Wynona “Nona” Kay (Hawthorne) Murray, born November 15, 1953, to L. Howard Hawthorne and Georgine (Ginn) Hawthorne, passed away on April 25, 2024 in Redmond, Washington. She grew up in Little River, Kansas and moved to Hays with her family in 1970, graduating from Hays High School in 1971.

Nona studied nursing at Fort Hays State University and Advanced Practice Nursing Child and Family Mental Health at the University of Kansas. Her long medical career took her to various places throughout Kansas, Ohio, and Washington.

Nona was a patron of the arts and in her younger years enjoyed camping.

On April 21, 1984 she gave birth to the pride and joy of her life her beautiful daughter Kathleen (Kate) Francis Murray.

Nona is survived by her brothers, Steve (Vicki) Hawthorne of Hays, KS, Lee Hawthorne of Hoisington, KS, step daughters Megan (Marcel) Shoemaker of Bella Vista, AR and Julie (Brian) Nelson of Topeka, KS, nieces Skye (Robert) Bare of Pratt, KS, Erin (Dr. Benjamin) Kinderknecht of Maryville, MO, Carly Hawthorne (Jesse Stockwell) of Colorado Springs, CO, and her best friend and roommate of many years, Pamela Wickenhauser of Redmond, WA. She is also survived by her step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, great nieces and nephews and great-great niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Georgine Hawthorne, her daughter Kate Murray and friend Dennis Franz.

Graveside services are Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. in Bean Cemetery, Little River, KS.

Keith Haskell Sims, 95, was born on May 18, 1929, in Howard, Kansas. He passed away June 4, 2024, in Newton, Kansas with family by his side. He was born to Charles and Theresa (Jontra) Sims.&nbsp;

Keith served with the United States Army stateside and in Guam. Returning home, he went to work for Beech Aircraft, retiring after 40 years, and then worked for Sacks Cab Company.&nbsp;

Keith was a master woodcrafter, taking a plain piece of wood and turning it into a beautiful creation. He loved watching John Wayne westerns and Nascar races. He was known as Mr. Fix it. He loved hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his family and friends.&nbsp;

Keith was a man of unwavering faith and dedication, serving at First Christian Church in Newton, KS, for 54 years. He loved, lived, and cared for his family.&nbsp;

Keith was survived by four daughters, Pamela (Michael) Whalen, Annette (Ron) Alee, Elizabeth (Paul) Jordan, and Irene (Raymond) Stapleford; and one son, David (Victoria) Haviland; grandchildren, John (Stephanie), Christopher (Amanda), Adam (Tiffany), Joseph (Gillian), Stacey (CJ), Nicole (Brandon, Seth, Sarah (Tony), Jessica, Brandon (Shelby), Steven (Haley), Garrett, Austin, Alyssa, Alex, Logan, Aaliyah, Alexis, Ziva, Javier, Christopher Jr., Juliana, Stacey, Ashlynn, Ezra, Bjorn, Ellie, Brooks, Cooper, Karter.&nbsp;

Leona M. Whited Bratcher, 94, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Brookdale, McPherson.&nbsp;

Leona was born on July 26, 1929, near Lindsborg, KS, the daughter of Johan Hjalmar Ernest and Ethel Aurora Christina (Falen) Jacobson.&nbsp; She graduated from Lindsborg High School and attended Bethany College.&nbsp;

She worked at Swick-Guth as a machinist and was a telephone switchboard operator, nurse aid, and shoe dept. manager at Walmart.

On March 21, 1953, Leona was united in marriage to Wayne B. Whited in Lindsborg, KS.&nbsp; He died February 27, 1993.&nbsp; She married B. Ray Bratcher on April 3, 1997, in McPherson, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on June 18, 2022.

Survivors include six children, Gary Wayne Whited (Arnell) of Hutchinson, KS, Ron Whited (Carolyn) of Grifton, NC, Wanda Weyand (Robert) of McPherson, KS, Mike Bratcher (Lou Rice) of Houston, TX, Kent Bratcher (Rhonda) of Yukon, OK, and Gary Bratcher (Donna Taylor) of Dallas, TX; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and four brothers, Henry, John, Vernon, and Delbert Jacobson.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 13, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg.

Dr. Charlotte Anne Siemens, 64, died peacefully in North Newton, Kansas, under hospice care on May 31, 2024, surrounded by family.

Charlotte was born on January 29, 1960, to Richard and Frances Siemens. Although she would boast that her birthday was Kansas Day, Charlotte was actually born in Seattle, Washington. &nbsp;She grew up in Lyons, Kansas, with younger brother, Douglas Todd.

