LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Tyler Shough threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score and Texas Tech outlasted Kansas 43-28 on Saturday night.

Shough rushed for a 9-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Texas Tech (5-5, 3-4 Big 12 Conference) a 33-21 lead. It was the first score by either team in the second half.

Tahj Brooks sealed the victory with a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:33 remaining in the game. Four different Red Raiders scored four rushing touchdowns in the win.

“We had a different play, but they came out in a soft box and I knew that we could knife them underneath because of the wide box,” Shough said. “Tahj (Brooks) made him miss and it was just a great play.”

Shough was 16-for-25 passing for 246 yards and a touchdown in his first start since the opening week of the season. Texas Tech totaled 510 yards of offense with 264 of them on the ground.

“The one thing that Shough did was that when a play wasn’t there, he pulled it down, got vertical and was able to get yards,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said. “Then we had our running back come in like a three-headed monster and we got four rushing touchdowns.”

The Red Raiders used a brief two-quarterback system with Shough and Donovan Smith. Smith rushed for a 6-yard touchdown on the opening drive where Shough was responsible for 57 of the 75 yards on the drive.

SaRodorick Thompson Jr. rushed for 68 yards&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TexasTechFB?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">with a 36-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;for the Red Raiders. Mason Tharp caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Shough to give the Red Raiders a 24-7 lead midway through the first half.

The Jayhawks managed to claw back to trail 27-21 at halftime on Jason Bean's 16-yard touchdown run and his 3-yard scoring toss to Devin Neel. Quentin Skinner and Bean connected for a 20-yard touchdown to pull the Jayhawks within 33-28 with eight minutes remaining in the game, but the Red Raiders used a Trey Wolff field goal from and a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TexasTechFB?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">strip sack that led to the final touchdown</a>&nbsp;to hold on for the win.

“We talked this week about finishing games in the fourth quarter,” McGuire said. “I thought we did such a good job of finishing that game as a team.”

Bean was 17-for-28 passing for 270 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score in his fourth start of the season after taking over for the injured Jalon Daniels. Jared Casey and Luke Grimm were the benefactors of two Bean passing scores in the first half.

Neel rushed for 190 yards just a week after rushing for 224 yards against Oklahoma State.

"At the end of the day, Texas Tech executed,” Kansas head coach Lance Leipold said. “We had opportunities to make plays, close gaps and we didn’t. There were a lot of different things in this game that we were outplayed in.”

Kansas accumulated 525 yards and 293 came through the passing game.

Kansas: The Jayhawks found success in the passing game. Bean found Casey for a 66-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-1 play for an early score. Kansas struggled to limit the Red Raiders rushing attack. A pair of Bean turnovers and missed field goals hampered Kansas.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders entered the game eighth in the conference in rushing offense averaging 143.5 yards per game. Shough led the way as the Red Raiders accumulated 264 rushing yards. The secondary couldn’t slow the Jayhawks giving up 15.4 yards per completion.

Texas Tech won its fifth home game of the season. It was the first time since 2009 the Red Raiders recorded five or more wins at home in a season. With one final game in Lubbock slated on the schedule, Texas Tech could match the 6-1 home record of its 2009 squad. Texas Tech needs one win to become bowl-eligible.

"If you start thinking about variables and what needs to happen or can happen, as soon as you start getting too much into that you're not going to do what you need to do in order to be successful," Klieman said. "It's such a difficult league that you'd better focus on the task at hand and control what you can control." Coming off a tough 34-27 loss to Texas, No. 19 K-State prepares to battle the Bears in Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff (FS1) at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. The Wildcats will have to draw upon their night-game road-warrior mentality once again. All of three of their Big 12 road games have been at night this season. "There's something about going on the road that this team really embraces," quarterback Adrian Martinez said. "We embrace that us-against-everybody mentality. That's our mindset. That's how we approach it and really bond together and realize that it's just us in this big stadium and we're going to take them on. "We want to take the fight to them. That's the game plan every week, but especially against Baylor. They're a physical group and play tough football, but so do we."

Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen earlier in the week asked for fans to pack the 45,140-capacity McLane Stadium. Third-year head coach Dave Aranda is 12-3 in games played in Waco. The high temperature is expected to be around 55 degrees with a low of 32 degrees in Waco on Saturday. "We need as many fans as we can get out to the game," Shapen said. "It's going to be a night game, it's going to be a big game, and we need everyone there." K-State, Baylor and No. 18 Texas all have identical records — 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12 — good for second place in the league standings with three games to go. The Wildcats next travel to West Virginia before closing out the regular season against Kansas. Meanwhile, No. 7 TCU, No. 18 Texas and Baylor still must play one another, &nbsp;setting up an exciting finish in a league that already has featured 18 interconference games that have been decided by 10 or fewer points. K-State will look to change its recent trend against Baylor. The Wildcats have dropped four straight in the series and the last two trips to Waco have been one-score games —&nbsp;37-34 in 2018 and 32-31 in 2020. The Wildcats suffered a 20-10 loss last season in Manhattan. We have to have great plans because it's going to be a big challenge for us. They're playing with a lot of confidence." Since starting out 1-2 in the league, Baylor has won three straight games against Kansas (35-23), at Texas Tech (45-17) and at Oklahoma (38-35). Martinez, who threw for 329 yards against Texas, closes in on a rare mark as well. With 273 passing yards and 83 rushing yards, Martinez would join Colin Kaepernick as the only two FBS players to throw for 10,000 yards and rush for 3,000 in a career. Martinez has 106 carries for 617 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. The Wildcats have rushed for at least 200 yards in five games, including at Oklahoma (275) and against Texas Tech (343). "We're able to put packages together that puts stress on people not only with our ability up front but with two dynamic ball carriers," K-State offensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/collin-klein/1641">Collin Klein</a>&nbsp;said. "Our guys have executed and have made plays. When we've gotten space and given them creases we've made them pay. We need more of that." Martinez has completed 63.1% of his passes for 1,236 yards and six touchdowns and suffered his first interception against Texas after starting the season by attempting a school-record 155 passes without throwing a pick. Baylor's defense has a Big 12-leading 12 interceptions this season, including five in the last two contests, the most by the Bears in a two-game stretch since 1980. &nbsp; "You play good teams and close ballgames, it's going to be the difference," Klein said. "Obviously they've been able to make those plays. They do a great job in coverages that they have, a lot of man principles in it, and they do a good job of playing tight coverage. They have some robbers that are lurking, so if a tight man-coverage ball gets tipped, there are people around who've been able to bring it down. It's going to be a great challenge for us." Baylor features a trio of running backs who've each rushed for more than 300 yards this season. Richard Reese has 798 rushing yards and needs 84 yards to break the school record for rushing yards by a freshman. His 13 rushing touchdowns also leads all freshmen in the FBS. Junior Craig "Sqwirl" Williams had 25 carries for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the win at Oklahoma last Saturday. Williams has 68 carries for 401 yards and four touchdowns this season. Qualan Jones has 65 carries for 362 yards and six touchdowns this season as well. "They keep rolling," K-State defensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/joe-klanderman/1640">Joe Klanderman</a>&nbsp;said. "The wide zone and stretch scheme that they run, there are a lot of different types of players that can thrive in that system. What makes that thing go — both of those types of runners can get yards after contact — is their offensive line and how well they identify things. They're one of the most athletic offensive lines in the conference. They're very, very good at what they do." Shapen is no stranger to K-State. As a redshirt freshman, he was thrust into action in the second quarter of last season's game against the Wildcats following an injury to Gerry Bohanon, and he completed 16 of 21 passes for 137 yards and had five carries for 44 yards. This season, Shapen has completed 66.8% of his passes for 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, averaging 216.8 passing yards per contest. "We were pretty excited when he came into the game last year and that dissipated kind of fast," Klanderman said. "He throws the ball really well. He's a tremendously athletic guy and he probably throws the ball better than what they were able to throw it last year. He just seems to have a very good command."

