MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;-&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/will-howard/7941">Will Howard</a>&nbsp;threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/deuce-vaughn/7993">Deuce Vaughn</a>&nbsp;rushed for 147 yards and one score as No. 12 Kansas State punched its ticket to the Big 12 Championship Game with a 47-27 victory over Kansas that gave the Wildcats their 14th&nbsp;consecutive win in the Dillions Sunflower Showdown. Amid persistent rain and mist, K-State, 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12, relied upon its passing game during the first half and then rode Vaughn and its powerful offensive line to the finish line in front of 51,861 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "When you come to K-State, you don't lose to the Jayhawks," said Howard, who hit tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/sammy-wheeler/7996">Sammy Wheeler</a>&nbsp;with a 42-yard score in the first quarter and added a 14-yard scoring toss to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/phillip-brooks/7910">Phillip Brooks</a>&nbsp;in the second quarter as the Wildcats built a 30-21 halftime lead. "We knew what was on the line," Howard continued, "and we know what we have ahead of us." K-State will now face TCU in the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday, December 3 at 11 a.m. at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. "People doubted these guys all season long and doubted our guys in that locker room," K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1637">Chris Klieman</a>&nbsp;said. "Not many people thought we'd be in the position that we're in. The guys downstairs did. This is a total body of work. That's not just this football game. It's a total body of work. These guys believed in each other and in the plan and they took ownership in their program. "We rose up when people doubted those guys down there." K-State's only losses this season have been to teams currently ranked in the College Football Playoff Top 25. The Wildcats have essentially otherwise rolled. "All the hard work and everything we've done for these past 11 months, we came together every single day," Vaughn said. "We did it all for one common goal and we've gotten to that point. We understand that we have a lot more work to do, but all that preparation and hard work we've poured into this season has come to fruition. "Now we're exactly where we want to be." K-State won the 2012 Big 12 title but will play in its first Big 12 title game since 2003. The Wildcats could've clinched a spot in the 2022 league title game if Texas had lost to Baylor on Friday. With Texas' win, the Wildcats had to beat the Jayhawks in order to face the Horned Frogs. "We didn't want to back in by having Texas lose yesterday," Klieman said. "We needed to earn this, and guys needed to earn this. We're smart enough to realize there was a lot of pressure on us as a coaching staff and as players to finish this deal. We had one more chapter in the regular season. "They finished the chapter the right way and earned the opportunity." Although K-State led by nine points at halftime, the margin seemed smaller. Second-year Kansas head coach Lance Leipold has the Jayhawks playing their best football in more than a decade and they wouldn't go down easily. However, K-State outscored Kansas, 17-6, over the final two quarters, then celebrated with the Governor's Cup trophy presentation in the locker room. We were running the ball. It was pretty special." Kansas, which entered the final game of the regular season with a winning record for the first time since 2008, also entered as one of six teams in the nation with 2,500 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 2,200 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. K-State limited the Jayhawks to one scoring drive in the second half — an 8-play, 75-yard jaunt that took 8 minutes, 20 seconds and resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jalon Daniels to cut the Wildcats' lead to 37-27 with 13:29 left in the fourth quarter. But the Jayhawks failed to capitalize on their momentum and misfired on their two-point conversion. "Some games coaches need to rile you up a little bit, but none of that was needed tonight," Howard said. "We were all fired up ready to go. It was Senior Night. There was no outside external pump-up that anybody needed. We were locked in, and we knew what we needed to do. We knew it would be a battle. That was a good KU team. "We were the better team, and we knew what we needed to do to win." K-State and Kansas combined for 51 points and 481 total yards in the first half, as the Wildcats led 31-20 heading into the locker room. K-State opened the scoring when Kansas muffed a punt and the Wildcats recovered, setting up Knowles for a 5-yard touchdown. However, Kansas responded, going 75 yards in nine plays, as Torry Locklin raced 12 yards into the end zone to tie it at 7-7. The Wildcats had several exciting plays in the first half, the first of which came when Howard demonstrated his recognition and patience in finding wide-open Wheeler for a 42-yard touchdown. Moments later, and pinned deep in its own territory, Kansas right tackle Bryce Cabeldue was called for holding in the end zone for a safety and the Wildcats led 16-7. The Wildcats drove again, and Knowles raced four yards for another touchdown and a 23-7 lead. "Malik is so good to have on your team. When you can hand the ball to him and he can make a big play and you can throw it to him and he can make a big play — he's unguardible," Howard said. "He can't be guarded. He's been playing like that all year. He's a huge asset to have as a quarterback." Kansas muffed a punt, was penalized for 12 men on the field, had blown coverage on a 42-yard reception, was penalized for a block in the back on a kickoff return, and was penalized for holding in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter alone. However, the Jayhawks were methodical on offense and scored all three of their first-half touchdowns on 75-yard drives. That included when Devin Neal finished off an 11-play jaunt with an 11-yard score to cut the deficit to 23-14. K-State answered again. This time Howard threw a short pass to Vaughn, who made two defenders miss and dashed 80 yards to get up a 14-yard touchdown catch by Brooks — a five-play, 92-yard drive that consumed just 2:42. K-State led, 30-14. Twice K-State led by 16 points in the first half and both times the Jayhawks responded to cut it to single digits. Amid persistent rain and mist, K-State, 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12, relied upon its passing game during the first half and then rode Vaughn and its powerful offensive line to the finish line in front of 51,861 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "When you come to K-State, you don't lose to the Jayhawks," said Howard, who hit tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/sammy-wheeler/7996">Sammy Wheeler</a>&nbsp;with a 42-yard score in the first quarter and added a 14-yard scoring toss to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/phillip-brooks/7910">Phillip Brooks</a>&nbsp;in the second quarter as the Wildcats built a 30-21 halftime lead. "We knew what was on the