In the early morning of July 25, 2023, Lanette Richey, 61, went home to be with the Lord. She was born October 11, 1961, in Long Beach, CA, to William T. “Tom” and Cecilia Arlene (Mendenhall) Richey Sr.

Lanette spent most of her life in Hutchinson. She worked at R.L. Polk for almost 20 years.

The light of Lanette’s life was her 18-year-old son, Noah Anthony Richey. Noah recently returned home after graduating from the Army National Guard.

Lanette is survived by: her son, Noah Richey; mother, Arlene Richey; sister, Suzanne Sims (Greig); brother, Bill Richey (Becky), all of Hutchinson; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-niece, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her father; sister, Rhonda Armer; and great-nephew, Levi Sims

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Abbyville Cemetery.

Gary E. “Moe” Soloman, 84, of Olathe, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2023, with his wife and daughters by his side. He had been a resident at Silverado Memory Care since 2019. &nbsp;Moe was born on November 2, 1938, in Omaha, Nebraska to Edwin and Ellen (Johnson) Soloman.

Moe grew up, in Herington, Kansas where he attended St. Paul Lutheran School and was 1957 graduate of Herington High School. In 1960 he received his bachelor’s degree in business from Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University). He also served with the US Army Reserves.

Moe married his wife, Susie, on February 24, 1967.

Moe began working for the Rock Island Railroad as a teenager and continued his Railroad career until his retirement in 2001. He worked for the Rock Island, Cotton Belt, and Union Pacific Railroads during his career. He celebrated his retirement with a family trip to Hawaii in 2001.

Moe enjoyed following all K-State Sporting Events, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, traveling with friends and he also enjoyed shopping for a good bargain.

Moe is survived by his loving wife, Susie Soloman: daughters, Kiffany (Craig) Herrmann and Heather Soloman all of Olathe. Granddaughters, Claire Herrman of Overland Park, and Nicole Herrmann of Olathe.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Ellen Soloman.

His family will gather with friends on Thursday August 3, 2023, at 9:30 am at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington, Kansas following will be a funeral service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, at 10:30 am, in Herington. Dennis Lee Embrey, 60, of McPherson passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at McPherson Hospital. He worked at Central Plastics and held the title of line setup operator. He was one of few employees on 2nd&nbsp;shift that covered more than one title. He worked as a material handler for several years, as well as a line operator and line prep. He also would be called upon to train new employees for each of these positions.&nbsp;

Dennis was born on Aug. 5, 1962, in Chamberlain, SD, the son of Lewis Lawrance and Janice Louise (Kelley) Embrey. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1980.

Survivors include: his parents, Lewis &amp; Janice Embrey of Lindsborg, KS; a sister, Connie Stark (Claus) of Smithville, MO; a son, Steven Embrey of Schulenburg, TX; a daughter, Megan Valenta (Garrett) of Moundridge, KS; step-children, Brooks Johnson of McPherson, KS, Zach Johnson of McPherson, KS, Chad Richert (Justin Cook) of Kansas City, MO, AshLeigh Brodin of Kansas City, MO, and Sierra Kerbs of Joplin, MO; a niece, Marissa Stark of Lafayette, CO; four grandchildren, Daniel Scott, Gabe Embrey, Nathan Scott, and Zoey Scott; his beloved dogs, Skylar and Riley; and numerous extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Janel Embrey and Shannan Souder, and a brother, Christopher Embrey.

A celebration of Dennis’ life will be held on Monday, July 31 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the home of Lew &amp; Jan Embrey, 2329 12th&nbsp;Ave., Lindsborg.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wallace “Wally/Walt” S. Wren, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. He was born June 2, 1943, in Springfield, MO, to Ray A. and Lorene E. (Martin) Wren Jr.

On Nov. 1, 1960, Wally joined the United States Navy and was honorably discharged and retired after 30 years of serving our country. He later worked for Zales Jewelry and retired in 2005. Wally enjoyed family gatherings, martial arts, playing the Kansas Lottery and going to the casinos.

Wally is preceded by his parents and a daughter, Kelly Jo Martin.

He is survived by his by two sons, Jay Jazquez and wife, Jennifer, and Michael Wren and wife Misti; a daughter, Sian Jazquez; two sisters, Lynda Penny and husband, Richard and Kay Kissick and husband Jay; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11, 2023, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th St., Hutchinson, KS 67502. Military honors will be conducted by United States Navy Honor Guard. Wallace S. Wren |1943-2023|

Vera Louise Snowden Goss was born Feb. 11, 1935, in Hutchinson to the late Naomi and Charles Snowden. She departed this rich life on July 25, 2023, at the age of 88.

