Hutchinson Community College women's soccer forward&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/delgado_adriana_03x3">Adriana Delgado</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week after back-to-back games last week where she established or tied several career highs.

The sophomore forward from Wichita, had six goals and three assists for a 15-point week in three games, all Blue Dragon victories.

Against Dodge City, Delgado netted the game winner, tying her career high with two goals and establishing a new career bests with two assist and six points in a 4-1 victory.

Delgado reset her career highs for goals and points with four goals and nine points in a 10-0 rout of Crowder. Delgado's hat trick is the 98th in program history.

Delgado is the second-straight Blue Dragon to earn conference weekly honors, joining&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>, who won the award last week.

Delgado is the first Blue Dragon to earn national honors since Madison Quarles as named national goalkeeper of the week on October 22, 2022. She is the first national Player of the Week since October 28, 2021 when Hadlie Lowe earned the award.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who has been in the midst of a contract dispute, left open the possibility that he could be on the field for the Kansas City Chiefs when they open the season on Thursday night against the Detroit Lions.

Jones has been working out in Miami throughout the offseason and training camp while his agents, Jason and Michael Katz, negotiate with the Chiefs on a potential extension. Jones is entering the final year of a four-year, $80 million deal, and said in his first public comments Wednesday that he "just wants a raise" like any other employee in any line of work.

"Hopefully it gets worked out," said Jones, who was accompanied by the Katz brothers on a trip to visit with kids at Ronald McDonald House Charities. "It's always been my goal to be a Kansas City Chief for life. I've said that multiple time on social media platforms, from interviews, and they know where my position is at."

More than 40 local families at the Ronald McDonald House, which is dedicated to supporting families with sick children in their time of need, were able to meet with Jones during his appearance in Kansas City.

The 29-year-old pass rusher already has accrued millions in fines for missing mandatory workouts, training camp and preseason games. If Jones does not report before Thursday, he will begin losing about $1.1 million in weekly game checks.

Asked whether he felt he had let anybody down by not reporting, Jones replied: "How?"

"That's what I have to ask," Jones continued. "How have I let them down? It's just like when you're at a job, you're asking for a raise, who are you letting down? When you take the personal feelings out of it, you can kind of get it."

Jones is coming off perhaps his best season, matching a career high with 15 1/2 sacks on the way to a Super Bowl title.

His absence from the Kansas City defense could be particularly damaging given the loss of defensive end Charles Omenihu, who is suspended for six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. That has left youngsters George Karlaftis, entering his second year, and first-round draft pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah as the Chiefs' main pass rushers.

The market for defensive tackles, set by Aaron Donald with a three-year, $95 million deal, skyrocketed this past offseason. The Giants' Dexter Lawrence and the Commanders' Daron Payne each signed four-year, $90 million pacts, the Titans' Jeffrey Simmons signed for four years and $95 million, and the Jets' Quinnen Williams agreed to a four-year, $96 million deal.

The Chiefs and Jones' representatives were at an impasse until about a week ago, when general manager Brett Veach said their communication had increased in recent days. Veach was even optimistic that Jones would be available against Detroit.

"We're going to continue to press on and work hard," he said. "A lot of respect on both sides of this thing. It's been well-stated how we feel about Chris and he feels the same thing. We're just going to keep working on this thing."

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was blunt when asked about Jones after their final practice Tuesday. Reid declined to say whether he has been involved in negotiations and has continually said that his focus is solely on the players that are available.

"That's where I'm at," Reid said. "If you're not there, you're not there. Unfortunately, that's the name of the game, so you can't spend time — you have got to exhaust your time on the team you're playing. So that's where we're at."

Turns out there's a chance, however slight it may be, that Jones could be there against the Lions on Thursday night.

"I've been keeping in contact with my teammates. I've been working out every day, doing similar things to what they're doing in training camp," he said. "I'll be ready when the time comes."

Coach of Spain's World Cup-winning women's soccer team is fired weeks after victory celebration kiss

MADRID (AP) — The coach of Spain's World Cup-winning women's soccer team has been fired. The announcement Tuesday came less than three weeks after the victory celebration that led to the suspension of the country's soccer federation president for kissing a player. The Spanish soccer federation offered no immediate explanation for the dismissal of coach Jorge Vilda. The federation says Vilda was key to the growth of women's soccer and thanked him for leading the national team to the World Cup title and to No. 2 in the FIFA rankings. Vilda was among those who at first applauded federation president Luis Rubiales when he refused to quit.

