EL DORADO – The Hutchinson Community College ended the 2022 regular season on a tough note as the Butler Grizzlies swept the Blue Dragons on Friday at the Power Plant.

The Blue Dragons lost 25-13, 25-14, 25-12 as Butler swept the regular-season series for the second-straight season.

Hutchinson completes the regular season 25-11 and 12-4 in the Jayhawk West, which puts Hutchinson as the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament next week. The Blue Dragons will play host to an opening-round match on Wednesday. Official pairings will be announced soon.

Butler, which clinched the No. 1 seed for the Region VI Tournament and a share of the Jayhawk West title, took early control of all three sets from the Blue Dragons.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/golden_taniya_58dk">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;led the Dragon with 10 kills and two aces. Turpin was the top individual player for the Blue Dragons, coming in 36th place with a time of 27:21.81 in the men's 8,000-meter race. Turpin was the top Blue Dragon runner to finish for the first time this season.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2022-23/bios/bentsink_douwe_usx0">Douwe Bentsink</a>&nbsp;finished in 38th place, clocking in at 27:32.00. NJCAA Division I top-ranked Colby won the regional title with runners finishing in first, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, 10th, and 13th.

👟 Turpin paces Dragon Men at Region VI Championships

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Powered by three runners finishing in the Top 6, the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team won both the Region VI and Jayhawk West team championships on Friday at Fun Valley.

The Blue Dragons edged Cloud County for both regional titles, winning the Region VI crown by eight points after scoring 54 points. The Dragons won the league title with 43 points, a seven-point win over the Thunderbirds.

Hutchinson won its first-ever Division I Region VI championship and second overall in program history. The Blue Dragons also won the regional title in 2001 as a Division II program. That team went on to win a national championship. The Dragons also won their second conference title, the first since 2018.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/larson_serenity_9809">Serenity Larson</a>&nbsp;led the strong performance by the front of the Blue Dragon lineup. Larson finished in third with a time of 18:49.09 on Fun Valley's 5,000-meter course. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/cocking_louise_gbqv">Louise Cocking</a>&nbsp;posted her best race of the season and finished fourth with a time of 19:00.70. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/hoskinson_taylor_jjhw">Taylor Hoskinson</a>&nbsp;crossed the finish line sixth and clocking in at 19:20.58. Freshmen&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/baetz_courtney_njzm">Courtney Baetz</a>&nbsp;had a career-best time of 20:51.09 and came up big for the Blue Dragons as the fifth runner that counted toward the team score. It was the first time Baetz finished as a Top-5 runner for the Blue Dragons. Baetz finished 30th overall.

Fulmer finished 35th with a time of 20:57.17 and Grauer finished 36th at 21:01.99.

The Blue Dragon women will compete at the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida. The championship meet will be on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Apalachee Regional Park with the women's race scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. ET,

