The Hutchinson Community College football team remains No. 1 in the latest NJCAA Division I national rankings, which were released Monday. It's the fifth week in a row the Blue Dragons are ranked at the top of the poll.

The Blue Dragons solidified a third straight Jayhawk conference championship by defeating Independence 53-0 Saturday, setting up a regular season finale road test in Council Bluffs, Iowa this Saturday against Iowa Western, who lost to Coffeyville 23-7 last week, earned its first loss of the season and dropped to No. 4 in this week's rankings.

Hutchinson travels to Iowa Western for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Iowa Western's loss allowed Northwest Mississippi to climb to No. 2 and Trinity Valley to No. 3. Northwest Mississippi is in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference playoff title game against now No. 12 East Mississippi. Trinity Valley won the Southwest Junior College Football Conference regular season title and is the one seed in the conference playoffs. The Cardinals will play Kilgore, who is now No. 15, this Saturday in the conference semis.

Snow College, the 2021 national runner-up, remained on the outside looking in at No. 5 with Coffeyville making the jump from No. 8 to No. 6.

Butler came in at No. 13 and Garden City received votes.

The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 6 in the week 1 NJCAA Division I national rankings, which were released Monday. Hutchinson jumped into the top 10 from No. 13 in the preseason rankings after scoring over 110 points in each of its first three games, beating Fort Scott 124-101, previous No. 7 Triton 113-105, and Northeastern Oklahoma 117-107.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high 29 points in the season-opening win over Fort Scott as the Blue Dragons also hit 14 3-pointers, which tied a Blue Dragon single-game record. In the Triton win, redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;poured in a career-high 34 points, 20 coming in the second half on the primetime slot on opening night of the BSN Sports Tipoff Classic. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frierson_tyreece_qllh">Ty Frierson</a>&nbsp;hit six 3-pointers in the win over NEO to move the Blue Dragons to 3-0.

Coffeyville, the 2020 national champion, came in at No. 12. Butler climbed from preseason ranking No. 23 to No. 18. Seward County is ranked 21. Garden City, Cowley, and Dodge City received votes.

Last year's national champion Northwest Florida State is 3-0 and is No. 1 in the poll.

The Blue Dragon men hit the road to Great Bend for the Cougar Booster Club Classic Friday and Saturday. The Blue Dragons open the two-day classic at 3 p.m. Friday against Victoria College and cap off the weekend at 3 p.m. Saturday against Wilbur Wright College.

After a dominant opening week, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team is in the top 5 in the first NJCAA Division I national rankings.

The Blue Dragons came in at No. 5 in the first week of the national poll, which was released Monday. The Blue Dragons are 3-0 to start the season.

The last time the Blue Dragon women were ranked in the top 5 was back in February 2020 when they were No. 5.&nbsp;

Hutchinson went 2-0 in its BSN Sports Tipoff Classic with sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;guiding the Blue Dragons to an 84-48 win over Mineral Area behind her game-high 21 points as well as the team shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor. The Blue Dragons closed out the opening weekend with an 84-61 romp over Northeastern Oklahoma where freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;posted 14 points and seven assists. Three players scored in double figures – Williams with 21 points and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/howard_kali_o73g">Kali Howard</a>&nbsp;with 18.

The Blue Dragons also posted an 88-44 win over Bethany College JV.

Trinity Valley is No. 1 in the rankings with preseason No. 1 Tyler falling to No. 21 and former No. 2 Shelton State dropping to 23. Northwest Florida State is No. 2, Blinn is No. 3, and South Plains is No. 4. Other Jayhawk conference teams ranked are Barton at No. 18, and Dodge City received votes.

This weekend, John Ontjes' group heads to Great Bend for the two-day Cougar Booster Club Classic where the Blue Dragons will play Labette at 1 p.m. Friday and Redlands at 1 p.m. Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are willing to do whatever it takes to win a game. And that includes bailing entirely on the run game and having Mahomes air it out nearly 70 times. It worked on Sunday night, when the Chiefs rallied from 17-9 deficit in the fourth quarter and escaped with a 20-17 victory in overtime. But the reason Mahomes threw the ball nearly 70 times was that they almost entirely abandoned the run. He had six carries for 63 yards on scrambles, but the rest of the Chiefs ran 13 times for 14 yards. Chiefs coach Andy Reid knows his QB will need more help going forward.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Kenyan Drake rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Houston had an interception to go with his third straight multiple-sack game, and the Baltimore Ravens beat the New Orleans Saints 27-13. Lamar Jackson passed for a touchdown and frustrated New Orleans with his mobility, rushing for 82 yards and exhibiting an array of jump cuts and spin moves. Baltimore won its third straight and remained atop the AFC North at 6-3, one game ahead of Cincinnati. The Saints fell to 3-6 and were outclassed by a Baltimore team missing several offensive starters. The Ravens converted 9 of 15 third downs.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have hired former All-Pro center Jeff Saturday as interim coach after firing coach Frank Reich. The move came after another lackluster offensive performance in the team’s third consecutive loss. The Colts announced the moves one day after an ugly 26-3 loss at New England. Reich was hired in 2018 after serving as offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles. He led the Colts to the playoffs in two of his first four seasons. Saturday's only coaching experience came at a Georgia high school. He's served as a team consultant and an ESPN commentator most recently.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen is nursing a sore right throwing elbow, leaving cause for concern over the Buffalo Bills starter’s status against the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings this weekend. Coach Sean McDermott would only say he’s awaiting the results of tests to determine the severity of the injury sustained a day earlier in a 20-17 loss to the New York Jets. McDermott said it was premature to say whether Allen could practice this week or play before adding he would never count him out. If Allen is unavailable for this weekend, the AFC-leading Bills would turn to veteran backup Case Keenum to face the Vikings.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalen Wilson had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Gradey Dick added 23 points in his debut, and No. 5 Kansas began defense of its national championship without suspended coach Bill Self in an 89-64 rout of Omaha. Self served the first of a four-game punishment along with assistant Kurtis Townsend as part of the fallout from a 2017 federal investigation into college basketball corruption. Bobby Pettiford Jr. added 13 points and Dajuan Harris had 11 points and eight assists for the Jayhawks. Jaeden Marshall scored 13 points and Luke Jungers had 12 for the Mavericks.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Markquis Nowell scored 14 points apiece and Kansas State opened the season under new coach Jerome Tang with a 93-59 romp over UT Rio Grande Valley. Tang took over the Wildcats’ program after serving as an assistant to Scott Drew at Baylor from 2003-2022. Nowell sank all three of his 3-point shots and added seven assists and four steals for the Wildcats, who made 12 of 27 from beyond the arc (44.4%). Tomlin added a team-high eight rebounds. Justin Johnson totaled 20 points to lead the Vaqueros.