Say cheese: Ohtani body double finds way into Angels' team photo

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — It is next to impossible to replace all that Shohei Ohtani can do when standing on a baseball field, although the Los Angeles Angels did their best for a few minutes Tuesday. With Ohtani unavailable for team photo day, as he continues to be examined for oblique soreness that cropped up Monday, the team put a body double in a No. 17 jersey and lined him up in the outfield with the rest of the players. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Wichita battled Corpus Christi in what was a one-run ball game until the bottom of the eighth. The Hooks drove in three runs in the bottom of the eighth and earned themselves enough cushion to hold on for the win. Corpus Christi defeated Wichita by a score of 5-1 and the Hooks now lead the series one game to none.

The Wind Surge took an early lead in the top of the fourth when Alex Isola hit his 19th home run of the season. The two-out solo home run flew over the left field wall.

The Hooks tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kenedy Corona hit a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in a run from third base.

Corpus Christi took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Melton hit a solo home run that flew over the right field wall.

The Hooks drove in some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Melton hit a two RBI single on a ground ball to left field. He then reached third on a two-base throwing error and J.C. Correa hit a single on a ground ball to right field that brought Melton home.

Jaylin Nowlin made his sixth start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched five innings where he gave up one run off two hits. He struck out six batters and walked three more.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gregory Santos balked with the bases-loaded as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-6 Tuesday night. The Royals overcame a 6-0 deficit to claim their first series win since July 28-Aug. 3. The Royals entered the ninth trailing 6-5. Nick Loftin reached on an error and went to second on a single by Michael Massey. Maikel Garcia hit into a fielder’s choice before Bobby Witt Jr. singled in the tying run. With two outs, Santos intentionally walked MJ Melendez to load the bases, bringing up Edward Olivares. Jackson Kowar (1-0) earned the win. Santos (2-2) took the loss.

It was the Royals first series win since Aug. 1-3 against the Mets, ironically a series that included the first balk-off win in franchise history. They entered the ninth trailing 6-5. Jackson Kowar (1-0) earned the win, the first of his three-year career.

“You usually don't think you're going to back-door one like that,” he said. “As soon as Salvy (Salvador Perez) lined out (for the second out), I thought that was just bad luck. But it kind of flipped back for us."

"I just wanted to get the sticks back up there. (Angel Zerpa, who pitched three scoreless innings of relief) did a really nice job of bridging the gap. That's a really good lineup. We were running into balls all night. I knew if I held them right there we'd have a chance.”

“They kept battling and creeping up,” disappointed Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “We had a couple of opportunities to tack on runs, but we didn't, and you saw the ending.”

Neither starter factored in the decision. Chicago starter Dylan Cease allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Brady Singer, in his first action since becoming a father for the first time on Sept. 1, allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings.

A night after not scoring until the eighth inning Monday, the White Sox scored five runs in the second inning. Andrew Vaughn beat out an infield hit leading off and Yoan Moncada followed with a 430-foot home run to right center. After Elvis Andrus and Oscar Colas hit one-out singles, Korey Lee hit his first career home run in the second. He came into the game with one hit in his first 25 MLB at-bats, and he broke an 0-for-23 slump.

Vaughn led off the third with a 437-foot home run to center, stretching the lead to 6-0.

The Royals were able to cash in a leadoff triple in the third. Garcia lined one to the wall in right center. He scored on a two-out single by Melendez. The Royals added a pair of runs in the fourth, the first one on a home run by Nelson Velazquez. It was Velazquez' 11th home run of the season, but his eighth in 22 games with the Royals and second in as many games. Massey also hit 11th home run with two outs. It traveled 441 feet, the longest blast of Massey's career.

“I knew I hit it well,” Massey said. “I still haven't figured out how to not sprint out of the box on a homer.”

Melendez hit his 14th homer of the year in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-4. Massey then drew the Royals within one run with an RBI groundout in the sixth.

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel, who was held out of Monday's game with hamstring tightness was available, according to KC manager Matt Quatraro, though he was not in the starting lineup.

The White Sox and Royals will play the final game of the three-game series Wednesday night. Chicago RHP Touki Toussaint (2-7, 4.87 ERA) will face RHP Jordan Lyles (4-15, 6.29 ERA) for KC.

⚾ Royals get "balk off" win over White Sox after rallying from 6-0 deficit

After a 3-0 week, including one Jayhawk Conference victory, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team remained No. 16 in this week’s NJCAA Division I national rankings.

