AP Sports Report for June 8th, 2024:

Jasmine Paolini will try to stop Iga Swiatek in the French Open women's final

PARIS (AP) — Jasmine Paolini will try to accomplish something no one has been able to do in quite some time: defeat Iga Swiatek at the French Open. The top-seeded Swiatek carries a 20-match Roland Garros winning streak into Saturday's final against 12th-seeded Paolini. Swiatek is a 23-year-old from Poland who is bidding for her third consecutive title in Paris. It would also be her fourth championship in five years at the clay-court major and fifth Grand Slam trophy overall. She is 4-0 in Slam finals so far. She won the U.S. Open in 2022. Italy's Paolini will be participating in a major final for the first time at age 28.

French Open men's final: Carlos Alcaraz seeks a third Grand Slam title and Alexander Zverev a first

PARIS (AP) — When Carlos Alcaraz was a kid growing up in Spain, he used to run home from school and flip on the TV to check out the French Open. Long before he was preparing to play in Sunday's final in Paris against Alexander Zverev, Alcaraz watched a lot of matches involving Rafael Nadal as his countryman was accumulating a record 14 titles at Roland Garros. Alcaraz has triumphed on the U.S. Open's hard courts in 2022, and Wimbledon's grass courts in 2023, and now he is one victory away from holding a trophy on the red clay in Paris. He would be the youngest man to own a major championship on all three surfaces. Zverev seeks his first Grand Slam title.

Caitlin Clark makes 7 3-pointers, scores 30 points to lead Indiana over winless Washington 85-83

WASHINGTON (AP) — Caitlin Clark made seven 3-pointers, equaled a career high with 30 points and made enough of her free throws down the stretch to help the Indiana Fever hold on for an 85-83 victory over the winless Washington Mystics. Clark easily had the most 3-pointers of her young career and converted three of her four free throws late. She missed the last one, and the ball was knocked out of bounds as the Mystics tried to rush up the court. That gave Washington one last chance with 1.4 seconds left, but the Mystics couldn't get a shot off in time.

Teoscar Hernández hits 2-run double in 11th, lifts Dodgers over Yankees 2-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Teoscar Hernández broke up a scoreless game with a two-run double in the 11th inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Yankees 2-1 to stop New York's season-best eight-game winning streak in a matchup viewed as a possible World Series preview. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball in his Yankee Stadium debut, and Anthony Banda, Blake Treinen, Daniel Hudson, Michael Grove and Yohan Ramírez finished a five-hitter for the Dodgers. New York's Juan Soto, bothered by a sore left forearm, missed his first game of the season. Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 5 and was repeatedly booed.

Randy Gregory sues the NFL and the Broncos over $500K in fines for THC use he says was therapeutic

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Veteran pass rusher Randy Gregory is suing the NFL and the Denver Broncos over more than $500,000 in fines he received for using medications containing THC. Gregory's attorneys filed the lawsuit in Arapahoe County in suburban Denver. The complaint says Gregory was denied accommodations to use medicine containing THC to treat social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The NFL declined to comment on the lawsuit and so did the Broncos, for whom Gregory played in 2022 and 2023. The league's drug policies are collectively bargained with the players association and administered by a third party.

Dodgers' Kiké Hernández makes error in midst of live television interview during 2-1 win over Yanks

NEW YORK (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Kiké Hernández made an error while in the midst of a live television interview during a 2-1, 11-inning win over the New York Yankees. Hernández had a microphone and was speaking with Wayne Randazzo and former pitcher Dontrelle Willis on the Apple TV telecast in the second inning about Hernández's decision to wear colorful cleats and the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium when Hernández allowed Gleyber Torres' one-out grounder to bounce off his bare hand. After ball one to DJ LeMahieu on a pitch clock violation by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Hernández said: "What was the previous question, before I made that error?"

Foden, Wirtz and Yamal among the players who could light up Euro 2024

Phil Foden, Florian Wirtz, Lamine Yamal, Rafael Leao, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Heorhiy Sudakov and the enduring Luka Modric are some of the players who are expected to light up the European Championship in Germany. Young forwards Foden and Wirtz are coming off standout campaigns for Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen, respectively, in their runs to domestic titles. Leao and Yamal are two of the most exciting wingers in Europe. Kvaratskhelia is the blossoming superstar for tournament newcomer Georgia, and Sudakov is an inspiration behind war-torn Ukraine's qualification. The 38-year-old Modric might be playing in his last international tournament for Croatia.

Euro 2024 in Germany is UEFA's 1st step to raise pandemic-hit cash reserves above $550 million

GENEVA (AP) — UEFA has a two-step financial mission to refill its pandemic-hit cash reserves. It starts with a men's 2024 European Championship held in the home of the continent's largest economy. Revenue of about $2.7 billion is expected from broadcast and sponsor deals, and sales of tickets, hospitality packages and licensing from staging a 51-game tournament in Germany. UEFA forecast close to half its Euro 2024 income will be profit of about $1.3 billion. UEFA wants to refill reserves to its preferred level around $550 million. The second phase of achieving that is by sending Euro 2028 to the UK and Ireland.

Caitlin Clark says no apology is needed from Chennedy Carter for her flagrant foul

WASHINGTON (AP) — Caitlin Clark was asked before her game at Washington whether she thinks Chennedy Carter owes her a public apology. The rookie standout dismissed the idea. Clark says basketball is competitive and isn't going to be nice all the time. She says Carter is having a tremendous season so far. Clark then took the court and made a career-high seven 3-pointers in the Indiana Fever's 85-83 win over the Mystics. She equaled her career high with 30 points. Carter plays for the Chicago Sky. She knocked Clark to the floor prior an inbounds pass in a game last weekend.

Hinako Shibuno, who was runner-up last week to her Japanese countrywoman at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania, opened with a 66.
