Martin James “Marty” Killham Jr., 64, of Hutchinson, died May 19, 2021, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born on February 25, 1957, in Lewistown, Montana to Martin and Shirley (Stephens) Killham.

Marty graduated from Fergus County High School in Lewistown, Montana and attended Montana Technological School of Mining, where he played football and basketball.  He worked in construction in gold mines, as a hunting guide, and raising, cutting, and reigning quarter horses. Marty was a talented athlete and avid outdoorsman. He was passionate about hunting, golfing, water skiing, and many other activities. Marty remained active and determined even after being severely injured while guiding a hunting trip. He overcame many obstacles to continue doing the things he loved. Marty also had a special relationship with his grandfather, Noisey, and loved working on the ranch with him.

On November 24, 1990, he married Joy Spika, in Lewistown, Montana. They shared 30 years together. He also had a special attachment to his many fur babies, several of which also has special medical needs.

Marty is survived by: wife, Joy Killham, Hutchinson; mother, Shirley Myers, Las Vegas; mother-in-law, Virginia Spika, McMinnville, Oregon ; sister, Cindie Evans (Tom), Las Vegas; brother, Russ Killham (Lori), Lewistown, Montana; sister, Jamie Noel (Terry), sister-in-law, Chris Browne, McMinnville, Oregon; brother-in-law, Nick Spika (Janice), Tacoma, Washington; and many nieces and nephews, but especially Jamie Horacek and Jason Noel, who he had a special bond with. Marty had many lifelong friends and loved his neighborhood children.

He was preceded in death by: his father, Jim Killham; father-in-law, Frank Spika; grandparents,  C.C. “Noisy” and Myrtle Killham; grandparents, Russ and Effie Stephens; and brother, Steve Killham.

Cremation has taken place and there are no services at this time.

Larry Newton Smart, 68, of Medicine Lodge, KS, died Friday, May 21, 2021 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita, KS.

He was born on November 14, 1952 in Clovis, NM, the son of Weldon Smart and Johnnie M. (Carter) Smart.

Surviving are his wife, Bonita Hayes of Medicine Lodge, KS; one daughter, Desi (Joe) Young of Medicine Lodge, KS; one son, Joshua Smart of Salina, KS; Two grandchildren, Trenton Smart and Paislea Smart; one sister, Sharry Smart of Texas; one brother, Rodney Smart of Clovis, NM.

Carl L. Shore, 91, of Pratt, KS, died Friday, May 21, 2021 at Parkwood Village, Pratt, KS.

He was born on December 24, 1929 in St. John, KS, the son of Albert H. Shore and Eva (Smith) Shore. On January 9, 1953, he married Frances Louise (Gobin) Shore at Kansas City, MO. She survives.

Carl was employed at the Peoples Bank for 48 years. After retirement he and Louise enjoyed travelling in his RV and spending winters in south Texas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he joined in 1944. After the First Baptist Church closed, he joined the Iuka Methodist Church. He was a member of the Rotary Club for 25 years. Carl was a 3rd Class Petty Officer for the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Surviving in addition to his wife Louise Shore of Pratt, KS are three children, Denise Williams of Healy, KS, Kevin Shore of Pratt, KS and Carlton Shore of Lawrence, KS; Two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings, Myrtle Lynch, Vada Shoemaker, and Raymond Shore.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Rd., Pratt, KS 67124 with Louis Keeling officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Iuka Cemetery, Iuka, KS.

Alice Lucille Mertens Jacobs, 87, died May 21, 2021 at Newton.

She was born March 12, 1934, at Willowdale, Kansas the daughter of Leo and Lucille Miller Mertens.  A longtime resident of the Kingman and Murdock communities, she was a homemaker, and custodian and cook for the Murdock Grade School.

Alice was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church, the St. Louis Altar Society and the St. Louis Quilting Group, all of Waterloo.

On Oct. 18, 1955, she married Oscar Julius Jacobs at Willowdale; he died May 9, 2021.  Survivors include sons Dan, David (Linda) and Dean; daughters Donna (Tom) Ratzlaff, Debra Lorg, Dianne Taber, Denise (Greg) Baker, Darlene Jacobs and Doris Boroughs; brothers Leo, Leroy, Donald, Ronald “Gene”, and Marvin Mertens; sisters Pauline Jacobs, Helen Meyers, Karen Lubbers; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by brothers Edwin, Lawrence and John Mertens; sisters Dorothy Swartz and Rosella Henning; and granddaughter Nicole Marie Beat.

Leyla M. Field, 97, died May 20, 2021 at the Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie.

She was born Aug. 12, 1923, at Varner, Kansas the daughter of Irvin and Bertha Mae Young Albright.  A resident of Pretty Prairie most of her life, she was an organist and pianist.

Lelya was a member of the Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church, O.E.S., the Rebekas Lodge and the D.A.R.

In 1941, she married Curtis Field; he died in 1967.  In 1973 she married Tom Herrman; he died in 1978.  In 1980 she married Jack Austin; he died in 2000; she married Bob Field who died in 2021.

Survivors include two sons Curtis Eldon Field and his wife Georgia and Justin Randolph Field and wife Joyce; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by a son Tracy Vincent; and her brother Don Albright.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday. May 27, 2021 at the Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at the Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman.  Burial will be in the Lone Star Cemetery.

