The Wind Surge took an early one run lead in the bottom of the second. Ben Ross came to the plate with a runner on third and two outs. The count was full when he hit a soft ground ball straight up the middle and hustled to first for a clutch RBI single.

Midland tied the ballgame up after going scoreless in their first six innings. Brayan Buelvas hit a solo home run for the RockHounds on a fly ball to left center field.

Midland took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. William Simoneit hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to center field. A run was able to reach home and the RockHounds had a one run lead.

Pierson Ohl made his 14th start on the mound for the Wind Surge this season. He pitched five and one third scoreless innings where he only gave up three hits. He struck out five batters and walked one. Sean Mooney was credited with the loss in his first decision of the year and his record falls to (0-1).

The Corpus Christi Hooks starting pitcher Jack Perkins pitched six innings. He gave up one run off four hits. Perkins struck out six batters and walked two. Jasseel De La Cruz earned the win.

The Wichita Wind Surge fell to (34-31, 62-71) and the Midland RockHounds improved to (36-29, 68-66).

CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Massey homered for the second straight game, Salvador Perez had three hits and two RBIs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-1 on Wednesday night. Four pitchers combined to limit Chicago to one run on five hits while striking out nine. Kansas City won its second straight against Chicago and took the season series 7-6. Rookie Steven Cruz opened with two scoreless, two-hit innings. Fellow rookie Alec Marsh (1-8) followed, allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings for his first major league victory. James McArthur got five outs, and Tucker Davidson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. Mike Clevinger (7-8) was the loser.

Four pitchers combined to limit Chicago to one run on five hits while striking out nine. Kansas City won its second straight against Chicago and took the season series 7-6.

Rookie Steven Cruz opened with two scoreless, two-hit innings in his first career start. Fellow rookie Alec Marsh (1-8) followed, allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings for his first major league victory.

“That was probably the best we've seen with him as far as his execution of pitches, the quality the shape of the pitched, the competitiveness,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said.

James McArthur got five outs, and Tucker Davidson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win for Marsh, who pitched in his 14th game. The 25-year-old righty started eight of them since being recalled from Omaha and making his debut June 30.

“To see the things I've been working on, to see it come together was amazing” said Marsh, who added teammates “didn't let up on him” in a postgame celebration.

Massey has six homers and 17 RBIs in 19 career games against the White Sox, a team he rooted for while growing up in the Chicago suburb of Palos Park, Illinois. The 25-year-old infielder has 13 homers this year, his second in the majors, and 17 total so far in his career.

As usual, Massey had group of family and friends cheering him on during the series on the South Side.

“I've gone back and forth, like, `If I'm doing it against these guys, what have I got to change against other teams?'" Massey said. “Again, I think it always comes down to just my family's here and being comfortable with them the whole week.”

Chicago starter Mike Clevinger (7-8) allowed two runs — on Massey’s drive in the second — and six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven and didn't give up a walk.

“Six innings, two runs, made one mistake,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “Paid for it with Massey, but overall this is another good start for him.”

Nick Loftin drove in two runs, with a single and double, after entering as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

Loftin, Perez and Bobby Witt, Jr. had RBIs in the seventh for the Royals, whose 46—101 record is the worst in the majors. The White Sox have the fourth-worst mark at 56-90. Both teams have been eliminated from the postseason.

Massey hit Clevinger’s 1-0 fastball into the right-field bullpen in the second to put Kansas City ahead 2-0.

Loftin and Perez each had an RBI single in the seventh as Kansas City scored three-runs off relievers Aaron Bummer and Lane Ramsey to take a 5-0 lead. Witt drove in a run with a sac fly.

Through the first six innings, Chicago advanced only two runners as far as second base.

The White Sox broke through in the seventh. Yoán Moncada led off with a double, then advanced to third on Andrew Vaughn's infield hit and scored when Witt threw wildly on Yasmani Grandal's grounder to shortstop.

Loftin and Perez drove in runs in the ninth.

The Milwaukee native struck out Gavin Sheets to cap a 13-pitch at bat for the first out of the seventh before McArthur took over and got Elvis Andrus to ground into a double-play.

“I think it was the longest at-bat of my career," Marsh said. “It was a battle the whole time.”