The transfer from Iowa State made six of eight shots and had five rebounds. Ze'Rik Onyema scored 10 points to lead UTEP. The Miners got within eight points in the second half before Texas pulled away late behind Hunter. Texas this season moved to the $375 million Moody Center on the edge of campus after 45 years in the Frank Erwin Center.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Adam Flagler scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures for fifth-ranked Baylor, which overwhelmed Mississippi Valley State 117-53. The Bears opened their 20th season with coach Scott Drew. Flagler is a preseason All-Big 12 pick who also was the Bears’ leading scorer last season. He added eight assists and one of his four 3-pointers started a 24-0 run midway through the first half. Alvin Stredic scored 14 points for Mississippi Valley State in its first game for new coach George Ivory.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Mike Miles hit a long 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining to finally put No. 14 TCU ahead to stay in a 73-72 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The only way to get the pace up is to create some offense from your defense, rebound the basketball. I thought in the second half the positive for me was just seeing the players really share the ball. We really saw some extra passes. We saw some players knock some threes down and thought it was a little bit better in the second half." On what he's learned in his 600 wins… "My wife would tell you not much, I'm a slow learner. I just love coaching. I don't think the 18 to 22 year olds have changed that much. I think the world has changed in some areas but they haven't changed. They still want the same things. They want to have fun in college, they want to get a degree, they want to have fun playing basketball, they want to compete. None of those things have really changed. Coaching them has changed because a lot of things in their world are different than when I started coaching. I enjoy being around this age group, my wife and I included. She's got 600 wins too so we've enjoyed every bit of being on college campuses our entire career, and I've loved every bit of it." On the defense tonight… "I thought it was okay. I thought too often we were late on some calls, I still think we're trying to grow in that area of seeing things when it's not drill work. They're seeing things good in drill work but when it's happening on the floor, they're maybe not seeing it as quick as they need to. I do think that in the first half they were getting us pretty deep in the first and second quarter so they were getting a lot of step through moves, a lot of getting to the foul line. We talked about stopping them earlier, you look at the shooting percentage in the second half for Central Arkansas, that's where I thought the biggest improvement came." On his 600th career win… "I'm competitive. Honestly, when I first got into coaching I wanted to win every game, I kind of couldn't figure out when it would be okay to lose. You're in it long enough that you lose some and you win some but I do take pride in the fact that during my career, my assistant coaches, the players that we've recruited have all rallied to have good seasons and play in the postseason. We're not like baseball where they count everything, but I think as you are in the profession longer you learn to appreciate it a little bit more. I've really enjoyed my time here at K State. I've really enjoyed the fan base here. I was actually excited that it was a doubleheader opportunity because I just felt like for our players to play the first game where they might have some fans here that don't normally see a women's basketball game, that it would be fun for them to have the student crowd that was here the second half and even the ones that showed up for the first. That really didn't have anything to do with the 600 but it had to do with their first game. For me, I'm just glad it's over with." LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;— In the 2022-23 season opener, the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks won their 50th straight home opener by defeating the Omaha Mavericks 89-64 in Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night. Freshman Gradey Dick led KU with 23 points in his first career game, while redshirt junior Jalen Wilson posted a double-double with 19 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and a career-high seven assists in the victory.

Omaha (0-1) cut its 13-point halftime deficit down to seven points by making the score 50-43 with 16:55 left in the second half. Kansas would not let it get any closer than that for the remainder of the game.

Kansas went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:21 to push the score to 60-43, which included electrifying dunks by redshirt senior Kevin McCullar Jr. and Dick. KU would go on another unanswered run a short time later, scoring 15 straight points. Dick, sophomore Bobby Pettiford Jr. and redshirt junior Dajuan Harris Jr. each hit three-pointers during a 3:30 stretch to make the score 83-55 with just more than five minutes to play.

KU had five players score in double figures with Dick (23), Wilson (19), Pettiford Jr. (13), Harris Jr. (11) and McCullar Jr. (10) all reaching double-digits. The Jayhawks shot 36-for-69 (52.2 percent) from the field and 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) from beyond the arc. Dick’s 23 points are the most by a KU freshman in his debut since Xavier Henry scored 27 points to open the 2009-10 season.

KU assisted on 24 of its 36 made baskets, with Harris Jr. dishing out a career-high-tying eight assists and Wilson finishing with a new career high of seven assists. Kansas also held a 43-28 edge on rebounds over the Mavericks, which included 16 offensive rebounds. Sophomore KJ Adams Jr. had a career-high nine rebounds, eight of which were offensive rebounds.