She was a waitress, dishwasher, punch press machine operator and a meat wrapper at Dillon’s. She enjoyed her family and crocheting.

Her loving family includes her sons and their wives, Randy and Judy Burch of Success, Missouri, Curtis and Judy Burch of Malvern, Arkansas, Carl and Debbie Burch of Newton, Kansas; daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Dwight King of Flippin, Arkansas and Donna and Harry Reid of Hutchinson, Kansas; sister and her husband, Judy and Alan Robar of Wautoma, Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

Tennie Williams of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 21, 2021, at McPherson Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was 101 years of age.

Tennie was born on April 10, 1920, in rural Douglas County, MO, to the late Rev. Caleb and Nancy (Huff) Maggard.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tennie, as a young girl, was saved and baptized under her father’s ministry at Mt. Olive Baptist Church at Ongo, MO.

She married Fred Williams in Springfield, MO, on September 11, 1939.&nbsp;&nbsp;This union was blessed with two daughters, DeAnn and Bette.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fred preceded her in death on April 11, 1977.

She was a member of Newlife Foursquare Church and Assembly of God, both of McPherson.&nbsp;&nbsp;She lived a Godly life and was a prayer warrior.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a prayer chairman for Women’s Aglow International. She was a Sunday school teacher for the very young and enjoyed putting the lessons together.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved The Word and read for hours in her room at Pleasant View Home, Inman.

Her home was always open for people to come and pray, to fellowship, and to break bread together.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved to cook and entertain.&nbsp;&nbsp;She cooked for the Central College biology students when&nbsp;&nbsp;they came to her country home.

She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;She taught them the Word of God and prayed with them during happy and sad times.&nbsp;&nbsp;She babysat them, loving every minute!&nbsp;&nbsp;She rode three-wheelers and dirt bikes, and even with some upsets, enjoyed it.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons-in-law, Beauferd Schmidt and Don Kennedy; sisters, Nora Stillings, Lois Fitzgerald, Janice Lawrence, Nina Mae Roberts, and Gladys Huff; brothers, Roy, Arthur, Lincoln, Hiram, Glen, Otto, and David Maggard; and a step grandchild, Susie Durbin.

Survivors include: two daughters, DeAnn Decker (Larry) of Galva, KS and Bette Leslie (Bob) of Nixa, MO; five grandsons, Mike Kennedy (JD), Chris Leslie, Tony Schmidt, Terry Schmidt (Cheryl), and Heath Schmidt (Leesa); step grandchildren, Rob Leslie, Michelle King (Sammie), Michael Decker (Saundra) and Matthew Decker (Sheryl); nine great-grandchildren, Kaley Cox (Kody), Caleb Schmidt and their mother, Karla Schmidt, Paige Burdick (Matthew), Madison Schmidt, Sylas Schmidt, Sam Schmidt, Hannah Leslie, Elijah Leslie, and Jennie Durbin; ten step great-grandchildren; seven step great-great-grandchildren; three siblings, Frances Montgomery, Madena Fae Hall, and Jim Maggard; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Louis A. “Louie” Dellett III, 63, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at his home.

Louie was born October 18, 1957, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Louis A. Dellett Jr. and Crystal J. (Alger) Dellett.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1975 graduate of Pawnee Heights High School, Rozel, Kansas, he was a farmer. &nbsp;

He loved spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp; He also enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, and football.&nbsp; He was a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan.

On January 14, 1989, he married Ruth Dreiling.&nbsp; They divorced.

Survivors include:&nbsp; his daughters, Kylee Winter (Dalton), Haven, Kansas, Tara Jennings, La Crosse, Kansas, and Erica Basgall (Lonnie), Hutchinson, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, Tyler, Haley, Natalie, Addison, Ashlie, Cade, Hendrix, Indi, Domonic, and Taelyn; one great grandchild, Landon; and two nieces, Tammy Chism, Great Bend, Kansas, and Tara Mangroo, Great Bend, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Betty Adair.

Memorial service will be Thursday, May 27, 2021, at 10:30 A.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Terry Warner&nbsp; officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Louis A. 'Louie' Dellett III

Richard (Rich) March, husband of Juanita March, went to be with his Lord August 12, 2020. He was surrounded by family at home. Rich was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Clyde and Anita March on October 7, 1940. Rich had an older sister, Gail, and a younger brother, Gary. The brothers enjoyed teasing their sister. He generated much laughter throughout his life, pulling pranks, making jokes, and telling stories. In high school Rich played numerous instruments including piano, violin, baritone and trombone. As a Boy Scout he enjoyed many adventures, such as swimming in Puget Sound.

Rich attended Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University) where he met Juanita Sheldon. After a root beer date and shared laughs, they fell in love, marrying on May 30, 1963. They lived in Kansas City where Rich apprenticed as a machinist in the Atchison Railyards and served in the Army Reserves at Ft. Wood. They had two daughters, Julia and Karen. Deciding they didn’t want to raise their family in the city, he took a job with the Santa Fe railroad in Newton. He was a locomotive mechanic in town, and a work equipment maintainer in the field, following the crews working on the line, keeping their equipment running. They lived in Greensburg, KS, briefly, where Rich worked for John Deere. While Rich had a deep knowledge of how to fix just about anything, he lived by the motto “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.”

