KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — If anybody should know how to stop Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, it should probably be the Los Angeles Chargers and the rest of the AFC West, who get two cracks at beating the Kansas City Chiefs every season.

Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns, Kelce caught 12 passes for 179 yards and a score, and the Chiefs beat the Chargers 31-17 on Sunday to seize command of a division they have won seven straight years. Mahomes also improved to 29-3 against teams from the AFC West, which Kansas City already leads by three games just seven weeks into the season.

“I think both Kelce and Pat, when they're on the same page, that's a challenge for any defense,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose team became the first Super Bowl champion to lose its season opener and then rip off six straight wins.

“I know they work on it. This isn't, like, a secret,” Reid continued. “It's quite a tribute for those two executing the way they do."

Marquez Valdes-Scantling added three catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, and Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco also caught TD passes for the Chiefs (6-1), who have won four straight against the Chargers dating to their 2021 overtime thriller.

It wasn't easy Sunday. The Chiefs were leading 24-17 midway through the fourth quarter when Mecole Hardman, who returned to Kansas City just this week in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-hardman-42f4f30cc2f8e73026636f408eabc3ed">a trade with the New York Jets</a>, brought back a punt 50 yards. That gave them a short field and, six plays later, Mahomes hit Pacheco out of the backfield for the touchdown that put the game away.

“We just didn't get any rhythm in the second half,” said Chargers coach Brandon Staley, whose team was shut out over the final 30 minutes. “In the first half I thought we were aggressive. In the second half, we kept stalling out.”

The Chargers' Justin Herbert, who was sacked five times by the league's No. 2 scoring defense, had 259 yards passing with a touchdown and two picks. Joshua Palmer caught five passes for 133 yards and Joshua Kelley ran for 75 yards and a score.

“They're a good defense,” Herbert said. “We did our best to move the ball. We just didn't execute enough.”

The Chiefs had been relying all season on their defense to bail out an offense that had struggled to hit its stride.

Mahomes and Co. finally found it in the first half.

After an opening drive that netted a field goal, the reigning league MVP capped three of the next four with TD passes. The first was a 46-yard strike to Valdes-Scantling, the second to Rice, and the final one — almost fittingly — a flip from the 1-yard line to Kelce, who bulldozed through a group of defenders and into the end zone with 15 seconds left in the first half.

That prompted big cheers from the home crowd, including pop superstar Taylor Swift, who again watched from a luxury suite and celebrated with&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1716198134270034307">a personalized handshake with Brittany Mahomes</a>, the quarterback's wife.

Mahomes had 321 yards passing by that point, the fourth time in his career he had been over 300 before halftime. And Kelce had nine catches for 143 yards and a score, the second week in a row he'd been over 100 by the break.

“The main thing with Travis," Mahomes explained, “is the way he's able to recognize coverage and adjust on the fly. We always talk about it, but you can't take it for granted. He can read the coverages, stop in the windows and be on the same page as me."

Yet their big half only left the Chiefs leading 24-17, because the Chargers were getting some big plays of their own.

After they evened the score with a field goal of their own, Kelley got loose for a 49-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. And after Herbert connected with Palmer for 60 yards down the middle of the field, the Los Angeles quarterback found tight end Gerald Everett in the end zone for a touchdown.

Given all the first-half offense, the second half was mostly a dud. Both teams put together long drives in the third quarter, and both of them ended up with turnovers, leaving the Chiefs clinging to their 24-17 lead heading into the fourth.

That's when they were able to put the game away.

Swift was seen wearing a friendship bracelet with “87” on it. His failed attempt to give her a bracelet during her Eras Tour led to the tight end's courtship of the pop star, beginning with an invitation to a game at Arrowhead Stadium. Swift took Kelce up on it and they have been seeing each other ever since.

Chiefs pass rusher Charles Omenihu, who was suspended six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, made his debut in a big way. He had a sack in the first half and tipped a pass that L'Jarius Sneed picked off in the second.

Chargers: RB Austin Ekeler limped off in the first half but returned to the game. ... Everett left in the second with a quad injury.

Chiefs: LB Nick Bolton dislocated his wrist tackling Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen in the fourth quarter.

