Martha “Jean” (Hearn) Hurt, 94, of Haven, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the Cheney Golden Age Home. She was born on December 2, 1929 in Sawyer, Kansas, to Arthur and Mary (Kennedy) Hearn.

Jean was united in marriage to Billie Venters. He preceded her in death in 1966. She later married Pete Hurt in 1967. He passed away in 2007.

She was a devoted homemaker and worked as a cook at the nursing home in Haven. She also volunteered at the Et Cetera Shop in Yoder.

Jean was a member of the Hutchinson Friends Church, and previously attended the Haven United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her children, Billie (Sheri) Venters, Marsha Wells (Pancho Smith), and Jerri (Steve) Taylor, all of Haven, and Janet Jones of Medicine Lodge; 20 grandchildren; 77 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Hearn of Sawyer; and sister, Mary K. Hearn of Sawyer.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Billie Venters; second husband, Pete Hurt; four children Mike Venters, Mary Scobee, Bobbie Loehr, and Barry Venters; grandson, John Loehr; and four siblings.

Cremation is planned. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Ott Funeral Home, Haven, with family greeting friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Haven Senior Center in care of Ott Funeral Home, PO Box 217, Haven, KS 67543.

April L. Searfoss, 70, of Hutchinson, died August 24, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born April 5, 1954, in Orange, California, to Richard and Vivian (Etheridge) Searfoss.&nbsp;

April graduated in 1972 from Bolsa Grande High School, then spent four years in the United States Air Force. She worked as a legal secretary for the Reno County District Attorney’s office, where she loved to “put the bad guys away.” April had a fondness for Disney movies and wanted to visit Tokyo Disney. &nbsp;Like a true Disney fanatic, she was a friend to all animals and cared for dogs, cats, and birds. When April was not helping to catch bad guys, she spent her time water coloring and diamond painting.

She is survived by: her daughter, Vivian Searfoss of Goddard; brothers, Richard Searfoss of Goddard, and Jon Searfoss of Hutchinson.

April was preceded in death by her parents.&nbsp;

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned.&nbsp;

Michael J. "Mike" McGuire, 81, passed away Friday, August 23, 2024 at Hilltop Manor in Cunningham. He was born on March 11, 1943 in Nashville to Michael Donald and Vivian Marie McGuire. Michael married Judith Kay "Judy" (Strong) McGuire on August 24, 1968 in Isabel. She preceded him in death on October 4, 2013.

Mike graduated from Nashville High School. He attended Sterling College on a basketball scholarship. Mike enlisted and served four years in the United States Air Force. He attended Pratt Junior College and then went back to Sterling College where he played football and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He taught high school social studies and physical education at Montezuma and Attica and coached football, basketball and track. He also coached basketball at Sharon. He went on to pump oil wells for Pete's Pumpers and then became a farmer. He was a member of the Co-op Coffee Crew. He enjoyed watching sporting events, fishing, playing slow pitch softball, running cattle and farming, and following his grandchildren on their endeavors.

He is survived by his children, Lance (Amy) McGuire of Cunningham, Clint (Angie) McGuire of Claflin, Wade (Heidi) McGuire of Hays and Kristal (Oliver) Sparks of Paola; sister, Jill (Bill) Watkins of Kingman; and grandchildren, Alayna, Luke, Ellie, Liam, Carly and Jalynn McGuire, Cali (Tyler) Cronister, Hunter, Madison and Reese McGuire, Austin, Alex and Ian McGuire, Brady, Leah, Faith and Mason Sparks.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; sister, Marcia Koeppen; and brother, Criss McGuire.

Nina Rose Garber, 87, of Hutchinson, died August 16, 2024, at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;She was born June 17, 1937, in Hutchinson to Samuel L. &nbsp;and Edna Nina (Stewart) Stoughton.

Nina graduated from Buhler High School in 1955. &nbsp;She married William “Bill” Garber in October 22, 1955. &nbsp;They were married for 67 years before his passing June 1, 2023. &nbsp;They had two children: Nina and William.

Nina Rose loved her family and any family get-togethers. &nbsp;She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, watching Sci-Fi scary movies and the Twilight Zone as well as reading Stephen King books. She worked at Osco Drug for 30 years where she did a variety of duties. &nbsp;She always like working with the public

Nina is survived by: daughter, Nina Jarmer of Hutchinson; son, William “Bill” (Kelly) Garber of Manhattan; 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; and 3 brothers- Sam Jr., Bill and Charles.