line," Howard continued, "and we know what we have ahead of us." K-State will now face TCU in the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday, December 3 at 11 a.m. at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. "People doubted these guys all season long and doubted our guys in that locker room," K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1637">Chris Klieman</a>&nbsp;said. "Not many people thought we'd be in the position that we're in. The guys downstairs did. This is a total body of work. That's not just this football game. It's a total body of work. These guys believed in each other and in the plan and they took ownership in their program. "We rose up when people doubted those guys down there." K-State's only losses this season have been to teams currently ranked in the College Football Playoff Top 25. The Wildcats have essentially otherwise rolled. "All the hard work and everything we've done for these past 11 months, we came together every single day," Vaughn said. "We did it all for one common goal and we've gotten to that point. We understand that we have a lot more work to do, but all that preparation and hard work we've poured into this season has come to fruition. "Now we're exactly where we want to be." K-State won the 2012 Big 12 title but will play in its first Big 12 title game since 2003. The Wildcats could've clinched a spot in the 2022 league title game if Texas had lost to Baylor on Friday. With Texas' win, the Wildcats had to beat the Jayhawks in order to face the Horned Frogs. "We didn't want to back in by having Texas lose yesterday," Klieman said. "We needed to earn this, and guys needed to earn this. We're smart enough to realize there was a lot of pressure on us as a coaching staff and as players to finish this deal. We had one more chapter in the regular season. "They finished the chapter the right way and earned the opportunity." Although K-State led by nine points at halftime, the margin seemed smaller. Second-year Kansas head coach Lance Leipold has the Jayhawks playing their best football in more than a decade and they wouldn't go down easily. However, K-State outscored Kansas, 17-6, over the final two quarters, then celebrated with the Governor's Cup trophy presentation in the locker room. "It's huge," linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/austin-moore/7964">Austin Moore</a>&nbsp;said. "Just beating KU is huge and now we know we can talk about what we have coming up with the Big 12 Championship. It means a whole lot." Howard was 11-of-18 for 213 yards and two touchdowns in the opening two quarters. Then Vaughn had 17 carries for 94 yards and one touchdown in the second half, as the Wildcats bellied up and drove the ball down the field. K-State outgained Kansas 443-307 behind a balanced attack —&nbsp;the Wildcats had 230 rushing yards and 213 passing. "It was fun," offensive lineman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/hadley-panzer/8002">Hadley Panzer</a>&nbsp;said. "There for a little bit, I'd look at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/hayden-gillum/7930">Hayden Gillum</a>&nbsp;and we yelled just because we were so fired up. We were running the ball. It was pretty special." Kansas, which entered the final game of the regular season with a winning record for the first time since 2008, also entered as one of six teams in the nation with 2,500 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 2,200 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. K-State limited the Jayhawks to one scoring drive in the second half — an 8-play, 75-yard jaunt that took 8 minutes, 20 seconds and resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jalon Daniels to cut the Wildcats' lead to 37-27 with 13:29 left in the fourth quarter. But the Jayhawks failed to capitalize on their momentum and misfired on their two-point conversion. Moments later,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/ty-zentner/8000">Ty Zentner</a>&nbsp;connected on a 27-yard field goal for a 40-27 lead before the Wildcats pounded the ball on the ground 85 yards on eight plays, capped by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/dj-giddens/8112">DJ Giddens'</a>&nbsp;five-yard run into the end zone with 4:30 remaining. All that remained was the K-State Marching Band playing "Happy Trails." "I kind of reflected during the week and I tried not to spend too much time getting emotional, but it was awesome," said Zentner, who also booted a career-long 72-yard punt. "I ended up here, the greatest place on earth." Bill Snyder Family Stadium certainly seemed like the happiest place on earth late Saturday. "Some games coaches need to rile you up a little bit, but none of that was needed tonight," Howard said. "We were all fired up ready to go. It was Senior Night. There was no outside external pump-up that anybody needed. We were locked in, and we knew what we needed to do. We knew it would be a battle. That was a good KU team. "We were the better team, and we knew what we needed to do to win." K-State and Kansas combined for 51 points and 481 total yards in the first half, as the Wildcats led 31-20 heading into the locker room. K-State opened the scoring when Kansas muffed a punt and the Wildcats recovered, setting up Knowles for a 5-yard touchdown. However, Kansas responded, going 75 yards in nine plays, as Torry Locklin raced 12 yards into the end zone to tie it at 7-7. The Wildcats had several exciting plays in the first half, the first of which came when Howard demonstrated his recognition and patience in finding wide-open Wheeler for a 42-yard touchdown. Moments later, and pinned deep in its own territory, Kansas right tackle Bryce Cabeldue was called for holding in the end zone for a safety and the Wildcats led 16-7. The Wildcats drove again, and Knowles raced four yards for another touchdown and a 23-7 lead. "Malik is so good to have on your team. When you can hand the ball to him and he can make a big play and you can throw it to him and he can make a big play — he's unguardible," Howard said. "He can't be guarded. He's been playing like that all year. He's a huge asset to have as a quarterback." Kansas muffed a punt, was penalized for 12 men on the field, had blown coverage on a 42-yard reception, was penalized for a block in the back on a kickoff return, and was penalized for holding in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter alone. However, the Jayhawks were methodical on offense and scored all three of their first-half touchdowns on 75-yard drives. That included when Devin Neal finished off an 11-play jaunt with an 11-yard score to cut the deficit to 23-14. K-State answered again. This time Howard threw a short pass to Vaughn, who made two defenders miss and dashed 80 yards to get up a 14-yard touchdown catch by Brooks — a five-play, 92-yard drive that consumed just 2:42. K-State led, 30-14. Twice K-State led by 16 points in the first half and both times the Jayhawks responded to cut it to single digits. Kansas simply couldn't keep up with a team that spent the season proving doubters wrong, and now the Wildcats have a date against TCU to battle for the Big 12 trophy. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The last time the Dragons were held to 75 points, they lost.

