Dana Lee Rogers, 73, of Galva, KS, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Angel Arms in McPherson, KS.

Dana was born in McPherson on July 16, 1951, the daughter of Daniel and Nona (Grant) Rivas.

Dana attended Washington Grade School and graduated from McPherson High School in 1969. She then attended Hutchinson Junior College.

She was a member of Galva Community Church.

Through the years Dana worked as a teacher's aide and school secretary for Canton Galva Elementary and Middle School for 34 years until she retired in 2017.

Dana was Saddle Club Queen and enjoyed being a 4 -H leader, china painter, worked with stained glass, leather work and all her crafts. She loved working in her flower garden, loved her animals, enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids activities and her son and grandson race cars. She also enjoyed doing community volunteer work and being a church secretary. She was known as the town brownie maker, and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.

Dana Rivas was united in marriage to Larry Rogers on January 16, 1971. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson, prior to moving to Galva. The couple was blessed with the birth of two sons, Rick and Steven.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; her mother, Nona Rivas of Galva; sons, Rick Rogers of Hutchinson and Steven Rogers of Alva, OK; grandchildren, Austin Rogers and Nathen Rogers; sister, Dawn Thiessen and Mike Gould of Galva; sisters-in-law, Mary Williams and Debbie Rogers, both of Little River, KS; other relatives, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Dana was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Rivas.

Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Chapel in McPherson, KS.

Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2024 at Galva Community Church in Galva, KS with Tony Wedel officiating. Burial to follow in Empire Cemetery, Galva.

Harold C. Thiessen, 94, of Inman, Kansas, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 21, 2024 at the Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born on October 11, 1929 in Hutchinson, to Cornelius H. and Elizabeth (Schierling) Thiessen.

He graduated from Inman High School with the class of 1948. Harold was a crop and livestock farmer and a lifelong resident in the Inman community.

He was united in marriage to Arlene Algrim on October 18, 1959 in Hutchinson. She preceded him in death on August 25, 2019. Together they cared for their daughter, Carol, in their home until 2005, when she moved to an Interfaith Housing group home.

Harold is survived by his daughters, Beth Jones of Hutchinson, Ellen (Lyndon) Dick of Munich, North Dakota, and Carol Thiessen of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Rosalie (Leland) Flickinger of Hesston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters, Evelyn Ens and Lovella Thiessen.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 29, 2024 at Zoar Cemetery with memorial services to follow at 11 a.m., at Zoar Mennonite Brethren Church, Inman. Vera Jean Shaw, 87, of McPherson, KS and formerly of Valley Center, KS, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at The Cedars, McPherson.

Jean was born on November 2, 1936, in McPherson, KS, the daughter of Herman B. and Adella V. Goering.&nbsp; She graduated from McPherson High School.&nbsp; Jean married Leslie E. Johnson and later was united in marriage to Granville Elmo “G.E.” Shaw on September 8, 1967.&nbsp; They were married for 50 years prior to his passing on November 15, 2017.&nbsp;

She was a civilian employee of the United States Army and retired from Bombardier where she was a secretary.&nbsp; Jean was a member of Pleasant Valley Church in Sedgwick.

Survivors include: eight sons, Ronald Shaw (Ann) of Tennessee, Jimmy “Darrell” Shaw (Rhonda) of Tennessee, Robert Shaw of Tennessee, David Shaw of Tennessee, Dennis Shaw (Nanci) of McPherson, KS, Douglas Shaw (Penny) of Florida, Donald Shaw (Phyllis) of Wichita, KS, and Michael Shaw (Anne) of Fort Leavenworth, KS; &nbsp;brothers, J.B. Goering (Brenda) of Rome, GA, Jake Goering (Sharyl) of Overland Park, KS, and Lowell Goering of Hutchinson, KS; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Gordon Goering, niece, Tana Goering Morse, and nephew, Benjamin Goering.

On Saturday, July 20th, 2024, Kristin (Adams) Kliewer, loving wife and mother of four, passed away at the age of 54, following a brief but valiant fight with Stage IV cancer, surrounded by her family at home.

