KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association released its 2023 Preseason Polls for football on Tuesday, July 25 at its annual Football Media Day in Kansas City. The Tigers were picked 8th&nbsp;in the Coaches Poll and 10th&nbsp;in the Media Poll. Pittsburg State was picked as the favorite in each poll, coming off an undefeated regular season in 2022 when it went 11-0 in MIAA play.

The Tigers placed 10th&nbsp;in the MIAA standings in 2022, finishing with a record of 3-8. The Tigers won two of their last four games to finish clear of Northeastern State and Lincoln in the standings. Lincoln is leaving the MIAA and will not participate as a conference member in football this season, even though most MIAA schools still have Lincoln on the schedule as a non-conference game. The conference will consist of 11 teams in football in 2023.

The Coaches and Media Polls were mirrored among the top seven teams. The only difference was Missouri Southern and Missouri Western being picked ahead of FHSU in the Media Poll. The Tigers battled their share of injuries throughout 2022 and struggled to find their footing. Only 23 players on last year's squad played in all 11 games. Of those 23, only four started all 11 contests.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/makel-williams/7430">Makel Williams</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/evan-darville/7345">Evan Darville</a>&nbsp;on the Tiger defense are the only returners to this year's team that were among the group of four to start all contests. ⚾ Royals chairman and CEO gives new details on stadium timeline, location

WICHITA, Kan.—The TBT Region games in Wichita this past week have had a little bit of hometown flavor for former Hutchinson Salthawk native Caleb Walker playing with the Wichita AfterShocks.

While Caleb didn't play for WSU, networking in basketball works in many ways. "Yeah, I knew several guys from the team and I have known Zack Bush &nbsp;for quite a while, so when he called and said they needed a player for my position, I said sure, I'll come" Walker said in a phone interview late on Monday.

Walker graduated from Hutch High in 2008 after playing 4 years of football for Randy Dreiling and basketball for Phil Anderson, he took his talents first to Butler Community College and then to Nebraska graduating in 2012.&nbsp; When the NBA didn't call, he was bound for Europe where he has played for the past 10 seasons with great success. He played for&nbsp;Team FOG Naestved&nbsp;for two years in Denmark, then moved on to France, Belgium , Portugal, Israel and most recently wrapped up his 2nd season with SLUC Basket Nancy again in France.&nbsp;

Former KU Jayhawk Frank Mason III is a Nancy team-mate with Walker on SLUC Basket Nancy.

SLUC Basket Nancy played in the same Euro League with this year's number 1 NBA draft pick,&nbsp;Victor Wembanyama who was taken by the San Antonio Spurs. Walker said "Yeah, he was pretty good. We played them twice in league play."

Walker indicated that European basketball was similar to the NBA's G-League in talent, it just is played a little slower, but the talent is there.&nbsp; "It gives guys a chance to make a living and maybe can compete at the next level."

Walker, who is 33 years old, hopes to play for 6-8 more years. He is planning a family now as well as his 11 year old son Cayman has been watching is dad star for the AfterShocks. Walker hopes to maybe go into coaching after his career comes to an end.

Right now, he is contributing to the AfterShocks success as they have won three straight games and have moved into the TBT Quarter Finals.&nbsp;

The AfterShocks looked buried in Round 2 against the Beale Street Boys, down by 21 points in the second half. But, the Wichita State alumni squad roared back in front of a raucous Koch Arena crowd, outscoring the Beale Street Boys 25-7 in the fourth quarter to advance to the regional final. In Sunday's game vs Team Arkansas, Walker had 14 points to lead the AfterShocks in scoring.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Jaden Gustafson collected three hits and drove in a season-high five runs to help lead the Monarchs to a 13-8 win over the Newton Sluggin' Rebels on Monday evening at Hobart-Detter Field. 

The game marked the final home game of the 2023 summer for the Monarchs.

