MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard could have sulked when he lost the starting quarterback job at Kansas State to Adrian Martinez, the transfer from Nebraska who had never thrown a pass for the Wildcats. Howard could have put his name in the transfer portal and looked for playing time at another school.

But then he wouldn't have found himself in the unlikeliest of spots last Saturday night, getting carried off the field by delirious teammates and fans after a 48-0 rout of then-No. 9 Oklahoma State.

Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, sending the No. 13 Wildcats (6-2, 3-2) soaring up the AP poll and keeping them a game back of TCU in the Big 12 title race.

“Football is a game, it's truly all up here,” Howard said, pointing at his head, “especially at the quarterback position. I've learned a lot of things — what to do, what not to do. And all the other games I played in 2020 and 2021, all those struggles and hardships I had, helped this to happen and helped the success we're having right now."

It's created a predicament at Kansas State, though. Martinez was only ruled out against Oklahoma State about 30 minutes before kickoff, and there's a chance he could be recovered enough from a knee injury to play against Texas on Saturday.

Do the Wildcats go back to their starter or keep riding Howard's hot hand against the Longhorns?

“We'll find out how the week goes," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday. "I don't have the answer.”

The Longhorns (5-3, 3-2), meanwhile, are coming off their bye with some quarterback issues of their own.

Quinn Ewers was just 19 of 49 for 319 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Cowboys two weeks ago, badly overthrowing wide receivers while Texas was blowing the lead in a 41-34 loss. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said he never considered pulling Ewers for Hudson Card, but another poor performance could change his mind.

“Sometimes you have to learn it the hard way, playing quarterback: When we win, you probably get too much credit, and when we lose, you probably get too much blame, and you have to be careful to ride that emotional rollercoaster,” Sarkisian said. “Keep the noise quiet and know that myself, the coaching staff, the team is in the foxhole with him, and we’ll go to battle with him every day, and I think that’s the approach he’s had and will continue to have.”

One factor in whether Howard or Martinez will play going forward is the redshirt status of Howard, who has now played in two of the four games he would be allowed while maintaining his year of eligibility.

“That's definitely a consideration,” Howard said. “It's something we still need to talk about, something we're still deciding on, but you know, obviously the mission is the mission: focus on winning and going as far as we can this year.”

Kansas State debuted at No. 13 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, the first time the Wildcats have been in the poll since Week 11 of the 2019 season. Texas came in at 24th.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson leads the Big 12 with 920 yards rushing, and Kansas State counterpart Deuce Vaughn is second with 902. And wouldn't you know it? The two have become good friends away from the field.

“I actually talked to him this past weekend. He wished me luck against Oklahoma state, we texted after the game,” Vaughn said. “This is already Year 3 that we're playing. It's going to be fun to compete against each other one more time.”

The Wildcats are averaging 228 yards rushing per game, putting them just outside of the top 10 nationally. But they'll be facing one of the best run defenses in the nation in Texas, which is holding opponents to 3.32 yards per carry.

Sarkisian was recruited to Kansas State by Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder out of El Camino College, but he ultimately went to BYU. Coincidentally, the Cougars played the Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl in his final game as their quarterback.

“I went back there as a coach with USC. I’ve been there a couple of times,” Sarkisian said. “Great environment.”

Chris Mack, Pitino’s successor who was fired in January, also was not penalized for additional allegations announced last year by the NCAA. Sports Headlines for Friday

WICHITA – The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team dominated the second half of its Region VI Tournament semifinal match against Butler on Thursday at the Stryker Sports Complex.

But the nationally-ranked No. 4 Grizzlies used a goal in the 29th minute by Brooke Sullivan to end the No. 17 Blue Dragons' season with a 1-0 loss.

It was the Blue Dragons' first regional semifinal appearance since 2021.

The Blue Dragons outshot Butler 16-2 in the second half. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="about:/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/maher_aimee_xuac" target="_blank">Aimee Maher</a>&nbsp;had four shots on goal, including one that skimmed the post and another a minute later hitting the crossbar late in the second half.

With 11 minutes to go in regulation, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="about:/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/lowe_hadlie_mqp8" target="_blank">Hadlie Lowe</a>&nbsp;took a touch past Butler goalkeeper Kyrah Klumpp and fired a shot that was deflected by a Butler defender outside the goal for a corner kick.

Lowe had two shots on goal Thursday, and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="about:/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/dias_de_souza_julia_2tsk" target="_blank">Julia Dias De Souza</a>&nbsp;had a shot on goal on four shots taken. Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Quarles had four saves and one goal allowed.