Kansas (1-0) will conclude its two-game homestand when it plays host to North Dakota State on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. (Central). The game will be televised on Big 12 NOW via ESPN+.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State ushered in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/jerome-tang/1856">Jerome Tang</a>&nbsp;era with an emphatic 93-59 victory over UTRGV on Monday night before an energetic crowd of 7,635 fans at Bramlage Coliseum, as six Wildcats scored in double figures en route to helping the team post their most points in an opener since 2014. Tang, who was hired as K-State's 25th&nbsp;head men's basketball coach on March 21 after spending 19 seasons (2003-22) helping build Baylor into a national powerhouse as an assistant and associate head coach, was engulfed and splashed by his new team in the locker room following his first official victory. &nbsp; "Yeah, I got doused pretty good," said Tang. "I kind of wasn't expecting it. I was just thinking about okay, 'What are the three things I need to tell them so they can get out of here and go celebrate themselves and move on to the next thing,' and then I saw bottles and I was like 'Oh man here it comes.' I enjoyed it with them." Fifth-year senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/markquis-nowell/9650">Markquis Nowell</a>&nbsp;and junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/nae-qwan-tomlin/9662">Nae'Qwan Tomlin</a>&nbsp;each had 14 points to lead the Wildcats (1-0), while fifth-year senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/keyontae-johnson/9899">Keyontae Johnson</a>&nbsp;scored 13 points in his triumph return to college basketball after a near two-year absence from medical emergency on Dec. 12, 2020. "I'm feeling good, just thanking God every day for giving me the opportunity to get here and play again just staying patient," said Johnson. "Before the game, I was a little emotional, but I knew the game was going to go so I had to keep going, just play and lay everything out for my team." Another fifth year&nbsp;Abayomi "Baybe" Iyiola&nbsp;posted 12 points and 5 rebounds off the bench, while senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/desi-sills/9686">Desi Sills</a>&nbsp;and junior&nbsp;Ismael (Ish) Massoud&nbsp;each added 10 points. K-State was electric on both ends of the court to start the game, jumping out to a 15-3 advantage behind 3-pointers from Nowell, Massoud and Johnson. The lead ballooned to as many as 30 in the first half, as the Wildcats capped off their 52-point opening half with a 3-pointer from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tykei-greene/9733">Tykei Greene</a>&nbsp;at the buzzer. Tang, who was hired as K-State's 25th&nbsp;head men's basketball coach on March 21 after spending 19 seasons (2003-22) helping build Baylor into a national powerhouse as an assistant and associate head coach, was engulfed and splashed by his new team in the locker room following his first official victory. &nbsp; "Yeah, I got doused pretty good," said Tang. "I kind of wasn't expecting it. I was just thinking about okay, 'What are the three things I need to tell them so they can get out of here and go celebrate themselves and move on to the next thing,' and then I saw bottles and I was like 'Oh man here it comes.' I enjoyed it with them." "I'm feeling good, just thanking God every day for giving me the opportunity to get here and play again just staying patient," said Johnson. "Before the game, I was a little emotional, but I knew the game was going to go so I had to keep going, just play and lay everything out for my team." The 93 points were the most by a K-State team in a season opener since scoring 98 against Southern Utah on Nov. 14, 2014, while they are fourth-most in an opener in the last 25 seasons. K-State was electric on both ends of the court to start the game, jumping out to a 15-3 advantage behind 3-pointers from Nowell, Massoud and Johnson. The lead ballooned to as many as 30 in the first half, as the Wildcats capped off their 52-point opening half with a 3-pointer from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tykei-greene/9733">Tykei Greene</a>&nbsp;at the buzzer. The team connected on 51.5 percent (17-of-33) in the first half, including 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc. The lead grew to as many as 36 in the second half after Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws with just over 5 minutes to play. For the game, K-State connected on 45.5 percent (30-of-66), including 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from 3-point range, and made 72.4 percent (21-of-29) of their free throws. The Wildcats had assists on 25 of their 30 made baskets. On the defensive end, the team held UTRGV (0-1) to just 39.2 percent (20-of-51) shooting, including 29.2 percent (7-of-24) in the first half. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes was probably having flashbacks Sunday night to his days at Texas Tech, when he would scramble around like a kid playing sandlot football while routinely throwing the ball 60-plus times in a game.

The Chiefs needed all of it — every run, every throw, every yard — to rally past the Tennessee Titans.

Mahomes finished 43 of 68 for 446 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for the tying score and 2-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, before Harrison Butker atoned for two earlier misses by drilling the go-ahead field goal in overtime and lifting the Chiefs to the 20-17 victory.

“I did not know I threw that many,” Mahomes said with a smile, “but yeah, Texas Tech, I threw a couple, so I'm able to do it.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid improved to 21-3 coming off a bye by beating a franchise that has long been his nemesis. He was just 2-9 against the Titans — heck, Reid has three wins against the Chiefs — including a 27-3 loss in Nashville last year.

It was only the second win for Kansas City (6-2) in its last seven games against the Titans.

“You have to be able to win a game like that," Reid said, “where everything isn't just perfect, and your emotions are up and down and you have to fight through. We were so close on so many plays. Step up and let's go.”

Things were spiraling toward another disappointment the way Derrick Henry was chewing up yardage against the Kansas City defense, and the way the Titans (5-3) were shutting down Mahomes and Co. into the fourth quarter.

Indeed, the Chiefs were trailing 17-9 and time was running out when they took over at their own 7-yard line. But in vintage Mahomes fashion, he willed his team downfield. His 20-yard scramble on third-and-17 kept the drive going, and his third-and-9 touchdown scramble along with his 2-point conversion run knotted the game with 2:56 to go.