K-State will be tested against a Baylor offense that ranks among the nation's leaders in fourth-down attempts. The Bears are 21-for-30 (70.0%) on fourth down — going for it on fourth down an average of 3.8 times per game. K-State ranks 14th&nbsp;nationally in allowing opponents to convert just 7-of-21 fourth-down situations. "Sometimes they treat third-and-1 like it's second-and-1 and you're going to get some shot plays," Klanderman said. "It makes it really difficult for you to be in exactly what you want to be in defensively." K-State was where it wanted to be prior to the loss to Texas, but now the Wildcats have the opportunity to win a third Big 12 road game for the first time since 2017. The Wildcats feel equipped for the mission. "When we go in there, Baylor is going to have 50,000 and it's going to be against our 125 players, so we go in there with a chip on our shoulder, and want to silence the crowd and silence the noise," tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/ben-sinnott/7981">Ben Sinnott</a>&nbsp;said. "One thing we try to emphasize, especially on the road, is being the most physical team and taking it to them right away, not letting the crowd get into it, and not giving them any momentum to put us at a disadvantage."

Players know a win could carry positive implications with just a few games left to go. &nbsp; "The competitive nature of this conference is pretty unique," Martinez said. "Every team is pretty good and the margin for error is very small. Placing TCU and Oklahoma State and Texas and now Baylor, they're all really good teams and are all in line for the same spot. It's highly competitive." K-State figures itself to be highly competitive as well. The Wildcats have proven as much thanks in part to their road-warrior mentality.

"Obviously they've been able to make those plays. They do a great job in coverages that they have, a lot of man principles in it, and they do a good job of playing tight coverage. They have some robbers that are lurking, so if a tight man-coverage ball gets tipped, there are people around who've been able to bring it down. It's going to be a great challenge for us." Baylor features a trio of running backs who've each rushed for more than 300 yards this season. Richard Reese has 798 rushing yards and needs 84 yards to break the school record for rushing yards by a freshman. His 13 rushing touchdowns also leads all freshmen in the FBS. Junior Craig "Sqwirl" Williams had 25 carries for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the win at Oklahoma last Saturday. Williams has 68 carries for 401 yards and four touchdowns this season. Qualan Jones has 65 carries for 362 yards and six touchdowns this season as well. "They keep rolling," K-State defensive coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/joe-klanderman/1640">Joe Klanderman</a>&nbsp;said. "The wide zone and stretch scheme that they run, there are a lot of different types of players that can thrive in that system. What makes that thing go — both of those types of runners can get yards after contact — is their offensive line and how well they identify things. They're one of the most athletic offensive lines in the conference. They're very, very good at what they do." Shapen is no stranger to K-State. As a redshirt freshman, he was thrust into action in the second quarter of last season's game against the Wildcats following an injury to Gerry Bohanon, and he completed 16 of 21 passes for 137 yards and had five carries for 44 yards. This season, Shapen has completed 66.8% of his passes for 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, averaging 216.8 passing yards per contest. "We were pretty excited when he came into the game last year and that dissipated kind of fast," Klanderman said. "He throws the ball really well. He's a tremendously athletic guy and he probably throws the ball better than what they were able to throw it last year. He just seems to have a very good command." <figure>

Redshirt junior Jalen Wilson finished just shy of a double-double with game highs of 21 points and nine rebounds on the night.

Kansas dominated the game from the jump. Wilson scored nine of the first 14 points for the Jayhawks and finished with 17 points in the half. Already holding onto a 16-6 lead, KU went on a 10-0 run to push the advantage to 26-9 with 9:11 remaining in the first half. A layup from KU freshman MJ Rice in his first career game forced a timeout from the Bison.

The timeout did not slow down the Kansas offense as KU would go on an 11-0 run shortly after to make the score 40-13. KU held a 48-19 lead at the break after sinking six three-pointers and shooting 55.9 percent from the field in the first half. The 29-point halftime lead was the largest since 2019 vs. Monmouth when Kansas was leading by 38 points at halftime.