Hutchinson (17-16) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Max Buettenback. Newton answered with a run of their own in the top of the second on an RBI double from Austin Burroughs.&nbsp;

The Sluggin' Rebels tacked on two more in the third to take their first lead of the night, but that didn't last long. Gustafson cleared the bases on a three-run triple to the gap in right field to put the Monarchs in front 4-3.&nbsp;

Newton (10-22) regained the 5-4 lead in the fifth inning&nbsp; following back-to-back hits from Easton Bryant and Tate Lewis. The Monarchs exploded for five in the fifth, highlighted by a pair of doubles from Cooper Harris and Blake Bradford, plus a two-run home run over the center field fence from Gustafson.&nbsp;

The Monarchs added another run in the sixth and three more in the eighth courtesy of Jarrett Flaggert tripling followed by a two-run home run from Bradford.&nbsp;

Newton scored three in the ninth, but too little and too late, as the Sluggin' Rebels dropped its eleventh straight game.&nbsp;

Gustafson finished the night 3-for-4 with a triple, home run and five RBI. Caleb Cotton (2-for-6), Flaggert (2-for-5) and Bradford (2-for-4) all had multi-hit games, as well.&nbsp;

Alec Stanfield earned the win on the mound, going five innings and striking out eight Newton hitters, and walking none. The Monarchs used four pitchers and struck out a season-high 17 and walking just three.

The Monarchs are off tonight before opening a three-game series in Kingman against the Islanders Wednesday through Friday, and then closing out the regular season on Saturday in Derby.&nbsp;

ST. JOESEPH, MO.—The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the second practice of training camp on Monday morning as the defending Super Bowl champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Some rain in the area meant that the Chiefs began practice inside, but fortunately for the fans in attendance, the weather cleared up and allowed for practice to resume outdoors.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Salvador Perez became the 10th player in major league history to hit 200 homers as a catcher and Ryan Yarbrough allowed one run in six innings, lifting the Kansas City Royals to a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night.

Straw hit a two-run single in the seventh off Jose Cuas to pull Cleveland within 5-3. Josh Bell added an RBI single and Amed Rosario went 3 for 4, his 12th game with three hits or more, which tied the major league lead.

“We just had a tough time keeping the line moving,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “Yarbrough gave our lefties some difficulties.”

Cleveland fell four games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central. Earlier in the day, ace Shane Bieber was shifted to the 60-day injured list as he continues to battle right elbow inflammation.

Francona said the 2020 AL Cy Young winner has not experienced a setback but isn’t on track to return until mid-September. Bieber went 5-6 with a 3.77 ERA in 19 starts before getting hurt on July 9 against the Royals.

Rookie left-hander Allen matched his season highs with seven innings and five runs allowed, striking out five. He allowed two homers for the first time.

“I was trying to go up against Perez, but pulled it down and he put a good swing on it,” Allen said. “That’s why he is as good as he is. We were really efficient today, but they took advantage of some of those opportunities and jumped on them.”

Perez, an eight-time All-Star and the 2015 World Series MVP with Kansas City, is one of 21 catchers with 500 extra-base hits and has a team-best 17 home runs this season.

“Everyone knows what a big part of the organization that Salvy is,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “And he continues to be one.”

Royals RHP Zack Greinke (1-10, 5.40 ERA) takes on Guardians RHP Aaron Civale (3-2, 2.71). Greinke has not won on the road since Aug. 13, 2021, when he was pitching for Houston at Angel Stadium.

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The National Football League is preparing for the upcoming 2023 season and nine former Kansas Jayhawks are heading to NFL Training Camp to compete for a spot on their teams’ active roster.

Dorance Armstrong, Jr. is the dean of Jayhawks in the NFL, entering his sixth season with the Dallas Cowboys after entering the league as a fourth-round draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Last season, Armstrong started five games at defensive end and finished with a career-high 8.5 sacks for the Cowboys. A native of Houston, Armstrong was a two-time All-Big 12 honoree while at Kansas and he was the first Jayhawk to ever be named Preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.

Steven Sims, Jr. is set for his fifth professional season and first with the Houston Texans after signing as a free agent in the offseason. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021-22 and made 14 receptions for 104 yards while rushing for 70 yards on 13 attempts last season. From Houston, Sims played in 46 games at Kansas from 2015-18 and continues to rank No. 2 on KU’s all-time list for receiving yards (2,582) and touchdowns (19), and No. 3 in career receptions (214).

