DETROIT (AP) — Harold Castro singled in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning after tying it with a two-run single in the eighth in the Detroit Tigers' 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Tucker Barnhart bunted pinch-runner Ryan Kreidler to third and Anthony Misiewicz (3-2) intentionally walked pinch-hitter Eric Haase.

Riley Greene struck out, and the Royals decided to walk Javy Báez to pitch to Castro with the bases loaded. He hit a soft grounder up the middle to win it.

“We were getting in the shower as soon as they walked Javy,” Spencer Torkelson said. “It was like, ‘All right, we’re getting to Hittin' Harold.' We have all the confidence in the world."

Baez has struck out 143 times this year, including in a key situation in the eighth, but Royals manager Mike Matheny said he never considered pitching to him with the left-handed Misiewicz on the mound.

“We were going to make their lefties beat us,” he said. “Baez is a right-handed hitter who hits lefties really well. Anthony made a good pitch — (catcher Salvador Perez) was going down to block hit, but (Castro) got a piece of it.”

Castro also helped with his glove. In the top of the 10th, Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a bouncer down the third-base line. Castro made a diving stop and, while he didn't have a play on Witt, was able to hold automatic runner MJ Melendez at second.

Alex Lange (6-4) retired Salvador Perez before getting Vinnie Pasquatino to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

The Tigers trailed 3-0 after seven innings against Zack Greinke, then tied it against Dylan Coleman in the eighth.

Torkelson started the inning with a walk, then beat third baseman Nate Eaton's throw to second on a groundball. After Tucker Barnhart lined out, Akil Baddoo's bunt single loaded the bases. Riley Greene grounded softly to Eaton, but his throw home pulled Salvador Perez off the bag.

Báez struck out, but Castro lined a 2-2 pitch to left for a tying single. Carlos Hernández came in to retire Miguel Cabrera to keep it tied.

“If you want a single, Harold is the guy you want up there,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He does an incredible job of getting a piece of the ball and getting it onto the outfield grass. (Torkelson) made a couple nice baserunning plays in that inning and Akil got down that bunt on his own."

“Zack pitched a vintage Zack game today,” Matheny said. “I don't even look at the velocity when he's pitching — it is all about pitch shape for him. I just watch how the hitters are reacting to him.”

Tigers starter Joey Wentz allowed three runs in five innings.

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second on Dozier's home run — his 10th in 32 career games at Comerica Park and extended the margin to 3-0 on Nate Eaton's RBI triple in the fourth.

“I have no idea why I hit so well here,” said Dozier, who has only homered once against the Tigers at home. “I like this park - it's a fun place to play - so maybe I see the ball better here. I don't really know.”

Kansas City could have given Greinke a bigger lead. After stranding runners in scoring position in the first two innings, Edward Oliveres hit a two-out double that would have easily scored Vinnie Pasquatino from first, but the ball hopped over the fence for a ground-rule double and Dozier struck out.

In the fourth, Eaton was on third with one out after his triple, but second baseman Jonathan Schoop made a spectacular play to snag MJ Melendez's line drive, spin and throw to third for an inning-ending double play.

“We had a couple chances to score more runs, but we still got the game to the situation we wanted,” Matheny said. “We had a runner on second and our 2-3-4 hitters coming up in the 10th. We just didn't get it done.”

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita State University Board of Trustees approved funding on Thursday for phases 1A and 1B for the capital improvement plan to replace Cessna Stadium, for a total project cost of approximately $11.8 million.&nbsp;

When completed, the new university stadium will accommodate more than 10,000 spectators and include an 8-lane track and space for a soccer field.

Phasing has been developed around maintaining the spectator seating and other infrastructure required for the annual Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship and the Wichita State track and field teams.