👟 Blue Dragon Women capture region, KJCCC titles

State tournament weekend began with one unbeaten left in the state. Day One ended with zero unbeatens left. Class 4A No. 1 Andale suffered its first loss of the season in its opening match of pool play at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, knocked off by the only team to enter the state tournaments with a losing record, Bishop Miege. The Stags, who beat Andale in the 2020 Class 4A state championship match, served notice to the Indians right away in 2022, taking a 25-23, 25-21 victory. Not only had Andale entered the match without a loss, the Indians had only been taken to three sets once this season, by 5A qualifier Andover Central. But Miege, hardended by a demanding regular-season schedule, ended the Indians’ bid for perfection. But the quest for a second straight title isn’t over for Andale. The Indians bounced back to roll past Rock Creek (25-11, 25-10) and Paola (25-14, 25-19) to finish pool play and earn a semifinal berth. Andale (41-1) will take on Pool II winner and rival Circle (37-4), which went 3-0 without dropping a set in its pool and along the way gave head coach Shelly Nibarger her 900th&nbsp;career victory. Now the task is finishing on Saturday for Rural (43-1), which took an unblemished record into last year’s semifinals before getting upset by Blue Valley West. Rural ended up taking fourth. This year’s trek to the program’s eighth state championship begins with a 9 a.m. semifinal showdown with Mill Valley (32-9), which went 2-1 in the opposite pool of Rural. The Jaguars bounced back from a tourney-opening loss to Blue Valley North to beat Free State 26-24, 25-20 and Wichita Northwest 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 to earn its semifinal berth. But it took a heck of a comeback by Seaman to send the defending champions home. In a match to determine the runner-up spot in Pool II behind St. James Academy, Lansing topped the Vikings 25-17 in the first set and led 22-18 in the second set before Seaman mustered a rally. The Vikings tied the match at 23-23 and fought off match point to score three straight points for a 26-24 win in the second set. The momentum stayed firmly on Seaman’s side in the final set as the Vikings took control early and never looked back, winning the set 25-12 to advance to the semifinals and end Lansing’s tournament. St. James went 3-0 in pool play, fighting off Lansing in a three-set opener (22-25, 25-15, 25-14) before handling Saman (25-17, 25-20) and Maize South (25-023, 25-18). The Rams bounced back from a loss to defending champion Olathe Heritage Christian in their first pool match, winning their next two to reach the semifinals for the first time. Riverton swept Eureka (25-13, 25-13) and Goodland (25-23, 25-22) to earn their berth. Their opponent in Saturday’s 1 p.m. semifinals is making a little history of its own. Top-seeded Nemaha Central swept through its pool with a trio of straight set wins and will take a school-record 45-1 record into the semifinals against Riverton (38-3). The trip to the semifinals is the first since 2017 for the Thunder, who survived tough pool battles with Smoky Valley (26-24, 25-22), Beloit (25-22, 25-18) and Cheney (25-23, 25-22). But that battle was merely to decide the top seed from the pool with both teams already having qualified for the semifinals. Smith Center bounced back from a 25-19 loss in the first set to the Teutons to take the next two 25-16, 27-25 to win the pool. The Lady Red (39-4) will take on Jefferson County North (32-9) in Saturday’s 9 a.m. semifinal after also handling Valley Heights 25-12, 25-17 and Garden Plain 25-16, 25-13. Hillsboro, runner-up to Smith Center last year, had little trouble winning its pool. State tournament weekend began with one unbeaten left in the state. Day One ended with zero unbeatens left. Class 4A No. 1 Andale suffered its first loss of the season in its opening match of pool play at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, knocked off by the only team to enter the state tournaments with a losing record, Bishop Miege. The Stags, who beat Andale in the 2020 Class 4A state championship match, served notice to the Indians right away in 2022, taking a 25-23, 25-21 victory. Not only had Andale entered the match without a loss, the Indians had only been taken to three sets once this season, by 5A qualifier Andover Central. But Miege, hardended by a demanding regular-season schedule, ended the Indians’ bid for perfection. But the quest for a second straight title isn’t over for Andale. The Indians bounced back to roll past Rock Creek (25-11, 25-10) and Paola (25-14, 25-19) to finish pool play and earn a semifinal berth. Andale (41-1) will take on Pool II winner and rival Circle (37-4), which went 3-0 without dropping a set in its pool and along the way gave head coach Shelly Nibarger her 900th&nbsp;career victory. This year’s trek to the program’s eighth state championship begins with a 9 a.m. semifinal showdown with Mill Valley (32-9), which went 2-1 in the opposite pool of Rural. Riverton swept Eureka (25-13, 25-13) and Goodland (25-23, 25-22) to earn their berth. Their opponent in Saturday’s 1 p.m. semifinals is making a little history of its own. Top-seeded Nemaha Central swept through its pool with a trio of straight set wins and will take a school-record 45-1 record into the semifinals against Riverton (38-3). Dooley had a career record of 201-77-10 while coaching the Bulldogs from 1964 to 1988. He won six Southeastern Conference titles and remains the fourth-winningest coach in SEC history. HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawks defense was outstanding on Friday night playing most of the first half with their backs to their own goal line.&nbsp; But they bought enough time for the offense to get it together to come away with a 35-7 victory in the 1st round of the Class 5A football championship bracket.

Hutch jumped on Liberal with a 9 play, 55 yard drive ending with a Noah Khokhar 9 yard TD run to open the contest. Liberal, taking advantage of a Salthawk turnover with an Aidan Schwindt stip of a Kade Smith carry, took it back 67 yards before Hutchinson's Smith could run him down. Tristian Juarez took it in from 5 yards out to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:05 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Both teams struggled to hang on the ball in the first half with Liberal coughing up the pigskin 2 times and loosing 1 as Hutchinson did the same with 2 fumbles and giving up 1.

The play that turned helped take momentum into the Salthawk locker room at the half was a defensive stop with just 14 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter.&nbsp; Liberal took a Brooks Kappelmann run down to the Hutchinson 1 yard line. Kapplemann ran the ball again, but fumbled the ball with ball on the play.&nbsp; Juarez jumped on the fumble, but Liberal was unable to get set up to attempt to spike the ball to set up one more play when time elapsed and everyone went to the locker room with the game knotted up at 7-7.