Richard loved the great outdoors, particularly fishing, whitewater canoeing, and Jeeping in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. He shared the joys of camping and canoeing with his family. He had many stories to tell of his travels across the Western U.S. and Alaska, especially of wildlife he observed. Like his dad, Rich never knew a stranger. He would lend a helping hand whenever he was able, whether it was mowing the church lawn, volunteering with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, or helping a stranded motorist. To those he helped, he asked only that they return the favor by helping others in need.

After retiring from Santa Fe, Rich and Juanita enjoyed volunteer work serving at First United Methodist Church, and taking their fifth wheel camper places for the summer such as Lake John, Colorado where Rich volunteered as a camp host for many summers, and Buena Vista, Colorado, where they enjoyed beautiful views of Mt. Princeton and surrounding peaks.

Richard prioritized his family; gathering at the table, sharing meals and stories with his children and grandchildren brought much joy. He shared his appreciation of music with them, from classical to bluegrass, and was generous with his knowledge of fixing things. His daughter, Julia Crocetto, resides in Palisade, Colorado with her husband Tony. His daughter, Karen Brunk, resides in Moundridge with her husband, Mike. They have 2 daughters, Allison and Sarah.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Anita March, sister and brother-in-law Gail and Glen Rickerman, and brother Gary March. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Juanita, and their daughters, Julia Crocetto (Tony) of Palisade, CO; Karen Brunk (Mike) and their daughters, Allison and Sarah of Moundridge, KS; sister-in-law Linda March of Overland Park, KS; nieces Kristen Hane and Gretchen Hembree and their families of Leawood, KS; nephew Brett Rickerman and his family of Durango, CO; as well as cousins and their families.

Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. June 5, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Newton.

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Louise Watson Engelhardt (Margaret Louise Miller), of Brightwaters, NY, passed away on April 11, 2021.&nbsp; She was born in Estancia, New Mexico, on March 28, 1929.&nbsp; Raised in Estancia and Langdon, KS, Peggy received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Kansas, Master’s Degree from Hofstra University, and taught 7th and 8th grade English at Brentwood Junior High School in Brentwood, NY, until retirement.

Hutchinson– William (Bill) Perrone passed away peacefully May 20, 2021, surrounded by family at his home. He was born October 7, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, to Anthony and Ida Perrone. The only son in a family of four sisters, he was cherished from the beginning. He graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens, New York, and left NYC for McPherson College. Bill was sure a cab would be waiting on the other end.

Instead, he met and married Sylvia Gallardo, the love of his life. Bill and Sylvia raised their two sons, Brian and Billy, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Bill served 30 years on the Hutchinson Fire Department. After retirement, he loved interacting with the kids on his Nickerson bus. After dropping the kids off, he was known to get in a round of golf, racquetball or pickleball game.

Bill loved the New York Yankees, playing poker, and enjoying the simple life with family and friends. He told the best stories about life in New York and dropped everything to play with his grandkids. Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. He will be missed dearly by all.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; son, Brian Perrone and wife Emily (VinZant) of Burrton, Kansas; son, William (Billy) Anthony Perrone of Hutchinson, Kansas; grandchildren, Austin, Alec, Ella, Adam, and Eliza; sisters, Paula Callanan, Toni Jachens, Jessie Campbell, Mari Sheehan. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Roger Gene Fuller, was born on June 1, 1938, to Walter and Lillie Fuller at Franklin, NE., and passed away at the age of 82 on April 5, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS.

In his youth and teen years, he grew up helping his parents with the farming in Smith County. Roger was a 1957 graduate of Smith Center High School and joined the Army National Guard after graduation. He married Glennia Graham on September 6, 1959. To this union, five children were born, Susan Sellers, Phoenix, AZ., Sheila Heartfield, Salina, KS., Mickie Floyd, Turon, KS., Roger Fuller, Jr. (deceased) and Rick Fuller, Hutchinson, KS.

Roger worked many years for Bogaarts Bread Plant in Smith Center. In his later years he moved to Hutchinson where he was employed at Jackson Ice Cream until his retirement. His hobbies after retirement was putting puzzles together which he thoroughly enjoyed. No matter how tough times were, he always had a smile and loved to joke. He will be greatly missed as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Roger is survived by his wife, Glennia; three daughters, Susan, Sheila and Mickie; one son, Rick; two sisters, Darlene Peters, Hutchinson, KS., and Marylin Gibson, Wentzville, MO., 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and three grandchildren.

James (Jim) Hood passed away peacefully on June 24th, 2020 at the grand old age of 98 years and 1 month.  Jim, or Mr. Hood to many, led a full and colorful life and his legacy impacted thousands of former students and visitors to his museum. 

Jim was born to Theodore and Mabel Hood on May 23rd, 1922 in Kiowa, KS.  He had one brother, Cecil, that was seven years older than him.  Jim adored Cecil, but he was lost in WWII during the invasion of Normandy.  Jim married Joyce Elaine Hayes in 1956 and they immediately moved to St. John, KS.  They lived there until she passed in 2012 and together had four children.  Jon (Rosemary), Cyndy Unruh (Duane), and Joel (Tracy) survive while son Wendell passed away during infancy.  Jim is also survived by four grandchildren (Landon, Ce Chel, Jacob, and Sarah) and two great-grandchildren (Remington and Rhett).