Butler goalkeeper Kyrah Klumpp finished with nine saves.

Hutchinson finishes the 2022 with a 14-4 overall record. The Blue Dragons were runner-up in the Jayhawk West.

The 14 wins are the most since 2017 for the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons are 23-15 all time in the Region VI tournament, 6-8 in the semifinal round.

"Man," he says, "the student section was incredible tonight." Two full sections of K-State students gave the players a victor's welcome long before tipoff, as a DJ spun jams, and the cheerleaders cheered, and under a purple-toned hue emitting from beneath the Jumbotron at center court, this appeared to be the perfect sweet symphony that players such as Tomlin and Carter yearned for when they signed their pledge to play for Tang and the Wildcats. "It felt good," Carter says. "It started from warmups. I had chills." Sitting by Nowell and Carter inside the postgame interview room, Tomlin nods. "First time," he says. "It was crazy, definitely." And this was at an exhibition game. "Man, for an exhibition game and to have two sections of the stands filled with students, I mean, that was incredible," Tang says. Tang, the former 19-year assistant/associate head coach at Baylor, brought in length, and experience — the average age of each player on roster is 21 — and a former SEC Preseason Player of the Year and junior college All-Americans and high school products who've won multiple state titles. "This team is tough, gritty, selfless, and a bunch of winners," Nowell says. "That's how I'd describe this team. We have a great group of guys who want to win bad and we have a great coaching staff that wants to win just as bad." The Wildcats demonstrated themselves to be an up-tempo, aggressive, high-flying, fast-paced, decisive, aggressive, defensive-minded, above-the-rim squad that played hungry and balanced. And they have room still to grow. "We have a lot of guys who can do different things with the basketball," Nowell says. "Coach always says simple is harder and it's much more difficult to do. If we can be more simple we'll limit our turnovers." K-State led Washburn by as many as 36 points and shot 44% (28-of-63) from the floor, including 21.7% (5-of-23) on 3-pointers, and dished out 17 assists while committing 19 turnovers. K-State had 54 rebounds, 12 steals and seven blocks. K-State held Washburn to just 25.9% (15-of-58) from the floor, including 27.8% (5-of-18) on 3-pointers and forced them into 20 turnovers. "I was pleased with how we turned turnovers into offense," Tang says. "I think we can definitely do better, but I saw guys turn over and we quickly transitioned. Sometimes, early on we were causing turnovers in practice and then holding the ball, and now the quicker we can go from defense to offense and get easy buckets — especially when you get into the Big 12 it's so hard to score in the halfcourt that you've got to be able to transition and get buckets."

And this is already better. It's a new brand of basketball. It's a Tang style of basketball. Fast. Tough. Gritty. Blue collar. It's a throwback, as fans yearn for the past, and what can come. And headlights, they'll come, too, they'll file into the west stadium parking lot from various cities and towns, a pilgrimage to witness the wins and breakthroughs and big wins and to take part in this new tradition, the hand-slap line, which is something so simple, yet so powerful — this bond between players and fans — at the start of a new dawn. "I'm really happy for these guys to experience (our fans)," Nowell says. "I'm glad we pulled off a win. I'm glad that Coach Tang got his first win — not officially — but it's a win. A win is a win. "Coach Tang is an every-day guy. From the day he was hired, he's been like that ever since. Coach Tang is a really good guy and a really good coach. He wants to win so bad and the guys just want to do it for them and especially for ourselves." The game will be televised on Big 12 NOW via ESPN+ with Steven Davis, Nick Bahe and Kennetra Pulliams on the broadcast.

Kansas will face off against Omaha in Allen Fieldhouse for the first official regular-season game of the 2022-23 season. KU has won a mind-boggling 49-straight home openers beginning in 1973-74 under head coach Ted Owens. KU coaches Larry Brown (5-0) and Roy Williams (15-0) never lost a home opener and Bill Self is 19-0.

🏀 Jayhawks to Host Gorillas Thursday

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas native and junior Kennedy Farris tallied her 1000th career dig Wednesday night as the Kansas Jayhawks swept in-state foe Kansas State in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.

The Jayhawks swept the Wildcats 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-15). With the win, Kansas improved to 16-7 on the year and 6-5 in conference play, while Kansas State fell to 12-11 and 3-7 in conference play.

The win was Coach Ray Bechard’s 207th career Big 12 Conference victory, tying him for second all-time in league history. He is tied with Nebraska’s John Cook and trails only Jerritt Elliott from Texas, who has 331 career Big 12 wins.