Royals: Had not yet named a starter to face Houston RHP Cristian Javier (9-3, 4.78) at Kansas City on Friday.

White Sox: Will send RHP José Ureña (0-5, 8.46) to face Minnesota RHP Kenta Maeda (4-7, 4.65) in Chicago on Thursday to open a four-game series.

The use of collaborative replay has gone from experimental several years ago to essential at the top levels of college football. It has officials in a centralized location consult with stadium officials in making the review. The ACC recently opened its expanded operations at its new headquarters in Charlotte. League supervisor of football officials Alberto Riveron says officials are using technology to make sure officials catch any "egregious mistake" with an incorrect call.

NBA takes steps to try to ensure its star players appear in more games

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has taken steps to try to ensure that its star players appear in more games, particularly nationally televised matchups and the in-season tournament that is being added this year. The league's board of governors has approved a new player participation policy that will take effect for this upcoming season, replacing the player resting policy that was implemented prior to the 2017-18 season. The new rules focus primarily on star players — someone who has been an All-Star or on the All-NBA team in any of the prior three seasons. Teams will have to manage their rosters to ensure that multiple available star players aren't sitting out the same game to rest.

For as long as Heath Gerstner and Rick Sabath have been around high school baseball in Kansas, as players and coaches, the topic has been a source of contention.

“Why can’t Kansas play more games?”

Since 1965, high school baseball and softball teams in Kansas have been limited to a maximum of 20 regular-season games. In the nearly 60 years since, efforts to extend the season were shot down, most recently last April when Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors voted 33-32 to maintain the status quo.

“I think there’s a lot of challenges any time there’s change,” said Gerstner, who not only is the head baseball coach at McPherson but also has been the president of the KABC for the past four years. “To see the good at the end is sometimes difficult and there’s so many points of view out there with big schools and small schools, baseball programs with 60 kids involved and programs with 11 kids involved. To find a way to allow all of those programs the opportunity to play in more games was important.”

Dejected, but undeterred by past rejections, the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches didn’t go back to the drawing board. Instead, it took some feedback from the board and joined forces with the state’s softball coaches to try and elicit change.

On Wednesday, change finally occurred. At the KSHSAA’s first Board of Directors meeting of the 2023-24 school year, the proposal to increase the maximum number of baseball and softball games allowed during the regular season again was up for vote.

And this time, it had more than enough momentum and support to pass.

With a 42-17 vote in baseball and 48-11 vote in softball, high school teams may now play up to 26 regular season games. The change is effective immediately.

“I think we finally did what’s best for kids,” Gerstner said. “Our players deserve more games and we’re excited.”Sabath, who began coaching in the college ranks at various stops in Kansas before taking over at Olathe West when the school opened, said the process has been a long time coming. And one many involved with the KABC weren’t sure would ever come.

“This has been a passion of ours for a long time,” said Sabath, who takes over at St. Thomas Aquinas this spring as head coach. “We were told it would never happen. To see it happen today is so fulfilling for all of us and all the guys in the past who tried to get this done.”

The proposal to increase the maximum number of games was put forth by the Sunflower League and Olathe West athletic director Pat Butler made a brief presentation on behalf of the league. In his presentation, Butler made a simple rationale.

“Kansas lags behind, really the rest of the country, but specifically the states that surround us,” Butler said.

The numbers back up that claim. Nebraska allows its high school baseball and softball teams to play more than 30 games. Missouri allows 26. Oklahoma 37. Iowa 40.In addition, he presented numbers on the percentage of games played at the high school level compared with the college level. Where basketball plays roughly 67% of a collegiate schedule, soccer plays around 80% and volleyball is over 90%, baseball and softball have a schedule that is closer to 40% of the collegiate slate.

“It’s not really just about the volume of games,” Butler said. “But the opportunities those games can provide our kids and programs – to maybe play in tournaments, leave their league and move around the state and play a bit, all unique things we want to provide our kids.”

Gerstner said the KABC has been working on extending the season for quite some time now, and when the 2020 season was canceled for COVID concerns it drove home that desire even more. The proposal had the backing of 90% of the state’s baseball coaches.