Vera was a graduate of Hutchinson Community College, where she received her Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing Health Sciences. Following college, she utilized her impeccable skills of communication, organization, planning, and caregiving to serve in various capacities, including secretarial, industrial, and private nursing.

What does it mean to have a spirit of giving? That can easily be defined by the life of Veral Louise Snowden Goss… Vera truly encompassed a beautiful spirit of giving, culminating into several service-oriented positions and appointments, including, but by no means limited to, serving as a member of the Silver Leaf Chapter #464 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Kansas and also the NAACP. Her advocacy and commitment to fighting for civil rights led to an appointment of Long-Term Care Ombudsman for the state of Kansas, wherein she tenaciously advocated to protect both the quality of life and quality of care of Kansas residents residing in long-term settings.

And yet even that level of community service could not contain Vera’s embodiment of giving, for she also volunteered at various meal centers and food banks in the Hutchinson area for decades. Up until a few years ago, she likewise served in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (grandparents program) through the Department of Education at Lincoln Elementary School, though she had no grandchildren in the school system. That is a spirit of giving! In fact, her desire to effectively engage and communicate with students, parents, and her peers even led her to take computer classes at the Elmdale 50+ Community Center.

Vera always embraced life with a welcoming, yet adventurous spirit. Her hobbies included traveling, particularly to wonderful destinations such as Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and Hawaii, enriching her experience of diverse cultures through museum exhibits and activities, and spending time with her casino favorite: the slot machines! And notwithstanding, Vera also loved to embrace the freedom and fluidity of dancing, for hers was a spirit that would not be contained.

Vera was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Donald Goss Jr. As the youngest and last of 8 children, her death she was also preceded by two sisters: Elva Mae Lewis and Mary Alice Snowden; and 5 brothers: Charles Ernest Snowden, George Luther Snowden, Everett Travis Snowden, John Snowden, and Burt Snowden.

She leaves to cherish her memory 3 daughters Cherterel Goss White of Columbia, MD, Michele Goss of Alexandria, VA and Charlesatta Goss Parker of Hutchinson, KS; four grandchildren Rashawn Goss-White of College Park, MD, KeAunte’ White-Lomax of Frederick, MD, Victoria Bryant of Washington, DC and Johnathan Parker of Springfield, VA; two great grandchildren Marquet Clark of the US Navy (Japan) and Lashaun Cole of College Park, MD, and an irreplaceable host of beloved family and friends.

Vera’s spirit will forever live among and within us, and it is with that in mind and in honoring her wishes, no formal memorial services will be held. Instead, in the coming days, weeks, months, and years, look to the open heavens, think of her, and smile.

Barbara Joann Williams, 71, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. She was born January 17, 1952 in Hutchinson, KS to Kenneth and Verna (Strayer) Wingert.

Barb graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1970 and went on to attend business school at Salt City Business College. She worked for the Hutchinson Clinic for many years, and was a well-known fixture in various roles. Barb’s greatest love was for her grandchildren. One of Barb’s favorite activities was line-dancing to country music - especially Alan Jackson! Barb took any opportunity to travel and adored both the mountains and the beach. Barb was not one to sit around, she kept herself busy crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren, crafting, quilting, walking, cooking for the family, or relaxing with her dog, Myleigh.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Verna; sisters, Karen Drassen and Janice Wingert; brother, William Wingert; and brother-in-law Larry Drassen.

She is survived by her three children, Joshua Webb and his wife, Dana, Bryan Webb, and Megan Webb and her fiancé, Dylan Green; two sisters, Cindy Wingert and Teresa Cofer; three grandchildren, Taiden Glenn, Taylor Glenn, and Tage Green; her cherished dog, Myleigh; beloved friend and kidney donor, Donna VanNordstrand; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Ruth FitzSimmons-Mavity of Cunningham, left us for her rocking chair in heaven during the early morning hours of Sunday, July 23, 2023. 

Marilyn was born on October 20, 1944, to Harold and Vivian (Brady) DeWeese in Kingman. She was raised on her parent’s farm southeast of Cunningham along with her 4 siblings, Dwane (Sue) DeWeese of Pratt, Dale (Janet) DeWeese of Cunningham, Jeanie (Eddie) Tharp of Pratt, and Ruth (Roy) Gamboa also of Pratt.