Jim’s life story is remarkable.  He was part of the greatest generation that lived through the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II serving his country as a patriot onboard a B24.  The war was a defining chapter in Jim’s life as he was a hero that flew harrowing missions over Nazi Germany.  On his last mission, his plane was so damaged that it crashed into the North Sea.  Upon impact, he was thrown through the front windshield and into the ocean, only to survive by clinging to wreckage until Air Sea Rescue could fish him out of the frigid waters.

For almost forty years Jim taught high school science and in retirement he opened the St. John Science Museum in 1987.  In 1968 Mr. Hood won the Kansas Teacher of the Year Award and was inducted into the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame in 1989. Generations of students have their favorite “Mr. Hood” stories that only they can truly appreciate.  The Science Museum became a second career that was his passion for almost thirty years, as it provided a place for new learning and a space for former students to meet with their favorite “mad scientist.”  Throughout most of Jim’s life he was active in both the First Baptist and Methodist churches of St. John.  For many years he sang bass in the church choir and was frequently called upon to lead hymns with the passion only he possessed.  

A few years after Jim’s wife passed, he moved to Kenwood Plaza to begin the final chapter of his journey.  At Kenwood he felt safe, loved, and cared for.  The Kenwood staff adored his fun loving personality and enjoyed his impromptu science demonstrations.

The family of James Hood invites you to a community memorial in his honor on Saturday, June 5th at 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church (807 E. 1st) in St. John, KS. The Science Museum became a second career that was his passion for almost thirty years, as it provided a place for new learning and a space for former students to meet with their favorite “mad scientist.” Throughout most of Jim’s life he was active in both the First Baptist and Methodist churches of St. John. For many years he sang bass in the church choir and was frequently called upon to lead hymns with the passion only he possessed. A few years after Jim’s wife passed, he moved to Kenwood Plaza to begin the final chapter of his journey. At Kenwood he felt safe, loved, and cared for. The Kenwood staff adored his fun loving personality and enjoyed his impromptu science demonstrations.The family of James Hood invites you to a community memorial in his honor on Saturday, June 5th at 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church (807 E. 1st) in St. John, KS. James (Jim) Hood |1922-2020|

Jack Eldon Thompson, age 93, passed away on May 19, 2021 at his home in Macksville, KS. 

He was born on January 28, 1928 in Sutherland, NE., the son of Orville Dean and Fraukalena (Kruger) Thompson. Jack was a resident of Flats, NE, then later ran a ranch in Garden County, NE for 25 years. On June 13, 1954, he married Pauline June Ring. His final days were spent with his daughter in Macksville, KS. 

Jack was a man of all trades. He was a member of the Arthur Baptist Church, a welder, mechanic, and liked flying his airplane and moving dirt with his caterpillar. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Deborah (Gregg) Maseberg, Macksville, KS, Ilene (Marvin) Withers, Loveland, CO; brother, Orville Dean Thompson, Sutherland, NE; 5 Grandchildren; 1 Great Grandchild. Jack is proceeded in death by both of his parents; brother Donald Thompson; sister Evelyn Shimmin. 

Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at the Arthur Baptist Church, Arthur, NE with Pastor Sandi John, and Pastor Blake Wilkes presiding. Burial will follow at the Arthur Cemetery.

Helen Margaret (Bishop) Durr passed away in Salina, KS, on May 18, 2021,
 at the age of 95.&nbsp; Helen was born November 14, 1925 at Beaver, KS.&nbsp; She
 was the third of four children born to George Earl Bishop and Anna 
(Schremmer) Bishop. Helen grew up in Beaver, Kansas and 
graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic school there.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her father accepted
 a job in Holyrood, KS and the family relocated there in 1941.&nbsp; In 
Holyrood she met her future husband Dale Dane Durr.&nbsp; They were married 
August 19, 1947 in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holyrood, KS.&nbsp; In 
March 1948 they moved to the Durr farm home located 2 miles south, 3 
miles east and ¾ mile south of Smith Center, KS in Crystal Plains 
Township, Smith County, KS.&nbsp; Their son Dan Dale Durr was born in 1950 
and son Douglas Don Durr was born in 1954.&nbsp; The boys attended rural 
Pleasant Dale School until their 3rd (Douglas) and 7th (Dan) grades.&nbsp; In
 1962 the family moved their rural home to 310 Park Street, Smith 
Center, KS.&nbsp; Helen worked part time at Stevenson’s Men’s Clothing Store 
and for 22 years at Chandler’s and Weltmer Livestock Auction office. 
 After 48 years together, Dale, Helen’s love, friend and life partner, 
passed away on March 17, 1996.&nbsp; Helen and Dale loved the time spent with
 friends playing cards, dancing and visiting.&nbsp; After Dale’s death Helen 
greatly missed the social times with other couples.&nbsp; Helen loved people 
and she was involved in many social groups.&nbsp; She was a charter member of
 St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.&nbsp; Some of her social clubs
 included Golden Oldies, Silver Needle, Garden Lore Club (for 57 years 
in 2019), card clubs of bridge, pitch and pinochle.&nbsp; She enjoyed her 
hobbies of crocheting and jigsaw puzzles.&nbsp; Helen organized the Red Hat 
chapter in Smith Center in June 2004. In 2009, Helen moved 
from her home at 310 Park Street to the new Smith Estates apartments in 
Smith Center.&nbsp; She was very happy there and made many new friends.&nbsp; 
Helen was always so grateful to her many young friends who helped her to
 enjoy the many activities during her “golden years.” She was
 preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Lawrence and Julius Bishop,
 sister Ethel Driscoll and grandson David Dane Durr.&nbsp; A seven carnation 
bouquet has been placed on her casket in colors of 3 red, 3 white and 1 
blue in memory of the deceased members of her immediate family. 
 Helen is survived by her two sons and two special daughters-in-law&nbsp; ̶&nbsp;
 Dan Dale Durr and Laurlee “Laurie” (Braden) Durr of Tumwater, WA and 
Douglas Don Durr and Marcia “Jo” (Gilg) Durr of Salina, KS.&nbsp; Her 
surviving grandchildren are: Amy (Devin) Harder, Faskatoon, WA; Dustin 
(Susan) Durr, Salina, KS; Jaci Durr, McPherson, KS.&nbsp; Her surviving great
 grandchildren are Dylan Potter, WA; Baleigh Harder, Olympia, WA;

