BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Shedeur and Shilo Sanders aren't the only offspring of football coach Deion Sanders who are playing at the University of Colorado. So is his youngest child, daughter Shelomi, whose nickname is Bossy. She's a redshirt freshman point guard on the 20th-ranked Buffaloes women's basketball team. She says a healthy sibling rivalry meant the family competed in everything growing up. Not just in sports. They even completed she said to see who could say the best prayer on the way to school. She says that sibling rivalry is paying off in their respective sports.

When Deion Sanders arrived in Boulder to resurrect Colorado's slumbering football program he not only brought his sons&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deion-sanders-shedeur-colorado-buffaloes-20bdad5900bed0e75a2c2c61d1ddc96b">Sheduer</a>, a star quarterback, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deion-sanders-prime-shilo-colorado-5f9a4b22f74a93197cb071d55fbde74f">Shilo</a>, a star safety, but also his youngest child, Shelomi, a redshirt freshman point guard on the women's basketball team.

Shelomi goes by the nickname “Bossy,” a nod to the piloting personality she developed while growing up in a household full of ultra-competitive athletes and a famous father.

“Bossy?” women's hoops coach J.R. Payne asked. "Well, she hasn't been really bossy with us. But Shelomi is doing great. Shelomi came in the middle of the year last year, which is always difficult to transfer from one program to another. And the team loved her immediately. She's got a great personality. She works hard. She brings life to the party on a daily basis, so to speak.”

So, she's got some of her father's charisma.

“I just give out energy and you know, I’m always gonna smile, always gonna bring good vibes, always gonna laugh,” Bossy said. “That's just me being me.”

When Deion Sanders was asked about his youngest daughter at his weekly news conference followering a tough loss at Oregon, his eyes lit up.

“You've got to understand, my baby girl is my heart,” Coach Prime said. “I love all my kids, but I love them differently. Bossy is my baby girl. She's my heart. She has a witness protection program with her brothers. She don't ever date, she probably won't get married until she's about 40. They don't play.”

Sanders said he told Payne he would be happy to help recruit if his name might help and then gushed some more about his daughter — “just seeing her want it and go out there and work and put up 100 shots after practice on her own” — before pausing to note his unusual and beloved situation with his children on hand at Colorado with him.

“Even though we got an L, I don't consider it a loss when I get to watch my sons not only play on the field but I get to watch my son (Deion Sanders Jr.) film everything and edit it and put it out ... and I get to see my daughter come into my office and take a nap on the couch,” he said. "So I'm living a wonderful double life as a father and a coach and I love every minute of it.”

Sanders also asked what time the women's basetball team — which is ranked 20th and opens against national champion and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">top-ranked LSU</a>&nbsp;in Las Vegas next month — practiced and said he was going to have to drop by.

“I told him to just come to the games and sit with the other parents,” she said. “I don't want him coming to practice. I don't want to say I don't like the spotlight but I just want to be, like, in a sense, normal."

She knows that is an impossibility on a campus that has drawn&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/colorado-prime-deion-sanders-812245434d3291dd98caf0a6b9d86e10">a Hollywood-like scrutiny</a>&nbsp;thanks to her family's arrival last winter from Jackson State, an HBCU in Mississippi.

“We were always in the spotlight as kids, so there's not much of a difference,” Bossy said. “But there is, as well, just for the fact that we're at a Power Five and we're on the big stage. Everyone's looking at Colorado, at my brothers and my dad and what he's going to shape this program to be. So, I don't really have the words for it. It's just a really cool experience watching it all happen in front of my eyes just turning things around.

“I mean, it was kind of the same at Jackson and how we turned around the program, but it's on a bigger platform now.”

Deion Sanders' oldest daughter, Deiondra, is 31 and lives in Atlanta. Deion Jr., a.k.a “Bucky,” who played football at SMU and who runs the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/welloffforever/">“Well Off Forever”</a>&nbsp;brand on Instagram and YouTube, which often promotes the Buffaloes, is 29.

Bossy, who's 19, grew up competing mostly with Shilo, 23, and Shedeur, 21.

“We all kind of played the same sports,” Bossy said. "I like to say I was the best athlete of the family. I was. I played a little football back in the day. They played basketball, too. I feel like it made me tougher competing with them. It was always competition in the house. It started from who could pray the best.”

That's not a typo. She said pray, not play.

On the way to school, she explained, one of the siblings would lead the family prayer. So, they'd look out the window and thank God for the blue sky and the green grass and for that puppy on a walk over there.

