HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Salhawk boys and girls both won on Senior night by sweeping Newton on Friday night at the Salthawk Activity Center (SAC). The Hutchinson girls won 35-20 while the boys took the boys game 58-39 to finish out the regular season.

Aliyah Green scored 11 of her game high 15 points in the first half turning a slow start into a 18-6 lead at the half. Lilly Rodriquez and Grace Posch filled in at point guard for the injured Josie McLean who suffered a season ending knee injury against Derby on Tuesday. McLean started what would become her last senior season basketball game and received a standing ovation from the Hutchinson home crowd as she was replaced in the line up by Aliyah Green.

The Salthawk girls (15-5) where led in scoring by Aliyah Green with 15 points, followed by Grace Posch and Libby Jackson who both had five points. Lilly Rodriquez added four points as Mya Thompson, Kaia Smith and Aiyanna Green scored two points each to round out the Salthawk scoring.

Newton (7-13) was led in scoring by Olivia Antonowich with 10 points, Stephanie Nelson six points, Piper Seidl and Tyrianna Bridges scored two points apiece in the loss.

Both teams await their sub-state seedings that come out on Saturday morning from the KSHSAA office.

The Salthawk boys and Newton went back and forth in the early minutes before Hutchinson went on a eight to two run to close out the first quarter leading 16-10. The Salthawks pushed the lead to 32-18 at the half.

Nic Lange led the Salthawks in scoring with 14 points followed by his senior teammate Garrett Robinson's 11 points. Wade Meyer added eight points, Dauntay King and Terrell King scored seven points apiece. Bradyn Rodriquez added five points, Julian Smith and Jay Lewis closed out the Salthawk scoring with three points each.

Newton was led in scoring by Camden Carr with 15 points, Cole Dillon added seven points,&nbsp; Justin Zerger six points, Jose Vasquez chipped in five, Ashton Castro four and Ezra Entz scored two.

Hutchinson (19-1) will be the second seed in class 5A West and will host a sub-state. The seedings will come out from the KSHSAA office Saturday morning.&nbsp; Newton (2-18) finishes their season.

The longtime Chiefs offensive coordinator interviewed for 15 different head jobs in recent years. But coaching two-time league MVP Patrick Mahomes and working under offensive coach Andy Reid clouded what Bieniemy might be responsible for. He will now have a chance to show what he can do calling plays in Washington.

The hiring comes after a deliberate search that included fellow former head coaches Rex Ryan and Matt Patricia. Joseph coached the Broncos from 2017-18, compiling an 11-21 record. He spent the past four seasons as the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator.

The bases are expanding from 15-inch squares to 18 inches, which cuts down the distance between them by 4 1/2 inches. The distance between third and home and home and first was trimmed by 3 inches. With the new bases, major league teams could try a more aggressive approach on the basepaths. The bases also could help prevent injuries.

Sports Headlines for Friday

WICHITA, Kan.—James Rojas'&nbsp;torrid start and&nbsp;Jaron Pierre Jr.'s&nbsp;second-half binge weren't to get Wichita State over the hump in an 83-78 loss to Memphis Thursday evening at Charles Koch Arena. Neither side led by more than seven points in a game that featured 16 lead changes. The Shockers (14-13, 7-8) fell to 2-6 in American Athletic Conference home games. Star point guard Kendric Davis returned from a one-game injury absence with 19 points to help Memphis (21-7, 11-4) post its sixth consecutive series win. DeAndre Williams added 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The Tigers shot 54.7% from the field – a season-best for a WSU foe. They were 9-of-19 from three and outscored the Shockers 16-8 at the foul line. WSU (14-13, 7-8) made just 6-of-27 from deep but piled up 48 points in the paint thanks to a 20-of-34 performance from inside the arc. The Shockers also enjoyed a 14-7 edge in turnovers. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaykwon-walton/7208">Jaykwon Walton</a>&nbsp;made 7-of-11 shots on his way to 14 points. The Blue Dragons saw a 15-point lead disappear as Seward kept clawing back into the game. The Saints would grab their first lead at the 7:58 mark in the second half. Seward (13-16, 9-14) grew its lead to four just 30 seconds later.