After graduating from Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas, Charlotte attended medical school at the University of Kansas, completing a residency in Wichita and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin.&nbsp;

Charlotte began dating David Sprunger in 1978, and they were married by Rev. Marvin Zehr on June 25, 1988. The couple raised three children: Samuel Warren, Jacob William, and Anna Elizabeth.

Charlotte dedicated her career to working with children, young adults, and their families, practicing child and adolescent psychiatry in Fargo, North Dakota, for 28 years. When she retired from full-time practice, she was running a partial-hospitalization program for Sanford Medical Center where she also enjoyed working with medical students. She was proud to receive the James E. Mitchell, M.D., outstanding teacher award in 2019. In 2020, after Charlotte and David returned to Kansas, Charlotte worked part-time at Prairie View. Even as her health failed, she hoped to return to practice, so she could follow her patients’ progress.

Charlotte took great pleasure in cooking and baking, especially as a creative and social activity. In Fargo, she participated in a gourmet club with like-minded women who gathered monthly to prepare elaborate meals and enjoy each other’s company. Each summer she looked forward to using her garden produce to prepare gallons of salsa and Italian sauce. One year, she entered some of her salsas in the Cass County fair and emerged with a blue ribbon for tomato salsa and a Reserve Champion award for her peach salsa. As she and David designed their new house in North Newton, she made sure it featured a spacious kitchen, optimized for group cooking.&nbsp;

Charlotte felt a special connection to the natural world. She tried to walk daily, and her favorite indoor places were full of plants. Time spent hiking and fishing at the family cabin in southwest Colorado brought her particular joy. In Fargo, she participated in city xeriscape programs and one year even arranged for an adjusted work schedule in order to attend classes for certification as a master gardener. Family trips were not complete without visits to local botanical gardens. It is not surprising that she and David were married outdoors with Wichita’s Botanica in its early summer glory. In her final moments, she was covered with a quilt depicting irises and butterflies with a border of sunflowers, her favorite flower.

Charlotte was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by husband, David Sprunger (North Newton, Kansas); children Sam (Ellie) Sprunger (Maple Grove, Minnesota), Jacob (Alžběta Lutzká) Sprunger (Hustopeče, Czech Republic), Anna Sprunger (Middleton, Wisconsin); grandchild Harvey Sprunger; and brother Doug (Lu Ann Zook) Siemens (Newton, Kansas).&nbsp;

A memorial service will be held June 22, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Bethel College Mennonite Church, preceded by a private inurnment service. The memorial service will be live streamed.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Bethel College.

Anna Jane DeWater (Daines), 80, of South Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away on June 3, 2024.

She was born on May 11, 1944, in Canon City, Colorado to John &amp; Beatrice (Epperson) Daines. After the death of her mother, Anna came back to Hutchinson in 1947 to be raised by her grandparents among their own 14 children.

In 1965 Anna met Russell (Bud) DeWater. They married Oct 14, 1967. Anna had four children from a prior marriage and welcomed a child in November 1969. Together they raised all five children.

Anna was a homemaker as the children were growing up and did the bookkeeping for The Independent Oil Company, a service station she co-owned with her husband, in South Hutchinson. Later in life, she baked bread for Sub &amp; Stuff Sandwich shop followed by housekeeping at &nbsp;Hutchinson Hospital for seventeen years until her retirement.&nbsp;

Anna is preceded in death by both parents, brother Lee Daines and daughter Darla Healey-Eckhoff.&nbsp;

She is survived by husband Russell, daughter Kimberley Howard of Hutchinson, son Johnnie Healey of Hutchinson, son Mike (Brenda) Healey of Bel Aire, and daughter Lana Bichet of Newton, &nbsp;nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, &nbsp;great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial is being planned.&nbsp;

Anna Jane DeWater |1944-2024|

Terry M. Fisher, 76, of Hutchinson, died May 31, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 24, 1947, in Nashville, KS, to James D. and Mary A. (Vierthaler) Fisher.

Terry graduated from Nickerson High School in 1965 and later from McPherson College. During his life, he worked at the City of Hutchinson and then in sales for Water Products, McPherson for over 20 years. Terry cherished his family; he loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing softball. Terry was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. He was very active in his church, participating in RCIA and Adoration.

On November 30, 1966, he married Sharon K. Walters in Hutchinson. They shared over 57 years of marriage before his passing.