Marilyn was a 1962 graduate of Cunningham High School and received her master’s in early childhood education from Emporia State University. During her school years, Marilyn fell in love with her first husband, Lynn D. FitzSimmons. Following the wedding, Lynn and Marilyn lived in Pratt for a short time before moving to the FitzSimmons Homestead in eastern Pratt County where they farmed. From Lynn and Marilyn’s marriage came their three children, Dennis (Kristi) FitzSimmons - Pratt; Leann (Robert) Barnes - Pratt; and Barbara (Scott) Glenn of Arcadia, OK. In 1999, Marilyn married her second husband Jay F. Mavity and gained a second son, Mark (Maria) Mavity of Cunningham. In the last decade, Marilyn and Jay adopted a 3rd son, Daniel Shea of Cunningham.

Marilyn was a lifelong Cunningham resident and played many roles throughout her life. From the loving mother and grandmother her family will remember her as, to a prominent businesswoman. Marilyn taught kindergarten in Pratt briefly then ran a preschool out of her home on the farm during the 70’s and 80’s. She continued to hold every single one of her preschoolers dear to her heart. Marilyn was extremely active in the church her whole life, from teaching Sunday school, spearheading vacation bible school for decades, and leading adult bible studies in her later years. Marilyn and her husband Jay founded 4-C Childcare in Cunningham and the Cunningham Hands of Hope food bank ministry. Marilyn and Jay also played an extremely important role in starting the now defunct Civil Air Patrol Squadron at Cunningham High School. Besides her family, Marilyn’s pride and joy was the FitzSimmons Insurance Agency she founded in 1987, on the back porch of the farmhouse. Thirty-five years later, she still ruled it with an iron fist from her recliner, even after passing it on to the next generation. Over the years, Marilyn greatly enjoyed talking with all her customers, adjusters, company reps, and underwriters, with many becoming life-long friends. She took great pleasure in protecting the livelihood of farmers across the state.

Marilyn was proceeded in death by her parents; husbands, Lynn and Jay; her brother, Dale; brother in-law, Eddie Tharp; and beloved furry companions, Albert and Eddie. Survivors include her children and spouses, Dennis, Kristi, Leann, Robert, Barbara, Scott, Mark, Maria, and Dan; and grandchildren, Brandon, Spencer, and Jayden McNerny, Shelby FitzSimmons-Dirks, Kari FitzSimmons, Micheal and Tyler Glenn, and Jon and Jack Shaffer. Marilyn Ruth FitzSimmons-Mavity of Cunningham, left us for her rocking chair in heaven during the early morning hours of Sunday, July 23, 2023. Marilyn was born on October 20, 1944, to Harold and Vivian (Brady) DeWeese in Kingman. She was raised on her parent’s farm southeast of Cunningham along with her 4 siblings, Dwane (Sue) DeWeese of Pratt, Dale (Janet) DeWeese of Cunningham, Jeanie (Eddie) Tharp of Pratt, and Ruth (Roy) Gamboa also of Pratt. Marilyn was a 1962 graduate of Cunningham High School and received her master’s in early childhood education from Emporia State University. During her school years, Marilyn fell in love with her first husband, Lynn D. FitzSimmons. Following the wedding, Lynn and Marilyn lived in Pratt for a short time before moving to the FitzSimmons Homestead in eastern Pratt County where they farmed. From Lynn and Marilyn’s marriage came their three children, Dennis (Kristi) FitzSimmons - Pratt; Leann (Robert) Barnes - Pratt; and Barbara (Scott) Glenn of Arcadia, OK. In 1999, Marilyn married her second husband Jay F. Mavity and gained a second son, Mark (Maria) Mavity of Cunningham. In the last decade, Marilyn and Jay adopted a 3rd son, Daniel Shea of Cunningham. Marilyn was a lifelong Cunningham resident and played many roles throughout her life. From the loving mother and grandmother her family will remember her as, to a prominent businesswoman. Marilyn taught kindergarten in Pratt briefly then ran a preschool out of her home on the farm during the 70’s and 80’s. She continued to hold every single one of her preschoolers dear to her heart. Marilyn was extremely active in the church her whole life, from teaching Sunday school, spearheading vacation bible school for decades, and leading adult bible studies in her later years. Marilyn and her husband Jay founded 4-C Childcare in Cunningham and the Cunningham Hands of Hope food bank ministry. Marilyn and Jay also played an extremely important role in starting the now defunct Civil Air Patrol Squadron at Cunningham High School. Besides her family, Marilyn’s pride and joy was the FitzSimmons Insurance Agency she founded in 1987, on the back porch of the farmhouse. Thirty-five years later, she still ruled it with an iron fist from her recliner, even after passing it on to the next generation. Over the years, Marilyn greatly enjoyed talking with all her customers, adjusters, company reps, and underwriters, with many becoming life-long friends. She took great pleasure in protecting the livelihood of farmers across the state. Marilyn was proceeded in death by her parents; husbands, Lynn and Jay; her brother, Dale; brother in-law, Eddie Tharp; and beloved furry companions, Albert and Eddie. Survivors include her children and spouses, Dennis, Kristi, Leann, Robert, Barbara, Scott, Mark, Maria, and Dan; and grandchildren, Brandon, Spencer, and Jayden McNerny, Shelby FitzSimmons-Dirks, Kari FitzSimmons, Micheal and Tyler Glenn, and Jon and Jack Shaffer. She is preceded in death by parents, husband, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