Chargers: Play the Bears next Sunday night.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa was 23 of 32 for 216 yards in his first head-to-head matchup against Hurts in the NFL. Hurts and Tagovailoa were teammates at Alabama under coach Nick Saban.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Mac Jones threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Mike Gesicki with 12 seconds remaining to lift the New England Patriots to a 29-25 win over the Buffalo Bills. The victory was the 300th in the regular season for Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who becomes the third man to reach that milestone after Don Shula and George Halas. Jones completed 25 of 30 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots snapped a three-game skid. (AP) — Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller said he has suspended an employee involved in allowing Adolf Hitler’s image to be shown on videoboards before playing No. 2 Michigan. The employee was not named Sunday will be paid pending an investigation that will help to determine potential action in the future. The creator and producer of The Quiz Channel on YouTube that includes Hitler’s image as part of a quiz said the school didn’t ask for permission to use his content or pay him for it and defended his decision to include the question on his platform.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Will Howard threw three touchdowns and Avery Johnson tossed a touchdown as well as Kansas State raced past TCU in a 41-3 victory during the program’s annual Harley Day at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Treshaun Ward also had 17 carries for 89 yards, while DJ Giddens rushed nine times for 85 yards and one touchdown for the Wildcats, 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12 Conference, who ran for 343 yards while outgaining the Horned Frogs 587-300 in a rematch from the 2022 Big 12 Championship Game.

“We executed at a very high level the entire game because we executed at a high level all week,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “It clicked tonight. I’m super excited for our players, coaches and fans because that’s a good football team. You guys know as well I do they’re a really good team. We were clicking on all cylinders.”

The victory marked the Wildcats’ first home game since a 44-31 win over UCF on September 23. A sellout crowd of 52,580 was on hand to witness the Wildcats third straight win over TCU in Manhattan and the largest margin of victory in the series since 1922.

“Hats off to our fans,” Klieman said. “It was unbelievably loud and impacted the game.”

TCU, 4-4 and 2-3, saw its hopes of reaching the end zone stall three times inside the red zone, including when it went 56 yards on 11 plays before Jacob Parrish broke up a pass intended for Savion Williams on a fourth-and-2 play from the K-State 19-yard line.

The Horned Frogs called a series of timeouts in a last-gasp effort to grab their first touchdown, but Josh Hoover threw back-to-back incompletions at the 2-yard line as time expired on the game clock.

Hoover threw for 187 yards and one interception after passing for 439 yards in his first career start against BYU last Saturday.

“We held them to three points, and they tried to put it in the last 30 seconds,” linebacker Jake Clifton said. “Everyone was into it. It was a full team effort.”

K-State’s 587 total yards marked its fifth most in history. In limiting TCU to 300 total yards, the Wildcats held the Horned Frogs to 188.4 yards under their season average.

It was the fewest points allowed by K-State in a Big 12 game this season and the fewest points scored by the Horned Frogs, who fell to 7-2 in road games under second-year head coach Sonny Dykes.

“Just feeding off this momentum, we just need it to carry on into future games,” linebacker Desmond Purnell said. “We just need to keep stopping teams. It was darn near perfect. We always have something to improve upon, but I do think we did really well tonight.”

After K-State exploded for a 27-3 halftime lead, Howard led the Wildcats to a pair of touchdowns in the second half. Howard took the Wildcats on a 13-play, 81-yard drive capped by his 11-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Brown in the end zone for Brown’s first-career touchdown with 2:30 left in the third quarter to make it 34-3. Howard threw his third touchdown to Will Swanson from four yards out late in the fourth quarter to put the Wildcats over 40 points for the fifth-straight home game dating back to last season.

It marked the 36th career touchdown pass by Howard, who tied Michael Bishop for fifth most in school history.

“Will Howard is our unquestioned leader on this football team, guys, and, you know, it was hard on Will, but he’s the lifeblood of our offense, and that kid is still a captain and that kid is still a guy who hoisted a Big 12 Championship trophy, and he’s a dang good football player,” Klieman said. “I love the kid because he just went back to work and said, ‘I have to play better.’

Howard completed 10-of-16 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns and added four rushes for 62 yards, as nine different players carried the football for an offense that last eclipsed 300 rushing yards against Texas Tech last season.

Johnson completed 5-of-10 passes for 90 yards and one touchdown and had 73 rushing yards on 16 carries one week after tying the school record with five rushing touchdowns.

“You got to prepare for both of them,” Ward said. “I said both of them would have significant touches. When it comes to teams, they have to prepare for both Will and Avery. Will did his thing today and Avery did his thing today.”

K-State had things under control early as it used 406 total yards to race to a 27-3 lead at halftime. It marked the first time K-State reached 400 yards in total offense in a half since at least 1999. The Wildcats didn’t score on every possession, but Howard and Johnson made it seem that way, alternating possessions and guiding an offense that produced 238 rushing yards and 168 passing in the first two quarters.