An avid reader and talented musician, Kristin was a born teacher, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education/Elementary Music from Tabor College. Kristin was well known and loved in the music community in the mid-Kansas area, and taught over 700 students during her career. Kristin was active in her church over the years and had many beloved friendships. She was best known for her quick-witted humor, her kind spirit, love for her family and community, and contributions to the arts.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dennis Adams, her grandparents, Johnny and Marguerite Fink, and her father-in-law, Jonah Kliewer.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, David Kliewer, her daughters, Valerie Snyder (Nathan), Paige Kliewer-McClellan, Elise Czarnowsky (Christian), and Emma Kliewer, her mother and step-father, Virginia and Kermit Iserhardt, her brother Jonathan Adams (Dawny), step-siblings Beth Lord and Chris Iserhardt, her mother-in-law Elinor Kliewer, and her grandchildren, Rain and Ember Czarnowsky.

Shana was born on May 5, 1980, in Cañon City, CO, the loving daughter of Michael Eugene and Tracy Ellen (Parsell) Miller. She graduated from Sterling High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society.&nbsp; She continued her education and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Resources at DeVry Institute.&nbsp; On August 30, 2017, Shana was united in marriage to Gerald Eusevio Garcia in Lindsborg, KS.

She worked at Pfizer in McPherson for 20 plus years, most recently as a Quality Manager.

Shana was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion Riders.

Glenn Wayne Stutzman, 79, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at his home in Hutchinson, KS. Glenn was born on August 9, 1944, in Hutchinson, KS, the son of Tobias and Emma (Nisly) Stutzman.

On November 20, 1965, Glenn married Miriam Kinsinger in Middlefield, OH. He started working for Stutzman Refuse when he was only 15 years old. He retired after 50 years. Glenn didn’t know a stranger and was always seen with a smile. He was a good PR manager for Stutzman’s and went above and beyond for his customers. Glenn was an avid collector of John Deere Toys and novelty radios. Glenn and Miriam had a small hobby farm where they raised several animals. He enjoyed gardening and planting trees. He was a member of Inspire Church in Hutchinson, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Perry L. Stutzman; sisters, Mary Yoder and Edith Stutzman; and son-in-law, Craig Wood.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Miriam; daughters, Janet McMillan, Norma (Robert) Cape and Penny Wood all of Hutchinson; brother, Ervin Stutzman of Virginia; sister, Erma Yoder of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Mitchell (Merit) Wood, Heather Cape, Natalie Wood, and Mason Wood; great grandchildren, Grace and Townes Wood, Eleanor and Iris Sullivan and several bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Glenn was born on August 9, 1944, in Hutchinson, KS, the son of Tobias and Emma (Nisly) Stutzman.On November 20, 1965, Glenn married Miriam Kinsinger in Middlefield, OH. He started working for Stutzman Refuse when he was only 15 years old. He retired after 50 years. Glenn didn’t know a stranger and was always seen with a smile. He was a good PR manager for Stutzman’s and went above and beyond for his customers. Glenn was an avid collector of John Deere Toys and novelty radios. Glenn and Miriam had a small hobby farm where they raised several animals. He enjoyed gardening and planting trees. He was a member of Inspire Church in Hutchinson, KS.He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Perry L. Stephanie Diane Stewart, 50, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024, in Hutchinson. She was born April 24, 1974, in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of Leo Dean Willoughby and Patricia Kay Elliott.

Stephanie had attended Shallow Water Elementary School, Shallow Water, KS and was a 1992 graduate of Scott Community High School, Scott City, Kansas. On July 11, 1992 she married John Stewart. They later divorced.

Following high school, she had worked as a CNA at Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City and St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, KS, was an EMT in Scott City, worked for Ford County Dispatch, Dodge City, and then Collins Bus, South Hutchinson.

In many of her roles she saw the devastation that life could bring, but through her talents in photography, painting and sketching, she was able to capture the beauty of life. She will be remembered for her creativity, the laughs that she brought to a room, and the kindness she showed during people’s most vulnerable moments.

She is survived by her mother, Pat Sheley, Hutchinson; sister, Wendy and husband John Neill, Buhler; sister Carrie and husband Angelo Head, Englewood, CO; three nephews, Bradley and Jeffrey Neill, both of Buhler, and Asher Head, Englewood, CO; a niece Chaya Head, Englewood, CO; step-mother, Mary Willoughby, Knoxville, IA; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Stephanie was preceded in death by her father, Leo D. Willoughby; stepfather, Gus Sheley; grandparents, Betty and Leo K. Wiloughby, Carl and Helen Elliott, and Virginia Elliott; and a nephew, Damien France.