Donna M. (Baier) Garten, 98, of Medicine Lodge, KS, died Thursday, August 22, 2024 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 20, 1926, the daughter of George Baier and Ella (Crick) Baier. On May 2, 1948, she married Robert D. “Bob” Garten in Medicine Lodge, KS. He preceded her in death on December 6, 2006.

Donna grew up in Barber County graduating from Medicine Lodge High School then attending college at Texas State College for Women before returning to Medicine Lodge.

Donna was the Clerk of the District Court in Medicine Lodge, KS. She was a member of the Medicine Lodge Methodist Church.

Surviving are one son, Steve (Bev) Garten of Medicine Lodge, KS; one daughter, Cathy (Clay) Axline of Medicine Lodge, KS; three grandchildren, Justin (Catherine) Garten, Matthew (Yuna) Garten, and Michael (Ericka) Axline; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Garten, Evan Garten, and Blake Axline; four step grandchildren, Michael (Tina) Brown, Julie (Jeramie) Dobbins, Josh (Taffy) Axline, and Greg (Amy) Axline; twelve step great-grandchildren; four step great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donna M. (Baier) Garten |1926-2024|

Daniel Thomas Hauck, 70, passed away November 19, 2023, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. He was born January 18, 1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Thomas Frank Hauck and Thelma Merleen (Leeper) Hauck.

Daniel was a proud member of the military, having served two terms in the United States Navy: from 1969 to 1973, on the U.S.S. Jouett, and from 1977 to 1981, on the U.S.S. Coral Sea. After being honorably discharged, he moved on to be a driver and mechanic for Chism’s Trash Service, in Great Bend, Kansas. Daniel was not just an employee, but a friendly face to all on his route, from passing out candy for the kids, handing out treats for the furry friends, and being followed around and recorded by teens that were interested in his work.

On February 14, 2000, he married the love of his life, Janice Lynn Goans. To their union, Janice brought along her daughter, Shawna, and Shawna’s daughter, Caitlin, whom he grew an unconditional, lifelong bond with. Janice later passed away on April 22, 2007. Daniel’s heart was shattered by this loss. While he left us much sooner than we would have wanted, Daniel was ready to be back together with Janice for eternity.

Survivors include his mother, Thelma M. Hembree of Hutchinson; children, Shawna Goans of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Kevin (spouse Tammi) Schreiner of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Caitlin Schmitt of Lincoln, Nebraska, Nola Schreiner of Austin, Texas, and Gibson Schreiner of Austin, Texas; siblings, Mike Cooper of Hutchinson, Kelly (spouse Milton) Clevenger of Colwich, and Amenda Lobstein of Hutchinson; goddaughter, Leanda Love Mooney, Leadville, Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Lynn Hauck; his stepfather, George ‘Tommy’ Hembree; brother, Robert Lee Hauck; and three infant sisters.

If you knew Daniel, you most likely knew him as Dan, Danny, Dan-Dan the Trash Man, or Caitlin’s Papa. He was a devoted family man, and lifelong friend to many. Daniel's passion for his work, his wife, and his family never failed to shine. He will be greatly missed and cherished.

Daniel Thomas Hauck |1953-2024|

Jeanette Hallman, 92, died August 20, 2024, at Legend Senior Living, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was one of nine children born to Clarence and Selma (Cook) Pohlman on August 19, 1932, in Ellinwood. &nbsp;

Jeanette grew up on a dairy farm in Barton County, graduating from Ellinwood High School in 1950, and later, Adela Hale Business College, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She worked at People’s State Bank in Ellinwood before moving to Hutchinson, and was a homemaker. &nbsp;From her infectious laugh, positive spirit, and welcoming nature, Jeanette was an example of selfless unconditional love, compassion, and integrity. &nbsp;No matter how challenging the task, Jeanette was up to the challenge of gifting those around her with her servant’s heart and caregiving nature. &nbsp;Jeanette was a dedicated volunteer at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and her church, First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson. &nbsp; Above all, family came first. &nbsp;Jeanette was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandma, sister, and aunt.&nbsp;

On June 24, 1956, she married Victor “Vic” Hugo Hallman, in Ellinwood. &nbsp;He died November 14, 2000, after they shared 44 years of marriage.