K-State rolled to touchdowns on each of its first three possessions and then used drives of 12 and 10 plays for a pair of Chris Tennant field goals of 27 and 40 yards.

The big question all week was whether senior team captain Howard or true freshman phenom Johnson would start in the game.

K-State began the game with some razzle-dazzle as Howard handed off to Johnson on an end around for four yards. Howard remained on the field and led the Wildcats on an 8-play, 75-yard drive keyed by Howard’s 30-yard rush to set up a 2-yard run by Giddens for a 7-0 lead.

After a TCU punt, Johnson made the most of his opportunity. He ran and slashed and handed off to Ward before hitting Brown with a brilliant 26-yard over-the-shoulder pass. That set up Johnson for a shovel pass to Ward for a 3-yard score — Johnson’s first touchdown pass of his career.

“It was fun to just get out there and play a little bit more and get to play a little bit more each week,” Johnson said. “Will dominated tonight, credit to him. I was really excited for him, to see him go out there and do his thing. Whenever you win a conference game that big, at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter how we got it done. We got it done.”

After a Griffin Kell 32-yard field goal, Howard found Giddens with a swing pass to the right and Giddens outraced linebacker Shad Banks Jr. for 61-yard catch-and-run touchdown and a 21-3 lead.

“They just kind of forgot about him,” Howard said. “He was my first read and I threw it to him, and he made me feel good. It still shows up as a 61-yard pass, so I’ll take it. Hey, thanks, DJ.”

Two more Johnson drives resulted in points as the Wildcats took a 27-3 lead into halftime.&nbsp;

“It was definitely special,” Ward said. “Coach Klieman gave us a speech and told us about what happened last year when we had a big lead, and they came back. The emphasis was to keep stepping on the pedal today and not letting up. We had a good victory.”

The game marked the second of five consecutive games against teams from the state of Texas, marking the longest stretch K-State has played against a single state since 1907. K-State has started the season with four straight home wins for the first time since 2016.

“The things we were able to do tonight, it opens up a lot of doors for us,” Howard said. “I’m feeling really good about our confidence level going forward.”

No. 14 Utah hits a field goal at the gun for a 34-32 victory over No. 18 Southern California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cole Becker made a 38-yard field goal as time expired, and No. 14 Utah blew an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter before rallying for a thrilling 34-32 victory over No. 18 Southern California. Caleb Williams ran for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:46 left for the Trojans. But Bryson Barnes punctuated Utah's winning drive with a spectacular 26-yard scramble to get the Utes well into field goal range for Becker's winner. Two-way sensation Sione Vaki caught two touchdown passes and accounted for 217 total yards while the Utes sent Williams and Lincoln Riley to their first loss at the Coliseum.

Milroe, No. 11 Alabama stage huge second-half rally, top No. 17 Tennessee 34-20

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Jalen Milroe passed for two touchdowns, Jihaad Campbell returned a fumble for a score in the fourth quarter and No. 11 Alabama uncorked 27 straight second-half points in rallying for a 34-20 victory over No. 17 Tennessee. With its national title hopes on the brink, Alabama turned in its most dominant half of the season. And it came against a border rival who had helped end 'Bama's championship aspirations a year ago. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Dragan Kesich made four field goals and Minnesota won at Iowa for the first time since 1999 to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series, holding the No. 24 Hawkeyes to 12 yards in the second half in a 12-10 victory Saturday. With the Floyd of Rosedale bronze hog statue at stake in the cross-border rivalry, Iowa appeared to take the lead with 1:21 left when Cooper DeJean returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown. But after a review, DeJean was ruled to have made a fair-catch signal. Iowa still had the ball, but Justin Walley intercepted Deacon Hill's pass with a minute to play. The Gophers (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) held Iowa (6-2, 3-2) to minus-2 yards in the third quarter.

Astros' Abreu suspended 2 games by MLB, which says he intentionally threw at García

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu was suspended for two games and fined by Major League Baseball, which said he intentionally threw at Adolis García of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. MLB said all six umpires decided Abreu's pitch was intentional. MLB said it "took into account the dangerous nature of the pitch and its potential impact on player safety." Abreu would start the suspension with Game 6 on Sunday unless he appeals. García and Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. were fined, along with Texas pitcher Matt Bush and Astros mamager Dusty Baker.