Darlene Faith Green was born on July 20, 1936, in the Free Methodist parsonage in Edison, Nebraska five minutes before her sister, Arlene Hope, the twin daughters of John C. and Jennie Green. The girls joined their four older brothers, John, Bob, Carroll, and Clark.&nbsp; Faith grew up in parsonages in Nebraska and Oregon before enrolling at Los Angeles Pacific High School &amp; College, where she met and fell in love with Dean Smidderks, a California boy with whom she shared a love of singing and a deep commitment to the Lord.&nbsp; They were married on June 9, 1955, and moved to Seattle to complete studies at Seattle Pacific College and then on to Wilmore, Kentucky, where Faith worked as a seamstress while Dean completed his seminary degree at Asbury Seminary.

The young couple accepted a pastorate in Yucca Valley, California where their daughters Angie and Jennie were born.&nbsp; During these years, they felt led to serve as missionaries and in 1963, they accepted an appointment to Mozambique. They spent the next two years in language study in Portugal and then sailed to South Africa where they were stationed at Baker Farm Mission while waiting for visas to Mozambique. After learning the Tswa language, Faith taught in the Bible School and assisted with women’s ministries. Faith’s indomitable spirit and great sense of humor were assets during these years on a remote mission station without electricity or safe drinking water. It was here that their third daughter, Kathie, was born. During their first furlough in 1969 in Los Angeles, California, Hendrik joined the family.

After a busy year of deputation, Dean &amp; Faith returned to Witbank, South Africa, where they completed another 5 years of missionary service, with Faith assuming duties of mission bookkeeper.&nbsp; Visas were finally granted while on their second furlough in 1974, and the family returned to Inhamachafo Mission Station in Mozambique in 1975, but civil war soon engulfed the country, forcing them to return to South Africa.

Faith continued to serve alongside Dean in South Africa at Witbank, Carletonville, and Johannesburg, as well as at the Bible Schools in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Malawi until their retirement in 1999.&nbsp; Faith added responsibilities of overseeing child sponsorship and served as mission hostess to overseas guests and missionaries.&nbsp; She is fondly remembered by many for her constant supply of cookies and cake and for delicious meals conjured from the most meagre supplies.&nbsp; It was a rare day that guests were not seated around their table or lodged in their guest rooms. All were made to feel at home.

Faith’s love for the African students earned her the nickname of Mamane Wuxinji (Mother Mercy) – a fitting name for her unfailing display of love and compassion.&nbsp; She was also a devoted mother to her four children, who relished her great sense of humor and zest for the adventure that Africa supplied in abundance. She approached every difficulty - from malaria to hyenas - with a positive attitude.

After retiring from the mission field, Dean and Faith pastored the Free Methodist church in Omaha, Nebraska and “retired” a second time to McPherson, Kansas where Faith kept busy with volunteer work at the charity thrift store.&nbsp; After several years of declining health, Faith moved to Pine Village Nursing Home in Moundridge, Kansas, where she endeared herself to the staff with her gentle disposition and love of singing.&nbsp; Faith died on July 24, 2023, just a few days after celebrating her 68th&nbsp;anniversary and 87th&nbsp;birthday.

Faith is survived by her husband, Dean, of McPherson, Kansas; brother, Bob Green of Lawrence; children Angie (Tim) Lancaster and Jennie (Brent) Hall, both of McPherson, Kathie (Malcolm) Vaughan of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Hendrik (Kaylene) Smidderks of Wichita;&nbsp; by grandchildren Desiree Harris, Timothy Lancaster, Sharon Lancaster, Lisa Yoder, David Hall, Amy Corona, Trevor Vaughan, Erin Blair and Linnea Smidderks; by 12 great-grandchildren, and many Green and Smidderks nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 8th at the McPherson Free Methodist Church parlor, and a memorial service will be held at the McPherson Free Methodist Church on Saturday, September 9th at 10:30 a.m.

He served in the Iraq War as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He worked as a welder for Great Plains Manufacturing CE Division in Salina.  Benji was an avid disc golf player. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and was a general outdoorsman.

He is survived by; his parents: Rich and Beth Cunningham of Salina; sister: Elaine Becker (Jason) of Salina; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members.  