After the Chiefs won the overtime coin toss, the Titans nearly stopped them, only for Noah Gray to make a nifty third-down catch. Then, Mahomes hit JuJu Smith-Schuster on fourth down to keep the drive alive — and the clock moving.

Butker drilled his 28-yarder to give Kansas City the lead with 4:04 left in overtime.

The Chiefs proceeded to stuff Henry, then sacked Titans rookie Malik Willis on back-to-back plays, before batting down his fourth-down throw to end the game and send fireworks flying into the sky above Arrowhead Stadium.

“When you get to those end of the game situations,” Mahomes said, “you have to try to go out there and make it happen.”

Henry finished with 115 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Titans. But he didn't get a whole lot of help from Willis, who got his second start in place of the injured Ryan Tannehill, and was just 5 of 16 for 80 yards.

“I'm very disappointed. I feel terrible for the players,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “They compete, and put so much into this, and play through pain and discomfort and any situation. I'm lucky to coach them. They fight.”

The Chiefs figured the best way to shut down Henry, who had run for 219 yards and two touchdowns last week against Houston, was to keep him off the field. They opened the game with a 15-play march that took up 8 1/2 minutes and ended in a field goal, then forced a punt and went 79 yards with Mahomes finding Hardman for the touchdown.

All told, the Chiefs held the ball nearly 13 of the 15 minutes in the first quarter.

The Titans finally got going in the second, and it was Willis using his legs to get Kansas City off balance. The fleet-footed rookie twice scrambled for good yardage before Henry turned a direct snap into a 4-yard TD run.

After forcing a punt, Henry went to work again. He slipped through the line untouched and was finally dragged down 56 yards later. Then, the 247-pound running back pounded into the end zone to give the Titans a 14-9 lead.

It was Henry's 74th career touchdown run, moving him past Earl Campbell for the most in franchise history.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, were incapable of running the ball. And with the Titans no longer worried about stopping the rush, they began to relentlessly pressure Mahomes. Denico Autry's first sack forced a punt, then his second on third-and-1 near midfield prevented Kansas City from getting points just before halftime.

The Titans eventually extended the lead when Mahomes was picked off by rookie Roger McCreary, setting up Randy Bullock's 44-yard field goal. But their own offense started to fizzle, and despite Butker's missed field goal — he also missed an earlier extra point — the Chiefs managed to get the late touchdown they needed to force overtime.

“It was a struggle,” Reid said. “We were up and down and the guys hung together.”

Tannehill was limited in practice Wednesday and Friday but did not practice at all Thursday and was questionable for the game. He tried warming up but never planted his ailing ankle before walking off the field with Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel about two hours before kickoff. He was made inactive 30 minutes later.

Titans: FS Josh Thompson left in the second half with a knee injury. LB Bud Dupree left with a hip injury.

Chiefs: CB Jaylen Watson landed awkwardly on his neck in the first half, though he eventually returned to the game.

The Titans return home to face Denver on Sunday.

(AP) — The Jets’ defense shut down Josh Allen, Zach Wilson threw a touchdown pass and Greg Zuerlein kicked a go-ahead 28-yard field goal with 1:43 remaining to lift the New York Jets to a stunning 20-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Allen got the ball with a chance to tie or win but couldn’t manage much against the Jets. His deep desperation pass to Gabe Davis was knocked away by rookie Sauce Gardner. It also ended the Bills’ four-game winning streak. The Jets even overcame a brief delay in the second half when an overhead camera malfunctioned.

MANHATTAN, Kan. -&nbsp;Adrian Martinez accounted for 381 total yards and three touchdowns and No. 13 Kansas State battled back from a 21-point deficit to provide a nail-biting finish against Texas, but a turnover with 24 seconds left sealed the Wildcats' fate in a 34-27 loss in front of a sellout crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.&nbsp;