Hakeem Adeniji heads into his fourth season with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s appeared in 39 career games, making 15 starts, including nine starts are right guard during the 2021 season as Cincinnati advanced to Super Bowl LVI. Adeniji, a native of Garland, Texas, was a four-year starter at Kansas from 2016-19 and an All-Big 12 First Team selection as a senior.

Daniel Wise is entering his third year in the NFL and first as a member of the world champion Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he signed in February after a brief stint on the practice squad late in the 2022 season. He appeared in 17 games, making five starts, for the Washington Commanders in 2021-22, and has previously played with the Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys. A Lewisville, Texas native, Wise spent five seasons in Lawrence from 2014-18 and earned All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2018.

Kyron Johnson is in his second season with the Philadelphia Eagles, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he appeared in 16 games and was a member of the Eagles’ Super Bowl LVII roster. From Arlington, Texas, Johnson started games in each of his four years at KU and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors from PFF in 2021.

Kwamie Lassiter II spent the entire 2022 season on the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad after signing as an undrafted free agent following the NFL Draft. He was elevated to the active roster in Week 12 against the Tennessee Titans and figures to compete for time at wide receiver and on special teams. A Chandler, Arizona, native and second generation Jayhawk, Lassiter is No. 5 in school history with 148 career receptions from 2017-21.

Earl Bostick, Jr. was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft and enters his rookie season in the league. He came to Lawrence from Barnwell, South Carolina, in 2017 and spent six seasons with the Jayhawks, first at tight end before starting on the offensive line for three seasons. In 2022, Bostick received All-Big 12 honorable mention and was named an Academic All-America Second Team selection.

Lonnie Phelps, Jr. is headed to training camp with the Cleveland Browns, who quickly signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. In his one season at Kansas, the Cincinnati, Ohio native led the Jayhawks with 11.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks, while ranking fourth on the team with 57 total tackles. Phelps started his Jayhawk career in style, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 7 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss from his defensive end position in the season opener against Tennessee Tech.

Caleb Sampson joined the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. From Saint Rose, Louisiana, Sampson spent four seasons at Kansas and compiled 77 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Last season, he ranked fourth on the team with 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Last season, Armstrong started five games at defensive end and finished with a career-high 8.5 sacks for the Cowboys. A native of Houston, Armstrong was a two-time All-Big 12 honoree while at Kansas and he was the first Jayhawk to ever be named Preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.Steven Sims, Jr. is set for his fifth professional season and first with the Houston Texans after signing as a free agent in the offseason. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021-22 and made 14 receptions for 104 yards while rushing for 70 yards on 13 attempts last season. From Houston, Sims played in 46 games at Kansas from 2015-18 and continues to rank No. 2 on KU’s all-time list for receiving yards (2,582) and touchdowns (19), and No. 3 in career receptions (214).Hakeem Adeniji heads into his fourth season with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Phelps started his Jayhawk career in style, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 7 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss from his defensive end position in the season opener against Tennessee Tech.Caleb Sampson joined the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. From Saint Rose, Louisiana, Sampson spent four seasons at Kansas and compiled 77 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Last season, he ranked fourth on the team with 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

🏈 Nine former Jayhawks heading to NFL Training Camps

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Men’s basketball bluebloods Kansas and North Carolina will meet in a home-and-home series starting in the 2024-25 season, the two schools announced today.

The first meeting will be in historic Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas, on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024. The following year the two teams will meet at The Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Friday, Nov. 14, 2025. In the 12-game series between the two schools that dates back to 1957 NCAA title game, this will be just the second meeting in Allen Fieldhouse and the first in the Dean Smith Center.

Kansas is the winningest program in college basketball history entering the 2023-24 season with 2,385 all-time victories. North Carolina is third on the list with 2,347 wins.

“These will be two great games from programs whose rich histories are intertwined so much,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “It will be a special day in both Chapel Hill and Lawrence when we play and I am looking forward to it.”

