🏀 WBB: K-State returns to Paradise Jam for third time

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Justice Sueing scored 23 of his career-high 33 points in the second half to help Ohio State hold off No. 21 Texas Tech for an 80-73 win in the fifth-place game in the Maui Invitational. Sueing scored 15 points in a row for the Buckeyes in the last 10 minutes to turn back Tech each time it threatened to make a run. Ohio State shot 52% from the field, made all 18 of its free throws and never trailed after the first two minutes. Texas Tech got a career-high 21 points from Daniel Batcho and 19 from Kevin Obanor.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — First-year guard Gradey Dick scored a season-high 25 points to help No. 3 Kansas beat North Carolina State 80-74 in the Battle 4 Atlantis opener. It gave coach Bill Self a successful return to the bench after a four-game suspension. Dick had 18 points on six 3-pointers in the first half before going 1 for 8 from the field after halftime. Kansas led 39-31 at halftime but had to grind this one out to the final minutes. Casey Morsell scored 21 points to lead the Wolfpack, while Terquavion Smith added 19 points.

WACO, Texas (AP) — True freshman Keyonte George scored 17 points, Adam Flagler added 13 with nine assists and seventh-ranked Baylor pulled away from McNeese State for a 89-60 victory. LJ Cryer had 16 points for the 5-1 Bears. The Bears had 30 assists on their 34 made field goals. Dale Bonner had 12 assists with seven points. Langston Love scored 11 points. Jonathan Massie and Zach Scott each had 12 points for 2-4 McNeese State.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Fourth-ranked TCU and Iowa State are on the opposite ends of the Big 12 standings. The Horned Frogs just keep winning close games, and are still in position to make the four-team College Football Playoff. The last-place Cyclones on Saturday wrap up their first losing season since coach Matt Campbell's debut in 2016. They are coming off their sixth Big 12 loss by a touchdown or less. But they could play big spoilers in their final game. The Cyclones have won three in a row against TCU and Iowa native quarterback Max Duggan.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says he was realistic with his 24th-ranked Texas Longhorns about how they can still get into the Big 12 championship game. Dave Aranda says he got philosophical with his Baylor team. The two Texas teams face each other in Friday's regular-season finale. The 6-5 Bears are coming of a crushing last-play loss to the league's undefeated playoff contender. The 7-4 Longhorns first to beat Baylor for a chance to get to the Big 12 title game and then wait until Saturday night to see if Kansas can beat 15th-ranked Kansas State.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma visits Texas Tech in the regular-season finale for a pair of first-time college head coaches who can clinch winning seasons. It's been a disappointing year for Brent Venables and the Sooners. The perennial Big 12 champs were ranked as high as sixth before fading to also-rans in the Big 12. Lifelong Texan Joey McGuire can clinch a winning season in his debut with the Red Raiders. They didn't have nearly the expectations of the Sooners. Both teams are eligible for bowls.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Changes are afoot in the Big 12, even before Oklahoma and Texas depart for the Southeastern Conference. Fourth-ranked TCU has replaced the Sooners as the Big 12 team in the running for a College Football Playoff spot. The Horned Frogs already are in the conference title game heading into their regular-season finale against Iowa State. No. 15 Kansas State is a surprise contender for the other spot in the title game. The Wildcats would get in if No. 24 Texas loses to Baylor on Friday. If Texas wins, Kansas State would need to beat Kansas on Saturday night to qualify.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — College basketball's early season tournaments are proving more valuable than ever for teams trying to forge an identity with multiple transfers. The transfer portal has led to more roster turnover and upheaval each year. Holiday tournaments like this week's Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas take on more value as teams need competitive games to figure out their rotations and chemistry with new additions. North Carolina State coach Kevin Keatts says there's more value for that growth in games than in practices. GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands&nbsp;– Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/keyontae-johnson/9899">Keyontae Johnson's</a>&nbsp;jumper with 4.7 seconds helped lift Kansas State to a 61-59 win over LSU to capture the 2022 Cayman Islands Classic Championship on Wednesday night before 2,400 fans at The John Gray Gym. The tournament title was the 17th&nbsp;in school history and the first since winning the 2018 Paradise Jam. Johnson (16 points) and fellow seniors&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/markquis-nowell/9650">Markquis Nowell</a>&nbsp;(18 points) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/desi-sills/9686">Desi Sills</a>&nbsp;(16 points) combined for 50 of the Wildcats' 61 points, including 22 of their 28 second-half points, in which, the team rallied from an 11-point deficit with 17:27 to play. Nowell was named the Cayman Islands Classic Tournament MVP and to the all-tournament team, while Johnson was selected to the all-tournament team. Nowell averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 