Jeanette is survived by: &nbsp;son, Brian Hallman (Rhonda) of Flower Mound, TX; daughter, Terri McQueen (Mike) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Samantha Koenig (Matt), Brittany Hallman, Christian Hallman (Sarah), Max McQueen, and Lillie McQueen; great-grandsons, Camden and Noah Koenig, with great-grandson Hallman arriving in October; sisters, Betty Thomas of McPherson and Marlene Wornkey of St. John; brother, Darrell Pohlman of Lee’s Summit, MO; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Denise Hallman; sisters, Marilyn Martens, Velda Stokes, and Dorothy Bryant; and brothers, Donald Pohlman and Alfred Pohlman.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2024, at Trinity Cemetery, Hudson, KS. &nbsp;Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 201 E. Sherman, Hutchinson, both officiated by the Reverend Christine Kass. Kent Alan Rayl, 73, of Andover, Kansas passed away on August 9, 2024 at his home from complications related to Lewy Body Dementia.&nbsp;

Kent was born November 4, 1950 in Anthony, KS the child of Charlie and Bertha “Bert” (Dinges) Rayl and grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas with his beloved siblings Steve Rayl, Cheryl (Rayl) Bixby, Rod Rayl and countless aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Kent graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1968, where he played multiple sports and was a standout track &amp; field star. He then went on to earn his Physical Education degree from Kansas State University in 1973.&nbsp;

Kent married Leigh Ann (Holcomb) on March 10, 1973 at the First Congregational Church in Hutchinson, KS. Kent and Leigh celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2023 and were blessed to have two children Jaime (Rayl) Snider and Joshua Rayl who both made it well into adulthood despite their best efforts as teens. This allowed Kent to enjoy his role as “Papa” to his seven grandchildren who brought him endless hours of entertainment. &nbsp;

Kent worked as a salesman for many years at Hodisco, Fruit of the Loom, and for more than 30 years as a Key Account Executive at Wrangler Jeans until he retired. Kent loved traveling across his territory and worked with several accounts for decades creating lasting friendships with customers, sales clerks, and CEOs.

Kent’s spare time was generally spent on the golf course, attending OU football games, mowing his lawn like a baseball diamond, or calling his extended family and friends to get the most recent updates on their lives.

Kent was currently attending New Spring Church in Wichita, KS but previously attended University Christian Church in Norman, OK where he frequently played basketball and softball with the men’s group.&nbsp;

Kent never met a stranger. To him, they were just people that weren’t friends yet. He was prone to constant movement, whistling loudly to himself (or for his kids to come home), and telling extremely corny dad jokes at inappropriate times. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Remaining to cherish Kent’s memory are his wife of 51 years Leigh, his children Jaime (Travis) Snider &amp; Josh (Kari) Rayl; grandchildren, Leya Smith, Skyler Smith, Blake Snider, Wyatt Snider, Lucy Snider, JJ Rayl, and Waylon Rayl, Brothers Steve Rayl and Rod Rayl, Sister Cheryl (Dana) Bixby, sister-in-law Debbi (Greg Hall), brother-in-law John (Jill) Weidman, several nieces and nephews and too many cousins and friends to list.

Preceding Kent in death are his parents, Charlie &amp; Bert Rayl, in-laws Dean &amp; Joan Holcomb, and his sister-in-law Suzi (Holcomb) Weidman.

Kent Alan Rayl |1950-2024|

Although she didn’t get to try all the recipes she cut out, finish all her quilting projects or use all craft supplies she had saved, the Lord decided it was time for her to join her family members who were waiting for her. Marjorie Lucern Garten Blakeslee passed away on August 18, 2024 in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was the daughter of John Whitman and Esther Elizabeth (Gramberg) Garten and was born in Newton, Kansas, on January 28, 1926.

She attended school in Newton through her junior year and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Colorado Woman’s College, Denver, with an AA degree and completed her education with a BS in Secondary Education from the University of Kansas. As a student she was initiated into Zeta Sigma Pi, Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta and Pi Lambda Theta. Following her graduation she taught in Onaga, Kansas for two years and Great Bend, Kansas for two years.

Marjorie met Albert Donald “Don” Blakeslee while double dating with friends when they were both attending KU. &nbsp;They were married in Danforth Chapel on the University of Kansas campus on August 19, 1950 and the marriage lasted for 71 years. When Don returned from his military service, they moved to Rawlins, Wyoming where he resumed teaching at Rawlins High School. At that time the Rawlins School system did not employ married women teachers so she used her secretarial skills and worked for most of the practicing attorneys in Rawlins. Later she worked as secretary to the Director of Nurses at the local hospital for five years. She retired as an employee of the Carbon County ASCS Office in 1989 where she received awards for excellence for her work.

