COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson found itself in a defensive battle Saturday night against the Red Ravens, who came into the game receiving votes for the Top 15 poll.&nbsp;

The game featured eight turnovers, four by each team.&nbsp;

Hutchinson's four fumbles marked the second straight game the Dragons had to fight through four turnovers in a contest.&nbsp;

Hutchinson began last season as No. 1 and lost on the road at Coffeyville after turning the ball over seven times in a 17-10 decision.&nbsp;

"Credit our defense again," head coach Drew Dallas said. "We just played outstanding on the defensive side of the ball."

The Dragons gave up three points on defense. Coffeyville's lone touchdown came on a defensive scoop-six when Bishop Fitzgerald took a Dragon fumble 15 yards to the house.&nbsp;

Fortunately, Red Raven kicker Forrest Taylor missed a PAT for the first time this season after an errant snap threw off the kick's timing.&nbsp;

Hutchinson took a 7-6 lead into the locker room thanks to a second quarter strike to Malik Benson.&nbsp;

Dylan Laible hit Benson in space and the wide receiver took the ball 54 yards to the end zone.&nbsp;

The first half of the game featured an odd back-and-forth.&nbsp;

Hutchinson started three-and-out. Coffeyville matched with a three-and-out.

Coffeyville fumbled, then Hutchinson fumbled.&nbsp;

The 54-yard strike to Benson was the lone bright spot offensively in the first half, but it was followed by the Coffeyville scoop-six.

Laible was strip-sacked halfway through the third quarter, but the defense responded again with a Jaden Mosley interception.

Hutchinson turned around and coughed up the ball offensively again.&nbsp;

"The frustrations really could have boiled over," Dallas said of his team's inability to hang onto the ball.&nbsp;

"We found a way to grind it out," Dallas said. "We got to do some self-reflection."

Hutchinson's third quarter fumble led to a Taylor 35-yard field goal.&nbsp;

Coffeyville held the 9-7 lead late into the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

The Dragons' other Dylan entered the contest late in the third, marking the return of running back Dylan Kedzior from injury. He made his presence known in the fourth.&nbsp;

"Really proud of Dylan (Kedzior) for stepping up when we needed him to," Dallas said. "His legs are fresh and he looked really good."

Kedzior had not played since the week two win at Ellsworth. He finished the game as Hutchinson's leading rusher. He carried the ball 12 times for 85 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp;

His touchdown with 1:17 remaining put Hutchinson up for good and came on a 2-yard burst to cap a 10-play, 72-yard drive.&nbsp;

Coffeyville took one last shot offensively, but quarterback Isaiah Velez was picked off by Jalik Thomas.&nbsp;

J.R. Martin started the game for Coffeyville at QB. Martin and Velez went a combined 10 of 27 for 78 yards and two interceptions.

FINAL: Hutchinson 14 Coffeyville 9

The Blue Dragons entered the game averaging 47.7 points per contest.&nbsp;

Coffeyville's offense has now gone back-to-back games without a touchdown, managing just two total field goals. In that span, the defense has scored eight points.&nbsp;

Coffeyville missed a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

Hutchinson is now on a 10-game winning streak, dating back to 2021. It ties for the third-longest streak in program history.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (4-0, 1-0) is home Oct. 1 against Butler (3-1, 3-0). The game in Gowans Stadium kicks at 7 p.m.

🏈FB: Kedzior finds daylight in defensive battle

Off to a 3-0 start to the 2022 season, the Hutchinson Community College football team opens Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday at Coffeyville.

The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons and Red Ravens (receiving votes in the NJCAA Rankings), kick off at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.

Hutchinson starts Jayhawk Conference play with Coffeyville for the third-straight season. The Blue Dragons are the final Jayhawk Conference team to play a conference game this season.

The Blue Dragons and Red Ravens (2-1, 2-1) both come off bye weeks in Week No. 4.