Now ranked in nine-consecutive rankings periods dating back to last season, the No. 16 Blue Dragons face a huge early-season test on Wednesday when No. 11 Butler comes to the Salthawk Sports Complex in a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Hutchinson defeated Dodge City 4-1 last Wednesday to earn head coach Sammy Lane’s 250th coaching victory. The Blue Dragons then routed Crowder College 10-0 and NOC-Enid 3-0 over the weekend in Enid, Oklahoma.

The Top 5 teams in this week’s rankings are Iowa Western, Tyler, Eastern Florida State, Seminole State and Daytona State.

The Jayhawk Conference is still well represented with five teams in the Top 20.

Barton is at No. 10, followed by Butler at No. 11. The Blue Dragons are No. 16, Kansas City is No. 17 and Cowley is No. 18.

Hutchinson has Butler at home on Wednesday and travels to Coffeyville on Saturday this week.

⚽ WSOC: Blue Dragons remain No. 16 in latest poll, host No. 11 Butler on Wednesday

After a second-straight decisive victory on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College football team solidified its grip on the No. 1 spot in this week’s NJCAA Division I Football Rankings.

The new poll, released on Tuesday this week because of the Labor Day holiday, revealed the Blue Dragons will be in a Top 5 matchup on Saturday as Hutchinson travels to No. 5 Iowa Central this week.

Hutchinson (2-0) received 9 of 10 first-place votes to increase its lead over No. 2 Iowa Western (149-141). The Blue Dragons defeated Ellsworth 72-7 last Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

The top four teams – Hutchinson, Iowa Western, Northwest Mississippi and Kilgore – remained the same, but Iowa Central jumped up four spots to No. 5 after defeating previous No. 5 Garden City 30-20, rallying from a 13-point deficit to win.

Two other Jayhawk Conference teams are in this week’s rankings. Garden City (1-1) dropped to No. 10 and Butler (1-1) moved up one spot to No. 12. Dodge City (1-1) is receiving votes. The Blue Dragons have been ranked in 20 consecutive ranking period.

 </figure>Courtesy of HutchCC Athletic DepartmentAfter a second-straight decisive victory on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College football team solidified its grip on the No. 1 spot in this week’s NJCAA Division I Football Rankings.The new poll, released on Tuesday this week because of the Labor Day holiday, revealed the Blue Dragons will be in a Top 5 matchup on Saturday as Hutchinson travels to No. 5 Iowa Central this week.Hutchinson (2-0) received 9 of 10 first-place votes to increase its lead over No. 2 Iowa Western (149-141). The Blue Dragons defeated Ellsworth 72-7 last Saturday at Gowans Stadium.The top four teams – Hutchinson, Iowa Western, Northwest Mississippi and Kilgore – remained the same, but Iowa Central jumped up four spots to No. 5 after defeating previous No. 5 Garden City 30-20, rallying from a 13-point deficit to win.Two other Jayhawk Conference teams are in this week’s rankings. Garden City (1-1) dropped to No. 10 and Butler (1-1) moved up one spot to No. 12. Dodge City (1-1) is receiving votes. For the second-straight week, a Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer player earned Jayhawk Conference Division I Player of the Week.

Off back-to-back games where she set or tied career highs, Blue Dragon sophomore forward Adriana Delgado was named the KJCCC Division I Player of the Week on Tuesday.

For the week, Delgado had six goals and three assists for a 15-point week in three games.

Delgado reset her career highs for goals and points with four goals and nine points in a 10-0 rout of Crowder. Delgado’s hat trick is the 98th in program history.

Delgado is the second-straight Blue Dragon to earn conference weekly honors, joining Kaitlyn Edwards, who won the award last week.

🏈 HutchCC RB Tyrell Reed Jr. named KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas volleyball setter Camryn Turner has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for her outstanding performances in last week’s Kansas Invitational, the conference office announced Tuesday.

The Topeka, Kansas, native largely contributed to then-No. 23 Kansas’ four-set victory over No. 19 Marquette on Saturday, as well as taking No. 25 ranked Purdue to five sets on Thursday.

Turner registered 98 total assists across the two matches (57 vs. Purdue and 41 vs. Marquette), which was good for a 10.89 assists per set average on the weekend.

She also added five kills in each match and registered two huge aces and one block assist in the win against Marquette.

Defensively, Turner was equally as strong, recording 14 digs against Purdue and 12 versus Marquette, bringing her digs per set average to 3.53 this season.