Collin Morikawa wins Zozo Championship in Japan for first PGA Tour title in more than two years

INZAI CITY, Japan (AP) — Winning the Zozo Championship in Japan was special for American Collin Morikawa, whose great grandparents emigrated from the country. But more important was a victory — anywhere — after a 27-month winless streak on the PGA Tour. He broke through Sunday with a 7-under par 63 for a six-shot win. Americans Beau Hossler and Eric Cole were in second, each six back with closing-round 70s.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The seventh win of the season did not come easily for No. 1 Hutchinson (7-0, 4-0).

The Dragons ripped off 20 unanswered points to begin the game, but left the door open for Garden City (3-5, 2-3) after Broncbuster quarterback Jalen Daniels connected on a 53-yard bomb to Keyshawn Buckley.

Buckley stepped out-of-bounds on the play and two flags were thrown. After deliberation, officials concluded pass interference on the Dragons forced the receiver out-of-play. Buckley re-established his feet before touching the ball.

Two defensive penalties on the Dragons (one for pass interference, the other for being offsides) were declined and the Broncbusters went for two.

The two-point conversion failed. Hutchinson took a 20-6 advantage into the locker room.

Hutchinson's first 20 points came compliments of three Samari Collier touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air.

Collier scored twice on the ground within the first six minutes of play.

His 4-yard touchdown run was followed by a defensive fumble recovery. Collier took advantage of the field position with a 3-yard score.

Collier's 33-yard touchdown pass to Zeriah Beason with 9:28 to play in the second quarter put Hutchinson up three scores.

The first misstep of the day came on a Cole Segraves 36-yard field goal attempt. His kick was good, but Hutchinson was flagged for illegal formation and backed up five yards.

The 41-yard attempt from Segraves was no good.

From there, Hutchinson committed three turnovers in the red zone.

"We left a lot on the table there today," head coach Drew Dallas said.

Collier was intercepted twice by Daniel Martin. The Broncbuster defender also recovered a fumble in the red area.

A Ryan Nolan interception in the third quarter gave Hutchinson a shot at another historic field goal. In the last home game against Dodge City, kicker Nestus Burger set a school record from 50 yards out.

Saturday, his 54-yard attempt went just wide right.

It was tough sledding on the ground for the Dragons. Garden City came into the game only allowing 79.7 yards rushing per game.

Collier led the Dragons in rushing with 67 yards, while Tyrell Reed (who was coming off his third offensive player of the week honor) was held to 58 yards on 11 carries.

The Dragons managed 138 yards on 37 rushing attempts, a far cry from the 263 Hutchinson averaged coming into the game.

"We just weren't able to get established at times," Dallas said of the rushing attack.

In the fourth quarter, Garden City faced 4th and Goal from the 4. Hutchinson stopped the Broncbusters, but got flagged for illegal substitution.

With new life, Daniels hit Alex Lines for a two-yard score.

Braxton Frey's extra point failed and the Dragons held on to a 20-12 advantage.

Stefaan Forbes mishandled the snap on a punt attempt inside the Dragon 15. Garden City recovered the ball at the Hutchinson 12.

Fortunately, an unsportsmanlike penalty on Garden City forced the ball back to the 27. Another Buster penalty, this time on head coach Tom Minnick, forced Garden City even farther back.

Facing 3rd and 30 from the 47, Daniels completed a 19-yard pass to Demond Demas. On 4th and 11 from the 28, Daniels scrambled around and found Ajou Ajou wide open on the back side of the defense.

Down 20-18, Garden City went for two. Daniels threw incomplete for Lines on the try.

Hutchinson answered on the next possession with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Collier to Beason.

Beason finished the day with five catches for 91 yards and two scores.

"He made two unbelievable catches," Dallas said of Beason.

Collier finished the day 11-of-19 with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran for 67 yards and two scores on the ground.

Daniel Brown wreaked havoc on the Buster offense all day. The nation's sack leader added three more to his tally. Brown finished with eight tackles, 3.5 for loss and three sacks.

"He's dynamic in a lot of different ways," Dallas said of Brown.

Garden City's last chance on offense ended with a turnover-on-downs with 1:35 to play.

The Coyotes are back home Saturday for a game against Kansas Conference and Bissell Division foe Saint Mary on Homecoming and Family Weekend. Kickoff is 5 p.m. on Bissell Field at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes have won the last five games against the Spires including a 39-13 victory last season in Leavenworth. KWU has outscored USM 277-30 in the five contests. The Coyotes have a 17-4 edge – 11-1 at home – since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes ran their winning streak to four with a 34-16 victory over Avila last Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. They led 20-10 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 14-6 in the second half.