Hutchinson overcame four turnovers, including three in the fourth quarter and defeated No. 7 Iowa Central 31-28 in overtime on Cole Segraves’ 39-yard game-winning field goal. Coffeyville suffered its first loss of the season two weeks ago, falling to Independence 18-5 at Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons enter Saturday’s game on a nine-game winning streak dating back to winning the final six games of 2021. That streak ties for the fifth-longest winning streak in program history, matching streaks in 1995 and in 2013-14. A victory on Saturday would tie for the third-longest streak of 10, which was done twice – 1973-74 and 2019-2020/21.

Coffeyville has dominated this series that dates back to 1932. The Red Ravens own a 56-30-4 overall record, but the Blue Dragons have won 12 of the last 14 games with Coffeyville. Last season, the Ravens upset preseason No. 1 Hutchinson 17-10 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Two weeks ago, Blue Dragon quarterback Dylan Laible became Hutchinson’s career passing touchdown leader with 51. Laible, a third-year sophomore from Little Elm, Texas, needed 21 games to break the old record of 50 set by Luke Barnes in 2012 and 2013. Laible is now only 405 yards from behind Hutchinson’s career passing yardage leader.

Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas won his 20th game on the Hutchinson sideline after the overtime victory over Iowa Central. Dallas is now 7-1 all-time against NJCAA Top 10 teams and 9-1 against all ranked opponents.

Starting with Coffeyville, the Blue Dragons open a key stretch of games with Butler at Gowans Stadium next week and at Dodge City on October 8 in Dodge City.

FB: Dragons head to Coffeyville Saturday

Day 1 of the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic as a mixed bag for the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team on Friday at the Sports Arena.

After dropping the first set to Jefferson College, the Blue Dragons battled to win the next three set and defeat the Vikings 24-26, 25-19, 28-26, 25-21 in the opening match on Friday.

Defending national champion Iowa Western handed the Blue Dragons a four-set loss, 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 21-25.

Now 18-6 overall, the Blue Dragons play host to No. 8 Trinity Valley and No. 17 Mineral Area in back-to-back matches at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively on Saturday.

Both matches on Friday were rematches from earlier matches on opening weekend in August. The Blue Dragons avenged a sweep against Jefferson at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Reivers also exacted some revenge on the Blue Dragons on that same weekend. The Blue Dragons and Reivers now own wins on the other’s home court this season. Hutchinson defeated then No. 1 Iowa Western in five sets in August.

Sophomore Sophie Connor ignited the Blue Dragon comeback after dropping the opening set to Jefferson. Connor had nine kills in the second and third sets without an attack error. She also had three kills in the fourth set. Connor finished with a team-high 12 kills and two blocks.

Freshman Taniya Golden had 11 kills. Sophomore Baylee Miller had nine points and sophomore Blondie Penaflor with five kills and five blocks.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 34 assists and eight digs. Freshman defensive specialist Perrine Blanc had four of Hutchinson’s nine service aces. Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey had 17 digs. Blanc had 12 digs.

Jefferson’s Maureen Matthews had a match-high 17 kills. Jefferson out-blocked Hutchinson 13-7.

Hutchinson let several leads slip away against the Reivers on Friday.

The Dragons led 17-11 and 21-17 in the opening set, only to see Iowa Western win a deuce set with an 8-2 run. Hutch led the second set 17-14 and saw the Reivers reel off 10 points in a row in a set-closing 11-2 run. Hutchinson and Iowa Western were tied at 21-all in the fourth set, but the Reivers scored the final four points of the match.

Hutchinson trailed in the third set 16-14, but rallied with their own 11-2 run to claim the set 25-18.

Golden led the Blue Dragons with 11 kills. Connor had eight kills, while Miller, Penaflor and freshman Anna Dean had six kills each.

Serrano had 29 assists. Blanc finished with 16 digs.

VB: Dragons split on opening day of Blue Dragon Classic

Coming off a road upset of No. 17 Cowley on Wednesday in Arkansas City, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team faces another nationally ranked opponent on Saturday at home.

