WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita struggled to get anything going in the season finale until the bottom of the ninth. With the threat of their play-off chances being ended and worse being shutout on top of it, they began to rally. Just as Midland had a late rally in yesterday’s ballgame, the Surge hoped they could have their own in this game. They managed to battle all the way back in the ball game after batting around and scoring four runs, but it proved to be too little too late. Midland won the ball game by a score of 6-4, and they won the series after winning four games to two.

The first runs of the ballgame came on a controversial call in the top of the second. RockHounds right fielder Cameron Masterman hit a towering fly ball down the left field line that, depending on your viewpoint, looked anywhere from ten feet foul to just foul. It was ruled a three-run home run. The call was not overturned, even after an umpire meeting and protests from Surge manager Ramon Borrego.

The RockHounds tacked on another run in the top of the third. Jonny Butler hit an RBI single on a line drive to center field.

The second home run of the ball game was hit by Midland in the top of the seventh. Max Muncy hit a solo home run that landed in the bullpen past the left field wall. The RockHounds added on another run in the inning when Butler hit his second RBI single of the day on a fly ball to left field.

The Wind Surge came alive in the bottom of the ninth. They were able to hit around sending a total of ten batters to the plate and scored four runs. Alex Isola got things started with an RBI double. Rucker then followed him up with his own RBI double. Tanner Schobel and Ben Ross both had RBI singles. They threatened with runners on but they could not pull off the comeback.

Jordan Carr made his first start on the mound for the Wind Surge. He pitched three innings where he gave up four runs off four hits. He struck out one batter and walked another. He was credited with the loss, and his record fell to (1-1).

Midland starting pitcher Ryan Cusick pitched six scoreless innings where he only gave up three hits. He struck out six batters and walked none. He earned the win, and his record improved to (5-7).

The Wichita Wind Surge finished the 2023 regular season with a record of (36-33, 64-73), and the Midland RockHounds finished their season at (38-31, 70-68).

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, including one to returning star Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs overcame three early turnovers to beat Jacksonville 17-9 on Sunday for their third victory against the Jaguars in 10 months.

The Chiefs (1-1) won their eighth straight in the series and avoided becoming the first Super Bowl champions to start 0-2 since Denver in 1999.

The Jaguars (1-1), who insisted all week they owed the Chiefs because of a loss in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs in January, pretty much no-showed in their home opener.

Coach Doug Pederson’s team had another slow start, failed to capitalize on two of three turnovers and struggled to protect quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence threw incomplete on a fourth-and-12 play with 4:16 remaining in an eight-point game, and Kansas City didn't let the Jaguars get the ball back.

Chiefs All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, making his season debut after ending his holdout and signing a one-year contract, dominated his one-on-one matchups. Jones&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1703473144487444561">manhandled rookie right tackle Anton Harrison</a>&nbsp;and was equally effective against the rest of Jacksonville’s line. He finished with two sacks on five QB pressures.

With extra time to prepare following a loss to Detroit 10 days earlier in the NFL opener, the Chiefs had hoped to look a lot more like their normally dynamic selves on offense. But Richie James muffed a punt, Justin Watson fumbled and Mahomes threw an interception. Kadarius Toney, who dropped three passes in the opener, fumbled late in the third but was able to scoop up the loose ball and avoid another turnover.

Mahomes completed 29 of 41 passes for 305 yards. He&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1703481447833600419">found Kelce all alone in the end zone</a>&nbsp;to extend KC’s lead to 14-6. CBS play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle slipped in a song reference to reports linking Kelce to pop superstar Taylor Swift by saying “Kelce finds a blank space for the score.” One of Swift’s many hits is “Blank Space.”

The Chiefs converted twice on fourth down and outgained Jacksonville 399 to 271 in total yards. The Jaguars had several chances but settled for field goals in two trips into the red zone, and they averaged a measly 4.2 yards per play.

Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who spent the first four years of his NFL career with Jacksonville, had a rough homecoming. Taylor was penalized five times and ultimately benched for a series. He was flagged twice for false starts, once for an illegal formation and twice for holding.