The KU-UNC series is tied at 6-6 and Kansas has won the last four matchups, all during the KU head coach Bill Self era and all in the NCAA Tournament. Kansas won the last meeting, 72-69, in the 2022 NCAA National Championship game on April 4, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

The two teams have met seven times in the NCAA Tournament, including two NCAA titles games in 1957, a UNC triple overtime 54-53 win, and 2022. Kansas is 5-2 against North Carolina in NCAA Tournament contests.

WICHITA, Kan.—Tyrus McGee hit a three-pointer to hit the target score and send the host AfterShocks to a Wichita regional title with a 63-59 win over Team Arkansas. McGee, who missed his first eight three-point attempts, drained the game-winning three-pointer to send the Wichita State alumni squad on to the quarterfinal round. 

Former Hutchinson High Salthawk product Caleb Walker had 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting in the win for the AfterShocks, who won despite going just 3-for-22 from beyond the arc. Hunt Mickelson and Don Robinson had 14 points apiece in the loss for Team Arkansas.

TBT veteran and second all-time leading scorer Marcus Hall’s 15 points led a balanced Heartfire attack in a 73-60 win over top-seeded Mass Street. Richard Solomon and Larry Owens each reached double figures in the win for Heartfire, which used a 22-8 second quarter run to take a commanding lead in winning the Wichita (KU) Regional. Rodney Green tallied 13 points in the losing effort for Mass Street, which connected on just three of its final 21 attempts from beyond the arc.&nbsp;

Garoppolo did not participate in organized team activities because of the foot injury. AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand is potentially one win away from advancing to the knockout stage of the Women's World Cup for the first time in team history, and the co-host nation has quickly embraced its Football Ferns. Scott Rolen credits his parents, Fred McGriff thanks fellow players at Hall of Fame induction

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Scott Rolen and Fred McGriff have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Rolen was the only player to be voted in by the Baseball Writers' Association of America this year, and McGriff was selected unanimously by the Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee. Rolen credited his parents for raising him to be a good person, not a major league ballplayer. They were on hand in Cooperstown on Sunday, just as they were when he made his debut with the Phillies in 1996. McGriff said there was no greater honor than having fellow players deem him worthy of the Hall of Fame.

Novak Djokovic withdraws from Toronto tournament, opts for more rest after loss in Wimbledon final

TORONTO (AP) — Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the National Bank Open, opting for additional rest after his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. Tennis Canada announced Sunday that Djokovic pulled out of the only Canadian stop on the ATP Tour schedule due to fatigue. The 36-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam champion was set to begin his hard-court preparations for the U.S. Open after falling to the top-ranked Alcaraz last Sunday in a five-set final at Wimbledon. American Christopher Eubanks, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, will gain automatic entry into the main draw as Djokovic's replacement.

Denny Hamlin gets his record 7th victory at Pocono and 50th of his NASCAR Cup Series career

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Denny Hamlin returned to victory lane Sunday at Pocono Raceway a year after his first-place finish was thrown out. Sunday's win is his record seventh at the track and the 50th in his Cup Series career. Hamlin also gave Toyota its 600th NASCAR victory. Hamlin passed Hall of Fame driver Jeff Gordon for most wins at the tri-oval track. Hamlin and his former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch had their 1-2 finishes stripped a year ago by NASCAR for aerodynamics violations. This year, he finished ahead of runner-up Tyler Reddick. Martin Truex Jr., who won last week at New Hampshire, was third. Kevin Harvick and Ty Gibbs rounded out the top five.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs held their first full-squad workout of training camp Sunday under a bright sunny sky and without All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones.

Coach Andy Reid says he’s not worried yet about the absence of his star lineman, who has yet to report for camp.

“We’ll just see how things go here down the road,” Reid said following Sunday’s practice. “There had been communication, we’ll see where it goes from here and we’ll take it. If you’re not here, we just keep moving, and that’s how we roll. We don’t worry a lot about that. We let it take care of itself and we got great people working on that.”

Jones has yet to report to camp as he seeks a new contract. The 29-year-old is due to make $19.5 million in base salary this season and carries a salary cap hit of almost $28.3 million.

The Chiefs are also motivated to renegotiate his contract. The NFL Players Association public salary cap report Sunday showed the club with just more than $1 million in available cap space.