Helen M. Durr

Wendy Ann Cox, 52, Topeka, Kansas, lost a courageous four-year battle with ovarian cancer on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka.

Wendy was born September 30, 1968, in Hutchinson, Kansas, daughter of Sally Kern, who died in 2016, and Dan and Sharon Deming of Hutchinson. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University where she achieved her medical degree as a certified physician assistant, specializing in heart surgery.

Wendy was uniquely qualified to assist with heart operations and patient follow up, spending her final years of patient care at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus, Topeka. She had earlier been a physician assistant in the Stormont Vail Hospital Emergency Room, Topeka, the Hutchinson Clinic, and other Kansas practices. Wendy was especially devoted to her patients and until several weeks before her death was involved in lengthy operating room surgery.

Wendy centered much of her love and attention to her son, Andrew Cox, who died February 5, 2021, in Topeka. She was especially appreciative to her fellow doctors and health care professionals who gave her opportunities to help people in special and memorable way that will never be forgotten.

Other survivors include her sister, Shannon Guild (Doug), Rogers, AR, who devoted special care and comfort by making numerous trips to Topeka. Wendy's family also included several devoted friends and caregivers, Mary Roy, Topeka, Angie Gamber, Topeka, and Kait Hupe, Wamego, who assisted her in home and hospice care. She also acknowledges the care given by those at Midland Care Hospice.

Also giving much appreciated support were Pam and Mike Clutter, Topeka, Paul Cox, Diana Leuschner and the Cox Family in Washington State. Numerous nieces, nephews and other family members in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas also mourn Wendy's loss along with her faithful miniature bulldog, Stella.

Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, where celebration of Wendy's life will be at 5 p.m. Wendy requested burial in Hutchinson alongside her grandmother, June Deming, who also was overjoyed by her presence and accomplishments.

Dr. Walden R. Peterson, 89, of Lindsborg, died at the Lindsborg Community Hospital on February 15, 2021. He practiced general dentistry in Lindsborg for 46 ½ years.

Dr. Peterson was born on the family farm near Dresden, Kansas on November 30, 1931, the son of Raynold G. and Elsa A. (Holmdahl) Peterson. The family moved to Marquette when Walden was 7 years old. He is a graduate of Marquette High School, North Park Junior College, Chicago, Bethany College class of 1954, and UMKC School of Dentistry, Kansas City in 1958.

He was a faithful member of the Lindsborg Evangelical Covenant Church serving in many capacities. He was a thoughtful, quiet-spoken man of deep faith.

Dr. Peterson was part of the USD#400 School Board for 16 years, serving as president for 6 years.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth A. (Johnson); sons, Mark Walden Peterson (Joyce), Lindsborg, KS and Ralph Raynold Peterson (Susan), Billings, MT; daughter-in- law, Dr. Michelle Klem, Denver, CO; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, plus numerous other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Dale Eldon Peterson, brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Lois Peterson, step-father, Elston Thelander, and step-brother, Klinton Thelander.

Dr. Walden R. Peterson |1931-2021|

Nadine Gay (Decker) Spence, 66, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2020, in Henderson, NV.

Nadine was born, June 2, 1954, in Newton, KS, the daughter of Robert E. and Susie L. (Rudiger) Decker. She attended Canton Public Schools where she was a cheerleader and May Day Queen, and she graduated in 1972 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Hutchinson Junior College, Pittsburg State University, and graduated from McPherson College with a degree in accounting.

Nadine met Steve Spence at Hutchinson Junior College. They were married on June 15, 1974, at the First Baptist Church in McPherson where they remain members. They were blessed with two daughters, April and Abbigail. Nadine loved her daughters and supported them through involvement in all their activities. She took on leadership roles as Sunday School teacher and president of the PTA, Campfire Girls, and Arts Council Choir.