Pederson fell to 0-4 against his close friend and mentor, Chiefs coach Andy Reid. This was Pederson's first loss at home; the previous three were played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Chiefs beat Pederson and Philadelphia 27-20 in Week 2 of the 2017 season; the Eagles rebounded and ultimately won the Super Bowl. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yordan Alvarez and Jake Meyers homered and Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings as the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Sunday.

The Astros salvaged the final game of the series, expanding their American League West lead to 1 1/2 games as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rangers-guardians-jose-ramirez-61eea76df6e6b6f46af65b9a481904ab">Texas lost to Cleveland 9-2.</a>

Valdez pitched around three Astros errors for his fifth consecutive quality start, allowing one unearned run on five hits and a walk, striking out five.

Falling behind early, Valdez (12-10) had trouble locating his changeup. He threw first-pitch strikes to 11 of 26 batters while missing the strike zone with 16 of 39 changeups.

Meyers led off the fourth with his 10th homer and Alvarez hit his 28th leading off the fifth, the 38th allowed by Jordan Lyles (4-17), tying a Royals record. Kansas City is 48-102.

Houston collected leadoff hits in all but one inning against Lyles, who limited the damage as the Astros were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. He completed six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

Drew Waters’ sacrifice fly opened the scoring. After Logan Porter reached on Valdez’s throwing error and threw wildly to first, Nick Loftin advanced to third. Porter was later awarded second as first baseman José Abreu threw his glove at Valdez’s wild throw for a second error on the same play.

Houston tied the game on José Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the third before Chas McCormick’s two-out RBI single gave the Astros a 2-1 lead. McCormick had three of Houston’s nine hits and stole two bases.

Meyers’ triple and Jose Altuve’s third hit highlighted a three-run ninth inning.

With a perfect eighth, Bryan Abreu extended his scoreless streak to 21 2/3 innings, matching a career high with the majors’ longest active streak.

Nick Loftin had two of Kansas City’s six hits as the Royals four-game win streak ended.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Isbel’s bunt single lifted the Kansas City Royals past the Houston Astros 10-8 on Saturday night. Isbel’s seventh-inning RBI bunt broke a 6-all tie for the Royals fourth straight win and a second consecutive series win for Kansas City. Logan Porter connected for his first career home run and James McArthur earned his first major league victory. Taylor Clarke earned his second save. Jose Altuve’s three-run homer tied the game in the top half of the inning, as the Astros overcame an early 4-0 deficit. Houston lost their first series since late June, having won 10-of-12 series with two splits.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr. combined for 137 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Jalon Daniels threw for 298 yards, and Kansas pulled away from Nevada in the fourth quarter for a 31-24 victory. The game was tied at 24-all when Daniels went 4-for-4 for 55 yards, leading to Neal’s third touchdown on a 3-yard run and a 31-24 lead with 6:20 left to play. Nevada was not able to cross midfield on its final two possessions. The Jayhawks (3-0) were a 28-point favorite at Nevada sports books. The Wolf Pack (0-3) was looking to end the nation’s longest losing streak. The now 13-game skid is also the longest in program history.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Harrison Mevis kicked a 61-yard field goal with no time remaining, sending Missouri to a come-from-behind 30-27 victory over No. 15 Kansas State in a nonconference showdown of former Big 12 rivals. The SEC-record-long kick Saturday came after a delay-of-game penalty had pushed the Tigers back five yards. Brady Cook finished with 356 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Tigers, despite hobbling around on sprained knee. Luther Burden III had both of the scoring grabs, finishing with seven catches for 114 yards. Will Howard threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns with an interception for the Wildcats, who had plenty of chances to put the game away. They were done in by late penalties and their inability to convert on third down.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Xavier Worthy caught a 44-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter and Jerrin Thompson added an interception return for another score minutes later as No. 4 Texas pulled away late from Wyoming for a 31-10 victory. The win pushed the Longhorns to 3-0 for the firs time since 2012. Jonathon Brooks added 164 yards rushing for Texas. Harrison Waylee led Wyoming with 110 yards rushing and a 62-yard touchdown. The game was tied 10-10 to start the fourth quarter before Worthy broke the game open with a short catch and scamper along the sideline to the end zone.