Cremation is planned. Celebration of life services will take place 11 AM Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Inspire Church, Hutchinson. Jerry was a bartender at Sam's Town in Las Vegas, NV before moving to Colwich, KS to retire in 2002. &nbsp;Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandparent, and great grandparent. &nbsp;He woke up every morning and said he was grateful for this day. &nbsp;He will be remembered for his sense of humor and love of life.

Jerry is survived by his wife Linda; children Kerry (Chris) Gage, Kelly Norris, and Kimberly (Steve) Lietz; step-daughters Robin (Chrys) Phillips and Ranee (Todd) Charles; grandchildren Kristen Campbell, Kera Brown, Kaleb Gage, Nathan Gage, Michele Gage, Richard Humphrey, Zachary Humphrey, Sade Humphrey, Jordan Lietz, and Justin Lietz; step-granchildren Joshua Phillips, Elliott Van Dreumel, and Christian Charles; and 11 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

We gather here to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Richard Kyle, known to his students as “Doc”, known to others as “Dad”, “Dick”, and “Grandpa”. His journey was marked by an unwavering commitment to faith, scholarship, and service. Richard's life story is one of profound intellect, deep spirituality, and enduring dedication to his family, students, and community.

Among many things, Richard was a talented athlete. His prowess on the football field earned him awards and recognition, including induction into his high school and college athletic halls of fame. He received four NFL free agency contracts before signing with the Baltimore Colts. Football was not just a sport for him; it instilled in him the discipline and work ethic that drove his extraordinary academic career.

Though football was perhaps the only thing sending him to college. He was the son of a Pennsylvania steel worker who dropped out of school in eighth grade. His mother graduated from a small school that only went to tenth grade. They never encouraged him to get educated. His high school guidance counselor advised him to shave and join the army. Fortunately, he did neither.

Instead, Richard went on to achieve remarkable academic success, completing five degrees, including a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico and a Th.M from Princeton. He authored twelve books and over 160 articles and review pieces. His expertise in religious history, particularly on the Reformation and American religion, positioned him as a respected scholar and influential voice in his field. His work on figures like John Knox and his extensive research on American religious movements left an indelible mark on the academic community.

Richard's professional career was largely spent at Tabor College, where he served as a Professor of History and Religion for 41 years. His dedication to research was matched by his passion for teaching, both of which inspired his colleagues and students. Tabor College now has a lectureship named in his honor, aiming to encourage and recognize scholarship among Tabor faculty.

Richard’s worldview was deeply influenced by his exposure to other cultures. He traveled to 70 countries, and he taught abroad twice as a Fulbright scholar—once in Ukraine and once in Belarus. He directed 31 class trips for Tabor, bringing over 700 students to 30 different countries. He inspired his students and family to think globally, just as he did.

Richard's personal life was marked by a deep love and commitment to his family. He was a devoted husband to Joyce, his wife of 56 years, whose support and encouragement were vital to his achievements. Together, they raised two sons, Bryan and Brent, instilling in them the values of faith and education. The tragic loss of Bryan to leukemia was a profound test to his faith, but his faith persevered.

Richard was a man who lived his faith through action, whether it was teaching, coaching, or engaging with his community. Baptized in his youth, he later became an ordained minister, who was eventually drawn into the Mennonite Church because of its social concern for the less fortunate. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years, teaching adult Sunday school whenever called upon. He regarded his academic research and teaching at Tabor as a form of ministry. His work on fringe religions opened our eyes to many religious groups outside our own faith tradition. And he challenged problematic trends within the Christian church, arguing in two books that popular Evangelicalism has blurred the line between Christianity and American culture. Despite embracing the historic truths of Scripture, Richard developed and enriched his own theological perspective as a testament to his intellectual rigor and willingness to engage deeply with his own beliefs.

As we remember Richard, let us celebrate a full life well-lived—a life that exemplified a harmonious blend of faith and intellect, and dedication to family, students, and community. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the profound impact one individual can make.

Rosemary “Rosie” Sandoval, 85, died July 21, 2024, in Baker, FL. She was born June 13, 1939, in Hutchinson, to John “Johnny” and Helen (Cordova) Garcia.&nbsp;

Rosie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1957, and Salt City Business College. She worked as legal secretary for Branine-Chalfant and Hill. Rosie was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. She enjoyed shopping with friends, going to casinos, watching Hallmark Christmas movies and spending time with her family.

On January 20, 1962, she married Arturo Sandoval Jr. They shared over 55 years of marriage, prior to his death on March 12, 2017.