During his life, he worked at the City of Hutchinson and then in sales for Water Products, McPherson for over 20 years. Terry cherished his family; he loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing softball. Terry was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. He was very active in his church, participating in RCIA and Adoration.On November 30, 1966, he married Sharon K. Walters in Hutchinson. Julie Ann Galindo, 64, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2024, in Hutchinson. She was born November 6, 1959, in Smith Center Kansas, to Thomas F. and Clarice Elaine (Fiene) Johnson.

On October 30, 1991, Julie married Asuncion Galindo in Chihuahua, Mexico. Julie worked as a waitress, a CNA for various nursing homes, a cook for the Moose Lodge and she also worked as a debt collector for PRA.

As a child, Julie loved playing house and mommy to her dolls. She was baptized as a teenager at First Christian Church and raised her children to know the Lord. She loved animals and always had more than one pet at a time. She loved playing Bingo and an occasional trip to the casino. Julie loved spending time with her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren and always helped them in any way she could. Julie’s kind and loving heart shined bright for all to see. Her family and friends will truly miss her smile and sincere kindness.

Julie is survived by: daughters, Shauna Galindo and Bobbi Jo Ceniceros (Benjamin); son, Thomas Galindo (Kristi), all of Hutchinson; sisters, Jacqueline Roberts, Hutchinson, Jana Galimore, Leavenworth; brother, Mark Johnson (Julie), Hutchinson; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Glenn A. Mannebach, 78, died June 5, 2024, at Good Samaritan Retirement Home, Hutchinson. He was born August 5, 1945 to Albert and Martha (Mertes) Mannebach, he was one of 7 children.&nbsp;

Glenn graduated from Andale High School and continued his education at Wichita State and then Kansas University where he graduated with a degree as a pharmacist. His career path took him to Walgreens in Topeka where he eventually retired. Glenn loved to travel and loved nature of all kinds. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Glenn will be lovingly remembered by his brother, Dale (Kate) Mannebach; his niece, Michelle (Rod) Green; and many other nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by; his parents, Albert and Martha Mannebach; siblings, Bonnie Kuhn, Marilyn (Shortie) Waggoner, Aleda “Lettie” (Vic) Goerke, Nila (Jim) Parker, Laura (Al) Mohr.&nbsp;

With profound sorrow and yet immense gratitude for the time shared, we announce the passing of Gibbs Denning Schmalzried. &nbsp;Gibby was born in north Kansas City on July 31, 2017, leaving this world on June 5, 2024. Gibbs, affectionately known by many nicknames including Gibby, Gibby Dean, Deaner, and Little Mike, was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him. His cherubic, squishy cheeks and infectious smile made every greeting a joyous occasion.

Gibby never needed words to communicate; his expressions and spirit spoke volumes. He had an uncanny ability to convey his moods, from the delightful thrill of companionship to the urgent need for his beloved Mea, his ever-faithful dog. A lover of sunshine and giggle-inducing zerberts, Gibby's happiness was as radiant and warming as the sun itself.

Gibbs excelled in the art of relaxation, a true lounge rat who cherished snuggles with family. Television provided Gibbs with a window to joy. He was an avid fan of nostalgic shows like "Alf," "The Brady Bunch," "Full House," and "Little House on the Prairie," but his true comfort came from watching "Daniel Tiger," a show that reflected his own gentle, yet vibrant nature.

Music was a universal language for Gibbs. He adored Wynonna's songs, particularly "Flies on the Butter," and thrived in his adaptive music class in Wichita, where Mrs. Aubrie and Mr. Kenny embraced him with open arms, enriching his life through Zoom. And while he might have had mixed feelings about his mother Amber’s constant serenades, her voice was a constant, comforting presence in his life.

Some of his favorite moments were spent playing video games with his brother Garreth and sharing suckers/popsicles with his sister Rhiesa. He also loved spending time in the sun with Melissa, and no one looked better in sunglasses than Gibby.

Gibby’s life, though brief, was a masterclass in unconditional love. His pure, radiant spirit transcended any limitations, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He taught us the beauty of simple joys and the profoundness of unspoken bonds.

We are forever grateful for the time we had with Gibbs, whose essence was as pure and bright as the sun. His memory will continue to illuminate our lives, reminding us of the profound impact of love and the joy found in every smile and snuggle.

The family is grateful for those of you who took the time to get to know sweet Gibby. &nbsp;We don’t regret not sharing him with those who didn’t take the time to know his precious soul. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Gibbs "Gibby" Denning Schmalzried |2017-2024|

On Friday, May 31, 2024, Julene G. Allen (Cabeceiras), loving wife, mother of four, grandmother of 18, and great-grandmother of two, passed away at the age of 70.