HOUSTON (AP) — TCU quarterback Chandler Morris threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns as the Horned Frogs spoiled Houston’s Big 12 Conference debut with a 36-13 victory. TCU (2-1, 1-0) won its second straight game after a season-opening loss to Colorado. TCU’s offense had a fast-paced opening drive that ended with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Morris to Warren Thompson, just 1:31 into the game. Morris finished 24 of 37, threw one interception and added 53 rushing yards on 12 carries. Houston (1-2, 0-1) moved up from the American Athletic Conference this season but suffered a rude welcoming to the Big 12.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Kedon Slovis threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including one to Chase Roberts who made a one-handed catch with eight minutes left, to give BYU a 38-31 win against Arkansas. Slovis finished 13 of 25 for 167 yards and LJ Martin added 77 yards rushing with two scores. Arkansas drove inside the BYU 20 in the final 20 seconds, but the drive stalled with four penalties including one on the final play to end the game.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Brett Gabbert threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joe Wilkins Jr. in overtime and the Miami-Ohio RedHawks defeated its oldest rival, the Cincinnati Bearcats, 31-24 on Saturday night to break a 16-game losing streak in the series. Cincinnati’s Emory Jones’ pass on fourth down from the 2 was intercepted by Yahsyn McKee to end it. Carter Brown’s 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked by McKee as time expired to force overtime.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — CJ Donaldson rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown before getting hurt as West Virginia beat Pittsburgh 17-6 in the ‘Backyard Brawl.’ The Mountaineers scored 10 points off of two Pittsburgh interceptions. Donaldson was hurt in the fourth quarter and West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene was injured in the first quarter. Neither returned to the game. BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Deion Sanders didn't like Jay Norvell's comments about wearing sunglasses and a hat in media interviews. He's making the most of it to motivate the 18th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes ahead of their game against Colorado State. Norvell said on his radio show that when he sat down with ESPN to talk about the game, he didn't wear shades or a hat like Sanders does because his mother taught him better. Sanders responded by handing out his signature shades to his players and to ESPN personalities who are in Boulder to cover the game.

Shohei Ohtani's locker has been packed up at Angel Stadium, and the Angels decline to say why

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani's locker has been mostly cleared out at Angel Stadium, and the Los Angeles Angels declined to say why. The two-way superstar missed his 11th consecutive game with an oblique muscle injury Friday night when the Angels lost 11-2 to Detroit. Although Ohtani was at the stadium before the game, his locker was largely empty afterward. An Angels spokesman said the team will give more information about the development Saturday.

Since 1990, only 31 of the 270 clubs that began a season 0-2 advanced to the playoffs. The Cincinnati Bengals recovered from losing their first two last season to finish 12-4 and reached the AFC championship game. The Vikings have to buck the losing trend after another sloppy effort in a 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. They had four costly fumbles, including Justin Jefferson losing the ball out of bounds in the end zone. That followed up a mistake-filled 20-17 loss at home to Tampa Bay in Week 1.

Zach Eflin and the Rays limit the Orioles to 2 hits, win 7-1 to pull even in AL East

BALTIMORE (AP) — Zach Eflin and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, Brandon Lowe and Harold Ramírez homered, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-1 to pull into a virtual tie atop the AL East. Tampa Bay has won nine of 11 and 18 of 24. The Rays erased a season-high four-game deficit in a span of six days thanks in part to winning the first two of a four-game series against Baltimore. The Orioles have dropped four straight, matching their longest skid of the season. Baltimore's Heston Kjerstad homered leading off the sixth for his first major league hit.

Rubiales has been given a restraining order after denying wrongdoing in front of a Spanish judge

MADRID (AP) — Spain's National Court says the former president of the country's soccer federation has been given a restraining order and is prohibited from contacting the player he kissed on the lips last month at the Women's World Cup. Luis Rubiales kissed Spain forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England to win the title on Aug. 20 in Australia. He appeared in front of a judge and denied wrongdoing. Rubiales has said Hermoso consented to the kiss. She has denied that repeatedly. State prosecutors formally accused Rubiales last week of sexual assault and an act of coercion.