Rosie is survived by: sons, Rick (Charolette) Sandoval of Baker, FL, David (Michelle) Sandoval of Hutchinson, Mark (Val) Sandoval of Wichita; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Carol (John) Perez, John (Mary) Garcia, Christina Walenhaupt and Betty Iverson, all of Hutchinson, and Daryl Bentson of Omaha, NE.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; grandsons, Rion Sandoval and Isaac Sandoval.

Robert Wesley “Bob” Smith, 77, of Hutchinson, died July 21, 2024, at Hospice House. He was born August 19, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Oliver A. and Ocie Z. (Latham) Smith.

Bob graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army and Kansas Army National Guard from 1965-1972. Bob worked in the shipping department at Doskocil/Tyson Foods for over 38 years until he retired. He was a family man first and loved spending time with his grandchildren, and grand-dogs. Bob also loved to fish and travel, taking many mini-vacations with his family over the years. He also loved auto racing and helped work on cars and traveled with the team to various tracks in the area for over 30 years. Bob was a God-fearing man and member of New Life Church of the Nazarene.

On January 20, 1967, he married Connie Jo Conrad, in Hutchinson. They shared over 57 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: his son, Jeffrey Smith (Christi); grandson, Jerry Smith (Lexi); great-grandchildren, Zayla, Khortni, Wyatt, all of Hutchinson; siblings, Frank Smith (Brenda) of Tyler, TX, Karl Smith of Hutchinson, Georgia Walden of Winfield, Rick Smith (Arlene) of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Karen Smith of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John; nephews, Kenny Poulton and Wayne Walden.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson. Military honors will be conducted by Kansas National Guard Honor Team.

Robert Wesley “Bob” Smith |1946-2024|

Leona Goering, 84, of Moundridge, Kansas passed away Saturday, July 20th, 2024 at Pine Village. She was born October 22, 1939 in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of Henry R. Neufeld and Anna (Hiebert) Neufeld.

Leona was a life-long member of Eden Mennonite Church, and was a homemaker and rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.

She was united in marriage to Leland R. Goering on November 1, 1957, in Moundridge, in a double-ring ceremony with her older sister Edith (Neufeld) Flickinger and husband Floyd. Leland and Leona celebrated 63 years together until his passing in 2021.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Leland R. Goering; parents, Henry and Anna Neufeld; brothers, Rudolph Neufeld, Alvin Neufeld, and Menno Neufeld; sisters, Clara (Alfred) Voth, Viola (Harold) Trost, and Edith (Floyd) Flickinger.

Leona is survived by her son, Richard Goering, and wife Amy, Moundridge; and granddaughters DeAnna Goering, Pittsburg, KS, and Kimberly Goering, Albuquerque, NM.

Leona Goering |1939-2024|

My husband and our father, Larry Lynn Smith, was born September 29, 1943, in Wichita, Kansas. Within several months he was welcomed into the home of Lloyd and Amanda (Johnson) Smith. He peacefully departed this life surrounded by his family on July 20, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, after a short health battle at the age of eighty years.

Larry's early childhood days were spent at Halstead, Kansas. In 1954, the family moved to a farm near Burns, Kansas. His lower grade school years were at Enterprise School in Burrton, Kansas. The later school years were at a local school in DeGraff, Kansas.

In his teen years, Larry answered God's call and was baptized in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on January 18, 1959, by Minister Alvin Koehn. Life was real and had it's challenges, but Dad always enjoyed the fellowship of the church and brotherhood. By God's grace, he left us with an assurance of his salvation and asked us to meet him in Heaven. We thank God for granting our prayers for his peacefulcrossing of the Jordan River.

Larry found his life's companion in me, Linda Irene Wedel, daughter of Alvin and Amanda Wedel. We were married October 28, 1962, and shared life's joys and challenges for sixty-one years. Starting life together, we lived in a small house on the yard of his parents. After a move to Moundridge, Kansas, our first child, Nolan Larry, joined us. In a few years, we moved back to the Burns area. A daughter, Janet Christine, and another son, Mark Lloyd, were born to us and completed our family.