Freshman&nbsp;Byron McNair&nbsp;made his first collegiate start and played well completing 11 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. The Coyotes totaled 250 yards rushing and were led by&nbsp;Tyler Boston&nbsp;with 119 yards and&nbsp;Nick Allsman&nbsp;with 80. Both scored a touchdown as did running back&nbsp;Mark Benjamin.&nbsp; Avila finished with 245 total yards but had a minus-one yard rushing on 22 attempts. KWU's allowing an averaging of 115.6 yards rushing per game.

 Coach&nbsp;Matt Myers&nbsp;said he would decide who will start at quarterback later in the week – McNair or&nbsp;Richard Lara. McNair came in for Lara in the second half of KWU's game against McPherson and has taken all the snaps since then.. KWU is the lone team in the Bissell Division with an overall winning record. Ottawa, Saint Mary and Tabor are next at 2-5.&nbsp;

The Spires lost to Ottawa 28-17 last Saturday in Leavenworth. It was their second consecutive loss and third in the last four games.. Saint Mary's games are typically entertaining with shootouts not uncommon. They defeated McPherson 36-32 and lost to Evangel 59-42. The Spires average 30.6 points but allow 40.3 points and 458 total yards that includes 265 rushing.&nbsp; Sophomore quarterback Erick Covington has thrown for 1,383 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 49 percent of his passes. Redshirt freshman Michael Gazzana is the top receiver with 36 receptions for 577 yards and six touchdowns. Davien Norman is next with 21 catches for 225 yards and three scores; Jartavious Martin has a team-best 396 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Defensive back Jaxon Curtis has a team-high 55 tackles and shares the lead in interceptions with three along with Landon Beecham.

"(McNair's) athletic ability has shown through and also his decision making. When a play breaks down, he can make plays which has been super important. I think the guys have bought in an believe in his skill set. We believe in all of our quarterbacks but he's the one that's performing the best at the moment."I expect (Saint Mary) to challenge us on defense and come and play super hard. We can't just come out and do the coin flip and go home. We need to make sure we start hot. Their RPO game is something that we haven't really seen thus far. Kickoff from Yager Stadium is set for 1 p.m. The Tigers enter at 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA, while the Ichabods are 1-6 overall, but still winless in conference play at 0-6. It will be the 77th&nbsp;meeting all-time between the schools.

Fort Hays State looks to snap a two-game losing skid to Washburn. The Ichabods claimed a 23-20 overtime win on their home field back in 2021 before claiming a 45-14 win in Hays last year. The last two meetings in Topeka have gone to overtime, both decided by three points. FHSU took the contest in Topeka between the teams in 2019 by a score of 41-38. The Ichabods hold a 46-27-3 advantage in the all-time series between the teams.

Topeka has been tough on the Tigers in recent times. The overtime win for FHSU in 2019 was its only win against WU in Topeka in the program's NCAA Division II history. The Ichabods won nine straight against the Tigers in Topeka from 1997 to 2016.After starting the season 2-2, Fort Hays State reeled off wins against Lincoln, Missouri Southern, and Nebraska-Kearney to get to 5-2. Washburn has dropped its last four contests with its only win being in non-conference play against Lincoln University by a score of 24-10 back on September 16 in Jefferson City.

Fort Hays State has moved up into a tie for third in the MIAA standings at 4-2 with Emporia State and Missouri Western. Pittsburg State (7-0) and Central Missouri (6-1) are the only teams in front of the three-way cluster for third place.

Jack Dawson&nbsp;leads the Tiger offense with 1,699 passing yards this season, completing 65.3 percent of his passes. His 17 passing touchdowns ranks 12th&nbsp;in NCAA Division II. Brothers Trevor Watts&nbsp;and Shane Watts&nbsp;have combined for 984 all-purpose yards this season. Trevor leads Tiger receivers in catches (38) and yards (405), while Shane leads Tiger rushers in yards (396). Shane is the team leader in all-purpose yards with 498 for the season. Jayden Horace&nbsp;is the top scoring target among Tiger receivers with seven touchdown receptions to go with 387 yards.

John Johnson and Makel Williams&nbsp;anchor the Tiger defense at linebacker. The pair has a combined 95 tackles for the season, Johnson with 49 and Williams with 46 to lead the team. Williams is the team leader in interception with three. Myles Menges&nbsp;moved into the team lead for sacks with 3.0, and Parrish Terry&nbsp;leads in tackles for loss with 8.0. The Tigers as a team have 11 interceptions this season, which ranks 14th&nbsp;in NCAA Division II. Aside from Williams' three picks, eight other players have one for the season.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team started the Dennis South Memorial Tournament with a win and a loss on Friday at Reiver Arena.