assists in the 3-game tournament, while Johnson averaged a team-best 19.3 points on 53.6 percent shooting with 6.0 rebounds per game. K-State (6-0) had to survive some nervous moments to earn the victory, as both teams called their full allotment of timeouts (2 each) before the last 4.7 seconds played out. LSU (5-1) was able to dribble up the court and seemingly tied the game at 61-all at the buzzer. However, the officials reviewed the play and waved the shot off after they discovered that the clock didn't start on time and the shot came after the game clock had expired. It was a tale of two halves for the Tigers, who looked like the more rested team after playing in the early sessions in the first 2 days and breezing past their first 2 opponents by 16 and 15 points, respectively. LSU scored 41 points in the first half on 47.1 percent (16-of-34), including 50 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point range, with just 3 turnovers, to build as much as a 12-point advantage right before halftime. Things changed in the second half, as the Tigers managed just 18 points on 36.8 percent (7-of-19) shooting, including 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from long range, to go with 14 turnovers. K-State took a season-high 6 charges on the night. Down 11 points with 17:27 remaining, the Wildcats slowly chipped away at the deficit, as they got contributions from multiple players but most notably from Sills, who scored 7 points in a game-changing 15-3 run. A Sills layup and dunk by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/cam-carter/9658">Cam Carter</a>&nbsp;got the team to with 49-45 to force a timeout by LSU head coach&nbsp;Matt McMahon&nbsp;with just under 10 minutes to play. The run continued with a 3-point play from Sills before Carter gave K-State its first lead since the opening moments of the first half at 50-49 with 7:47 remaining. Nowell followed with a layup for a 52-49 edge, but LSU regained the lead on a pair of free throws and a jumper by&nbsp;Trae Hannibal. The teams went back and forth over the next few possessions before layups by&nbsp;KJ Williams&nbsp;and&nbsp;Adam Miller&nbsp;gave the Tigers a 59-57 advantage with 1:15 to play. Carter also proved vital in the victory, snagging a career-high 7 rebounds – all on the defensive end – while posting 6 points, 1 assist and 1 steal in nearly 25 minutes. The Wildcats connected a 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-11 victory over the Red Raiders on Senior Night. Elena Baka, one of two seniors for K-State (15-13, 6-9 Big 12), posted a career-high 23 kills and added 13 digs for her tenth double-double performance of the season. The outside hitter collected an ace and seven blocks to end the night with 28 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/loren-hinkle/8073">Loren Hinkle</a>&nbsp;also inked a double-double, her seventh on the season, with 50 assists and 13 digs. On the difference in the match… "We were good from the service line and disruptive defensively to stretch the lead. We were able to score points in bunches. I am happy that we came out firing in the fifth set and played our best volleyball when it mattered the most. I thought we made really good attacking decisions as well. Loren helped move the ball around. They served a lot to Elena so she would have to pass and wouldn't be able to make a kill. She did both tonight. Elena does a lot of things at a high level and is well-rounded player. Her ball control is great and she keeps us in system." We put in the work every single day and it feels good when it all pays off. HOW IT HAPPENED Set One – K-State 25, Texas Tech 21 Texas Tech put together a four-point run to take the lead at 8-7 until K-State's three-point spurt cut the train. Hinkle tagged an ace to finish the run. The Wildcats took a short four-point lead as Fernholz collected a back-to-back block and kill combo. TTU responded with an 8-3 stunt to take the lead at 19-18. Kanas collected two kills and a block assist. K-State took the 25-21 win on a 5-1 roll at the end, fueled by Warner's kill and block assist. Kanas tallied four of the Red Raiders' 14 kills (.189) and Sauer donned seven digs. The Cats posted 16 kills at a .364 efficiency, as Carter and Baka tallied five kills each. Hinkle collected 14 assists. Set Two – Texas Tech 25, K-State 18 K-State held the lead up to a 7-4 score when Texas Tech used a five-point spurt to take over. O'Brien grabbed two kills. Another 6-1 run helped the visitors build the lead by five. Carter's two kills tried to push the Cats back, but four straight Red Raider points pushed the team away 19-13. K-State did not have any aces and only one team block. Set Three – Texas Tech 25, K-State 23 The third set was anyone's to grab with 17 tie scores and 10 lead changes. The two teams were neck-in-neck until Rhodes' back-to-back aces gave the Red Raiders a one-point advantage. K-State came back with three points of its own on Bolding's kill and block. The game stayed within two points up until Texas Tech found four straight points on three Wildcat hitting errors. The Cats fought back to tie the set at 23-23 but more errors turned the favor to TTU taking the 25-23 win. Sauer led with four kills as Texas Tech combined for ten total slams at a .023 clip. Rhodes notched two aces as Correa collected nine digs. K-State gathered 11 kills with Carter leading at four kills and an ace. Hinkle also posted an ace, along with ten assists and five digs. 🏀 Dick Leads No. 3 Kansas to 80-74 Victory Against NC State