As a young girl she had many opportunities to travel extensively throughout the United States in part due to her father’s employment by the Santa Fe Railroad. During her marriage she and Don had opportunities to travel together to sixteen foreign countries.

Surviving her are her daughter Julia Drake (Steve); daughter-in-law Denise Blakeslee; five grandchildren, Peter Blakeslee, Cori Blakeslee, Whitney Rowley, Elizabeth Drake, and Emmalee Wright (Brian); and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. As a former member of France Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Rawlins she was ordained as an Elder and was elected and served as Clerk of Session for eighteen years. In addition, she served on the Presbytery Committee on Ministry, Personnel Committee and Council. She was elected to serve as Moderator of the Presbytery of Wyoming. She served two terms on the Colorado Woman’s College Alumnae Association Board and was appointed to the Carbon County Senior Services Board for several terms. Many times she served as secretary to these organizations.

She and her husband were a devoted couple who cherished all activities that brought them in contact with their family. In Rawlins she was one of the founding members of the Church craft group, Fun and Fancywork, that organized the Santa’s Closet Bazaar and for almost twenty years gave the community the opportunity to buy Christmas items for friends and family and to buy the wonderful foodstuffs members of the Church contributed. She was a member of AAUW, AARP and a fifty-year member of Eastern Star.

When the snow on the driveway got increasingly hard to move and traveling over miles of highway in the wintertime was becoming difficult, Marjorie and Don made the decision to move closer to family and settled in Hutchinson in 2007 where there were many opportunities to get involved in community and church activities. In her spare moments she loved to knit, craft, sew, quilt and go to garage sales.

After moving to Hutchinson she and Don joined the New Covenant Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and joined the Presbyterian Women’s organization. After Don’s passing, she joined the First Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Don, son Mark Blakeslee (Denise), granddaughter Cassie Blakeslee, and great-grandson Christopher Henderson.

Steven graduated from Pratt High School in 1966. He earned his Master's Degree from the University of Kansas. He served 13 years in the United States National Guard. He was a High School Special Education teacher at Hugoton and then worked as a Special Education Administrator for South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative in Pratt. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and formerly served on the Board at Arrowhead West for many years. He belonged to many Special Education Groups, sporting activities and administrative groups. He was active in Stephen's Ministry at First United Methodist Church as well as Emmaus and Chrysalis organizations. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, learning new technology, sports especially Kansas City Chiefs and KU Football and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Janell; daughters, Kristina Keeling and Bethany Mullins all of Pratt; brothers, Danny (Karla) Mead of Pratt and Tim (Robin) Mead of Van Lear, Kentucky; sister, Sharilyn Mead of Corpus Christi, Texas; and grandchildren, Gage Barbour, Corbin Keeling, Kyrian Keeling, Tegan Mullins, Logan Mullins and Riddick Mullins.

Steven is preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Rd, Pratt. &nbsp;Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 23, 2024 at First United Methodist Church, Pratt. Burial will follow at Ellenwood Cemetery, Sawyer.

John Wayne Davenport, 81, of Hutchinson, died August 17, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born January 24, 1943, in Alexandria, LA, to Oren W. and Nina M. (Price) Davenport, while Oren was serving in WWII.

John graduated from Nickerson High School in 1961 and received a degree in engineering from Wichita State University. He co-owned and operated Price Water Well Service for 25 years and later Gambino’s Pizza for 20 years. John was self-employed most of his life and showed his entrepreneurial spirit early by starting his own hay baling business while in high school. Besides great common sense, he was a gifted mathematician and helped his children and several of their friends make it through high school math classes. John loved spending time with family and friends at the lake and Table Rock Lake in Missouri was his favorite place to go. He also loved Jeeps, and he and his family made many life-long friendships through his membership in the Salt City Four Wheel Drive Club. John also loved cars, from the 1940 Chevy Coupe he drove to high school to the 1964 El Camino he drove to work at Gambino’s, he was happiest behind the wheel of a Hot Rod! John also had a kind heart and loved animals, regularly giving the last bite of his sandwich to whichever dog was sitting close to his chair. John was of the Methodist faith.