The Blue Dragons looked lost in the second half with everything going the way of Seward. Hutchinson needed an answer. That's when Aaron Franklin and Kieran Carr both stepped up for the Blue Dragons. Franklin and Carr scored 17-straight Hutchinson points in the second half, including two big treys by Franklin from the top of the key.&nbsp;

Franklin led the offensive attack for HutchCC with 25 points, while Bundy added 19. Mario Whitley scored a team-high 22 points for Seward.

LIBERAL, Kan. — The Blue Dragons overcame a 19-turnover game with stellar defense to defeat the Seward County Saints 69-54 on Wednesday in the Greenhouse.

Monae Duffy posted her ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Journey Armstead nearly joined her, going for 18 points and nine boards.

Hutchinson (22-7, 15-7) built a 24-point lead with 8:17 to play in the fourth quarter, but Seward had an answer. The Saints used a late 9-0 run to pull within 65-54, but it came too late in the game.

Seward (14-15, 12-11) held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter before the Blue Dragons scored the first dozen points in the second to grab its first lead. Hutchinson would take a 33-21 lead into halftime.

The Blue Dragons shot 41 percent for the game, knocking down 24-of-59 field goal attempts. The Saints connected on just 33 percent (18-of-54).&nbsp;

Hutchinson dominated the glass, outrebounding Seward by 21. The Saints were led by Hamila Sallat’s 16 points.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Both boys and girls Buhler bowling teams along with the Hutchinson boys advance to the State Championship after regional play at The Alley Wednesday.

Malachi Willis paced the Crusader boys with a 660 series. Hutchinson's top bowler was Brody Ummel with a 698. He led all bowlers on Wednesday.

The Buhler girls were led by Teigan Neilsen's 555 series. Chloe Glaser and Maddie Rayl both qualified from Hutchinson for state as girl individuals. Glaser rolled a 471 and Rayl a 462 to qualify.

State bowling is at Northrock Lanes in Wichita March 2.

Because of predicted wet weather this weekend in Oklahoma, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team and Rose State College have altered their scheduled weekend three-game series in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

The Blue Dragons and Raiders, will now play a doubleheader on Thursday, February 23 and a single game on Friday, February 24.

Game times on Thursday are 1 and 3:30 p.m. and Friday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

K-State (16-12, 5-10 Big 12) held Kansas (16-10, 6-9) to its lowest offensive output of the season with 45 points and a field goal percentage of 31.4 percent. The Wildcats were led on Wednesday night by sophomore guard Serena Sundell with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 8-of-9 from the foul line. Over the last eight games, Sundell has scored 20 or more points four times.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Anna Gret Asi capped Oklahoma State’s best 3-point shooting night of the season with a clutch, tightly contested shot in the final minute and the Cowgirls topped No. 20 Iowa State 73-68 in a showdown for third place in the Big 12 Conference. Asi made the score 71-66 as the shot clock expired with 49 seconds to play, making Oklahoma State 8 of 12 behind the line. PHOENIX (AP) — One of MLB’s most visible rule changes for 2023 is a sizable curtailing of infield shifts. The practice had grown exponentially over the past several years and has been partially blamed for a steady league-wide decline in batting average. The new rule states that all four infielders must have both feet within the outer boundary of the infield — and two infielders must be on each side of second base — when the pitch is delivered. MLB has also mandated that the infield dirt cutout have uniform dimensions in all 30 ballparks. The outfield edge of the dirt must be 95 feet from the front of the pitching rubber.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Carlos Beltrán refused to discuss his role in the Houston Astros cheating scandal, preferring to concentrate on his new role with the New York Mets. Beltrán was hired by the Mets in November 2019 to replace Mickey Callaway as manager. But the team announced Beltrán’s departure the following January without him managing a game. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Someone will be getting a big check this week at the Honda Classic. And then someone will be writing a big check to take over the Honda Classic. It’s expected that there will be a tournament at PGA National in 2024 and beyond, but this weekend will mark the last time someone wins the Honda. The automaker’s 42-year sponsorship ends with this PGA Tour event. Potential successors will be in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, to decide if they want to buy the naming rights. MANHATTAN, Kansas (AP) – K-State used a stellar defensive effort to split the season series with Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown with a 63-45 win on Wednesday night in Bramlage Coliseum. Sports Headlines for Thursday

WICHITA, Kan.-The Wichita Sky Kings will make their 2023 season debut as one of the newest franchises of The Basketball League (TBL) March 3rd on the road against the Southeast Texas Panthers whose home base is located in Beaumont, Texas.