Martinez threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns and one interception, but the senior transfer quarterback appeared to try to do too much when he checked down on his progression in the pocket and tried to make a play late. Keondre Coburn stripped the ball and Jaylan Ford recovered at the Texas 39-yard line to thwart the Wildcats' chances to tie the game and match the largest comeback in school history. "Probably a little bit of trying to do too much," Martinez said. "I got it batted away." K-State, 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference, suffered its sixth-straight loss to Texas, 6-3 and 4-2, and saw sole possession of second place in the league standings batted away. K-State now shares second place with Texas and Baylor, which the Wildcats face next Saturday in Waco. "(Our players) are down for sure," K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1637">Chris Klieman</a>&nbsp;said. "We've got a bunch of kids that want to win and have a chance to play in December. We've got great character in that room and really good leaders. We've got to bounce back. It doesn't get any easier." It certainly wasn't easy against the Longhorns. Texas took a 31-10 lead into halftime behind a dominant rushing attack before the Wildcats began their charge. K-State gave up its most first-half points of the season, then outscored the Longhorns, 17-3, in the final two quarters. Texas came off a bye week following a loss to Oklahoma State in which it squandered a 31-17 lead against the Cowboys. The Longhorns were able to bounce back behind the legs of All-America candidate Bijan Robinson, who gashed the Wildcats for 209 rushing yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. K-State had an ace of its own in returning Consensus All-American&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/deuce-vaughn/7993">Deuce Vaughn</a>, who had 19 carries for 73 yards. He tied Saquan Barkley of Penn State as the fastest Power 5 player to reach 3,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards since 1996. Both did so in just 32 games. Vaughn, who has 3,021 career rushing yards, also moved past John Hubert into No. 2 all-time at K-State, trailing only Darren Sproles. Vaughn also had seven catches for 86 yards and one touchdown, racing into the end zone on a 28-yard catch-and-run play for the Wildcats' opening score. However, those feats were bittersweet. "We had a lot of execution (issues) on our part that needs to be handled," Vaughn said, "and that's for all of us, myself included." K-State, which saw Texas score on each of its first three possessions and score on five of its first six, mounted a valiant comeback behind the arm and legs of Martinez, who rushed for a 1-yard score and hit a wide-open&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/kade-warner/8130">Kade Warner</a>&nbsp;for a 25-yard touchdown across the middle of the field to slice its deficit to 31-24. "I was open enough," Warner said. "When you have Adrian back there, you're always open. He made a fantastic throw." It was Martinez's first action since leaving after just the opening series of a 38-28 loss at No. 8 TCU on October 22 with an apparent leg injury. "I'm really happy to be back and thankful for this opportunity," Martinez said. "Getting back on the field doing what I love is something to be thankful for." Martinez and K-State are thankful for another opportunity to play on. The Wildcats finish out their regular season at Baylor and at West Virginia before facing Kansas in Manhattan. They are still in contention for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. "We expect to win," Martinez said, "so anytime you lose, there's disappointment, and we all understand that. (Klieman) spoke about the character of this team and how we bounced back in this football game and didn't quit. We're going to use that moving forward, and next week, and understand in this league, shoot, every game is a fight. Obviously, we have a big one against Baylor and our minds will be on that come Sunday and Monday." K-State spent its first half with its mind on halting Texas. K-State outgained Texas, 468-466, for the game but never led on the scoreboard in a matchup that pitted Robinson against Vaughn. Robinson started things off with a 36-yard touchdown run and Vaughn answered with his long touchdown catch before the Longhorns pulled ahead and the Wildcats were forced to play catchup the rest of the way. "They had a really good plan and executed it well in the first half," Klieman said. "It took us a while to make our adjustments, but I'm proud of our guys and the resolve they showed. I told our guys in the locker room after the game that we're a team of extremely high-character guys and great leadership within that room to give us a chance to have the football with under 2 minutes left to have a chance to tie after how the first half went. That's a credit to our guys. "We didn't play very well in the first half, especially on defense. We struggled to get stops, we couldn't tackle Robinson. He's a terrific, terrific back." K-State's up-and-down night began from the start as the Longhorns scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions —&nbsp;a 36-yard rush by Robinson, a 9-yard run by Roschon Johnson and a 13-yard reception by Xavier Worthy to cap scoring drives that each covered 75 yards. K-State, 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference, suffered its sixth-straight loss to Texas, 6-3 and 4-2, and saw sole possession of second place in the league standings batted away. K-State now shares second place with Texas and Baylor, which the Wildcats face next Saturday in Waco. "(Our players) are down for sure," K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1637">Chris Klieman</a>&nbsp;said. "We've got a bunch of kids that want to win and have a chance to play in December. We've got great character in that room and really good leaders. We've got to bounce back. It doesn't get any easier." It certainly wasn't easy against the Longhorns. Texas took a 31-10 lead into halftime behind a dominant rushing attack before the Wildcats began their charge. K-State gave up its most first-half points of the season, then outscored the Longhorns, 17-3, in the final two quarters. Texas came off a bye week following a loss to Oklahoma State in which it squandered a 31-17 lead against the Cowboys. The Longhorns were able to bounce back behind the legs of All-America candidate Bijan Robinson, who gashed the Wildcats for 209 rushing yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. K-State had an ace of its own in returning Consensus All-American&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/deuce-vaughn/7993">Deuce Vaughn</a>, who had 19 carries for 73 yards. He tied Saquan Barkley of Penn State as the fastest Power 5 player to reach 3,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards since 1996. Both did so in just 32 games. Vaughn, who has 3,021 career rushing yards, also moved past John Hubert into No. 2 all-time at K-State, trailing only Darren Sproles. Vaughn also had seven catches for 86 yards and one touchdown, racing into the end zone on a 28-yard catch-and-run play for the Wildcats' opening score. However, those feats were bittersweet. "We had a lot of execution (issues) on our part that needs to be handled," Vaughn said, "and that's for all of us, myself included." K-State, which saw Texas score on each of its first three possessions and score on five of its first six, mounted a valiant comeback behind the arm and legs of Martinez, who rushed for a 1-yard score and hit a wide-open&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/kade-warner/8130">Kade Warner</a>&nbsp;for a 25-yard touchdown across the middle of the field to slice its deficit to 31-24. "I was open enough," Warner said. "When you have Adrian back there, you're always open. He made a fantastic throw." It was Martinez's first action since leaving after just the opening series of a 38-28 loss at No. 8 TCU on October 22 with an apparent leg injury. Junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/will-howard/7941">Will Howard</a>&nbsp;started in a 48-0 shutout win over No. 9 Oklahoma State last Saturday. "I'm really happy to be back and thankful for this opportunity," Martinez said. "Getting back on the field doing what I love is something to be thankful for." Martinez and K-State are thankful for another opportunity to play on. The Wildcats finish out their regular season at Baylor and at West Virginia before facing Kansas in Manhattan. They are still in contention for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. "We expect to win," Martinez said, "so anytime you lose, there's disappointment, and we all understand that. (Klieman) spoke about the character of this team and how we bounced back in this football game and didn't quit. We're going to use that moving forward, and next week, and understand in this league, shoot, every game is a fight. Obviously, we have a big one against Baylor and our minds will be on that come Sunday and Monday." K-State spent its first half with its mind on halting Texas. K-State outgained Texas, 468-466, for the game but never led on the scoreboard in a matchup that pitted Robinson against Vaughn. Robinson started things off with a 36-yard touchdown run and Vaughn answered with his long touchdown catch before the Longhorns pulled ahead and the Wildcats were forced to play catchup the rest of the way. "They had a really good plan and executed it well in the first half," Klieman said. "It took us a while to make our adjustments, but I'm proud of our guys and the resolve they showed. I told our guys in the locker room after the game that we're a team of extremely high-character guys and great leadership within that room to give us a chance to have the football with under 2 minutes left to have a chance to tie after how the first half went. That's a credit to our guys. "We didn't play very well in the first half, especially on defense. We struggled to get stops, we couldn't tackle Robinson. He's a terrific, terrific back." K-State's up-and-down night began from the start as the Longhorns scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions —&nbsp;a 36-yard rush by Robinson, a 9-yard run by Roschon Johnson and a 13-yard reception by Xavier Worthy to cap scoring drives that each covered 75 yards. The Wildcats initially fired back with a seven-play, 65-yard drive in which Martinez hit Vaughn across the middle for a 28-yard catch-and-run score, which tied the score at 7-7 with 8:41 left in the first quarter, but for as much as the Wildcats scratched, their deficit continued to swell. However, the Wildcats fell short in their attempt to capitalize off the miscue, and saw their drive stall on fourth down at the Texas 16-yard line. Martinez threw a perfect pass to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/phillip-brooks/7910">Phillip Brooks</a>&nbsp;but cornerback Jahdae Barron caused an incompletion in the back corner of the end zone. Texas struck again, this time with Robinson skating 68 yards down the Wildcats' sideline on a 3rd-and-3 play from his own 23-yard line. That set up a 28-yard field goal by Bert Auburn. Martinez threw his first interception of the season two plays later —&nbsp;155 consecutive passes without a pick to start a season, a school record — and with less than a minute remaining until halftime. It was just enough time for the Longhorns to walk the ball down the field 27 yards, ending with quarterback Quinn Ewers hitting Worthy with a 3-yard touchdown catch, and K-State trailed 31-10 going into the locker room. "We've got to be able to own this — we made some mistakes as coaches and probably as players — and learn from it, and come back ready to go on Monday," Klieman said. "I'm proud of our guys. We have a lot of football in front of us and a lot of story left to write with this team."&nbsp;&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks became bowl eligible for the first time since 2008 with a 37-16 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at David Booth Memorial Stadium.&nbsp;The win is Kansas’ first against a ranked opponent since 2010, breaking a streak of 44-straight losses to ranked teams.&nbsp;