Julene was born in March 1954 in California, and was raised by her parents, Sonia (Crouch) Yutzy and Donald Cabeceiras. For much of her life, she worked in the customer service field, which stemmed from her love of helping people and talking on the phone. Julene was, of course, also dedicated to raising her four children. She married Raymond George Allen in October 1996, and they resided in Haven, Kansas until her death.

Julene had a passion for being involved in her kids’ and grandchildrens’ lives. She frequently attended sports, music, and, celebratory events, supporting all those that she loved and considered family. She was an avid Raiders football fan, and often shared her strong opinions on that and many other topics that were on her mind. She was known for being strong-willed, optimistic, and kind-hearted by so many; she always saw the best in people.

Julene is preceded in death by her father, Donald Cabeceiras, and husband, Eric Williams Sr.&nbsp; &nbsp;She is survived by her mother, Sonia, husband, George, sister, Roxanne Hilbert, children: Eric (Andrea) Williams, Donald (Corn) Corcoran, Dennene (Don) Conley, and Katy Schmidt, 18 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and countless more who loved her.

Brandi Nichole McCurdy departed this life at the age of 41 years old. She was born October 2, 1982, to Carin and Vernon McCurdy in Newton, KS. She accepted Christ into her life as she was a true Christian.&nbsp;

Brandi is loved by so many people. But most of all Brandi loved her family. Even through down times, she might get mad, but she would never stop loving her family no matter what. She loved her daughter Echo so very much. Not a day went by her daughter wasn’t mentioned. She would always say I am so proud of Echo. Her grandkids Ella and Emma were her whole heart and loved them so very much. She would protect the ones she loved even if she was mad at them. She was her own self, she had her own slang, for example: I miss your freaking face, I love you big, or she would laugh if she thought something was funny and she would say, “your stupid”. But in a nice way. There were so many, but it was the way she said. Let’s talk about her laugh. No one had a laugh like Brandi. You always knew when she was around without seeing her just by her laugh. Brandi didn’t care what people thought of her. The only time that she did care is if it involved her loved ones. She made sarcastic remarks after everything you said to her which made the conversation interesting. She would always make you laugh and even harder when she started laughing. We can go on and on about how much she is a joy to be around but the memories that our family have made in 41 years of her life will live on and never be forgotten.

Brandi’s Fiancé Jason was her rock, and she would say. She loved him more than anyone she had ever had a relationship with. The kind of love she had for him was different. She called him her husband and she would always say, “That is my man, my rock, my husband. And when he isn’t around, she says how lonely she felt without him, depressed cause she misses him and always plans to surprise him when he comes home. They did everything together. They had true love, and that kind of love will always live on through Jason’s heart and memories they have shared. They shared a dog together that she loved so much. Sam, she loved that dog.

Brandi had hobbies or wait should we call them obsessions or even fetishes. Pens, she had more pens than anyone she knew. Every color, and style. She would know if a pen was taken. And she will say, “did you take my pen or pens? As her daughter Echo would say. “NO, laughing about it because they are sitting in a drawer. She loved her pens. Notebooks, where to get started on that one. She loved writing. She will just sit there and write what comes to her head even if it is someone’s name. She will write something little on one page and start a new one or a new notebook. Purses, she has purses. Lots of them. She loves her some purses, and most of them have something in them. Bags, little or big she must have them. And of course, most of them have stuff in them as well. And remind you she never gets rid of them. She keeps them all. Clothes, she has so many clothes she can have her own clothes store, but she just adds on to what she already has.&nbsp;

Brandi passed away Thursday May 30th at 4:16pm. She died from Toxic Pancreatitis. She was very sick. She had been dealing with this illness for a couple of months and as she would tell her family she was tired of being in pain. She was tired of being sick all the time. She didn’t have energy and she just wanted to sleep. Well Brandi, you are now free from being in pain, sick, and you are in a better place. You will live on through memories and you will be missed terribly, as you would say we will miss your face. We love you BIG! We will see you again in another life!

Barbara Blanche Buskirk was born September 30, 1937, to Wm. Alexander (Alex) Richards and Dorothy (Dresher) Richards in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; Barbara died May 23, 2024, age 86, in Marquette, KS, where she resided at the Riverview Estates.

Barbara’s childhood years through high school were in Hays, KS. She excelled academically and in music, graduating valedictorian of her high school class. With scholarships, she attended and graduated from the University of Kansas and served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica.

The Peace Corps experience was the highlight of her life and further instilled a desire to serve and aid internationally. Barbara would fondly recall meeting Robert F. Kennedy, brother to the President of the United States, and Sargent Shriver, Director of the Peace Corps, as they visited the inaugural sites of the Peace Corps in the early 1960s.