The newest Pro Basketball Wichita franchise is part of the Central division of the TBL.&nbsp;The Sky Kings is the latest venture from businessman Ben Hamd and his wife Lydia, who have investments in Wichita. Hamd is trying to generate interest in the newest pro team in Wichita. He is offering competitive pay to attract qualified pros and he has already rented out and paid for an entire season’s worth of games for the team to play at Koch Arena, which will be an outstanding venue for The Basketball League. 

The Sky Kings will be coached by Sean Flynn, the former Pratt Community College Coach who coached the Beavers in the KJCCC from 2018-2021. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Researching every player on Wichita’s roster you will notice that each player has made at least 40% of their 3-pointers at some level, whether it was in college or in the professional ranks. &nbsp;Flynn's contacts at the&nbsp;colleges have helped him land some of the top shooters available in the country.

One example is Charlie Marquardt, a former Division 2 sharpshooter who hit 14 3-pointers in a game in TBL play last season, Kam Williams, a 2018 Ohio State graduate who averaged 17.1 points in Denmark last year, and Matt Cerruti, a recent Albany grad who made 45% of his 3-pointers and averaged 11.3 points last season. Other Wichita Sky Kings signings include veteran point guard Derrick Colter, a 4-year starter at Duquesne who has played overseas in Portugal, France, Ukraine and Switzerland, Jachai Simmons, a 6-7 swing man in the TBL last season&nbsp;averaged 21 points per game, Julian Winton, a 2018 Tabor College graduate who averaged 25 points in the TBL last season, and Damari Milstead, who just finished his college career by averaging 12.1 points at Cal State Fullerton.

A very familiar name to local fans is Teddy Allen, who starred last season at New Mexico State, where he scored 37 points to lead the Aggies to an NCAA tournament upset over Connecticut. Allen also spent a year redshirting with the Wichita State Shockers, but never played for the team. Allen helped recruit two other former Aggies in Terrell Brown, a guard who shot 43% on threes in a season and was a former all-WAC player, and Johnny McCants, a 6-foot-7 forward who was an all-WAC defensive team player under former WSU assistant, Chris Jans last season.

 The team is currently conducting two-a-day practices at Calvary Church on Rock Road in Wichita. The Sky Kings will play in two scrimmages before the season and they hope to make an addition or two when the NBA G-League season is completed.

The Sky Kings will debut in Wichita on March 17 at 7 p.m. at Koch Arena versus the Shreveport, Louisiana Mavericks. All road and home games will be streamed the the <a href="https://tbltv.tv/SkyKings">TBL.TV Network</a>&nbsp;which is a pay-per-view network. 🏀 New pro basketball team's season opener is March 3rd

Back-to-back double-doubles, including just the second 20-20 game in Blue Dragon women's basketball history, propelled Hutchinson Community College freshman forward&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;to her first Jayhawk Conference Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week award on Tuesday.

The 5-foot-11 freshman from Lafayette, Louisiana had 19 points and 14 rebounds in an 80-41 victory against Colby last Tuesday. She the carried the Blue Dragons to a big home victory over Northwest Tech and a career-high 25 points and 20 rebounds, her second 20-rebound game of the season.

Duffy joins Ariella McGhee as the only players in Blue Dragon women's history to have 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. Duffy now owns 2 of the 5 all-time 20-rebound games in team history. 'For the week, Duffy averaged 22.0 points and 17.0 rebounds while shooting 52.8 percent from the field. She also averaged 2.5 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocked shots.

This is the third time a Blue Dragon player has won a conference player of the week award this season.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;has won the award twice this season.

🏀 HutchCC's Monae Duffy named KJCCC Player of the Week

Blue Dragon batters smacked four home runs and Blue Dragon pitchers allowed a combined three hits and struck out a combined 18 batters as the Hutchinson Community College baseball team returned to Hobart-Detter Field with a sweep of the Tabor College JV on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/bradford_blake_qa9v">Blake Bradford</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/edmunson_will_rdcc">Will Edmunson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/mustow_adam_9ls4">Adam Mustow</a>&nbsp;each hit home runs to lead the Blue Dragons to a 12-1 victory in five innings in Game 1. Bradford then went 3 for 4 with a leadoff home run to finished off a 10-0 victory in Game 2, also in five innings.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-3 overall. Hutchinson plays a three-game series at Rose State this weekend in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

Bradford had a huge day, going a combined 5 of 6 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and four runs scored. He extended his hitting streak to nine games.