The Blue Dragons (8-1, 5-1 Jayhawk West) play host to No. 15 Coffeyville (8-1-1, 4-0-1) at 2 p.m. at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Hutchinson rebounded from its first loss of the season one week ago at Johnson County with a 2-1 victory over Cowley on Wednesday. Hadlie Lowe scored about 10 minutes into the second half and the Blue Dragon defense made the lead stand up for a big conference victory.

Coffeyville is the second of four-straight ranked opponents for the Blue Dragons.

The Red Ravens’ only blemishes are a 3-0 neutral field loss to Hill College and a 1-1 tie against No. 6 Butler.

Hutchinson leads the all-time series with Coffeyville with a 14-5 record. The Red Ravens have won 3 of the last 5 matchups, including last season’s season-ending 1-0 loss in the Region VI Tournament last season.

Saturday’s game will feature two of the top scorers in the Jayhawk Conference.

Lowe is fourth in the KJCCC with 22 points, tied for fourth with eight goals and is tied for fourth with six assists.

Coffeyville’s Thayline Teixeira is second in point with 29 and goals with 12.

DERBY, Kan.—It came down to one play with just seconds remaining, but the clock struck midnight for Hutch High as Derby was able to get a deflected pass interception in the end zone as time ran out Friday night, and the Panthers prevailed 28-21.

The Salthawks (3-1) used an 11-play drive to set up a fourth and goal at the Derby four-yard line with four seconds remaining. Hutchinson opted to throw the ball on the game's final play.

Hutch High Quarterback Nic Lange tried to find his receiver in the end zone. Two Panthers crashed the receiver and popped the ball into the air. A lone receiver jumped to catch the loose ball, but Derby's senior linebacker Miles Wash made a spectacular play to get the interception to seal the game.

It was a big play for a Derby defense that was on the field for the majority of the fourth quarter. The Panther defense was called upon to make crucial stops down the stretch.

Derby (3-1) forced a turnover on downs with a stop on fourth and short with 6:41 remaining. A Salthawk three and out late in the third quarter set up the Panthers eventual game-winning drive.&nbsp;

The Derby offense took that momentum from the defense and marched down the field to score on an eight-yard touchdown run by Dylan Edwards. It was the lone touchdown of the day for Edwards as the Hutch defense had shut down Edwards for most of the night.

Derby quarterback Brock Zerger displayed his talent with his legs with three rushing touchdowns. Zerger came up clutch early in the third quarter with a 25-yard run with 3:43 remaining in the third.

The Salthawks took an early in the game, led by two rushing touchdowns by Lange. Hutch held a 21-14 lead at the half off a 4th down play with 3:28 to go in the second quarter as Noah Khokhar dropped the snap on a punt but took a 58-yard run to the end zone to give the Salthawks the lead before the break.

On the final drive, the Salthawks overcame a couple penalties to set up the possible touchdown to tie the game before Derby got the final say.

Gabe Eye hauled in two spectacular catches late, but the first was called back after it looked like Eye had set up the Salthawks with first and goal from the eight yard line.&nbsp; Eye was able to catch the ball on the next Lange heave to give Hutch a chance with first and goal from the twelve inside of 2 minutes remaining in the game.

A pass interference call gave Hutch another chance but a run by Kade Smith looked like he got out of bounds at the four with 49 seconds to go, but they ruled that his forward progress was in-bounds. Before the Salthawks attempted a run and an incomplete pass the clock was inside of 4 seconds remaining when Lange's pass was tipped in the air and Wash got the interception to end the game.&nbsp;