Butler and Sunflower League colleagues Todd Dain, principal at Shawnee Mission South, and Jay Novacek, principal at Olathe West – who officially put the proposal to the vote -- also expressed concerns about the lure of club sports of elite athletes in both baseball and softball, particularly in the metro area.

“I would argue that high school sports, particularly baseball and softball, are under attack at times from club sports,” Butler said. “We need to continue to provide new opportunities, more opportunities for our athletes. We want to protect our high school programs and this is the opportunity to do that.”

“We want to promote our sports because we believe that’s where it’s at,” Novacek said. “It teaches life lessons and builds life-long relationships. We would hate to lose those.”

Discussion on the floor after both Butler and Gerstner spoke in favor of the proposal raised questions about the number of games involving the loss of instructional time being raised from 13 to 20 games. Paola principal Jeff Hines also presented a counter-argument about the impact of an increase in baseball and softball games on other sports and activities.

“I both appreciate and admire the passion that the baseball coaches have expressed in support of this,” Hines said. “However, we need to promote the belief system as school administrators and members of the board of directors that all activities that we offer at our member schools are important. We have a duty to make sure that one sport or activity doesn’t take precedence.”

Hines cited the addition of preseason jamborees for baseball and softball this season as well as the addition of a preseason arm-care conditioning throwing program for baseball pitchers as new amenities already afforded the sport. He also raised concerns about conflicts for dual-sport or dual-activity student-athletes during a spring schedule loaded with various state competitions such as forensics and music.

“For us to figure out how to make all those things interact and not make baseball more important or less important is difficult,” Hines said.

Horton principal Larry Mills also levied concerns from smaller schools that already battle low numbers, and in particular, pitchers currently that would be taxed even more by an increased schedule.

Gerstner said he understood such concerns.

“We’re allowing 26 games, not making it mandatory,” he said. “We’re neighboring schools with Little River and they may not think that 26 games fits their personnel, where it does us.”

After the pro/con discussion, the vote was held and it was overwhelmingly in support of increasing the maximum to 26 games for both baseball and softball.

“I’m super-excited with the decision today,” Gerstner said. “I think it all came down to the aspect that you’re not required to play the 26. You look at the postseasons now and you’ve got teams going into regionals with 17 games even though it says play 20. Games get pushed back, rainouts happen, it’s difficult. Now with 26, if you get rained out, you still get 23, 24 games.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

KSHSAA Board of Directors approves increase in games for baseball, softball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Given another chance, Chris Jones acknowledged Wednesday that he would have changed the way he approached his holdout with the Kansas City Chiefs, which the All-Pro defensive tackle carried through the offseason, training camp and preseason right through their season-opening loss to the Detroit Lions.

Exactly how would he change it? Jones didn't really say.

"When you have a lot of new guys, it's kind of tough to be away, especially in the defensive line room," said Jones, who was back at practice two days after agreeing to a reworked one-year deal that could amount to a raise if certain incentives are hit.

"These are the decisions you have to live with," he continued. "I would change it, but I'm grateful for how it turned out."

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he expects Jones to be on the field in some capacity Sunday in Jacksonville.

"He's an important part of it and you know, I'm glad he's back. We'll just see where he's at physically as we go," Reid said. "He normally keeps himself in pretty good shape. We'll see how he does out there."

Jones spent the Chiefs' opener against Detroit last Thursday watching from a suite — his suite.

It wasn't exactly a view he enjoyed, either, as Kansas City stumbled to a 21-20 loss. Jones was powerless to help his teammates after they celebrated their latest Super Bowl triumph with a pregame banner-raising ceremony, and he mostly spent the game "biting my nails" and feeling like the other 80,000-some fans jammed into Arrowhead Stadium.

"It all felt crazy," Jones said. "First time I ever sat in my suite. I see what I pay so much money for. Food was amazing. But it was a different viewpoint. I could see from a fan's viewpoint how stressful it is."

It's been a stressful offseason for the Chiefs, who have been trying to reach an agreement with Jones on a long-term deal; he is finishing a four-year, $80 million pact.

But the sides were never close, and as negotiations dragged on, Jones racked up millions in fines for missing mandatory minicamp, training camp and the preseason. He also forfeited his Week 1 game check.