The total project cost of Phase 2A/2B is anticipated to be approximately $39.5 million.&nbsp;Funding for Phase 2A/2B will be a combination of university funds, private gifts and other local funding sources.&nbsp;

The intent for the University Stadium project is to select a design team to create an architectural program and then create construction documents for the entire project to be bid by phase as separate construction projects as funding is available.&nbsp;</li><li>Phase 1A is anticipated to start in August 2023 and includes the improvements on the east side of the existing track (underground utility work, a bermed grass seating area seating for 2,390, new free-standing field lights, ticket pavilion, restroom/storage buildings, and plaza).&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Phase 1B, anticipated to start in June 2024, widens the existing grass field to accommodate a regulation-sized soccer field and reconfigures the 8-lane track around the widened field.&nbsp;This phase also includes new aluminum bleacher seating at the north and south side of the track to seat a total of 3,460 spectators.</li><li>Phase 2A, the demolition of the existing west Cessna Stadium structure, can begin as early as June 2025. A new west stadium structure with seating for 4,190 will be built as Phase 2B. The new west stadium would include a single level of press boxes and suites, offices/locker rooms/team room areas for a future soccer team, as well as restrooms, concessions and storage rooms.</li><li>Phase 2B also incorporates a pedestrian plaza between Charles Koch Arena and the new stadium to allow for food trucks, merchandise tents and public space adjacent to the stadium.</li>

The Independent Accountability Review Panel issued only its second decision Tuesday, with cases involving Louisiana State, Arizona, Kansas and Louisville still on the group’s docket. The IARP ruled that Memphis failed to monitor Hardaway as an athletics booster, provided impermissible benefits and other benefits to recruits. The panel also ruled that Memphis failed to cooperate with the investigation by delaying handing over requested documents.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett suffered a sprained shoulder, strained biceps and minor cuts when he flipped his Porsche in a frightening one-car accident on Monday. Garrett spent several hours being treated at a hospital after rolling his car on a rural road following practice. Despite the injuries, the Browns have not yet ruled out the star from Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. The Browns said doctors concluded Garrett did not have any fractures and he has cleared concussion protocol. The team returns to practice Wednesday.

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — The body of a famed U.S. extreme skier who went missing this week after falling from the world’s eighth-highest mountain has been recovered and transported to Nepal’s capital. Hilaree Nelson was skiing down from the summit of Mount Manaslu with her partner on Monday when she fell off the mountain. Her body was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu where doctors planned to perform an autopsy. Rescuers searching by helicopter located Nelson’s body on Wednesday after failing to find her on Tuesday and Monday, when bad weather hampered their search.

Sports Headlines for Wednesday

For the second-straight week, Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer players earn Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week honors.

This week, two Blue Dragons earn conference honors.

Sophomore forward Hadlie Lowe was tapped the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week, while sophomore Madison Quarles was named the conference Goalkeeper of the Week.

Lowe was instrumental in the Blue Dragons’ last two wins, which were over two NJCAA Top 20 opponents. Lowe had a three-point game, which included the eventual game-winner against then-No. 17 Cowley on the road in last Wednesday’s 2-1 win. She then led a game-defining counter attack against former No. 15 Coffeyville last Saturday and assisted on freshman Adriana Delgado’s second career overtime and game-winning goal.

Lowe’s goal against Cowley was her 11th career game-winning goal and her third this season.

Quarles got the start against the Red Ravens and improved to 4-0 this season. Quarles had a career-high six saves in the overtime upset win that landed the Blue Dragons back in the NJCAA rankings.

Quarles made an early save in the overtime period before the Lowe-to-Delgado counter attack. This season, the Olathe West product has a 0.72 goals-against average.

Lowe and Quarles are the third and fourth Blue Dragons to earn conference honors this season. Last week, midfielder Aimee Maher was the Player of the Week. Three weeks ago, Olivia Felix-Cardona was the league’s Goalkeeper of the Week.

NEWTON – All-Americans Dominic Clemons and Blake Saffell shot a combined 12-under-par to stake the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to a three-stroke lead entering Wednesday’s final round of the NJCAA National Preview at Sand Creek Station.

The Blue Dragons shot a 9-under 567 in the first two rounds on Tuesday. The Blue Dragons led by six strokes after an opening-round 282. The lead was trimmed to three strokes after 36 holes after an afternoon-round 285.

The Blue Dragons lead No. 2 New Mexico Junior College by three strokes after the Thunderbirds posted a 570 (288-282) on Tuesday. Odessa College shot a tournament-low 274 in the second round and trails by seven strokes at 574.

The NJCAA National Preview, played at the site of the 2023 NJCAA Men’s Division I National Championships in May 2023, has seven of the Top 10 and 12 of the Top 20 teams in the field of 15 teams.