An excited Lawrence crowd of 43,306 saw Kansas improve to 6-3 and 3-3 in the Big 12, making Kansas bowl eligible for a possible 13th appearance in a bowl game in program history. Oklahoma State also dropped to 6-3 and 3-3 in the Big 12. The win over the Cowboys was the first victory by the Jayhawks over a ranked opponent at home since 2005.

Running back Devin Neal rushed for 224 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries, while adding 110 receiving yards on six catches. He became the first player in program history to rush for 200+ yards and have 100+ receiving yards in the same game. He is just the third Power 5 player since 1996 to have at least 220 rushing yards and 110 receiving yards in the same game.

"“I’m so happy for the guys that have been through a lot during their time. To see the locker room the way it is celebrating and so happy and for all the times it’s been tough…It says a lot about them. I’m happy for the fans and the staff, but for those guys that have worked through it in that group to play so well today, I’m proud.”"

On Oklahoma State’s first drive of the game, the Cowboys pushed the ball down the field 40 yards, however, cornerback Cobee Bryant, who missed the team’s most recent game against Baylor with an injury, intercepted a Cowboy pass to give the Jayhawks the ball on the Kansas 27 yard-line.

The Jayhawks didn’t waste any time getting into the endzone on their first drive. Led by Quarterback Jason Bean, Kansas went 73 yards on four plays in 1:32 to get on the scoreboard first. Neal ran for 55 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown rush into the right side of the endzone.&nbsp;

“Devin made a lot of plays in the passing and running game,” Leipold said. “It was the most physical he ran, as well. We’re going to need that.”

OSU started their second drive on their own 25 yard line, however, an interception by cornerback Ra’Mello Dotson ended the short drive. Dotson intercepted the ball at the Kansas 32-yard line and returned it 13 yards to put the Jayhawks on their own 45 yard line. The interception was Dotson’s second of the season. Nearing the end of the first quarter, the Jayhawks pushed the ball down the field 76 yards on 16 plays with the drive being capped with a 21-yard field goal by kicker Jacob Borcila.&nbsp;

The Jayhawk defense was able to keep Oklahoma State shutout in the first quarter, but the Cowboys were able to get their first score of the game in the second quarter. The Jayhawks, however, responded fast with a 49 second scoring drive. Bean rushed for a career-high 73 yards up the left side of the field for a Kansas touchdown.&nbsp;

Kansas ended a 47-yard OSU drive, with a fumble recovery by Lorenzo McCaskill. Kansas took advantage and responded with an 87-yard scoring drive. Lawrence Arnold caught an 8-yard pass from Bean in the left corner of the endzone over an OSU defender.&nbsp;

Jared Casey caught the first touchdown of the second half on a 2-yard pass in the back of the end zone from Bean.&nbsp;The score capped a fifteen-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:08 off the clock.&nbsp;

Oklahoma State responded with an 11-play, 54-yard drive that concluded with a 35 yard field goal. Kansas followed with a field goal off a 72-yard drive that was capped with a 20-yard kick of its own. The Cowboys were able to capitalize on a 10-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown.&nbsp;

The Cowboys remained scoreless for the rest of the game, while Kansas recorded another 3 points off a 31-yard field goal by&nbsp;Borcila. The Jayhawks tallied their third interception from Rich Miller, who returned it 34 yards to ice the game.