Jones said his reworked contract allows him to recoup the fines, but did not discuss the details of it. He also said that he would not continue negotiations during the season but was open to revisiting them once it is complete.

"I don't want to go back and forth during the season," Jones said. "My focus right now is being the best me I can be for this team; being the best player on this defense, the best player in the league. Anything less than that is a disappointment to myself."

Jones also said he wasn't necessarily trying to become the league's highest-paid defensive tackle. That honor that currently belongs to the Rams' Aaron Donald, who is playing on a three-year, $96 million contract.

"Not at all," he said. "Is it important to be the best at my position? Absolutely."

There's an argument to be made that Jones was exactly that last season. He had 15 1/2 sacks to match the best season of his career, picked up his first postseason sacks and won his second Super Bowl ring in the past four years.

His ability to produce pressure from the interior of the line is unique, and it was sorely missing in the Chiefs' loss to the Lions. They were already playing without defensive end Charles Omenihu, who is serving a six-game suspension handed down by the NFL, and wound up sacking Detroit's Jared Goff just once.

Goes without saying that the group up front will need to do better against Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on Sunday.

Just how much Jones will play in Jacksonville remains to be seen, but he was welcomed back Wednesday by a Kansas City locker room that consistently said throughout the offseason that it would stay out of his business.

"Happy to have him. Chris is not only a great player but a great person in the locker room," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "Always has a smile on his face. Like I said early in training camp, whenever he gets back here, we're going to welcome him with open arms, and now we're going to try to get out there and get a win."

NOTES: TE Travis Kelce was back at practice after hyperextending his knee last week. He missed the game against Detroit but Reid was optimistic he will be available in Jacksonville. "It's like Chris. They're good football players. We welcome them back in and we go," Reid said, "but on the other hand, I expect the other guys to step up and do the job."

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— The Wichita State University men's basketball program received an in-state commitment on Wednesday morning, as Wichita Heights product T.J. Williams posted the news on his X account.

Williams is currently a senior at Wichita Heights High School and is a top-150 recruit according to numerous national media outlets. Williams is listed at 6-foot-4, 175 pounds. He held offers from Indiana State, Iowa, Missouri, North Texas, SMU, Tennessee, Texas A&amp;M and Texas Tech.

According to 247sports' Eric Bossi, Williams is "one of the more explosive wing players in the class of 2024, Williams is at his best when he's playing in attack mode and attacking the rim. He isn't a flashy ball handler but gets where he needs to go off of the dribble and is also a clever passer and playmaker who does a good job of reading ball screens. His jump shot is hot and cold so as he gets more consistent there he can really free up space to attack even more off the dribble. With his length and lateral quickness, he has the tools to be an excellent defender."

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Former NFL receiver Mike Williams, who was injured in a construction accident two weeks ago and later put on a ventilator, has died at the age of 36. Agent Hadley Engelhard says Williams died Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Bay Times reported that Williams was injured at a construction site in Hillsborough County and removed from life support on Thursday. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2014. Williams was a fourth-round draft pick of the Bucs following a standout college career at Syracuse. He had 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie. The Buffalo native spent four seasons with the Bucs before playing one year with his hometown Bills.

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wind Surge returned to Riverfront to play their last home series opener of the regular season. They got off to a slow start and did not score a run until the sixth inning. The RockHounds were able to string together a few innings where they drove in a couple of runs and they defeated the Wind Surge by a score of 5-2. Midland now leads the series one game to none.

Midland jumped out to an early two-run lead. In the top of the third, Cooper Bowman hit a sharp ground ball to center field for an RBI single. In the top of the fourth, Shane McGuire hit a solo home run over the right-center field wall.

The RockHounds hit their second home run of the night and extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Jonny Butler hit a two-run home run over the right-center field wall.

Wichita scored their first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth. Patrick Winkel hit a lead-off single and Alex Isola followed him up with his own single for back-to-back hits. Aaron Sabato loaded the bases with a single of his own. Ben Ross then stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Winkel to reach home.

The RockHounds extended their lead by a run in the top of the eighth. Caeden Trenkle reached first base on a fielding error by the Surge infield and that allowed Lazaro Armenteros to reach home.