Dad had several occupations in his life. Farming was always interesting to him, and he enjoyed watching the crops grow. He liked welding and shop work. His modifications to many items made them more convenient and useful; these are memories we will continue to find as we move on with life. Driving truck for several different businesses opened a new avenue of cultivating friendships. Working the night shift as a maintenance man at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital was a job he found great satisfaction in for sixteen years. He loved people and never tired of story telling! We remember Dad as a man who liked to tinker in his workshop, fixing things for the joy of seeing them work again. Going to garage sales was something he enjoyed, and we have and use items we have received from him. Animals were always present in Dad's life, and it didn't matter what kind - horses, dogs, cats, birds and other animals were looked after with tender loving care. Dad loved the grandchildren and delighted in making them happy. They all remember the little treasures Grandpa gave them.

Larry us survived by his wife, Linda, of Burns, Kansas; Nolan Smith and wife, Jana of Burns, Kansas; Janet and husband Marlin Nickel of Sunray, Texas; and Mark (Bob) Smith and wife, Holly of Texline, Texas. Thirteen treasured grandchildren and three treasured great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, on brother, Kenneth, and two infant granddaughters.

John B. Shaw, 99, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at his home in rural McPherson.&nbsp; He owned and operated Shaw Tree Service.

John was born December 27, 1924, in Mills, NE, the son of Orville Leroy and Ruby Ann (Rose) Shaw.&nbsp; He graduated from Central College.&nbsp; On June 2, 1949, John was united in marriage to Eunice Lucille Adams in Colorado Springs, CO.&nbsp; This union was blessed with six children, Robert, Timothy, LaVonda, Karolyn, Rick, and Lisa.

He was a longtime member of the McPherson Free Methodist Church.&nbsp; John served in the United States Army during World War II in the Japanese Occupation Forces.&nbsp;

Survivors include six children, Robert (Rosemarie) Shaw of Eugene, OR, Timothy (Judy) Shaw of McPherson, KS, LaVonda (Mike) Hinrichsen of Colorado Springs, CO, Karolyn (Jeff) Johnson of McPherson, KS, Rick (Julie) Shaw of Waco, TX, and Lisa (Matt) Hampton of Goddard, KS; sister-in-law, Evelyn Shaw of Greenville, IL; 30 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings, Marian Gowan, James Shaw, Paul Shaw, Ruth Kenyon, and Richard Shaw.

Laura G. Hash, 89, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024, in Hutchinson, KS. Laura was born on September 9, 1934, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Dale and Bernice (Hines) McCoy.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School, Class of 1952. She also graduated from Hutchinson Junior College and Wichita Tech School. On August 30, 1953, Laura married Harold Hash in Roswell, NM. He died on February 4, 2011.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold, and brother, Gary McCoy.

Ashley R. Hauschild |1987-2024|

Paul Wilson Dillon, 97, passed away at home in the early afternoon of July 18, 2024, surrounded by the boundless love of family and caregivers. Earlier that morning, he picked with assistance a bouquet of brightly-colored zinnias to give family later in the day—flowers he and his recently deceased wife Ruth grew and joyfully gifted for years. Kindnesses such as this, enabled by a bountiful home, a knack for growth, and an attentive nature, characterize Paul’s life.&nbsp;

Born on August 4, 1926 to parents Clyde and Flora (Jones) Dillon, Paul lived in Hutchinson, Kansas for all but five years of his life. Service in the Navy during WWII and a college degree in 1950 from the University of Kansas where he was a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity leader comprised his years away. After meeting Ruth (Muirhead) on a blind date arranged by a childhood friend, Paul fell in love quickly and married Ruth at First Methodist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 19, 1949. The two shared a long and fortunate life filled with respect, good humor, world-wide adventure, family traditions, and the best of friends.&nbsp;

Paul lived in five Hutchinson homes, the first on the corner of 15th and Main, near his grandmother’s and a block from Dillons grocery store #8, and the last two in a neighborhood selected to reside near family and friends. Paul and Ruth cherished their last home, on Kisiwa Parkway, for 53 years.&nbsp;

In younger years, Paul ran track, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and enjoyed family rock-hunting and camping trips. He assisted his father and Uncle Ray, along with cousins Ace and Dick, in nearly every aspect of Dillons grocery stores. When Paul was 15, his father died tragically, and invaluable support came, as it did throughout his life, from his mother, sister Betsy, Uncle Ray and Aunt Stella, cousins Ace and Dick, Hutchinson’s First Presbyterian Church, the extended Dillons community, and Boy Scout Troop #1 (Troop #301).&nbsp;