Bean finished 18 for 23 for 203 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Receiver Luke Grimm established a new career high with seven catches for 65 yards. Kenny Logan Jr., led the Jayhawks with eight tackles. Jereme Robinson finished with two tackles-for-loss, while Bryant had an interception, two pass breakups and a ½ tackle-for-loss.

The Jayhawks will now go for their seventh win on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Texas Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., and will be streamed by Big 12 Now on ESPN+.&nbsp;

HOUSTON (AP) — Yordan Alvarez hit a towering three-run homer and the Houston Astros clinched their second World Series title in six seasons with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6. That also gave 73-year-old manager Dusty Baker his first title in 25 seasons as a manager, the last three in Houston. This was Houston's second championship. The Astros also won in 2017, a title tarnished by their sign-stealing scandal. Alvarez's home run in the sixth inning put Houston ahead 3-1. Astros rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña was the World Series MVP. The 25-year-old star born in the Dominican Republic also was MVP of the AL Championship Series. Houston starter Framer Valdez won his second game in this World Series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs expect cornerback Trent McDuffie to return Sunday night against Tennessee. He's been out since the opener against Arizona, when the first-round pick hurt his hamstring. In fact, the Chiefs are so confident in McDuffie and fellow rookies Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams and Nazeeh Johnson that they traded veteran Rashad Fenton to the Falcons for a conditional draft pick this week. The only other cornerbacks on the roster, L'Jarius Sneed and Chris Lammons, are only in their third years in the league. That makes the Chiefs one of the youngest defensive backfields in the NFL.

(AP) — Bijan Robinson romped for 209 yards and a touchdown, Quinn Ewers threw for 197 yards and two more scores, and Texas held off No. 13 Kansas State 34-27 on Saturday night for the Longhorns’ sixth straight win over the Wildcats. Xavier Worthy had two touchdown catches and Roschon Johnson added a TD run for the Longhorns, who built a 31-10 halftime lead and then had to make a defensive stand in the closing minutes to preserve the victory. The Wildcats got the ball back with 4:26 left, but Adrian Martinez fumbled it away with 34 seconds left to seal the outcome.

The Cyclones (4-5, 1-5 Big 12) snapped a five-game losing streak and kept alive their hopes of playing in a bowl game for the sixth straight season. Dekkers, who finished 24-of-36 passing for 219 yards, engineered an 8-play, 94-yard drive that helped Iowa State seize control early in the fourth quarter. The Cyclones were helped by a roughing-the-punter penalty and boosted by Deon Silas’ 38-yard run before Hutchinson capped the drive with a 24-yard scoring catch.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Jayden Daniels ran for 25-yard touchdown in overtime and then found tight end Mason Taylor for a do-or-die 2-point conversion, and 15th-ranked LSU defeated No. 6 Alabama 32-31. The result gave first-year Tigers coach Brian Kelly his first victory over Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban. The riveting game included six second-half lead changes and a tying field goal by Alabama in the final minute. It gave LSU control of the SEC West with two league games remaining. Alabama lost its second conference game and saw its chances of returning to the College Football Playoff take a big hit. Fans stormed the field after LSU's first home victory over Alabama since 2010.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Stetson Bennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score and No. 1 Georgia shut down No. 2 Tennessee’s high-powered offense in dominating the Vols 27-13 in an SEC showdown of the nation’s top-ranked teams. The defending national champion Bulldogs led 27-6 before Tennessee scored its first touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Georgia put itself in position to move from No. 3 to the top spot in next week’s second College Football Playoff ranking. Tennessee was the initial No. 1, but Georgia showed it is still Top Dawg.

HOUSTON (AP) — Yordan Alvarez hit a towering three-run homer and the Houston Astros clinched their second World Series title in six seasons with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6. That also gave 73-year-old manager Dusty Baker his first title in 25 seasons as a manager, the last three in Houston. This was Houston's second championship. The Astros also won in 2017, a title tarnished by their sign-stealing scandal. Alvarez's home run in the sixth inning put Houston ahead 3-1. Astros rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña was the World Series MVP. The 25-year-old star born in the Dominican Republic also was MVP of the AL Championship Series. Houston starter Framer Valdez won his second game in this World Series.KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs expect cornerback Trent McDuffie to return Sunday night against Tennessee. He's been out since the opener against Arizona, when the first-round pick hurt his hamstring. In fact, the Chiefs are so confident in McDuffie and fellow rookies Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams and Nazeeh Johnson that they traded veteran Rashad Fenton to the Falcons for a conditional draft pick this week. The only other cornerbacks on the roster, L'Jarius Sneed and Chris Lammons, are only in their third years in the league. Sports Headlines for Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 13 Hutchinson (3-0) hit a record 18 triples in Tuesday night's opener against Fort Scott.

Saturday night in the arena, the Dragons made 16 threes, but started a chilly 1 of 7.

NEO (1-2) jumped out to an 11-2 lead on a Hutchinson high-octane offense that started the game on a 4:15 drought.

Aaron Potter's basket took the lid off the hoop as Hutchinson raced back to a 16-15 lead just five minutes later.

The Dragons led by as many as 14 in the first quarter, but took a 57-50 lead into the locker room.

Freshman Ty Frierson took over in the second half. After hitting just 1 of 4 three-pointers in the first half, Frierson nailed 5 of 8 in the second to lead Hutchinson with his career-high 25.