Barbara continued her education in anthropology and archeology at a graduate level at the University of Kansas, Mexico, and at Exeter in England. And outside of formal structured education, Barbara traveled with her parents for archeological digs in Southwest United States and Mexico.

Barbara’s life was surrounded by her Native American heritage and belief system.&nbsp; Her love of nature, the imperative of protecting the earth, climate and all of creation were primary influences for her decision making. Barbara loved animals, and they were important companions to her at every stage of her life. From a 40 year old mare at the western Kansas farm of her father’s family, to the milk cows at the central Kansas farm of her other grandparents, and her faithful loving cat, Victoria, by her side in the final years of her life, she lived in harmony with nature and thrived in those relationships.

Barbara later taught at Baker University and Ottawa University in Kansas.&nbsp; On December 27, 1981, Barbara married Leroy Buskirk, and they made their home near Lindsborg, KS. They raised a big garden and marketed produce in the area.&nbsp; Both Barbara and Leroy were talented singers and for many years, sang with the Bethany College Oratorio Society in performances of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion.&nbsp; She continued her love of singing until her death.

An important mission of Barbara’s, as long as she was able to knit, was, with the help of others she recruited, to make dozens of pairs of mittens for children related to the Haskell Indian Nation in Lawrence, Kansas.&nbsp; Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lindsborg, where she sang in the choir and participated in study groups and worship.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leroy who died June, 1995.

Barbara was buried in the Heart Land Prairie Cemetery, New Cambria, Kansas.&nbsp; Notes of condolence may be sent to Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson, KS.

Lloyd Clarence Erickson, 79, of Roxbury, KS, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Angel Arms, McPherson.&nbsp; He was a retired farmer and also deputy sheriff for the McPherson County Sheriff Department.

Lloyd was born on February 20, 1945, in Lindsborg, KS, the son of Clarence and Geneva (Anderson) Erickson.&nbsp; He graduated from Roxbury High School.&nbsp; He served in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War.

On January 21, 1971, Lloyd was united in marriage to Barbara Lee Lawson in Lindsborg, KS.&nbsp; They were married for 39 years prior to Barbara’s passing on October 16, 2010.

He was a member of the Roxbury United Parish.

Survivors include his two sons, David Blosser of McPherson, KS and Kevin Erickson of Roxbury, KS; a grandson, Dylan Blosser of McPherson, KS; siblings, Leland (Anna) Erickson of Roxbury, KS, Helen (Dennis) Moennich of McPherson, KS, Larry Erickson of McPherson, KS, Darlene Nelson of Mt. Hope, KS, and Lauren Erickson of Lindsborg, KS; and many extended family members and friends.

Judy (Koehn) Pauls, 77, of Hutchinson, Kansas passed away on 24 May, 2024 at Sunshine Meadows in Buhler, Kansas.

Judy was born 2 November 1946 to Elton Simon Koehn and Martha J (Wedel) Koehn in Newton, Kansas; they preceded her in death. &nbsp;She graduated from Halstead High School in 1964, attended Marymount College for one year, then completed her Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education at Wichita State University. &nbsp;She married Roger Pauls on 23 December 1966; he preceded her in death. &nbsp;They are survived by one daughter, Jennifer Pauls (Bryce Kuhlman) of Gilbert, Arizona. &nbsp;She is also survived by her sister Kathy Koehn (Mick Groom), brothers Steve Koehn (Jodi Koehn) and Rob Koehn (Carol Koehn), nieces Jesse (Josh), Leah, Emily (Zach), &amp; Karli (Jason), six great-nephews, and a great-niece. &nbsp;Judy later entered into a committed relationship with Steven Howell; he survives her as does his mother Marge (his father Mel preceded her in death), son Jeff (Kaylee) &amp; granddaughter Audrey. &nbsp;

After graduation, Judy started her career teaching Special Education at Sunflower School. &nbsp;Soon after, she was hired to teach fourth grade at Moundridge Elementary School. &nbsp;Two years later, she got the opportunity she had been waiting for, teaching first graders, and she jumped at it. &nbsp;“Mrs. Pauls” loved her students and enjoyed watching them grow up and teaching their children. &nbsp;

In 1980, she and Roger bought 80 acres of land in the Sand Hills outside of Burrton and designed &amp; built their dream home. &nbsp;They had a pond, wild blackberries, and a large garden that produced huge harvests that Judy cooked, canned, froze, and shared with family and friends. &nbsp;With room for a big dining table, Judy took over hosting holiday meals for the extended family. &nbsp;She was an excellent cook, known for her butterhorn rolls (recipe from Martha Koehn), tomato tart (recipe from Martha Stewart), and many other tasty dishes. &nbsp;She shared the love and supported her daughter’s (and other family members’) cooking habits with many gifts of quality tools, cookbooks, and sage advice.