Nadine built her career as an accountant at Kansas Jack and continued as an Accounting Manager at NCRA, retiring in 2015. She was also a leader in the community as she was involved with Leadership McPherson through the Chamber of Commerce, All Schools Day Chairman, and countless other organizations.

Nadine was a loving, caring individual who enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She could light up a room with her smile and laughter. She was always positive and put others before herself. She brought joyful life to every holiday and family reunion, which included any number of her beloved 45 cousins. Friendship was very important to her. She looked forward to lunches, shopping trips, and socializing with all her friends. In retirement, Nadine and Steve continued traveling, camping, and spending time with their family, including their precious granddaughter, Olivia. Nadine thrived in her role as a grandmother, and she and Steve took every opportunity to create memories together as Grandma and Grandpa.

Survivors include: her husband, Steve Spence; daughter, April Spence of Chicago IL; daughter, Abbigail (John) Peddieson of Henderson, NV; granddaughter, Olivia Peddieson (age 4); brother, Dwight (Jeanne) Decker of Canton, KS; and one uncle and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Julie and Julie’s husband Charlie Hoyer of Canton, KS.

Nadine was loved by everyone who met her and will be missed greatly.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 4, at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the McPherson American Legion following the burial.

Nadine loved her daughters and supported them through involvement in all their activities. She took on leadership roles as Sunday School teacher and president of the PTA, Campfire Girls, and Arts Council Choir.Nadine built her career as an accountant at Kansas Jack and continued as an Accounting Manager at NCRA, retiring in 2015. She was also a leader in the community as she was involved with Leadership McPherson through the Chamber of Commerce, All Schools Day Chairman, and countless other organizations.Nadine was a loving, caring individual who enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She could light up a room with her smile and laughter. She was always positive and put others before herself. She brought joyful life to every holiday and family reunion, which included any number of her beloved 45 cousins. Friendship was very important to her. She looked forward to lunches, shopping trips, and socializing with all her friends. In retirement, Nadine and Steve continued traveling, camping, and spending time with their family, including their precious granddaughter, Olivia. Nadine thrived in her role as a grandmother, and she and Steve took every opportunity to create memories together as Grandma and Grandpa.Survivors include: her husband, Steve Spence; daughter, April Spence of Chicago IL; daughter, Abbigail (John) Peddieson of Henderson, NV; granddaughter, Olivia Peddieson (age 4); brother, Dwight (Jeanne) Decker of Canton, KS; and one uncle and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Rick Cornwell of St. John passed away on May 17, 2021, surrounded by his children.

Born on June 15, 1949 to Jack and June Cornwell, Rick grew up on his family farm in St. John, Kansas.

After graduating from St. John High School, he attended Kansas State University where he was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity. Rick pursued his passion for cattle and was active on Kansas State University’s meat and livestock judging teams. He regularly placed at national shows and won high individual at the American Royal in meats judging. Rick also served in the Kansas Air National Guard as a military policeman. He graduated with a degree in animal science before returning home to Cornwell Farms.

In 1982, Rick married his love, Gayle. They made a home in the country where they raised three children, Jeff, Casey, and Bethany. Their happiest times were spent driving the pastures together. Rick loved bragging about his children to anyone who would listen, and to those who wouldn’t.

Rick had a natural talent for raising cattle. He judged many stock shows over the course of his life and served on the Kansas Angus Association Board. He loved every aspect of raising cattle with his brother Joe and nephew Ty and contributing seedstock to the cattle industry. He was extremely passionate but humble about his work.

Rick’s love for his cattle was second only to the love for his family. Rick lived his life according to the Code of the West, a collection of principles displayed by the American Cowboy including tenets such as taking pride in your work, always finishing what you start, and doing what has to be done.

Rick is survived by his children Jeff (Sarah) Cornwell, Casey (Charley) Forsyth, and Bethany (Scott) Krehbiel, eight grandchildren, his brother Joe Cornwell and family, and sister Martha Riddell and family. Being apart for only a few months, Rick has now joined his wife Gayle. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother.

Friends are invited for visitation on Friday, May 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Minnis Chapel in St. John, Kansas. Services will be held Saturday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. John First United Methodist Church.

Lyle William Neville, 83, peacefully passed away at his home in Chandler, Arizona, on August 5, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 20, 1937, on the Neville homestead farm, in Benkleman Township, Cheyenne County, 18 miles southwest of St. Francis, Kansas; one of eight children born at this farm site to Monta Alice (Thompson) and George Neville.  Lyle was the last surviving member of his prairie farming family.

While his family mourns the passing of their patriarch, his friends, former students and so many others mourn the loss of an irreplaceable man. Lyle was very special; a kind, humble and gracious person, with a natural ability to make everything better.  Lyle was a stranger to no one, a trusted friend to everyone and was loved by all who knew him. His generosity of his time, attention and sincere interest in others was immense.

After eight years of elementary school at rural school district #9 (referred to as “Neville School”, where his mother taught school, and named in honor of his fraternal grandfather, who had donated a plot from his homestead ¼ section of land), Lyle graduated from Cheyenne Community High School in St. Francis, in 1955.  He was President and Salutatorian of his Senior Class, member of the National Honor Society, 1st Team center of the All Northwest Kansas Football team, Co-Captain of wrestling and football and Homecoming King.  He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education, Deans Honor List.  In pursuit of his continuing education over the next 40 years, Lyle also attended the University of Kansas, Wichita State University, Kansas State University (Hays), and Western State College (Gunnison, CO).