The pitching staff had plenty of run support against the Blue Jays.

GAME 1 RECAP Tabor scored the first run of the game on an RBI groundout in the top of the second inning, but the Blue Dragons responded with five runs in the second inning and seven more runs in the third.

Mustow hit his first home run as a Blue Dragon, a two-run shot to center field in the third inning. Bradford later had a two-run single and Edmunson followed that with a three-run home run, his third of the season, to left field to cap a seven-run inning for a 12-1 lead.

Wilson (1-0) earned the win in his first career start. He threw two inning and allowed two hits and a run with two strikeouts. Johnson struck out five in two innings. Bell struck out the side in the top of the fifth.

The Blue Dragons had nine total hits with four extra-base hits.

Bradford was 2 of 2 with a walk, two runs scored a homer and three RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons. Gardner was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Edmunson also had three RBIs. Mustow and Wesslund had two RBIs each.

GAME 2 RECAP The Blue Dragons scored at least one run in each of their five offensive innings and collected 12 total hits.

Bradford went 3 for and hit for three-fourths of the cycle with a single, double and home run.

Mustow went 3 for 3 with a single, double and triple, driving in two runs with a two-run double in the Dragons' three-run first.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/davis_jon_ucpo">Jon Davis</a>&nbsp;tripled in going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Dragons had three triples in the game, tying for the third-most triples in single-game Blue Dragon history.

Neill made his first career start and earned the pitching victory. Neill pitched three innings. He struck out four and allowed just one hit.

Holstein worked a 1-2-3 fourth inning with a strikeout. Wickersham struck out the side in the fifth inning.

Edmundson singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Aroldis Chapman can earn up to $8.75 million as part of his one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals if he regains a job as a regular closer. The left-hander, who turns 35 on Feb. 28, is guaranteed $3.75 million under the deal announced Jan. 27. Chapman can earn $2.5 million based on games and $2.5 million based on games finished. Chapman averaged 100.7 mph on his fastball in 2016 but dropped below 100 mph in 2018 and was at a career-low 97.5 last season. He was 4-4 with a 4.46 ERA last season for the Yankees.

The clocks will count down from 30 seconds between batters. Between pitches, it will be 15 seconds with nobody on and 20 if there’s a baserunner. There are also limits on pickoff attempts that could help potential base stealers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The PGA Tour is coming off two big weeks with Scottie Scheffler winning in raucous Phoenix and Jon Rahm at Riviera. Tiger Woods caused the biggest buzz of all. Now it's LIV Golf's turn. The Saudi-funded league begins its second season and will be compared with two loud weeks on the PGA Tour, with two more to follow. AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson says this wasn't a great offseason for LIV. It signed six players, none prominent. It also had four executives leave. The LIV season starts Friday in the Mexican resort of Mayakoba. One upside is a new television partner in The CW Network.

The ceremonial groundbreaking for the arena that will house the league that’s being called TGL was held Tuesday at Palm Beach State College. Woods and McIlroy are among the co-founders and were there for the first step of actual construction. Play will begin early next year. Woods and McIlroy so far have 11 players committed to the league. Besides them, the league will include world No. 1 Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Police say Alabama basketball star Brandon Miller brought a teammate the gun that was used in a fatal shooting near campus. Tuscaloosa Police investigator Brandon Culpepper testified Tuesday that Miller brought Darius Miles’ gun to him on the night of the shooting after Miles texted him and asked him to do so. The allegation of Miller’s involvement on Jan. 15 came during a preliminary hearing for Miles and Michael Davis, who face capital murder charges for the death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Alabama coach Nate Oats says the team has been aware of Miller's alleged involvement and he was just in “the wrong spot at the wrong time."

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Jerome Tang leaped onto the courtside table and pumped his fists, then landed a spectacular dismount, before climbing into the student section and joining in the “Wabash Cannonball” dance to celebrate another ranked win.

Keyontae Johnson scored 25 points, Markquis Nowell added 14 points and 10 assists, and the No. 14 Wildcats followed a long first-half slump with a big second-half run to beat ninth-ranked Baylor 75-65 on Tuesday night.

In doing so, they gave their first-year coach a season sweep of Tang's former team and his longtime mentor, Scott Drew.