That 90-75 defeat came at Cloud County just two games ago.

Saturday night in the Sports Arena, No. 9 Hutchinson (8-2, 2-2) found itself down by five after leading the contest by eight.

An And-1 on a three-ball from Jackson Leyba put Hutchinson up 44-42 at halftime.

The second half belonged to No. 21 Barton (7-2, 2-1).

The Cougars got a big night from big man Joseph Locandro. He scored 21 of his total 30 points in the first half. Locandro posted a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Three other Cougars scored in double figures (Cougar Downing 24, Hannes Saar 11, Cooper Jackson 11).

Saar also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Powered by 48 paint points and 18 fast break points, Barton opened its lead to 26 as Hutchinson went on a 2:16 drought.

Hutchinson has scored just 75 twice this season and lost both times.

The Dragons are 8-0 when scoring 99-plus points.

Led by Aaron Franklin's 17, four Dragons scored in double digits.

Hutchinson shot just 66 times, its lowest attempt total of the season (averaging nearly 95 attempts in eight wins).

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kali Howard scored 10 of her 16 total points in the fourth quarter as No. 12 Hutchinson erased a 12-point Barton lead in the second half Saturday night in the Sports Arena.

No. 15 Barton led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter.

Trailing by 10 at the break and by five to start the fourth quarter, Hutchinson (9-1, 3-1) tied the game at 38 with 8:10 to play.

Back-to-back Howard baskets put Hutchinson up by one as the teams went back-and-forth for the next five minutes.

With 2:27 left, Hutchinson's Mya Williams fouled out of the contest with just seven points. It is only the fourth time in her career that she has finished a game in single digits.

A Howard free throw and ensuing three-pointer put Hutchinson up four with 1:35 to play.

The Dragons extended that lead with 27 seconds left on a Morgan Browning basket.

Mikaela Hall scored an And-1 with 18 seconds to play and pulled Barton (8-1, 2-1) within three.

Browning was then fouled and hit both free throw opportunities.

Barton took a 10-point lead into halftime thanks to 10 points from Morgan Meyers.

Howard finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, including a perfect 4 of 4 shooting in the fourth quarter.

Browning was the only other Dragon to score in double digits (11).

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Andale Indians came in to Saturday's Class 3A state championship game having won 50 straight games and had won every game this season by at least 30 points.

They didn't quite meet the 30 point mark, but the most important number was their defense putting up a zero in a 28-0 win Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

The backbreaker actually turned out to be the game's first drive, where Andale converted on 4th and goal with a 16 yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Spexarth to Riley Marx. After the two point conversion, it was 8-0.

Andale added to their total with a Spexarth one-yard plunge at 6:02 before halftime and then further extended the lead with a Cody Parthemer one-yard run with twenty-six seconds left in the half. Add on the Marlo Sullivan extra points after each and it was 22-0 Indians at the break. Owen Eck added a final score with 51 seconds left in the game to give the 28-0 final.

The Andale formula is tough defense and turnovers and that was the recipe on Saturday, as they held Holton to just six first downs and 161 yards of offense and forced two fumbles and got an interception and won the turnover battle three to one, as Holton could not take advantage of an early Indian fumble when the game was still in doubt.