All the way back at the preseason Blue Dragon time trial in August, Hutchinson Community College cross country head coach Justin Riggs received an early sign just how good his women's team might be in 2022.

Third-year sophomore and the team's top runner over her first two seasons,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/cocking_louise_gbqv">Louise Cocking</a>, posted a PR on that August day of the time trial. Cocking finished fourth.

"It really showed how well we could do as a team," said the All-America Cocking. "These girls have come up by leaps and bounds. We work so well together in practice. We have that balance that we all want it really badly, but we are all supportive of each other."

The Blue Dragons started the season ranked No. 2 in the preseason USTFCCCA rankings. After a one-point loss to Cloud County at the Ollie Isom Invitational, the Dragons slipped to No. 3. That's the ranking they will take into Saturday's NJCAA Division I Championship in Tallahassee Florida. The Women's Division I race is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. at Apalachee Regional Park.

"This has been a fun year," Riggs said. "We went to a lot of challenging meets. We didn't win a meet until Region VI, but we challenged ourselves and ran against a lot of NCAA Division I and Division II teams and some good NAIA schools, knowing that it would benefit you when it came to the postseason."

Just 13 days later, Larson broke the school record with a time of 18:12.1 at the Chili Pepper Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"It's been a great year. I didn't expect the team to be so far up, but we've stayed up there," Larson said. "It's been an eye-opening season. In high school, I was exposed to some high-level runners and it had me prepared to run at the next level. But this season has really shown me what I am capable of."

Haven freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/hoskinson_taylor_jjhw">Taylor Hoskinson</a>&nbsp;has another freshman who has seen steady improvement in each race this year. Blue Dragon Cross Country Team rides dream season into Nationals

MAIZE, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School football team gave the best team thus far this season in the western half of the state everything it wanted Friday night in Maize, but came up just short 21-14.

Hutchinson's potential game-tying drive ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down in the Maize red zone in the game's final 10 seconds.

Hutchinson played ball control football about as well as it can be played prior to halftime, with a time-consuming 19-play, 74-yard, 10:20 drive that spanned the vast majority of the first quarter ending in a Nic Lange touchdown with 11:24 to go in the second. The Salthawks led 7-0 at that point.

Maize struck back with a long touchdown pass from Avery Johnson to Bryce Cohoon at 8:46 before halftime and it was 7-7 at that point.

Another successful Hutchinson drive spanned 80 yards, with a 60 yard Noah Khokhar sprint putting them in scoring position and a five-yard Devon Spiller touchdown run finishing off the drive at 5:20 before halftime to put Hutch up 14-7.

Hutch went for an onsides kick to try to keep the ball away from the Maize offense and got it, but were not able to convert and then the Eagles struck back with Johnson throwing again, this time to running back Daeshaun Carter with just seven seconds remaining in the half to tie the game at 14.

As it turned out, the only scoring of the second half happened after a Maize interception of a Nic Lange pass pinned the Eagles back at their own one. Johnson broke a play out to the 19 with his legs, then found pay dirt with his arm, throwing deep to Justin Stephens who took it to the house with 4:40 to go in the third to put Maize up 21-14.

The Eagles missed a potential game sealing field goal in the fourth quarter prior to Hutchinson's final drive.

Johnson was good enough, going 6 for 16 with 191 yards and three touchdown passes, but Hutch High's defense and ball control gave them a chance at the end.&nbsp;

Khokhar ran for 102 yards on 15 carries, mostly buoyed by the 60 yard run before halftime and Lange made big play after big play on the final drive to help get the Salthawks in position, with clutch catches by Kade Smith twice converting do or die fourth downs and Kellen O' Sullivan also snatching the ball when it had to be done on the final trip down the field, but a bone-crushing hit on the final fourth down play left the ball on the turf and Maize with the win.