Family business roots—a successful Hutchinson-area brickmaking business led by his maternal grandmother Lura Chase Jones and the Dillons grocery store business on his father’s side of the family—shaped Paul’s work ethic and dedication. As with his entire life, Paul’s career as Dillons Secretary-Treasurer exhibited fairness, foresight, ingenuity, and good will. For Paul, being on time meant arriving at least five minutes early, and he was always early. He impressively balanced work, family, fun, and friendship, and when faced with life’s challenges responded with curiosity and commitment.&nbsp;

Throughout his life, Paul kept close relationships, including ones with friends he’d run track and scouted with in his youth. He eagerly picked up family and friends for golf, tennis, lunch, dinner, or celebrations at Prairie Dunes Country Club and other local venues. &nbsp;A Scoutmaster for decades in Hutchinson Troop #1, Paul received regional and national awards and positively influenced hundreds of Scouts for whom Paul’s expression, “Good night, Scouts,” lives on with highest regard.&nbsp;

Strong believers in service to community, Paul and Ruth were among the founders of the Hutchinson Community Foundation, where Paul served as an investment advisor for over 25 years. He volunteered whenever he could, most recently at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center assisting with computers.&nbsp;

Paul relished picnicking and skiing in Aspen and teaching his children and grandchildren to ski. He was always the last one off the mountain even with a broken shoulder and put away his skis in his mid-80s without announcing his last run down the mountain. Other favorite activities included swapping stories, traveling, gardening, birdwatching, especially for orioles, fishing, curating fish tanks, any family event, giving grandkids tractor rides, and hobbies that created items he could give away.&nbsp;

To thousands he gifted “Paul’s Pickles,” over 300 hooked rugs, and more than 10,000 reindeer made of wood and catalpa leaves from the family farm outside Hutchinson. Paul grinned quickly, paid bills as early as possible, prized making “Dad and Grandpa eggs,” preferred plaid flannel shirts, khaki pants, and white socks (much to Ruth’s dismay), craved homemade grape ice cream, favored huskies, and loved teasing Ruth. When you shared time with Paul Dillon, he and you felt special.

An unflappable and admirable team, Paul and Ruth lovingly raised three remarkable children: David Dillon, Ann Ramseyer, and Mary Dillon. Paul remains a beloved father, grandfather to nine, and great-grandfather to 17 (and one on the way).  </figure>Paul Wilson Dillon, 97, passed away at home in the early afternoon of July 18, 2024, surrounded by the boundless love of family and caregivers. Earlier that morning, he picked with assistance a bouquet of brightly-colored zinnias to give family later in the day—flowers he and his recently deceased wife Ruth grew and joyfully gifted for years. Kindnesses such as this, enabled by a bountiful home, a knack for growth, and an attentive nature, characterize Paul’s life.&nbsp;Born on August 4, 1926 to parents Clyde and Flora (Jones) Dillon, Paul lived in Hutchinson, Kansas for all but five years of his life. Service in the Navy during WWII and a college degree in 1950 from the University of Kansas where he was a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity leader comprised his years away. After meeting Ruth (Muirhead) on a blind date arranged by a childhood friend, Paul fell in love quickly and married Ruth at First Methodist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 19, 1949. The two shared a long and fortunate life filled with respect, good humor, world-wide adventure, family traditions, and the best of friends.&nbsp;Paul lived in five Hutchinson homes, the first on the corner of 15th and Main, near his grandmother’s and a block from Dillons grocery store #8, and the last two in a neighborhood selected to reside near family and friends. Paul and Ruth cherished their last home, on Kisiwa Parkway, for 53 years.&nbsp;In younger years, Paul ran track, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and enjoyed family rock-hunting and camping trips. He assisted his father and Uncle Ray, along with cousins Ace and Dick, in nearly every aspect of Dillons grocery stores. When Paul was 15, his father died tragically, and invaluable support came, as it did throughout his life, from his mother, sister Betsy, Uncle Ray and Aunt Stella, cousins Ace and Dick, Hutchinson’s First Presbyterian Church, the extended Dillons community, and Boy Scout Troop #1 (Troop #301).&nbsp;Family business roots—a successful Hutchinson-area brickmaking business led by his maternal grandmother Lura Chase Jones and the Dillons grocery store business on his father’s side of the family—shaped Paul’s work ethic and dedication. As with his entire life, Paul’s career as Dillons Secretary-Treasurer exhibited fairness, foresight, ingenuity, and good will. For Paul, being on time meant arriving at least five minutes early, and he was always early. He impressively balanced work, family, fun, and friendship, and when faced with life’s challenges responded with curiosity and commitment.&nbsp;Throughout his life, Paul kept close relationships, including ones with friends he’d run track and scouted with in his youth. He eagerly picked up family and friends for golf, tennis, lunch, dinner, or celebrations at Prairie Dunes Country Club and other local venues. &nbsp;A Scoutmaster for decades in Hutchinson Troop #1, Paul received regional and national awards and positively influenced hundreds of Scouts for whom Paul’s expression, “Good night, Scouts,” lives on with highest regard.&nbsp;Strong believers in service to community, Paul and Ruth were among the founders of the Hutchinson Community Foundation, where Paul served as an investment advisor for over 25 years. He volunteered whenever he could, most recently at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center assisting with computers.&nbsp;Paul relished picnicking and skiing in Aspen and teaching his children and grandchildren to ski. He was always the last one off the mountain even with a broken shoulder and put away his skis in his mid-80s without announcing his last run down the mountain. Other favorite activities included swapping stories, traveling, gardening, birdwatching, especially for orioles, fishing, curating fish tanks, any family event, giving grandkids tractor rides, and hobbies that created items he could give away.&nbsp;To thousands he gifted “Paul’s Pickles,” over 300 hooked rugs, and more than 10,000 reindeer made of wood and catalpa leaves from the family farm outside Hutchinson. Paul grinned quickly, paid bills as early as possible, prized making “Dad and Grandpa eggs,” preferred plaid flannel shirts, khaki pants, and white socks (much to Ruth’s dismay), craved homemade grape ice cream, favored huskies, and loved teasing Ruth. When you shared time with Paul Dillon, he and you felt special.An unflappable and admirable team, Paul and Ruth lovingly raised three remarkable children: David Dillon, Ann Ramseyer, and Mary Dillon. Paul remains a beloved father, grandfather to nine, and great-grandfather to 17 (and one on the way). Kyle Lee Thompson, 48, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024, surrounded by family and friends at McPherson Hospital.