The Wind Surge threatened in the bottom of the ninth. They were able to score a run off a Yoyner Fajardo RBI single and had more runners on base. The RockHounds ended the rally with a double play to end the ballgame.

Chris Paddack started on the mound in a Wind Surge jersey for the first time this season. He joins the team as part of his rehab assignment for the Minnesota Twins after recovering from Tommy John surgery. He pitched four innings where he gave up two runs off four hits. Paddack struck out six batters and walked nobody. He was credited with the loss and his record fell to (0-1).

The Corpus Christi Hooks starting pitcher Royber Salinas pitched four scoreless innings where he gave up three hits. He struck out four batters and walked two more.

The Wichita Wind Surge fell to (34-30, 62-70) and the Midland RockHounds improved to (35-29, 67-66).

⚾ Wind Surge offensive struggles continue at home

CHICAGO (AP) — Maikel García hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning after Kansas City wasted a nine-run lead, and the Royals hung on to beat the Chicago White Sox 11-10 on Tuesday night for a doubleheader split.

Chicago took the opener 6-2 as Dylan Cease won consecutive decisions for just the third time and the White Sox ended a strange run of losses when their pitchers struck out 14 or more — Chicago had been 0-11 this year.

Kansas City, a major league-worst 45-101, has lost at least 100 games for the third time in six seasons and with 16 games left could break the team record of 106, set in 2005. The Royals had not lost when leading by nine runs since a 15-13 defeat to Cleveland on Aug. 23, 2006, when Kansas City led 10-1 after the first inning.

“Give our guys credit. When they tied it up there, that’s a really demoralizing inning,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “For them to bounce back and score again … that’s a lot for them to do.”

Logan Porter capped a four-run first inning in the second game with an RBI single, Michael Massey hit a three-run homer in a four-run second and Salvador Perez hit his second RBI single of the game in the third as the Royals built a 9-0 lead.

Eloy Jiménez started Chicago’s comeback with a fifth-inning homer against Jordan Lyles, and Gavin Sheets hit a three-run double off Taylor Clarke (3-5) in an eight-run sixth, then tied the score 9-9 when he scored on Lenyn Sosa’s sacrifice fly.

“It was a really good inning for us,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “But those are the games we’ve got to close out.”

García put the Royals back in front 10-9 with his single off Deivi García (0-1), who made his White Sox debut after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees. Bobby Witt Jr. added a sacrifice fly in the ninth against Michael Kopech.

“We knew that we needed to get to their bullpen and were successful at doing that,” García said through a translator after ending an 0-for-20 skid.

Luis Robert hit into a run-scoring forceout in the ninth against Carlos Hernández, who got his fourth save in nine chances when Jiménez hit into a game-ending forceout.

White Sox starter Touki Toussaint gave up eight runs, matching a career high, and six hits while throwing 46 pitches and getting just three outs. Lyles, whose 16 losses top the major leagues, allowed seven runs and seven hits in five innings.

Cease (7-7) allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk. Bryan Shaw struck out three over 1 2/3 innings, Lane Ramsey one and Gregory Santos two in a perfect ninth for his fifth save in nine chances.

“Today was solid,” Cease said. “I thought I commanded the ball well and mixed it up good and the defense and offense played well.”

Cease’s only other consecutive winning decisions this year were April 5 and 10, and May 23 and July 16 — with eight no-decisions in between.

Chicago took a 5-0 lead in the first against Brady Singer (8-11), who dropped to 0-3 in his last four starts. Jiménez and Yoán Moncada hit RBI singles, Sheets had a two-run single and Elvis Andrus grounded into a run-scoring forceout.

“I just struggled there in the first,” Singer said. “Command was pretty bad. Quite a bit of damage there.”

Witt was 3 for 3, his 15th game this year of three or more hits for the Royals. Edward Olivares had an RBI double in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Logan Porter, a 28-year-old catcher, made his major league debut for the Royals and went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. The ball from his first hit was secured by first base coach Damon Hollins and will probably end up in his man cave, he said.

“I thought the nerves were going to be a little bit higher,” Porter said after a dousing from his teammates and a visit with a dozen friends and family. “I was very comfortable and very confident, which was awesome.”