In the 3rd quarter, Hutchinson dominated with a Khokhar touchdown run of 10 yards, Devon Spiller took it in from 7 yards out and Zion Burgess scored the first of his two touchdowns on the night with a 10 yard bolt to the end zone to take control of the game going into the 4th quarter.

Burgess again scored in the final quarter on an stunning 55 yard quick opener with 9:05 remaining to make the final score 35-7.

Burgess had 113 yards on 13 carries to lead the Salthawks in rushing. Tristian Juarez capped off a good night running the ball for Liberal with 90 yards on 18 carries.

Terrell King led Hutchinson with 11 tackles on the night.

Liberal's season ends with a 3-6 record.&nbsp; Hutchinson at 7-2 advances to host Bishop Carroll next week at home for a rematch of last years playoff game which Hutch lost in overtime to the Golden Eagles in Wichita.

A lifetime of commitment to the rodeo industry earned&nbsp;<a href="https://prorodeo.com/bio/contestant/bronc-rumford/5622">Bronc Rumford</a>&nbsp;the 2022 PRCA Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award. Rumford, who lives in Abbyville, Kan., has been involved in the rodeo business his entire life. "It hasn't sunk in yet," said Rumford, 71. "It is such a personal award for me. Bob and Donita were close, close friends with my folks. When I turned pro in the early 1970s, I went to what became the Great Lakes Circuit and we rodeoed up there with Bob and Donita. We would leave home and go to Cherokee, Iowa, in May and we would stay up there all summer. I still remember my folks calling Bob and Donita before I went to Cherokee that year, I got my card. My dad said the kids are going to come up there and rodeo with you and you make sure that you work them and if you need anything from them, they do it. My mom told Donita to take care of us and watch after us. "Donita pretty much baby sat me and taught me so much about how to enter and even how to rodeo. The Barnes family has always been special to us and Donita, extremely special. To get an award named after her is really an honor for me. She was such a great lady. I'm just extremely proud to get this award." The Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Rumford at the PRCA Awards Banquet on Nov. 30 at the South Point in Las Vegas. Other nominees for the 2022 Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award were Edie Longfellow; Grant and Betsy Harris; Jerry Wayne and Judy Olson; and Kay Bleakly. "All the nominees are personal friends of mine and every one of them should win this award," Rumford said. "It is very special to be nominated with those other nominees." Nominees must have been a PRCA member for a minimum of 15 years and cannot have won a yearly contract personnel award within 15 years of the date of nomination. All nominations were reviewed and selected by an external panel. The top five nominees were voted on by any contract personnel members who have participated in at least one rodeo within that rodeo year. "In the rodeo business we have done about everything there is to do," Rumford said. "If I had it to do over, I would probably do the same thing. I wouldn't change the lifestyle. The greatest thing about the rodeo world is the people. There are no better people on Earth than rodeo cowboys in my opinion." &nbsp; Rumford is the father of award-winning clown/barrelman Justin and award-winning secretary Haley Bridwell. Longtime Fort Hays State Rodeo Coach earns lifetime achievement award

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Kansas City Royals catcher&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;has been named a finalist for a 2022 Louisville Silver Slugger Award, as announced today by Louisville Slugger.

Perez is one of six finalists among American League catchers, joining Toronto’s&nbsp;Alejandro Kirk, Houston’s&nbsp;Martín Maldonado,&nbsp;Oakland’s&nbsp;Sean Murphy, Seattle’s&nbsp;Cal Raleigh&nbsp;and Baltimore’s&nbsp;Adley Rutschman.

Silver Slugger Award winners will be announced on MLB Network during a one-hour telecast starting at 5:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Perez, a four-time Louisville Silver Slugger winner, led the Royals with 23 home runs in 2022 while posting a .254/.292/.465 (113-for-445, .757 OPS) slashline and 76 RBI, all while missing 41 games due to a left thumb injury that required surgery in June. Despite the missed games, he ranked top-5 among American League catchers (min. 75 games played) in at-bats per RBI (5.43, 1st), at-bats per home run (19.20, 2nd), RBI (3rd), slugging percentage (3rd), isolated power (.212, 3rd), home runs (T-4th), extra-base hits (31, 5th) and OPS (5th). He ranked 5th&nbsp;overall in the American League with a .337 batting average (34-for-101) with runners in scoring position, trailing Minnesota’s&nbsp;Luis Arraez&nbsp;(.366), New York’s&nbsp;Jose Trevino&nbsp;(.355) and&nbsp;Aaron Judge&nbsp;(.346) and Chicago’s&nbsp;Andrew Vaughn&nbsp;(.339). His batting average with runners in scoring position was even higher with 2 outs, as he batted .341 (15-for-44) in those situations. He hit safely in 27 of his last 33 games from Aug. 22-season’s end, batting .333 (43-for-129) which was tied for 6th in the AL in that span. On Oct. 1 in Cleveland—his final game of the year—he went 4-for-4, and his fourth and final hit of the night was a solo home run that marked the 1,274th hit of his career, surpassing&nbsp;Billy Butler&nbsp;(1,273 hits) for sole possession of 8th place in Royals history.