Andale ends its season at 13-0. Holton ends its season at 11-2.

Tipoff for the Thanksgiving Weekend showdown is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Blue Dragons lead the KJCCC in offensive scoring average at 113.3 points per game. That average was helped out a bit by a 120-118 road victory on Tuesday at Pratt. Barton is second in the Jayhawk in scoring average at 92.1 points per game. 

The Cougars were stunned at home on Tuesday as Cowley held them more than 30 points under their scoring average in a 66-60 win over Barton in Great Bend.

Saturday’s game also features two of the Top 10 individual scoring leaders in the KJCCC in Hutchinson’s Aaron Franklin and Barton’s Joseph Locandro. Coming off his third 30-point game of the season - 34 points against Pratt on Tuesday - the Blue Dragons’ Franklin is leading the Jayhawk Conference in scoring at 25.7 points per game. Locandro is 10th in the Jayhawk in scoring at 17.8 points per game.

The Blue Dragons play their only home game in a 18-day stretch that covers five games. Hutchinson is 1-1 to start the five-game span with a 90-75 loss last Saturday at Cloud County and Tuesday’s win over Pratt. Next week the Blue Dragons travel to Cowley on Wednesday and to Butler next Saturday before returning home to play No. 6 Coffeyville on December 7. Saturday’s Hutchinson-Barton matchup is the 121st time the teams will play since the series began in 1970. The Blue Dragons lead the overall series 91-29, including 45-9 at the Sports Arena. Wichita State (4-1) won its third straight game and second straight facing a double digit deficit in the second half. It marked the second overtime contest of the season through the first five games for the Shockers. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jane-asinde/7152">Jane Asinde</a>&nbsp;was dominant for Wichita State, finishing with 20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. 🏈 KSHSAA State Championship Schedule for Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas&nbsp;– The Kansas Jayhawks dropped their final regular season match of the season on Friday afternoon at the United Supermarkets Arena, falling to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23).

Texas Tech closes out the season with a 16-13 (5-11 Big 12) mark while Kansas finishes the regular season 18-10 (8-8 Big 12) with an eye now on the NCAA Tournament.

Graduate transfer Lauren Dooley led the Kansas offense with seven kills, hitting .636. Super-senior Anezka Szabo had six kills.

Freshman Katie Dalton tallied 17 digs, while junior Kennedy Farris had nine. Super-senior Rachel Langs recorded three total blocks.

Szabo began the first set with a kill to take an early lead 1-0. The Red Raiders were able to come back and take the score from the Jayhawks after a 4-0 run, 4-1. Szabo was able to halt Texas Tech’s run to bring the ball back to Kansas at 5-2.

Langs brought Kansas within two after tallying a kill of her own, making it 6-4. The Red Raiders continued the momentum with a 3-0 run before Langs shut down Texas Tech’s defense with another kill, which made the score 9-5.

Szabo tipped the ball past Texas Tech for a Kansas kill, making it 12-10. At the media timeout, Texas Tech led the way 15-10.

Texas Tech was able to pull away following a 7-1 run, and increased its lead to 19-11. An error by the Red Raiders brought the ball back to KU’s side at 19-12. Redshirt freshman Bryn McGehe had Kansas’ first ace of the match getting the Jayhawks within six at 19-13.

In the end, Texas Tech claimed set one 25-15.

TTU kicked off set two with an advantage 2-0. A kill by sophomore Caroline Bien and a block solo by Langs tied up set two at three apiece. An attack error by Texas Tech was challenged by the Red Raiders, but remained with Kansas at 4-3.

Back-to-back KU blocks allowed the Jayhawks to continue the lead 6-4. TTU was able to go on a 5-0 run to regain the lead 11-8 before Kansas called for a timeout. Dooley had her second kill of the match to stop Texas Tech from continuing the scoring run and making the score 12-9.

The scoring runs remained for the Red Raiders as Texas Tech went on a 5-1 run to advance to 17-10. A service error by TTU brought the Jayhawks to 18-11 with Dalton serving. A surprise kill by sophomore Camryn Turner kept Kansas in the game, 18-12.

Sophomore London Davis pushed a kill down the line for Kansas to slowly close the gap, 18-13, putting KU on a 3-0 run.

TTU kept the lead at 22-13. An attack error allowed for Kansas to serve again at 22-14. Shortly after, the Red Raiders closed out set two 25-16.

Set Three took off with a kill by Dooley, making it 1-0. TTU was able to respond with a kill of their own, 1-1.

The Red Raiders had the lead, but excellent communication by the Jayhawk offense allowed for Szabo to tie the score 2-2. Back-to-back errors by Kansas gave Texas Tech the lead, 4-3. It wasn’t until kills by both Langs and Turner tied up set three 5-5.

Dooley took a swing and recorded a kill to tie Kansas 8-8 with the Red Raiders. It didn’t take long to TTU to pull away from the Jayhawks at 12-9, forcing a timeout by KU.