The Eagles will host Hays in a state semifinal on Friday the 18th. Hutchinson ends its season at 8-3.

🏈 Hutchinson loses in 5A playoffs to Maize 21-14

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa-The final game of the 2022 regular season features the Jayhawk Conference champion against the Iowa Conference champion on Saturday.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College Football team travels to the No. 4 Iowa Western Reivers at 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The ramifications of Saturday's matchup are simple. The Blue Dragons are fighting for a Top-2 seed for the NJCAA National Playoffs and to host a national semifinal game. The Reivers are battling for their playoff lives after falling to Coffeyville last week.

The Blue Dragons are riding a 15-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup after a 53-0 victory over Independence last week at Gowans Stadium. The Blue Dragon defense set the tone on the first drive with a sack/fumble by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/green_jr._rodney_3xc7">Rodney Green Jr.</a>&nbsp;which was returned for a 25-yard touchdown by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/drummer_ja-mez_cv52">Ja'Mez Drummer</a>. The Blue Dragons allowed just 63 total yards and four first downs to the Pirates last week.

After taking an early 7-0 lead over Coffeyville last Saturday in Coffeyville, Iowa Western was stung by a blocked field goal and 62-yard return for a touchdown and the Red Ravens rode the wave of that momentum for a 23-7 victory over the then-No. 2 Reivers. Iowa Western more than doubled Coffeyville in total yardage (325-158) and had 21 first downs to the Red Ravens' five. The Reivers committed four turnovers against Coffeyville.

Saturday's game features two of the top defenses in the NJCAA.

The Blue Dragons are second in the nation in scoring defense at 10.1 points allowed per game. The Reivers are No. 1 at 9.8 points per game. The Blue Dragons rank 10th in total yards allowed (252.1 ypg), fifth in rushing defense (70.0 ypg) and 22nd in pass defense (182.1 ypg). The Reivers rank No. 2 in total defense (165.8 ypg), No. 2 in rushing defense (40.7 ypg) and No. 5 in pass defense (125.1 ypg).

Saturday's matchup also features 2 of the 3 finalists for the inaugural Walter Jones Trophy, which represents the top player in the NJCAA this season. Blue Dragon sophomore quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;and Iowa Western defensive end Jackson Filer are both finalists for the award.

The Blue Dragons are 2-4 all-time against Iowa Western, 1-2 at Titan Stadium. The last trip to Council Bluffs for Hutchinson was a 34-27 Blue Dragon victory in 2019

No. 1 Blue Dragons travel to Iowa Western for key matchup

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 6 Hutchinson (5-0) has scored at least 113 points in each of its first five games of the season.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4522cb4d-f63b-4e5a-bebf-30c8c0c31c30">Two days after dropping the second-most points in a single game in school history (139)</a>, the Dragons poured in 121 against Victoria College.

Hutchinson made a record 18 threes to begin the season, hit 16 Wednesday against Labette, and turned in 14 against Victoria College.

Ty Frierson stayed hot in his starting role with 19 points. The freshman has been in the starting lineup since the second game of the season.

Frierson managed just three points in his first start, but has since averaged 19.3 points per game.

Aaron Franklin also added 19 points to go with seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Seven Dragons (Frierson, Franklin, Potter, Leyba, Bundy, Green and Garrison) scored in double figures.&nbsp;

Hutchinson hit 33.3% of its three-point attempts. The Dragons shot 47.9% overall.&nbsp;

Victoria was led by Chandler Collins-Johnson's 29.&nbsp;

"We were good in spots," coach Tommy DeSalme said after the game. The second-year coach said his team "just made enough plays" but has to "pay closer attention to detail."

DeSalme said his team could do better, especially defensively.&nbsp;

Hutchinson plays Wilbur Wright College Saturday in Great Bend at 3 p.m.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 5 Hutchinson shot out to a 20-point advantage Friday afternoon against Labette at the Cougar Booster Club Classic.

That lead dissipated with 8:04 left as the Dragons (5-0) held on to a 53-51 lead.