Benji was preceded in death by his infant sister: Sharon Beth Cunningham.



The funeral will be held 10:30 am on Monday, July 31 at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, with Pastors Doug McHenry and Jonathan Sutter officiating.  

Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina following the funeral service. A reception will follow the burial at the Taylor’s Twirlers Studio, at the Central Mall, Salina. Guests may use the northeast entrance.

Douglas was born in Sandy Level, Virginia on January 2, 1946, the son of Dorothy Lee Scales. Doug attended Hillside Elementary School, Mount Laurel, New Jersey and Medford High School, Medford, New Jersey. He then attended Salina Technical School, Salina, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Douglas was united in marriage to Caryl Rosalind (Winter) Wedel on January 31, 1980 at the First United Methodist Church in McPherson, Kansas. Through the years, Doug worked for several mobile home manufacturers in Junction City, Kansas, worked for Kit Manufacturing, Kansas Jack as Senior Layout Draftsman, Wilson Construction and Engineers in Salina as a draftsman, Cargill Nutrina Feeds, Conway Elevator for W.R. Milling Company, and retired in 2010 from the National Cooperative Refinery Association as a number 1 operator. Doug was a member of the Kansas Muzzle Loading Association. He enjoyed rock and roll music, sewing, quilting, cooking and digitizing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and building guns. He is survived by his wife, Caryl; son, Erik Scales of Scottsdale, Arizona; step-son, Joseph Wedel of McPherson, Kansas; grandchildren, Krysta Wedel and Shawn Wedel; sister, Patricia Vaughn of Dublin, Virginia; and brothers, John Pete Turner of Roanoke, Virginia and Issiah Hockett of New Jersey. Doug was preceded in death by his mother; two infant siblings; step son - Patrick Wedel and step-daughter Debbie Wedel. Juan Manuel Burciaga-Rodriguez, 69 passed away at home July 18, 2023. He was born March 8, 1954 in Morieleno, Chihuahua Mexico to Cruz Burciaga and Exiquia Arrieta Rodriguez.

He had a large loving family that consisted of his wife, Cheri (Lewis) who preceded him in death; his twin sister Juana Burciaga-Rodriguez; other siblings, Rafael Burciaga-Rodriguez, Celestino Burciaga-Rodriguez, Alejandra Burciaga-Rodriguez, Aureliza Burciaga-Rodriguez, Clara Maria Burciaga-Rodriguez and Rosa Burciaga-Rodriguez; 35 nieces and nephews and numerous other family members.

Juan had a lifelong passion for baseball who was a talented Minor league baseball player. &nbsp;He enjoyed spending time with his great friends. He profoundly missed being able to spend more time with his family.

He retired from the City of Hutchinson where he worked 31 years.&nbsp;

Juan was a very hard working, generous, amazing man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was born March 8, 1954 in Morieleno, Chihuahua Mexico to Cruz Burciaga and Exiquia Arrieta Rodriguez.He had a large loving family that consisted of his wife, Cheri (Lewis) who preceded him in death; his twin sister Juana Burciaga-Rodriguez; other siblings, Rafael Burciaga-Rodriguez, Celestino Burciaga-Rodriguez, Alejandra Burciaga-Rodriguez, Aureliza Burciaga-Rodriguez, Clara Maria Burciaga-Rodriguez and Rosa Burciaga-Rodriguez; 35 nieces and nephews and numerous other family members.Juan had a lifelong passion for baseball who was a talented Minor league baseball player. &nbsp;He enjoyed spending time with his great friends. He profoundly missed being able to spend more time with his family.He retired from the City of Hutchinson where he worked 31 years.&nbsp; Juan was a very hard working, generous, amazing man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.Cremation has taken place. Robert Osborn, 66, passed away July 18, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born in Kinsley, December 30, 1956. He graduated from Buhler High School in 1975. He found his way to Wray &amp; Sons Roofing, where he was a loyal worker for 35 years.&nbsp; On April 5, 1996, he married the love of his life Peggy Osborn. They have been together for 33 years.&nbsp; Robert enjoyed time with his wife, NASCAR, quiet evenings on the patio, woodworking, and time with his grandkids. His fondest memory was spending time and laughing with his wife, Peggy.&nbsp; Robert's proudest family moment was watching his grandkids grow up through pictures and in person. His greatest accomplishment was the work he did to his house after they moved in. He enjoyed Church, home, Colorado, planting flowers, and his dog, Princess.&nbsp; Robert would like to be remembered most for "hoping that sometime in life I might have said something good that changed a persons life for the good, and that they all will believe in The Lord Jesus Christ." She is the daughter of Kenneth H. Nelson, Jr, and Dayla (Dodson) Nelson. Growing up LeNae was a definite tomboy and enjoyed climbing trees, playing in the dirt, going to work with her dad in the gasfield and playing with her cousins and her friends. LeNae was baptized as a young teenager at the Christian Church in Florence. Her school years included Chase County Elementary, then Marion County during her high school years and graduated from Peabody High School in 2005. She went on to obtain her CNA, and then CMA license. In 2007, LeNae and Shaun Nelty had a son, Ian Morris, who was the pride and joy of her life. After Ian was born in 2007, she worked as a CNA/CMA at Peabody and Hillsboro. 