This is the second conference weekly honor for Turner. As a freshman she was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 23, 2021.

🏈 K-State discusses Troy game at weekly press conference

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There are some heavyweight showdowns for Big 12 schools in Week 2 of the college football season. Texas-Alabama tops the list, but Iowa plays Iowa State, Utah faces Baylor, Cincinnati takes on Pittsburgh, Kansas plays Illinois, Texas Tech plays Oregon and Oklahoma faces Arizona State. If the Big 12 wants to a big player after college football realignment, now is the time to prove it, especially after the league was embarrassed a week ago. Among the lumps the league took, TCU lost at home to Colorado, Texas Tech fell to Wyoming and Baylor was beaten by Texas State.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There are some heavyweight matchups for Big 12 schools in Week 2 of the college football season, headlined by the big one in 'Bama, where No. 11 Texas visits the No. 3 Crimson Tide for a showdown of future SEC rivals.

It's a good chance for the league to bounce back from an embarrassing start.

Baylor is coming off a loss to Texas State and gets No. 12 Utah, which just beat Florida in its opener. Texas Tech is coming off a field-storming loss of its own at Wyoming to face No. 13 Oregon. Iowa State tries to beat Iowa for just the second time in the past eight seasons, and Kansas gets a Friday night visit from Illinois in another tangle with the Big Ten.

Throw in the River City Rivalry between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State's trip to future Big 12 foe Arizona State and UCF playing Boise State on the Smurf turf and it becomes a statement week for Commissioner Brett Yormark's conference.

"We're focused on what we need to do," said Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian, whose team narrowly lost at home to Alabama a year ago. "The moment you start focusing on what the outcome could be, what the result could be, the game hits you in the mouth and you could lose. So we needed to focus on what we need to do."

There probably isn't a whole lot of Big 12 pride for the departing Longhorns, especially after Yormark publicly told Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire that he "better take care of business" when the Red Raiders play Texas later this season.

The rest of the league has pride, though, and it took a beating a week ago.

In the highest-profile game of the weekend, College Football Playoff runner-up TCU lost at home to Colorado — entirely rebuilt by Deion Sanders after winning once a year ago. Baylor was heavily favored to beat Texas State but lost in lopsided fashion, and the Red Raiders were a trendy pick to play in the Big 12 title game before they were waylaid by Wyoming in double-overtime.

Even some of the wins were nail-biters: Oklahoma State scuffled to a 27-13 win over Central Arkansas, BYU beat Sam Houston 14-0 and fellow newcomer Houston had to hold on in the fourth quarter to beat UTSA, 17-14.

Not exactly the start to the season that the new-look Big 12 had in mind.

"It's been a hard couple of days looking at tape, seeing what went wrong, where plays could be made," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. "I think there's been honest and open conversations and discussion on things we did wrong, that we could do better."

It won't be easy against the Utes, who easily put away the Gators even without star quarterback Cam Rising, who is working his way back from a torn ACL that he sustained in a Rose Bowl loss to Penn State in January.

The Bears lost their own quarterback, Blake Shapen, after he hurt his MCL in the loss to the Bobcats.

"It was a disappointing loss for Baylor, I'm sure," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "We don't expect the same team we saw on Saturday, that we'll see on tape, in that game. They'll fix things. They have good coaches and will get the ship corrected."

That's probably what Oregon's coaches are saying about Texas Tech this week.

"The message is really, 'Don't let Wyoming beat you twice,'" McGuire said earlier this week. "No matter what happened Saturday, we cannot allow next Saturday to affect us, other than learning, right? ... Oregon is going to be a great opportunity. That's a word we use a lot, even before the Wyoming game. We have a great opportunity in front of us."

That goes for the entire Big 12 this week.

Iowa State ended a long losing streak to Iowa last season by shutting down the Hawkeyes' inept offense in a 10-7 victory. But the Cyclones haven't beaten their biggest rivals in consecutive years since 2012 — Matt Campbell's second season in charge.

Kansas faces the Illini while aiming for a perfect non-conference schedule for the second straight year. Cincinnati and Pitt once played annually but will be meeting for the first time since 2012. Oklahoma State could win its eighth straight non-conference road game by beating Arizona State. 🏈 Big 12 faces a week of big-time matchups after a tough start to season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Travis Kelce hyperextended his knee during the Chiefs' final practice before their opener against Detroit, leaving the status of the All-Pro tight end in question when Kansas City faces the Lions on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the injury occurred during their final full workout Tuesday but provided no other details. Players in the locker room said Kelce was hurt on a play in the red zone but was able to limp off the field on his own.

