishbia — the chairman, president and chief executive of United Wholesale Mortgage, plus a member of Michigan State's NCAA championship team in 2000 — took over. He will be governor, while brother Justin Ishbia will be alternate governor. Mat Ishbia told The Associated Press he plans to make adjustments in order to make the Suns "one of the best places to work."

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Senior&nbsp;Markquis Nowell&nbsp;was announced as a Top 10 candidate for the 2023 Bob Cousy Award by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday (February 7).

The award, which annually honors the top point guard in Division I men’s basketball, is named after former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard&nbsp;Bob Cousy, who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971.

Nowell joined on the list by fellow Big 12 player – TCU’s&nbsp;Mike Miles, Jr.&nbsp;– along with Detroit Mercy’s&nbsp;Antonie Davis, Marquette’s&nbsp;Tyler Kolek, Memphis&nbsp;Kendric Davis, Oral Roberts’&nbsp;Max Abmas, Penn State’s&nbsp;Jalen Pickett, UCLA’s&nbsp;Tyger Campbell&nbsp;and Xavier’s&nbsp;Souley Boum.

K-State fans can support Nowell’s candidacy for the award by participating in Fan Voting starting Friday, Feb. 10 on&nbsp;<a href="http://www.hoophallawards.com/" target="_blank">hoophallawards.com</a>. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.

He is one of just three active Division I players to total more than 1,500 points, 500 assists and 200 steals in a career.

Nowell ranks third nationally in assists/game (7.8 apg.) and total assists (180), while he is among the top-35 in 5 other categories, including 15th&nbsp;in free throws made (117) and steals/game (2.3 spg.), 17th&nbsp;in total steals (52), 25th&nbsp;in minutes/game (35.6) and 35th&nbsp;in free throw percentage.  🏀 MBB: K-States' Nowell Named Top 10 Candidate for Bob Cousy Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs activated running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire from injured reserve Monday and placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on the list for the second time as they finalize their roster for the Super Bowl.

Edwards-Helaire, a 2020 first-round pick, has been out since sustaining a high ankle sprain during a win over the Chargers on Nov. 20. He was designated to return on Jan. 17, opening a three-week window in which he could be activated.

Edwards-Helaire started the first six games of the season before ceding time to seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco, who has become one of the Chiefs' breakout stars. Edwards-Helaire has run 71 times for 302 yards and three touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 151 yards and three more scores this season.

The emergence of Pacheco, along with veteran Jerick McKinnon, took pressure off the Chiefs to activate Edwards-Helaire before he was ready. Pacheco ran for 830 yards and five TDs during the regular season along with 121 combined rushing yards in playoff wins over Jacksonville and Cincinnati, while McKinnon scored 10 combined touchdowns in the regular season.

Hardman, who will be a free agent after the season, initially hurt his pelvis Nov. 6 during a game against the Titans. He was activated from IR on Jan. 4 but struggled to get healthy enough to appear in games, missing the Chiefs' regular-season finale against the Raiders and their divisional win over the Jaguars.

He finally suited up for the AFC title game against the Bengals, and he ran a couple of jet sweeps while catching two passes for 10 yards. It was while getting tackled on his second reception that Hardman reinjured the pelvis.

Hardman was among three wide receivers hurt in the game, forcing the Chiefs to use a patchwork group down the stretch.

JuJu Smith-Schuster had one catch for 7 yards before inflammation in his knee forced him to the sideline, and Kadarius Toney had one catch for 9 yards before spraining his ankle while attempting to make a cut.

Neither participated in practice last week before the team departed Sunday for Phoenix, though coach Andy Reid expressed optimism that they would be available for the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs also should get back wide receiver Justin Watson, who was inactive for the AFC title game because of an illness.

“(Smith-Schuster) is in a good place,” Reid said. “The main thing is that we let that calm down. And right now, it's doing great, so very optimistic right now. And his want-to is all in there. But we'll just see where it goes.”