General manager Brett Veach prefers maintaining a balance of 5 to 10 million in cap space during this time of the year. Hashing out a new long-term extension with Jones would keep him in Kansas City beyond the 2023 season while providing the club with much-needed salary cap relief.

Jones is seeking a new deal that would make him the second-highest-paid player in the league at his position.

Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams currently leads defensive tackles with an annual average salary of $31.67 million. There’s a big gap, however, between Donald and the No. 2 highest-paid tackle, Quinnen Williams. The New York Jets signed Williams to an extension earlier this month averaging $24 million per year.

That leaves a sizable target zone in which a new extension for Jones might fit. His absence from camp suggests the two sides remain far apart in negotiations, and Reid hinted at a change in tone when asked about his communication with the star defensive tackle.

“It’s been good up to just a bit ago,” Reid said. “They’re doing their thing, we’re doing our thing. And we’ll just see where it goes from there.”

While the Chiefs have handed out large contracts to superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Mahomes is currently the seventh-best-paid quarterback at $45 million per year and Kelce ranks No. 3 among tight ends at $14.3 million per season.

Club chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said Sunday he’s not focused on where players rank in salary. He also trusts Veach to make the right decision.

“We really don’t think about it in the context of who’s the highest-paid player in the league, we think about in the context of the Kansas City Chiefs, and what’s best for the organization, not only this year but as we go forward,” Hunt said.

“One of the challenges in the National Football League is the salary cap. And it makes it tough to keep a championship team together. That’s something that Brett and his staff have really focused on. I think they’ve done a fantastic job.”

Daniel Wise, who entered the NFL from Kansas as an undrafted free agent in 2019, stepped into Jones’ place Sunday with the team’s starting defense. Wise has never had a sack in 17 games in the NFL. Jones, meanwhile, has 65 sacks since 2016, trailing only Donald (83) among defensive tackles during that time.

Safety Justin Reid said he’s excited to see young players such as Wise get an opportunity to showcase their skills. The absence of Jones isn’t a distraction, he added.

“He’s a professional, let him do his thing,” Reid said. “I’m focused on the guys here taking care of the (defensive back) room making sure that our young guys are ready to play.”

Middle linebacker Nick Bolton said the leadership of Jones is one thing the team will miss in his absence during camp.

“(It’s) most definitely one of the things I know he brings to the table,” Bolton said. “But again, at the same time, we’re working with the guys we got here, we’re going to come in every single day, put our best efforts forward. And when it gets here, we’ll make sure everybody’s up to speed and competing with him.”

NOTES: Wide receiver Kadarius Toney tweaked his knee returning a punt during warmups and was held out of the remainder of practice as a precaution. Rookie offensive tackle Wanya Morris suffered a hamstring strain Friday during the team’s rookie camp and did not practice Sunday. ... Starting running back Isiah Pacheco wore a yellow non-contact jersey Sunday as he returns from offseason surgeries on his shoulder and hand. He did not take part in the 11-on-11 scrimmage Sunday. “We’ll just see where he’s at,” Reid said. “As he goes, he’s got that, you got to kind of watch it, because he’s got that personality, where he’s 100 miles an hour on every play, that’s the reason we put the yellow jersey on him. So he doesn’t do anything crazy to himself, but yet, he wants to stay in football shape, especially for that position, that running back position."

AMARILLO, Texas - The Wind Surge had six stolen bases including Seth Gray stealing home in tonight’s road series finale. Combine those with the 16 hits Wichita got as a team and their offense could not be slowed down. The Wind Surge defeated Amarillo 12-6 in the series finale. Amarillo won the series four games to two.

The Sod Poodles took an early lead with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first. First Caleb Roberts hit a solo home run on a fly ball to right center field, then Ivan Melendez homered on a fly ball to left center field.

Wichita’s offense woke up in the top of the fifth. They took the lead after four runs scored in the inning off of three hits. David Banuelos hit an RBI double and then DaShawn Keirsey hit a two RBI triple to take the lead. Yunior Severino added one more run with an RBI single to wrap up the inning.

Seth Gray added two runs for Wichita off two different plays in the top of the sixth. First, he hit an RBI single and was able to advance to second after a fielding error by the Sod Poodles. He then stole home plate from third base after the Amarillo catcher attempted to throw out Banuelos at second.