When Bossy was finished, she'd turn to her brothers and issue the challenge, “Beat that!” And the next day Shilo or Shedeur would try to do just that.

“It was just a competition with us in everything," Bossy said. “Yeah, even in prayer. I'm surprised my dad hasn't told that story yet.”

🏈Kansas vs. No. 6 Oklahoma Set for National Spotlight on Homecoming

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Mark Francis, the winningest and longest tenured head coach in Kansas soccer history, announced his retirement on Tuesday after 25 seasons and more than 500 games leading the Jayhawks. Francis led Kansas to 262 victories, nine NCAA Tournament appearances, two Sweet 16s, one Big 12 regular-season title and one Big 12 Tournament Championship.

Francis finished his illustrious career at Kansas with a record of 262-200-49 (.561).

“We are grateful for Mark’s outstanding tenure and for his profound impact on Kansas Soccer,” Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff said. “He has represented our University community in an exceptional manner, winning at a high level and supporting the graduation of countless outstanding Jayhawks. Because of the strong foundation he built, and the energy around women’s soccer in our region, the future of Kansas Soccer is very bright.”

Francis was named the third head soccer coach in the program’s history on December 22, 1998. In his first season at KU in 1999, Francis led the team to a school record with eight wins and the program’s first-ever ranking on Oct. 11, 1999. Over the course of his 25-year career at Kansas, Francis posted 16 winning seasons, including an 18-5 mark in 2004 and a 17-5-3 record in 2019, leading both of those teams to a Big 12 title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 2020, the program achieved its highest ranking ever at No. 5 by the United Soccer Coaches.

“Its been a privilege to be the leader of this program for the last 25 years,” Francis said. “I want to thank our current team and all of our alumni that I had the privilege to coach, my former and current assistant coaches and support staff, especially (Associate Head Coach) Kelly Miller who has been here with me the whole time.”

Francis was assisted all 25 seasons by Miller. Miller served as the goalkeepers coach and mentored several standout Jayhawks, including Sarah Peters, Julie Hanley, Kat Liebetrau and Kaitlyn Stroud. Miller, who was a part of all nine NCAA Tournament appearances, also trained two-time All-American Holly Gault, NWSL player Estelle Johnson and Caroline Van Slambrouck who has played in the NWSL, Sweden, Iceland and Spain.

In his time at Kansas, Francis coached 75 all-conference selections, 31 All-Central Region recipients, five All-Americans, four freshman All-Americans, two Big 12 Defenders of the Year, one Big 12 Rookie of the Year, 263 academic all-conference honorees, four academic All-Americans and has seen 22 Jayhawks go on to play professional soccer, including five NWSL draft picks.

Francis guided KU to 15 double-digit win seasons in his tenure. The 2004 Big 12 Coach of the Year, Francis coached in more than 230 Big 12 soccer games, which is the most of any coach in the conference’s history. His 25 years in the Big 12 Conference marked the longest tenured head coach in league history as well.

Francis, who received Central Region Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2004, has been coaching soccer for 33 seasons, between the Division I, junior college, USISL and high school levels, with 28 of those years coming at the Division I level. Prior to his 25 seasons at Kansas, Francis was the head coach at South Alabama (1996-98); at the Mobile Revelers (1997); at Brookhaven College (1995); and got his start at Highland Park (Texas) High School (1991-95). His Division I record finishes at 295-225-50 (.561).

The London, England, native and 1987 graduate of SMU was a three-time All-American selection for the Mustangs. As a senior, he was named SMU’s Male Athlete of the Year, the Dallas All-Sports Association College Athlete of the Year and was selected to Soccer America’s All-College MVP Team. In addition, he was a two-time nominee for the Hermann Trophy, given to the nation’s most outstanding soccer player.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Kansas redshirt-senior Kevin McCullar Jr. is one of 20 named to the 2024 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.

Named Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, McCullar is on the preseason team for the second-straight season as he was also an honorable mention selection in 2022-23. The San Antonio guard is a three-time All-Big 12 selection, with two coming while at Texas Tech and an all-conference third-team honoree while at Kansas last season. McCullar has been a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist in 2021-22 and 2022-23 and was on the Big 12 All-Defensive team last season.

In 2022-23, McCullar averaged 10.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and was third in the Big 12 with seven double-doubles. A 2023 KU graduate, McCullar enters 2023-24 with 1,040 points, 589 rebounds, 231 assists and 178 steals for his career.