On October 11, 1963, he married Kathryn “Elaine” Runyan, in Hutchinson. They shared 58 years of marriage before her death on December 3, 2021.

John is survived by: his children, Karmen Davenport of Manhattan, Jason Davenport (Angie) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Abbie Davenport, Griffin Davenport; sisters, Virginia Elliott of Hutchinson, Nina Kuettel of Wichita; brothers-in-law, Steve Runyan (friend, Sharon Watson) of Caldwell, Royce Runyan (LeAnn) of Cape Fair, MO; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Elaine; grandson, John Grayson Davenport; brothers-in-law, Randy Elliott and Joseph Kuettel.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Gambino’s Pizza, 310 S. Main St. in South Hutchinson.

Private family inurnment will take place in Bean Memorial Cemetery in Little River.

Harvey Wallace Pankratz, age 89, of Newton, Kansas, passed away August 18, 2024 peacefully at home surrounded by family.

&nbsp;Harvey was born on October 6, 1934, in Hillsboro, Kansas, son of John D. and Lydia Pankratz. He attended Antioch grade school and Goessel high school.

&nbsp;He was united in marriage to Evelyn K. Stucky on the hot afternoon of July 20, 1963, at the Elbing Zion Mennonite Church. They enjoyed 56 beautiful years of marriage. Evelyn preceded him in death on November 21, 2019.

&nbsp;Harvey grew up on the family farm “Behind Goessel”. He served in the Army in Korea 1956-1958. After returning home he worked for Vogts Lumber of Goessel and Harris Lumber of McPherson and Halstead as a contractor while also helping on the family farm. Working as an independent contractor led to building houses and eventually opening Pankratz Interiors in downtown Halstead.

Later he specialized in Kitchen and Bath redesigning and remodeling. He was on the city council and church deacon at Halstead Mennonite church. Once he retired, he moved to Newton and rebuilt on last house. After the loss of Evelyn, he then went to work part time at Excel Industries working in the test lab driving test mowers. His hobbies that occupied his extra time were genealogy, gardening and taking trips to camp and fish.

He is survived by son Everett (Donna) Pankratz of Newton, Kansas, daughter Sheryl Pankratz of Elkhart Indiana. Two step-grandchildren Eric Henderson of Wichita, Kansas and Brad Henderson of Wichita, Kansas.

Harvey is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, brothers Walter and Ted (Eulala), Erwin (Lydia), Johnny (Beth), sisters Elda (Ross) Van Rossun, Lorena (George) Goossen, Sophie Pankratz Becker, Laura Pankratz.

Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Petersen Family Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas. The graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, Kansas.

Phyllis “Jeannie” Penner, 80, passed away at her home in Hutchinson, on August 17, 2024. She was born September 13, 1943, in Great Bend, the daughter of Irvin L. and Marcella C. Link Melcher. She graduated from Chase High School and then graduated from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She worked for Bartlett- Settle-Edgerly and Holy Cross as the school secretary before deciding to stay home to raise her family. Later She ran the office for the family business Penner Lawn Care.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, crocheting, and she loved sports, especially KU basketball! She was a caregiver to all with a kind ear and a warm heart to anyone who needed to talk, she loved interacting with all the clients who would personally drop payments off.

She married Jesse Ray Penner on August 18, 1967, in Hutchinson. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include her son, Jason Penner and a daughter, Jill Penner, both of Hutchinson; a sister, Mary J. Rowden, North Carolina; and granddaughter, Brooklyn (Daniel Stroede) Penner, McPherson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, John Douglas Melcher, Lawrence Ray Melcher, Margaret Melcher, and Janet Gail Branscom; and a granddaughter, Madyson Penner.

A rosary and visitation will be held at 5:30 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. at Inman Funeral Home on Thursday, August 22, 2024. Maxine Sue Newquist, 79, died August 17, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her family. &nbsp;She was born May 11, 1945, in Kansas City, MO, to Bennie and Maudie Catherine (Cavin) Cashman.

Maxine graduated from Frontenac High School in 1963, and attended school to be an airline stewardess. &nbsp;She was an Avon saleswoman for many years. &nbsp;Maxine attended every sprint car race she could, along with her husband, Harry, with David Gravel as her favorite driver. (They even had season tickets for this season!) In addition, she enjoyed camping, boating, and going to the casinos. &nbsp;Maxine absolutely LOVED Christmas and hosting her family at her house for the holiday, which she did for over 45 years. &nbsp;Above all, Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family, as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and sister.