Judy was a master of needlepoint and other crafts. &nbsp;Christmas was definitely her favorite holiday and she stitched &amp; crafted countless ornaments/decorations to fill her home and give away.

Roger, the first love of her life, died unexpectedly in 1985.

A few years later, Judy met Steve Howell, the second love of her life. &nbsp;She took a sabbatical from teaching and then early retirement as they transitioned to living in Bella Vista, AR. &nbsp;There, they enjoyed making new friends, golfing, and time on the water. &nbsp;

They moved to Hutchinson in 2005 to be closer to family. &nbsp;Judy and her sister enjoyed taking cooking classes at the Cook’s Nook, eating out, and planning menus for the big holiday get-togethers that she happily resumed hosting. &nbsp;Every summer she would corral the family into coming over and helping “put up corn.” &nbsp;They’d get twelve dozen ears and everyone would help shuck, strip, and pack the corn into bags, frozen for Thanksgiving, Christmas &amp; Easter.

When her parents passed, she and Kathy spent a year preparing for their estate sale - meticulously going through the house. &nbsp;It was an emotional time, made easier because they were sisters. &nbsp;

Though she didn’t have students anymore (or grandchildren… sorry, Mom) she had a special place in her heart for her local grand-nephews (Henry, Luke, Sam, Quenton, &amp; Lincoln) and loved seeing them &amp; planning special treats when they visited. &nbsp;

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024, at First Mennonite Church of Christian, 719 S. Christian Avenue, Moundridge. &nbsp;Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

Judy (Koehn) Pauls |1946-2024|

Monique M. Ratzlaff, 84, died June 3, 2024, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born in Rousset, A’Con, Eure-Normandy, France, to Maurice and Olga Joffrette (Jaffeux) Dieu.&nbsp;

Monique graduated from a Catholic school in France in 1956. She owned Kitchen Creations in the mall for over 15 years. She later became a cafeteria assistant at Trinity Catholic School. Monique enjoyed bowling, ceramics, stain glass, jewelry, crocheting, and cooking. She collected Pez and Hummel figurines.

She married Elbert A. Hurd in 1956, after meeting in France where Elbert was stationed with the United States Air Force. He died February 9, 1991. On May 7, 1999, she married Larry D. Ratzlaff, in Hutchinson, KS. They shared over 25 years of marriage prior to her death.

Monique is survived by: husband, Larry D. Ratzlaff of Hutchinson; daughters, Patricia (Bradley) Unruh of Hutchinson, Pamela (Mike) Durkin of St. Petersburg, FL; son, Michael (Patricia) Hurd of Bartlesville, OK; grandchildren, Cheryl (Jeremy) Gonsalves of Hutchinson, Wesley (Kadrian) Hurd of Bartlesville, OK, Jordan Roth of Hutchinson, Hunter Baker of St. Petersburg FL, and Monique (Eric Heller) Jones of Bartlesville, OK; 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Yvette Siour, Andrée Stephan, and Mary-Therese Messager, all of France; stepsons, Anthony (Susie) Ratzlaff, and Joseph (Jess) Ratzlaff, both of Hutchinson; daughter in-law, Vickie Hurd of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Maurice and Olga; husband, Elbert A. Hurd; and son, Gary Hurd.

Funeral service will be 11:30 Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Inspire Church. Burial will be 2:00 Saturday, June 8, 2024 in Sterling Community Cemetery. She was born in Rousset, A’Con, Eure-Normandy, France, to Maurice and Olga Joffrette (Jaffeux) Dieu.&nbsp;Monique graduated from a Catholic school in France in 1956. She owned Kitchen Creations in the mall for over 15 years. She later became a cafeteria assistant at Trinity Catholic School. Monique enjoyed bowling, ceramics, stain glass, jewelry, crocheting, and cooking. She collected Pez and Hummel figurines.She married Elbert A. Hurd in 1956, after meeting in France where Elbert was stationed with the United States Air Force. He died February 9, 1991. On May 7, 1999, she married Larry D. Ratzlaff, in Hutchinson, KS. They shared over 25 years of marriage prior to her death.Monique is survived by: husband, Larry D. Vera Nadine Graber, 81, of South Hutchinson, died on June 3, 2024, at The Arbors-Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born on May 28, 1943, at the home of her parents Willard and Della Goering Wedel in Pretty Prairie.

