🏀 MBB: K-State Rally Falls Short at Texas Tech, 71-63

LAWRENCE – ESPN announced Saturday morning that College GameDay Covered (CGD) by State Farm will broadcast live at Allen Fieldhouse on Feb. 18 in advance of the Baylor-Kansas matchup.

This will mark the second-straight season and 11th time that ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast from historic Allen Fieldhouse, which host Rece Davis has described as “the best place to see a game on the planet.” It is also the second time this year the GameDay crew has visited Lawrence as Kansas football hosted the show on Oct. 8 for its TCU game at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

The two-hour basketball CGD show will begin at 9 a.m. (Central) with tipoff vs. Baylor slated for 3 p.m. (Central), also on ESPN.

Kansas will be the fourth on-site location for College GameDay for the 2022-23 season as the show originated from the ESPN studios in Bristol, Connecticut, its first two weeks. ESPN College GameDay Covered by State Farm is hosted by Davis, who is joined by analysts Jay Bilas, LaPhonso Ellis and Seth Greenberg.

Feb. 18 will mark the second time this season and 24th time the Jayhawks will be featured on ESPN College GameDay, with 21 regular-season appearances and three at neutral locations. Earlier this season, CGD originated from Tennessee on Jan. 28 and moved its set to the Kansas at Kentucky contest, previewing the Jayhawks and Wildcats. KU won the blue blood battle 77-68 at Rupp Arena. Kansas is 14-7 in its previous regular-season appearances (17-7 overall).

LUBBOCK, Texas –&nbsp;Kansas got a combined 62 points from the senior trio of Zakiyah Franklin, Taiyanna Jackson and Holly Kersgieter as the Jayhawks defeated Texas Tech 78-67 on Saturday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.

The win completes a season sweep by the Jayhawks over Texas Tech for the second-straight season, improving Kansas to 16-7 on the year and 6-6 in Big 12 play. Tech falls to 16-9 (4-8 Big 12) this season.

Jackson matched her career-high with 24 points and recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 11 rebounds, while Franklin added 20 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Kersgieter had 18 points, which included four three-pointers. Chandler Prater and Sanna Strom – KU’s other two starters – had eight points apiece as KU got all 78 points in the game from its starting five.

"We have a tough group and to be as banged up and as limited as we are with personnel, I’m just really proud that we can go on the road and get a tough conference win in this environment. Zakiyah Franklin was outstanding. We got after her a little bit at halftime and challenged her. We felt like she could be better on both ends of the floor and I thought she responded like you would expect a senior lead to."

The first quarter featured runs by both teams, starting with KU’s Taiyanna Jackson scoring the first five points of the game to put the Jayhawks up 5-0 less than 90 seconds into the contest. Texas Tech would use a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 11-9, but the Jayhawks answered with a 7-0 run to end the quarter and led 18-14 after 10 minutes of play.

Kansas extended the run to 11 straight points after scoring the first four of the second quarter, taking the largest lead of the half at 22-14. The Jayhawks led the rest of the half, but Texas Tech pulled within one point on each of its last two possessions of the half before KU took a 38-37 lead to intermission.

Strom opened the second half with her second three-pointer of the game, jumpstarting a 9-3 advantage for KU in the opening minutes as the Jayhawks pushed the lead to seven, 47-40, with 5:30 to play in the third. Jackson took over in the quarter, hitting all three of her field goal attempts, scoring seven points and grabbing five rebounds to help Kansas build a 54-47 lead with 10 minutes to play.

The Jayhawks veterans put the game away in the fourth quarter as Franklin, Jackson, Kersgieter and Prater combined to score 24 points as KU finished off the win, 78-67.

Kansas shot a season-high 54.9% from the field, hitting 28-of-51 field goals and 7-of-17 three-pointers (41.1%). The Jayhawks held Texas Tech to 36.6% shooting, outrebounded TTU 32-to-29 and had an advantage of 42-to-16 on points in the paint.