Kyle was born on August 6, 1975, in Arkansas City, KS, the cherished son of Carl Lee and Karla Kay (Bose) Thompson. He attended Roosevelt Elementary School, McPherson Middle School, and graduated from McPherson High School in 1994. Kyle’s career included working at Viega Manufacturing and being a line supervisor for Watts Water Works in Kansas City.

He was a member of the McPherson V.F.W. Auxiliary and embraced a variety of passions throughout his life. He was an avid enthusiast of heavy metal music, particularly enjoying bands like Alice In Chains and Metallica. Kyle found joy in playing guitar, gaming, motocross racing, and paintballing. He enjoyed watching Hannity on the Fox News Channel with his father. Kyle also delighted in attending Renaissance festivals and counted "Pirates of the Caribbean" among his favorite films. He was known for his love of SpongeBob SquarePants, G.I. Joe action figurines, Pee-wee Herman, NASCAR #24, and Doberman Pinschers.&nbsp; Kyle was kind and compassionate with a dry sense of humor.&nbsp; He was a loving uncle to Avery and Cadence.

Survivors include his mother, Karla Thompson of McPherson, KS; brother, Chad Thompson of McPherson, KS; nieces, Avery and Cadence Thompson; and numerous extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Thompson (just 12 days prior on July 7, 2024), and his beloved Doberman Pinschers, Zoey and Sarge.

A celebration of Kyle's life will be held jointly with his father's on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the McPherson V.F.W. Post #2715, 120 S. Taft St., McPherson, KS.

Helen Marie (McPherson) Hickel, 89, died July 17, 2024. 