She married Josh Clevenger in 2013 and added son Bailey and daughter Emily to her family. LeNae was all about family - and once you were family, you were always family. Although this marriage ended in divorce - family was still family. LeNae went back to school and got her LPN license and graduated in 2021 from Flint Hills Community College in Emporia. Soon after, LeNae and her son Ian, moved to Enid OK. There, she worked as an LPN for Carter Healthcare as a Home Health nurse. She loved her job and her clients and began making plans to study for her RN degree. Enid is also where she met the love of life, Shannon Willson.&nbsp; LeNae and Shannon were so in love and thrilled to have found each other and were busy planning and looking forward to the rest of their lives together.

LeNae was a caregiver at heart, loving her family, her extended family, and her friends - and her clients. She loved her pets. She was always bringing stray “anything and everything” home - from snakes to birds to cats to puppies! She loved taking care of them. She also loved to travel, kayak, garden, can, fish, camp and just anything outdoors. She loved taking care of her family, and watching Ian and Bailey grow up, do well in school, and play sports and other activities.

She is survived by Shannon Willson, of the home, her mother, Dayla Nelson of Florence, father Kenny Nelson of Marion, children Ian Nelty of Enid, and Bailey Clevenger of Boston, MA, and her sister Christina Nelson of Kansas City, and Grandmother Judy Dodson, Emporia, and a host of many extended family and friends.

LeNae was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, “Grandma Barb” and grandpa, Kenneth Nelson, Sr., her maternal grandparents, Dale and Jeris Dodson, great grandmas Goldie Dodson and Clarice Hale, stepfather, Greg Troxell, uncle, Keith Nelson, aunt, Connie Dodson Reid, and cousin, Jeris Wunderlich.

Patricia’s life began on March 17, 1938, in Kansas City. She is the daughter of Don and Irene (Rindt) McCoy. Patricia was united in marriage to Richard Uhlig on September 26, 1959, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kansas City.

She was a special education schoolteacher for several years while her husband completed his medical school training and later was the office manager for his medical practice. Patricia was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington and had participated in ELCA women. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and served on the Herington School Board for years. Patricia enjoyed owning her gift shop “OMG Gifts” in downtown Herington as much for the fun things she sold as for the chance to visit with everyone who came in the shop.

&nbsp;She and Richard enjoyed travelling and seeing the world together. Her greatest joy was her family especially her husband of 63 years Dr. Richard Uhlig, DO of Herington; her two children Jerri (Kurt) Kemble of Lawrence and Richard ( Dr. Heather) Uhlig of Pordenone, Italy; grandchildren Max Kemble and Hanna ( Mick) Dalton, both of Lawrence and Logan and Jett Uhlig of Pordenone, Italy; and her cousins Vonnie Neiderwimmer, Judy Russell, and Sharon Alexander; and family friend Fred Wenthe of Germany.

Evelyn (Schmidt) Hensley passed away peacefully on June 29,2023 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, at the age of 104.

Evelyn was born in Durham Park Township in Marion County, Kansas to Reinhardt and Julia (Nuss) Schmidt, on January 22, 1919. She was baptized into the Christian faith on March 25, 1919. In 1927, the family moved to a farm south of Tampa. Her mother died very unexpectedly two years later, leaving the family devastated.

Evelyn attended elementary and high school in Tampa, Kansas graduating in 1937. As a young woman, she worked in area restaurants and as a housekeeper and cook for a Wichita family. On June 24, 1944, she married James Hensley at St. John's Lutheran Church in Tampa. Once all her children were in school, she worked at Havlik Grocery and George's Market. In later years she worked for the United States Postal Service as a clerk in Tampa and Post Master in Durham. She retired in September 1984 following 22 years of service. In retirement, Evelyn and Jim enjoyed winters in Weslaco, Texas until he died in 1986. With the help of her children, Evelyn continued to be a Snowbird for many years.