Should Perez win the award (which was established in 1980), it would be his fifth career honor, following 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. His four Silver Slugger Awards are the most in franchise history, one more than Hall of Famer&nbsp;George Brett. BALDWIN CITY, Kan.-&nbsp;Just two days before celebrating the birthday of the Kansas Shrine Bowl (October 29th, 1974) the Board of Directors, staff, participants, ambassadors, corporate partners, and nobles across Kansas are proud to announce a donation of $125,000 as a result of the 2022 event held Saturday, July 23rd&nbsp;in Pittsburg.

The Donation includes $100,000 directly to Shriners Children’s and a $5,000 contribution to the transportation fund of each of the five Shrine Temples in Kansas, helping provide transportation to all appointments at no cost to patients and their families.

According to Shriners Children’s, a gift of this significant size assures that a scoliosis patient, just like 2022 Honorary Captain, Malorie Bogle, can receive the needed spinal fusion surgery and the months of total care needed.&nbsp; Since 1974, The Kansas Shrine Bowl has donated $3.7 million to Shriners Children’s.

In addition to this historic contribution, the Kansas Shrine Bowl also provided programming for all-star athletes and musicians from across the state. With the support of Shriners, corporate partners, and participant fundraising, the Kansas Shrine Bowl was able to house, feed, transport, coach, train, and entertain 80 football players, 154 band participants, 189 cheerleaders, 16 patient ambassadors, and more than 30 camp staff for nearly a week. These camps and events continue to make a lasting impact on participants, ambassadors, and families, by showcasing the incredible work of Shriners Children’s.

This announcement comes just as the Kansas Shrine Bowl is gearing up for its 50th anniversary in 2023. The 50th&nbsp;Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be held Saturday, July 15th, 2023 at 7 p.m. at Lewis Field Stadium on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

"We just thought it was for the best of the team,” Giants coach Brian Daboll told reporters Thursday.

Toney was drafted in the first round by the Giants last year and is under contract through the 2024 season with a fifth-year team option.

That makes the trade relatively low risk for the Chiefs, who still have eight selections in next year's draft.

Toney only has two catches for no yards this season in part because of a right hamstring injury he sustained in training camp. He tweaked the injury in Week 2 against Carolina, then hurt his left hamstring in practice earlier this month.

The Chiefs are off this week, which could give Toney time enough to recover — and learn their playbook — before they begin the second half of the season against the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 6 at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Giants were eager to gain draft capital for Toney, who had been bypassed on the depth chart in New York, while the Chiefs were eager to gain a high-upside wide receiver signed for the next two years. Their top two wide receivers, Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster, are scheduled to become free agents after this season.

Toney has only appeared in 12 of a possible 24 games because of injuries and a bout with COVID-19. He has 41 catches for 420 yards, including a game against Dallas last year in which he caught 10 passes for 189 yards.

He was ejected from that game for throwing a punch late in a blowout loss to the Cowboys.

The Chiefs had been looking for help at wide receiver ahead of the Nov. 1 trade deadline. They had recently inquired about Elijah Moore, who had requested a trade from the Jets, and veterans Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

If he's able to stay healthy, Toney could end up being a steal in Kansas City, where Patrick Mahomes has turned a series of lower-profile receivers into stars. And he would do it at a bargain price for the cap-strapped Chiefs, who would owe Toney just over $1.9 million guaranteed next season and $2.5 million in 2024 before the fifth-year option for 2025.

His skillset, which in some ways mimics the departed Tyreek Hill, also fits nicely in coach Andy Reid's scheme. Toney has the speed to beat defenses deep, quickness enough to line up in the slot and can even work out of the backfield.