Clemons is the top individual golfer through 36 holes and Saffell is tied for second.

Clemons was even through the first 10 holes of Round 1. He then birdied No. 11 and had an eagle on the par-5, 525-yard 16th hole to finish with a 3-under 69. Clemons played the front nine of the second round in 5-under par and he remained 5-under at the end of the round for a 67.

Clemons takes a four-stroke lead into Wednesday’s final round at 8-under 136.

Saffell is part of a three-way tie for second at 4-under 140. Saffell birdied Nos. 16 and 18 to finish the opening round at 4-under 68 to lead the tournament. After a bogey on No. 17 in the second round, Saffell rebounded to birdie No. 18 and finish with a 72.

Saffell is tied with Odessa’s Alexander Topgaard and New Mexico’s Timothy Chan at 140.

Nineteen golfers shot even or under par on Tuesday.

One of those players is Blue Dragon freshman Alex Lindstrom, who rebounded from an opening-round 74 with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon round. Even through 15 holes in the second round, Lindstrom finished strong with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to finish at 2-under 70 for the round.

Freshmen Louis Galvin is tied for 39th at 149 (73-76) and Louis Ross is tied for 53rd at 152 (72-80).

The Blue Dragons have three individual players.

Freshman Joey Langstraat is tied for 23rd at 146. He opened with a 1-under 71 and shot a 75 in the second round.

Sophomore Addison Alonzo is tied for 67th after a 154 (78-76).

Freshman Brooks Sauder is tied for 76th at 158 (78-80).

The final round is a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Maliyah Johnson, 5'11" outside hitter for the Salthawks had 5 kills vs Seaman to pass the prestigious mark.

Johnson had 28+ kills total for the weekend and&nbsp;has 196 kills this season for the Salthawks who are now 21-5 after sweeping Derby and Newton on Tuesday night. Hutch High is also undefeated in AVCTL play at 5-0. In addition, Johnson had 17 kills in one match vs Valley Center earlier in the season.

The team says Garrett did not suffer life-threatening injuries but provided no further details on his condition. His agent said Garrett has remained alert and responsive while getting medical attention. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it responded to a rollover crash around 3 p.m. Troopers found a gray Porsche 911 Turbo S on the right side of the road with rollover damage. The highway patrol said Garrett and a unidentified female passenger were both transported to a hospital. The crash is still under investigation. Garrett was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

The brothers combined for 96 career starts, 915 tackles, 96 tackles for loss and 16 fumble recoveries at Oklahoma. All three started on the defensive line in 1973. Lucious and Dewey were present, but Lee Roy passed away in 2011. Family members helped pull the cover off the statue.

GREAT BEND – Sophomore Blondie Penaflor put up a huge block and helped the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team rebound from a tough weekend snap an eight-match losing streak to the Barton Cougars.

Penaflor had a career-high 10 blocks, including three during a 10-3 run in the fourth set that guided the Blue Dragons a 3-1 Jayhawk Conference road victory over the Cougars, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23).

The Blue Dragons improve to 19-8 overall and 6-1 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson plays host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. Wednesday for Hutchinson’s annual Dig Pink Night at the Sports Arena. Then No. 12 Seward County comes to the Sports Arena at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Barton fell to 13-4 (2-4).

Penaflor led a Blue Dragon block that out-blocked the Cougars 12-6. Freshman Ashlyn Long came off the bench to add four total blocks.

Blue Dragons also outhit the Cougars 53-50 with a .188 attack percentage. Barton was held to .157 hitting. The Blue Dragons out-dug the Cougars 79-70.

Freshman Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 17 kills on .286 hitting. Sophomore Baylee Miller had 15 kills on .186 hitting. Freshman Anna Dean added eight kills.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College Community College men’s golf team will get a lot of first looks on Tuesday and Wednesday at the NJCAA National Preview in Newton.

Of course, the Blue Dragons will get to play the 2023 home of the NJCAA Men’s Division I Golf Championships, Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Secondly, the Blue Dragons will play against six other members of the current NJCAA Division I Top 10 and 12 total teams ranked in the national rankings.

The 54-hole tournament begins on Tuesday with 36 holes – the opening round starts at 8:30 a.m. and the second round is at 1:30 p.m. The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. All three rounds will be shotgun starts.