Named after the 1972 NBA Finals Champion and 14-time NBA All-Star Jerry West, the annual honor in its 10th year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, October 27. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Jerry West Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2024 Jerry West Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women’s Starting Five. Last season, KU’s Jalen Wilson won the 2023 Julius Erving Award.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Corbin Carroll went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and the Arizona Diamondbacks advanced to the World Series for the first time in 22 years by stunning the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in Game 7 of the NL Championship Series. Arizona plays the Texas Rangers in the World Series, with Game 1 set for Friday night at Globe Life Field. In their only other trip to the Fall Classic, the Diamondbacks beat the New York Yankees in a seven-game thriller in 2001. The young Diamondbacks, who at 84-78 squeezed into the playoffs as the final National League wild card, completed their comeback from an 0-2 hole in the NLCS by taking early leads in Games 6 and 7 to win the final two in Philadelphia.

The Rangers wrapped up a seven-game AL Championship Series with an 11-4 win Monday against the Houston Astros, last year's world champs. Texas now hosts Game 1 of the Word Series against Arizona on Friday night. That will be 12 years to the date after Game 6 when the Cardinals were twice down to their final strike. St. Louis beat Texas in 11 innings, then finished off the World series the next night.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Three people with direct knowledge of the situation say the San Francisco Giants have hired manager Bob Melvin away from the division rival San Diego Padres. Melvin will be returning to the Bay Area where he grew up, played for the Giants and then managed the Oakland Athletics from 2011-21. He leaves San Diego with a year on his contract amid reports of friction with general manager A.J. Preller.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City and Philadelphia are setting the stage for the possibility of a rare Super Bowl rematch. The Chiefs and Eagles have both won six of their first seven games and are tied for the best record in the NFL. This is just the sixth time that the two teams that played in the Super Bowl the previous season are tied for the best record in the NFL entering Week 8 or later. One of the previous times it happened was 1993 with Buffalo and Dallas on the way to the only Super Bowl rematch.

UNDATED (AP) — Freshmen are making some significant contributions in the Big 12 this season. Kansas State's Avery Johnson and Iowa State's Rocco Becht have their teams in the hunt for a spot in the league championship game. Both teams are in a second-place logjam with Texas and Oklahoma State, just behind Oklahoma. Johnson matched a school record with five rushing touchdowns two weeks ago against Texas Tech, then had a TD pass and another impressive rushing effort in a win over TCU. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says quarterback Quinn Ewers is week to week with an injury to his throwing shoulder. Maalik Murphy is likely to start for No. 7 Texas this week against BYU. Sarkisian says Murphy and top recruit Arch Manning will get snaps in practice to prepare for the game. Murphy finished Texas’ 31-24 victory over Houston after Ewers left the game in the third quarter. Ewers had his right arm in a sling by the time he left the stadium.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon and Liberty turned in the top individual and team rushing performances of the season for games matching Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Gordon carried 29 times for 282 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-34 win over West Virginia. It was his fourth straight game over 100 yards and the Cowboys’ top rushing total since Chuba Hubbard had 296 yards against Kansas State in 2019. Liberty ran for 401 yards in a 42-35 win over Middle Tennessee State. It was the Flames’ best rushing total since 2012.

WACO, Texas (AP) — A federal jury has found Baylor University negligent in a Title IX lawsuit and awarded $270,000 to a former student who alleged she was physically abused by a football player in 2014. The verdict Tuesday centered on a period of wide-ranging scandal at the nation’s biggest Baptist school. Jurors in a Waco courtroom held that Baylor “maintained a policy of deliberate indifference to reports of sexual harassment” that put former student Delores Lozano at risk. UNDATED (AP) — Tickets for the last two Southeastern Conference championship games were purchased in the name of a suspended Michigan football staffer who is the focus of an NCAA investigation into an alleged sign-stealing scheme. That's according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to speak publicly about an open NCAA investigation. The person says electronic records revealed Connor Stalions bought tickets to the games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Records also show Stalions purchased tickets to games involving multiple Big Ten schools.