Hutch won the statistical part of the game gaining 230 yards on the ground in 51 attempts compared to Derby's 209 yards on 36 ties. DERBY, Kan.—It came down to one play with just seconds remaining, but the clock struck midnight for Hutch High as Derby was able to get a deflected pass interception in the end zone as time ran out Friday night, and the Panthers prevailed 28-21.The Salthawks (3-1) used an 11-play drive to set up a fourth and goal at the Derby four-yard line with four seconds remaining. Hutchinson opted to throw the ball on the game's final play.Hutch High Quarterback Nic Lange tried to find his receiver in the end zone. Two Panthers crashed the receiver and popped the ball into the air. A lone receiver jumped to catch the loose ball, but Derby's senior linebacker Miles Wash made a spectacular play to get the interception to seal the game.<div><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XlMmapuwOic" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>It was a big play for a Derby defense that was on the field for the majority of the fourth quarter. A Salthawk three and out late in the third quarter set up the Panthers eventual game-winning drive.&nbsp;The Derby offense took that momentum from the defense and marched down the field to score on an eight-yard touchdown run by Dylan Edwards. It was the lone touchdown of the day for Edwards as the Hutch defense had shut down Edwards for most of the night.Derby quarterback Brock Zerger displayed his talent with his legs with three rushing touchdowns. Zerger came up clutch early in the third quarter with a 25-yard run with 3:43 remaining in the third.The Salthawks took an early in the game, led by two rushing touchdowns by Lange. Hutch held a 21-14 lead at the half off a 4th down play with 3:28 to go in the second quarter as Noah Khokhar dropped the snap on a punt but took a 58-yard run to the end zone to give the Salthawks the lead before the break.On the final drive, the Salthawks overcame a couple penalties to set up the possible touchdown to tie the game before Derby got the final say.Gabe Eye hauled in two spectacular catches late, but the first was called back after it looked like Eye had set up the Salthawks with first and goal from the eight yard line.&nbsp; Eye was able to catch the ball on the next Lange heave to give Hutch a chance with first and goal from the twelve inside of 2 minutes remaining in the game.A pass interference call gave Hutch another chance but a run by Kade Smith looked like he got out of bounds at the four with 49 seconds to go, but they ruled that his forward progress was in-bounds. Before the Salthawks attempted a run and an incomplete pass the clock was inside of 4 seconds remaining when Lange's pass was tipped in the air and Wash got the interception to end the game.&nbsp;Hutch won the statistical part of the game gaining 230 yards on the ground in 51 attempts compared to Derby's 209 yards on 36 ties. There are six Big 12 teams playing their conference openers this weekend. Kansas State is at sixth-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday. The Sooners are playing their first Big 12 game for coach Brent Venables. They have won their last 10 home games and 28 of 29. The lone loss was to K-State two years ago. No. 17 Baylor is at Iowa State, and No. 22 Texas plays at Texas Tech in the other Big 12 openers. Kansas is 3-0 going into a home game against 3-0 Duke. Some things to watch in Week 4 of the Big 12 season, with six teams playing their conference openers:

Harris has been an important special teams contributor, but has otherwise shuffled between the 53-man roster and the practice squad during three years in Kansas City. He will be tasked along with Nick Bolton in stopping Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, one of the best in the league at his position.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jacoby Brissett threw two touchdown passes, Nick Chubb ran for a score and the Cleveland Browns bounced back from their epic meltdown four days earlier to beat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 29-17. The Browns built a nine-point lead early in the fourth on Chubb’s 1-yard run and then held on for dear life. On Sunday, Cleveland blew a 13-point lead in the final two minutes and lost by a point to the New York Jets. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Americans have the stronger team and they looked the part at the Presidents Cup. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay improved to 5-0 in foursomes. They won the opening match and set the tone. Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth won the next match, and the Americans were on their way. They wound up with a 4-1 lead over an outmanned International team. The lone point for the visitors came from Si Woo Kim and Cameron Davis. Max Homa and Tony Finau won the final hole in the final match to add to the American lead at Quail Hollow.

GENEVA (AP) — Marijuana use is to stay banned at sports events. The World Anti-Doping Agency has resisted calls to change its status on the list of prohibited substances. The agency was asked to review the status of THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, after the case of United States sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson. She did not go to the Tokyo Olympics last year after testing positive at the trials meet where she won the 100 meters. WADA did decide to ban the opiate tramadol from use in competitions starting in January 2024. Tramadol use has been an issue in cycling.