On July 23, 1961, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Lou Coons, in Goodland, Kansas. Last month they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.  A testament to Lyle and Bonnie’s lifelong love for each other was their amazing relationship formed and maintained with family and so many wonderful friends.

Lyle was a championship high school and college wrestler.  As a high school wrestler at St. Francis, Lyle was special; he was one of Kansas’ first 3-time Kansas State Wrestling Champions (1953, 1954 &amp; 1955), he placed 3rd in State his freshman year (1952).  Lyle and his high school teammates won four consecutive Kansas State Team Championships, under two legendary coaches (a total of six consecutive years, 1951 through 1956).  In addition to wrestling, Lyle was a 3-year football letterman and four-year letterman in track, where he ran the middle distances, relays and threw the javelin.  

At the University of Colorado, he continued his storied wrestling career as a collegiate three-year letterman (freshmen were not eligible to participate at the varsity level).  He was Big-7 Conference Champion at 137 lbs. in 1957, and took 4th Place in Big-8 tournament in 1959.  While team leader at CU, Lyle competed in the NCAA Championship Tournament in 1957 and 1959.  His amateur freestyle career was highlighted as Champion of AAU Rocky Mountain Tournament in 1956 and Runner-Up in 1958.  He was Champion at the 1956 U.S. Olympic, Rocky Mountain District Tournament in Sterling, Colorado, where he was awarded tournament trophy for quickest pin in 13 seconds.  He went on that summer to compete in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman in the 1956 U.S. Olympic National Finals in Los Angeles, California.

For 35 years, Lyle excelled in his high school coaching and teaching career.  He was beloved and honored by thousands of former athletes and students.  He always led by example and was such a great mentor to all.  Out of college in 1959, Lyle was hired as a P.E. teacher, varsity wrestling coach and assistant coach in football and track in Sterling, Colorado.  The following year he began a 10-year reign (1960 – 1970), as the head wrestling coach at Colby High School in Colby, the center hotbed of northwest Kansas wrestling.  While at Colby, Lyle coached 12 Kansas State Champs and 20 other wrestlers to 2nd through 4th Place finishes.  In addition to his primary duties as a P.E. and social studies teacher, he also assisted coaching in football and track.

In 1970, Lyle moved his young family to Hutchinson, Kansas, to accept the varsity wrestling coaching position at Hutchinson High School.  While at the helm, he led his championship team for 24 seasons (1970-1994). Under his leadership, HHS won two Kansas Wrestling team titles in 1973 (5A) and 1981 (6A).  His teams had 21 years in Top-10 Kansas State finishes in 34 seasons.  In addition to the two team titles at HHS, his teams (Hutchinson and Colby combined) accomplished 2nd Place (three times – 1963, 1980 &amp; 1982), 3rd Place (four times – 1966, 1974, 1979, 1983), 4th or 5th Place (four times), 6th – 10th  Place (eight times).   During his long tenure of employment with Hutchinson Public Schools (U.S.D. 308), Lyle also assisted in coaching football and track, and was in charge of the District’s Driver Education program for decades.  The family often heard stories and memories of the young people of Hutchinson, learning how to drive in this well-attended summer program from the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

Lyle was inducted into the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995 and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award), in 2004.  Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association honored him as “Coach of the Year” in three different decades (1978, 1981 and 1993).  He was elected two times as President of Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, two times, Secretary-Treasurer, and was a charter member. 

In his entire coaching career, he led individual wrestlers to State Titles (25 times), including his oldest son, Brad, in 1980 and his nephew, Jim Coons, in 1981, 1982 and 1983.  He coached athletes in the State Tournament to 2nd Place (20 times), 3rd Place (25 times) and 4th Place (18 times) including his son, Lane, in 1982.  He also coached his son, Morgan, and his daughter, Monee, was a varsity wrestling cheerleader.  His wife, Bonnie, was the biggest supporter of all.  Wrestling was always a family affair for the Nevilles.

Lyle was also a huge force in establishing the Kansas Youth Wrestling.  In 1971, Bill Carroll, the Executive Director of the Hutchinson YMCA, approached him to start a kids’ program.  The first season, 15 boys joined the Hutchinson Youth team and they participated in three tournaments--Andale, Colwich, and Douglass.  The team grew immensely over the next few years as the entire youth wrestling movement took off in Kansas.  By the third season, the Hutchinson Youth Wrestling Team grew to 70 boys.  Lyle started the first Hutchinson Youth Wrestling Tournament.  The first tournament was held in 1975, with about 300 participants. The next year, the tournament was moved from HHS to the Hutchinson Sports Arena and drew nearly 600 participants as more and more communities had started youth wrestling programs. The Hutchinson YMCA Invitational Tournament continued to grow in size and many years it exceeded 1,000 youth wrestlers in a one-day tournament.  Lyle was involved in coaching the YMCA program until 1981. Many outstanding volunteers helped and assisted him in youth coaching and with his tournament efforts over the years, including many of his varsity wrestlers and assistant coaches: Gary Travis, Dan Powers, Mike Juby, Mark and David Sandoval, Jim Coons, Tom Coons, Brad Neville, Mike Vierya, Bob Mauck, Mike Baker, Mike Garcia, and many others, maintaining sound coaching staff and fundamentals working with the youth of Hutchinson.   It was this spark of exposure to the sport of wrestling that Lyle created which captivated many young boys over the years, inspiring them to practice and compete in an individual sport for the first time, and to come to know and understand the highs and lows of individual athletic competition.  For most, this simple rigor and self-awareness helped to develop them into the men that they would become. 