Deyvison De Los Santos hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to cut Wichita’s lead to three.

The Wind Surge exploded in the top of the seventh inning. Yoyner Fajardo stared things off with an RBI single. Jake Rucker had a two RBI double and Gray had an RBI double. Tanner Schobel put one more run on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored a runner.

The Sod Poodles scored a few but failed to take the lead back from Wichita. J.J. D’ORazio hit an RBI double and Nick Dalesandro hit a sacrifice fly that scored a runner in the bottom of the seventh. Melendez then hit his second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Will Holland added an extra insurance run in the top of the ninth. He crushed a ball out of the stadium into the parking lot for a solo home run.

Aaron Rozek started on the mound for Wichita for the 14th time this season. He pitched three innings where he gave up two runs off three hits. He struck out three batters and walked two more. Isaac Mattson earned his first win.

The Sod Poodles started Conor Grammes on the mound. He pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit. He struck out five batters and walked none. Gerald Ogando was credited with the loss.

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to (9-12, 37-52) and the Amarillo Sod Poodles fall to (14-7, 48-42).

NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run since May 20 and went 4 for 4 as the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Sunday to complete their third series sweep of the season.

Gleyber Torres' two-run homer sparked New York’s four-run first inning against Jordan Lyles (1-12). Torres extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games but exited in the seventh because of left hip tightness.

Luis Severino (2-4) won for the first time in four starts since June 24.

Rizzo also hit an RBI double in the first and singled in the fifth before capping a 10-pitch at-bat with a single in the eighth. It was Rizzo’s 15th career four-hit game and first since Aug. 4, 2019.

Harrison Bader punctuated New York’s early burst with an RBI single and the Yankees took all three games from last-place Kansas City for their first series sweep since winning three times in Cincinnati from May 19-21.

New York improved to 18-22 without slugger Aaron Judge, who faced 16 pitches from rehabbing reliever Jonathan Loáisiga before the game as they both work their way back from injuries.

The Yankees held a four-run lead when Rizzo batted with one out in the third. After fouling off two pitches, the first baseman homered into the lower rows of the right-center seats.

Rizzo carried his bat about halfway up the line before calmly dropping it and starting his trot. Teammates gave him the silent treatment and then mobbed him at the end of the dugout to celebrate Rizzo’s 12th homer.

Rizzo had gone 187 plate appearances and 166 at-bats since connecting off Cincinnati reliever Ian Gibaut.

The Yankees added three in the eighth on Oswald Peraza’s infield single and a throwing error by Kansas City first baseman Nick Pratto ahead of a sacrifice fly by Kyle Higashioka.

Salvador Perez hit a solo homer to end an 0-for-16 skid and Michael Massey launched a two-run shot off Severino, who allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Freddy Fermin and Kyle Isbel homered in the ninth off Ron Marinaccio, but the Royals lost their fifth straight.

Lyles, the major league leader in losses, gave up five runs and nine hits in five innings. The Royals are 1-18 in his starts.

UConn basketball coach Danny Hurley, who led the school to its fifth national championship this year, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Hurley, a Royals fan, was presented with a signed jersey from Hall of Famer George Brett during an appearance on Kansas City’s pregame show.

It was the third major league park the Huskies were honored in since their 76-59 championship game win over San Diego State on April 3.

On May 1 at Citi Field, Andre Jackson Jr. threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Mets faced the Braves.

On Friday at Fenway Park, Donovan Clingan and Tristen Newton threw out first pitches before the Red Sox faced the Mets.

Yankees: Loáisiga (right elbow inflammation) will face hitters again Wednesday in Florida and could start a minor league rehabilitation assignment next weekend. ... LHP Nestor Cortes (strained left rotator cuff) allowed one run and four hits while throwing 42 pitches over 2 1/3 innings for Double-A Somerset in his first rehab game.

Royals: LHP Ryan Yarbrough (2-5, 5.21 ERA) opposes Cleveland LHP Logan Allen (4-2, 3.21) in the opener of a three-game series Monday in Kansas City.