Szabo earned another kill to put Kansas at 13-10 with Texas Tech. An attack error by TTU and a kill by Dooley and Bien allowed Kansas to advance to within one point, 15-14.

Three errors in a row by Texas Tech tied the score at 17 all. Dooley and freshman Rhian Swanson had a kill apiece while Szabo tallied a block solo to tie up the match at 20, requiring Texas Tech to ask for a timeout.

An ace by junior libero Kennedy Farris put KU ahead 22-21. TTU tied the score again, but a bad set allowed Kansas to lead 23-22.

The lead was short lived as the Texas Tech Red Raiders were victorious 25-23.

The Selection Show for the 2022 NCAA Tournament is Sunday, November 27 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The show will be broadcast on ESPNU. First and second round games are December 1-2 or 2-3. Regional games are December 8 and 10 followed by semifinals on December 15. The national championship match is December 17 and will be televised on ESPNU.

Super-senior Anezka Szabo had six kills.Freshman Katie Dalton tallied 17 digs, while junior Kennedy Farris had nine. Super-senior Rachel Langs recorded three total blocks.Set OneSzabo began the first set with a kill to take an early lead 1-0. The Red Raiders were able to come back and take the score from the Jayhawks after a 4-0 run, 4-1. Redshirt freshman Bryn McGehe had Kansas’ first ace of the match getting the Jayhawks within six at 19-13.In the end, Texas Tech claimed set one 25-15.Set TwoTTU kicked off set two with an advantage 2-0. A kill by sophomore Caroline Bien and a block solo by Langs tied up set two at three apiece. An attack error by Texas Tech was challenged by the Red Raiders, but remained with Kansas at 4-3.Back-to-back KU blocks allowed the Jayhawks to continue the lead 6-4. TTU was able to go on a 5-0 run to regain the lead 11-8 before Kansas called for a timeout. Dooley had her second kill of the match to stop Texas Tech from continuing the scoring run and making the score 12-9.The scoring runs remained for the Red Raiders as Texas Tech went on a 5-1 run to advance to 17-10. A service error by TTU brought the Jayhawks to 18-11 with Dalton serving. A surprise kill by sophomore Camryn Turner kept Kansas in the game, 18-12.Sophomore London Davis pushed a kill down the line for Kansas to slowly close the gap, 18-13, putting KU on a 3-0 run.TTU kept the lead at 22-13. An attack error allowed for Kansas to serve again at 22-14. Shortly after, the Red Raiders closed out set two 25-16.Set ThreeSet Three took off with a kill by Dooley, making it 1-0. TTU was able to respond with a kill of their own, 1-1.The Red Raiders had the lead, but excellent communication by the Jayhawk offense allowed for Szabo to tie the score 2-2. It wasn’t until kills by both Langs and Turner tied up set three 5-5.Dooley took a swing and recorded a kill to tie Kansas 8-8 with the Red Raiders. It didn’t take long to TTU to pull away from the Jayhawks at 12-9, forcing a timeout by KU.Szabo earned another kill to put Kansas at 13-10 with Texas Tech. An attack error by TTU and a kill by Dooley and Bien allowed Kansas to advance to within one point, 15-14.Three errors in a row by Texas Tech tied the score at 17 all. Dooley and freshman Rhian Swanson had a kill apiece while Szabo tallied a block solo to tie up the match at 20, requiring Texas Tech to ask for a timeout.An ace by junior libero Kennedy Farris put KU ahead 22-21. MORAGA, Calif. –&nbsp;On the day where she scored her 1,000th career point, senior guard Zakiyah Franklin produced a season-best 21 points to pace the Kansas Women’s Basketball team in a decisive, 76-49 victory over Maine in the opening game of the Saint Mary’s Thanksgiving Classic.

Franklin, who became the 31st player in program history to score 1,000 points as a Jayhawk, reached the milestone late in the first quarter with a three-pointer from the left corner. She didn’t stop there, however, as she went on to hit 10-of-16 field goal attempts for her eighth career game with 20 or more points.

"I thought our first group got us off to a good start against a tough group from Maine. They do a great job with their execution and they’re going to make you play deep in the clock. The thing I was most proud of today was our defensive stamina, being able to guard an entire shot clock, and the way we responded to coaching when we made a few adjustments at halftime."

The Jayhawks scored the first nine points of the game, but still found themselves facing a 12-11 deficit midway through the first quarter. KU went on another run, this time 13-0 as the Jayhawks went on to lead 26-14 at the end of the first. Late in the quarter, Franklin connected on a three-pointer from the left corner and surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for her career at Kansas.