Max Duggan threw a completion a split second before a defender's helmet struck his facemask on a targeting call, sending the TCU quarterback's head snapping back and leaving him momentarily woozy on the ground.

The mobile Duggan took his share of collisions against Kansas State but finished the game and has No. 7 TCU alone in first place.

In a year of quarterback attrition, the Big 12 race could come down to how many are left standing, or who has a backup capable of shouldering the load. Most teams have lost their starting quarterback at some point this season. A few remain out, others have returned and the status of some for Saturday's games are a day-to-day observation.

Just as he's shaken off hard tackles, Duggan deferred questions about the recent pounding, instead pointing to the real battle in the trenches.

"My job's pretty easy. When you're a quarterback, you don't get hit too often," Duggan said after TCU beat Kansas State 38-28 on Saturday. "The guys up front, the guys blocking out on the defense, they're getting hit every play. Those guys are never complaining, never talking about their hits. So the least I can do is get up after a play."

Duggan might not be thriving had redshirt freshman Chandler Morris not sprained his left knee in the season opener. Despite being a three-year starter, Duggan lost the top position over the spring and summer to Morris. But Duggan has played so well that Morris has remained on the bench despite being available. Duggan has thrown 19 touchdown passes with one interception. His 181.8 efficiency rating is fifth in the nation.

While Duggan led TCU back from an 18-point deficit to beat Kansas State, the Wildcats are having their own quarterback issues.

Starter Adrian Martinez left after the first series with an undisclosed injury and did not return. Backup Will Howard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, then hurt his shoulder on a third-quarter running play. Howard left the game briefly but was brought back in after a third-string freshman threw an interception.

Coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday he's not sure whether Martinez will be available but Howard should be ready when Kansas State, tied for second place with Oklahoma State, prepares to host the Cowboys on Saturday.

Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders, playing through undisclosed injuries in the past few weeks, led the Cowboys to a comeback win over Texas on Saturday. Sanders is tied with Duggan for the Big 12 lead with 23 total touchdowns — seven more than anyone else.

"He's feeling better," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "He's not where he was. You can tell."

Quarterback injuries seem to have hit the Big 12 harder than other Power 5 conferences, although there are some notable season-ending injuries elsewhere, including Devin Leary at North Carolina State (pectoral muscle).

Some schools can't catch a break: Utah State has seen injuries to its top three quarterbacks, forcing one to end his college career, and Texas A&amp;M its top two.

Despite the frequency of quarterback visits to the training room, the Big 12 is on pace to challenge a high scoring mark under the current 10-team format that started in 2012. The league-wide average of 35.4 points scored is more than five points better than each of the past two seasons and the same as that averaged over the 2015 season.

One reason for the success is Kansas, which has far surpassed its scoring total for all of last season.

Jalon Daniels led Kansas to a 5-0 start, then injured a shoulder against TCU. The Jayhawks lost that game and the next two. Kansas now has an open week and no timetable has been set for Daniels' return. Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel returned from a concussion on Oct. 15 to help the Sooners snap a three-game losing streak. Both quarterbacks were injured in back-to-back weeks on plays by TCU linebacker Jamoi Hodge, whose hit on Gabriel was ruled targeting.

Quinn Ewers of Texas missed three games with a collarbone injury. Texas Tech has gone 3-3 since Tyler Shough injured a collarbone in the season opener. Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said Shough has been medically cleared and will be available to play against Baylor this week. Redshirt freshman Behren Morton has started the last two games, going 1-1.

Baylor's Blake Shapen sustained a head injury Oct. 13 in the third quarter at West Virginia but returned Saturday to lead the Bears to a win over Kansas. West Virginia's JT Daniels and Iowa State's Hunter Dekkers also have yet to miss a start.

By this point in the season, every coach must address a growing list of players who may or may not be available.

"Kansas State's not the only team that's beat up. That I know for a fact," Klieman said. "And so nobody's going to feel sorry for you. It's the 'next man up' mentality. And whoever is out there, we have confidence as a staff, we have confidence as a football team, that they're going to allow us and give us opportunity to be successful."

Sports Headlines for Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawk Volleyball team is headed to State!

Hutch defeated Goddard-Eisenhower in the championship game of their sub-state to punch their ticket to Salina for the 2nd straight year sweeping the tigers 25-14, 25-16.

Hutch also got the opening day sweep over Maize 25-16. 25-19 to advance to the championship game.

Hutchinson (30-7) will travel to Salina's Tony's Pizza Event Center on Friday, October 28th for pool play with the Championship bracket to be played out on Saturday the 29th.