HOBBS, New Mexico — The No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team closed out the fall season on Tuesday with an eighth-place showing at the NJCAA National Preview.&nbsp;

Playing on the same course – Rockwood Community Links in Hobbs, New Mexico – as the 2024 NJCAA Division I Championships, the Blue Dragons shot a combined 17-over 869 over the last two days.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons had rounds of 291 and 292 on Monday before posting a 286 on Tuesday to close out the tournament. &nbsp;

Hutchinson finished 14 strokes off the pace of team champion Odessa (282-292-281), which won the tournament by two strokes with a 54-hole team score of 855. Runner-up Dodge City shot an 857 and Midland finished third at 869.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons had two players finish in the individual Top 20. &nbsp;

Redshirt freshman Louis Ross was the only Blue Dragon to finish in the individual Top 20. Ross tied for 11th with a 1-over 214 on the par-71 course. Ross had rounds of 70 and 72 on Monday and closed with a 72 on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Sophomore Marco Anderson, who played as an individual player, tied for 21st overall. Anderson shot 216 after arounds of 75, a career-low 69 and a 72.&nbsp;

Freshman Micah Blowers tied for 26th at 217. Blowers carded rounds of 73, 73 and 71.&nbsp;

Sophomore Louis Galvin tied for 30th at 218. He posted rounds of 75, 72 and 71.&nbsp;

Brown improved his nation-leading quarterback sack total to 13 with three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against the Busters.&nbsp;

Brown finished with six total tackles, including five solo stops. Brown has had eight sacks in the last three games. He leads the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss.&nbsp;

Brown is the fourth Blue Dragon to be named the conference’s player of the week. Jordan Scruggs and Ryan Nolan have each won the award once this season. Brown is the 13th overall Blue Dragon to earn weekly conference honors.&nbsp;

Just like his nickname, freshman Avery Johnson is shining in Kansas State's offense.

The dual-threat quarterback dubbed “Sunshine” matched a school record with five rushing touchdowns two weeks ago against Texas Tech, then had a TD pass and another impressive showing on the ground in a blowout win over TCU.

Johnson is among four freshmen quarterbacks in the Big 12 getting significant snaps this season. He and Iowa State's Rocco Becht have their teams in a second-place logjam with No. 7 Texas and Oklahoma State at 3-1, behind No. 6 Oklahoma (4-0).

Johnson's long, golden locks, his infectious personality and solid play earned him that nickname after Kip Pardue’s quarterback character in the 2000 film “Remember The Titans.” Johnson welcomes the moniker with a sheepish smile as well as his significant role in K-State's offense alongside veteran Will Howard.

“At the end of the day, I don’t really care how it gets done, as long as we come out with the win when the clocks hit zero,” Johnson said.

Coach Chris Klieman has made it clear that while Howard is Kansas State's unquestioned leader on offense, the speedy Johnson is a valuable addition. Kansas State has won two straight after starting the season 3-2 that included a loss at Oklahoma State.

“We’re going to need both of those guys as we still have a lot of football left,” Klieman said.

Johnson carried 16 times for 73 yards against TCU as Kansas State amassed 343 rushing yards. Johnson connected on long passes with fellow freshman Jayce Brown on separate drives to set up scores, and Brown later had his first career touchdown catch from Howard.

“That’s my brother," Johnson said. "We came in here at the same time. He’s a shy guy at first. Once he came out of his shell, we kind of got to bond on and off the field. Credit to him. He’s putting in all the work.”

Becht, a redshirt freshman who saw limited action in three games a year ago, was thrust into the starting role at Iowa State after incumbent Hunter Dekkers, who has not played this season, pleaded guilty to underage gambling in September. Following a 2-3 start, the Cyclones have consecutive wins over TCU and Cincinnati and are coming off a bye week.

“It’s just staying the course and staying consistent,” said Becht, whose father Anthony Becht, played 12 NFL seasons at tight end out of West Virginia. “We’ll be prepared and we’re ready for the competition that’s coming to us.”

Becht is averaging 209 passing yards per game and has thrown 12 TD passes along with five interceptions. He already has the second-most TD passes in a season for an Iowa State freshman and is on pace to exceed the freshman record for yards (2,250) and TDs (16) set by Brock Purdy in 2018.

“Rocco’s growing a lot for a redshirt freshman and a guy that’s seeing all these things for the first time,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “I think his maturity is showing. How his preparation (is), how he handles in-game adjustments, he’s really doing a great job for us.”

Big 12 youngsters are excelling in other positions, too. Three of them will be taking their talents to the Southeastern Conference next season.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Nic Anderson of Oklahoma has eight receiving touchdowns, the most for a freshman in the Bowl Subdivision. Teammate Peyton Bowen, a freshman strong safety, has blocked two punts — one for a safety — and leads the Sooners with four pass breakups. Texas freshman linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. is tied for the team high with three sacks.

Texas Tech redshirt freshman linebacker Ben Roberts is fourth in the Big 12 with 66 tackles and has two forced fumbles. Oklahoma State redshirt freshman safety Cameron Epps had two interceptions earlier this month against Kansas State, returning one for a touchdown.