Sports Headlines for Friday

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Brent Venables always has spoken highly of Kansas State, where he played linebacker and got his coaching start as an assistant under Bill Snyder.

He will face the Wildcats as head coach for the first time on Saturday, and he’s focused solely on getting the win for his sixth-ranked Sooners (3-0) in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

“I know I’m the head coach, but getting ready for a game is the same,” Venables said. “I look at the scheme and the DNA more than I do at the logos. All the other dynamic things that are interesting everyone else are not interesting to me, with all due respect.”

He still appreciates what Kansas State did for him, dating all the way back to his playing days in 1991 and 1992 and his time on Snyder's staff from 1993 to 1998.

“I reflect about my opportunities and my relationships all the time,” he said. “When I think about Kansas State, I go back to when I played there, the mentors I had and the wonderful experience I had there in Manhattan. But it’s a long time ago.”

He even spoke to the 82-year-old Snyder after last week’s 49-14 win at Nebraska.

“After the game, he said, ‘Great job getting No. 3, now go get No. 4,’” he said. “Maybe an hour later, he said, ‘Except not this week.’ He must have checked the schedule. He said, ‘Not against us.’ I love the loyalty. No surprise. Amazing man.”

Oklahoma has dominated the Big 12 for years, but the Wildcats defeated the Sooners in 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2020. Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said there’s just a few players left from the 2020 team, so that win doesn’t matter.

“There’s not enough guys from 2020,” he said. “And that was such a strange year. I mean, there was nobody in the stands at all. Some of our guys just being there (in 2020) I think, will help. But it’ll be a different crowd this year.”

Even though Kansas State is coming off a surprising 17 -10 loss to Tulane, Klieman has a positive outlook.

“I know we’re going into a tough situation, guys, as far as coming off a loss and going against Oklahoma, who’s a terrific football team,” he said. “We need to continue to get better and have an opportunity in the fourth quarter to win the game.”

Oklahoma faced Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez when he was at Nebraska last year, and he passed for 289 yards and a touchdown in a 23-16 loss in Norman.

Martinez has passed for 304 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions this season in three games. Klieman said he’s being too careful.

“He would agree that he’s got to cut it loose and rip it,” Klieman said. “And if a mistake’s made, a mistake’s made. But be aggressive in what you see and what you believe. And we’ve seen that in fall camp and now we’ve just got to see it on a Saturday.”

Klieman said linebacker Shawn Robinson stepped away from the team for personal reasons and was not kicked off the team. Robinson never played after transferring from Missouri.

Tulsa, OK- The Wind Surge finished off the Tulsa Drillers 11-1 on Thursday night as the Surge swept the Drillers in the Divisional series to advance to the Texas League Championship Series where they will play the winner of Frisco/San Antonio.

The Surge struck first as Jair Camargo hit a two-run homer to give Wichita a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Camargo finished three for five with five RBIs in the game.

The Drillers responded in the bottom of the first as Andy Pages hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory and allowed Leonel Valera to score and cut the deficit in half to 2-1.

The Surge added another run in the third inning courtesy of Camargo’s second home run of the night to score Edouard Julien and extend the lead to 4-1.

The Surge scored five runs in the fifth inning as DaShawn Keirsey Jr. hit Wichita’s third homer of the night on a solo shot to right field and Camargo followed with a two-run RBI single. Alex Isola hit a two-out single that scored two more runs and gave the Surge a commanding 8-1 lead.

Camargo and Keirsey Jr. each hit home runs in both playoff matchups against Tulsa… The Surge will play for the Texas League championship for the second straight year.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonathan Heasley pitched six innings of two-hit ball, Edward Oliveras and Drew Waters homered, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 on Thursday to complete their three-game series sweep.