KU’s lead remained at least six points throughout the entire second quarter before it ballooned to 16 on a pair of occurrences. Franklin led the way with 13 points off the bench while Taiyanna Jackson had 10 points and six rebounds in the first half as the Jayhawks took a 44-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Jayhawks continued pulling away in the third quarter as they outscored the Black Bears 19-8 while holding Maine to just 3-of-11 shooting from the field. Holly Kersgieter hit a three-pointer right in front of the Kansas bench on the final possession of the quarter as KU took a 63-36 lead into the final frame. The lead would reach 31 in the fourth quarter before the final margin settled at 27 after the teams each scored 13 points.

Kansas shot 50% on the day, hitting 31-of-62 field goal attempts despite struggling from long range, where they finished just 2-of-15 from three-point range. The Jayhawks outrebounded Maine 40-28 and limited the Black Bears to 35.1% (20-57) shooting, while holding a second-straight opponent under 50 points. Additionally, KU’s swarming defense forced three five-second inbound violations and one 10-second backcourt violation as part of 18 total turnovers committed by Maine.

THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands -&nbsp;(25/rv) Kansas State saw the duo of Gabby Gregory and Jaelyn Glenn combine for 58 points as the Wildcats scored a season-high 93 points on the way to its seventh straight win of the season, 93-80, over Northern Arizona in the Paradise Jam Reef Division.&nbsp; The Wildcats will have an opportunity on Saturday to win its second straight Paradise Jam title, capturing its first in 2016-17.&nbsp; K-State (7-0) has won seven straight games to begin a season for the first time since the 2016-17 season, when the Wildcats started the season with nine straight wins. This is the second time in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/jeff-mittie/1556">Jeff Mittie</a>&nbsp;era in which the Wildcats have started a season with seven consecutive wins and the seventh time in program history. "I think the last time it happened was about 12 years ago, when we were at TCU. We had a situation at Oklahoma. That one didn't turn out so well. I think we were already down 20 and we lost big I think this one obviously, it happened real early in the game in the first quarter. And while we were down, four at the end of the first quarter, we had time to settle the players down and just get them settled back into the game plan. That was the main thing to tell them 'we're gonna stick with the same game plan. We're not gonna change anything. Let's deal with the adversity. And let's keep our focus on taking away their three point shot' which we did not do a very good job in the first quarter. I think they had 12 attempts. They only had 13 attempts the rest of the game. We were successful in defending the three-point line the last three quarters and then not putting them on the free throw line. We did a pretty good job of not letting them get to the free throw line, where they could hurt us was so obviously they they took advantage and took the twos. That was something that we were kind of willing to give up and it worked out." On switching defenses during the game... "I think because we struggled that first quarter, giving up so many three-point attempts. They had such good rhythm, offensively, that we had to change and do something and by mixing that up I think it allowed us to get them off-balance. I think it just gave us a changeup because they were in such a good rhythm it took them out of rhythm and made them do something different because their man offense was pretty solid in the first quarter." On the production of Gabby Gregory and Jaelyn Glenn... "I think Gabby's reputation is to be a a dominant scorer, scoring at three levels. I think Jaelyn has matured and grown up so much and taken on greater responsibility to score and I think she's playing free. She's shooting threes and what she's doing better than we've seen since game one to game seven is getting more pressure on the basket, getting more pressure on the rim. So she's driving the ball better and being more aggressive. They're having to deal with both of them and then you throw in Brylee (Glenn) and Serena (Sundell). I think all four are close to averaging double figures, three of them certainly are close right now. If we get three out of those four, clicking on most nights, I think we got enough firepower, offensively." "I think the last time it happened was about 12 years ago, when we were at TCU. We had a situation at Oklahoma. That one didn't turn out so well. I think we were already down 20 and we lost big I think this one obviously, it happened real early in the game in the first quarter. And while we were down, four at the end of the first quarter, we had time to settle the players down and just get them settled back into the game plan. That was the main thing to tell them 'we're gonna stick with the same game plan. We're not gonna change anything. Let's deal with the adversity. And let's keep our focus on taking away their three point shot' which we did not do a very good job in the first quarter. I think they had 12 attempts. They only had 13 attempts the rest of the game. We were successful in defending the three-point line the last three quarters and then not putting them on the free throw line. We did a pretty good job of not letting them get to the free throw line, where they could hurt us was so obviously they they took advantage and took the twos. That was something that we were kind of willing to give up and it worked out." On switching defenses during the game... "I think because we struggled that first quarter, giving up so many three-point attempts. They had such good rhythm, offensively, that we had to change and do something and by mixing that up I think it allowed us to get them off-balance. I think it just gave us a changeup because they were in such a good rhythm it took them out of rhythm and made them do something different because their man offense was pretty solid in the first quarter." On the production of Gabby Gregory and Jaelyn Glenn... "I think Gabby's reputation is to be a a dominant scorer, scoring at three levels. I think Jaelyn has matured and grown up so much and taken on greater responsibility to score and I think she's playing free. She's shooting threes and what she's doing better than we've seen since game one to game seven is getting more pressure on the basket, getting more pressure on the rim. So she's driving the ball better and being more aggressive. They're having to deal with both of them and then you throw in Brylee (Glenn) and Serena (Sundell). I think all four are close to averaging double figures, three of them certainly are close right now. If we get three out of those four, clicking on most nights, I think we got enough firepower, offensively." She's coming more into her confidence, because she's always been a great basketball player and she, I think, at times just lacks the confidence that she needs to understand she's a great basketball player, and she can help on both ends of the floor. And obviously she did that today. And yesterday. She's been killing it this season. As the season goes on, she's just going to get better and better." On finishing November strong... "Every game is the most important game. I think especially tomorrow. We want to leave the island with a championship. So we're just going in tomorrow. PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) —&nbsp;Santiago Vescovi scored 20 points while No. 22 Tennessee defeated third-ranked Kansas to beat the reigning national champions 64-50 in Friday night’s championship game at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Vescovi hit five 3-pointers to drive the offense for the Volunteers (5-1), who dominated the glass, overcame their own turnover troubles and made the Jayhawks work for clean looks. The win led to a title and Vescovi being picked as the tournament’s most valuable player.