Thomas moves back into contention at Fortinet Championship

NAPA. Calif. (AP) — Justin Thomas committed to a driver change, tinkered a little with his swing and got immediate results with a 5-under 67 that left him four strokes off the pace Friday in the Fortinet Championship. It was exactly what the former top-ranked player needed after going winless during the FedEx Cup season, taking some time off and then struggling through the first round in Napa. One of four U.S. Ryder Cup team members at Silverado Resort, Thomas feels much better about his game than he did a short time ago. S.H. Kim played in the afternoon and made six birdies and one bogey for a 67 and a share of the lead with Sahith Theegala (64) at 12-under 132.

Martin Truex Jr. is staring down elimination from NASCAR playoffs after winning regular-season title

Regular-season NASCAR champion Martin Truex Jr. is in a slump going into Saturday night's race at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. Two bad races to open the playoffs has left him on the brink of elimination. Also below the cutline are Bubba Wallace, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Michael McDowell. NASCAR moved the start of the race up by one hour because of expected bad weather. Four drivers will be cut from the 16-driver field after the race.

Vikings RB Mattison calls out racial slurs directed at him on social media after loss to Eagles

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison said he received more than 60 "disgustingly disrespectful messages" through social media that included racial slurs and encouraged suicide in the aftermath of the team's recent loss. Mattison is Black. He revealed on an Instagram story post that he was taunted through direct messages and comments sections regarding his performance in defeat Thursday at Philadelphia. Mattison urged the 60-plus users to "really reflect" on their words and how that could truly affect a person. The Vikings and the NFL also issued statements of condemnation.

The Vikings are focusing on fumble-proofing the rest of their season after slippery 0-2 start

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings started the season just six days ago. It's literally slipping away. The Vikings have already taken two frustrating losses thanks to the costly fumbles that have accounted for six of their seven turnovers. They were beaten 34-28 by Philadelphia after losing fumbles by punt returner Brandon Powell, running back Alexander Mattison, wide receiver Justin Jefferson and quarterback Kirk Cousins. Coach Kevin O'Connell said his staff is working on new ways to practice ball security. The Vikings play the Los Angeles Chargers next.

SEAN BOSTONHutch Post MAIZE, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School football team forced four Maize South turnovers in a 28-23 Salthawks win on the road Friday evening.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (2-1) junior Terrell King had a monster night for the Salthawks with five receptions for 185 yards and three touchdowns, while also rallying two interceptions on defense.&nbsp;

Senior Jax Heneha also had a big night with two interceptions defensively. Heneha sealed the win with his second pick and a 61-yard return midway in the fourth quarter to help setup the final Salthawks score.&nbsp;

Hutchinson trailed Maize South (2-1) 14-3 at halftime, but the Salthawks used a pair of big plays in the third quarter to come from behind and take the lead.&nbsp;

Sophomore quarterback Robert Hunter found senior Terrell King for a 62-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14 with 3:52 left in the third. The two connected just over three minutes later when King, right after picking off a Maize South pass, scored on an 80-yard hookup to put the Salthawks in front, 21-14.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson offense ran 70 plays for 371 yards, while the Maize South offense ran 45 plays for 194 yards.&nbsp;

Hunter finished 9-for-16 passing for 215 yards and three scores.&nbsp;

Hutchinson used a balanced rushing attack, as senior Zion Burgess ran the ball 16 times for 63 yards, Hunter 15 times for 19 yards and junior Kade Smith 10 carries for 66 yards.&nbsp;

Maize South junior Tate McNew finished 14-for-26 passing for 156 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.&nbsp;

The Salthawks defense held the Maize South rushing attack to 38 yards on 19 carries.&nbsp;

Hutchinson will host Derby (2-1) next Friday at Gowans Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff, while Maize South will travel to Newton (1-2).&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;— The Kansas State Wildcats men's basketball team received a commitment from Will McNair Jr. on Friday morning, via on3's Joe Tipton.

McNair began his collegiate career at New Mexico State, where he played for three seasons for the Aggies. After NMSU, McNair transferred to Mississippi State, where he played last season for the Bulldogs. McNair then transferred to Providence, where he had only played on the overseas trip this summer for the Friars.