She was a devoted wife, mother, Sunday School and VBS teacher, 4-H leader, hospital Pink Lady and volunteer EMT. She was a life long Lutheran with membership at St. John's, Tampa and Trinity Lutheran, Winfield. In 2003, Evelyn moved to Winfield, Kansas to be closer to her family. At the age of 99 she discontinued her favorite hobby of sewing quilts for missions.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Gary Utt, granddaughter Kelly (Utt) Naegele and her seven siblings: Esther Schmidt, Ruth Klein, Harry Schmidt, Edna Vajnar, Ida Backhus, Frieda Klein, and Reinhardt Schmidt.

She is survived by her children: Jim (Lisa) Hensley of McKinney, Texas, Rita Hensley (Charles Quinn), Pam (Lawrence) Moreno and Julie Utt all of Winfield, Kansas. Grandchildren: Charles (Danielle) Quinn Jr., Benjamin Quinn, David (Mary) Bruner and John Utt. Great grandchildren: Elasah Quinn, Micah Quinn, Hananiah Quinn, Addy Bruner, Shawn Naegele (Renee Padilla), Ryan Naegele, Aria Utt and Dawson Utt. Karen L. Thompson, 73, died July 22, 2023, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, KS. She was born February 28, 1950, in Great Bend, KS, to Russell Lee and Arline Lucille (Byers) Thompson.

Karen was a 1968 graduate of Great Bend High School. She attended Salt City Business College and Hutchinson Community College, formerly Hutchinson Community Junior College. She was employed as a Senior Data Entry Operator at Eaton Hydraulics and Far-Mar-Co/Farmland Industries, both located in Hutchinson, KS. In 1990, Karen began a career in the insurance industry, working at various insurance agencies located in the Hutchinson area, and retired with many years of service.

She was a member of the Mid-Kansas Insurance Association, serving as the president from 2003 to 2004. Karen was also a member of the National Council of Insurance Women. She attended the First Christian Church in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp;

Family was most important to Karen. She enjoyed needlework, crochet, and knitting and shared her artwork with family and friends. Karen loved animals, especially cats. She enjoyed spending time with her sister at her home and her many animals. Karen had a cherished group of friends with whom she participated in numerous activities.

She is survived by: her sister, Janis (Robert) Battey of Hutchinson, KS; brother, Kirk (Stephanie) Thompson of Topeka, KS; nieces, Kim (Dan) Oborny and Mandy (Paul) Schroeppel; two great-nieces; three great-nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary. Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 31, 2023, at the Great Bend City Cemetery, 4500 Broadway, Great Bend, KS. She was employed as a Senior Data Entry Operator at Eaton Hydraulics and Far-Mar-Co/Farmland Industries, both located in Hutchinson, KS. In 1990, Karen began a career in the insurance industry, working at various insurance agencies located in the Hutchinson area, and retired with many years of service.She was a member of the Mid-Kansas Insurance Association, serving as the president from 2003 to 2004. Karen was also a member of the National Council of Insurance Women. She attended the First Christian Church in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp;Family was most important to Karen. She enjoyed needlework, crochet, and knitting and shared her artwork with family and friends. Karen loved animals, especially cats. She enjoyed spending time with her sister at her home and her many animals. Karen had a cherished group of friends with whom she participated in numerous activities.She is survived by: her sister, Janis (Robert) Battey of Hutchinson, KS; brother, Kirk (Stephanie) Thompson of Topeka, KS; nieces, Kim (Dan) Oborny and Mandy (Paul) Schroeppel; two great-nieces; three great-nephews; and one great-great-nephew.Karen was preceded in death by her parents.The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary. Mauri A. Zumalt, 31, of Nickerson, died July 21, 2023, at her home in Nickerson. She was born March 3, 1992, in Wichita, to Keith and Betty (Beeney) Zumalt.

Mauri graduated from Pleasantview Academy, Hutchinson, and Hutchinson Community College with an associates’ degree. She had a wide array of interests. She studied biochemical engineering at K-State University, and had a vast interest in science, where she received many awards.

Mauri loved Colorado and always had a dream to move there. She would spend her time painting landscapes, mountains and rivers. She spent every summer of her childhood and most of adulthood going to Colorado with her family and spend every day on the river and in the mountains.

She knew how to speak German and some French. Mauri had a talent for writing and enjoyed writing books and poetry. She could play guitar, piano, and the harmonica. Perhaps, one of Mauri’s favorite pastimes, was rescuing and taking care of her animals. She loved her rescue ferret, Gaby and her dog Autum.

Mauri is survived by: parents, Betty and Keith Zumalt, Nickerson; siblings, Megan, Quentin, and Mandy Zumalt, Nickerson; grandmother, Karen Zumalt; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and boyfriend, Joseph ‘Joe’ Tuszynski, Lyons.