The Blue Dragons defeated Monroe College 25-19, 21-25, 29-27, 25-19 to open play on Friday. The Dragons then jumped out to a 2-0 lead on tournament host Iowa Western, but dropped a five-set nail-biter to the Reivers 25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 18-25, 13-15.

Now 21-13, the Blue Dragons play Missouri State-West Plains at 9 a.m. on Saturday to close out the tournament.

MONROE RECAPAfter the teams split the first two sets, the Blue Dragons held Monroe to .141 hitting over the final two sets and Hutchinson snapped a three-match losing streak with a four-set victory.

The Blue Dragons hit .218 for the match and out-blocked Monday 14-9.

Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had 12 kills each to lead the Blue Dragons.

Dean hit .550 for the match. She also had a career-high six service aces and five block assists.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/murphy_mckenzie_k4jq">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;finished with eight kills on .462 hitting with five total blocks, including three solo blocks.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/stubbs_emma_t7cd">Emma Stubbs</a>&nbsp;had season highs of six kills and four blocks.

Sophomore setter Giovanna Ravanahani had 38 assists with four block assists and four digs. Freshman libero&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/velez_alondra_c0k9">Alondra Velez</a>&nbsp;tied a season high with 16 digs. Freshman defensive specialist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/rollandini_isabella_ircy">Isabella Rollandini</a>&nbsp;had 10 digs.

IOWA WESTERN RECAPStubbs set a new season high for kills for a second-straight match with 14 kills on .278 hitting. She added two service aces.

Golden finished with 12 kills. Dean had nine kills and Long had eight kills.

Dean had four blocks against the Reivers. Murphy had three blocks.

Velez tied her season high with 16 digs. Rollandini had 14 digs.

The Blue Dragons are now 4-3 in five-set matches. This is the second time the Dragons have dropped a five-set match after leading 2-0 in the match.

🏐 Blue Dragons split matches on day 1 in Iowa

WICHITA, Kan. -&nbsp;The curtain was raised on the 2023-24 Wichita Thunder season Friday night at INTRUST Bank Arena. But on Friday night, the Kansas City Mavericks were the stars of the show.

But, it wasn't all bad. At least at the start.

Thunder forward&nbsp;Bradley Marek, sent down from the AHL's San Jose Barracuda prior to the start of training camp, opened to rave reviews, scoring a pair of goals in the first period. His first professional goal came 4:25 into the contest, when he caught a stretch pass from&nbsp;Dominic Dockery, got behind the Mavericks defense to beat netminder&nbsp;Dillon Kelley&nbsp;to give Wichita a 1-0 lead.

Just 4:37 later,&nbsp;Cole Coskey, who was a thorn in Wichita's side last season, netted his first of two on the night to even the scoring at one goal apiece. Mavericks defenseman&nbsp;Kyle Jackson&nbsp;won a battle in the corner, and fed it to&nbsp;Max Andreev, who fired a shot on net and Coskey potted the rebound past Thunder netminder&nbsp;Beck Warm.

The score stayed tied at 1-1 through the remaining minutes of the first period, until Andreev was called for interference. Within seconds of the power play beginning, Marek received a between-the-legs pass from&nbsp;Jay Dickman&nbsp;and once again beat Kelley in the upper corner to give Wichita a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes.

"He had a great first professional game," said Thunder head coach&nbsp;Bruce Ramsay. "He's a strong centerman, won his fair share of faceoffs, so that's great for him. But obviously, it was a disappointing night with the outcome and some of the luck we had.

The luck turned south quickly in the second period. Wichita was forced to kill off two powerplays during the period and had a third carry-over into the final period. While the Thunder were able to hold Kansas City off the scoreboard on the man advantage, they could not at even strength. Just over 100 seconds into the period, Coskey fired a shot that dribbled between Warm's pads and into the net to level things at 2-2.

A seeing-eye shot from&nbsp;Theo Calvas&nbsp;played pinball on the way into Warm, ultimately getting by him, to give KC a 3-2 lead in the late stages of the period.

Kansas City would pull away in the third as Wichita's frustration continued to mount. A pair of power-play goals and three overall in the period, would help the Mavs cap off a 6-3 win, and take game one of this 15-game season series.