“Well, good afternoon, everyone. After looking at Saturday’s game throughout the day on Sunday, we beat a really good football team in Troy. I thought we did some really good things on both sides of the ball at times. I thought that we are still making some mental errors, making some alignment errors, making some communication errors. Little things that you may or may not see on film or from the stands that we need to continue to get better at and shore up. I liked what we did at times offensively with being an explosive team and scoring at some critical times. We missed a number of opportunities that we could have gotten points. I credit Troy on that because I thought they had a really good plan. Then, on defense, we had a little lull in the second quarter where we couldn't get off the field on third down and had some penalties and one explosive play, but I thought the second half of defense really played exceptional football. We’re continuing to learn. We’re continuing to get better. We still have to continue to improve. We are by no means a finished product. We have to continue to get better as these weeks in September go by leading us into our conference play. We've got a tremendous challenge this week going on the road, a great environment to play Missouri, and they got a really good football team. So, it'll be a big challenge for us.”

Prairie Dunes Country Club, in Hutchinson, Kan., has been chosen by the USGA as the host site for the 2029 U.S. Senior Open and 2032 U.S. Senior Women’s Open. They will be the ninth and 10th USGA championships held at the club and the first since 2006.

“The USGA is pleased to reunite with Prairie Dunes Country Club and continue what has been a long and mutually beneficial partnership that began nearly 60 years ago,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA chief championships officer. “We know that Prairie Dunes, its surrounding community and the entire state of Kansas will be thoroughly engaged in hosting the best senior players from around the world. In addition, Prairie Dunes remains committed in its support of both amateur and professional competition.”

Prairie Dunes Country Club, located 50 miles northwest of Wichita, Kan., was founded in the mid-1930s by salt magnate Emerson Carey and his sons. The first nine holes were designed by Perry Maxwell and opened for play in 1937. Maxwell’s son, Press, was the architect of the second nine holes 20 years later. Prairie Dunes is a links-style course that reflects the common traits of rural Kansas, including sand dunes, native prairie grasses, yucca plants, cottonwoods and constant wind.

“Prairie Dunes is proud of our long-standing history of hosting USGA championships and honored to continue that privilege,” said Keith Hughes, club president. “We are so grateful that the USGA will return the U.S. Senior Open to our club in 2029 and that we will have an opportunity to host the U.S. Senior Women’s Open. We would like to thank the USGA for their continued partnership and our club family for supporting all efforts necessary to host events of this magnitude.”

The club has previously hosted eight USGA championships, including the 2006 U.S. Senior Open. Allen Doyle crafted a final-round 68 to finish at 8-under-par 272, two shots ahead of eight-time major professional champion and Kansas native Tom Watson. Doyle became the third player to win back-to-back Senior Opens.

Five-time USGA champion Juli (Simpson) Inkster also has strong ties to Prairie Dunes. She won the first of three consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur titles at the club in 1980 with a 2-up victory over Patti Rizzo in the final. She returned to Hutchinson in 2002 to claim her second U.S. Women’s Open with a closing 4-under-par 66 for a two-stroke victory over Annika Sorenstam. Inkster is joined by Jack Nicklaus (Pebble Beach Golf Links) and Matt Fitzpatrick (The Country Club) as the only players to win respective U.S. Amateur and Open championships on the same course.

Prairie Dunes has also hosted two other U.S. Women’s Amateurs, won by Barbara McIntire in 1964 and Amy Fruhwirth in 1991. The club also hosted the 1986 Curtis Cup Match, won by Great Britain and Ireland; the 1988 U.S. Mid-Amateur, won by David Eger; and the 1995 U.S. Senior Amateur, won by James Stahl Jr.

In 2014, the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship was held at Prairie Dunes, with the University of Alabama claiming the team title and Stanford University’s Cameron Wilson the individual title. The club has also hosted six Trans-Mississippi Amateurs, including the 1958 championship that was captured by Nicklaus, who went on to win 18 professional majors, including four U.S. Opens. Additionally, the club has been the site of six Kansas State Amateurs (1962, 1967, 1976, 1984, 1993, 2010) and three Kansas State Women’s Amateurs (1961, 1969, 2019).