“I tried to tell y’all I’m athletic,” said Tang, who spent 19 years on the Baylor bench and helped bring a national title to Waco, Texas. “They were arguably the hottest team in the league, except the second half of the last game and this game.”

Cam Carter added 10 points for the Wildcats (21-7, 9-6 Big 12), who trailed 34-31 at the break before their 18-4 charge gave them control. They coasted from there to a school record-tying seventh win over a ranked team this season.

The last two — against Iowa State and Baylor — came after the Wildcats had lost four of five.

“I thought it was another typical Big 12 game,” Drew said. “K-State played like you're supposed to on your home court. I thought Keyontae Johnson, we really had trouble matching up with him pretty much all night, and then Nowell struggled from the field but 10 assists, zero turnovers. That's why they're first-team all-leaguers.”

“You know, it comes back to all of us. It's a team effort,” George said. “We just have to play harder, including myself.”

Baylor was coming off an 87-71 loss at No. 3 Kansas on Saturday in which the Bears were phenomenal in the first half, building a 17-point lead, and dreadful in the second, when they were outscored 55-26 while looking listless and lost.

The Bears' kept that Jekyll-and-Hyde act going Tuesday night.

Their sluggish finish in Lawrence carried over to the opening 13 minutes in Manhattan, when the Wildcats were able to methodically build a 24-13 lead. But after Drew called a timeout, his guys answered with a 3-pointer fueled 21-3 run over the next 6-plus minutes, allowing Baylor to take a 34-31 advantage into the break.

Cryer did most of the damage, going 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and scoring 11 first-half points.

“We did a really good job early and we messed up on some ball-screen coverages and they were able to make some 3s,” Tang said. “At halftime the team said, ‘Coach, if we do this it’ll make it better for us.' And the fact that they were thinking about how the problems were taking place and they came up with the solution, that was big time.”

Whatever the change, it certainly worked.

The Bears still led 40-37 in the opening minutes of the second half when Johnson scored back-to-back baskets to give Kansas State the lead. David N'Guessan kept the charge going, and it eventually reached 18-4 when Carter took a turnover by the Bears' Caleb Lohner for a dunk that made it 55-44 with just over 8 minutes left in the game.

“It's hard to stop transition offense, especially off turnovers,” Carter said. “We capitalized on that.”

The Wildcats stretched their lead to as many as 14 points before wrapping up the season sweep of the Bears.

“It started in practice,” Nowell said. “Whenever we're in practice, we come with that energy. We have a good scout, we play well. We've been focusing on practice a lot more, focusing on the defensive side, and we got two wins to show for it.”

Baylor struggled to find some help for George and Cryer on offense. Adam Flagler missed his first nine shots and finished with four points on 1-for-13 shooting, and Jalen Bridges had just six points while dealing with foul trouble all night.

Kansas State overcame a poor night from the 3-point arc (4 of 21) by dominating the guard-heavy Bears with a 42-16 edge in the paint. Many of those points came in transition, where the Wildcats had a 19-5 advantage off turnovers.

Baylor returns home to play eighth-ranked Texas on Saturday.

Kansas State visits Oklahoma State the same day.

🏀 MBB: Johnson leads No. 14 K-State to win over No. 9 Baylor

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Both Derby basketball teams had big second halves on Tuesday night, enabling the Panthers to sweep the Salthawks, 35-16 in the girls contest and 66-52 in the boys nightcap.

The Hutchinson game plan was simple on Tuesday.&nbsp; Control the tempo and slow the game down and work for a good shot. That worked great in the first half with the Panthers only having a slim one point lead at intermission, 10 to 9. But turnovers plagued the Salthawks in the second half, as Derby promptly took advantage of those turnovers and went on a 15 to 1 run in the third quarter to lead 25 to 10 going into the fourth.

Hutchinson attempted to make a run, but Derby was just too strong and the Panthers cruised to a 35 to 16 win over the Salthawk girls.

Hutchinson Guard Josie McLean went down with an apparent knee injury in the first half and did not return to action. Her knee appeared to give out as she was attempting a layup in the 2nd quarter. The full extent of her injury will not be known until she is evaluated on Wednesday.

Hutch was led in scoring by Grace Posch with 12 points. Aliyah Green had 4 points.&nbsp; No one else scored for Hutchinson.

Derby was led in scoring by Addy Brown with 13 points. Destiny Smith and Jaden Wilson each had 10 points apiece for the Panther girls.