The two-time defending national champion Blue Dragons will be paired with No. 2 New Mexico Junior College and No. 10 McLennan in the first round rounds on Tuesday.

🏌️‍♂️ HutchCC Golf: Dragons open play at NJCAA National Preview Tuesday

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team is back in the national rankings.

The Blue Dragons leaped back into the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer national poll at No. 17 on Monday after beating two ranked teams last week. The Dragons topped then-No. 17Cowley 2-1 and then-No. 15 Coffeyville 2-1 in overtime.

The Blue Dragons had lost to Johnson County on the road 3-1 after being up 1-0 at the half prior to bouncing back with two big wins.

Freshman Adriana Delgado netted her second overtime game-winner of the season on an assist from sophomore Hadlie Lowe after the Blue Dragons mounted a quick counter attack after a Coffeyville corner kick for the overtime game-winner.

Lowe, who had the go-ahead goal against Cowley in the second half, boasted five points last week with two goals and an assist. She also had the early goal in the fifth minute against Coffeyville.

Monday’s ranking is the second time this season the Blue Dragons have been ranked. The Dragons were No. 20 two weeks ago, the program's first national ranking since Oct. 17, 2017. The Dragons lost 3-1 to Johnson County and immediately fell out of the rankings.

This weekend will be the third of four straight matches against ranked opponents, Saturday’s match is at sixth-ranked and Jayhawk East leader Butler, which is coming off a 5-1 victory over Garden City. Butler is 9-2-1 this season, 5-0-1 in conference play.

Coffeyville remained in the rankings at No. 20. Eastern Florida State received all eight first-place votes. Six teams in the top 20 remain undefeated.

HutchCC Sports InformationThe Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team is back in the national rankings.The Blue Dragons leaped back into the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer national poll at No. 17 on Monday after beating two ranked teams last week. The Dragons topped then-No. 17Cowley 2-1 and then-No. 15 Coffeyville 2-1 in overtime.The Blue Dragons had lost to Johnson County on the road 3-1 after being up 1-0 at the half prior to bouncing back with two big wins.Freshman Adriana Delgado netted her second overtime game-winner of the season on an assist from sophomore Hadlie Lowe after the Blue Dragons mounted a quick counter attack after a Coffeyville corner kick for the overtime game-winner.Lowe, who had the go-ahead goal against Cowley in the second half, boasted five points last week with two goals and an assist. She also had the early goal in the fifth minute against Coffeyville.Monday’s ranking is the second time this season the Blue Dragons have been ranked. The Dragons were No. 20 two weeks ago, the program's first national ranking since Oct. 17, 2017. The Dragons lost 3-1 to Johnson County and immediately fell out of the rankings.This weekend will be the third of four straight matches against ranked opponents, Saturday’s match is at sixth-ranked and Jayhawk East leader Butler, which is coming off a 5-1 victory over Garden City. Butler is 9-2-1 this season, 5-0-1 in conference play.Coffeyville remained in the rankings at No. 20. Eastern Florida State received all eight first-place votes. ATLANTA&nbsp;-&nbsp;Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl&nbsp; on Monday announced that Kansas State head football coach Chris Klieman has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week presented by PNC.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

Kansas State opened Big 12 conference play with a road victory, defeating the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners 41-34 in Norman this past weekend. The Wildcats never trailed in the contest and their 41 points were the most points the program has ever scored in Norman, dating back to 1908.

Under Coach Klieman, Kansas State has won three of the last four matchups against Oklahoma, with the Sooners ranked inside the top six in each game. The win has moved the Wildcats up to No. 25 in the latest AP poll.

“Coach Klieman and the Wildcats opened up Big 12 play with a huge road win against a highly-ranked conference opponent,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Coach Dodd would have applauded how Coach Klieman and the Wildcats bounced back after a tough game the week before and then went into a hostile territory to pull off an upset victory.”

Klieman was named head coach at Kansas State in 2019 and has complied a 23-17 record during his tenure. Before his time in Manhattan, he coached the North Dakota State Bison to an impressive 69-6 record over five seasons, including four NCAA Division I FCS National Championships. In his first three seasons at Kansas State, he has compiled the most wins in school history by a head coach during that span and became the only coach in school history to send two teams to a bowl game in his first three years.