Vera graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1961 and Hutchinson Junior College in 1963. &nbsp;On July 19, 1963, she married Gary Graber at the Pretty Prairie Mennonite Church. &nbsp;They moved to Manhattan where Gary finished his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, while Vera worked for the K-State Agronomy department. &nbsp;In 1966 the family moved to Nickerson. &nbsp;Vera was a homemaker until 1974 when she was hired by the Nickerson Bank. She retired from the bank in 1998.

Vera thoroughly loved gardening and cared for many plants in her backyard greenhouse. &nbsp;She enjoyed cooking and other crafts such as sewing, counted cross-stitch and painting. &nbsp;She won a blue ribbon at the Kansas State Fair for her painting of a barn. &nbsp;Vera was also helpful when Gary was restoring and showing vintage cars.

She is survived by: husband, Gary; son Darin (Andrea Pischnotte) Graber of South Jordan, UT; daughter, Joni (Scott) Oakes of Oklahoma City, OK; son Mike (Angela) Graber of Hoschton, GA; and grandchildren, Landon and Macie Graber.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alice Graber; and brother, Glen Wedel.

Vera Nadine Graber |1943-2024|

Evelyn Jane Goering Lehman was born January 17, 1929, at a farm in McPherson County, Kansas, to Adina and Christian B. Goering. She was the youngest of nine children. When she was eight, her father sold the farm and bought one five miles east of Newton, Kansas, so her brothers, who were ready for college, could drive to Bethel College each day. Evelyn attended Sunnyside Grade School and Walton Grade School, graduating from eighth grade there. She attended Newton High School in her freshman year, transferring to Mennonite Bible Academy on the college campus for the remainder of her high school studies. In her senior year, she also enrolled at Bethel as a freshman, graduating from the academy and finishing her freshman year in 1946. She graduated from Bethel College with a music education degree in 1949. While a student at Bethel, she met Ralph Lehman, and they married in June of 1949.

Ralph and Evelyn served as directors of a voluntary service unit at Topeka State Hospital in their first year, and after that, Evelyn taught vocal music in Washington, Kansas grade and high schools. Following that experience, they moved to Denver, Colorado, where Ralph entered graduate school. Their sons, Joseph Michael and Ralph Stephen, were born in Denver. They moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, after Ralph secured a position as clinical director of the state hospital there. Later they moved to Smithfield, Ohio, when Ralph was recruited to work at Boy’s Village. Their daughter Christine Ann was born there. Later they moved to Wadsworth, Ohio, when Ralph took a position as director of social services at Summit County Family Services in Akron. Daughter Mary Jolene was born in Wadsworth.

The family moved again in 1968 to the St. Louis area when Ralph became CEO of Edgewood Children’s Center. There, Evelyn embarked on a teaching career and completed graduate studies in early childhood education at Webster University. She taught Kindergarten in the Webster Groves School District for 21 years. During those years, desegregation efforts began, and Evelyn codirected an organization called Bridging the Gap, which recruited public school kindergarten teachers and preschool directors to facilitate the changes. The organization provided parents with lectures on child development curriculum and answered their questions. The lectures were led by professors in early childhood education from local universities. During her 21 years of teaching, she mentored 16 student teachers, many of whom became good friends through the following years.

Evelyn and Ralph retired in 1989. They volunteered at Koinonia Farms in Georgia, travelled abroad to Europe, South America, and Asia, and visited all provinces in Canada and all 50 states. They moved to North Newton in 1992 and enjoyed retirement at Kidron Bethel since 2005. Evelyn volunteered at the Etcetera Shop and Kauffman Museum as well as serving in various capacities at Bethel College Mennonite Church.

Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents; five sisters, Elizabeth Wedel, Amanda Goering, Ann Waltner, Melita Goering, and Luella Stahly; three brothers, Erwin, Eldon, and Jacob Goering; and husband, Ralph. She is survived by her children and their spouses J. Michael and Kathleen Lehman, R. Stephen Lehman and Kathleen Childers, Christine Lehman, and Mary Lehman Neal and Paul Neal, along with 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Evelyn Jane Goering Lehman |1929-2024|

State Representative Leslie “Les” Ray Mason of McPherson, Kansas died Monday, June 3, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita at the age of 69.

Les was born on October 11, 1954, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His parents, Gertrude and Reverend Floyd Mason, moved to Nebraska and later McPherson, Kansas where Les spent most of his childhood.