The Texas Rangers hired Mike Maddux as their new pitching coach 
Wednesday, and added former Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton 
Moore as a senior adviser in their baseball operations department.

Maddux
 is returning to Texas to be on new manager Bruce Bochy's staff. Maddux 
was first the pitching coach for the Rangers from 2009-15, a span in 
which they made their only two World Series appearances. He spent the 
past five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, and has been part of 11 
playoffs teams over his past 15 seasons as a pitching coach.

Moore
 spent the past 16 years with the Royals, where he was named GM in May 
2006 and also served as president of baseball operations before getting 
fired in September. The Royals had three consecutive 100-loss seasons 
before Moore's arrival. They won back-to-back American League pennants 
in 2014 and 2015, beating the New York Mets for the World Series title 
after the second one.

Moore will collaborate with Rangers general 
manager Chris Young, the former pitcher who finished his big league 
playing career with the Royals from 2015-17.

“There is no one more
 respected in our game. He rebuilt the Royals into a world champion,” 
Young said. “Dayton’s experiences as a longtime general manager, as well
 as his extensive background in scouting, will be a tremendous asset to 
me and the other leaders of our baseball group.”

Before joining 
the Royals, Moore spent 13 seasons with the Atlanta Braves in scouting 
and player development roles before becoming their director of player 
personnel in 2002.

Maddux was the second-longest tenured pitching 
coach in club history when he left the Rangers after the 2015 season and
 spent the following two years with Washington. Texas had four 
consecutive seasons with team ERAs under 4.00 from 2010-13. Before his 
arrival, they hadn't had a team ERA under 4.00 since 1990, and haven't 
had one since Maddux left.

After 15 seasons pitching in the big leagues, Maddux began his MLB coaching career with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2003-08.

🏀 KU's Gradey Dick named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas and coach Lance Leipold have agreed to their second contract extension in less than three months, this time adding two years to his deal and keeping him tied to the Jayhawks through the 2029 season, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the school had not announced the extension.

Leipold had a year added to his original contract on Sept. 1 as a reward for a two-win first season that raised hopes around Lawrence that the football program might return to relevance. But after a 5-0 start had the Jayhawks ranked in the AP Top 25, and a sixth win made them bowl-eligible, the school aggressively moved to lock up Leipold well into the future — especially with Nebraska and Wisconsin, where he has deep connections, in the market for coaches.

Leipold’s original contract was a $16.5 million, six-year pact that paid him $2.2 million in its initial season with $200,000 increases each year. He also would earn $50,000 for finishing in the Top 25, earning Big 12 coach of the year or winning seven regular-season games, a threshold he can clear with a win Saturday over rival Kansas State.

He's already earned a $100,000 bonus for qualifying for a bowl and can earn another $75,000 for academic benchmarks.

Leipold was hired early last year, shortly after the Jayhawks parted with Les Miles amid sexual harassment allegations from his time at LSU. The scandal led to the ouster of Jeff Long, his longtime friend and the athletic director who hired him.

Kansas eventually gave the AD job to Travis Goff, and his first major move was to pluck Leipold — who won six Division III titles at Wisconsin-Whitewater — from Buffalo, which he had taken to three straight bowl games.