Sports Headlines for Tuesday

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dajuan Harris Jr. was willing to acknowledge that Kansas was facing something rare when fifth-ranked and Big 12-leading Texas arrived at Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night: a must-win game.

The defending national champs played like it.

Gradey Dick scored 21 points, Harris had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, and the ninth-ranked Jayhawks held on after blowing a 14-point first-half lead to beat the Longhorns 88-80 and tighten the league race.

Kevin McCullar Jr. added 16 points, Joseph Yesufu scored 14 off the bench and KJ Adams finished with 10, helping the Jayhawks (19-5, 7-4) overcome an off night from Jalen Wilson. The league's leading scorer at 21.5 points per game battled foul trouble and was held to just two, ending his streak of 25 straight double-figure games.

“We knew we had to come in here and get a win,” said Dick, who had the Jayhawks' only two 3-pointers. “The big thing, just in preparation for the week, was coming out with energy. When we do that, we're a scary team."

The Jayhawks needed everyone's help holding off the Longhorns' Marcus Carr.

The Minnesota transfer, who had a game-high 29 points, kept answering Kansas baskets down the stretch. His 3-pointer got the Longhorns within 77-68 with 2:25 left, three free throws made it 78-71 with 1:31 to go, and his three-point play got the Longhorns (19-5, 8-3) within 86-80 with 23.5 seconds remaining.

Texas quickly fouled Dick at the other end, and his free throw with 18 seconds left helped to put the game away.

“It was as close to a must-win as you could have this early in the season to win the league,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “You go down three games with seven left, you’d have to win out and get a lot of help from others. Now, we still have as hard a schedule as everybody, but we can kind of control our own destiny where if we play well, we have a shot.”

Timmy Allen finished with 18 points for the Longhorns. Sir'Jabari Rice had 12 before fouling out.

“It was their night tonight in terms of what they got done,” Texas interim coach Rodney Terry said.

The Longhorns have made a habit of overcoming double-digit deficits: 18 down to beat TCU, 12 down to beat Texas Tech and 14 down to beat No. 12 Kansas State last Saturday in a game played just down the road.

So it wasn't that surprising when Texas dug another 14-point hole Monday night.

Just like the Longhorns did in Manhattan, though, they began to rally. Texas shook off 10 first-half turnovers to get within 42-35 by the break, then kept coming in the second half. Hunter hit a 3-pointer, Carr added a couple of buckets and it was 43-all when Self called a timeout to slow Texas' momentum.

Unlike the Horned Frogs, Red Raiders and Wildcats, the Jayhawks rose to the challenge.

McCullar's three-point play while they were clinging to a 49-48 lead gave them a boost, and Dick added a couple of free throws. But it was back-to-back buckets by Harris, who is known more as a distributor than as a scorer, that pushed the lead to 58-50 with about 12 minutes to go.

Texas closed within 66-60 but, after the Jayhawks pulled down two offensive boards, Dick hit another 3-pointer. And when Yesufu bookended a couple of free throws by Harris, the lead had stretched to 75-62 with 3 minutes to go.

The Jayhawks were able to fend off Carr and the Longhorns from there.

“Give those guys credit. They came in and played at a very high level,” Terry said, “and we knew that would be the case.”

The Jayhawks were missing several backups. Zack Clemence has a hurt knee, Bobby Pettiford Jr. is dealing with a hamstring injury and Zuby Ejiofor a foot injury. Kyle Cuffe Jr. (knee) and Cam Martin (shoulder) also were out.

“I thought the bench was great. As good as they've been all year,” Self said. “We had nine guys we could put in the game.”

Texas has struggled to get off to good starts this season, and it seemed the energy the Longhorns expended climbing back into Monday night's game was missing by the end. Carr tried to carry them but he needed more help.

Kansas got the production it needed from the bench. Yesufu provided the scoring pop but big man Ernest Udeh Jr. and guard MJ Rice, both seldom-used freshmen, also provided important minutes for the Jayhawks.

Texas heads home after its Sunflower State swing to play West Virginia on Saturday.