West Virginia redshirt freshman Hudson Clement had 177 receiving yards and three TDs in a breakout debut against FCS Duquesne last month, then had a 50-yard TD catch two weeks ago against Houston.

TCU quarterback Josh Hoover had quite the first start Oct. 14 after an injury to Chandler Morris, throwing for 439 yards and four TDs in a win over BYU. Coach Sonny Dykes said at the time that Hoover “set the bar pretty high” and that “it's going to be hard to replicate what he did.”

Dykes was right. Hoover, a redshirt freshman, was limited to 187 yards against Kansas State.

"It was a rough game across-the-board offensively,” Dykes said Saturday.

At Texas Tech, freshman Jake Strong was put in a difficult situation.

The Red Raiders' third quarterback this season, Strong made his debut Oct. 14 against Kansas State after Behren Morton was injured. Strong had a 54-yard run to set up his 8-yard TD pass that gave Texas Tech the lead. But he threw three interceptions late in the loss and had three more picks in his first start in a loss to BYU.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Coming off a game in which Kansas State rushed for 343 yards and produced 587 total yards of <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/7e0ea71a-cf74-4a1e-b037-2f3d65d76ae2">offense in a 41-3 victory over TCU</a>, senior left guard Cooper Beebe has been named the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Tuesday.

It is the first time this year Beebe has earned a weekly national award as, for the first time, the FWAA is selecting an Outland Trophy National Player of the Week as part of the National College Football Awards Association weekly national honors from 12 awards. Following the UCF game earlier this season, running back DJ Giddens was named the Doak Walker Award National Running Back of the Week.

Beebe pushed his streak without allowing a sack to 36 games and 1,041 pass blocking plays, which dates back to the Iowa State contest in 2020 (according to Pro Football Focus). He made his 42nd career start against the Horned Frogs, including his 39th-straight start, the most by an active player on this year's team. His 42 career starts are three shy of entering the top five among K-State offensive linemen since 1990.

The 587 yards of total offense against TCU was the sixth-most in school history but the highest amount ever for the Wildcats in a conference game. K-State had 406 yards at halftime, its most in a single half since at least 1999. It was the third time this year K-State had over 500 yards of offense as they had 588 yards in the season opener against SEMO – the fifth most in school history – and 536 yards against UCF. The two conference games with 500 or more yards of offense are the most by a K-State team since 2014, while the three overall games are the most since 2003.

K-State enters this week's game against Houston ranked third nationally in rushing yards per game (232.7) and 13th in both yards per game (474.7) and points per game (36.9), while all three marks rank in the top six in school history in those respective categories. The Wildcats are also averaging 6.49 yards per play, which is currently the top mark in program history.

Kansas State hosts Big 12 newcomer Houston on Saturday in the Wildcats' Homecoming game inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Kickoff against the Cougars is slated for 11 a.m., and the game will be shown on ESPN2.

Zach Edey waited until nearly the last second to decide whether he should leave for the NBA or return to Purdue for another season.

Not completely sure what he wanted to do, the reigning national player of the year picked up the phone to talk with his mother and agent. Their response: do what's going to make you the happiest.

“It was a no-brainer that I'd come back to Purdue at that point,” Edey said. ”I get to come back to great teammates, a university that loves me, to compete for every championship that's out there. That's something you don't get very often and something I didn't want to pass up.”

Edey's decision made it easy for Associated Press Top 25 men's basketball poll voters who picked the preseason All-America team.

The Boilermakers' towering center was the lone unanimous pick by a 60-person media panel on the team released Monday. Edey was joined by Marquette guard Tyler Kolek, Kansas center Hunter Dickinson, Duke big man Kyle Filipowski and North Carolina forward Armando Bacot.

Edey had a dominating 2022-23 season to sweep all the major national player of the year awards, including AP. The 7-foot-4, 300-pound center averaged 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 60.7 percent from the field.

Edey's return was a big reason Purdue is ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll. The extra year gives him more time to improve his NBA draft stock, but also perhaps get a bit of redemption after the Boilermakers became just the second No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 in the NCAA Tournament with last spring's loss to Fairleigh Dickinson.

Edey is the second straight AP player of the year to return for another season, following Kentucky's Oscar Tschiebwe in 2021-22.

“He is an NBA player, but he has to prove that. He has to knock down that threshold,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “It’s no different than buying a house. There’s just not a lot of comps out there for him. Normally when you buy a house, you find the five comps and get to your price. That’s how they kind of gauge that. Well, he doesn’t have that.”