Mya Williams scored just two points in the first half before exploding for 19 in the second frame. Her 21 points were second-most for Hutchinson as the Dragons were led by Journey Armstead's 23.

Armstead made good on 4 of 6 three-pointers as she knocked down 8 of her 10 shots overall. She added four assists and three steals.

Labette () got 17 points from starter Janiya Reed and 18 bench points from Nisea Burrell.

Hutchinson closed the game on a 21-12 run to remain perfect on the year.

Hutchinson shot 45.8% from distance and 51.9% overall.

Hutchinson is back in Great Bend Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff against Redlands.

Redshirt junior Jalen Wilson finished just shy of a double-double with game highs of 21 points and nine rebounds on the night.Kansas dominated the game from the jump. Wilson scored nine of the first 14 points for the Jayhawks and finished with 17 points in the half. Already holding onto a 16-6 lead, KU went on a 10-0 run to push the advantage to 26-9 with 9:11 remaining in the first half. A layup from KU freshman MJ Rice in his first career game forced a timeout from the Bison.The timeout did not slow down the Kansas offense as KU would go on an 11-0 run shortly after to make the score 40-13. KU held a 48-19 lead at the break after sinking six three-pointers and shooting 55.9 percent from the field in the first half. The 29-point halftime lead was the largest since 2019 vs. Monmouth when Kansas was leading by 38 points at halftime.The Jayhawks would go on to lead by as many as 34 in the second half. North Dakota State trimmed that deficit to 23 points, but that was as close as the Bison would get the remainder of the contest.Rice finished his first career game with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists, while fellow freshman Gradey Dick had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Bobby Pettiford Jr. dished out a career-high eight assists.For a second straight game, Kansas controlled the glass with a 46-32 edge. The Jayhawks grabbed 13 offensive rebounds in the contest and scored 46 points in the paint.Kansas will face No. 7 Duke in the State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 8:30 p.m. (Central) in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The contest will be televised on ESPN. Kansas is 6-5 all-time in the Champions Classic, including 2-1 versus Duke in the event.

Two Royals are among this year’s finalists, including infielder&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;and right-handed relief pitcher&nbsp;Scott Barlow.

Along with Peña, Witt Jr. is one of two rookies among the 10 finalists at the position, and he’s two years younger than the next youngest shortstop finalist.

Witt Jr. is one of two finalists at shortstop to record at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 2022, along with Turner. Regardless of position, Witt Jr. this season became just the fifth player in the last 49 years to record at least 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases in his age-22 season or younger, following&nbsp;Ronald Acuña Jr.&nbsp;(2019),&nbsp;Mike Trout&nbsp;(2012-13),&nbsp;Álex Rodríguez&nbsp;(1998) and&nbsp;Barry Bonds&nbsp;(1987).

Witt Jr. appeared in 150 games as a rookie in 2022, including 98 games (96 starts) at shortstop. He was one of four players in American League history to record at least 20 homers and 30 steals while playing at least 95 games at shortstop, following&nbsp;Jonathan Villar&nbsp;(2019), Rodríguez (1998) and&nbsp;Bert Campaneris&nbsp;(1970).

Barlow, who is one of 22 finalists among relief pitchers, recorded a career-high 24 saves in 2022, which ranked 6th&nbsp;in the American League, and pitched to a career-best 2.18 ERA (18 ER in 74.1 IP), which ranked 11th&nbsp;among American League relievers. He also earned a career-best 7 wins, which tied for 3rd&nbsp;among American League relievers, and he did not allow an earned run in 56 of his team-high 69 appearances.

Barlow was especially good in his 39 appearances at Kauffman Stadium, where he pitched to a 1.50 ERA (7 ER in 42.0 IP) and .185 opponents’ average (27-for-146). The former marked the best home ERA in the Majors in 2022 (min. 40.0 IP), lower than&nbsp;Justin Verlander,&nbsp;Sandy Alcantara&nbsp;and&nbsp;Tony Gonsolin, who all tied for 2nd at 1.64.