Frierson hit back-to-back threes and Jackson Leyba added another in just the first two minutes of the second frame.

After making five triples in the first half, Hutchinson dropped 11 in the last 20 minutes.

Four Dragons scored in double digits, led by Frierson's 25 (Aaron Franklin 20, Jackson Leyba 16 and Tony Green 12).

Franklin and Green both notched double-doubles as each pulled down 12 rebounds. The Dragons outrebounded NEO 63-39.

Hutchinson took 24 more shots from the field than NEO, but the Golden Norse stayed in the contest with 51.4% shooting.

Five NEO players scored in double digits. Three of them scored 22 or more.

Always Wright scored 25 and dished seven assists.

Jordan Johnson added 22, while Massai Graham had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds). Kelvin Spruill added 13 points.

Frierson and Leyba both had career days for the Blue Dragons.

Frierson set career highs in points (25) and three-pointers made (6).

Leyba had a career-high in points (16) and rebounds (7).

Hutchinson tallied 35 second-chance points on 30 offensive rebounds.

Despite building a 20-point advantage with 7:35 remaining, Hutchinson found itself in a battle with 2:23 left.

Over the course of five minutes, NEO cut the lead to 106-101. Twenty-four seconds later, the Golden Norse had the Dragon lead down to four.

With 1:12 left, Graham fouled out of the contest and Hutchinson went up 112-104. His replacement, Spruill, fouled out 22 seconds after that and the Dragons took an eight-point lead.

Hutchinson made 23 of 32 free throws on the night, including a crucial 8 0f 8 in the last two minutes to hang on for the victory.

Hutchinson plays Labette at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 9. This game was originally scheduled for Nov. 8, but will instead be played Wednesday.

Kali Howard just missed a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. She opened the season with back-to-back double-doubles, the first two of her career.

Journey Armstead notched 14 points thanks to 7 of 8 shooting from the charity stripe. She also dished seven assists.

The Golden Norse did not score any points off Dragon turnovers in the second half.

The Dragons added 20 points in the paint in the second half (32 total for the game) and outscored NEO by 15 in the third quarter.

The Dragons are back in action at home Wednesday, Nov. 9, against Washburn's JV. This game was originally scheduled for Nov. 8, but had to be moved because of a scheduling conflict.

🏀 WBB: No. 9 Dragons power past NEO with big third quarter

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson's defense scored before the offense ever had to take a snap.&nbsp;

Independence quarterback Greg Jones dropped back on the first third down of the game and Rodney Green Jr. knocked the ball loose.&nbsp;

The ball hit the turf and was reluctantly picked up by Ja'Mez Drummer, who stopped — thinking the ball was ruled incomplete.&nbsp;

Officials let the play finish as Drummer kicked it into gear for a scoop-six.&nbsp;

Independence challenged the ruling, since Jones had the ball behind his head, ready to throw, when the ball came out. Coach Jason Martin was hoping for an incomplete pass ruling, but officials confirmed the call.&nbsp;

The early 7-0 lead was just the beginning of Hutchinson's rout of a very good Pirate team.&nbsp;

The Pirates (3-5, 2-3) have a losing record on the year, but all of the losses have been close and against top-tier teams (Iowa Central, Butler, Iowa Western, Garden City and Hutchinson).&nbsp;

Coach Dallas said the focus was to "Get off the field on third down." Indy went 0 for 11 on third down conversions. "They didn't convert all day," Dallas said. The Pirates also went for it on fourth down and did not convert against the Dragon D.

The defense pitched a shutout for the second time this season and has allowed just 10.1 points per game this year.

Hutchinson held the Pirates to 58 total yards.&nbsp;

Once the Dragon offense got on the field, it played at a high level, too.

Quarterback Dylan Laible threw for 150 yards on 9 of 17 completions for two touchdowns.

Malik Benson, the nation's top recruit, caught both of Laible's TD passes. Both scores came in the first quarter after Drummer's 20-yard scoop-and-score.

Laible's 9-yard pass to Benson capped an 8-play, 62-yard drive that took just 3:31 off the clock. The Dragons turned around and scored on a 51-second drive that needed just four plays to cover 58 yards.

That 4-yard pass to Benson came compliments of a Stephen Matina fumble recovery.

In the blink of an eye, an Indy defense that had surrendered just 18.7 points per game going into Saturday's matchup, found itself down 24-0 after one quarter.

Cole Segraves added field goals from 33 and 28 yards away. He should have been kicking for one after a Dylan Kedzior touchdown in the second quarter, but that run was called back for a holding penalty.

It was not the only Kedzior TD called back. Later in the game, his 72-yard dash to the end zone was also nullified by a holding penalty.

Hutchinson (9-0, 6-0) had seven penalties for 80 yards, while Indy racked up 15 penalties for 149. Three Pirates were booted from the contest for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Despite the nullified runs, Kedzior finished with 88 yards rushing and a touchdown from two yards out just before halftime.

Defensive end Nikko Taylor forced Jones to throw away a pass from the end zone while he was still in the pocket. That safety and the Kedzior run put Hutchinson up 36-0 at the break.

Tre Bess got some good touches at RB and made the most of a 42-yard scamper to the end zone in the third quarter. Bess averaged eight yards per carry on eight touches.

Ed Williams III also ran for a touchdown. His seven-yard run was the final score of the game with 7:40 left. His carry capped a 9-play, 44-yard drive that took 4:31 off the clock.

Next week's matchup against Iowa Western was potentially a No. 1 vs. No. 2 contest. However, No. 2 Iowa Western (8-1) lost to No. 8 Coffeyville Saturday night 23-7.

Iowa Western will certainly drop a few spots in Monday's poll.