Hutchinson trailed 41-34 at halftime before the Conquistadors outscored the Blue Dragons 63-54 in the second half to pull away.&nbsp; The Blue Dragons held a lead in the first half and would have their last lead of the game at the 9:00 mark in the half following a Ra'Sean Frederick layup to give Hutch a 25-22 lead. They would then pull within 35-32 with 3:14 left in the opening half, but that would be the closest they'd get for the rest of the game.&nbsp; Dodge City (19-6, 15-4 KJCCC) knocked down 11 three-pointers in the contest, while shooting a 53 percent clip from the floor and 23-of-29 at the free-throw line. Hutchinson (15-11, 9-11) shot 44 percent from the floor, knocked down eight threes, while going 18-of-30 from the foul stripe.&nbsp; The Blue Dragons were plus-12 on the glass, outrebounding the Conqs 46-34, but 12 turnovers by Hutch led to 14 Dodge City points.&nbsp; Jason Edwards led Dodge City with 38 points, including six three-pointers made, while also bringing down six rebounds and dishing off eight assists. Kan. — The Blue Dragons scored a season-low 35 points in a 69-35 loss to No. 11 Dodge City on Saturday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Hutchinson
trailed the Conquistadors 35-24 at halftime, but a 12-0 run to start the second
half by Dodge City extended the lead to 23 with 6:35 remaining in the third
quarter. The Blue Dragons did not score their first points of the second half
until the 6:18 mark when Mya Williams hit a jumper. Jenna Rose Mafua hit a pair
of three-pointers to help the Conqs establish a strong start to the third
period. 

The Blue Dragons
couldn’t quite get over the hump in the second half, partly due to 28 total
turnovers in the game for Hutch. Dodge City (23-2, 18-1 KJCCC) shot 47 percent
from the floor, while also going 45 percent from three-point range and an
impressive 87 percent (14-of-16) from the foul line. Hutchinson (19-7, 13-7) on
the other hand, shot just 27 percent from the field, 3-of-20 from three-point
range, and only 4-of-8 from the charity stripe. 

Despite
leading 14-11 after the first quarter, the second and third quarters belonged
to Dodge City, as the Conquistadors would outscore the Blue Dragons 47-19 to
extend the lead and put the game away. During that two-quarter stretch, Hutch
shot just 8-of-25 from the floor and committed 15 turnovers.

The
Conquistadors were led by Jada Burton with 16 points, Georgia Gray with 14 and
Jenna Rose Mafua with 13. Morgan Browning led the way for Hutchinson with nine
points.

Hutch will return to the court on Wednesday when
they travel to Colby to face the Trojans in the Colby Events Center. Tip-off is
scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Wilson, who entered the day leading the Big 12 with nearly 21 points per game, bounced back from a two-point outing against Texas on Monday.

Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 16 points and Kevin McCullar Jr. added 13 for the Jayhawks (20-5, 8-4 Big 12).

Jalen Hill scored 14 points and Otega Oweh added 11 for the Oklahoma (12-13, 2-10). Grant Sherfield, who leads the Sooners with nearly 17 points per game, was held to 10 on 4-for-14 shooting.

Oklahoma was in a solid position a month ago but has since lost seven of eight — including four straight since beating No. 2 Alabama 93-69 on Jan. 28.

Oklahoma led for much of the first half, then Kansas took over on a layup by McCullar with just under seven minutes remaining before halftime.

Wilson didn’t score until he made a jumper with about four minutes left in the first half, then knocked down two 3-pointers in the final minute to give Kansas a 35-22 lead. The Jayhawks controlled the action from there.

1. Wildcats Approach 200 From the Arc

• With 16 connections from 3-point range, K-State will reach the 200 made 3-point field goal mark for the third time in the Jeff Mittie era and the first time since the 2017-18 season.

2. K-State Ahead of Charity Record

• The Wildcats are shooting 78.6 percent from the free throw line this season. This would surpass the school record for free throw percentage in a season, which was set last season at 76.2 percent.

• Senior Gabby Gregory (114) and sophomore Serena Sundell (102) are the first set of K-State teammates to make 100 or more free throws in the same season since the 2018-19 season.

• According to HerHoopStats.com, the Wildcats rank 41st in the nation and third in the Big 12 in assisted shot rate (62.1) - which is the percentage of made field goals with an assist.

• The sophomore sister duo of Brylee and Jaelyn Glenn have combined for 96 steals (Jaelyn - 54; Brylee - 42). Jaelyn leads the Big 12 in total steals, while Brylee is sixth. The pair have combined for the most steals among two teammates in the Big 12 this season.

• K-State senior guard Gabby Gregory has registered her first career season with 400 or more points, 100 or more free throws made and 50 or more 3-point field goals made.

• Gregory is one of four players in the nation this season with 400 or more points, 100 or more free throws made and 50 or more 3-point field goals made (Caitlin Clark, Iowa; Kahlaijah Dean, Sacramento State; Destiny Leo, Cleveland State).

• Gregory joins Brittany Chambers as the only two players in program history to reach these marks in a season. Chambers is the only player in school history with 700 or more points, 100 or more free throws made and 100 or more 3-point field goals made in a season.

• According to HerHoopsStats.com, Gregory is the 18th player in the Big 12 (25th time) since the 2009-10 season to register 400 or more points, 100 or more free throws and 50 or more 3-point field goals made in a season.