COOPERSTOWN, NY — The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this week announced the eight-player ballot that will be considered by its Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee for Hall of Fame election for the Class of 2023. The Contemporary Era Committee will meet on Dec. 4 at baseball’s Winter Meetings in San Diego, Calif.

Six batters and two pitchers comprise the eight-name Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot, which features candidates whose primary contribution to the game came since 1980.

The Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot includes Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. All candidates are living.

The results of the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee vote will be announced live on MLB Network’s “MLB Tonight” at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Any candidate who receives votes on 75 percent of the ballots cast by the committee will earn election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 23, 2023, along with any electees who emerge from the 2023 Baseball Writers’ Association of America election, to be announced on Jan. 24, 2023.

The Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee is one of three groups eligible for consideration as part of the Era Committee process, which provides an avenue for Hall of Fame consideration to managers, umpires and executives, as well as players retired for more than 15 seasons. The Contemporary Baseball Era features two distinct ballots: One for players (considered this fall) and one for managers, executives and umpires (considered in the fall of 2023).

Following the restructuring of the Era Committee process in the spring of 2022, the two Contemporary Baseball Era ballots were instituted, along with the Classic Baseball Era, which includes all candidates whose primary contribution to the game came prior to 1980. The Classic Baseball Era Committee will meet for the first time in the fall of 2024.

The eight Contemporary Baseball Era player finalists were selected by the BBWAA-appointed Historical Overview Committee from all eligible candidates among players whose most significant career impact was realized since 1980. Eligible candidates include players who played in at least 10 major league seasons and have been retired for 15 or more seasons. All candidates must not be on Baseball’s Ineligible List.

The Contemporary Baseball Era player ballot was determined this fall by the Historical Overview Committee, comprised of 11 veteran historians: Bob Elliott (Canadian Baseball Network); Jim Henneman (formerly Baltimore Sun); Steve Hirdt (Stats Perform); Rick Hummel (St. Louis Post-Dispatch); David O’Brien (The Athletic); Jack O’Connell (BBWAA); Jim Reeves (formerly Fort Worth Star-Telegram); Tracy Ringolsby (InsideTheSeams.com); Glenn Schwarz (formerly San Francisco Chronicle); Susan Slusser (San Francisco Chronicle); and Mark Whicker (Los Angeles News Group).

The eight candidates for Contemporary Baseball Era Committee consideration for the Class of 2023:

• Albert Belle played 12 seasons with the Indians, White Sox and Orioles before a hip injury cut short his career. A five-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Belle was three-time American League RBI champion who finished second or third in the league’s Most Valuable Player balloting in each season from 1994-96. He remains the only player in history to post a 50 home run/50 double season, having done so in 1995.

• Barry Bonds played 22 seasons with the Pirates and Giants, winning seven National League Most Valuable Player Awards and eight Gold Glove Awards in the outfield. MLB’s all-time home run leader with 762, Bonds set single-season records for home runs (73 in 2001) and walks (232 in 2004). He led the NL in on-base percentage 10 times and paced the league in batting average twice.

• Roger Clemens pitched 24 seasons for the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros, winning seven Cy Young Awards. Clemens was named the 1986 AL Most Valuable Player and earned All-Star Game berths in 11 seasons. A two-time World Series champion with the Yankees (1999-2000), Clemens led his league in earned-run average seven times and was a five-time 20-game winner.

• Don Mattingly played 14 big league seasons – all with the Yankees – and compiled a .307 batting average while earning six All-Star Game selections, nine Gold Glove Awards at first base and the 1985 American League Most Valuable Player Award. A three-time Silver Slugger Award winner and the 1984 AL batting champion, Mattingly has managed in the big leagues for 12 seasons and was named the 2020 National League Manager of the Year.