"We'll just see how he does going forward," Reid said.

The 33-year-old Kelce has not missed a game to injury since his rookie season in 2013, when a microfracture procedure to fix a cartilage problem in his knee ended it after one game. He has twice skipped meaningless games to end the regular season.

"I was in on that play (that Kelce was hurt)," Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore said Tuesday. "I was talking to somebody and he was limping, just walking off the field. It was a good sign to see him get up by himself and get off the field."

One day earlier, Kelce proclaimed his body felt "as good as it'll feel all year" heading into the new season.

"I've been very fortunate that we have the best training staff in the league, so getting in the training room, doing a lot of rehab, and just making sure the body is tuned up," Kelce said before Monday's practice. "There's a lot that goes into it. You just have to be a professional, and you just have to be very fortunate.

"Actually," he said, "there's lot of fortune that goes into the game and staying healthy and being out there every week."

Kelce is coming off perhaps the best season of his 10-year career, catching a career-high 110 passes for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was voted a first-team All-Pro for the fourth time and chosen to the Pro Bowl for an eighth consecutive season while helping Kansas City win the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in four years.

"It's tough and we love Kelce and we want him to be out there," said Chiefs tight end Noah Gray, who would be in line to start if Kelce is unavailable. "He's been a great captain, a great leader for this team, a great mentor for me and the rest of the guys.

"He's as tough as they get," Gray added. "I hope he's out there."

The Chiefs also have Blake Bell on the 53-man roster with Matt Bushman and Gerrit Prince on the practice squad.

Most of the injuries Kelce has sustained in his career have been relatively minor. He has twice been in the concussion protocol but was able to return for the following game. He's played through a rib injury and an ankle sprain, had offseason surgery on his shoulder and dealt with soreness in his knee during the 2020 playoffs.

"He's one of the toughest guys out there," Bushman said, "and he loves to play the game."

The drop-off is steep from Kelce to the rest of the tight end group. He has 814 catches for 10,344 yards and 69 touchdowns over the course of his career; the backups combined have 95 catches for 976 yards and three touchdowns.

The Chiefs are at least healthy at wide receiver, which should take some of the pressure off the tight ends.

The big question mark was speedy Kadarius Toney, who had surgery for a torn meniscus early in training camp and missed all three preseason games. The dynamic-if-injury prone playmaker returned to practice last week and made it through the remainder of game week workouts without any problems.

If Kelce is unavailable, the Chiefs could have all seven of their wide receivers active on game day.

"We've got to make sure we have a plan on how to use them," Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Playing in its second Friday night game in consecutive weeks, Kansas will take on Illinois on Friday, Sept. 8 inside David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium for a primetime matchup under the lights on ESPN2.

Kickoff is slated for 6:37 p.m. CT on ESPN2 with Anish Shroff (Play-by-Play), Andre Ware (Analyst) and Paul Carcaterra (Sideline) on the call. Kansas will be hosting an ESPN nationally televised weeknight game for the first time since 1995, when the Jayhawks defeated TCU 38-20 on ESPN.

The meeting between the Jayhawks and the Fighting Illini will be the sixth game played in series history, including the first since 1968. Illinois owns the series advantage at 3-2, while the only game played in Lawrence was played in 1892 and ended in favor of the Jayhawks, 26-4.

Kansas enters the game following a 48-17 season opening win at home against Missouri State on Sept. 1, in which Kansas kicked off year three under head coach Lance Leipold. The Jayhawks were led by 521 yards of offense, including four touchdowns by four different rushers. The Kansas defense forced Missouri State into two second half turnovers to help put away the Bears for the first win of the 2023 campaign.

Bret Bielema is in his third season as coach at Illinois and his squad comes off a 30-28 victory over Toledo in their season opener on Sept. 2. Fighting Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-26 passing in the season opener, which led to a 29-yard game winning field goal by Caleb Griffin in the final seconds.

Illinois finished the 2022 season at 8-5, including 3-2 on the road, and returns 15 starters, including six on offense, six on defense and three on special teams.

Following Friday night’s matchup with Illinois, the Jayhawks will hit the road for the first time during the 2023 season, when they take on Nevada on Saturday, September 16 in Reno, Nevada.

Kansas unveiled new “Blackhawk” uniforms on Sunday, which will be worn against Illinois on Friday. The first 10,000 fans to the game on Friday will receive a special edition rally towel.