Off the field, the football team has also worked alongside Be The Match, an organization operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, on Kansas State’s campus. The program, “Get in the Game. Save a Life,” has allowed thousands of collegiate athletes to donate blood stem cells, to help save lives around the world.

Klieman’s student-athletes have been just as impressive in the classroom earning a 986 Academic Progress Rate the last academic year, which is the ninth highest in the country. The team also recorded a Graduation Success Rate of 93 in 2021, the fourth-highest rate among all FBS schools last year.&nbsp;

Matt Ammendola missed an extra point and a short field goal. Mahomes only got Kansas City into the end zone twice. The Broncos went three-and-out nine times and Denver's only sustained drive was an 80-yarder over 12 plays that Gordon capped with his 1-yard TD. Garoppolo threw a touchdown pass and was intercepted in his first start in place of injured starter Trey Lance, who broke an ankle in Week 2.

Seattle remained four games ahead of Baltimore for that last AL playoff slot. Castillo, an All-Star traded from Cincinnati to the Mariners in midseason, got a $108 million, five-year contract.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones blamed himself for the Chiefs' first loss of the season.

Coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes accepted responsibility, too.

The truth was there were plenty of head-scratching moments Sunday as the Indianapolis Colts rallied for the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds left to steal a 20-17 victory in their home opener.

“It (stinks), man,” Jones said when asked about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he drew on Indy's final drive. “It was third down, we got off the field, defense fought hard and I kind of put us in a situation to get back on the field. And then we got scored on, and that sums up the game. So, I’ll take that one. It was my fault. It was definitely my fault.”

Jones thought he was simply having a conversation with Colts quarterback Matt Ryan and didn't know what drew the flag. Ryan said he wasn't sure, either.

According to a postgame pool report, referee Shawn Smith explained the call was for abusive language toward an opponent and additional details would be included in the crew's game report. Either way,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colts.com/video/highlight-michael-pittman-jr-rips-away-potential-int-translates-it-into-25-yard-">the result was the same — an extended drive that led to the loss</a>.

From Skyy Moore's muffed punt at his own 4-yard line to another misplayed punt that resulted in Kansas City being pinned inside the 1-yard line, Sunday's game was full of missed opportunities.

Yes, the Chiefs converted a 2-point pass just before halftime to erase Matt Ammendola's missed extra point. But they couldn't overcome Ammendola missing a 34-yard field goal to the left, setting up the Colts' final drive.

Or the fake field goal Reid called for on Kansas City's previous possession. Instead of potentially extending the lead to 20-13 with a 42-yarder, Tommy Townsend's pass fell incomplete.

“That’s one I probably shouldn’t have called,” Reid said. "In this league, the parity is crazy so any mistake is magnified. But we thought we could get it.”

Mahomes wasn't happy, either, when the Chiefs (2-1) decided to run out the clock before halftime instead of trying to score again.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1574106345703292928">It resulted in a brief shouting match</a>&nbsp;between the quarterback and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy before Reid broke it up.

But Mahomes was more upset with the Chiefs' inability to finish drives. In four red-zone trips, only two resulted in touchdowns and both came after turnovers deep in Colts territory.

Otherwise, it was a field goal kind of day.

“As an offense, we’ve got to make it where those little mistakes don’t cause a loss,” Mahomes said after going 20 of 35 for 262 yards, one TD and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colts.com/video/can-t-miss-play-rodney-mcleod-ices-colts-win-over-chiefs-with-int-on-mahomes">his first interception of the season</a>. "We have multiple chances to get in the end zone. If we get in one time in the second half and don’t stall out at the goal line, we win the game.”

Perhaps even more frustrating was that it all happened against a foe still reeling from last week's embarrassing shutout at Jacksonville and still seeking its first win. This time, though, the Colts (1-1-1) took full advantage of Kansas City's miscues.

They got their first lead of the season three plays after the muffed punt and took the lead for good on Ryan's 12-yard TD pass to rookie Jelanie Woods nine plays after the call on Jones.

“We still have a lot of improving to do and what I’ve found throughout my career is usually you find ways to get better throughout the season,” Ryan said. “But you’ve got to find ways to win till you get there.”

Kansas City, meanwhile, will spend this week looking for solutions after losing for just the third time in Mahomes' 16 career September starts.