McNair has played in 116 games in his four years of college basketball, starting 29 of those. He has averaged just under four points per game and just over three rebounds. His most productive year was in 2021-22 at New Mexico State when McNair averaged 6.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 34 games, 27 of which were starts.

The 6-foot-10, 265-pound power forward is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and attended Martin Luther King High School.&nbsp;

He has averaged just under four points per game and just over three rebounds. MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;Trailing by a goal in the late stages of Thursday's Big 12 opener, K-State received a thunderous goal from fifth-year senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/aliyah-el-naggar/11059">Aliyah El-Naggar</a>&nbsp;to send the Wildcats to a 1-1 draw with Cincinnati at Buser Family Park. The draw ended a four-match losing streak for the Wildcats and marks the second straight season K-State has opened league play with a draw.

HOW IT HAPPENED - K-State (2-4-3) held the Bearcats off the scoreboard for the first 63 minutes, but in the 64th minute Cincinnati (1-4-3) found twine for a 1-0 lead. Laura Zemberyova squared up a shot from outside the 18-yard box and found the upper left corner of the frame for her second goal of the season. - The Wildcats were pushing an attack forward when the Bearcats were whistled for a foul roughly 30 yards from their goal. El-Naggar stepped over the ball and ripped a thunderous live drive free kick that whizzed past Cincinnati goalkeeper Anna Rexford and off the right post, banking into the back of the net. - This was El-Naggar's second goal this season and the fourth of her K-State and collegiate career. The effort was the Mason, Ohio, native's second career game-tying goal, setting a new school record for career game-tying goals. - Cincinnati's last ditch attempt by Megan Smith with under five seconds to play from the edge of the 18-yard box was saved by K-State goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/murphy-sheaff/11202">Murphy Sheaff</a>&nbsp;to preserve the draw. Sheaff ended the night with six saves. - The Bearcats outshot K-State, 15-8, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. &nbsp;

I felt the game was played a lot in the middle third of the field, and they scored a nice goal. But then we kept grinding and we kept battling and we responded really well just to equalize in the game. It could have gone either way, but it's nice to get a point. A result to open up with the Big 12." On the offensive improvement…"We're working on some things in training to allow us to create more chances. I thought we had some good chances today. I wish we would have executed a couple more or at least one more. But you know, it's in the game of soccer those goals don't come that often, but it was great to get that goal that Aliyah (El-Nagger) put away to equalize it." On getting over a 4-game losing streak…"It was great, we got a lot of young players that have the ability to do really good things. And if we can avoid mental errors, and execute our chances, if we do those two things consistently the sky's the limit. It's just a matter of this group needing more experience and more time together. Hopefully, we've learned from this situation, which we did, we responded really quick to get an equalizer and I think that's it. That's a big step in the right direction." On where he has seen the most improvement…"They've had a very competitive schedule, and they've faced different types of opponents. I think going into this game, we got a little bit of the jitters out. It's a big challenge. How do you settle them and continue to play and focus on what we do best? And that's what we did today, we focused on us. And I felt like we got the result." On younger players getting a chance to step-in…"Great. I mean, we had a couple players step up. I thought&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/andra-mohler/11070">Andra Mohler</a>&nbsp;came in today and was significant for us and contributed on the attack and created some good chances. Because I'm a fifth-year, they're pretty young, &nbsp;I don't have anyone in my class that I really know. But it was just fun getting to play my hometown, it's weird I'm used to being there. But getting that goal too, it was really nice against them." On her goal…"Well, at first right when I lined up for it Andra (Mohler) was in line right where I was about to hit it, and I was like, 'Scoot over, I'm going to nail your player in the head if you don't scoot over,' and she ended up scooting over and right when I hit that ball, I kind of knew that it was going to go in, it just felt really good." On staying positive throughout the game…"I think this week was a lot about focusing on us. We've noticed as a team that the past four games we've been focusing a lot on the other team when we really need to focus on ourselves and what we do best. So in the locker room, we were just like, 'hey, keep playing our game. We're putting them under pressure. They're getting nervous.' So basically just keep doing what we're doing. And especially when that goal went in and the level didn't go down, it's been going down in the past, and so it was nice that we almost kind of raised it a little bit."