Leipold was a popular pick among Jayhawks fans because of his Midwest pedigree, small-town roots and success in building programs, and his old-school demeanor on the field fit seamlessly with the values of the school.

Despite having no offseason or time to put together a full recruiting class, Leipold managed to lead the Jayhawks to an upset of Texas late last season, and then carried the momentum right into this year. They ripped off five consecutive wins before losing quarterback Jalon Daniels to a shoulder injury, then toppled Oklahoma State with backup Jason Bean under center to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since the 2008 season.

On Saturday, they will try to snap a 13-game losing streak to Kansas State in their regular-season finale.

PRATT, Kan. — After suffering its first loss of the season and being held to just 75 points at Cloud County Saturday, No. 9 Hutchinson got back to its scoring ways on the road at Pratt.

Aaron Franklin scored 34 and Ty Frierson got hot in the second half to post a career-high 29 as Hutchinson (8-1, 2-1) squeaked by the Beavers (4-4, 1-2).

The Beavers stayed in the contest behind Quintin Metcalf's 49 points. Metcalf's 49 ties the most ever scored against the Dragons in school history, tying an Ark City (now Cowley) record set in 1958.

The Dragon defense has now allowed an opponent to shoot 60-plus percent in four consecutive halves. The Beavers finished 63.2% from the field.

The Dragons then built a 10-point lead with 6:10 remaining. That lead expanded to 11, but dissipated less than three minutes later as the Beavers went on a 13-3 run.

A couple of reverse layups later and the Dragons got some breathing room in the final two minutes.

Franklin scored on a cut to the basket with 1:40 left to give Hutchinson the 115-112 lead. Frierson then scored an acrobatic reverse layup to extend the lead to five.

Chidi Obichere scored an And-1 with 19.8 seconds left, but failed to hit the free throw.

The Beavers went into foul mode and sent Frierson to the line twice in the final 12 seconds. He went 3 of 4 and put the Dragons up by four with four seconds remaining.

Obichere took the final outlet of the game down the middle of the floor and slammed the ball through the hoop as time expired.

PRATT, Kan. — The Blue Dragons (8-1, 2-1) bounced back in a big way against the Beavers (6-2, 1-2).

Hutchinson had not lost back-to-back games since the 2017-2018 campaign entering the Beaver Dome Tuesday night and coming off a road loss at Cloud County last Saturday.

The Blue Dragons struggled from the field early, making only 6 of 21 shots in the first quarter. Before going cold, Hutchinson hit three of its first five attempts.

Hutchinson made just six field goals in each of the first three quarters.

Pratt hit 7 of 15 to start the game and led Hutchinson 18-14 after one quarter.

The Dragons managed an eight-point lead by the break and started to pull away in the third quarter behind Morgan Browning's 19 points. After missing her only attempt of the first half, Browning scored all 19, including 3 of 3 from distance, in the second half.

Mya Williams finished with 15 after leading Hutchinson with 11 at the break.

Kali Howard and Monae Duffy each registered a double-double.

Howard posted 13 points and 13 boards while Duffy had 12 and 14, respectively.

Princess Anderson led the Beavers with 21 points. She shot just 3 of 14 from the field, but made 13 of 16 free throws.

Hutchinson scored 38 points in the paint and 22 points off 18 turnovers.

Walton and Okafor hit back-to-back threes to key a 10-0 run over a span of less than two minutes. After driving for a layup, Porter stole a pass near midcourt and fed Walton for a dunk to cut the deficit to 60-57 with still 3:20 to go. The Shockers twice missed three-pointers that would have tied the game. USF's Kunen sank his fifth triple of the day with 1:27 to go to push the Don lead back to 63-57. Again WSU responded. Okafor put back a missed free throw with just a under a minute left to make it a two-point game, 63-61. Following a defensive stop, the Shockers took possession with 32 seconds remaining but turned it over when a driving Walton lost his footing and the ball. USF iced the game at the free throw line.

The official pairings for the NJCAA Division I Football National Semifinals have been released and one of the matchups will be an all-Jayhawk Conference showdown at Gowans Stadium.

The No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Hutchinson Community College Football team will play host to the No. 4 Coffeyville Red Ravens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 at Gowans Stadium in the first of two national semifinal games.