“Offensively, we were really good,” stated head coach Ray Bechard. “We took a little break at the end of the first set and had a big kill by Rachel Langs to end that set. After that, it gave us a newfound competitive confidence and we took off from there. We played with poise and with confidence, as well as purpose. All of those came together for us.”

The Jayhawks started the first set with a 3-0 run, which included an ace by sophomore Molly Schutlz and a kill by super-senior Rachel Langs. The Wildcats collected their first kill shortly after, however, Kansas responded with another 3-0 run off of three kills by super-senior Anezka Szabo, redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady, and Langs, which resulted in a Kansas State timeout.&nbsp;

The Wildcats collected two more points off Kansas errors, but KU collected four more points of its own to go up 10-4. Elnady collected two more kills for the Jayhawks to make it 15-9.&nbsp;

A surprise kill by sophomore Camryn Turner put the Jayhawks ahead by six, 16-10. The Wildcats closed the gap, but the Jayhawks remained in the lead, 20-15. Szabo tallied two more kills to make it 23-22, and Langs collected her fourth kill of the set to shut down set one, 25-23.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Kansas State error and a kill by graduate transfer Lauren Dooley opened set two, 2-0.&nbsp;

The Wildcats collected their first point of the set off a kill, however, sophomore Caroline Bien and Dooley each responded with a kill of their own to go up 4-1. The Jayhawks then went on a 7-0 run, which included back-to-back kills by Elnady, back-to-back kills by Szabo and a kill by Langs, along with Wildcat errors, making the score 9-3.&nbsp;

The 7-0 run forced two K-State timeouts. Elnady tallied two more kills to advance the Jayhawks to a 14-4 lead. The Wildcats were able to get a few points of their own, but a kill by Langs and K-State errors kept Kansas ahead, 19-8.&nbsp;

Freshman Rhian Swanson subbed in and collected the sixth kill of her career for Kansas, making it 21-12. Kansas State was able to get the ball back, but a kill by Langs and two kills by Bien took the Jayhawks to set point, 24-16. A kill by Dooley closed out set two, 25-16.&nbsp;

Set three started off with a Jayhawk kill by Szabo, which started a 3-0 run for the Jayhawks. K-State tallied its first point of set three but Elnady and Langs shut down their next attempt with a double block, making it 5-2.&nbsp;

Kills by Langs, Bien, Turner, and Dooley put the Jayhawks ahead 11-5. Szabo collected her second round of back-to-back kills in the match, which forced a Wildcat timeout. K-State collected two more points, but Szabo and Turner came back with kills of their own.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks then went on a 5-0 run, their second highest of the night, which included two kills by Bien, two kills by Dooley and Szabo tallying her 12th kill. Sophomore London Davis and Swanson subbed back in and both collected a kill to close out the match, 25-15.&nbsp;

“Anezka Szabo set the tone on Sunday,” said Bechard. “She got right back into it today. Kennedy Farris is playing at a high level, too. Those two are really setting the tone and pace for our team.”&nbsp;

Kansas will hit the road to play No. 11 Baylor on Saturday (November 5) at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The match will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with first serve taking place at 2 p.m. CT.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/fery_perline_iyqs">Perline Fery</a>&nbsp;made her first career start a memorable one by leading the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team to a postseason victory.

Fery had a career-high 12 kills to lead the Blue Dragons to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-12 victory over the Cloud County Thunderbirds in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons (26-11) advance to the Region VI semifinals on Friday in Liberal. Hutchinson will face Jayhawk West co-champion Butler, who fought off two match points against in the fifth set to defeat Colby 17-15 in the final set. Hutchinson and Butler will play one hour after the conclusion of the Seward County/Dodge City match, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Greenhouse in Liberal.

The Blue Dragons advance to the Region VI semifinals for the second time in three seasons under head coach Delice Downing. The Dragons will bid for their first trip to the Region VI finals since 2018. Friday's semifinal will be the 20th time since 2000 the Dragons have advanced as far as the Region VI Tournament semifinals.

Fery hit a season's best .500 in her first career start with 12 kills on 22 attacks and only one error. She got stronger and the match progressed. Fery had two kills on .500 hitting in the opening set. She had four kills on .333 hitting in the second set and exploded in the third set with six kills on nine swings for a .667 attack percentage.

Fery's performance helped the Blue Dragons hit .364 for the match, the third time in as many meetings against Cloud County that the Blue Dragons hit better than .300 as a team. The Blue Dragons out-blocked Cloud County 11-3 and out-dug the Thunderbirds 40-28.