⚽ WSOC: K-State draws with Cincinnati in Big 12 opener

NORMAN, Okla. –&nbsp;In the conference opener on Thursday night at John Crain Field, Kansas and Oklahoma played to a 2-2 draw. Second half goals by Avery Smith and Olivia Page helped Kansas come from behind to earn the draw.

Kansas trailed 2-0 at the half, but the Jayhawks came out with an edge in the second half. Smith scored her second goal of the season in the 65th minute on a header. Page’s equalizer came in the 84th minute on a header that was redirected to her on the left post.

“It was two completely different halves,” Head Coach Mark Francis said. “The team we were in the first half and the team we were in the second half were polar opposites. We changed the formation at half. We felt like it was going to give us a better opportunity and it worked. The formation worked, but the kids were the ones that made it work. I’m just really proud of how the girls came back. We showed a lot of character today.”

Oklahoma built a two-goal lead in the opening half. In the 26th minute, Danielle Wolf put the Sooners ahead 1-0 after controlling a rebound in the box and kicking it into an open net.

OU was then awarded a penalty kick in the 34th minute. Melania Pasar was able to keep the game at 1-0 with a diving save on the attempt. The save was her second of the season on a penalty kick. However, Oklahoma received another penalty kick in the 38th minute. Leonie Weber converted on that penalty kick to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Kansas pushed its first goal across in the 65th minute. Moira Kelly took a free kick from in front of the Kansas bench and played it perfectly into the box for Smith to get her head on the ball and direct it into the right corner of the net. Smith’s goal was her second of the season. Both of her goals have come on headers off a free kick from Kelley. The goal cut the deficit to 2-1.

The second goal for Kansas started off with a corner kick. Kelley played the ball short to Magali Gagné who gave it back to Kelley to send it into the box. Kelley’s cross was redirected off the head of an OU defender to the back post where Page was able to get her head on the ball and put it past the goalkeeper for her first career goal.

Pasar made four saves in the match, while Smith and Page each led the team with two shots apiece.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns and threw a 63-yard TD pass to DeVonta Smith, D'Andre Swift ran for 175 yards and a score, and the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles held off the turnover-prone Minnesota Vikings 34-28. Hurts shook off a sluggish passing performance in the first half when he connected with Smith for the scoring strike in the third quarter that made it 27-7. It almost wasn't enough as Kirk Cousins tried to rally the Vikings late. But Minnesota couldn't overcome four lost fumbles as it fell to 0-2. The Eagles are 2-0.

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers announces he had surgery to repair torn Achilles tendon

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers says on Instagram he had surgery to repair his torn left Achilles tendon on Wednesday. Rodgers' post Thursday night includes a picture of him smiling in a blue medical cap and gown in a hospital bed with his left foot clearly bruised. Rodgers said the surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles who has worked with numerous professional athletes during his career. Rodgers is out for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon on the fourth snap of his debut with his new team Monday night, a 22-16 overtime victory over Buffalo.

Colorado St coach pokes at Deion Sanders for wearing hat, sunglasses before game with Colorado

DENVER (AP) — Colorado State coach Jay Norvell just heated up the rivalry with No. 18 Colorado by taking a poke at Deion Sanders. Norvell made a reference on his show to Sanders' tendency to wear a hat and sunglasses at news conferences. Norvell says that "when I talked to grownups, I take my hat and my glasses off." Norvell also mentioned how his players had a "chip on their shoulder" after conducting interviews with ESPN in advance of the game dubbed the "Rocky Mountain Showdown." Ryan O'Hearn and Gunnar Henderson homered for the Orioles, but with the game tied at 3, Raley hit a drive to center field off Kyle Bradish for his 19th home run of the year.

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have fired Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom as the team stumbled toward a third last-place finish in four seasons. The team made the announcement before the start of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees, who took the first two games of the series to drop Boston into a tie for last. Bloom was hired from the Tampa Bay Rays to help revive the farm system and bring financial stability to a team that was one of baseball's biggest spenders.