She was preceded in death by: her maternal grandparents; grandfather, Kyle Zumalt; and aunt, Sally Bennett.

Cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary. Friends may sign the book from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Larry E. Dossett, 61, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at his residence. He had been battling cancer for the past three years.&nbsp;

Larry was born on June 9, 1962, in McPherson, KS, the son of Anson William and Eleanor Elaine (Newman) Dossett. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1980 and furthered his education at Kansas State University and Garden City Community College.&nbsp;

He was a bull rider in the rodeo circuit for 25 years. He also worked in fabrication at Moridge Manufacturing for 15 years and was a cook at McDonalds for 30 years.

He attended the McPherson Free Methodist Church.

On July 16, 2005, Larry was united in marriage to Pauline M. Johnson at the McPherson Free Methodist Church.&nbsp;

Survivors include: his loving wife, Pauline of the home; father, Anson (Peggy) Dossett of McPherson, KS; a brother, Keith Dossett of McPherson, KS; two sisters, Darla (Jeff) Jenkins of Las Cruces, NM and Susan Dossett of McPherson, KS; a brother-in-law, John Johnson of McPherson, KS; three nephews; three nieces; one great-nephew; and many more extended family members and friends.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Dossett; parents-in-law, J. Dean and Shirley Johnson; and brother-in-law, Ronald J. Johnson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Journey Mennonite Church with Pastor Jim Ostlund officiating.&nbsp;

Lawrence Duncan “Larry” DeCou, 83, died July 19, 2023, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born July 15, 1940, in Lindsborg, to Donald Frank and Marguerite (Meyer) DeCou.

Larry graduated from Manhattan High School in 1958 and Kansas State University in 1962. For 13 years, he taught woodworking at Central Junior High School before embarking on a new career as a manager at Kightlinger Lumber and later in sales for Star Lumber. Larry enjoyed antique cars, collecting clocks, and woodworking. He designed and constructed most of the furniture in his home. For 60 years, he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On July 27, 1963, he married Karen Sue Jester, in Manhattan.

Larry is survived by: his wife of 60 years, Karen; son, Mark DeCou; daughters, Lori Bryan (Darrell) and Mindy Hayes (Eric); grandchildren, Rachel DeCou, Riley DeCou, Zachery Bryan, Abigail Bryan, Gwyneth Hayes, and Barrett Hayes; and great-grandson, Derek.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Donald Frank DeCou, Jr., and Robert Duane DeCou; and daughter-in-law, Shelli Ann DeCou.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 7, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will follow in the McPherson City Cemetery. Robert Lester “Bob” Burns, 78, died July 21, 2023, surrounded by family, at his home in  Wichita. He was born July 12, 1945, in Wichita, to John Raymond Horney and Bertha Naomi (Cavanee) Burns.  

Bob graduated from Wichita East High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University.  He worked in law enforcement most of his life, retiring from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department after 27 years.  Bob was a charter member of Wichita, Kansas FOP Lodge #5 and the “Blue Knights”.  He enjoyed basketball, riding his motorcycle, and woodworking.  Bob was a huge Green Bay Packers fan. He never missed a game dressed with his cheese head, cheese tie, and Nelson jersey. Above all though, he was his family’s greatest fan; Bob loved his family unconditionally.  His grandchildren and great-grandchildren always knew Papa would be there for them, in both the peaks and valleys of life. 

On July 23, 1977, he married Sharon Reese, in Wichita.  

Bob is survived by:  his wife of 46 years, Sharon; children, Kristina Reed (Matthew), Kimberly Jill  Diehm, and Robert Michael Burns (Sarah); grandchildren, Amanda Bolain (Greg), Emily Herrera (Fernando), Victoria Arenas (Jason), Cody Burns, Payton Burns (Kyli), Hayley Burns, Sydney Burns, Maxx Diehn, Adrianna Mains, Alex Mains (Jordan), and Michael Mains; great-grandchildren, Collin Bolain, Liberty Bolain, Everly Bolain, Talyn Jamieson, Joseph Herrera, Jazlynn Herrera, Jenavieve Herrera, Aspen Herrera, Hudson Arenas, Brooklyn Achilles, Jameson Mains, Jacy Mains, and Beckett Burns; bonus sons and daughters, Mark Mains, Dennis Sanders, David Spencer, and Erica Scofield; siblings, John Horney (Eva), Connie Crow (Fred), and Susan Burdick (Jerry); nieces and nephews, Rachel Swartz (John), Josh Burdick (Celestina), Tammy Cook (Ryan), Robin Dodson (Alan), Lori Wheatley (Gary), M’tika Heibel, John Williams, and Scott Williams.