Salvador Perez also drove in a run for Kansas City, extending his streak to seven straight games with an RBI, and Brad Keller finished off three innings of no-hit ball by the bullpen for his first career save.

“Much better version of baseball,” said Royals manager Mike Matheny, who celebrated his 52nd birthday in fine fashion Thursday. “The aim is always to win, but you put a couple of wins together against a team that you haven't had success against and you see the confidence starting to swell.”

The first home sweep of at least three games by the Royals since July 2021 also probably ended the fading playoff hopes of the Twins, who two weeks ago were in the midst of an AL Central race but lost eight of nine on their road trip.

“I mean, to be very frank about it, disappointing and about as low on the scale as you can imagine,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “The baserunners just weren’t there for us. The opportunities weren’t there.”

Minnesota rookie Josh Winder (4-5) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Caleb Hamilton drove in the only run for the Twins, who limp home to wrap up the season having lost 17 of their last 20 road games.

“You have to continue to play the same way. You have to continue to fight the same way,” Baldelli said.

Heasley (4-8) also was dominant in his previous start in Boston, allowing two hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings, and the 25-year-old picked up where he left off against Minnesota. Heasley retired his first 10 batters, striking out four of the first five, and followed a base hit by Carlos Correa by retiring the next two to end the inning.

“I thought he really built off what he did the last time,” Matheny said. “I do believe that he's found something.”

Correa thought he had given the Twins the lead in the first, when he drove a pitch into the right-field seats. But umpire Manny Gonzalez ruled that the ball skirted the pole foul and there was not enough evidence to overrule his call.

The Royals took the lead in the third when Bobby Witt Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Perez's shattered-bat single, then made it 2-0 in the fourth when Oliveras drove a 3-2 pitch into the left-field seats.

Waters added his no-doubt shot leading off the fifth, and Nate Eaton drove in an insurance run in the eighth.

MJ Melendez, who homered in each of the previous two games, nearly joined the Royals' home run party twice. He drove a pitch to the center-field warning track leading off the game and another to the wall in right in the third.

“He was so baffled both times,” Matheny said. “He was certain, as we all were, that both of those balls were gone.”

The first-inning double by Witt was his 55th extra-base hit this season, matching Alex Gordon for the most by a first-year player in team history. Witt also stole his 28th base, breaking a tie with Carlos Beltran for third among Royals rookies.

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team faces another rugged weekend schedule, but will do so inside the Hutchinson Sports Arena this weekend.

No. 16 Hutchinson and eighth other teams from Kansas, Missouri and Iowa make up the field for the 2022 Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday and Saturday. Friday matches begin at 10 a.m. and Saturday matches begin at 9 a.m.

The 2022 Blue Dragon Classic field features four nationally ranked teams – No. 16 Hutchinson, No. 2 Indian Hills, No. 8 Trinity Valley and No. 17 Mineral Area. Both Butler and MSU-West Plains are receiving votes in this week’s NJCAA Rankings. Jefferson College and Iowa Western started the season in the national rankings. Jayhawk West rival Cloud County is the ninth team in the tournament field.

The Blue Dragons play a pair of nationally ranked opponents and get two rematches in their four matches this weekend.

Hutchinson will open with Jefferson College at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Dragons were swept by then then-No. 12 Vikings on opening weekend at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The Blue Dragons play host to Iowa Western at 6 p.m. on Friday. Also at the Reiver Classic, the Blue Dragons won a five-set thriller with the defending national champions and preseason-No. 1 ranked Reivers in August.

Hutchinson plays No. 8 Trinity Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday and No. 17 Mineral Area at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons enter the weekend at 17-5 after a four-set victory over Garden City on Wednesday in the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons are 3-5 this season against nationally ranked opponents. The Blue Dragon Classic is Hutchinson’s fourth tournament this season. The Dragons are 8-4 in weekend classics this season.

Admission for the Blue Dragon Classic is $10 daily. All matches will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.