Les was a graduate of McPherson High School in 1972 and Central Christian College of McPherson in 1974 with a degree in business and marketing. He married Kala Ann Archer on April 3, 1976. They had 3 children, Christopher, Jennifer, and Angela. He initially worked at Green’s Furniture in McPherson and later for W.R. Mill in McPherson as a sales manager. He left WR Mill to start a home-based business, Mason Marketing. This later became The Old Muffin Factory. The company made muffin and pancake mixes that were shipped all over the country. Les and Kala operated a retail store, The Old Muffin Factory, in McPherson for several years. The store closed in 2008 as they transitioned back to shipping the mixes before their retirement in 2018 due to Kala’s cancer. Les and Kala were married for 44 years before Kala lost her battle with cancer in April 2020.

Les met Victoria Runco Paluck in 2020, and they were married on September 3, 2022. The two loved to travel together and spend time in McPherson and Topeka, Kansas, Castle Rock, CO and Scottsdale, Arizona. They had the opportunity to travel to Taiwan together with other members of the Kansas legislature in October 2023. They also enjoyed spending time with friends and family and camping at Kanopolis Lake.&nbsp; They especially enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren and attending their school and sport activities.

Les has been active in the McPherson community as a member of the Kiwanis Club in McPherson, Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way Board. Les was a member of Dick Nichols' campaign for Congress in 1990. Les has been a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives for the 73rd district since 2014. He has served many roles in the House, most recently as Mentor of Freshman members of the House, the House Assistant Majority Leader, and Chair of the Social Services Budget Committee.

He is preceded in death by his late wife, Kala Mason. He is survived by his wife Victoria, his son Christopher (wife Brooke, son Cole) of Hutchinson, KS, daughter Jennifer of McPherson, KS and daughter Angela Brunk (husband Jesse, daughter Danica) of McPherson, KS; Stepson Ryan Paluck (wife Kyla, sons Korbin and Kash). He is also survived by his brother David Mason (wife Peggie).&nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Monday, June 10, 2024, at Countryside Covenant Church, 940 E. Northview Ave., McPherson.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, June 11, at Countryside Covenant Church with Rev. Jon Black officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Karen Sue (Barstow) Liby, of Hutchinson, Kansas, was a loving mother and grandmother and a loyal sister and friend. Karen passed away peacefully in her home on June 2, 2024 at the age of 80, surrounded by loved ones. She was a devoted mother to her children: Curt Liby, of Andover, Kansas, Jamie Bleything, of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Justin (Kara) Liby, of Leawood Kansas. She is survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Karen was born to Waldo and Mary (Freeman) Barstow on November 7, 1943 in Great Bend, Kansas and was one of six sisters: Sally (Gene) Mace, of Peoria, Illinois, Katie (Wes) Reazin, of Hutchinson, Helen (Donald) Douglas, of Sharon Springs, Kansas, Vicki Leiker, of Wallace, Kansas, and Janie (Dick) Russell, of Hutchinson.

Karen was raised in the Wallace County ranching and farming community of Sharon Springs, Kansas. Her parents owned a cattle ranch southwest of town. She graduated from Wallace County High School in 1961. She worked a variety of jobs in her lifetime including as a police dispatcher and meter maid in Great Bend. She held several secretarial positions. Later in her life, Karen felt a calling to enter the nursing profession. She became an RN and worked at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas, for most of her career.

Karen had numerous interests and hobbies throughout her life. She had a real estate agent license and a pilot’s license. She had a knack for tastefully renovating and decorating her homes. Karen enjoyed working in her flower gardens and maintaining her lawn. Walking, reading Western novels, and listening to music were some of her other favorite activities. She was an excellent cook. Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday and she prepared delicious dinners for her family.

She is survived by: her three children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, four sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by: her parents, and sister, Helen.

Karen will be honored at a private Celebration of Life and will rest next to her parents at the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Darwin Laray Bryant, 70, passed away on May 31 in Ellinwood, KS. Darwin was born in Ellinwood, KS on October 19, 1953 to parents Oliver Bryant Jr. &amp; Patricia Joelene (Cossman) Bryant. 

A lifetime Ellinwood resident he graduated from Ellinwood High in 1971. Darwin was a diesel mechanic where he owned and managed a successful repair business south of Ellinwood. A gifted mechanic Darwin was a car and boat enthusiast and even had a boat that ran on diesel fuel. Growing up Darwin spent many weekends at Wilson Lake boating, waterskiing, knee boarding, and time with family.

Survivors include mother, Patricia Joelene Bryant; sons, Jason and wife Sara Bryant and Chad Bryant and fiancee Melissa; sister, Sandra Bryant; grandchildren, Kiley Kaylee, Olivia, &amp; Makynna Bryant and best little dog Budder. Darwin was preceded in death by his father Oliver Bryant Jr.