On March 17, 1972, she married Harry August Newquist, in Cawker City at the Baptist Church.&nbsp;

Maxine is survived by: &nbsp;her husband of 52 years and 5 months, Harry Newquist; daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Simpson; son, Mike Newquist (Annetta), all of Hutchinson; brother, Richard Swartz of Salina; sister, Kathi Moore of Sedalia, MO; grandchildren, Makenzie Messer (Nick), Zach Simpson, Kinser Newquist, and Tanley Newquist; great-grandchildren, Memphis and Addison Messer; in-laws, Rayma Skinner, Carol Siefkes, Dave Newquist, and Tammie Wiles (Jim); and her great-grand-dog, Theo.&nbsp;

Larry Carl Jones, 84, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Pleasant View Home in Inman, KS.

Larry was born on December 13, 1939, in McPherson, KS, to Carl J. and Ina Grace (Ward) Jones. He was a proud graduate of McPherson High School and attended Kansas State University. Larry enjoyed a career as a chemical salesman before his retirement.

He served in the Kansas Army National Guard and was an active member of American Legion Post #24. His passion for the Kansas State Wildcats was well known among his friends and family.

Larry is survived by his brother, Michael Jones, and his wife, Connie, of Omaha, NE; a nephew, Michael Tate Jones and his wife, Heather, and their children, Michael Elliot, Liam Julian, Aiden Tate, Ewan Louis, Ella Grace, and Lilly Zora. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In accordance with Larry's wishes, he will be cremated, and his final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery.

Joyce Alene Crawford, born March 25, 1936, went to be with her Lord on Aug 17,2024. She was a loving wife to Robert Crawford for 67 years. She was a devoted mother to Kate Elaine Wolf, Bryan Kevin Crawford and Phyllis Anne Ray. Alene and Bob have 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Preceding Alene in death were her parents, Allie and Mossie Self; brothers Raymond Self, W.C. Self, and Kenneth Pendergrass.&nbsp;

Alene is survived by husband, Robert Crawford of Newton; son Bryan (Tracy) Crawford of Phoenix, AZ; daughters, Kate (Randy) Wolf of Burns, KS and Phyllis (Carol) Ray of Asheville, NC. Sisters, Marjean Holleman of Los Alamos, NM; Judy (Ed) Barkowsky of Synder, TX; and brother Joe (Bonnie) Self of Albuquerque, NM. As well as 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Alene was born in Wolfforth, Texas with humble beginnings and lived there until she went to college at Texas Tech University. She graduated in 3 years with a degree in Food and Nutrition. At the encouragement of her parents, all the children pursued a degree and graduated from Texas Tech.&nbsp;

Alene said the best thing about going to Tech was meeting her loving husband, Bob Crawford in chemistry class. They built a life together based on the devotion to each other and their faith. Bob’s job with the US Dept of Agricultural moved the family around to small Texas towns then to Syracuse, NY (1975) and Burlington, VT (1978). Bob &amp; Alene made their way back to the southwest in 1983 to Phoenix, AZ, where they eventually retired.

Alene pursued a master’s degree to become a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) at Texas Tech University. She worked various part-time jobs in school lunchroom service, a nursing home and hospital while the kids were at home. After her graduate work was completed at Syracuse University and she received her R.D., she worked as a hospital dietitian and loved it.

After retirement, Alene &amp; Bob spent a month in the New Mexico mountains each summer near Taos and Las Alamos to get out of the Phoenix heat, to fish Cimarron Canyon and visit with family. Alene &amp; Bob loved the return to the “Texan’s playground” of Northern New Mexico where they spent summers in the 60’s and 70’s camping, fishing and snow-skiing in the winters with their children. Alene and Bob continued to make trips back to the Taos, NM area for fishing and visiting family thru 2021. Their children joined them numerous times to relive their childhood memories and, of course, play dominoes and cards.&nbsp;

In 2004, Alene &amp; Bob left the deserts of AZ to move to Asheville, NC where their daughter Phyllis and family live. In 2009, Alene and Bob moved to Newton, KS, where daughter, Kate and Randy Wolf live nearby. They settled into small town life and enjoyed their new church family at Grace Community Church.&nbsp;

Alene was an avid reader and worked the daily newspaper crossword puzzles with Bob. She loved to play games, from Bridge, Canasta, Dominoes, &amp; board games. This is a great family tradition that has been passed down to all including their great grandchildren. Alene was a wonderful cook; she could cook for 2 up to any number of people in a group. Her children have especially fond memories of home-made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. She loved to cook, and Bob loved to eat her food.