The other semifinal has No. 3 Iowa Western traveling to No. 2 Northwest Mississippi at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 4 in Senatobia, Mississippi.

The semifinal winners will meet in the NJCAA Division I National Championship Game on Wednesday, December 14 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Advanced ticket sales are already underway online. Tickets for the Hutchinson-Coffeyville semifinal are $15 advanced and $18 at the gate. All seating in Gowans Stadium will be general admission for this game. Blue Dragon All-Sports Tickets are not valid for the national semifinals. Both national semifinals will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Blue Dragons navigated a tough 2022 schedule as the only undefeated team in the NJCAA this season, winning the program's 10th Jayhawk Conference title and third in a row.

On the way to that league title, the Blue Dragons and Red Ravens met on September 24 in Coffeyville. The Blue Dragons won the defensive struggle 14-9 over the Red Ravens.

Running back&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kedzior_dylan_601l">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;came off the bench in the second half against Coffeyville and ignited the Blue Dragon offense. Kedzior rushed for 85 yards in the fourth quarter, including a 21-yard run that set up his 3-yard go-ahead touchdown with 1:17 remaining in regulation.

The Blue Dragons are making their second national playoff appearance in the last three seasons. The Blue Dragons ran the table two seasons ago, defeating Snow College 29-27 in the first national championship played in Little Rock on June 5, 2020.

The semifinal round was installed before last season and the Dragons were No. 5 in the final regular-season rankings, just one spot out of the playoffs. After a decisive win over Hinds in the Salt City bowl, the Blue Dragons finished No. 3 in the national rankings.

The Dragons have now reeled off 16-straight wins, the second-longest win streak in program history.

After starting this season 2-2, Coffeyville has reeled off six-straight wins to steadily climb up the NJCAA National Rankings. The Ravens moved into the No. 4 spot in the poll after a convincing final two weeks of the regular season – a 23-7 home when over previous No. 2 Iowa Western and a 30-21 road triumph at Garden City.

This semifinal will feature the two Jayhawk Conference Players of the Year in Hutchinson's Kedzior – the league's 2022 Offensive Player of the Year – at Coffeyville's Bishop Fitzgerald, the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Also, the last two league coaches of the year – Hutchinson's Drew Dallas (2022) and Coffeyville's Jeff Leiker (2021) will be on the sidelines. Blue Dragon quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;was also a finalist for the Walter Jones Player of the Year award.

The national semifinal appearance will be the 25th NJCAA postseason game in Blue Dragon Football history. The Dragons have played in 23 bowl games previously and now two national playoff appearances.

This will be the third postseason meeting between Hutchinson and Coffeyville that didn't involve the Jayhawk Conference/Region VI playoffs. The teams played in back-to-back Wheat Bowls in Wichita in 1948 and 1949. Coffeyville won the 1948 Wheat Bowl, 19-7. The teams tied 13-13 in 1948.

Hutchinson is 3-5 in eight KJCCC Playoff meetings with Coffeyville, going 3-0 at Gowans Stadium.

The most memorable of those three playoff meetings came in 1995 when the Blue Dragons, trailing 10-3 in the fourth quarter, ran a fake punt from their own 17 and converted on fourth-and-long. That successful fake ultimately led to a game-tying touchdown with 3 minutes left in regulation. The Blue Dragons won 17-16 in overtime when Coffeyville missed the potential game-tying extra-point try in the first overtime.

AL RAYYAN, Qatar (AP) — A young United States team was nearing victory in its World Cup return. Then Walker Zimmerman needlessly plowed into Gareth Bale.

Bale converted the resulting penalty kick in the 82nd minute, giving Wales a 1-1 draw Monday night that left the Americans feeling frustrated and made their path to the knockout stage more precarious.

"You feel like you have the game and you're going to win the game," midfielder Brenden Aaronson said. "It's a punch in the face."

Tim Weah put the Americans ahead in the 36th minute off a pass from Christian Pulisic, scoring in front a crowd that included his father, former FIFA Player of the Year and current Liberia President George Weah.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the United States had only to close out the final minutes. But Brennan Johnson made a throw-in that Aaron Ramsey cut back to Bale, who had his back to the goal near the penalty spot. Zimmerman's sliding tackle took out Bale's left leg, and Qatari referee Abdulrahman Al-Jassim pointed to the penalty spot.