The Salthawk girls loss puts Hutch in a three-way tie for the final home sub-state seed with Maize South and Andover Central all with 14-5 records. 

Final standings are determined by: 1. win-loss percentage; 2: head-to-head games; 3. marginal point differential with a maximum of +/- 15 per game.

The Salthawks (14-5) are tied with both Andover Central and Maize South in the win-loss percentage and swept Maize South this season. Hutch trails Andover Central in the point differential.

Hutchinson closes out the regular season by hosting Newton next Friday. 

The boys game went very similar to the girls contest with the Salthawks only trailing by 4 points at the half to a red hot shooting Derby team 33 to 29. But that was as close as the Salthawks would come the rest of the way, as Dallas Metzger scored 15 of his game high 18 in the third quarter and Salthawk turnovers held Hutch to only 8 points in the quarter, as Derby extended the lead to 16 points to led 53 to 37 going into the fourth.

Hutch could never get it going in the final quarter and suffered their first loss of the 2022-23 season 66 to 52 on Tuesday night.

Hutch was led in scoring by Nic Lange's 14 points. Terrell King had 9, Dauntay King 7, Wade Meyer, Garrett Robinson and Jay Lewis each scored 5. Devon Spiller added 6 points.

Derby was led by Kaden Franklin with 20 points along with Metzger's 18. Karson Fisher-Brown added 8 as well as Mason Anderson off the bench with 8. Jack Ulwelling added 6 in a reserve role.

Hutchinson (18-1) closes out the regular season by hosting Newton on Friday. Derby (14-5) hosts Maize.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Both Derby basketball teams had big second halves on Tuesday night, enabling the Panthers to sweep the Salthawks, 35-16 in the girls contest and 66-52 in the boys nightcap.GIRLS RECAPThe Hutchinson game plan was simple on Tuesday.&nbsp; Control the tempo and slow the game down and work for a good shot. That worked great in the first half with the Panthers only having a slim one point lead at intermission, 10 to 9. But turnovers plagued the Salthawks in the second half, as Derby promptly took advantage of those turnovers and went on a 15 to 1 run in the third quarter to lead 25 to 10 going into the fourth.Hutchinson attempted to make a run, but Derby was just too strong and the Panthers cruised to a 35 to 16 win over the Salthawk girls.Hutchinson Guard Josie McLean went down with an apparent knee injury in the first half and did not return to action. Her knee appeared to give out as she was attempting a layup in the 2nd quarter. The full extent of her injury will not be known until she is evaluated on Wednesday.Hutch was led in scoring by Grace Posch with 12 points. Aliyah Green had 4 points.&nbsp; No one else scored for Hutchinson.Derby was led in scoring by Addy Brown with 13 points. Destiny Smith and Jaden Wilson each had 10 points apiece for the Panther girls.The Salthawk girls loss puts Hutch in a three-way tie for the final home sub-state seed with Maize South and Andover Central all with 14-5 records. Final standings are determined by: 1. win-loss percentage; 2: head-to-head games; 3. marginal point differential with a maximum of +/- 15 per game.The Salthawks (14-5) are tied with both Andover Central and Maize South in the win-loss percentage and swept Maize South this season. Hutch trails Andover Central in the point differential.Hutchinson closes out the regular season by hosting Newton next Friday. Derby (17-2) hosts Maize on Friday.BOYS RECAPThe boys game went very similar to the girls contest with the Salthawks only trailing by 4 points at the half to a red hot shooting Derby team 33 to 29. But that was as close as the Salthawks would come the rest of the way, as Dallas Metzger scored 15 of his game high 18 in the third quarter and Salthawk turnovers held Hutch to only 8 points in the quarter, as Derby extended the lead to 16 points to led 53 to 37 going into the fourth.Hutch could never get it going in the final quarter and suffered their first loss of the 2022-23 season 66 to 52 on Tuesday night.Hutch was led in scoring by Nic Lange's 14 points. Terrell King had 9, Dauntay King 7, Wade Meyer, Garrett Robinson and Jay Lewis each scored 5. Devon Spiller added 6 points.Derby was led by Kaden Franklin with 20 points along with Metzger's 18. Karson Fisher-Brown added 8 as well as Mason Anderson off the bench with 8. Jack Ulwelling added 6 in a reserve role.Hutchinson (18-1) closes out the regular season by hosting Newton on Friday.