Jalen Wilson and Joseph Yesefu each scored 14 points to lead the Jayhawks (6-1), who shot 28.6% in the first half and never warmed up. They made 5 of 21 3-pointers in what was an all-around rough night, from losing starting guard Dajuan Harris to fouls with 9 minutes left to failing to keep the Vols off the glass (45-27). Wilson was named to the All-Tournament Team.

“We played a team tonight that was older and more mature and obviously played stronger and tougher,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We didn’t handle the situation near as well as what I would hope a poised team would.”

The Vols held the Jayhawks to 32.1% shooting, bothering them with size and length around the rim. And they showed the toughness to take the ball right at the Jayhawks with 5-foot-9 sophomore guard Zakai Zeigler leading the way.

Zeigler had 14 points, including a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock at the 7-minute mark to push Tennessee’s lead to 56-38. He followed with another big one from the right wing with 4:42 left after Kansas had closed within 11.

Tennessee: The Volunteers opened the tournament with a win over Butler, then grinded through an overtime win against Southern California in Thursday’s semifinals behind a big game from first-year forward Julian Phillips. But things were somehow easier on Friday, with Tennessee playing in front the entire way en route to its first title in three tries at the Atlantis resort.

Kansas: The Jayhawks didn’t have an easy first two days in the Bahamas. First came a battle to the final minutes with North Carolina State. Then came Thursday’s overtime win against Wisconsin on Bobby Pettiford Jr.’s last-second putback. But they never looked in any type of offensive flow this time, ending a 17-game winning streak dating to last year’s run to coach Bill Self’s second NCAA title.

“I feel like if we were able to get them out of place and not just have them standing there, waiting to contest a layup, that could’ve gave us some better chances at finishing at the rim,” Wilson said.

Tennessee: The Volunteers return home to host McNeese State on Wednesday.

Kansas: The Jayhawks host Texas Southern on Monday.

KSHSAA Championships for 2022

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Blue Dragon fans make their plans for the NJCAA National Semifinal football game to be held Saturday Dec. 3 at Gowans Stadium at 2 p.m., it's important to note that they will need to go through the national office to get their tickets.

"<a href="https://www.njcaa.org/tickets">The links and stuff are already up for the semifinal game</a>," Gooch said. "It's $15 advance or $18 at the gate, so you can catch a little break by purchasing your ticket ahead of time. All seating is general admission. There's no reserved seating. For those that have bought reserved seating, my recommendation is to get in line early, walk in and go sit in the seats that you normally have."

It's a matchup between two Kansas teams, so as long as the weather is good, the crowd should be good, too.

"All the money that the NJCAA makes off the semifinal games goes into a pool to offset the costs of the teams that have to travel," Gooch said. "Coffeyville, which isn't a large travel, it will help offset the cost of their travel. Iowa Western is playing NW Mississippi in the other semifinal. Iowa Western has quite a bit bigger travel. It will cost them a pretty penny to travel."

The winners of the semifinal matchups will go to Arkansas for the championship game on Wednesday, December 14.

"It's Wednesday, December 14 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas," Gooch said. "That's the same site where we won our first national championship a couple years back. We would leave early, a couple days early. I think there's a banquet tied to the game. It's an 8 p.m. kickoff. It will be on ESPNU."

Hutchinson came out on top 14-9 in their meeting with the Red Ravens in Coffeyville on Sept. 24.

🏈 Gooch: National Semifinal using NJCAA ticketing platform

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State junior running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;has been named a semifinalist for a second award this week, as the Round Rock, Texas native is one of 16 players still in the running for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

It is the third-straight season that Vaughn is a semifinalist for the award, including last year when he advanced to become one of five finalists. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award goes to the top college football player in the nation with ties to the state of Texas.