• (16/13) Oklahoma (19-4, 9-3 Big 12) enters Sunday’s matchup following a 98-92 overtime win at Baylor on Tuesday night.

• The Sooners lead the Big 12 in scoring offense with 86.96 points per game. Oklahoma has scored 80 or more points in 16 games this season including 90 or more points in its last three games.

• Oklahoma is guided on the sideline by second-year head coach Jennie Baranczyk. The 2004 graduate of Iowa owns a career record of 236-109 (.684) including a 44-13 (.772) mark in Norman.

• K-State cut a 10-point halftime deficit to three points late in the third quarter, but the Lady Raiders outscored the Wildcats, 29-22, over the final 13:21 of the game.

• The Wildcats have lost six straight road games this season.

• Serena Sundell scored a career-high 27 points and set the school record for free throws made and attempted in a conference game (16-of-18). Gabby Gregory carded 16 points, while Brylee Glenn added 12 points.

Wildcats With 375+ Wins in Bramlage

• K-State is 376-152 (.712) all-time inside Bramlage Coliseum, which is in its 35th season of existence.

• The Wildcats own a 11-2 record at home this season and tied the longest home-court winning streak in the Jeff Mittie era to open the season with nine wins.

• This is the 32nd time in program history that the Wildcats reached double figures in home victories. It marked the 24th season K-State has won 10 or more games in Bramlage.

• Over the last two seasons, K-State is 25-5 in home contests. The 25 wins are tied for the third-most in the Mittie era over a two-season span.

• Glenn ranks second in the Big 12 in steals per game. She leads the Big 12 and is 39th in the nation for total steals (54).

• Glenn has established career season-highs for points (280), field goals made and attempted (103-of-253), 3-point field goals made (47), free throws made and attempted (27-of-42), steals (54) and blocked shots (10).

• Glenn owns nine games this season with the combined stat line of 10 or more points, five or more rebounds and two or more steals and 11 such games in her career.

• At Iowa State on Jan. 11, Glenn registered one of the most unique and diverse stat lines by a Wildcat since at least the 2009-10 season. Glenn tallied 17 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks. According to HerHoopStats, Glenn is the only Power 5 player in the nation and one of just three nationally this season to reach these marks in a game. She is the only K-State player to achieve these numbers in all of these categories in a game since 2009-10.

• Against West Virginia on Jan. 7, Glenn recorded her first career double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

• In her career, Glenn has scored in double figures in 23 games, has 24 games with five or more rebounds and 27 games with two or more steals, including eight with four or more.

Charity Stripe is Kind for Sundell

• Serena Sundell has bolstered her point total with a consistent approach at the free throw line in her time at K-State.

• The guard from Maryville, Missouri, owns a career free throw percentage of 81.8 percent (184-of-225). Her career free throw percentage of 81.8 percent ranks fourth in school history (min. 2 attempts per game). She has 15 games in her career with five or more made free throws.

• This season, Sundell is 102-of-125 (.816) from the line. She is 10th in the Big 12 in free throw percentage. Her 102 made free throws and 125 attempts are new single-season highs.

• Earlier this season, Sundell tallied a personal long 21 consecutive free throws made before missing her only attempt against Morgan State on Dec. 21.

• Sundell set a number of school records with her career-high free throw performance of 16-of-18 at Texas Tech on Feb. 5. Sundell’s 16 made free throws were the second-most in any game in program history, while her 18 attempts tied for fourth for a single game. The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team and Dodge City have played four must-see games over the course of the last two seasons. All four have come down to the wire with plenty at stake.

The second meeting of the season between Hutchinson (15-10, 9-10 KJCCC) and the No. 14-ranked Conquistadors (18-6, 14-4) will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons to square off against 1st Place Dodge City

DENISON, Texas&nbsp;&nbsp;-&nbsp;&nbsp;The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, falling 6-2 to Eastern Oklahoma State in the opening game of the THF Winter Blast.

Hutchinson’s second game against Grayson College was canceled because of weather conditions. Saturday’s game for the Blue Dragons (4-1) are at 10 a.m. against Paris Junior College and 2:30 p.m. against Weatherford College.

Eastern Oklahoma State took advantage of early Blue Dragon walks and errors to score five runs in their first three at-bats on Friday.

Sophomore Kierstan Weitze (2-1) started her first game of the season and allowed five hits and five runs over 2 1-3 innings. Weitze struck out two and walked three.

Freshman pitchers Korri Lies and Delaney Blakesley slowed down Eastern’s offense. Lies allowed one run with one hit and two strikeouts in three innings. Blakesley had a strikeout in a scoreless 1 2-3 innings.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons didn’t get their first hit off Eastern’s Makenzie Martin until the sixth inning, an Olivia Sandoval single.