Alene will be truly missed; it is impossible to express the loss by her family and those who knew her.

&nbsp;Visitation will be Tuesday, August 20, 2024, from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The funeral service will be the following day at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Grace Community Church, 1600 S. Anderson Rd in Newton.  </figure>Joyce Alene Crawford, born March 25, 1936, went to be with her Lord on Aug 17,2024. She was a loving wife to Robert Crawford for 67 years. She was a devoted mother to Kate Elaine Wolf, Bryan Kevin Crawford and Phyllis Anne Ray. Alene and Bob have 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.&nbsp;Preceding Alene in death were her parents, Allie and Mossie Self; brothers Raymond Self, W.C. Self, and Kenneth Pendergrass.&nbsp;Alene is survived by husband, Robert Crawford of Newton; son Bryan (Tracy) Crawford of Phoenix, AZ; daughters, Kate (Randy) Wolf of Burns, KS and Phyllis (Carol) Ray of Asheville, NC. Sisters, Marjean Holleman of Los Alamos, NM; Judy (Ed) Barkowsky of Synder, TX; and brother Joe (Bonnie) Self of Albuquerque, NM. As well as 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.&nbsp;Alene was born in Wolfforth, Texas with humble beginnings and lived there until she went to college at Texas Tech University. She graduated in 3 years with a degree in Food and Nutrition. At the encouragement of her parents, all the children pursued a degree and graduated from Texas Tech.&nbsp;Alene said the best thing about going to Tech was meeting her loving husband, Bob Crawford in chemistry class. They built a life together based on the devotion to each other and their faith. Bob’s job with the US Dept of Agricultural moved the family around to small Texas towns then to Syracuse, NY (1975) and Burlington, VT (1978). Joyce Alene Crawford |1936-2024|

John F. Murray died on August 16, 2024 in Hesston, Kansas. He was born August 1, 1932 in Niagara County, New York. He was the 12th of 14 children born to Elmer F. and Lydia (Hooley) Murray.

On June 6, 1958 he married Marilyn Stauffer in Milford, Nebraska, the daughter of Uriah and Edna (Troyer) Stauffer. They had two children Kathleen Karen and John Charles.

From 1954 to 1956, John was in voluntary service at a hospital in Puerto Rico. He taught high school government, economics and Spanish at Kouts High School, Kouts, IN for 30 years.

He was ordained on May 20, 1962 at the Hopewell Mennonite Church, Kouts, Indiana which he served for 30 years. Following his retirement from Hopewell he served as an Interim Pastor in seven churches and as an Overseer in three congregations.

In 2008 John and Marilyn moved to Hesston, Kansas to be near their children.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; son John (Krista) Murray of Hesston, Kansas; three grandchildren, John (Denay) Murray, St. Paul, MN, Joel (Katie Miller) Murray, Harrisonburg, VA; and Meghana Murray, St. Louis Park, MN; two great-grandsons, JD and Theodore Murray; sisters Shirley Miller of Harrisonburg, VA, Doris Klingelsmith of Sarasota, FL; son-in-law, Jon (Kris) Friesen of North Newton, Kansas; and two step grandchildren, Blake Friesen and Jaecy Friesen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Kathleen Foster Friesen, son-in-law John Foster, and 11 of his siblings.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Hesston Mennonite Church. The family will greet friends at the church before the service from 9 to 10 a.m. Private burial will be held at Eastlawn Cemetery, rural Hesston. John F. Murray |1932-2024|

James Jerome Pohlman Jr., shook off the bonds of this world late Friday evening, August 16, 2024 at 10:08 pm and passed peacefully from this life into the next.

While living, Jim wore many “hats”: husband, father, patriot, police officer, pastor, coach, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born March 14, 1942 to Jim Sr. and Irene Pohlman of Wichita, KS. He graduated in 1960 from Wichita High School North in Wichita before enlisting in the US Navy. Instilled with a strong sense of patriotism, he served aboard the Navy Destroyer USS Orleck (DD-886) as an engine-room boiler tender. He considered it a tremendous privilege and honor to serve his country in this capacity. Through the remainder of his life, he often declared that if someone were to cut him, he would bleed red, white, and blue.