🏐 Blue Dragons advance to Region VI semis with sweep of T-Birds

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason and Director of Athletics Curtis Hammeke announced on Wednesday the addition of Women's Wrestling as a varsity sport in Athletics, set to begin competition in 2024-25. With the addition of the program, Fort Hays State will have 17 intercollegiate athletic programs (nine women's, eight men's).

When the 2024-25 academic year arrives, Fort Hays State will have three sports during the winter season in which both genders compete, including wrestling, basketball, and indoor track and field. Men's and women's soccer were the last sports added to the intercollegiate athletic programs offered at Fort Hays State University, which began competition in 2011 after being announced in 2010. The search for a head coach of the program begins immediately. Once hired, the coach will have at least a year to recruit and build a roster for competition. Fort Hays State will be the first NCAA school in Kansas to offer the sport as a varsity program in Athletics. FHSU will also be the first school in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) to add the sport. There are currently six women's wrestling programs at the collegiate level in Kansas right now, which includes National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) members Baker University, Central Christian College, Friends University, Ottawa University, and University of Saint Mary, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) member Northwest Kansas Technical College. Women's wrestling is currently an NCAA Emerging Sport. There are currently 63 women's wrestling programs at NCAA member institutions either established or in the process of being added aside from the announcement by FHSU today, which includes four NCAA Division I schools, 25 NCAA Division II schools, and 34 NCAA Division III schools. Currently, all three NCAA divisions are part of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC), which completed its third year of holding the NCWWC National Championships in 2022. McKendree University (Ill.), which is an NCAA Division II affiliate, has won the national team title all three years of the championship's existence. Last year, 40 teams competed in four regional qualifiers for the NCWWC Championships. The NAIA will hold its inaugural Women's Wrestling Championship in 2023. For three years (2020-2022), the organization has held a National Wrestling Invitational and it will transition to championship status this year. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) website, there are 42 women's wrestling schools affiliated with the NAIA. Women's wrestling is still an emerging sport at the NJCAA level, like the NCAA. Kansas is one of the fastest growing states in the nation for girls wrestling. Last year, Kansas had over 1,400 participants in girls wrestling at the high school level. This year will mark the fourth year the state activities association will hold a state championship for girls wrestling. All classifications were included in the first state championship three years ago, but there have been two championship classifications for the past two years, 5-6A classes combined and 1-4A classes combined.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The University of Kansas informed the NCAA’s IRP (Independent Resolution Panel) last week that it was self-imposing several sanctions in response to its ongoing basketball case, which originated in 2017. The sanctions include:

“Throughout this process, we have had ongoing conversations with all the involved parties,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “We believe the actions we are announcing today move us closer to resolving this matter. We look forward to commenting further when this process is fully resolved. Until then, I want to reiterate our unwavering support of Coach Self and our Men’s Basketball program.”

“We are hopeful these difficult self-imposed sanctions will assist in bringing the case to a conclusion,” KU Director of Athletics Travis Goff said. “Until then, we will continue to focus on supporting our outstanding Men’s Basketball student-athletes and coaches. Assistant Coach Norm Roberts will serve as interim head coach during the first four games. Per confidentiality guidelines related to infraction cases, we are unable to comment in depth until there is full resolution of this matter.”

“Coach Townsend and I accept and support KU’s decision to self-impose these sanctions,” Self said. “We are in good hands with Coach Roberts, and I am confident that he will do a great job on the bench leading our team. I am proud of the way our guys have handled this situation and I look forward to returning to the bench for our game against NC State.”&nbsp;

Impressive start propels K-State past Washburn in exhibition 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Threes, threes everywhere.

No. 13 Hutchinson (1-0) knocked down 18 triples en route to scoring 124 points against the Fort Scott Greyhounds Tuesday night in the Sports Arena.

Returner Jayden Garrison of Little River hit 7 of 11 three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 29. Garrison made 9 of 13 overall from the field.

Aaron Franklin played just four games last year before getting injured. He scored 28 on the night and pulled in eight rebounds.

Kernan Bundy was the only other Dragon in double-digit scoring, but 13 of the 14 Dragons that played scored at least two points.

Jackson Leyba and Ty Frierson each notched nine points.

Baker Beal led the way for Fort Scott with his 33 points, while his teammate, Clance Crosby, added a double-double (24 points and 11 rebounds).

Hutchinson hit 36.7% from distance and shot 46.8% from the floor overall.

HUTCHINSON, Kan — The No. 9 Blue Dragons (1-0) opened the season Tuesday night in the Sports Arena against the Bethany College JV.