Kansas has a two-game trip next with Oklahoma on Saturday and Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

🏀 MBB: No. 9 Kansas blows lead, then holds off No. 5 Texas

LINDSBORG, Kan. —&nbsp;Bethany College is celebrating the completion of a $2.8 million fundraising campaign for the Coach Ted K. Kessinger Family Stadium project. &nbsp;

"I have heard countless stories of how Coach K has impacted people's lives all over the country,” Jacob Spilker, Vice President of Advancement and Alumni Engagement, said. “It is incredible that so many people have helped honor him this way." &nbsp;

Ted K. Kessinger was the head football coach of Bethany College from 1976 to 2003. He was enshrined in the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 2010.

During Kessinger's tenure, the team amassed a division-leading record of 219-57-1 with no losing seasons for a winning percentage of .792. &nbsp;

"It is with excitement and gratitude that Bethany College has made this commitment," Ted. K. Kessinger said. &nbsp;

The stadium will be used by the football team, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's track and field teams. 

Additionally, Smoky Valley Middle and High School will utilize these facilities for their football and track teams. &nbsp;

Bethany College said it will be a monumental tribute to Coach Kessinger's remarkable successes and devotion to his student-athletes. &nbsp;

"A heartfelt thank you to all donors who have invested in this project,” Laura Moreno, Dean of Athletics, said. “We look forward to moving forward with construction and seeing these plans come to fruition! Rockar Stockar! Go, Swedes!" &nbsp;

The Bethany College Athletics Department is grateful to all the donors who supported the cause and contributed to honoring Ted K. Kessinger's career as Head Football Coach and his remarkable impact on student-athletes.&nbsp;

PHOENIX (AP) — A few minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes landed in Phoenix, the pilot hung a “Chiefs Kingdom” flag out of the window as players, coaches and staff got off the plane and walked across the runway. About an hour later, it was the Philadelphia Eagles who arrived in Arizona, with an “It’s a Philly Thing” flag fluttering in the runway as quarterback Jalen Hurts, coach Nick Sirianni and others made their way to a fleet of buses. Super Bowl 57 is just one week away. The Chiefs will face the Eagles on Feb. 12 in Glendale, Arizona.

Reid has helped the Chiefs to seven straight AFC West titles, four conference titles and one Super Bowl win. They have a chance at a second next Sunday against the Eagles. Lurie got his Super Bowl with Reid's former offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, but eventually fired Pederson. Now he has Nick Sirianni, who got the Eagles to the wild-card round last season and the Super Bowl this season.

The team says he'll be sidelined but aren't sure for how long. Curry is averaging 29.4 points per game this season. He won’t play Monday against Oklahoma City. He originally hurt his leg on Thursday and left Saturday’s game against Dallas in the third quarter after the leg appeared to buckle as he played defense.

DALLAS (AP) — All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving is being traded by the Brooklyn Nets. The team has struck a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. That's according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team had announced the move. The Mavericks will trade Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and a package of draft picks to the Nets. The blockbuster trade ends Irving's pairing with Kevin Durant before it ever had much of a chance to click. Dallas also gets Markieff Morris in the deal.

Rose was 9 under in the 19 holes he played Sunday in the weather-delayed AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That gives him a two-shot lead going to the Monday finish and a good chance to win for the first time in four years. Rose still has the back nine to play. He leads by two over Denny McCarthy, Peter Malnati and Brendon Todd. The day featured rain, wind, hail and sunshine, sometimes all in one hour. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers won the pro-am.

There were only five cautions in last year’s race.

PHOENIX (AP) — A few minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes landed in Phoenix, the pilot hung a “Chiefs Kingdom” flag out of the window as players, coaches and staff got off the plane and walked across the runway. About an hour later, it was the Philadelphia Eagles who arrived in Arizona, with an “It’s a Philly Thing” flag fluttering in the runway as quarterback Jalen Hurts, coach Nick Sirianni and others made their way to a fleet of buses.