It was during his time in the Navy that he met and married the love of his life, Sara Ann Philip, also of Wichita. Together they celebrated 55 years of marriage and brought into the world four boys: Jeff (1963), Tim (1966), Kip (1968) and Dusty (1978). After the Navy, Jim joined the police department and served as a K-9 officer in the mid-to-late 60’s amidst the race riots that broke out following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Having witnessed first-hand many of the horrible things of which man is capable, and through the unwavering positive influence of his wife, Jim turned to serving in a different capacity; full-time Christian ministry.

He graduated from Ozark Bible College in Joplin, Missouri in 1976. The “hat” of pastor was one that he wore longer than any other, serving the Lord for 50 years in many different locations across the country in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, and (most recently) Kansas where he ultimately spent his final 35 years at the Peabody Christian Church proudly serving his community and the surrounding areas from 1986 until his retirement from public ministry in 2021. His dedication to preaching, teaching, and living the truth made an indelible impact on those congregations and the people therein. His lasting influence continues and will continue through the lives he touched, long after his passing.

For recreation, Jim loved playing golf. His love for the game drove him to play several times a week (when he could), and eventually allowed him to coach the varsity golf team at the Peabody-Burns High School. Golf was his outlet, and it served as a metaphor for his Christian Walk. “It is possible to know all the rules of the game, how to stand, where to look, timing your swing, but sometimes you still make mistakes. As Christians, we know how we should live, but sometimes we mess up. Don’t quit. Keep striving, keep working toward getting better. The mistakes? That’s why we have Jesus.”

Another aspect of Jim’s life was his love for horses. He owned several over his lifetime, and loved to ride with family and friends. One unique opportunity that his ministry in Peabody provided, was the chance to appear, dressed in black astride his horse, as the “Circuit-riding Preacher.”

One part of his life that didn’t require a “hat,” was his love for the Lord. Being a believer wasn’t something he was, it was who he was. He ministered to anyone he encountered through love, compassion, and respect. His life reflected Jesus to the world around him. Even people who didn’t attend his church, often considered him their pastor; someone they could always come to in a time of need for advice, prayer, guidance, and counseling. He will be deeply missed by more than we can count.

Jim is preceded in death, and has no doubt been greeted in Heaven by his parents (Jim Sr. and Irene), his in-laws (Walter and Thelma Philip), his wife (Sara), one granddaughter (Felicia) and two great-grandsons (Tysin and Bentley).

He leaves behind a vast crowd of family and friends who love him dearly, including his brother John (with wife Sharon); sons Jeff, Tim (with wife Heidi), Kip (with wife Lana), and Dusty (with wife Jamie), grandchildren Jordan (with husband Marc), Travis (with wife Casey), Benjamin, Bailey (with husband Brett), Jakob, Cheyenne (with husband Tanner), Maggie, Jadelyn, Eva, Ryan, Lulu, and Caspian; and great-grandchildren Bradyn, Charlotte Paisley Ann, Rachel, Reed, Riggins, Sara, and Jett.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the Peabody Christian Church, 407 N. Sycamore, Peabody, Kansas.&nbsp; Graveside following service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, Ks.

Ruth ‘Elaine’ Griffin, 78, of Hutchinson, died August 15, 2024, at her home. She was born May 31, 1946, in Dodge City to Clarence and Vera (Bachman) Mead.&nbsp;

Elaine proudly attended Adela Hale Business College. She worked at Cessna in Hutchinson, AB Roofing, State Farm Insurance, and spent many years with Eagle Media Radio Station Hutchinson. Elaine enjoyed gardening, bird watching and sewing special projects for friends and family. She was an active member of the Sweet Adelines, the Sunflower Rambler Campers Club, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

On May 9, 1981, she married Norman ‘Gene’ Griffin, in Hutchinson. They shared 40 years of marriage before his death on February 28, 2022.&nbsp;

Elaine is survived by: daughters, Bonna Reusser, Hutchinson, Jenna Klein (Brad Peters), Kansas City, MO, Keri (Doug) Martens, Topeka; sons, Bob (Tara) Griffin, Hutchinson, Steve (Phyllis) Griffin, Bluffton, IN, Michael (Valerie) Griffin, South Hutchinson; brother, Tom (Georgia) Mead, Cimarron; sister-in-law, Barb Trimm, Hutchinson; 20 Grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew.&nbsp;
