STERLING, Kan. – Powered by grand slams from Blake Bradford and Ryan Henderson, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team broke the 20-run mark in a game for the first time since 2021 on Monday.
The Blue Dragons won their season-high sixth-consecutive game with a 24-2 rule-rule rout of the Sterling College JV, completing a two-game series sweep.
Hutchinson is now 26-22 overall heading into a pivotal Jayhawk West series with first-place Barton beginning on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.
The Blue Dragon 24-run output ties for the fourth-most runs in program single-game history, tying a 2014 game against Rose State, a 2016 game against Garden City and a 2021 game against Redlands. The Blue Dragons hammered out 16 hits, including six for extra bases. The Dragons took advantage of nine walks, three hit batsmen and two Warrior errors.
All nine blue Dragon starters had at least one hit and 8 of 9 Hutchinson starters drove on runs.
Henderson was 3 for 5 with a double, grand slam and five RBIs. Henderson had an RBI double in the third and launched his grand slam in a six-run seventh inning.
Bradford went 2 for 3 with five RBIs and a Blue Dragon single-game record-tying four runs. Bradford’s grand slam came in a seven-run third inning. Bradford has two career grand slams, both coming against the Sterling JV.
Will Edmunson was 3 for 5 with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs.
Cody Gunderson and A.J. Mutsow had two hits each. Mustow and Max Childress had two RBIs each.
The Blue Dragons used seven pitchers in the game. Gus McKay (3-1) started and allowed one hit with a strikeout. Bradley Neill and Kaden Wickersham had three strikeouts in their respective innings of work.
Blue Dragon pitching scattered seven hits and combined for 15 strikeouts.