The Dragons were held to a season-low three hits – singles by Sandoval, Allie Stipsits and Grace Sykora.

Stipsits had an RBI single with two out in the sixth inning to get the Dragons on the board, driving in Ella Dougherty. Sykora singled to lead off the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit 6-3 and each team committed three errors.

Kansas improved to 15-7 on the year and 5-6 in Big 12 play with a 73-55 victory over TCU on Wednesday evening at Allen Fieldhouse. It snapped a two-game slide for the Jayhawks, who have already played four games against ranked teams during Big 12 play.

Chandler Prater led the way for KU against TCU, matching her career-high with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field in the victory. Prater hit three three-pointers in the game, establishing a new career-high, and added five rebounds and four assists.

Zakiyah Franklin scored in double figures for the seventh-straight game and 18th time this season as she totaled 18 points versus TCU. She also matched a season-best with seven assists and added four rebounds and two steals. Franklin has moved up to No. 18 on KU’s career scoring list and needs five points to reach 1,300 points in her career. She is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game for the season.

Taiyanna Jackson battled foul trouble against TCU, but still managed to record her 15th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. She was 6-of-8 from the field, improving her field goal shooting to 66.2 percent, which ranks fourth nationally. Jackson has been named one of the Top 10 candidates for the 2023 Lisa Leslie Award, which is presented to the top center in NCAA Division I women’s basketball and she is one of 15 players named to the 2023 Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year Watch List.

KU has won three straight matchups against Texas Tech and will be searching for a season-sweep of the Lady Raiders. The Jayhawks got 26 points apiece from Holly Kersgieter and Franklin, along with a double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds from Jackson in a 77-59 victory over Tech on Jan. 4 in Lawrence.

The all-time series between Kansas and Texas Tech dates back to 1978, but each meeting since has been since the formation of the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech leads the all-time series 25-15, which includes a 13-6 advantage in games played in Lubbock. Last season, KU came back from 13 points down at halftime to defeat the Lady Raiders 71-68 on their home court.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Both of the Hutchinson High Salthawk basketball teams got wins over the visiting Maize Eagles on homecoming night at the Salthawk Activity Center on Friday, with the Salthawk Girls (12-4) slipping past Maize 32 to 28 and the boys winning the late game in fine fashion 62 to 49.

The two wins set up a show down in Maize on Tuesday night as Hutchinson travels to Maize South on Valentine's Day to take on the Mavericks.

The Salthawk girls started the night without one of their main players with Grace Posch sidelined with a turned ankle that she hurt in practice on Thursday.&nbsp; They also ended the night without their point guard Josie McLean as she had to leave the game with a possible concussion that happened on a baseline drive in the second half.

In addition to being without two of their starters, Hutch went scoreless in the 3rd quarter and only led by 1 point, 22 to 21 going into the final period. Things looked very bleak for the Salthawks, but that is when senior forward Libby Jackson took over by knocking down a trey from the right corner, then scoring an basket while being fouled for an and one late in the 4th. Jackson scored all of her 7 points in the 4th quarter and the Salthawk girls went on to hold the Eagles to only one basket in the final stanza to win 32 to 28.

Hutch was led in scoring by McLean with 11, Aliyah Green had 9, Jackson 7 and Hannah Ames scored 5.

Maize was led by Brynley Smith with 13, Mattie Brownell had 10, Maggie Salsbury chipped in 4 and Adley Pierce had 1.

Julian Smith knocked down a guarded three point shot right before the half to tie the game at 28, then Hutchinson used a 22 to 9 run in the 3rd quarter to take control of the game and cruise to their 16th win of the season 62 to 49 over the Maize Eagles Friday night.

Hutchinson found themselves in a little foul trouble in the second half, but got solid play from Devon Spiller off the bench to help get the win. 

Wade Meyer had another solid night to lead the team in scoring with 17. Garrett Robertson had 12 points, while Terrell King went 8 for 9 at the foul stripe in the second half to finish with 11. Nic Lange scored 8 including a key offensive rebound and put back in the low block that he scored on and was fouled to finish a three-point play at the line. Julian Smith ended the night with 5 points as did Dauntay King. Spiller also had 3 points on a key old fashioned three point play in the second quarter.

This win sets up a key matchup on Tuesday at Maize South as the Salthawks have defeated the Mavericks twice. Those are Maize South's only 2 losses on the season to this point. Maize South got by Andover Central 51 to 49 in a close game on Friday night. 

It will be a good matchup on Tuesday in Maize. Coverage begins on KWBW with the girls pregame at 5:45 p.m.