• Fred McGriff totaled 493 home runs over 19 seasons with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Devil Rays, Cubs and Dodgers that included eight 100-RBI campaigns and six years where he finished in the Top 10 of his league’s MVP voting. The 1994 All-Star Game MVP and one of the leaders of the 1995 Braves team that won the World Series, McGriff led his league in homers twice while compiling a .377 career on-base percentage.

• Dale Murphy earned back-to-back NL Most Valuable Player Awards with the Braves in 1982-83 during a five-year stretch where he won five Gold Glove Awards in center field and four Silver Slugger Awards. A seven-time All-Star who played 18 seasons with the Braves, Phillies and Rockies, Murphy led the league in home runs twice, RBI twice and slugging percentage twice while posting a 30 homer/30 steal season in 1983.

• Rafael Palmeiro totaled 3,020 hits, 569 homers and 1,835 RBI over 20 big league seasons with the Cubs, Rangers and Orioles, earning four All-Star Game selections, three Gold Glove Awards at first base and two Silver Slugger Awards. He posted 10 seasons with at least 100 RBI and 10 seasons with at least 30 home runs while finishing his career with more walks (1,353) than strikeouts (1,348).

• Curt Schilling is one of only four retired pitchers with at least 3,000 strikeouts and fewer than 1,000 walks. Schilling was named the 2001 World Series co-MVP and owns an 11-2 mark with a 2.23 ERA in 19 career Postseason appearances. He won 216 regular season games over 20 seasons with the Orioles, Astros, Phillies, Diamondbacks and Red Sox and was named to six All-Star Games.

Bonds, Clemens on contemporary Hall of Fame ballot

After a week averaging better than 27 points and posting two career-high scoring totals and a career-first double-double, Hutchinson Community College men's basketball's&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball's National Player of the Week, the national office released on Wednesday.

A 6-foot-5 redshirt freshman from Kansas City, Franklin had opening-week point total of 28 points against Fort Scott, 34 points against No. 7 Triton and 20 against NEO.

Franklin is the first Blue Dragon to earn national weekly honors since Matt Mayers in 2021.

Franklin averaged 26.7 points per game and shot 53.7 percent overall and was 10 of 35 (40.0) percent from 3-point range last week.

In the Blue Dragons 113-105 win over No. 7 Triton, Franklin poured in a career-high 34 points on 16 of 23 shooting. Against NEO, Franklin had his first career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Franklin averaged 9.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has made its first change of the season to its “Sunday Night Football” schedule by moving the Nov. 20 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers into prime time.

The game between the AFC West rivals will kick off at 8:20 p.m. EST on NBC with the matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers moving to 4:25 p.m. EST on CBS.

The Chargers will appear on Sunday night in consecutive weeks. They will travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in prime time on Sunday. The Bolts are also scheduled to host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night on Jan. 1 in Week 17.

The Chiefs will be making their third of four scheduled Sunday night appearances. They defeated Tampa Bay on Oct. 2 and Tennessee in overtime this past Sunday. Kansas City is also scheduled to play Denver under the lights on Dec. 11.

The Lakers said James felt discomfort in his left leg. He appeared to be experiencing pain in his groin. Paul George scored 29 points as the Clippers extended their recent domination of their arena roommates with their ninth consecutive victory over the Lakers. These aren't the NFL standings anyone envisioned before the season. It's not unusual for each NFL postseason to have a few new faces. Seven of the 14 playoff teams each of the last two seasons hadn't reached the postseason the previous year. What makes this season stand out is that several playoff contenders are relevant for the first time in several years.

If Allen can't play, the Bills would turn one of the NFL's best offenses over to backup Case Keenum. Allen was hurt in the final minutes of a 20-17 loss to the New York Jets last weekend.

The Rams believe Stafford's symptoms resulted from action in last Sunday's 16-13 loss at Tampa Bay, but they haven't identified a specific hit. McVay said the Rams haven't determined whether Stafford can play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. John Wolford, a Rams backup since 2019, is likely to start if Stafford can't go. Stafford has been one of the NFL's most durable quarterbacks for the past 12 seasons.