Hutchinson led by just nine after one quarter of action.

A 13-0 run to start the second quarter kicked things into gear as Hutchinson rolled to an 88-44 victory.

Mya Williams led the Blue Dragons with 21 points on 8 of 17 shooting. She knocked down three triples.

Hutchinson got another 19 from newcomer Monae Duffy. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Returner Kali Howard finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 boards.

Hutchinson shot 48% from the floor and held Bethany to 25.8%. Bethany made just 5 of 26 three-point attempts (19.2%).

The Dragons lost the ball just 10 times while forcing the Swedes into 21 turnovers.

The Dragons assisted on 22 of 36 made baskets. Six Dragons notched three assists each (Armstead, Duffy, Williams, Johnson, Horyna and Te Nana-Williams).

Kassi Ballard paced Bethany with 13 points.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Coming off a performance that saw him register 176 total yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 48-0 win over No. 9 Oklahoma State, Kansas State running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Vaughn finished the game with 158 rushing yards – which included a 62-yard touchdown – while he hauled in four passes for 18 yards, including a one-yard touchdown catch with seven seconds left before halftime.

It was Vaughn’s fifth 100-yard rushing game this season to tie for ninth in school history, while it was the 17th&nbsp;in his 31-game career. During the contest against the Cowboys, Vaughn moved into third place in school history in career rushing yards (2,948) and career all-purpose yards (4,125), into a tie for fifth place in career rushing touchdowns (30), from outside the top-10 to sixth place in career rushing attempts (512) and into 10th&nbsp;place in career points scored (222).

Vaughn, who is the fourth fastest player nationally since 1996 with 2,500 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career, is just 52 rushing yards away from hitting the 3,000-yard rushing mark. If he were to accomplish it this week against Texas – his 32nd-career game – he would tie Saquan Barkley (Penn State) and Jeremy McNichols (Boise State) for the fastest since 1996 to hit 3,000 yards on the ground and 1,000 yards through the air.

When Tommy DeSalme was named head coach of the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team before the 2021-22 season, he promised a fast-paced style of play.

DeSalme delivered on that promise and Blue Dragon fans noticed.

So what does the second-year head coach of the Blue Dragons have in mind for 2022-23?

"I'm really excited about our 2022-23 Blue Dragons," said DeSalme, whose team opens the season at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Fort Scott at the Sports Arena. "We hope to be the fastest-playing team in the country."

DeSalme returns four players from a 26-9 team that was a Jayhawk Conference and Region VI runner-up and made it to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament. That said, the experience level of the Blue Dragons will be less than last season after the loss of several key sophomores and super-sophomores from last season.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;saw the most action last season for the Dragons last season.

Garrison averaged 3.9 points and shot 34.4 percent from 3-point range last season. He will be joined by guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>, who played only five games before being lost for the season with an injury. Franklin averaged 12.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Also back are guards&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/mcclure_trey_gb8i">Trey McClure</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frederick_ra-sean_ozi1">Ra'Sean Frederick</a>, who was lost to a season-ending injury during the preseason last year. McClure played in nine games and 31 minutes last season.

"I feel like we have added a great recruiting class," DeSalme said. We are excited to get the season going with three great games this week at the Arena. I believe the Blue Dragon Fans will have a great time watching and getting to know our newcomers."

Last season, the Blue Dragons led the Jayhawk Conference in scoring 94.2 points per game. The Dragons shot 41.5 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from 3-point range with a team single-season record 321 3-pointers.

The Blue Dragons opened last season with Fort Scott and the Blue Dragons won 122-95.

The Dragons are the preseason pick to win the Jayhawk Conference this this season, according to the KJCCC preseason coaches' poll. The Blue Dragons also open the season at No. 13 in the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball national preseason rankings.

Hutchinson has several strong tests on opening week. After Fort Scott on Tuesday, the Blue Dragons play host to No. 7 Triton and NEO on Friday and Saturday for the BSN Tipoff Classic at the Sports Arena. Game times each night are 7:30 p.m.

Howard averaged 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Simms averaged 1.8 points and 2.3 rebounds.The Blue Dragons add sophomore transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/browning_morgan_wxv3">Morgan Browning</a>&nbsp;to the mix this season. Browning is a transfer for Morehead State. She played in 28 games and started 23 last season and averaged 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. "Bree and Camree should also play key roles for us this season."After opening night on Tuesday, the Blue Dragons will play Mineral Area and NEO in the BSN Tipoff Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Sports Arena.