Vaughn, who on Tuesday was named a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/news/2022/11/22/football-vaughn-named-semifinalist-for-doak-walker-award.aspx" target="_blank">semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award</a>, has 1,148 rushing yards to rank 16th&nbsp;nationally, while he is 14th&nbsp;in the country with 128.5 scrimmage yards (rushing plus receiving) per game. He ranks second nationally among running backs with three receiving touchdowns, while he is fifth in catches (38) and 14th&nbsp;in receiving yards (266).

Vaughn is just the third player in school history with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons, joining Darren Sproles (2002, 2003, 2004) and Daniel Thomas (2009, 2010). Earlier this season, Vaughn became the fastest player in Big 12 history – and tied for the fastest player in the country since 1996 – to reach 3,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career, doing so in his 32nd&nbsp;game.

Finalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award will be announced on December 13, and those finalists will attend the award’s banquet and winner announcement on January 11.

Coming in at No. 12 in the latest College Football Playoff Top 25, Kansas State takes on Kansas on Saturday in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium, will be televised by FOX.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys tight ends played their own live version of Whac-A-Mole. The unique celebration followed a touchdown in the Cowboys' 28-20 win over the New York Giants. After rookie Peyton Hendershot scored on a 2-yard sweep, he immediately motioned to the other three tight ends on the field for the play toward one of the oversized Salvation Army red kettles in the back of the end zone. Those three all hopped in and started popping up and down before Hendershot used the football to whack Ferguson on top of the head. Ferguson was the one who came up with the idea.

Bills beat Lions 28-25 for 2nd win in 5 days at Ford Field

DETROIT (AP) — Tyler Bass made a tiebreaking 45-yard field goal with 2 seconds left, lifting the Buffalo Bills to a 28-25 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday for their second victory in five days at Ford Field. Josh Allen set up the game-winning kick by starting the drive with a 36-yard pass to Stefon Diggs and running twice for 12 yards. Buffalo has won two straight to move a half-game ahead of Miami in the AFC East. Buffalo was back in Detroit after the NFL shifted its previous home game against Cleveland to Ford Field because of a winter storm.

Kiffin plans to return; No. 20 Ole Miss falls to Bulldogs

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Will Rogers passed for two touchdowns and Mississippi State stopped a potential game-tying 2-point conversion with 1:25 remaining to preserve a 24-22 Egg Bowl win over No. 20 Mississippi. Mississippi State rallied from a 16-7 deficit in the second quarter with a 10-point outburst in the fourth quarter. Massimo Biscardi hit a go-ahead 34-yard field goal before Rogers connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Rara Thomas to build the 24-16 lead with 7:58 remaining. Andre Ayew scored Ghana's equalizer eight minutes later but Joao Felix regained the lead for Portugal in the 78th and Rafael Leao added a third. Osman Bukari reduced Ghana's deficit in the 89th. The 37-year-old Ronaldo has now scored in every World Cup since his first in 2006. He was looking to showcase his talents to potential new clubs after having his contract terminated at Manchester United this week.

Kenya faces threat of athletics ban for doping 'crisis'

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Kenya is facing the prospect of being banned from international athletics because of doping problems that authorities there say have reached "crisis" levels. A ban by track and field governing body World Athletics would likely have repercussions for a number of medal contenders at next year's world championships and the Paris Olympics in 2024. The threat of a ban was conceded by the Kenyan sports ministry and it said it was urging World Athletics "not to ban Kenya." World Athletics is due to hold a meeting of its decision-making Council in Rome next week when Kenya is reportedly due to be discussed.

The Black Bears are 2-2 on the year following a 61-59 victory over Northeastern on Monday night. On Saturday, Nov. 26, the Jayhawks will face tournament-host Saint Mary’s at 4 p.m. CT. The Gaels, who compete in the West Coast Conference, are 2-2 on the year after winning the Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament last season.Both games will be streamed on the West Coast Conference Network. Jayhawk fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis calling the action.Kansas improved to 3-0 on Sunday, Nov. 20, with a 73-43 victory over UTRGV, the largest margin of victory by the Jayhawks this season. Four Jayhawks scored in double figures against UTRGV, led by Holly Kersgieter and Chandler Prater with 15 points apiece. Kersgieter also led the Jayhawks with 15 rebounds – one off her career-high – as she recorded her first double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Prater also recorded a double-double, the first of her career, after pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds.KU’s leading scorer and rebounder through three games is Taiyanna Jackson, who had 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots against UTRGV after recording double-doubles in each of the Jayhawks’ first two games. Zakiyah Franklin scored seven points off the bench against UTRGV and now sits at 999 career points. With her next point, Franklin will become the 31st player in program history to score 1,000 points in a Jayhawk uniform.Kansas and Maine have met only once all-time in women’s basketball, with Kansas claiming a 126-63 victory over the Black Bears on December 1, 2010, at Allen Fieldhouse. The 126 points scored by the Jayhawks in that game remains a single-game school record. Kansas and Saint Mary’s have played twice previously, with the Jayhawks holding a 2-0 advantage over the Gaels. On their lone prior visit to Moraga, KU defeated Saint Mary’s 82-58 on January 4, 1985.