Lyle retired from coaching in 1994.  After retirement, Lyle worked for 10 years (2005-2015), cutting fairways and greeting patrons at Cottonwood Hills Golf Course in Reno County, Kansas.  He was a huge part of the award-winning course and was extremely proud and fond of his time spent out of doors on this uniquely beautiful golf project nestled in one the best natural settings in central Kansas.

Lyle’s greatest of all accomplishments were his family, whom he and Bonnie nurtured, provided for, educated and supported in every way, and the lifelong personal relationships he formed throughout his life.  His time at Cottonwood Hills was also one of his proudest accomplishments – in many respects, it may have been his favorite dream come true.

Lyle is survived by:  his wife, Bonnie of Chandler, AZ; his three sons, Brad (Dena) of Hutchinson, KS, Lane (Kristin) of Scottsdale, AZ, Morgan (Sandra) of Chandler, AZ; and daughter, Monee of Chandler, AZ; nine grandchildren (each of whom developed and shared a unique bond with their ‘grandad’ or ‘papa’), Cole, Anna, Dalton, Elle, Ayla, Mia, Skye, Eden and Isaac; brother-in-law, Tom Coons (Kathy) of Chandler, AZ; and eight nephews and nine nieces.  He will always be missed and never forgotten.  The world lost a great man.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in memory of Lyle on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the Elliott Mortuary Chapel.

The world lost a great man.A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in memory of Lyle on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the Elliott Mortuary Chapel.The Lyle W. Neville Memorial Fund has been established to be utilized solely for the advancement and opportunity of youths of character, with athletic and academic achievements, to be recognized and receive scholarship assistance for their pursuit of post-secondary education. James ‘Jim’ Allen Strong, 77, passed away November 26, 2020, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; He was born October 1, 1943, in Hutchinson.

Jim was the maintenance superintendent for 39 years at Far-Mar-Co and Farmland Industries elevator, formerly Gano-Horace Grain, Inc.&nbsp; He could work on and repair anything, from building his own home and garage, to painting vehicles and building trailers.&nbsp; If you needed something repaired, worked on, or built from scratch, he was a ‘Jim-of-all-trades’.&nbsp; He was a great outdoorsman who was always on the hunt for the next fish, bird, or animal.

On October 20, 1962, he married Barbara Dove, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 58 years of marriage.

Jim is survived by:&nbsp; wife, Barbara Strong of Hutchinson; children, James (Mary) Strong of Hutchinson, Kelley (Gordon) Miller of Burrton, April Strong of Hutchinson, and Christine Strong (fiancé, Nicholas Hutchison) of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, George Moore, Glenn Strong, and Richard Strong.

Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Pratt, or The Salvation Army, Hutchinson, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Alden ‘Andy’ Albert Anderson, 92, passed away February 2, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; He was born October 19, 1928, in Clermont, IA, to Albert and Alma (Ostle) Anderson.

 </figure>Alden ‘Andy’ Albert Anderson, 92, passed away February 2, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; He was born October 19, 1928, in Clermont, IA, to Albert and Alma (Ostle) Anderson.Andy was a 1946 graduate of Clermont High School, Clermont, IA.&nbsp; He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953.&nbsp; Andy was employed by Big Chief Buildings for over 30 years, and Farmland Industries as the Human Resources Manager, retiring in 1982.&nbsp; He enjoyed working and always had a side job.&nbsp; Andy was the owner/operator of Triple A Trash Service that was eventually sold to Stutzman Refuse Disposal.&nbsp; He drove an activity bus for Unified School District 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson from 1983 to 1996.&nbsp; He always said that there was nothing better than getting paid to watch his grandchildren at their activities.&nbsp; Andy also worked for Ramsey Oil for several years.&nbsp;He enjoyed playing card games, dominoes, camping, and boating.&nbsp; Andy and his wife loved to travel.&nbsp; They would spend their winters at the Fountain of Youth Spa in California.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of the Nickerson United Methodist Church, Nickerson, KS.&nbsp;On August 2, 1953, he married Ethel Agnes Pickle, in Jamestown, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 67 years of marriage.Andy is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Aggie Anderson of Nickerson, KS; children, Gary (Jo Anne) Anderson of Ocean Shores, WA, Larry Anderson of Nickerson, KS, Janice (Troy) Coon of Hutchinson, KS, Connie (Robert) Yost of Pottsboro, TX, and Brenda (Steven) Guisinger of Moore, OK; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents; three sisters; and two brothers.Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2021, at Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson.&nbsp; Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2021, through Friday, June 4, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary.In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Nickerson United Methodist Church or Kansas Honor Flight, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N.