Born March 9, 1935, to Walter Ray McPherson and Edith (Davis) McPherson in Perry/Noble County, Oklahoma. The family moved to Kansas in 1940. She later graduated from Chase High School in 1952 and attended Fort Hays State where she met Joseph Hickel. They married December 29, 1954, and celebrated 57 years before his death June 20, 2011. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Altar Society of Ellinwood. She was a member of Grove Park Golf Club and several bridge clubs. She cheered on her beloved KC Royals, KU Jayhawks, and KSU Wildcats sports teams.  For many years, she served as organist for the Saturday evening mass at St. Joseph’s Church. She oversaw Ellinwood youth bowling for several years and was an avid bowler herself. She coached summer high school fast pitch softball, even taking one team to State. Helen was employed as bookkeeper for several local small businesses and in area banks before retiring. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Norma Chambers, infant brother Charles Ray, and a great grandson Rowan Joseph-Kai Toles. Survivors are daughters Diana (Paul) Zecha, Hoisington, and Pamela (Rich) Koester, Hoisington. Sons are Greg Hickel, Ellinwood, Scott (Deb) Hickel, Denver, CO, and Kevin (Angie) Hickel, Manhattan. Grandchildren: Bethany Ramsey, Kyle and Steven Zecha, Lacey, Brianne, Jacquelyn, and Rylie Koester, MacKenzie Koester-Smith, Elisha Toles, Josh Hickel, Caden and Greyson Hickel; and ten great grandchildren.

Born July 29, 1934, in Leoti, Wichita County, Kansas, Marlene was the fifth child of Ernest and Martha Lungwitz. She graduated from Wichita East High School in 1952 and attended Hutchinson Community College where she met the love of her life, William Henry Ernsting, in the fall of 1952. It was love at first sight and they were married June 27, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita. The couple lived in Ogden, Kansas, while William served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Riley, and then moved to Hays, Kansas. The couple lived in Honduras in 1957-58 before locating to Ellinwood, Kansas, where she resided for the next 66 years.

Marlene and William operated the Ernsting family farm south of Ellinwood for 15 years before establishing Ernsting Radiator Service (Ernsting’s Inc.) in 1972. They were a team in the business that provided dozens of local youth their first jobs, and the company remains a steady employer to the current day. She was dedicated to service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in a variety of leadership roles and remained active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for more than 50 years. Marlene was an initial and long-time board member for the international Lutheran mission agency Lead a Child. She was elected to two consecutive terms (1989-1997) on the Barton Community College Board of Trustees.

She served on the board and volunteered at the Barton County Historical Society for more than 20 years.

She loved to travel, was a voracious reader, an avid bridge player, believed red wine far superior to white, and followed every pitch, pass, and shot of the Royals, Chiefs, Shockers, Wildcats, Jayhawks, and Cougars. In the spring she gardened, which meant she pulled weeds, planted flowers, and then pulled more weeds. She famously entertained family and friends at her pool and patio in the summers to the sounds of splashing, laughing, and the slam of the back door as she entered the house for more beverages, snacks, or one more towel. In more recent days, she waged a long war with her cell phone.

Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, William Ernsting (2010), and son Matthew Ernsting (2019); and siblings LeRoy Lungwitz and Kenneth Lungwitz. She is survived by her sons Guy Ernsting of Ellinwood, Kansas, and Andrew Ernsting and his wife, Kristi, of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Levi Ernsting, Rebeka Watson, Jena Lynn, Drew Ernsting, and Jake Ernsting, four great grandchildren; and siblings Lillian Frey, Lorna Hohman, and Leon Lungwitz.

Funeral service will take place 10:30 AM, Wed., July 24 at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood, KS. She made a profession of faith and was baptized in the Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church at the age of 12. She was a member of the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church. She married Abe L. Friesen on July 5, 1966 in Wichita, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 3, 2008. Welcoming her to Heaven are: husband Abe, her parents, brothers Archie, Norman, Wallace, sister Maxine and brother-in-law LaVerne Funk, nephew Richard Funk, daughter- in-law Norma Friesen, son-in-law, Dean Graber, and granddaughter-in-law Bonnie Friesen.

Tracey was born in Manhattan, KS on August 7, 1960, the daughter of Bobby Lee and Sandra Sue (West) Gibson.

Tracey enjoyed her walks with Larry, relaxing on the patio with her family and visiting with close friends.Tracey was united in marriage to Larry Aitken on June 12, 1982 in McPherson, KS. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson. They were blessed with the birth of two children, Sarah and Luke.She is survived by her husband, Larry; father, Bobby Gibson of Moundridge, KS; children, Sarah Henry of Canton, KS and Luke Aitken of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren, Silas (Dylan) Stewart, Asa Courtney, Wyatt, Levi and Jovey Henry; brothers, Rob (Lori) Gibson of Statesboro, GA and Brian (Jill) Gibson of Owasso, OK.Tracey was preceded in death by her mother, Sandra Gibson and son-in-law, Barry Henry.Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at Glidden-Ediger -Wiggins Funeral Home in McPherson.Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Canton, KS with Troy Slater officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
